Professor Harlacker is new to Jmu, and pretty young. Overall, the class is pretty good. Lectures can seem long some mornings, but the material is interesting and she is enthusiastic about what she is presenting. Overall, i would recommend this class, it is an very easy A or B. Just go to class and study the exam reviews!
Very nice woman. I had her at 9:05 am and fell asleep every morning; however, she is very interested in the subject and knows her stuff. Easy A/B if you study for the tests which arent that difficult.
This class was Primate Social Behavior. I thought it would be interesting but I ended up hating it. Lectures are boring and exams require you to remember so many small details. She is nice but I'm pretty sure I will never take a class with her again.
If you're interested in evolution theories this class is great. I found the material really interesting and if you pay attention in class its not hard. She is really helpful and very clear. Definitely take this to fulfill gened requirement!
prof harlacker is really nice, the tests are prettyu hard and there are only 3 2-page papers. also, if you arent an anthro major or something close, this class is going to be painfully boring. she's a good teacher, but i dont recommend for a gen-ed.
Professor Harlacker is a really nice lady. She is so passionate about what she teaches, and really knows her stuff. There are 3 essays, but they're not particularly hard. She preps you fairly well for all the assignments and exams. It's a lot of information, so you'll definitely have to hit the textbooks at some point. Overall, I'd recommend h
Really sweet and helpful. Knows her stuff and tries to get everyone to succeed. I really struggled with this class and did horrible on the exams, but the assignments were helpful and really raised my grade. Ended up with a B. Also gave extra credit that helped me. Probably too hard for a gen ed class, but for a pre-requisite, I'd recommend her.
Run away screaming and pulling your hair out. That will be way more fun than ever having to step in the same class with this teacher.
I loved this class. Great for anyone who is an Anth major or minor! Only draw back was the 10 page research paper. Only two essay format tests.
This class was awful in and of itself, but Dr. Harlacker made it worse. She knows everything about the topic, but has no clue how to teach it. Class was boring, tests were hard, I can't believe this was a GenEd. Awful.
She makes class interesting with her vivid powerpoints, videos, and random interesting facts. Shes knows tons about the subject and is really helpful when you ask. Don't expect this class to be a pushover but if you study some like any real college student and are interested then its a great class.
She is the hottest teacher and was so hot at Indiana University.
Class was interesting and powerpoints were very clear and concise. She is a very nice woman and is always happy and in a good mood. Post lecture outlines before each class so there's very little actual note-taking needed. Tests were pretty easy! Definitely take her!
i loved this class! yes, it is a lot of work, but if you really like the subject, you will have no worries. harlacker is great!
Way too detailed for a gen.ed., I thought. Posts up lecture outlines, which help and the textbook is a good resource, too. She's a sweet lady but seems so nervous when she teaches. Just so much information we were expected to know! Some of it was helpful but most of the time I felt like I was in a real anthropology class instead of a gen.ed.
The class is terribly boring if you're not really interested in every detail of Biological Anthropology. Way too in depth for a GenEd. She also has this really irritating throat clearing habit. Tests aren't too difficult though if you read the book thoroughly.
This class was seriously terrible. Assignments were way too hard for a gen-ed and she words her questions so awkwardly, you don't even know what she's talking about most of the time. Terrible lecturer, nervous all the time so she studders(sp?) a lot and is really just all around awkward. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN AVOID IT.
Harlacker is very knowledgeable in Biological Anthropology but her breadth of knowledge can sometimes be a bit over your head. However, if you ask for help, she's completely willing to help. Also, read the textbook closely and you should do well on quizzes and tests. I don't believe in the "easy A", which is good because she will challenge you!
I felt like this class was way too serious for a gen-ed. I worked really hard and ended up with a B. If you're just looking to fulfill your gen-ed requirement, I would avoid.
Yes, Harlacker is a smart lady... but this class is seriously torture. She rambles on like a nervous student for 50 minutes while you have no idea what she is talking about. She goes from topic to topic with no sense of how anything relates. She knows her stuff, but is terrible at teaching it. Tests are out of 30 points aka damn near impossible.
Unless you are a complete Anth buff and want to memorize the smallest details about 30 types of monkeys, 50 types of fossils, and 20 different theories... stay away, it is NOT worth your trouble.
If you are an Anthropology major or are just really interested in the subject, I would recommend taking Harlacker. I felt that sometimes she was trying to be too professional at times and gets nervous when things stray away from her lecture, but I learned a lot about bio anth. If you have questions, she's very accommodating and friendly.
