She teaches well, with great examples and methods taught right on the board. As long as you pay attention and take notes, you'll do fine. She's very laid back, as well. Attendance is not mandatory, but missing under 5 days will score you a replacement of your lowest test grade (of the first three tests) with your final exam grade (if higher).
Very good teacher
She is a great teacher and i highly recommend her to anybody who has not taking high school calculus. You must pay attention and actually try the webassigns, etc in order to do well. The one thing i couldn't stand was her favorite quote that goes along the lines of "I really think this optimaztion problem is cute... i think this intergral is cute"..
Great teacher and person.
Kurtz is a really good professor. She's crystal clear and really open to help in and out of class. Her partial credit on tests are more leaniant than I would imagine. Rearrange your schedule to get her, especially if calculus isn't your forte.
Enjoyed the class. Will let you leave early half the time. Lets you have fridays off most of the time.
Always very prepared for class so lecturs flow very smooth... posts helpful study tools on her website prior to tests... also very easy on the eyes
Very clear teaching style and easy to pay attention to.
Very very good! Love her style and so easy to understand.
best math teacher ive had
Great instructor. Lectures clear. Questions accepted. Available for help outside of class.
She is a great teacher. She actually made calculus bearable!
ONe of the BEST math teachers at North Carolina State University
Best math professor ever. Made Calculus fun, interesting, and enjoyable
Best math teacher ever <3 <3 <3
She rocks. Very fair, she loves teaching and math, so shes a great teacher!
Great professor. Very good at explaining the concepts in an understandable way. I did not touch my book the whole semester; her lecture was that good.
Calculus is obviously not going to be your easiest or most fun class, but Kurtz's class is as close as you're going to get to it. Tests are usually similar to the practice tests and worksheets, and she's very helpful, and humorous too. Best professor if you want to do well and actually learn something at the same time.
Great teacher!!!!
She is a great teacher! She writes every step out and is very clear about her methods. The examples in class and for homework are harder than the test material which really prepares you. She has a good sense of humor and every now and then you get friday off! Great professor!
She is a wonderful teacher and has great resources online for test preparation.
She was one of the best teachers I had this year, out of a couple AMAZING teachers. Extremely helpful, willing to go the extra mile, makes tests clear and grades fairly, I hope to take through Dif EQ with her if I'm lucky....
She is an awesome teacher. She makes the tests hard, but not impossible to get an A.
Really great teacher. Super friendly. Kinda boring at times, but explains everything really well. take her she's amazing.
One of the best math professors ever! Lectures are very clear and easy to understand. The webassigns are not too bad, but some of them can be a little tricky. She's very helpful in office hours if you're stuck on the webassign or Maple. Maple is pretty hard but she curves maple grades at the end of the semester. I recommend taking her!
Amazing teacher best I've had at State and she's FINE too!
Best teacher I have had at NC State so far!!! If you have a chance to have her as a teacher do!!! She makes jokes in class and makes class not boring and her teaching methods are awesome.
She is the best math teacher at NC State. Take a class with her, you will not regret it.
Definitely the best teacher I've had at state. I had a terrible asian graduate student for Calc 1 so I was really worried about Calc 2, but she's really great at simplifying complicated concepts and breaks everything down step by step. If you're struggling with calc take her class you will understand better.
She's really amazing. You should get her!
She made an 1 hour and 50 min. class feel short. She offers great practice tests and further explainations for some of the more difficult topics (including example problem). She lets you know exactly what type of problems are going to be tests. And she's quirky.
Kurtz is an incredible teacher and makes everything clear. As long as you pay attention and do your work, you can easily get an A! Best math teacher at NC State hands down.
You only need your book for your test review, I didn't buy the book, instead I shared with a friend. If you take really good notes you don't even need the book. The hardest part of this class was Maple, but thats easy if you use the tutoring.
Not hard
she's without a doubt the best math teacher i've ever had. calc 2 is supposed to be the hardest one, but she definitely makes the it easier. her website is great, and she posts explanations for some harder topics on it along with practice tests and worksheets. and on top that, she's fun, young, hilarious, and pretty attractive as well. take her!
Fun and entertaining teacher. My only complaint is that I felt that some of the tests were harder than they needed to be. Writes great notes, so you have no excuse for not knowing the material. For calc 3 at least, make sure you have your basic integration down, because thats where I made my mistakes, in what I already knew, not what she taught.
Love her! She's my favorite prof. at State so far. She gives great notes and actually has a personality.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had! She explained topics well and graded fairly. She was funny and kept the class interesting.
My favorite teacher at State, her notes are extremely good, and she's very helpful. She also has a fun personality so students tend to enjoy class.
Math is my thing, but I understood things on a whole different level in Calc 3, and I thought it was going to be hard. She broke it down and explained so well, she was great. Genuinely a good teacher, and you can tell she actually wanted to be there. You'd be crazy if you have the opportunity to take her and don't.
My absolute favorite professor at State! Going to her class is genuinely fun because she knows how to relate to students so we have a good time while fully understanding the material. I never could make office hours but I would email her with a question and get an answer that same night. I highly recommend taking her for any math class available.
Calculus 2 is a hard class, but she makes it easy and understandable. Very engaging, great sense of humor, and really wants her students to learn. The tests are fair, and she gives lots of practice. Responds to emails quickly. AMAZING teacher - the best math teacher I've ever had. I highly recommend her for any math class!
Great teacher, she was always willing to help outside of class. Her tests followed the notes for the most part and there were no surprises. I would recommend her for any math class!
Great teacher and is really into teaching
Very clear in explaining concepts in class and works a lot of examples. HW questions are harder than the actual exam and her exams are exactly like the practice ones she posts. She takes student opinions seriously
Wonderful teacher!
Hands down. Best Math teacher.
One of my favorite professors at State. Extremely friendly and helpful. Tests follow closely to practice ones provided. Extra worksheets available to clear up confusing sections. She genuinely cares about her students and clearly goes the extra mile to meet their needs. NOT an easy A, but the resources are there. Utilize them and you will be fine!
