Wonderful teacher! Really makes you think and helps you to write better papers. She is fair in her grading and cares about her students. No tests, just essays and a big 2000 word paper as a final grade.
Such a wonderful experience, she taught me a lot about writing and became rather close to our class. Very helpful with the whole learning process in writing.
Great teacher. No tests, only papers. Really works with students to make sure they understand what is going on. By far, the best English experience I've gotten.
Take this professor if you want to take an incredibly biased class and if you want to be bombarded with her liberal opinions.
She talks more than she lets us discuss in class. The class would be more efficient if she would let us reason through the arguments as a class rather than telling us what to think.
really taught me how to write, no reading assignments but everyone did an indiv and group oral pres. LOTS of papers (every week!) topics too broad at times. i learned a lot but it was a difficult class and i am usually a good writer!
I did not enjoy Dr. Kaplan's class at all. She graded very hard, and at some points very unfair. Her lectures consisted of her opinions only, and anything said against her was passed over and not even taken into consideration. There are more enjoyable Lit. professors available.
she's very productive, teaches critical thinking, makes you look at an issue from all angles, cares about her students. she definitely helped me improve my writing! the 300 wd. essays every week are easy & help you get used to writing & her grading. 2 oral presentations, 1000 wd. paper, & 2000 wd.
She is a great teacher. This class is not easy, but by the end you will be a much better writer. She pushes you but is also very helpful along the way. Highly recommended.
She is kinda weird. If you like talking about the same thing everyday of the semester then she's the teacher for you. She is easy though, it's just hard to take the class seriously.

If you like to write then you'll like her. Assignment due everyday. In my class all we talked about was abortion... everyday... However she is a good teacher that will help you to improve your writing skills, just not easy so expect work. Also 4 missed classes = failure.
not clear on writing topics, and large essays to write.
She's a pretty good teacher, but she gives TARDIES. uughhh... we aren't in high school anymore are we? She's big on attendance and tardies.
Great teacher! There is a lot of reading and writing assignments ("busy work") but they are very easy if you go to class and participate. I would definately recommend this class to anyone that does not mind a little work for an A!
She's a nice lady and knows what she is talking about. But if you took AP Lit in high school, don't take this class. Lots of writing and assignments, and she is tough with grading. Interestinig class discussions though, which are helpful. It's a good class to take, but you will not be challenged if you are used to high level analysis and material.
Her class was OBSCENELY hard. She's a really really nice lady but she grades papers really harshly and you have a lot of BS work to do because she's the head of the English department and you are her lab mice. If you can, try and get a different professor.
Great Teacher! helpful.
You will be a much better writer after getting through Kaplan's class and it will help you with all your other classes too when it comes to papers. Best teacher I've ever had. Definitely go to class always, and go talk to her about papers. She is very nice and really knows how to help students suceed.
Her class is a complete disaster this year. 200+ honors students in one calss. NO organization at all, no structure. Over 75% of the class gets a D or worse on the exam and she blames the students. Do not recommend, sadly the class is mandatory for incoming honors students.
This mandatory honors program class was horrible. The idea is for the freshman class be better introduced to gen. ed, but the topics are completely boring. The main project in the class involves a map program that is online that no one knew how to use and very difficult to find any info for. Diffently do not recommend her for this class.
Awful teacher. Boring, useless class, has no direction whatsoever. Waste of tuesday nights as we listen to all her guest speakers. I didn't study and got a better test score than someone who did. Has too many projects going on at once. We fail and she blames us and not her abysmal teaching skills. Mandatory for honors freshman. Avoid if you can.
Class is a waste of time. There are approximately four projects at the same time. Little to no direction is given. Required for honors freshmen, unfortunately. Most classes are simply lectures about vaguely related topics. Truly a professor to avoid if at all possible.
Most poorly organized class I've ever seen. A complete waste of time. Inconsistent in grading papers. Bad about not returning emails, and not very helpful to people who try to talk to her about frustrations. May have been because it was the trial run for this course, but I refuse to take her again.
worst professor ever, unorganized class. unhelpful and waste of a class.