Be prepared to learn a lot of latin names for different species of primates and early humans, but if you can get past that challenge, it's a relatively easy class. Not the most exciting class, but I feel like I learned a lot. Final is cumulative but otherwise exams are not too hard. Weekly quizzes but she tells you what to study.
She is very well organized and has her lectures posted online. Not the most interesting class, but she tries. Tests are very difficult. A lot to study. I ended up with a B+.
For a gened, this class is terribly in depth. Be prepared to learn more than you ever wanted to know about the topic. The lecture can be torture, but the tests aren't impossible. She is so nice, but is obviously uncomfortable lecturing infront of a crowd. Class is pretty dry, but if you're interested in the material, I guess it would be okay.
AWFUL. I hated going to the class. We counted how many times she said um/uh in an hour and 15min class, over 700. She doesn't sound knowledgeable at all. Only good part is that you barely have to do any work and all the exams are take home open note/internet.
This class is for education majors. She is a very nice lady just confusing at times and goes into deep detail when it isn't needed. She seems more lenient than she really is-- grades pretty hard on some things. Overall, very nice, but I agree that her lectures can just be boring at times.
Kinda boring but super helpful and nice. and she makes stone tools for you. it's way legit!!! if you arn't scared to ask for help during labs totally take her!
I really liked this class and loved Harlacker. She obviously really loves what she's teaching and wanted all of us to love it as much as she did. The class was really interesting and although hard I learned a LOT. There was only one real test, the final, and a few projects, with smaller reports and labs. I highly recommend this class!
I had her for GANTH and this class and I do not understand why anyone would think her classes are impossible. I'm not an anthropology major and as long as you go to class you will do fine. I didn't read the textbook either time. She is so nice and so helpful. Sometimes it'll go over your head but you can email her about anything and she alwas helps
Okay if all you need is that lab credit. She's really nerdy and you can tell she practices her lectures which is cute! didnt participate or try to learn at all and got a b
She is super nice and friendly and very approachable if you ask questions. Not much work outside class, but take the labs seriously because she grades them pretty precisely. But she is always willing to help if you ask.
Great teacher! Had her for maymester. 1 short essay, and a page long article review weekly. If you go to class and pay attention, the tests are so easy. A little picky on in class assignments, lots of group work. I loved this class! Put in some effort and its an easy A, maybe B if its not your thing. I would recommend her to anyone.
Run for your life! This class should be 4 credits but it is 3. She is very confusing, & not very helpful. You won't see grades until months after turning things in. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Definitely Recommend for a Lab credit. The class was very boring and it felt like we did the same exact thing every single class which was annoying, but its all group work so its not so bad, only once a week. She doesn't really do any teaching unless you have questions but she's very sweet and seems nervous in front of people.
Why is this not a four credit class? The level of material is beyond insane. You never get any grades back until after the semester is over. While, she is obviously very passionate about the topic, I just...I can't.
I don't think she realizes this is a 1 credit class. The amount of work we have to do for this class is ridiculous and the quiz questions are too in depth. Also, she grades the labs as if we are supposed to know everything about anthropology. Stay away from this class.
I'm pretty sure the only reason why I managed to get through this class is because my lecture professor was so awesome, and we had a T.A. Way to much work for a 1 credit class. The entire semester is group work and then you have to take a final by yourself on every single thing you learned. Don't take if you don't have to.
I took this 1 credit lab because I thought it would be an easy A. She is very picky on grading the labs. Go to class or else you have to make up the lab alone (without your lab group). No assessments until final which is hard. You have 3 minutes per lab station then a open-ended writing section. Helpful and super nice but hard if not anthro major
I had her for The Evolution Of Human Health and Disease, I can't figure out why her reviews were so poor. We had two tests, a midterm and a final, three 2 page papers, and a final project. I didn't study more than 40 minutes for either test, I didn't get below an A on anything I turned in and I didn't do any of the readings. I definitely recommend!
For a one credit class it wasn't bad. No homework, just in class lab assignments that you do with a group. The final was kind of hard and you do it alone. Overall not a hard class. Personally I think it was better than having to take a chem or bio lab for gen ed credit.
Great class and great professor. She isn't the greatest speaker when it comes to giving lectures, however one-on-one conversation is great. Her classes are super fun and interesting. I recommend her for her labs.
Not a bad class to take for a Gen Ed. She doesn't teach much and can be awkward to approach in class (she's always on the computer during labs), but for a one credit class its pretty straightforward. There's probably better classes to take to fill your lab requirement, but if you have to take this one its not bad.
