She has the capacity to deliver very good lectures. However, her opinions frequently get in the way of the facts. She is very anti-cognitive, and she treats her TAs like crap. Please, no lectures based on poorly designed gender studies.

She rocks! The class I took with her was EASY!!
Her tests are really difficult and often ask obscure questions. In class, she spends too much time on material that will not even be mentioned in exams. She is fairly entertaining, though, and answers questions well.
Hard tests & makes you do homework on chapter before she lectures so that when she lectures it's ridiculously boring
she is the best lady when she likes you.
a fun, easy class... I would recommend it for any psych major (or otherwise) who wants to boost their gpa!
she is a wonderful neuroscience teacher !!
She's alot of fun!
Insensitive, plays favorites, tests are super hard, not helpful during office hours. She has made me cry and smiled as she did it.Loves the fact she went to Brown and is intellectually pretentious.
good lectures. gets sidetracked and likes to talk about who she knows and about Brown. tests are fair, although sometimes she throws in some bad questions (the TAs do most of the work for you) sit close to the front and ask/answer questions. Homework is helpful, makes you read and gives background.
Great Class, very interesting, quite easy if you get the class-attendance bonus points
Don't believe the other reviews, her class is easy but interesting. Lectures can get repetitive with text reading, but good, pretty easy class all the same.
Easy compared to bsci 110. Very outgoing teacher, cool material.
Tests are hard. She cares about everyone learning it though.
Good teacher and rather easy class. You do have to study and know the material, but the tests are completely straight forward, and if needed, she gives curves. Gives LOTS of extra credit opportunities. She's a little ditzy and digresses a lot (mostly talking about Brown U), but it's a fairly manageable A.
I took both neuroscience and human sex with her. She a nice woman - qwerky and fun, will make you laugh (often at not with). 201 is easy compared to bsci classes, moderately difficult compared to psy/non-bio classes. She grades much easier for 252 than 201. Lots of extra credit; to do well keep up with your work; moderately helpful in office hours.

Leslie Smith cares and is an awesome teacher that will make sure you don't lose interest in her class if you do poorly on the first test. her subject is hard and her tests are not easy but she will personally see that you do well if you show her that you care and that you make an effort. she rocks my academic world.
took 2 classes with her. She IS crazy! picks favorites and gives them the best grades.
this class is BORING. dont be mislead into thinking this class will teach you much. she seems to be stuck in the olden times because the focus of this class is anatomy and stds.i thought it would cover more than just that kind of stuff and be a little more out there. plus her tests are tricky and class average usually super low B. dont take it!
very interesting class, not as easy as it may seem but with a little effort its not a hard class. she makes it fun, class is enjoyable, although the tests are more specific than the class lectures are. lots of extra credit.
Hard first test, but then completely made up for it with basically two take home tests. Could be hard, but she takes great care to make sure most people get quite good grades. Another quality Smith class, take it for NSC or PSY majors.
Having developed the depts both @ Brown and here, she is a very knowledgable person. Obviously, she tries to relate through stories, which are sometimes made awkward or silly by the age gap. You might sometimes pick up on a little air of superiority on her, but that is a characteristic of most geniuses. All neuro/psych majors should take her class.
she tries hard to make her class interesting, and while her efforts are laudable, it was boring as hell. it helps to pay attention during lecture, but reading the book is enough for getting an A.
Smith was a good teacher. Very nice, and hard not to like her. Class is interesting but boring in the middle. Doesn't like to write new tests, so she recycles from previous exams. Check your test files and she posts them online.
This class is amazing, fun, and pretty easy! I thought this class was great, I learned alot of useful information and had fun in the class. You do need to read the chapters for the test but their not that bad and they give review sessions which are helpful. I really liked this class and i think EVERYONE should take it because it applies to everyone
4 extra points for attendance and homework, no excuse for not getting those. She's a morning person and it annoyed me, I like a teacher to just teach the material, no cheesy stories/jokes necessary. But she's nice, very helpful, and wants the class to do well (hence the 4 pts). Just study the book, and you'll get an A
also called nsc 252, attendance is not "mandatory" but you get 4 points on your average for just showing up to class plus class is interesting and fun (she plays music and is quite the character in class). Exams are not easy but are straight forward - mostly from notes but must read the text. All multiple choice exams and a non-cumulative final.