Mandatory for honors freshman. A lot of people have been giving her crap, I don't blame them, but I don't think she was a bad teacher. Next year's students will have it a lot easier because we were the guinea pig class. Hopefully it's more organized by then. Pray you get a good group facilitator.
I can't objectively rate Dr. Kaplan because this was the first time they held an honors colloquium and because of the level of logistical organization that was required for this class to be successful. She was only one individual. She should probably stick to teaching English, though.
This class was aweful, but that's not to say Kaplans teaching is bad. She didn't really teach the class, but that is the definition of colloquium, different lectures. It was extremely unorganized and difficult to follow what was going on. Hopefully the class will be fixed, but I hated that class with a passion.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. The tests were too broad and and covered material that barely related. Kaplan did no actual teaching. I do not recommend her and I will never take a class of her's again. There was absolutely no organization whatsoever.
The class if very unorganized and almost seems pointless. However, Dr. Kaplan does not really teach the class, so there is no way of me really ranking her teaching ability. She's really nice and approachable and willing to help!
Colloquium is a required class for all incoming honors freshman. The lectures absolutely suck, but they aren't given by Dr. Kaplan so you can't judge her. She is a VERY sweet lady and goes above and beyond to make class as enjoyable as possible. colloquium is a VERY easy A if you just go and do the work. Dr. Kaplan is always willing to help.
Honors Colloquium is required to all incoming freshmen in the honors college. It was a class full of lectures by random professors all about the same thing, immigration. The assignments were incredibly unorganized. When I asked for help and went to her office, she was rarely ever there. It's an easy A, but a lot of stress and annoyance.
Mrs Kaplan has a very good ideal. However, the classes are very unorganized. I cant say if it is her fault. She really works hard to put the class together but it hasnt been enough. The break-out sessions are stupid. We pretty much just sit there and do nothing. Very boring and dumb class but a requirement for the Honors Program.
Great teacher! Does her best to improve the class. Very helpful if you go to her office hours. Definitely take her if you can.
This class is what makes her seem not likable. At first I didn't want to take the class but it turned out to be a nice class that helps you get in the rhythm of college. She is really nice too but sometimes very sarcastic!
Easiest said, the honors freshmen class bond through the mutual hatred for Colloquium. She's not bad, but the class is.
very rude and sarcastic doesn't help much at all. basically she isn't even the professor. grades harshly and expects your interest to balance with hers. the class has nothing to do with being a first time freshman. surely shouldn't be a mandatory class, at all!!!
Dr. Kaplan does not really "teach" Honors Colloquium, however, she is great to get close to and get a recommendation. If you don't like her, be fake. But don't be rude to her. Trust me, a lot of people don't like her. But you need to be resourceful for the future's sake ;)
Class is more than a class, it teaches you about yourself and how you think. She seems distant at first, but when you take more classes and spend more time with her, you see that she is just tying to let you figure things our for yourself. She is very insightful and makes you think and rethink. You get out what you put in. Love her!!
Let me say this: she does NOT teach the course. So, you can't hate her. She's a nice lady and you should go out of your way to get close to her.
Class is a complete waste of time. You actually learn nothing, and I love learning. If you aren't passionate about invisible human interactions and imagined traditions, you will hate this class. I have never hated tuesdays nights (yes its a night class) more in my life. Teacher thinks her class is the most important thing ever.
This class is a joke. Full of busy work and no help. Expects you to drop everything and do random outside assignments. HATED this whole course. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I don't actually know how good Dr. Kaplan is because she doesn't actually do anything. This class was composed of 2 parts: lecture and breakout. For the lecture we had various lecturers come in, and breakout was student led. Dr. Kaplan doesn't grade papers, a "grader" does that. She is as good as a sack of potatoes for this class. DON'T TAKE!!!
Kaplan didn't actually teach this class, she only oversaw it. When she did address the entire class we all wanted to die- so boring! If I had known how terrible this class would be I don't think I would've joined Honors at all. Some adjectives to describe this class are: awful, boring, confusing, disappointing, excessive, frightful....TORTUROUS!!!!