She is a very nice and helpful professor!! This class is pretty straight forward. Taken with ANTH 196 it relates many of the ideas and topics that are covered in class in a hands on manner. Expect to have group labs every class period that you meet, with an individual final at the end of the semester.
The lab wasn't necessarily easy, but it wasn't too difficult. She could sometimes be a harsh grader on labs. Reading quizzes every class for the non coreq sections, which varied on difficulty. Really helpful and sweet, but can seem quite timid if you don't talk to her first. Final was a bit tough and hard to prepare for. Would recommend though!
Professor Harlacker is the best. 10/10 would recommend. IDK why she has any bad reviews. The class is straight-forward. Difficult material but not impossible. The whole class is group work so try to get a good group. Prof is really friendly and approachable!
She is a nice lady, but the material is extremely difficult. Majority of your grade is the group work and the peer evaluation, but the final is about 30%. If you have no interest in biological anthropology just avoid taking ISCI 104 entirely.
Not too bad I had the worst grade in the lab going into the final which was like an 88% and still got a high C on the final and finished with a B
Kind of strange sometimes, but good professor. Labs take up most of your grade, and participation with your group is important. Almost everything is group work, and most labs are done in class.
Harlacker is a great professor! Her classes are tough (she's a meticulous grader and you need to know the details), but you walk away really learning the material. She does lots of labs/hands on activities that are fun and beneficial. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.
Tests are very hard and confusing. Mainly graded by them too. DO NOT TAKE FOR GENED
A great professor and very passionate. She gets a lot of info across clearly and makes it interesting by adding some humor and stories. Beware, her tests and semester0long assignments are the majority of the grade and she is a tough grader, but if you pay close attention to detail you will do fine. Not an easy A but would def recommend!!
I'm an anth minor so this class was a requirement, but it's easy. Just pay attention in class and do the assigned readings (when she has them), and you'll be fine. There are quizzes nearly every week that are 25% of the grade, and the other 75% is the four exams.
Professor Harlacker is a very sweet lady but this class was ridiculously hard for a gen-ed. My biology major friends basically had to teach me everything. She expects that all her students are familiar with in depth biology terms. probably the most annoying part was how tough of a grader she was. basically, avoid this class but good luck if you do.
Took this class as a General requirement. She genuinely had a passion for anthropology which is refreshing. Nobody generally did horrible on the labs because its group work. Very little outside work, lab 1 and 7 are easy. She can be a bit of a tough grader but as long as you study hard for the final and do what she says, you can get an A.
As a person Dr. Harlacker is very nice and caring, but not the best choice for Bio Anth. The material is hard as it is, but rather than teach it like a survey level she assumes her students know as much as she does. Timed weekly quizzes on articles that are difficult to comprehend, and tests that require you to truly know what you're talking about.
Prof Harlacker is a nice person, but don't take this class as your lab credit- do something fun lol. There are several labs, individual quizzes, group quizzes, and one final exam. Lots of labs and group work, but the final was stupidly hard.
I have never taken an anthropology class before and I found this one fairly easy. The lectures are really boring and has a lot of information with no words on the slides, so you have to listen. Tests are all short answer but you choose which questions to answer. Grades easy on papers and projects and places extensions on almost every assignment.
Not accessible at all. Would't reply to emails and as the semester came to a close, my group was unsure if, when, or how the exam would be administered. She's a nice lady, but if you need a professor who will work with you outside of class, she's not the best choice.
The lectures are so boring it's insane. I had no clue I was signing up for a class all about monkeys and it was awful. I worked so hard to get a b, and it was not worth my time at all. The tests were online with lockdown browser no camera and it was impossible to find info about the material online, for a while I was convinced she was making it up!
Very very very lecture heavy. You don't get to know her unless you take the lab alongside the class. Very helpful in lab and accessible via e-mail and office hours. Does not really explain papers until last minute before they're due. Tests are long and have very complicated/descriptive questions so they're difficult to do well on. Weekly responses.
This class is pretty easy. Labs are pretty self explanatory. Professor Harlacker is always willing to help students on labs as well. We work on labs in groups and we also don't have any tests!
Professor Harlacker is one of the sweetest profs I've ever had. Very accomidating, lots of assignments to boost your grade. While it is all lectures, the information is really interesting and she adds a lot of fun jokes and stories to keep everyone engaged. Overall, the class is pretty easy and enjoyable if you show up and try on the assignments.
If you need a lab credit, this is the one to take! I'd reccomend her for the lecture too. You choose a group that you will stay with all semester. One lab per week with a packet to fill out and a final exam. Will make an online lab for you if you miss, but it's always harder to do than in person. Very helpful and accomidating!