Interesting class and she goes out of her way to help you succeed. Go to class and do the homeworks for 4 points on your grade. Lectures are boring but cover all you need to know. Follows the book too, as well as hands out lecture outlines.
Great prof! She is able to explain hard material well and really has an interest in seeing her students succeed. She gives extra points for attending class and is helpful during office hours. The tests aren't easy but if you read the text and go to class you'll do fine. If you have questions about other psych classes or profs go to her ofc hrs
This class was really hard, averages on all of our tests were in the 'D' range. Must be able to command a lot of material, take this if you are good at science. Go to class/do homework to get 4 points added to your average.. you're going to need those.
Human Sexuality... She plays the song "lets talk about sex" on the very first class. This class is and easy advanced course. There are three tests, no homeworks, no finals. But you need to go to class to take the extra credit. I think it worths. You learn a lot.. (about sexx :)
AMAZING CLASS! You must take it. Study hard for the tests or you won't get an A, but there is extra credit and the tests are curved most of the time. Don't miss a chance to take this class...it will change your life.
The best professor I have had in college! I will go out of my way to take another class she teaches. She makes lectures interesting with videos, demostrations, and examples. She is always willing to answer any question will go over challenging material repeatedly. She was very available, open to student input, and wants you to succeed.
Leslie is a great professor! This class should not be hard for science and engineering majors. Going to class, taking go notes, doing the reading, and studying like you should for any science class will get you an easy A. It's not that hard. I don't see why ppl are complaining. Nothing quantitative. Mostly memorization, some harder concepts.
Make sure and attend and study off of the review slides.
If you are in the humanities and you are just taking this class because you think it would be interesting, DON'T. It's not worth it. Unless you like memorizing paths of the brain or happen to really like bio and chem, because they are both incorporated somewhat. My advice would be to take psychology 101 instead.
Leslie really know what she is talking about, but if you are taking the class because you think it is interesting I would not recommend it. The text is mandatory to read, as well as going to class. leslie is not very helpful outside of class and she runs through the material VERY fast. For beginners, Neuroscience is not a good choice.
Dr. Smith is a great teacher she can explain hard material well and she is funny. I definitely recommend taking her classes. Her tests are mostly multiple choice and can be hard sometimes, but she's very fair and curves or throws out bad questions.
Smith is pretty quirky, but incredibly fair. She continually cuts us slack when she messes up, like giving us a few free 100s on quizzes if the wrong assignment was put up or something of the sort. She is very helpful, and I have no problems understanding her. She is very willing to help her students. She is also very passionate about the subject.
I would say she is a good teacher. She's a little odd at times, but her passion for the subject is quite obvious, which makes the class at least slightly more exciting. She is very fair with the grading of the class, and if you put in the effort, it really isn't too hard to get an A. I don't recommend this class for anyone who doesn't like science.
So sweet - cares about her students. Don't be intimidated by the subject-you'll get over the awkwardness pretty quickly, and Dr. Smith's maintains a good sense of humor about it all. Sometimes her lectures were unclear (she would confuse words when she was talking), but reading the text helped. Exam questions were sometimes annoyingly confusing.

GREAT PROF! Very knowledgeable and entertaining. And open to questions. Not an automatic A but definitely worth the work.
It is a very interesting class. The material up to the first test is really interesting, and then it gets a little cumbersome. However, she is hilarious and is very kind. It is helpful to read the book, but most of her test questions come from her lecture material that is not mentioned in the book.
she expects a lot from students. the class is not hard, but takes up a lot of time to study. prof smith is very funny, and makes the lecture very relaxing while making the point clearly. however, it is NOT easy to get an A in the class coz a lot of smart ppl are in it. if you're not premed or just wanna take it for fun, DON'T if want a good grade.
Love her. I want to take all of her classes. She is extremely intelligent, a tad crazy, and super passionate. very VERY willing to help anyone. It's not difficult to do well in this class at all.
I have taken both neuro and human sexuality with Leslie and really enjoyed both of her classes. Her tests are reasonably tough, but an A is definitely attainable in neuro and while sex is not an "easy A" it's still not a very hard class. I would definitely recommend Leslie, and she gives very helpful advice to neuro majors.
Dr. Smith is lost half of the time. During lecture she says somthing and then is like oh that was wrong or thats not what I meant. Her exams are very challenging. 50% fo the questions are not from the book, they are just random questions she makes up and the answer choices are very confusing. NOT easy A. Is not an easy A for perspectives.
