The subject matter is really hard but its so interesting...he's really clear
very arrogant, not helpful. If you take this class, get to know your TA's
Extremely hard to follow, and not helpful at all.
Lectures are poorly organized and very unclear making the class very difficult
very unclear which makes it difficult to understand the material
Material is difficult, but he makes TA's readily available. Effective lecturer
Grades test using a curve, i.e. B=60. Gives most of the class a "C" course grade
Psych majors..if you aren't familiar with BIO or sciences DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
tough class, just gotta pay attention. GO to the REVIEW SESSIONS!
the class was hard but interesting...lectures can be confusing...go to reviews
VERY HARD - but very nice guy and funny - go to class
No Comments
difficule and speaks very fast; interesting
Does best to help class, extra credit, prepare for tests and you will do well.
Worst class ever!!! Sooo hard, nething is better than this class!
arrogant, rude, extremely unhelpful, very unclear lectures. AWFUL CLASS!!!!!!
most arrogant man i have ever met. the TA's deserve the salary
interesting but challenging, xtra credit everywhere but gotta go to it all- TAs!
funny/smart, but kind of a jerk. the kind of prof you'd drink beers with
print lecture notes for quizzes ,arrogant but we'd love to meet him for a beer
i affectionatly call this class "intro to hell: catalysts for college suicides"
if you've never taken biochemistry don't even bother, horrible lectures
veryhardclass&material, but GREAT teacher, not arrogant, he just knows his sh*t
Kind of confusing at times, but TAs really help. GO TO EVERY REVIEW SESSION!!

Hard material taught by an annoying egomaniac. Only class I ever withdrew from!
hard class, arrogant teacher...dont take it if you dont have to
Very hard class!! Go to Review Sessionswith TA -natalie is awesome, very helpful
do not ever take this class, hardest class i've ever taken DON'T TAKE THISCLASS
hardest class of my life, not impossible, but go to the reviews, class and STUDY
Very difficult course. His lectures are often vague and don't follow text at al
1 of my fav. classes @UD, but HARD;do the work and you'll pass and learn a lot
very hard class, teacher great and interesting STUDY! n you'll be fine
Horribly difficult. Please don't take this if you don't need it!!
arrogant and cocky, need i say more??
great professor, knows brain stuff backwards &forwards-TA's help alot
I would rather feast on a dead llama then take this class again
Hard course-but study and you'll be fine- skeen is very entertaining...but Ta's
Only class I had to study for at UD. Very hard, but Skeen knows every cell in the brain by name, and you will to.
Hard material w/ tests to match, STUDY and you'll be fine
HARD!!!! need i say more??
sadistic and irritable. he expects us to know the material beforehand so throughly that lecture would be completely unneccesary. he consistently makes implication about how stupid and lazy we are. ineffective teacher.
arrogant, cocky, slightly crazy man who is prob also the most intelligent teacher at UD-as much as i hated him i learned more in this class than all my others put together
Brilliant teacher!! Extremely difficult class, study very hard, go to review sessions and do all the readings. Worth taking the class if you are looking to learn something...Not good on GPA
You will get out what you put into the class. Interesting (HARD) class, learned a lot, great teacher, listen, ask ???'s, go to review session, ask ???'s, read book.
I can see why some think he is cocky but he is not really. Helpful if you tell him your coming to office hours. A lot of info on LAST exam. Memorize slides (completely) , look at practice test questions, and ask TA what parts of book to actually read.
He is really confusing in class, but study the slides/notes and you'll be fine. The TAs help so much in review sessions. He is really cocky, but I learned alot.
If you're all about value and learning something no one else can teach, take this guy. If you just want to get thru college, don't even set a foot thru his door, because he will chop it off!
Hard course, but really interesting. Prof tries to make analogies that all can understand to clarify. Read b4 class, it really helps. Great sense of humor, keeps things interesting.
Skeen is a very smart man. He loves psychology. I learned more in this class than n/e other. I also did massive amounts of work too. GOOD LUCK.

absolutely horrible teacher, would not help me when I seeked it because he felt he was above me, treated students like dirt and I felt I was way inferior, horrible tests, impossible class
Definitely a challenging class, to say the least. He is very helpful and willing to work with you. Lots of work but you learn so much. He's also entertaining.
One of the most interesting and intelligent profs I've had. He comes off as cocky in class but he's a different person one on one. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU DONT WANT TO WORK!!!!!
hes very cockey, but i learned more in this class then in my total college carear. be prepared to work and you'll be fine. Don't take this class if you don't want to put any effort in.
Biggest jerk you'll ever have to deal with. He intentionally makes things harder than they have to be. Dont take him if you dont have to and save yourself a lot of anger and stress.
