If I had to take another lab she would not be the first person I signed up with. She was fine with helping me trying to think the problem through for the answer but she will not tell you what is right and wrong. If you are looking for something with no responibility and just fun then find another instructor. Over all she is not as bad as is said
She was not horrible, but not easy. You have to be on top of things & thoroughly understand each lab before you attend. She thoroughly grades your pre/post-lab assignments & data sheets (ex. 3.82/4pts). She tells you in the 1st class that she is there to answer occasional questions, but overall you should approach chem. "hands on" & figure it out.
she is great, you need to be prepared, but overall the best layout for a lab, organized and neat
I had her last semester and recieved a B+, which I thought was fair. You need to be prepared and make sure to show up to class on time.
Awesome teacher! Being on time and prepared is a given for any class. We are adults! Prior to the 1st day you get an email with what you need for class. So your prepared! She doesn't answer some ?'s so you can find out for yourself. I think that's great! It is after all our experiment. Not hers! Also Google is awesome for the pre/post labs. LOL!
The lab is easy, however she grades really picky on the labs. I dont think anyone in my class got better than a B.
I liked her lab, thought she was helpful and polite. She definately wants you to think on your own, but is willing to give examples in order to help. Be prepared for labs and you will be fine.
Go to class, do the post and pre labs and you will get a decent grade. Not hard, just semi-time consuming. She is nice and somewhat helpful.
Really harsh on grading labs.
She was never willing to help me with any questions I had, and she would find ways to take points off of my reports (using a pencil instead of pen on any aspect of the assignments including math will dock you points). And would mark questions wrong when they were argued right. I would not recommend you taking this lab from her.
she is good, perhaps average. but i only hate getting mean teachers and she isnt strict or mean
need to be prepared
great teach for an introductory class, highly recommend her
Math is difficult subject, he makes is seem easy.
Need to be prepared, difficult class.
Memorize, memorize, memorize.
make sure to hand in your paperwork
great information, good help
My first chemistry lab class, I am happy I did not blow up.
best intro class ever..............
best math class ever
Biochem for nursing, you must pass this class to get into the nursing program. This is the best teacher to take it from.
class needed for my degree
Beginning chemistry class for nursing....
Required class for nursing, take it from this teacher.
Must take this class if you want to go on to Engineering degree.
Class required for major, best teacher to take it from
Chemistry for nursing students, expect to be reading.
math papers, really????
Better than high school algebra.
Best class for general science class.
This is the chemistry lab for Bioorganic Chemistry, need this class for nursing. There is a lot of set up for this lab, I recommend you take it as soon as possible.
Gen Chem I Lab, class is for science majors. Make sure your math credits are up to the requirements.
Lab for General Chemistry first semester, this is the lab class you want.
Extremely easy to follow. I think this is only an intro to chemistry class. I will take a class from her again.
Make sure your math level is up to at least starting Calculus, there are a lot of calculations in this class. Some work requires a typed report.
expect a lot of math, be ready....
Beginning chemistry, best class to be in. I never have had chemistry, not even in high school. I still passed the class.
Introduction to chemistry, basic theory, good class to start with.
General chemistry lab, more work than the lecture class.
Bio-organic chemistry, long labs and lots of preparation.
Instructor gives you a lot of help with the set up of the labs. The labs run very smoothly and you get good results. Best lab I have ever had.
Great discussions on correct way to set up math problems in the homework.
The grade comes from weekly assignments that you do and turn in. I think it is an easy class if your remember to show up and turn in your homework. The homework will be graded, so remember to check your calculations.
Bring your calculator and know how to use it.
The biggest problem I had in the class was making sure I had my homework done and ready to turn in each week.
Difficult class, make sure you have taken the mat pre req lots of calculations, lots of homework.
great class
lots of math and calculations, lots of homework, difficult class
lots of experiments, lots of data
important to be in class and turn in paperwork.