Go to class to get the extra credit. Study the night before tests by reading the chapters. Always participate in her extra bonus opportunities. Almost no work = easy A
okay. so basically I am a neuro major, and the class was a great way to start into the major, but the class was pretty difficult, yet manageable. I dont recommend to take it as a 1st semester freshman, but definitely 2nd semester. I learned a lot, and she keeps the class extremely interesting! However, dont to extra credit. only 1.5 pts each
Not too hard, requires some work but it's a science class. easy compared to bio classes. if you do the hw (you have your book for these and they are easy) and go to class that is 20% of your grade. Exams may be confusing at times but if you know material, you'll still get an A. Gives extra credit (DO IT) and TAs (Braden) are helpful and so is she.
Great teacher, does a very good job explaining topics and is receptive to student's questions and concerns. I found some of her comments on abortion and research techniques to be disturbing.
The class is harder than people expect. I got an A in the class and most people received B's and A-'s. I read all of the chapters because the tests are detailed and not in the lecture and there are usually a couple questions just from the book. The test grades tend to get lower overtime. Class was fun. TA's were great. She is a little out there.
Best class I've had here. Dr. Smith is entertaining and makes the material interesting. You'll want to go to class everyday. The tests can be a little tricky, but totally worth taking her class.
Best professor at Vanderbillt. She takes a personal interest in students and actually wants you to succeed. Tests are generously curved. This class covers a lot of material - but the material is interesting and will provide a strong foundation for any future bio/neuroscience/BME classes. Best class I've taken at Vanderbilt.
Leslie said on the first day of class it was an easy A if you attended and paid attention. This is not true. Memorize the slides and read the text for the tests. Some questions completely come out of nowhere. That aside, the class is extremely interesting and she is hilarious. Some units are better than others.
NOT an easy A. Tests are very tricky and some of the questions are just based on her opinions. You must read the book AND attend lectures to do well. You will absolutely need the extra credit for attendance. Her powerpoints are posted, but not informative. GO TO CLASS. READ. But in general it was a pretty interesting class and I would recommend it!
Class was EXTREMELY interesting, but you MUST ATTEND CLASS and MUST READ THE BOOK to do well on the very hard tests. TAs super helpful and good ec opportunities.
One of the best lecturers at Vandy, especially for a science professor. Neuro is her thing. Lots of people take it to fill reqs, but unless you take a genuine interest, it's not an easy class. Curve is generous but it's still somewhat of a weed-out course. Only a handful of tests(80+ q's) are nearly your entire grade. Study & take good notes.
Dr. Smith is the best! She is extremely passionate and it definitely rubs off, after all its thanks to her that I'm now on the Neurosci track myself! Read the textbook and go to lecture and you'll love the class too.
Dr. Smith is an awesome teacher and I enjoyed attending her lectures. Neuro 201 requires about the same effort as a general science class at Vandy but test grades are more rewarding.
I'm a bio major who took this class on a whim. The material is very interesting and the tests remarkably easy. Her daily quizzes are a bit high school but they keep you on top of the reading. Her lectures are disorganized, but entertaining. Go to the TA review sessions because they pretty much tell you what's going to be on the test.
She is a wonderful prof who knows what she's doing! I ended up being a neuro major thanks to this class. The tests aren't very hard if you take the time to read the book and get a general idea of her focus in lecture.
Professor Smith is a good person who enjoys giving boring lectures with funny clicker questions. She gives tests that have nothing to do with class and are very difficult to do well on. NOT WORTH IT.
Not as easy and the comments make it out to be. Much more biology than anatomy. Although the time commitment isn't much, the tests cover a lot of material and her lectures move quickly. Large grade bumps though with extra credit from attendance and curves. She is awesome. Recommend if youre willing to put in the effort.
This class is one of the easier sciences at vanderbiltcompared to chemistry or physics it was much more enjoyable.would recommend taking biology first though so that her sections on molecules are not overwhelming.she moves fast but is super clear.her tests are long but getting a good grade is easy if you study.she is super helpful andloves students
Engaging, helpful, and informative. Very fair and clear grading. She gives reading quizzes that help boost your grade, as well as lots of extra credit opportunities (class attendance=extra credit). TAs are helpful, and they offer comprehensive pre-test review sessions. Tests require a decent amount of studying, but are very doable.