Do not take this class. Do not join Honors.
I was misled into believing the Honors Colloquium was focused on the service project, but it is NOT. There are a LOT of other assignments which are harshly graded, making me constantly fear for my grade. The class is set up well and I became great friends with the people in my small group, but this class had to be my main focus. A LOT of work!!!
Colloquium is a tough course and you have to be dedicated and not slack off in order to get a good grade. The people you meet in there, for the most part, are amazing and you really bond as an honors class. Do your work and show up and you will do well. Spend more time doing the small assignments and not complaining the assignments are easy.
I love Dr. Kaplan. She is the most caring, involved professor I have ever had. She can be a tough grader, but she provides feedback that will help make you a better writer. I also had colloquium with her. She takes feedback from students and is always looking to make the class better. She has taught me several skills that will aid me wherever I go.
Ok colloquium is very involved & is ugh sometimes, but Kaplan is a great resource if you need help. I went to her several times to clear up ?'s on assignments & she explained them clearly to me. She's really smart! Lectures, some were better than others. Breakouts were sometimes pointless. Sometimes Kaplan would speak or come visit your breakout.
Colloquium is rough but not as bad as people make it sound. Don't question why you're doing all of it, just do it, and it'll become clear in the end. Kaplan is an excellent resource and so are your facilitators! Go to your grader's office hours! Don't slack off in this class, it's not an easy A, but it's also not impossible like some people say.
Loved the lecturers she brought in for Colloquium. She genuinely cares about making the class better each year and giving students the best experience possible. It's definitely not an easy A, but this is one of the few classes where you really get as much out of it as you put in.
Colloquium is the most useless and horrible class I've ever taken. Kaplan doesn't actually do anything, infantilizes her students constantly, and is extremely unorganized. This class will do nothing but give you busy work. Things are graded on a check system, and they don't tell you your grade throughout the semester. DON'T TAKE HONORS!
DO NOT TAKE HONORS!!!!!!
Dr. Kaplan is one of the sweetest, most caring professors I have met. She is very helpful and willing to meet about any problems. I highly recommend her classes! Colloquium is unusual, but the lessons taught are important. The "check" grading system is only 20% of the grade, and it really does make sense if you can get past the initial discomfort.
Honors is completely false advertised. There is no point of the Colloquium class and the work is sent forth to only be busy work. There is no learning and the lectures are repetitive. Kaplan does no actually do anything. She doesn't grade or give lectures. The class is too disorganized and incredibly dull. You can hear the moans of everyone.
This class is extremely disorganized, small assignments are graded on a check system so you can't see your grade throughout the semester, and she doesn't know how to work Canvas so you can't even start your assignments until a week before they're due. The honors program overall is cool & has good benefits, but this class sucks.
I don't know what to say other than DO NOT TAKE HONORS! Colloquium will be one of the worst classes you'll ever take- guaranteed. It's unorganized, nonsensical, and is horribly falsely advertised. Don't do it for the service project- that's a very small part and I think how they entice people. Colloquium is horrible and Kaplan is even worse.
Colloquium is so bad just don't even take it. Messy, unorganized, doesn't make sense. Too much busy work
This class is pretty much the worst. Kaplan grades unfairly and the work is meaningless busywork. Bottom line: Do not take this class.
DO NOT DO HONORS. It's pointless with too many assignments that stress students out more than anything. You also don't know your grade until the end of the course, a check system is used until then. I see the point in the class, but honestly was a waste of my time.
She's a great lady outside of class and maybe outside of honors lecture but the lectures and the class itself are pointless. A LOT of busy work homework it seemed and really not worth the effort if your thinking of doing the honors program. The class just isn't fun or interesting, I would rather have spent time working on my minor degree classes
Honors Colloquium was the biggest waste of time. Kaplan is a nice lady but that class was awful. So much work for a class that i was FORCED to take because I'm in honors. I honestly may have opted out of honors if i knew I had to take this course. The content is interesting but the amount of work is so stressful
Colloquium is meant to give you a variety of perspectives on a topic and allow you to integrate it into a service project. Overall it's a wonderful learning experience and Dr. Kaplan is extremely reasonable. The best way to approach this class is to think of each lecture separately until you've gotten to the end and connect everything together.