Once you wade through half of what he says in class and just pay careful attention to the book, you'll be fine. He loves essay test questions where you need to explain a LOT of things to get all the points for it. Don't take him if easily intimidated.
I cant say enough terrible things about this man,he is an arrogant $%# who prides himself on making his students life hell.Tests are impossible and he doesnt teach anything, the only reason i learned a thing is bc i taught myself.DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Don't ever take this class! He is too smart for his own good.

Absolute horrible man, his tests are impossible, his lectures are confusing, he wants you to fail, the extra credit questions he gives are difficult, do not take this class unless you have to, you will do an incredible amount of work
do not take this class. amount studying does not mean you will get a good grade. exams are unclear, he says annoying phrases in class like "can you dig it." he thinks everyone is below him and is too smart to teach!!! worst class ever... DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS....EVER.
this is def. the hardest class i have ever taken!!! It was also the most interesting class and he is the smartest person i know, so DO NOT take it if ur not ready to work!!!
Now I will not get into grad school, only F I ever received in my life :(
Obnoxious, he admittedly makes his first test next to impossible to eliminate people.
MAKES ME CRY EVERY DAY AND NIGHT :(
Ridiculously hard! You thought brain and behavior was hard? Yeah...try learning the same material with a professor who doesn't make sense and a TEXT book that is meant for MEDICAL STUDENTS!!
Great professor, learned the most in any class I've ever taken; wants students to do well, gives hints to the exam questions, if you tend to zone out don't take this class because you are constantly taking notes, makes the slides available before class, nothing is unexpected.
This guy taught @ Duke Med & is probably the smartest person I've ever met. The 1st test is hard to weed people out.Show up to class, read the powerpoints he sends you,do the study guides & you'll be fine. He tells you what will be on the exams you just have to find the answers!! He wants you to ace
I have never felt so stupid in my life. Professor has extremely high expectations. Gets off on tricking students and making them sweat. If you must, take the Honors section, the extra presentation was the highlight of the whole class and it REALLY HELPS YOUR GRADE! Otherwise, change majors
Gives you a lot of opportunities for extra points, study hard and take the class seriously, he's a nice guy
No Comments
this is the hardest class that you'll ever take. he's amusing, but not very clear. be prepared to work
No Comments
Great guy, hard class. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, but still be prepared to work your butt off!
the class is extremely hard so be prepared to spend all your free time devoted to it. overall thoguh you will learn alot. skeen isnt as bad as everyone says he is. i actually really liked the guy
he's a giant brain that has somehow taken the form of a human being. he's not mean or anything, he's just smarter than anyone else. don't take this, it is a deathwish
You learn an extreme amount, feeling smarter after the course is done. However, you must be willing to put forth more effort than you have before for classes. He is disorganized so you have to do a lot of figuring out on your own so you must be independent. Study the powerpoints before class for the extra credit quizzes!
I am currently a TA for Dr. Skeen. Taking this class and getting an A has completely changed my life. I have decided that I have a love of Neuroscience and I want to become a Psychiatrist. Dr. Skeens class is a gift to his students if they chose to consider it one.
Was completely terrified of this class and Skeen before I took it. I ended up with an A, my only A of the semester. I feel so much smarter after taking this class. He was definatly not as bad as everyone says he is and does everything he can to raise grades. You do have to work hard, but it's not that bad if you see your TA and STUDY!
I absolutely loved this class. I definitely worked my butt off the entire semester and you can't slack off even for a moment, but I did end up with an A. What you will take away from this class afterward is well worth it. Dr. Skeen is one of the most intelligent people I have ever meant. It is a lot of work, but it is not impossible to do well.
I became a TA for this class after taking it. Luckily I took it over the summer so I could focus a lot of energy on doing well before and after class. You will have to work hard to do well -- but your efforts will pay off tremendously. Skeen is hysterical sometimes too -- and a bit crazy. I think he has some PTSD from his days in the service -- so watch out if he starts talking about fox holes and grenades.
ummm this is the hardest class ever. i think he is easier some semesters bc people who say he is not as bad as others think are crazy. study all you want it wont make a difference on the exam.
I think he is great- his class is definately hard- I probably worked harder for that class than at any other class in Delaware- but I learned a lot in one semester- he's tough because he is so smart but he is willing to answer any questions
I took this class my sophomore year (4 years ago), and loved it. I ended up being a TA for 5 semesters afterwards. I know he can be a little tough to follow sometimes, but he really is an awesome professor. For those of you having difficulty in the class, GO TO YOUR TA's. That's what they're there for! and take advantage of the EC opportunities (i.e. review sessions). you'd be surprised what a difference they make in your final grade!