Prof.Smith is great and very helpful. She tries really hard to make sure her lectures are clear and everyone understands. There is a lot of reading though. The class is pretty straightforward on grading, the tests are based on the textbook. Definitely go to lectures, put in effort and getting an A is definitely possible.
Smith is great, and she is a wiz when it comes to Neuro. She is one of the leading neuroscientists in America--she is obsessed with the brain in the best way possible. She is very passionate about the subject, and is always willing to answer questions that students have. She really helps clear up the reading. You better take one of her classes.
Harder class than I anticipated. Thought a class like human sex would be a joke, but it is kind of like biology. Her tests are just multiple choice on random stupid questions, so if you're not good at memorizing everything a teacher says don't take class. No real critical thinking, just memorization.
Great Class. The material isn't that challenging. You need to study, but the tests are relatively straight forward. Smith is one of the best lecturers I've had so far, and she personally wrote me a recommendation to a lab I wanted to work at. Definitely consider taking it with BSCI 110B, as a lot of the material coincide.
Not a blowoff class. You need to attend lecture (entertaining but focused), take good notes, read the textbook, and go to the TA review sessions. She curves and gives extra credit, and 25% of your grade is attendancehw completion. Average difficulty overall. Smith and TAs want to help you succeed, if you're willing to put in basic effort.
She's a great lecturer and gets you excited about neurons. Tests will be a challenge, and I recommend studying at least a few days in advance.
she's an awesome professor. definitely a lot of reading. online quizzes before every class (twice a week). she is really engaging and the TAs are pretty good as well. would definitely recommend it but it is a bit intense.
Leslie is a great professor, and Human Sexuality is a great class. Definitely would recommend it, but it is NOT an easy A. In fact, the tests are some of the hardest I've taken while at Vanderbilt.
Prof Smith really cares about her students, she is passionate about neuroscience even if some of her lectures are confusing and slow. Took this class to satisfy a science requirement and while not a scientific person, it was definitely doable. Prof. Smith even tells students that they can call her cell if they have questions. Interesting class!
Human Sex is that must have class at Vanderbilt. The tests are HARD, I repeat the tests are HARD, some of the hardest tests that I've taken at Vandy yet I learned a lot in the class. You have to read in order to do well as although Leslie can be dry at times, she tries to be funny
Tests are weirdly specific. They don't even read the assignments or extra credit. Always make sure to bring your clicker or if you forget it, don't even bother going to class. They won't give you credit if you're there.
She doesn't really know you because the classes are so large, but Human Sexuality is a great class. However, it isn't an easy A, there are only 3 tests, each count for 25% and they are big and really hard. Must study. and the review sessions are a waste of time. TAs are usually unhelpful and just want to get out of there.
Professor Smith was nice enough, the class was absolutely huge though so you don't really get to know her. If you show up to every class for the clicker questions, do the assignments, and do the readingstudygo to the review sessions, it's a decently easy class. It is more science-related and biology driven than I expected though.
Leslie is great. 10% of your grade is attendance so you have to go to class. There are online quizzes before every class but you can work with your friends on them so again, not too bad. Tests are manageable and the TAs do a super helpful review session the night before each test. There was also a huge extra credit assignment offered.
Dr. Smith is a really good lecturer, but the class is very difficult. Despite having no prerequisites, I REALLY recommend having a strong background in chemistry and some biology if you want to do well or understand the material.
The class was pretty difficult and textbook intensive. She does a good job of lecturing on the reading and clarifying difficult subjects. She definitely knows what she is talking about. She ended up giving a lot of extra credit, so it would be helpful to ask for it if you're struggling. Its a hard class just by topic alone, but she's exceptional.
Dr. Smith is an amazing lecturer and a really accomplished person! The lectures count more on the tests than the actual reading, but doing the reading is still important. There are also really helpful review sessions before the tests, and when asked, she is likely to give a lot of extra credit! This is a really hard, but really great class to take.
She is awesome! She wants everybody to do well, so go to her office hours if you need help! 2 readings a week is pretty tough, but doable if you prioritize it. Very interesting material, and there is extra credit Ted talks you can watch. She's hilarious and fun, but the tests involve applying the material learned and are therefore tough.
Her Powerpoints are really not useful at all, so you have to read the book carefully. Her tests are all multiple choice, and there's lots of minutiae that you need to remember. Make sure you keep up with reading and quizzes; it's almost impossible to pass otherwise. Classes are kind of boring, though, but she's a really nice person who tries hard.