She is so chill, clear, and easy to follow. You will always know exactly what to do. Show up and do your assignments. Each lab has a pre lab, lab, and post lab.
I do not understand the amazing reviews. Every time I asked her a question she looked at me like I had just offended her, it made me very uncomfortable. The class itself is pretty simple, do the pre and post labs and you pass. I wouldn't take her again.
I think Leslie is nice enough, as long as you don't need questions answered. This lab wasn't particularly hard, but every time I had a question, she basically ignored me and wouldn't even look me in the eye. No quizzes, just homework, lab, pre-lab and post lab, which is nice. Easy A, just don't expect a teacher who cares very much.
She is definitely a tough grader!! Make sure you read every question carefully and answer it to its fullest. Ask her questions in class to make sure you are getting all of the information she wants on the Lab Homework.
lots of paperwork to turn in , none of my other classes require this, a different experience
She was fine with helping me trying to think the problem through for the answer but she will not tell you what is right and wrong. You need to think for yourself, so get a group of friends to work with or you will have problems.
math just is not an easy subject.....
Well structured labs as far as chemistry goes, very rarely (if ever) did anything not go as planned. However, the standards for lab write-ups were unclear and therefore even my most thorough reports were often met with tough grading.
hard class
had to take class for nursing, was important to be on time and be prepared
Course material is the same for every lab so it boils down to teacher/student compatability. Mary is a soft-spoken, kind teacher that only wants you to do well. If you show up to lab and make an effort plus turn in your prelab, lab and postlab (departmental requirements) you'll do great. She teaches more than one lab so if you miss you can make up
must attend class if you want to pass, be there....
This class is very different, not much math. I would say just do the paperwork and make sure you are on time for class and you will get better than a B. Good luck....
Worst teacher ever. When I ask for help she ignores me and doesn't want to answer anything I have to ask. I felt so disrespected. Hard grader spent more time on homework for her lab then I did the actual lecture. Labs shouldn't ever be this tough. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She will assign you into groups of 3 or 4. She likes answers to be a bit more specific so watch out for that. Experiments aren't hard but don't expect her to come running over with a smile on her face if you ask for help or ask her about a certain question. She also is kind of vague when helping with assignment questions.
I took chem 1125 because it is required for nursing and physical therapists....I do not know which field I will be going into at this points....I am glad Leslie was my teacher.
Lots of homework for a 1 credit course, if you ask this professor a question about the homework/calculations she'll just stare at you and walk away. Questions on assignments often ambiguous and difficult to understand. Forced class to turn in an uncompleted lab. Class average on this assignment was 1/4, most students lost 2% off their final grade.
You better have great lab partners and access to Google, because she is no help. She does not teach you anything during the lab. She'll begin each class with a 10 minute lecture of what is expected of the lab and that's it. She does not answer any questions and makes you feel dumb for not knowing chemistry. Take chem lab from someone else.
Leslie isn't the best lab teacher. She doesn't go over the procedures in class. She's a tough grader and never explains why you didn't get it right. She seemed closed off and grumpy, uninterested in the success of her students. I would recommend taking lab from almost any other teacher.
I don't get how she got good reviews, she is so boring. Offers no extra credit. As long as you do your prelabs, post labs, and data sheets you'll be fine. But she does grade tough sometimes, and if you don't turn one in it's difficult to get an A. (everything is four points).
She might be better for a lecture. In lab she was very hands off and not very helpful at all. Questions were usually left unanswered, most of the time I had to ask my lecture professor for help instead. all of the laps, pre-labs, and post-labs are worth 4 points. missing any assignment will hurt you a lot. she will not allow late work.
Lab was the reason I passed chemistry. I was assigned to a hard working group and the professor was very helpful in walking us through our questions. Lab never ran super late and we generally got out early! She is a good teacher.
I liked the labs and how she did a mini lecture before class. Some of the assignments are difficult and she is a tough grader, but gives you feedback and will look over your work before turning it in and tell you if the answers need to be modified. Overall the class wasn't hard to pass. Just do all the assignments and come to class.