She is the best teacher in NC State hands down. Study her example tests and go through the class problems and you'll do perfectly.
Kurtz, is hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had at NC State. If you do the homework and study you will do great!
Very helpful and a very good teacher (probably the best math teacher at NCSU). Work sheets and practice tests are great study materials. If you have her for a 50 minute class, beware her long tests! Unless you know what you're doing for the whole thing, you will not finish in time. If you want an easy A, you may want to try another professor.
Easily one of the best math teachers I've ever had. She's super intelligent, funny, and great at explaining the material. Study your notes and do the practice tests and you'll be just fine.
Great teacher. She's very helpful, concise, and comprehensible and keeps you interested with her humor. And if you are having trouble with the material, she gives plenty of examples in class as well as worksheets and review material online. If you study and attend class, you should be prepared for the tests.
Professor Kurtz is a great professor! Her tests are almost exactly like the practice tests she provides and she's super willing to help with maple andor webassign. She responds to emails quickly. For practice, you just need to make sure you can do the practice tests and the problems we do in class. I'm taking her again for math next semester!
A friend advised me to try to get into her class and I'm glad I did. I've heard horror stories about other professors not covering the material and being condescending to students, but Professor Kurtz was great all semester and made a difficult course bearable. I highly recommend, though don't expect to get a good grade without earning it...
Really awesome teacher. Extremely helpful to students and will go out of her way to give you extra time on assignments. Gives extra credit on the final as well. Only checks attendance like half the time though, but I would still go. Tests are basically the same as all her old ones with different numbers. Fantastic experience.
Dr. Kurtz is a really good teacher, she explains everything very well and is open to answering anyone's questions. She offers plenty of resources to help you practice & study, as well as opportunities to help your grade even if you royally mess up.
Good teacher, easy grader. Doesn't explain much in class. Does more example problems than explanations. I would take advantage of her office hours for more explanations. But she is fair and sometimes very nice about grading. Overall good teacher.
Tests are significantly more difficult than lecture examples. The practice tests are your best friends. Took attendance in my class. Gives group projects throughout the semester that are the hardest group projects I have ever done. Intimidating as a person and didn't make me feel welcome in her office hours. Overall mediocre experience.
She's awesome. Funny in class, easy to talk to, emails out help on homework problems. She mostly does examples in class, but they are similar to questions that will be on the test. All the examples helps you see many different situations, which is helpful. You absolutely should take her.
Very funny, makes the class fun. Does a lot of examples in class but kinda wish she would explain the overall concept a little more. Her tests are very straightforward, no surprises, but you do have to study and do the practice tests/ worksheets in order to do well. Definitely take her if you can.
She is the best teacher I've had yet at State. She is respectful, approachable and adds humor to each class. Her tests are clear-cut; she will let you know exactly what she wants you to know for each test. I went to her office hours 2/3 days a week and she was extremely helpful. I got 100 on all the webassigns, which helped me get the overall A
The best calculus teacher I've had. She is goofy and funny, but very much cares about her students. Her tests are very fair and reflect previous versions of her tests which are provided beforehand. Do some serious studying for a couple days in advance, come to class and do the homework and you're good. Only bad thing about the class is Maple!
Professor Kurtz is truly outstanding. She is incredibly easy to follow, and she posts notes, study guides, and practice tests online. Definitely an awesome choice.
Kurtz gives easy-to-follow lectures and walks through plenty of examples with the class. Participation isn't mandatory but if you miss less than 4 she replaces your lowest test w/ the final if it's better. Pushes back assignments often. Makes every lecture entertaining. Tests aren't easy but if you do the reviews she posts & study you'll be fine.
Overall, she is a great professor! Everything everyone else said was true, however at least for this semesters class, the tests were very difficult. Our test averages were around a 70, and they were only that high cause of all the really smart math majors in the the class. Also, she writes ridiculously fast, so make sure you keep up with notes.
Professor Kurtz makes it so easy for students to learn. She posts practice tests, practice problems, review sheets, and makes 15% of the grade online math homework. If you do the work and study the class is an easy GPA booster. At the same time, students have a strong mastery of the course material by the end of the course.
She reminds me of Pam Beasley from The Office in both appearance and personality -- not a bad thing. She is considerate of the fact that you probably do not remember much about differential equations from Calculus, so she has excellent review material. Regularly sends out homework help and accommodates your schedule by pushing back deadlines on hw.
I absolutely love Professor Kurtz. She is a phenomenal teacher and she made waking up for calculus every morning worth it. Although her tests are harder than other MA242 teachers, she prepares you well. If you are planning on taking more math courses after this I would highly recommend Kurtz because she will prepare you for those. She is funny too.
Dr. Kurtz genuinely cares about her students and is great at teaching concepts. Her tests can be very frustrating (one test we had was 7 questions for a 50 minute class) and her rubric is picky. Don't go into Calc III thinking it's going to be an easy class with Kurtz. You will understand the concepts at the end of the course though.
She is a very kind and funny person. Enjoyable to be taught by, however, after going to class every single day, I began to get very tired of seeing her. She gives A LOT of examples so sometimes it can get boring. Probably one of the better calculus teachers at NCSU.
The tests she gives are very different than the examples from lectures and from examples online. She never explained why you are using certain methods and what you goal is in the first place. She would just do example after example, and everything got jumbled together. This class is 3D visualization heavy for a math class.
Has a good sense of humor so class is actually tolerable and she explains things super well. She posts class notes online but you really need to go to class to understand the material. She makes her own tests and they are pretty fair to what you are learning. Posts practice tests and problems and is very willing to help during office hours.
Ms. Kurtz is definitely one of my favorite professors. She explains everything so well and never asked us anything on a test that wasn't covered thoroughly in class. The textbook isn't required, but doing the practice problems from the book before tests will make you much more prepared. I recommend you take her class!
She was a good professor, and the material was not too hard. However, her test length varied throughout the semester, sometimes it seemed like she made the tests longer just because she felt like it. I felt this was unfair, and it ended up screwing over my grade in the end.