This class is very detailed and the tests will be over all of these details. Pay attention in class and do the readings. If you're still struggling she is incredibly excited to offer help in office hours. Very engaged and excited professor! Clearly loves what she's doing.
I LOVE Leslie Smith. I took her for Neuro, and then took Human Sexuality just because I wanted to have her again. Trying to get into another class with her. If you pay attention in class, the tests are super easy. Keep up with the minimal assignments (fun essays for Human Sex and pre-class quizzes for Neuro). Absolutely amazing professor. 10/10.
The tests are much harder than I would have expected. Neuroscience and memorization of charts/diagrams are heavily involved. Fascinating and engaging lectures. I love Leslie!!
Smith's neuroscience isn't easy, but it's a valuable class to take. She's very helpful during office hours, and responds to texted questions (!). Her tests are strenuous, but she understands this and gives out a ridiculous amount of extra credit. She's also kind of quirky, and makes sex jokes during class. Take that how you will, I guess.
Smith's human sexuality is hard for exams. Usually 3 exams. The first review session is useless. The last two review sessions are super helpful. TAs directly told u what to test instead of answering some questions. I won't complain about this but I think it is unfair somehow. Exams are usually about super detailed in readings.
Smith's Neuroscience class was challenging but so worth it. There are quizzes every night before lecture but there are always Quizlets with the answers so it's usually just easy points. The textbook is excellent (she actually wrote part of it!) but way too detailed. Look at her PowerPoints beforehand and only read the sections she covers.
She is very passionate about what she talks about and makes it interesting and engaging. However, she often goes on tangents and talks about things that she finds interesting rather than what is going to be on the test. Very nice and easy to communicate with.
Dr. Smith is a joy to listen to and material was interesting. She goes on tangents about info not on the tests, so just make sure to study the Powerpoints and you will be fine. Tests can be tricky, but attending class, doing the quizzes, and completeing the extra credit ensures a good grade in the class. She truly cares about all of her students.
For a class that is deemed an "easy A", you do have to put a considerable amount of effort. However, the material is interesting and relevant to college students so paying attention is not an issue. Make sure and read the textbook as the purposely pull material from it that wasn't studied in class. Also, make sure and attend review sessions.
I loved neuroscience! This is not an "easy A" class - a lot of work I put in to get an A. The tests *MOSTLY* come from the lecture notes, but when you are studying difficult topics, the book helps. 2 chapters of reading per week, but she gave a lot of extra credit in the end. Dr. Smith is so nice!
Dr. Smith is excellent, and she is very knowledgable. I took Human Sexuality this semester, and I am taking her neuroscience class next semester. If you have heard that this class is an Easy A, DO NOT assume you can get by without reading material or paying attention in lecture. Also, 10% of the grade is attendance, so show up! Awesome professor.
Anything Dr. Smith says in lectures is fair game for the test. I recommend reading the assigned text before hand so that her lecture is a clarification of that (the info is confusing, so it's good to read then listen to her explain it). Posts lecture notes online - review them before the test. TA's hold review sessions as well, which are helpful.
Took neuro and human sex with her. She is always there for her students. Use her office hours because she will hook you up with whatever advice you need. Love her so much.
If you come to class (they track if you show up), pay attention/take decent notes, do all the weekly homeworks (participation grades, take about 10 minutes to do), and do the extra credit option at the end of the semester, you should be able to get an A- or A no problem. Tests can be hard, need good class notes to get an A. MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR!!
Great class and great professor. I learned so much from this class. Reading the textbook is pretty essential for understanding the material, but her lectures clear things up when it's difficult to understand. Tests are hard but fair, and she gives huge extra credit assignment and added a few points to our 2nd test
Intro Neuro with Leslie has been my favorite class taken at Vandy so far. It's not an easy class by any means but her expectations are clear and her testing is fair. Also she is both brilliant and hilarious. Just know that some of her info, particularly her stuff on the male v female brain is a little dated and very problematic.
Apparently 5 means simply showing up and passing so it's not that easy, but in comparison to the other premed intro courses (gen chem, intro bio, intro physics), this is probably the easiest. It requires a little outside work/memorization though. For helpfulness, she's pretty available if you have questions but sometimes she ignores your emails..