Ive never had a professed seem so disinterested in her students. Have a question? Dont bother because she wont help and makes you feel dumb. I dont understand her grading either, basically wants you to read her mind and write it down for pre, post and in class labs. Easy class shes just not the best teacher to take from
She wants everything handed in very detail oriented. She isn't super helpful in class with questions, we used google a lot to help clarify things. There are no breaks for late work so make sure your pre-labs are done before class.
She doesn't offer any make up work for medically excused absences, she is over the top about her grading policies, and she will make you feel stupid about any question she wants. Very disinterested in her students and her labs don't follow the lecture class at all.
This professor is one of the worst I've had. She is very condescending and unhelpful when it comes to explaining things. Her lab worksheets are poorly designed and hard to follow. It feels like she doesn't care at all about her students learning and comprehension.
leslie is a VERY tough grader, and she expects the students to know everything, and if you don't she makes you feel stupid for asking the question. A lot of the other students had felt the same about her in my class.
She is extremely hands off during lab. Says a few words at the start of the class and then sits looking at the internet. She is a tough grader that gives no feedback on what she was looking for. Only good part is that accuracy during the lab doesn't matter and the internet can answer most lab questions. Avoid if possible.
Professor Abplanalp is a VERY tough grader. Some times I dont even understand where shes getting her calculations when grading assignments - for example, she will use 2.67 out of 4. She doesnt explain anything she just expects you to read the lab procedure and know how to do everything. When asking questions shell make you feel dumb, so dont.
Professor Leslie is really nice. I would email her asking that I don't get some parts of chemistry and she would explain it to me like ABC's. She would help you if you did not get some parts of chem lab and transitioning online during Covid she was really supportive!
Leslie is really nice and willing to help if you have any questions. the labs are pretty easy and clear. she does expect you to have good answers on your labs she will take off points if you miss as much as one word
No disrespect to Professor Abplanalp as a person, but she is a terrible professor. She deserves to be fired from her teaching position and forced to find work elsewhere. She clearly cares nothing about what she's teaching. She's an EXTREMELY tough grader. Gives a lot of homework for a 1 credit class. I'd give her a 0 out of 5 if I could.
Professor Abplanalp was nice and could teach well, but she didn't do a lot to help in the classroom and sometimes there was clear, unanimous confusion. She is also a MERCILESS grader. It sometimes felt like she was looking for any excuse to take points for small mistakes. Based on how I did in chem1210, my grade should've been a lot higher.
Look, I get that you want kids to get the right answer and do the work. But when I say this professor is the TOUGHEST grader of all time I mean it. She will literally find any reason to dock you points, even if you ask and confirm before you submit that you had an correct answer. This is the worst lab class I have taken. Take it from ANYONE else
I'll be real I came into this class not really knowing what to expect from this professor. My first impression was that she's super chill and easy going. Don't be fooled. She will pick apart every assignment that you turn in. I checked with her after class multiple times to make sure my work was correct, and still got points deducted. BEWARE
She's really laid back and chill. Grading- she will pick apart every detail. No textbook and doesn't teach you about the lab, rely on chem class. If you don't, you'll have no clue what is going on. The pre-and post labs don't help with the lab at all. Take a different lab teacher if I could. You have to go into class to get points, no make-ups.
Professor Leslie Abplanalp is an awesome professor. She knows how to explain the lab so students can understand. She is great !
Wish I could rate her as a 0. No instruction in class, then extremely harsh grader on post labs with 0 direction of what she's looking for. Will also receive grades after assignments are closed so you don't get a chance to fix or learn from mistakes made.