Colloquium is an entirely different class from any other you take at UNF. Dr. Kaplan's style is different and it is more focused on your growth as a student than just teaching curriculum. Bottom line: You get out what you put into it. Its not easy, but if you work hard you will learn a lot and get an A. Dr. Kaplan is always open to helping you.
I have had the pleasure of taking 3 of Dr. Kaplans classes. Colloquium is not hard, but there are several small assignments due each week. Being in honors is totally worth it for the community and getting to make friends at retreat before classes start! She is one of the kindest and smartest ladies I have ever met, and is always willing to help!!
Dr. Kaplan gets a bit of a bad rep from this class but it is not too bad. The class is a bit unconventional because it teaches skills that are not normally taught in other classes. This class also allows community engagement with Jacksonville's refugee population. It is only part of the class but there are more opportunities to help outside class.
Never gives a rubric for any writing assignment. Made us make up our own prompt for an essay and then told us our prompts were bad. Doesn't announce when there is reading on Canvas, so you'll need to check it all the time. The outside reading (except for the book) is pretty optional bc no grade is attached to it. You must Participate in discussion!
Honors Colloquium was the most pointless class I have taken so far at UNF, horribly disorganized and extremely boring lectures.
Liked the subject, but hated Kaplan. The rubrics she have were always vague in a lot of areas, and when ALL the students told her about how we struggled to an assignment because of the lack of clarification, she just said we were supposed to use critical thinking and spoke for half an hour about how we all just didnt get it.
This class was a joke and Dr. Kaplan was a mediocre professor at best. She never taught the class, instead inviting other professors to come lecture us. She never even graded our assignments, instead having "graders" do it for her, and the one assignment she did grade was a presentation done during the SUMMER that she wasn't even there to see.
Colloquium is a difficult class for the wrong reasons. Everything is super vague, hard to navigate, and confusing. The communicatation within the course between Kaplan and the facilitators is horrible, and 90% of the time you have no idea what is going on. You would have to invest an absurd amount of time to understand and benefit from this course.
This class was a huge pain in the behind. It's long, with useless assignments and you do so many things that are just a waste bro. I only liked the class cuz i got to meet and hang out with some cuties in the service project. oh and the facilitator, yeah i'd hit. The class is also super liberal and left. have fun, peace out.
She is not present unless she lectures (about 2-3 times the semester) and only graded one assignment personally (other assignments were graded by "graders"). I didn't feel like I could reach out to her personally at all, and when she did lecture it often felt like she would read off of a poor outline (which she criticized students on in grading).
Dr. Kaplan is a great woman but the class is very unorganized. It does not allow for a shown grade until the last week of the semester, which is very unhelpful. Graders grade the work and other professors provide lectures. The material is everywhere. However, she is very kind and understanding.
Taking good notes is essential for this class because most of the quizzes were open-note. There were some more challenging writing assignments but in depth feedback was always provided afterword.
I've had Dr. Kaplan twice, once for colloquium and once for ENC1143. For ENC1143, the work isn't hard and she gives good feedback. There were no exams or quizzes. Class time was discussion based and she makes an effort to make sure the class becomes very close knit. She really cares about her students & will meet outside of class with them.
Our grader is not Dr. Kaplan, however the grader is very tough, and the grading system is pretty confusing. I wish this class had a normal grading system to be able to prevent failing.
This class is basic info I learned in civics in 7th grade. However, the quizzes are dumb as hell. Everyone is dropping out because of this. It's a lot of trauma-dumping. It's pushed me to transfer.
Lectures were extremely boring. Came off rude at times but is overall a nice person. Im glad we learned about immigrants but when it came to the family history paper she was unhelpful when i explained my family came over undocumented. Made me regret honors because of all the busy work.
No. Don't take colloquium. Trust me. Just don't.
Do not take this honors course if you can get out of it. Grading is such a mess. The majority of grades are not numerical and you will have no idea what your final grade will be. So much busy work and going in circles.