She's great! Fun to talk with and easy to understand, though the lightening in Wilson 103 is dim enough to induce sleep (I say this because she keeps the lights low). Her test require you to apply knowledge to made-up situations. People usually do well on them. She's eccentric, but very strong. She's had a hard life, but she always stays positive!
Inspirational person, decent lecturer. Tests aren't easy but aren't impossible either - people generally do fine after reading the textbook and going over powerpoints. Interesting content.
Really interesting content, her lectures can be a little dry but they aren't horrible. Average professor. Although she is mysterious.
Dr. Smith is amazing and she inspired me to major in neuro. She is very willing to help all of her students and she is so passionate about the material. By no means an easy class, but if you keep up with the reading and work you will be fine. TA study sessions before every test helped a lot. If you are considering neuro as a major, take her!
The tests are unnecessarily difficult since students are expected to remember the smallest of details from the textbook. The phrasing of questions could also be simpler or the multiple choice options direct instead of confusing and tricky. In order to do well, be ready to cram the book and pray to remember every little detail.
Leslie Smith has been my favorite teacher at Vanderbilt so far. She is absolutely hilarious, so you'll always stay entertained. The tests can be tricky, but you could only go to the review sessions before each test and still make a good grade. A major part of your grade is showing up and doing weekly assignments which are completion grades. So easy
Leslie is easily one of the best professors at Vanderbilt, but that does not make the class an easy A. There is lots of dry reading, but she does her best to make the lectures interesting for the students. Keep up with the reading and a good grade is manageable. She gives lots of extra credit as well. I cannot recommend her more.
Dr. Smith closed out the semester today with a dab. What more can you ask for? The class was not an easy A by any means, but if you actually read the assigned chapters and do the extra credit, an A- shouldn't be hard at all. She made the lectures really engaging, even if they did seem to drag on at times. I'd definitely take Dr. Smith again.
I also witnessed Dr. Smith's amazing dab today for the final class. She's a fun teacher and very knowledgeable, and does a great job of teaching potentially awkward subjects. The tests are painfully specific so it's a good idea to study through lecture ppts and by reading the textbook, but the work load is minimal and lectures are fun.
There are only 3 tests and everything else is just super easy assignments graded for completion with tons of extra credit given for attendance
Take this class. Leslie is amazing and I learned so much useful information. The lectures and reading are both important for tests, but extra credit is offered in case you need it. Go to the test reviews, they are very helpful. Definitely one of my favorite classes at Vanderbilt.
I expected a pretty easy A out of human sex but I really had to work for it. The multiple choice exams have random statistics questions (like what % of women have had sex with other women?) that are pretty impossible to answer unless you memorized the textbook. Extra credit at the end will boost you up half a letter grade.
Human Sexuality was interesting and Leslie's lectures were usually funny (unless they got too science-heavy). Tests were hard but fair, and the TAs put review slides on Blackboard that were super helpful and gave my studying a direction (reading the textbook takes FOREVER). Attendance, (easy) assignments, and extra cred helped boost the grade.
It's clear that Leslie is passionate about neuroscience and her students. She is always available to help and gives lots of opportunity for extra credit. The tests can be difficult but they are based directly off of things mentioned in lecture. The book has a lot of extra info you don't need so if you have good lecture notes you should be fine.
This class isn't an easy A as it might seem, but it definitely is achievable. Tests can be super specific and lowkey hard. Lots of extra credit and completion grades to boost you up though. Very interesting material, and definitely show up to class, even if you have to sleep through it. Textbook helped me a good amount, although it was a lot.
I would definitely recommend taking human sex for an AXLE credit. Only three (non cumulative) and all multiple choice. Readings can be between 200-230 pages per test, but start reading early and you'll be fine. Review notes and TA slides very well and A- is easy. I got an A without extra credit but she has very generous extra credit too
Human Sexuality is a must-take! The content is always very interesting (though some of the videos shown in class are not) and the TopHat questions are easily my favorite part of the school week
Dr. Smith is a really good professor. She tries her best to make this heavy class funny and easier to understand for everyone. Though tests are hard, she curves a lot.
I love Leslie. Her class is hard but it's worth it in my opinion. She's very accessible and is always willing to help. Sometimes, she can be confusing in class and not explain things super well, but you can always go to her office hours and get help. Also she offers great extra credit!