Possibly the best teacher I had at NCSU. The best math teacher I've EVER had. Her tests are challenging, but made easy by being in class, doing the homework and her practice tests. The problems she works in class (in a very digestible and funny way) prepare you very well for the homeworks and tests. 10 out of 10, would be taught by again.
Definitely the best math teacher I've had at NC State. Her tests were on the long side, so there isn't much time for making mistakes. She is very engaged with the class and is very humorous. Towards the end of the semester she brought in candy to toss out. My only regret is not taking her for calc 1, 2, and 3 also.
I had her for 242 and 341. Humorous and engaging, and very clear when explaining material. The tests match her in class examples very closely. The homework was hard at times which was annoying, but worth doing to understand the material. I didn't get the textbook for either class - the practice tests are more than enough to be well prepared.
Tests are straightforward, lectures reflect test material pretty well. Appl Diff I was not as bad as I expected. Ended up with an A. She gives you some extra credit if you don't miss more than 3 classes. recommend!
the examples she posts are much harder than the ones on tests. unclear and very difficult although I have never had a problem with calc 2. never taking her again.
Textbook comes with Webassign so you have to get it. Amazing lectures: I rarely started out being confused by the material but after one or two lectures I got it down regardless (because of her amazing lectures). Gives extra credit, tests are straightforward, does webassign in lecture, approachable and funny, will be taking MA242/341 with her.
She is easily the best math teacher I've ever had. Her lectures are amazing and engaging. You can tell that she loves what she is teaching and is very funny. Pay attention in class and do the Webassigns and you will do well. Maple is still stupid but that's the Math Department not her.
The WebAssign assignments are way harder than her test examples (which she usually pulls from class notes and practice tests). Office hours are the best thing you can do here, but she is always willing to answer any question and help diagnose anything you're consistently missing or getting wrong which helps prevent future errors.
Great Prof.
Kurtz was a great professor and made calculus worth waking up for and I actually looked forward to going to class everyday. She does lots of examples and had office hours multiple days a week so its really hard not to understand the information eventually. The lectures can get tedious with all the examples but she makes the lectures lighthearted.
Mrs. Kurtz is the best professor I had this semester. She is excellent at explaining things and makes her lectures engaging. Her notes are easy to follow and she is always open to answering questions. Her tests are on the tougher and longer side, but if you pay attention in class, do all the homework, and take the practice tests, you'll be fine.
Excellent teacher. One of the best I've had at NC state. Gives lots of good explanations, and if you don't get something just ask her and she'll work until you do. There are lots of resources to prepare for tests, and if you use them, it's easily possible to Ace the tests. She reminds me of Pam from The Office
She's an alright teacher. Doesn't really tell you what's on the tests, so that sucks. A lot of people think she's an excellent teacher, but in reality, she's an average teacher who is quirky and looks like Pam, so people just like her more. I probably didn't spend enough time studying (start several days in advance), but there's fault on her part.
Took Calculus 3. Pretty hard but can attribute that to the class and not the teacher. She is very good at explaining clearly and is transparent in what she expects you to know. Class is really boring and I stopped taking notes three quarters of the way through.
Leslie Kurtz is a great professor who truly cares about students and whether they truly understand material rather than just lecturing at them. Webassign and Maple can be frustrating but she will give in class hints as well as holding tons of office hours every week. She gives you ample opportunity to succeed and if you try, an A is achievable.
Kurtz is a super caring and funny professor but the class is very test heavy. The tests are much more difficult compared the class examples and homework problems.
Leslie is the most amazing professor I have had at NCSU. I have taken all of my math classes with her. If you're struggling with homework she is always willing to help and will extend the due date if she doesn't respond in time.
She is so adorable and hilarious. She tries to keep everybody engaged in the topics. She is very understanding and willing to grant extensions on homework and Maple. Her class can get repetitive because it is always the same format to learn the material, lots of examples. Overall worth taking.
She is good, but the thing is she talks a lot of things completely unrelated to the coursework. I understand that for making it interesting or likable she might be doing it. Good person but a good teacher? questionable. One thing is very clear that her exams are not hard but the longest amongst all of the profs. So, it kinda cancels out.
Mrs. Kurtz is hands down the best math professor/teacher I have ever had in either high school or college. Her class is not inherently "easy" but if you take advantage of the resources she posts on her webpage, you will do well on the tests. Lectures are not boring and she is funny. Highly recommend.
Best teacher I've had at State so far. Notes were clear, she helped explained difficult Webassigns in class, extended maple when necessary, test were like what she taught. Excellent professor.
She is truly great at explaining the concepts. You will be expected to have a certain level of competency on the tests but they have been fair and are clearly on material that we were taught.
She was really nice and a great person. Her tests were a lot harder then hw and examples in class and usually had something that was not expected to be on there. A lot of people always seems caught off guard by her tests.
She's very kind, educated, and explains the material in a way which is clear. Lots of relevant examples used in class and has practice tests and resources before each exam. Also is available to help with Maple assignments. As with most math classes, all of the grading is through tests and homework.
If you have to take math, take Kurtz. Although the material is difficult, she makes it much easier to understand than other professors seemed to according to friends in other sections. Her tests were simple as long as you paid attention and they were always fair.
Lectures are awesome and often are carbon copies of homework and test questions. She's entertaining and I plan on taking her again. Her practice tests are very similar to the actual tests and she has extra worksheets if you have trouble on a subject.
Kurtz is really great, I had her for Calc 3 and Diff Eq and she was great for both! She really goes over the topics in class and gives plenty of examples to work outside of the class. Tests are hard, but she prepares you really well for them. There is a textbook but she made it optional if you want to do the practice problems from the book.
The tests are super hard and half the class is taught in recitation so if your recitation teacher isn't good you're kind of out of luck. She's a super nice lady just not a great teacher.
Her lectures were detailed, clear and organized. She made the book unnecessary. Her tests were on the material she went over in class and she provided many HW hints and optional extra problems on her website. The course was not easy, but the grading was fair and the course was well planned,
Best math professor in NC State University
Leslie Kurtz is really funny and nice, although the tests were pretty hard (especially for people who have a hard time finishing early/on time). It was an enjoyable way of learning/taking Calc 3 (a class I would not usually describe as enjoyable) except for time constraint on tests.