She is overall a very nice and genuine person, but I literally have no idea what is going on in the class. The grading system is extremely confusing and the guidelines for every assignment are extremely vague. She is not the grader, but the grader grades is very harshly. I don't know how the lesson of being so clueless is supposed to help me.
Her class is easy if you are able to analyze and synthesis information. Her biggest grades come at the end of the semester. And she uses a check system so you won't know your grade until the end. BUT as long as you do the assignments and put effort you will pass easily. TAKE NOTES you'll have a content exam. talk to your grader, they can help.
Don't recommend taking this course, take self and society or Model U.S. The grading is unclear and harsh and has an overload of unnecessary assignments. Dr. Kaplan never teaches her own course but invites others to teach for her. Don't do NIM!
Dr. Kaplan is a nice person but not so great professor. The lectures feel long and unnecessary but also boring. IDH 1923/NIM was on Tuesdays at 6pm-8:45pm. She also isn't the one who grades the assignments so the graders are vague with feedback, take a long time to get back grades, and overall unhelpful. I found this class to be nothing but a bore.
This class was awful. It was a Tuesday night from 6-9 half being a lecture and the other half a breakout group. The lectures were often long and boring and the grading system is absolutely horrendous. You will not have any clue on your grade until the class is over. The graders are harsh and will not respond to any emails regarding assignments.
Awful. For a professor that literally prides herself on grades not mattering, yet gives someone who attended every class, did every assignment etc an A-. Don't even bother with this class it is a waste of time, energy, and stress.
If you do all the work and put in the effort and time required you will be fine, so don't be scared. The work can be boring, and a lot, but you'll grow closer with people in the class. Grading system is confusing, really emphasize the big projects, assignments can be confusing and graders are vague and might not even leave feedback so be prepared.
I am shocked by how many people who don't like Dr. Kaplan. I found her to be an incredibly intelligent, understanding, and funny person who cares about her students. She is very responsive to email. I didn't love the grading system but ended up making an A so it was ok. The lectures could get boring, but the assignments/ breakout were interesting.
Kaplan does provide help outside of class but over all a very impersonal teacher. This is the first class you have to take to be in honors and it's rough. Kaplan has graders who grade tough, and don't provide much feedback on the work. One of the graders claimed to hate the job and it felt as though she was taking her anger out on our grades.
Professor Kaplan is an awful professor. She rarely teaches the class, yet she's the head of the class. She doesn't grade anything except for a project that is done of the Summer The class is three hours long on Tuesday nights (6-9), and there's a lot of busy work. Considering that this class is an elective class, it was harder than my core classes
Professor Kaplan is a horrible professor. Lectures are long and boring, but for some reason you are required to attend even though majority of the work in class has nothing to do with the material from the lectures. Her grading system is confusing, you will not know your grade until the class is almost over, and the grades seem almost random.
The class is mainly run by her students and graders, and she relies on other people to teach for her. The canvas is messy and confusing, and the graders are harsh and do not give good feedback. Most of the time, the work we are doing in class does not relate to what we are learning.
Although I did not enjoy the class, I think Dr. Kaplan is a good teacher. She is always available when asking for help, but lectures are so boring. Most of the work took very long to complete and therefore was overwhelming, we paid for TopHat and then barely used it so that was also another slight frustration.
If you are taking the honors colloquium class, good luck. All of your assignments will be harshly graded by upperclassmen students. There are tons and tons of assignments that you have to keep up with and be responsible for, and the class is barely taught by Dr. Kaplan, but by facilitators and random guest speakers. Do not recommend.
If you are lucky enough to have found this, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! This class went on until 9 pm and had the most frustratingly poor communication in all aspects of the class. It was the largest headache and waste of time in my entire life. SO MUCH homework and busy work. The best way to describe this class is "doing kindergarten all over again."
The lectures are too long and annoying, and there is so much work; I am unsurprised that many people were caught cheating or that this class was the only one left out of the others. The class is no fun, and I do not recommend this professor.