It is hard, but once you kind of get what's going on in class, you'll do fine. It is hard to get an A in this class, but B+A- is doable, especially with the extra credit. Be prepared to read and put a lot of effort.
Dr. Smith is absolutely amazing, and if you have the chance to take her class you definitely should. Her lectures are so interesting, and though the class is hard, she knows that and helps by being available and giving extra credit. Tests are completely from lecture, so you should only have to read the textbook to supplement your notes.
Dr. Smith is a great professor. She is very passionate and experienced in neuroscience. HW are just reading textbooks and tests are all MC, non-cumulative. Lectures sometimes get long, but she is very willing to help you learn and explain difficult concepts. Definitely take it if you have any sort of interest in neuro, and you'll learn a lot.
Leslie is a very sweet and funny person. She clearly is very knowledgeable and passionate about neuro, and she is always willing to help her students. I highly recommend going to her office hours. She is kind of disorganized and would waste a lot of class time, however. The TAs were pretty useless.
Leslie smith is a real gem. Teaching a subject like neuroscience would definitely be easy to make boring, but she makes it extremely interesting and fun. Taking another class with her next semester and am greatly looking forward to it.
This class is so easy. No reason to show up for lectures other than to enter the attendance code. There is real opportunity to learn though. Dr. Smith went out of her way to be accessible, going as far to give us her cell phone number. There was opportunity for 4% extra credit in the class. Take to boost science gpa and learn some cool stuff.
This class definitely isn't super easy. You have to work hard. Her lectures are very important since her tests are mostly from the lectures. She offers 3% points of extra credit and 1% for consistent attendance. She makes the class very interesting! I have learned so much from her class. Take this class!
Absolutely fantastic professor with really great lectures. She is hilarious, explains material in super dynamic and captivating ways (including some wild demonstrations), and truly cares about all her students. Her tests can sometimes try to include tricky answer choices , but this is still one of the easiest and most fun STEM classes out there.
I don't know why people are so in love with her. She has an entertaining personality, but her lectures are extremely difficult to follow and not that helpful. If you memorize the slides you'll be fine. This isn't a difficult class, but her tests are worded terribly so it can be easy to get confused if you aren't careful. Lovely human poor professor
She doesn't know how to teach and she loves testing random details in her test.
Worst class ever, just don't take it and you'll thank me later
This is by far one of the worst class I have taken in Vandy. Class pace is slow and always goes off topic meanwhile the three midterms are ridiculous. Basically tons of content focused out of no where. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. just don't.
Prof Smith wasn't the greatest professor in my opinion. She was really nice, but she didn't seem too knowledgeable about the material and usually read heavily from the slides/her notes. The class material was nice to learn, but Dr Smith just wasn't the best at teaching it. Tests are harder than you would expect. Extra credit was helpful though!
Lectures are very difficult to follow and usually don't reflect the random material on the test, so read the textbook and memorize as many details as you can to be best prepared. The tests and class are curved heavily, and this class is an easy A if you are willing to put in the work to memorize. Recommend this class for Pre-Meds to boost GPA.
Abysmal. Test random details in the textbook. Do not take this class
Most people will tell you this is an easy A class but it's really not. She will continue to tell you it's an easy class or the tests are easy but a lot of effort is necessary for a good grade.
Smith is very nice and knowledgable, but not the best teacher. Class is definitely not an Easy A, you have to work hard even just for a B. Tests on a random detail she mentions in passing during class. Lectures are hard to follow, I recommend printing out the slides beforehand. Tests are pretty hard. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT NO MATTER WHAT.
Some reviews here aren't very accurate. Smith is super knowledgable and is a phenomenal STEM professor. There's SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT. I got a B+ test average and still got an A. She explains concepts so well during lecture, you just need to put in time to understand them. Tests are not random questions, they're straight from lecture.
The tests are not easy; you need to pay attention in lectures and review all of the slides thoroughly before the exams. That being said, all of the test questions come from lectures, there aren't random things from the book in there, so as long as you study, you should be fine. Leslie is super accessible in office hours too if you ever need help.
Leslie Smith is a gem. She cares about her students, is very accessible outside of class and has many funny stories. Her lectures are a bit disorganized and the material is challenging at times but if you print slides for class and study for tests (lecture + book) it's manageable. Definitely do the extra credit (bumps you half a grade)!!