I am very happy with my experience with Professor Kurtz. I was skeptical about taking a difficult class online, but it was honestly no different than being in class. Video lectures are provided, several review lectures and practice tests are available, and she usually has a folder full of difficult homework problems that she works out and explain.
love kurtz
Kurtz is a good teacher and does a great job explaining in class, but her tests are really tough and graded harshly. She is super friendly and nice, but you have to put in a lot of work to get a decent grade.
her tests are very similar to the practice ones available. she is a very fair grader and gives lots of partial credit. my favorite professor at ncsu so far. funny and approachable. actually tests you on what she teaches. she has homework hints and makes the class very easy to understand.
Ms. Kurtz is a fantastic math professor. She makes you work for a good grade, but her tests are very fair and her teaching is second to none. She is very kind and her lectures are funny and entertaining while still being very informative. She and her TAs are always happy to help if you have questions. I'll definitely be taking her Diff EQs class.
Great, funny professor. Cares about her students. Her tests can be difficult, but she prepares you well for them, gives you practice tests, and all notes are online. I'll be taking her for Calc 3 and probably Diff Eq. as well, if possible. Note: Attendance is only mandatory to get your lowest test grade replaced by your final grade, if higher.
Dr. Kurtz was a very passionate professor, but her teaching style was not the best. The homework did not line up with exams, and the graders were incredibly nitpick throughout the semester. I think she is very reasonable about giving points back, but the TAs make or break the class. She was very nice and genuine, but not the best at teaching.
Mrs. Kurtz is an amazing math teacher and makes Calc II pretty easy. I would definitely take her if you can. Tests are kind of difficult because you have to study and work hard for a good grade on them. Homework is reasonable, but she has the TA's teach some of the material, so you better get a good one to do well. Love her!!
Leslie Kurtz is the medium between really great and really hard. Her lectures are amazing and shes super nice, but her tests are always much harder than you anticipate, but she does extra review and posts practice tests. Youll learn the material very well and get a good grade if you work for it.
she's a very good teacher, but she teaches it for REAL. if youve never taken calc2 before, you will struggle. She has great notes and is a good person but the exams are very difficult. I may or may not pass and wish i wouldve taken someone else. she also never emails back and you have to redeem points on every exam because grading is very harsh.
She is a very good teacher that teaches the material at a high level. You won't need to look at the textbook much to understand a topic as long as you pay attention in class. The only downfall of this class is that the tests are very difficult and time consuming. She gives you the material to get a good grade, but it's up to you to get a good grade
You want Kurtz.
Watch the lecture videos and work through her practice examples. No textbook needed. She is receptive to any questions and tells you what will and will not be on the test. If you can ace the practice test she gives you, you can ace the actual test. No surprises. And she can be a little funny in class too.
Kurtz was a great professor for calc 3. I found her lectures and notes to be very helpful and easy to understand. She is accessible outside of class if you can make it to her office hours, and TAs are very helpful as well. I liked that she posted solutions to some webassign problems, since they can be insanely hard.
Good attendance drops your lowest test grade. Homework is hard, but she works through most of the problems online or in class. Tests are not nearly as difficult as homework, and she gives a practice test. The content is difficult, yet she explains most of it well or will help you outside of class. If you get a good TA and Kurtz, you are golden.
Kurtz is very good at teaching the material. Her lectures are great overall. She falls short when designing her tests. She likes putting material that was covered for 5 minutes or less in class on her tests, while also not putting that material on the practice tests. Take physics alongside this class and you'll do fine since the material overlaps.
Kurtz is a great professor who thoroughly explains the material in lecture but sometimes goes overboard when writing tests. I took her for MA241 and MA242, and she likes to put questions on tests about topics that were not emphasized much in lecture compared to other material. Overall I recommend taking her as you will learn a lot.
Took online over the summer- best decision ever. All the lectures were filmed which makes it easy to take a math course online. Did the homework problems and practice tests and aced all the tests. Very clear on what you need to know and what you don't in the videos. Do the examples from in class, don't get behind, and you're set. helpful via email.
Ms. Kurtz is an absolutely wonderful professor who has a real knack for teaching. She is really good at conveying some pretty difficult concepts, that I otherwise might not have understood with another professor. While she is an excellent teacher, her tests, especially the final, are fairly tricky, but otherwise, excellent teacher.
Dr. Kurtz had a lot of resources for her online class, including lecture videos, study guides, worksheets, and practice tests. I would rely on these resources more than the HW to study, because the HW doesn't always reflect what she teachers very well. Tests are fair, but she is a tough grader so making a small mistake will cost you.
Kurtz is an excellent lecturer. She explains the material well. Her tests are extremely demanding however, and are several orders of magnitude more difficult than other professors. They tend to test obscure topics barely covered during the lectures. I personally wouldn't take her again. Her lectures weren't worth the hit to my GPA.
Best math teacher I've ever had. She explains everything really well in class and is also helpful during office hours. TA sometimes teaches topics that are too hard in recitation, but Kurtz always clarifies things in lecture. Biggest complaint would be her tests can be a little tough, but if you study enough you should be fine. Taking her for MA242
Dr. Kurtz is my favorite professor in the Math department! I had her for Calculus 2 and 3. She is just so great at making concepts easy to understand. Her notes and examples teach you everything you need to know to do well in her class. Dr. Kurtz is always willing to help you during and after class if you do not understand something as well.
If you can take her, take her. She really cares about her students and will give you every resource you need. A gem!
Leslie Kurtz is probably my favorite teacher at State so far. She is enjoyable to talk to, laid back and understanding. Her style of lecturing is unmatched and makes the material much easier. Definitely take her if you can, you will not regret it.