I thought that this class was ridiculous, I didn't get a bad grade but with the number of TAs that he has, you would think we would know how much extra credit we have before the test and you can't even see the exams after you take it. He made very little sense when he talked, and I guess he thought this was the only class we were taking.
The course itself is not bad, it's just the fact that Dr. Skeen is a horrible professor. In fact, I'd go as far to say that he's a horrible human being. Take the class if you're really interested in the subject. If not avoid it and Skeen at all costs. Can ya dig it?
Just so people realize...you can look at your exams in his office to see what you did wrong. He will explain what you did wrong and what he is looking for so you may inprove. I guess not everyone listens in class when he mentions this a hundred times. And then people wonder why they don't do well in such a challenging class...hmmm...
don't take this class if u just want to tell ppl you're taking neuroscience. skeen is the smartest man i've ever met. the material is hard so you have to work succeed. sometimes you'll feel like he thinks this is your only class but do the readings ON TIME & study b4 the review session and you'll have no problem. you can get an A, but u have 2 work
This is definitely a hard class, but NOT impossible to get an A. Tons of extra credit. If you take this class, you will learn more cool stuff than you ever though it was possible to learn. Skeen is a really funny, helpful guy who cares about his students. Take this class, but STUDY HARD from the very first day.
Hardest class i have ever taken. Tests are all essay and cover A LOT of material. However, Skeen does everything he can to see that students pass this class and don't have to take it again. This class will take up a lot of your time so be sure you are ready for it. not a terrible idea to take as auditor then for a grade. STUDY HARD!!
This class is extremely difficult but you will learn a lot. Do the extra credit, go to the study sessions, and talk with the TA (Kendall Rocks!). Now that it's over, I can honestly say it was one of my favorite classes. Don't take it unless you are prepared to work.
This class is definitely only for people who truly want to learn neuroscience. You MUST be in to it, because it is the hardest class you will ever take. SO much material, leanr on your own. He provides endless websites , and is probably the smartest man ever. BUT, teaching style could be more clear. Tests are HARD!You have to be in to it fully.
very hard class with lots of information. must read all of the information if you want to do well. most useful and interesting class i have ever taken. i learned soooo much information. worked my ass off and got an A. it was definitely worth it.
Class is mandatory. Professor keeps things interesting. Must go to class prepared or will be lost, but this is explained first day. Tests are difficult. Lots of reading and studying. Don't take if not much free time. Prof. will help with anything. TA's are reliable. Being able to say you passed NEUROSCIENCE just feels kewl afterwards.
He was awful. He made inappropriate comments and insulted the class constantly, went off on tangents during lecture and was just generally one of the worst professors i've ever had.
The hardest class i have ever taken! close to impossible! he is extremely smart and has to realize we all aren't meant for this!
worst teacher ever!!
Don't believe the hype. Dr. Skeen is a wonderful teacher... if you are interested in Neuro. Even if you didn't do so well, ask yourself one question... how much more do I know having failed Skeen's class, than having aced most of your other classes???? Advice: Stay ahead or you'll be behind.
I would definitely NOT recommend taking this class over winter session (and online nonetheless) if you want to keep your sanity. I did and it was a LOT of work packed into a short amount of time. He isn't too keen on explaining things very clearly, as he uses acronyms for everything (without an explanation). You DO need the textbook, keep up!
I took the honors section of this course and it required more work than all of my other classes combined. You have to read the text and memorize things as they are assigned or you will be screwed. Skeen posts possible exam questions for each section and as long as you answer them ahead of time and study them you'll be fine.
Please read the textbook. Professor Skeen is there to help you when you need it, but you must rely pretty heavily on your own study skills. He provides the material, but it is up to you to learn it. Don't be afraid to go talk to him. He's very approachable and answers emails very quickly. He also gives nice curves on the exams.
This class requires a lot of hard work and initiative--especially for a psych course. If you are not motivated or hate to study, then this course is NOT for you--don't waste Skeen's and his TAs' time. I loved B&B...I was a TA for 2 years, and am now pursuing my PhD in Neuroscience because of him. Skeen is hilarious and a true intellect. Enjoy!
He's used to teaching upper level honors classes and uses unnecessarily big words. Exams are impossible, don't know what to study at all. Talks way too fast and isn't really available for any extra help. Not well suited for an intro neuroscience course. Stay away.
Avoid! I have never put so many hours into a class to get such a bad grade. Exam's are all essay and pretty much impossible. He also likes to call his students morons. He goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the exams and you will not understand him unless you happen to be a pre-med student.