This is a 1 credit lab class. There is a quiz once a week due before the lab that corresponds to it; however, she posts the quiz a day or two before it is due but doesn't tell you, so you have to be ready to check. The labs are graded as a group and you have to come to class, or do it by yourself online which is harder. There is a difficult final.
Dr. Harlacker is hands down my favorite professor at JMU. She explains things in a matter that makes sense and is always there if you need help. Reading the backgrounders before the lab can be very helpful and there is very little reading/assignments. She is a reasonable grader and gives you many opportunities to make up missed labs.
This course is super interesting and informative if you are interested in a career in paleontology or medicine! All assignments are straight forward and the workload isn't half bad. Although the lectures sometimes can be a little slow, if you watch the recordings you can put it in 1.5x speed ;)
This professor only has our tests grades in, so I have no idea what my final grade will be. Our final is in a week and not a single assignment is graded. Tests are very difficult but taken online. Lectures are very boring but a lot of memorization is required to do well.
So sweet, cares about her students and is very passionate about what she teaches. Weekly packback posts for participation aren't that bad and same with socrative questions. Group work is all by participation too. Few papers and she doesn't grade tough, all exams online and can take whenever. Not into anthro but definitely a good class to take.
Harlacker does not answer emails no matter how many times you try to contact her, she does not mention assignments you are just to do them (we had short essay 1 and 2 and she didn't grade 1 before we had to do 2) shes an easier grader but the questions she asks are out of the blue or so specific you would have to have the lecture in front of you.
Harlacker is definitely very scattered. You do not need to show up to lectures - fewer people throughout the semester. She grades very slowly but is an easy grader. Tests are online. Responds to emails and answer questions (on outlook, not canvas.) Lots of easy participation grade boosters (Socratic, packback, and Friday online activities.)
Very nice and funny. Lectures are long but notes are easy if you pay attention. Once a week you have to submit something online which takes 5-10 mins. In class, you answer questions on an app real time which are easy points. Grading is fair (but she takes a while) and tests are fair, but study! She's a brilliant woman and id 100% take her again!
This is probably the easiest gened by far in any of the clusters. Im at a 100 and ive only went to lecture once and it was on the first day. No need to stress at ALL for this class, look up ANTH 196 jmu on quizlet and it will be your best friend in this class literally (NO KIDDING). Overall, she's a very nice and caring prof so take her!!
This class is great when you take it in conjunction with ANTH 196! Professor Harlacker gets straight to the point on lab days and is super helpful with any and all questions you may have. A great pick for ISCI 104.
Nice lady ! You work with your group the entire semester so it truly matters who you pick for a group (even though you may not know them) all group members get the same score. You pick in the beginning of the semester if you want group assignments to be work 10 or 30 % of your grade.
For this course, she let us do every lab with our group (that was the same throughout the entire semester), so you always had people to work with! This was a very collaborative class that still allowed everyone to learn more about the material even as a gen-ed. She made this class what all gen-eds should be like.
Exams are very difficult and require a lot of studying. A difficult class to take for a gen ed.
Ok I dropped this class (don't take it as an "easy" gen ed because its not) you need to pay attention a lot and its very lecture heavy and boring. Leslie is a very nice lady, I just think this class is a little difficult if you're looking for an easy gen ed!
Generally nice professor for a gened, but slow grader. Given she doesn't have a TA and grades for 100+ students, I know that grades come in late. However, it is currently December and I currently only have one grade in for the first exam from early September (not the other two exams OR two papers) Moderately difficult work, but manageable.
I took ANTH196L, which is the lab. I had such a fun time in this class because of the group that I got to do labs with, and all of the assignments were pretty straight-forward. She's obviously super passionate about the material and was always more than willing to answer questions while in class. Would recommend for an easy lab gen ed.
Professor Harlacker was not bad, her grading criteria was clear, she was very flexible with late assignments. The only bad thing is that you didn't know your actual grade until the very end of the semester but I guess since she let people turn in stuff late it made sense. Lots of reading!
Daily attendance gets checked by Socrativ. Tests were asynchronous but really long. Accepting of late work! Grades mainly on effort and participation, never received any feedback but also never received a grade lower than an B. Didn't receive grades until after finals. Really pay attention to the way the class is divided, percentage wise!
Decent class. Homework was easy, and the one paper we had to write was easy. Tests are online, therefore pretty easy. Don't expect for anything to be graded through the entire semester. She puts everything in two days before grades are due. Nice lady, but class was incredibly boring. I don't think anyone payed attention in this class. I recommend.