I love Ms. Kurtz! I had her for 241 & 242 and really enjoy how understanding she is outside of class. Her class is test and homework heavy, but with COVID, her class was very manageable online with notes and her website. I WOULD NOT suggest the honors section unless you're great at math, because it was harder after taking her regular section of 241
Kurtz is truly a gem! She will teach the material in a way you can understand it, he tests are fair, and I truly enjoyed her lectures. She is a very caring person and works hard for her students. If you can take here, you should take her, absolute no brainer
I loved Professor Kurtz! She moves through the material quickly, but she goes over so many examples that you can always go back and reference them later if you don't process the information in class. She has homework hints for hard problems and lecture recordings on her website. You don't need the book because she tells you what you need to know.
One of the best profs at NCSU. Lectures and clear and concise. Very accessible outside of class. Goes the extra mile to help students succeed. Her reputation as a great prof is certainly well-earned. Even you don't have her class, her website has her very helpful notes for calcs 1, 2 and 3 as well as diff eq. Take her class if you can!
She made diffeq one of my favorite if not the favorite math class I've ever taken. People have told me differential equations can be a hard subject, but I think thanks to Professor Kurtz I understood everything fairly quickly. I took the entire class in an online format watching her videos, but I'm sure she's great in person as well.
Awesome professor! I took MA 341 online and was very impressed with how she was able to quickly cover a lot of material and explain it well. Also, she is kind and patient when people need help understanding concepts.
Kurtz is my all-time favorite professor so far. She is a great lecturer, and funny too. She can dumb down any concept so that even the craziest parts of calc 3 are understandable. She also does a lot of examples and is very accessible and open to help. If you do the homework and attend office hours when you need help, you'll get an A, no problem.
I'm sure in a regular semester Dr. Kurtz would be fine. However, she is an absolute mess at online learning. She is impossible to reach, taking months at best to respond to emails that need answers in a few days. She turned recitations into lectures, so we had 5 lectures per week. Sent more emails about her hiking trips than about the class itself.
Dr. Kurtz was my favorite professor this semester. She's super kind and always willing to answer questions. If you have the opportunity, PLEASE take her! She is super fair with tests, and you always know what's going to be on them. She also discusses test dates and such with her students, so she really listens to you.
Professor Kurtz is a great teacher, really helpful, understanding, and fair. If you have the option, she is your best bet for all Calculus classes at NC State.
Kurtz is an excellent professor and should be your go-to for any math class she teaches. To the point and explains each concept clearly and carefully, and provides extra tips and tricks, which allows students to complete the difficult WebAssign assignments. Exams are fair, but be careful! The class is very exam heavy in grading. Anyways, take her!
This was a tough class, I thought it was harder than the previous calc. However, the lectures were very helpful, the tests were manageable, and I learned a lot. Easily the best math teacher I've ever had.
Professor Kurtz is AMAZING! Her lectures (in person) are fun and engaging, and she does her best to make sure everyone is understanding the material. She's super accessible and provided excellent help during her office hours. Tests are hard but doable. She's also very easy to talk to and not intimidating at all, especially when asking for help.
Leslie Kurtz is a saint. She is the best professor that I have had, and was amazing when it came to realizing when she could help students out. Also, she has amazing lectures.
Dr. Kurtz is absolutely phenomenal. Her lectures are amazingly clear and concise. I was not in her 050-H section, but she still took the time to meet with me and talk to me one-on-one about my concerns about my lack of ability at math. She's the only reason I didn't drop out of college this semester and I am so grateful she was there for me.
What an awesome teacher. Definitely take any of her math classes if you can. I was never able to take one with her in person, but her lectures are absolutely legendary and get you up to speed even if you're not in her section. Absolute GOAT.
Great professor. Goes out of her way to help and talk to her students and gives amazing lectures. Tests are fair and you know what to expect when you take them. Good focus on learning the material.
Dr. Kurtz was recommended to me by many upperclassmen, and I am so glad I took their advice. Dr. Kurtz is very attentive, answers questions constantly, and occasionally gives test hints. She does give quite a bit of homework, but she is always open to help, and genuinely wants you to succeed. 11/10 recommend.
She is no doubt the best math prof I've ever had. Tests are a bit hard but similar to practice tests. Go to her office hours after getting a test back to make sure it's graded well cuz there seems to be miscommunication between her and the TAs. 10/10 recommend
Kurtz is an awesome Calculus 2 professor. She goes into great detail in every unit. Just show up to class, take notes, give the webassigns your best shot, and try your hardest and you'll do just fine. One of her TAs were quite questionable, sadly, but that's not her fault.
Dr. Kurtz is absolutely phenomenal. She gives awesome, easy to follow lectures. She does assign a lot of homework on WebAssign but she is super understanding about giving extensions and if you do the work, the material will make sense eventually. The tests are hard, but she is super great about telling you exactly what to study. 15/10 recommend.
Kurtz is a really nice person and cares for her students. She is fair with her tests, they were usually easier than the WebAssign homework. She is organized and communicates well, so you know what is expected from tests. Attendance is mandatory, but you can choose to watch online recordings or go in-person. She is really good at Lectures too.
Dr. Kurtz gives really engaging lectures and is very direct on how her material will be graded on the test. I feel she offers a lot of resources outside of class to those who might be having trouble with the material. I feel the way her tests are graded is fair. She has a good sense of humor and is probably my favorite professor this semester.
Ms. Kurtz is just incredible. She is engaging, hilarious, wholesome, and beyond fair in the way she runs her class. Her excitement about the smallest things in math and slight awkwardness are lovely. Most of lecture is just a ton of examples on how to do each problem. Follow examples, do the homework/studyguides and you're set up for an A.
I took both Diff EQ and Calc 3 with Dr. Kurts and she is one of the best teachers at NC State! Not only are her lectures super clear and give a methodical approach to solve problems, but she gives tons of optional practice similar to how she would test you. She has class worksheets for most topics with notes on how to get each part of a problem.
Professor Kurtz is very understanding and does a great job of teaching the material. She is very clear about what will be on the test and provides lots of resources to help you prepare for the tests. She is funny and is very understanding with homework extensions and such. Overall great professor that wants to see you succeed.