You cannot see your grade in class. Period. If you want to improve your grade that's also too bad because she's an extremely harsh grader and doesn't tell you where you went wrong nor does she have hours. The whole class felt like 4 credit hours. No late work accepted, and everything is submitted via pictures. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you want a chill teacher who does not require much from you other than turning in your work and attending labs then you'll love her. But if you want a teacher that is helpful and wants to help you succeed, she is not the one for that. Tough grader, does not interact with her class. Has AI read her procedures.
She is a very tough grader, would take off most points for misspelling a single word. Couldn't even tell the diffrence between ammonia and acetone during a lab class, and refused to acknowledge the mistake. Doesn't teach you anything nor help with labs.
Started class like 30 minutes late. Siri read the lecture not her so that's fun. She is a really tough grader and the communication is not great.
I would try to get another professor if you can. You will be quizzed on things that are not in the materials provided or discussed in class. You show up to class and she has the computer read the procedure. She does not show your overall grade until the end of the course and makes you feel dumb if you ask questions.
Definitely shouldn't be a teacher obviously doesn't want to be one. She pretty much does nothing during class besides take attendance. When you ask her a question she usually seems so confused and rarely get the answer you need. seems incompetent in the subject. take anyone else.
she seems kind of nice, a very tough grader. She is terrible at giving feedback. the most you get is a "good job" even when you ask what you did or how to fix it. The labs are pretty hard and you really need to know what you're doing. she doesn't teach or help at all, you figure it all out by yourself. attendance required.
I took Leslie for biolab 1615. They weren't really involved in the labs, skimmed over a powerpoint at the beginning of class and then let us follow the textbook for the labs. Most of the points are from attendance and a lot of the homework questions are just pictures of the labs so attendance is a must. Not a great teacher but a fun class overall.
Leslie is easily the worst professor I have had at SLCC. She is extremely unapproachable and does not help you to understand material. AI reads the lab procedure. If you message her outside of class for clarification on anything she will tell you to talk to her in class about it. Grading is all over the place. Highly don't recommend.
This class was terrible. She is no help if you have questions in regards to an experiment. Very tough grader. Would grade off correctness and grammar even though most of the questions on quiz did not involve equipment we used or an experiment done. Used an AI voice reader to read aloud or skimmed the powerpoints super quickly. DO NOT TAKE!
She dosent want to help you during lab. She uses AI to read the procedure and her grading is all over the place. Everytime I asked her a question she would seem annoyed and wasn't very knowledgeable or helpful. You are going to have to learn EVERYTHING by yourself if you take this class. and she always has your grade on lock so you can't see it
She truly doesn't care about her students education at all. She has AI read the ENTIRE introduction and procedure (which you have to read in order to do the pre lab) and proceeds to sit in the front of the class reading emails and grading. Which is ironic because you can't see your grade until after the semester ends. I hated her class
Professor Abplanalp has a very particular teaching style. While the lectures can be a bit dry, using unstuck AI alongside the free textbook helped me stay on track. Tough grader, but engaging if you put in the work.
This lady uses an AI reader to explain the labs, doesn't teach anything at all, and then sets you loose in the lab with little to no instructions to try to poke your way through the lab. Her canvas grades are locked you have to add up all your assignments and figure it out yourself (her words), and she acts annoyed when you ask her questions.
DO NOT TAKE especially if you have any accommodations. She does not care about your accommodations and will fight you. Not sure if she has Tenure but uses it for her advantage. Uses a AI reader to read lab instructions. Lets you loose with little to no knowledge of what the lab instructions are. Extremely judgmental and can have an attitude.
Do not take her class. She doesn't help, only uses IA reading for lab instructions, and gives no feedback. Grades aren't posted until the end semester, so you don't know if you're passing or failing. Only one lab makeup allowed. No support, no teaching, just stress. Avoid if you can.
Easily the worst instructor I've ever had — completely unhelpful, dismissive, and doesn't actually teach. Labs are introduced by an AI voice with zero explanation, questions are ignored, and grades are hidden with no transparency. Everything I learned came from YouTube and classmates, not her — this class was a waste of time, money, and sanity.