The most interesting professor I've had so far at U.D. Neuro majors will have to take him at some point so just embrace his teaching style. Psych majors typically suffer. Very difficult but you will learn so much. Exams are hard but do-able, no other grades though you MUST study. You learn to love Dr.Skeen. Can't wait to take him again.
Very difficult class (100 question tests not counting essays), if you are taking psychology do not take this class neuroscience majors only. What he says in class has of little value on the test, uses mostly the book. He calls his students stupid, and lazy and probably the biggest troll of all time. Can ya dig it?
Dr. Skeen is a very interesting person but he does not understand that he is teaching undergraduate psychology students. He is very smart but uses language that makes it impossible to understand so you have to learn from the book. Only take this class if you are pre-med, you will learn more than enough.
Do not take this class unless you have a heavy background in science. Just don't. I saw the bad reviews on here before and thought that if I just studied really hard I'd be okay, but I really regret not dropping this course. Let's just say my cortisol levels are approaching critical levels thanks to this course.
If you keep up with the readings, pay attention in all the classes, and are really really good at memorizing alot of material, you'll do well. If you don't you probably won't. Guy's really smart, but condescending and you have to rely heavily on your own study skills. Grade is 4 mostly multiple choice tests
Skeen is brilliant and makes the class challenging but doable. Some people think he's condescending but he's just trying to prepare students for the real world. definitely one of my favorite professors at ud.
Prof. Skeen has great lectures and he is a smart guy. His tests require a lot of studying but he gives so much extra credit because of the difficulty of the course material
Skeen is not as bad as previous ratings have made him. GO TO CLASS. He gives out extra credit EVREY SINGLE CLASS. Exams are difficult, yes,but he gives SO much extra credit AND curves so it more than makes up for it. If you dont go to class, you wont do well. Plain and simple. Read the text, he likes to test from it.
This man has more screws loose than the Columbia space shuttle disaster. It takes a special breed of man to dedicate his life to Neuroscience, though it is my personal belief that he has only done so to diagnose his own psychoses at an early age (but failed). However, Dr. Skeen is the smartest professor at this University & does not fluff reality
Great teacher, a little disorganized but the tests come straight from the text so if there is one class that you bail on but read the text, make it this one. In class he gives you extra credit every single day, sometimes being a little looney and offering up to 12 extra credit points on your exam. At the end of the course, he boosted everyones grad
This course is extremely difficult! He loves to put questions on exams that have nothing to do with what we learned. But, he gives ample opportunity for extra credit so if you study hard you should be ok.
Brilliant guy, knows what he's talking about. Has high expectations, but work is completely doable. To get an A, 1 read the textbook, even the chapters that he doesn't assign but are related, 2 GO TO CLASS, there's a ton of extra credit when you prepare adequately!, & 3 MC exams are pretty much out of the textbook :)
Lectures are scattered and tests have questions on info that was not actually taught in class. He expects you to learn alot besides what is covered in class. This class happened to be for 2nd writing requirement and he assigned 2 additional papers that weren't on the syllabus in addition to the 55 minute group presentation. Work hard or avoid this
Skeen is very clear and outlines exactly what's going to be on the test, he even gives some of the test questions before hand. He offers extra credit everyday - it's hard but if you do the readings, you should get some. He explains everything well and in depth. He really wants everyone to succeed and pass.
Best professor I've had here. Course requires intense studying hours and understanding of material; however, it is a college science course---if you don't want to put in effort, quit. 4 exams, tough but doable if you study. He curves every exam, and gives extra credit opportunites every class. So prepare for them and go to class.
People have issues when professors make them work hard. Grow up. Dr. Skeen is brilliant. You are learning from a neuroscience "stud." Stop complaining that you have to memorize brain anatomy for a NEUROSCIENCE class! You will learn so much in his class. Plus, he curves and gives extra credit. So work your ass off and you will be fine
Read the textbook and look at the slides. It is not possible to get a raw score A on his tests. He does it show that there is no way you can understand something as complex as the brain. It doesn't matter at all because he curves
He was funny and nice and passionate. He is used to teaching at the graduate level so gave a very heavy work load. Started every class with a quiz. Tests were very hard. This class is not hard because he is bad (because he is very good) it is hard because the material is very difficult. This was the most helpful and informative class I've taken
Skeen is hard, no question. Don't let that scare you half to death though like it seems to have for a lot of people. The material itself is hard too! (c'mon psych majors, confounds) There's no "easy" way to learn this stuff. Read every page he tells you to, memorize it however you do best, and you're fine. Do it before each class for extra credit.
Hard class. Dr. Skeen is very smart and talks about stuff that is way above what you need to know. Go to class he gives out extra credit quizzes at the beginning of class. Tests are hard and long but he curves a lot so it makes up for it.