Dr. Kurtz is a great professor and MA 241 in your first semester of college can be tough. She is pretty considerate in grading and drops your lowest exam score. If you put some time into studying, you can get an A or B. I enjoyed her teaching :)
Great professor with good lectures that explain the concept well. Unfortunately, the WebAssign homework is not managed by her but really by the Math department which she has no control over. Overall, she is great at explaining concepts and is extremely helpful during office hours. Tests ARE tough, however. If you put in the work, you will be okay.
Professor Kurtz is extremely caring, hilarious, quirky, and a fantastic math professor. She makes it clear what her criteria is for tests, provides homework hints for difficult webassigns, and great study guides for tests. For her honors section, you will have group projects, but other than that tests are reasonable given in class examples.
Ms. Kurtz did a decent job explaining the mathematical concepts during her lectures. The homework assignments and tests were challenging. I got a D in the class but I had to retake it to get into my engineering program. I understood the material but I did not have enough time to study the fine details since I struggled with other classes.
I went through all of HS math, as well as Calc 1 and 2 at State and struggled so hard to understand anything, until this class. I got a 94 on the first exam, which is incredible for me. Kurtz is amazing at explaining everything, the TAs are incredible, and the tests are written so fairly. If you miss class, you can watch the recording w no penalty.
Kurtz is awesome, she gives many helpful examples for all the subjects, and if you're confused there are many office hours to get help. Her lectures are amazing and their recorded
Leslie Kurtz is the love of my life. She is an amazing professor with engaging lectures. I feel she is really clear about what she expects from her students and is really fair. Though you can access her courses online I would recommend going in person, you will get much more out of it. Go to her test review sessions!! They are really helpful!!
Math is hard. It can get frustrating to take a never ending string of calculus and differentials. But with Kurtz, it not only becomes bearable, it becomes enjoyable. She is an amazing teacher, who is compassionate and obviously cares for her students, and has great lectures and fair tests. If you want a good NCSU math experience, take Kurtz.
Genuinely one of the best professors I have ever had. She is funny and somehow made learning differential equations easy. She is available outside of class, makes it very clear what will be on tests, and hosts review sessions. Could not recommend more.
I. Love. Leslie. Kurtz. I am legitimately sad that the semester is ending and I cant keep learning math from her, she is so cool and nice and makes class a really fun time. She is very clear about what tests will cover and gives help for the homework. One of the best teachers I've ever had she is a math goddess
Professor Kurtz is the best professor I have had at NC State. Her lectures are easy to follow, homeworks were hard but she offers a lot of homework help through recitation and office hours. Kurtz is very accomodating and truly cares for her students. You'll not only love her as a teacher but as a person.
Leslie Kurtz. is. an. angel. The WebAssign homeworks are hard, but the tests are more reflective of the lectures and the review sessions which are not too bad. She wants the best for all of her students and is a really engaging lecturer. If you have the opportunity to take Kurtz for ANY math class - DO IT. She is the best.
She is amazing. I have taken her for Calc 2&3 and am taking her for Diff Eq. She gives good lectures that are easy to understand. She provides HW hints to help you understand difficult webassign questions. Gives some extra credit throughout the semester and is very understanding. Tests are exactly like the practice tests, so you know what to expect
Take Kurtz. Lectures are unbelievably engaging, she is super caring, and overall the class is just a fantastic vibe. It's not a pushover class either, though. You actually learn, and you enjoy doing so. She makes content digestible for everybody and her tests are extremely fair.
Ms. Kurtz gave really good lectures and also did review sessions before tests. Tests are similar to practice tests & she usually gives hints in review sessions to what will be on the tests. DE section gets slightly more time on tests, although time still killed my grade. She gave some extra credit for doing some random fun things. 2-3 HWs per week.
Leslie Kurtz makes really helpful worksheets on different topics. She makes practice tests that will ensure you get a good grade on the actual exam, and also posts homework hints that aid when homework is tricky. Overall she is one of the bezt professors I have ever had and has such a fun, slightly cute awkward energy in the classroom.
i loved professor kurtz. her tests were reasonable because she takes them before she gives them. attendance isn't mandatory, but if you only miss three days she'll drop your lowest test grade. if you aren't honors/math major, try to get into her section anyways because there's usually open seats.
Prof Kurtz is the literal best, she made Calc 2 soo easy & enjoyable I'm def taking her for Calc 3 and whatever other courses she teaches, I'd say do whatever you can to get into her section you won't regret it, 4 tests make 55% of grade and 30% final, replaces lowest test score w final score if
Awesome professor! Exams were very fair and similar to problems done in class or on homework. Exam notecards given for certain long-winded memorization topics. Very available when I needed help. Take her! Only complaint is that some of the homework (webwork) was made extremely poorly so an equivalent answer would not count as right when it should.
Professor Kurtz understands that you have other classes and can make deadlines flexible. Her lectures are fantastic and she provides plenty of extra material in case you do not understand certain topics or homework. Take her if you can
Best professor at State! She's such an angel, and she knows what she's doing. I love how she had many opportunities to engage in extra material, and she still understood that we were busy students and gave us optional recitation days to utilize if necessary. Taking her again for MA 242, and hopefully for more classes in the future!
Professor Kurtz is regarded by many as the best professor at NCSU. What holds her back from that in my opinion is her accessibility via email, which may as well be non-existent. If you need her, speak to her before/after lecture and in office hours. Apart from that, incredible professor. Reminds me of great high school teachers in terms of caring.
love her, she's the best at teaching calc and I'd recommend her for any possible class. grade's mostly tests, a final and hw but she has these cute lil extra credit opps so it's not too bad. lectures are great and frankly entertaining, she has a v fun vibe and appealing sense of humor that I love. she's always open to questions, no matter how silly
The sweetest and most helpful professor at State
Take her class
I took Calc 3 with her. It is a very hard class. I hated this class with such a passion. The material was terrible and I was so confused. Kurtz was an amazing professor. She had plenty of resources and is the only reason why I passed this class.
Hands down the best math professor at NCSU. Her teaching is an artform. DiffEq is a hard class, but she makes it very easy. Test are fair, as the practice tests are truly reflective of test material. If you take DiffEq with her, you are guaranteed a B- at the minimum as long as you put forth the required effort. She's truly the best of the best.