Boring lectures, no one paid attention. Easy as a gened. Tests are online and lockdown. A lot of busy work for a gened but doable. I also had her for lab. Attendance is mandatory for lab, always gives more work than time allows for but you can work on stuff outside of class and turn it in. Final for the lab is with group members. I recommend.
Lectures are not engaging. You may or may not receive responses to your emails. Packback is very annoying.
I have no grades in canvas other than 3 exams, there are weekly assignments on Fridays and homework every week, essays and none of these have been graded or added into canvas. I would not recommend taking her for the lecture, unless you know everything about anthropology. She rarely in her online office hours during the times posted on canvas.
In this class, you will work together in groups. You'll need a Packback account for weekly discussions and to write three short papers (each around 500 words) and one longer final paper (about 1200 words). It's a good class for students who aren't studying science. The workload is reasonable, and if you put effort into your work, you'll do well.
Did not put a single due date in cavas. 6 emails that have not been answered in two months.
Class was just long boring lectures and Fridays were zoom. Put in groups that you had to do assignments on. Had to do a packback projects that are long and tedious. She doesn't care if you do anything late as she grades EVERYTHING at the end of the semester so you dont know your grade until the end, beware of losing track.
All semester we were given resources to complete the labs (which by the way the labs are crazy long for no reason making it hard to complete within a class period) but on the final we were given nothing. Incredibly long and hard exam with absolutley no way to concretely prepare. AVOID!!! I WANTED TO TAKE THIS LAB BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS EASY TOO.
This class was kind of a scattered mess. Didn't know my grade until the end of the semester. Very easy grader of the essay and short article reports you have to do, but again, don't expect to get your grade back fast. Exams are tricky. Seems to get off track easily or over-explain concepts, so we were behind in lecture material all semester.
Lectures were fast-paced & packed w/ information so it was hard to absorb it all. All tests online at home & weekly asynchronous online discussion. Very difficult material and course overall. Professor Harlacker seemed nice but she didn't reply to a single email. Lectures were mainly very dry but sometimes she would make a joke or curse lol
Always showed up to class right at the starting time or a few minutes late. I took her for the lab so everything was on you and your lab partners. Never got a bad grade on any of the labs.
She's a sweet woman- a bit of an oddball. I took her for lab which was good cause I liked my group. The course is entirely groupwork, but we've finished the class and I still don't know my grade (the labs we got back were graded pretty lightly though). As a non-science person who needed the gen-ed, I'd recommend.
Just like any other professor, meets the usual standards. Lab's are sometimes not in line with the lecture in the corresponding class, which makes it hard to keep up with what is going on.
Simple, Lab-based work. No homework, but attendance is everything
She's nice and helps when you need it. But the semester is almost over rn and she still hasn't graded anything which is very stressful. Labs are easy. Class meets once a week. Make sure you get a group that is committed to being there every week.
Not a bad professor, but lectures are boring and a horrendous communicator/grader. Sometimes doesn't respond to emails and takes months to grade papers or tests. 4 midterms with lowest dropped, final, and some completion/participation grades. Not terribly hard but just boring.
takes forever to grade. she says attendance is mandatory but in my experience she hasnt taken attendance more than twice. very lecture heavy and no matter how much i study i cant seem to get the hang of the content, but if you like fossils and primates then i recommend. overall wouldnt take the class again but nothing wrong w the prof
Do not take this class unless you have a strong passion for anthropology. I have 3 grades in for the entire semester. There are weekly discussion posts, a group assignment almost every week, 4 exams + final, 2 article summaries, and a paper. For a gen ed credit, I personally think the workload is a bit much. Also does not post lectures or slides.
I had her for lab; she seemed super chill and nice. Not a tough grader and just let us work on the lab in groups, and the final was with our groups, which was nice. She doesn't respond to email, so beware of that. Overall, she was nice. I didn't take her for lecture, so im not sure how it is!
genuinely the least professional professor i've ever taken. Never showed up on time to class, extremely unprepared all the time, didn't know how to teach, never put anything from the study guide on the exam, the worst professor possibly ever.
Professor Harlacker was an engaging professor, however she was not very good at grading assingments/exams in a timely manner. I never knew my actual grade throughout the semester. While that was frusterating, she does give you the opportunity to correct all of your exams except the final if you do poorly. Overall, I would not take this course again
She will make you watch lectures as she will show up late 99% of the time and not finish the material. There is quite a bit of outside work that needs to be done but the tests are relatively easy, and she will drop your lowest score.