Honestly this class is just boring and feels so unnecessary. To me it just seems like a class giving you all this information you already knew and saying how much of a good community Honors is when were mostly just students with common decency. I despise how late this class is, it lasts from 6:00 to 8:45 (split by lecture and then breakout)
Dr. Kaplan might be the professor for this class, but was very hard to get in touch with. All of the assignments were harshly graded by upperclassmen students and half of the time, the grades didn't align with the work. The lectures were guest speakers and didn't help with the assignments. With all the busy work, she was like an absent mother.
Lecture heavy, a lot of tedious and sometimes seemingly unneccessary assignments that have nothing to do with national
Class it boring, but the breakout aspect was fun. Lectures are boring, and you'll do a lot of reading to talk about stuff that isn't all that important. Expect to have lots of busy work, and to do volunteering outside of class for the breakout requirement. She's not a bad teacher, but the class is just boring and unnecessary.
The lecture is kind of boring and has lots of information, to the point that you miss things while taking notes. My breakout was philanthropy and it was very fun and I enjoyed planning the gala and fundraising. Your leaders for breakout are upperclass honors students and are very nice. The workload is not a lot but there are a few big assignments.
I was told this class was "only once a week and not a huge commitment." you also have to complete 15 service hours for 2 hours, 8 weeks in a row. she is not understanding of student-athletes. docked my final grade 5 points because I missed 3 classes for a game. breakout group instructors are very disrespectful.
This class was very lecture heavy, all about one topic, the class happens at 6pm and doesn't end till almost 9. There are also three required readings, and multiple assignments per week requiring you to attend events in and outside of school.
I have taken several classes with Dr. Kaplan and she is my favorite professor. She is so caring and empathic to students. She responds to emails quickly. In this class, you will mostly interact with facilitators and graders, but Dr. Kaplan is available to help as well. She is an amazing person and I recommend connecting with her outside of class.
This class with Dr.Kaplan has been difficult. However, I would take this class again because it has caused tremendous growth in myself and my peers. Both Dr. Kaplan and our graders were accessible and were very helpful for any possible questions or concerns! I recommend taking this class if this is your first semester.
You have lecture for about an hour an half, most in which had guest speakers, then breakout for about an hour. Doesn't use letter grades for assignment, only Y-, Y, or Y+. the family history paper is the only one you get a letter/% grade for. Most assignments requires you to go out and experience new things, which can be alot. its an ok class
Dr. Kaplan is one of the most disorganized professors with the worst Canvas page ever, arbitrary grading, and a horde of assignments not relating to anything at all. Lectures are repetitive and boring however you are given the chance to rant about it afterwards with peers in the breakout. If the honors benefits are not for you, drop this class.
Professor Kaplan was the worst professor I've had. She is disorganized both in her lectures and canvas page. The graders are grad students who are extremely harsh and picky. Her lectures are boring and repetitive and hardly pertain to the actual assignments. The assignments themselves are hard to find and even harder to navigate and complete. Awful
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had. Disorganized, repetitive and unhelpful. Her teacher assistances grade your assignments like you ate their dog. She is so unclear on her assignment instructions and uses a weird grading system. Horrible.
She does not have clear rubrics for any assignments, just multiple paragraphs which causes confusion. She also makes you do so many assignments for almost no credit. For finals we had 5 separate projects that made up 50% of our grade
Dr. Kaplan is not good a professor, she is very unorganized. Her graders are also horrible and use AI to grade your papers. She grades with Y-, Y, Y+, the only letter grade you get is the family history paper. She changed the weight of grades a week before finals. There is no rubric on any assignments and she cant lecture well.
This class took up so much of my time it's not even funny, TONS of little assignments NOT worth a lot. Changed the syllabus to make things worth less at the end (thought that was illegal). Graders graded super harsh. Don't know your grade till the end- assignments are Y Y+ or Y-. Take another honors class if you don't want to be burnt out.
Incredibly unorganized and falls on the students. The graders are so messy, and you won't know your grade until after the semester ends AND changed the weight of grades all at the last minute. Took up triple of my time than my majors classes did and was nothing but busywork. Everything is biased and I learned nor gained anything other than stress.