Great professor. She may be the best professor in the department. If you can take her then take her. If you pay attention you will be fine.
don't even need to read reviews just take her. best ever, course covers a wide range of topics but she makes it as easy as possible for us. extra credit for hw and you get unlimited attempts on most medium to hard hw q's. throws candy at you for answers :p super sweet and caring and great teaching style, fav professor of all time
Good teacher overall, just goes very quickly. The tests are very difficult and a very heavy portion of your grade.
Kurtz's classes are reserved for a reason! Even though she is a great professor, the class goes by so far and I'd only recommend if you are really good at math. There is lots of assistance offered if you aren't but its challenging
Very kind professor and genuinely cares for student's wellbeing. Lots of course material so take advantage of her many study resources on her website, but tests are fair. Lectures move fast, so always pay attention. Always go to class too. Accessible outside of class.
Professor Kurtz was awesome! I loved having her as a teacher, she did a great job at connecting with her students and made me excited for calculus (a large feat). She is kind, funny, and very prepared and capable for her career.
Very nice professor? Very caring and had lots of extra practice
She did a great job with lectures and hosted lots of help for the homework if you're struggling. Great teacher.
Best math professor I have taken. She makes it VERY clear what will or won't be on tests so as long as you study what she says you will be fine. Her tests are not necessarily easy, but as long as you put time into studying you should get an A. I did not miss a single lecture because her class was so fun.
Kurtz is a great professor with incredible notes and class structure, however she never answered a single email I sent this semester. She is hard to reach outside of class, at least in the online section. Her tests are fair and very much like the practice ones she gives out. If you stay on top of your work you will be fine.
10/10, she's so sweet and knows how to teach well.
Amazing prof that knows her stuff well. I failed the first test because I didn't prep properly but ended up acing the last three after talking with her and understanding how she teaches (go to all review sessions). I used her attendance policy to count my final grade over my failed test and learned the content well. Also funny and entertaining.
Ms. Kurtz is a great lecturer! She clearly cares about all her students. Although the concepts will require some work on your end, she provides great foundations for every concept and makes them easy to understand in every lecture. The practice exams closely align to the actual exams which is very helpful. Would highly recommend her!
She lectures in an engaging way and is always open to questions. I have taken her MA 242 and 341 and would recommend her to anyone. The class is hard, but her grading criteria is clear and she is a very fair grader.
Really just an awesome professor that makes some tricky concepts easily digestable and doesn't go too too hard. Provides plenty of resources to aid studying and test prep. Just don't take a laptop out during class because she will turn on you, hahaha.
Kurtz is a great professor who cares about her students. The concepts require work, but she provides solid foundations and makes them easy to understand. I found Unstuck AI helpful for test prep alongside the practice exams.
Easily the best expositor of mathematics known to mankind
Taking a math class with Professor Kurtz is one of the best things at NCSU. She is kind, funny, and a genuine person with a deep care for her students. She shows all of her students respect and is great to talk to outside of class. I wish every class could be a Kurtz's class!!! Enough good things cannot be said about Kurtz. A true blessing to NCSU.
Ok honestly, she was a solid lecturer. however, she had her TA lecture during recitation, and the TA really could not explain things well so going back to actual lecture and picking up where the TA left off confused so many people. Additionally, Kurtz DOES NOT respond to emails and her tests aren't the most fair
Dr. Kurtz is a good prof in the sense that she gives lots of examples of material covered on the test. The bad side to this is that she doesnt allow calculators of any kind or any type of cheat sheet for tests. You have to memorize a page of equations for the final and hope you can remember them all. She also writes incredibly fast.
Ms. Kurtz effectively taught things and made concepts clear. I really enjoyed how she made it very clear what was going to be on the exam, a lot of professors don't do that. You do get very few absences if you want the grade replacement so be careful about that. Would recommend.
Really good professor. Test are very similar to the notes and practice test. She does do a exam replacement if you have less than 4 absences in the class. The final is definitely the hardest part of the class, so make sure you study a lot for the test. The class is just very difficult.
Ms. Kurtz was my favorite math teacher I have ever had. She is extremely good at teaching, she put so much effort into teaching us the content, while also taking time out of her weekends to do test review sessions before every test which were super useful. I can't say enough good things about Kurtz, she is absolutely amazing, I highly recommend her
Professor Kurtz is an amazing professor who cares about her students, but her classes suffer from being graded by only a few tests with a rather short turn around between each test, so keep that in mind. She is funny and makes lectures enjoyable, and the tests are straightforward if you practice for them.
Kurtz is very engaging during lectures and I enjoyed her class a lot. Tests are similar to practice tests and relatively straightforward. She does review sessions outside of class and they are very helpful for preparing for the test. She replaces the lowest exam grade with the final if you miss no more than 4 classes.
By far the best math teacher I have had so far. Tests can be a little tough but they are very similar to the practices and problems done in class. Would definitely recommend if you have the opportunity to take her.
Kurtz is such an amazing professor. Took this online, but the lectures were easy to follow and the homework problems were similar to those in the lectures. Concepts seem tricky, but she makes them easy to understand. The tests were pretty easy as long as you do the practice tests and additional problems on her website. Highly recommend taking her.
She gave very clear lectures and wrote down all her notes by hand for each section--this is dedication! She was friendly & personable, and though I never went to office hours, my friends tell me they had good experiences with her there.
Relevant homework and explains the material well. No curveballs on the test, take Kurtz if you can get a seat.
Very funny, lectures are always engaging. Tests weren't bad, and the topics on them were either mentioned beforehand or extremely similar to the practice tests
Best teacher at the school. Calc 2 is challenging and time-consuming, but she gives extensive and detailed preparation for tests even in H. H gets projects, but they're not too bad. She will help you whenever you need it but doesn't answer emails. She also has a great website to practice for tests and explain her lectures again. Overall, loved it.
Incredible lecturer. Made class easy to understand and helped a lot to mitigate the otherwise awful HW (which is out of her hands). Really can't emphasize how good she is at teaching, and super friendly and nice to boot. Only issue is that attendance is way too stringent, 4 absences for class that meets 5 days a week isn't nearly enough.
Most likely the best math professor at NC State. If I could get in her class for anything I would try to. She explains the topics very well and her tests are extremely fair. If you put in the effort you will do great in the class. Her lectures are also entertaining and she has a pretty good sense of humor.
Kurtz really lived up to all the rate my prof reviews. She was sweet, funny, and kind. She knew exactly how to break down hard topics into easy and digestible chunks. She kept on pace with the syllabus, the tests were exactly what she said they would be (and were easy), and she and her TA were very lenient with grading. Take her if you can!
Best professor you can take. Good lectures and actually cares about the students and has lots of office hours and does review sessions and makes sure you are ready for the tests and they. are very easy and similar to the questions done it class. Take her she's an angel sent from heaven to help you pass these hell courses.
For all purposes of education, Kurtz is easily the best calculus teacher to grace the earth - also straight up just a cool person
Ms. Kurtz is the best! Made differential equations as simple and painless as it could be. Genuinely cares about her students' wellbeing and success. Good amount of homework, but she provides lots of homework help and solutions. 10/10 experience honestly
Great professor. Gives you enough material to succeed. Tests are still challenging so make sure you study.
Dr. Kurtz is one of the best professors I have ever had. I had her for calc 2, calc 3, and differential equations. I cannot recommend her enough. Her notes are thorough and easy to understand, she provides so many practice problems and beautiful practice exams that are the exact same format as her actual exams.
THE HYPE IS SO REAL. TAKE HER!! Literally everything about this woman is perfect. She has the cutest humor, outfits always serving, and she's so sweet and SMART!!! All this woman needs is printer paper, a marker, and a dream and she will literally teach you Calculus like it's nothing and gives the clearest explanations ever. And great notes/website
she has high expectations but nothing you cant accomplish if you dont work for it. she worked with me on giving extensions for homeworks i missed. 100% would take her again, shes an awesome teacher
She does a great job at explaining everything that you will go over throughout the semester!! I would recommend her to anyone having to take MA141 as she made this class go by without stress.
I wish Ms. Kurtz would teach every class at State. She's literally the kindest, funniest and most charismatic teacher ever. Her explanations for problems are clear and thorough, and she always answers questions. The best part was that she always gave straightforward test problems and review sessions were helpful. The glazing is well deserved, trust
One of the best lecturers I have ever seen, also really transparent in course work. Class itself is quite easy especially if you have had linear algebra experience. Beware second half of the course has a difficulty spike. In terms of difficulty Systems >>>>> normal ODE's. She lives up to the legends.
She is very good at making Calculus 3 easy to understand. Her tests are not very difficult and TA's are usually very lenient with partial credit. Just a warning if you take her. The final exam is significantly more difficult than her midterm exams and it is worth 30% of the grade. Other than that, great professor.
Good office hours and does a lot of example problems. Overall, I think she is a great teacher.
this place would be perfect if Kurtz were chancellor, she's probably perfected calculus pedagogy
I love Leslie Kurtz with my whole heart. I went from MA141 with Medvinsky to this saint of a human. I honestly think she should run the whole calculus department. Incredible lecturer, sweet as anything, and knows what she's talking about. Try your best to get her because it'll be the best decision you ever make.
I first had her in MA241 during my freshman year and immediately made it my goal to take the rest of my math courses with her and I did. What I admire most is her willingness to hold optional Zoom review sessions outside of class, even on weekends or evenings, to prepare us for exams. This truly reflects her dedication and care for her students.
I would jump in front of a bus for her she is the best professor to ever grace the earth
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She makes time for students, even on weekends, by holding Zoom sessions to prepare us for the tests. The material is challenging, but in every class, she actually works through the problem on the screen so everyone can see it step by step. She makes lectures fun by cracking jokes and is quite funny.
Kurtz is by far my favorite professor I've had here at NCSU, I was fortunate to be able to have her for calc 2 and 3. Unlike many professors, she genuinely seems to care about her students, ESPECIALLY compared to other professors within the math department. Her lectures are really enjoyable due to her wonderful personality!
Dr. Kurtz is amazing. I would suggest taking her class. However, Calc 3 is a course with a lot of topics packed into one semester. While she is clear on what she expects on exams, she doesn't allow for formula sheets, including the final, unlike other Calc 3 professors who do allow formula sheets (unless you take her over summer).
engineers beware. shes super nice, but theres 5 hours of mandatory lecture a week, and she admitted half the homework is useless. she goes incredibly in depth on topics and writes super fast. unless you're a math major Kurtz is overkill. find another professor who lets you have cheat sheets, or gives out similar practice exams.
3 midterms and a final, with lots of homework in between, but the tests were made fairly and with lots of coursework/review material given in advance to help. Would recommend.
Kurtz is one of the best professors I've had at NC State. Each of the three tests comes with a thorough study guide and a practice exam, and the final is a well-balanced mix of the previous material. As long as I put in the effort to work through her examples, it felt almost impossible to do poorly. Highly recommend.
Everybody loves Ms. Kurtz!! Really fun to watch her deal with annoying people. Read one chapter ahead in the textbook and you'll be rewarded greatly - her lectures are somewhat conceptual so it will help you. Try not to get COMPLETELY confused and it'll be fine.
Professor Kurtz is the absolute best professor at NC State! She genuinely cares so much about all of her students. Calc 2 is just an incredibly hard math class in general, but she does an amazing job at providing so many example problems and practice tests, which are very similar to the actual tests. Can't say enough great things about her!
If you have to take calc 3 I highly recommend taking it with Dr. Kurtz. Not only is she a fantastic teacher, she is also very understanding and her practice tests are very very similar to the actual tests. She's also very kind. Again, I can't emphasize this enough, take calc 3 with her if you're able to.
Prof. Kurtz is great! She is an incredible teacher! Her lectures move kind of fast, but they are still easy to understand. The recitations are basically lectures, except the TA teaches, so if you don't have a good TA it kinda sucks, but all the notes and example problems are on Moodle. Definitely take her if you have the chance!