I took Intro to Neuro with Leslie. Lets be honest, a class with this much material will always be somewhat hard to teach in a big lecture hall. If you go to lecture, stay awake and take notes (I highly recommend sitting close), the class isnt a terrible amount of work and you can learn A LOT. I dont recommend relying much on the textbook at all.
Great class. Probably the easiest molecular neuro one. Most interesting neuro class by far though. Each class is a guest lecturer, and you learn so much cool stuff. Take it if you can get in.
Professor Smith clearly cares about her students; she will repeat slides if need be, and she is ALWAYS available for questions. Although her lectures can sometimes be boring, I learned a lot in this class and would definitely take it again. It might not be your favorite class, but it is beneficial, especially if you want to go into healthcare.
I love Dr. Smith! She is so nice and caring. Human sex began getting harder with most people getting A- and many stuff pulled from the textbook, but the material is interesting and she is always willing to help.
I had Professor Smith for Human Sex. Though her lectures are funny and the content isn't particularly difficult, do not take the class if you are looking for an easy A. Her test questions are based mostly on lecture, yet her lectures have a lot of irrelevant facts/statistics that she'll end up mentioning on her exams for no reason.
This class is relatively easy compared to other intro to science classes but you still have to work a lot if you want to get an A. The review sessions for the tests are really helpful if you have good TAs and the tests are 75q mc. You need to really pay attention during lecture and understand what she is saying so taking the tests is easy
Leslie Smith is a very intriguing personality, but her lectures are difficult to learn from unless you are very invested in neuroscience. Besides looking for answers for the reading quizzes, there is no need to read the textbook. Don't really need to pay attention in class, all info you need to know is given during the review session.
For a class with such interesting subject material, Professor Smith somehow makes it pretty boring. A lot of her information is outdated. The multiple choice format for tests makes them harder than necessary. You definitely need to pay attention in lecture and do the textbook readings if you want to do well.
Prof is amazing, and I say this as one of few who got < A-. In terms of organization, 2201 has intuitive grading criteria & coverage of course material. TAs are 10/10. 2201 focused on learning & not grades; so even if u fail exams 1&2, sleep in lecture, & have chem/bio lab every review like me, dive into the material and you'll make it out ok (:
From a pre-med student background (junior), this class was extremely doable and easy, received essentially an A+, didn't read textbook towards 3/4 of the sem, just pay and record review sessions and memorize to get A's on the test. Def recommend this course as a science gpa boost for pre meds.
Leslie Smith is an absolute gem- best professor I have had at Vanderbilt. She is an incredible lecturer and is a subject matter expert. She is also hilarious- which is really a bonus. I had her for Human Sexuality, and it was in an incredible class. Her tests are quite challenging, though, but she offers extra credit.
not an easy class but you just need to take good notes and literally memorize and understand EVERYTHING she talked about. dont worry about reading the book she tells u all u need to know
Leslie Smith is a RIOT. Brings a lot of energy and fun to the classroom, and clearly puts a lot of effort into engaging students and making content interesting. However, her lectures are confusing, especially to non-STEM students, and I would def recommend a tutor or Kahn Academy vids. With the extra credit, you will be fine though. Worth taking.
Leslie is the best! Human Sexuality is a very interesting class and NEVER boring. Exams are more material than I expected & not an easy A but if you put more than a night into studying and go to the review sessions before the test you should be good. Weekly assignments that are graded on completion and always entertaining. Fun class and prof
This class is a gem for all the neuroscience majors because Dr. Smith brings in so many guest lecturers who are leading experts in their field. You will learn things that you won't in other classes. The biggest challenge is getting in the class.
Leslie Smith is a gem. Her lectures are engaging and she makes herself very available to answer questions. The material is NOT easy to understand and a lot of memorization is required, but TA review sessions help. If you are willing to work, a high grade is very attainable and you will learn a lot of information relevant to science and medicine.
Super fun professor. Very fun to talk to and hear all about medical school and neuroscience. Only thing is she goes off on tangents easily and the TAs will have to bail her out during review sessions
Loved, loved, loved this class! Professor Smith always kept the class enjoyable and fun, and took time to explain things thoroughly. She also was very accessible outside of class, and was very encouraging. The class is mostly reading quizzes, lectures, and a few tests, and as long as you pay attention, you'll get a good grade.
Dr. Smith is great! She makes the lectures very interesting and always keeps class exciting. The TAs host helpful review sessions before the tests and are very fair with grading. There was also extra credit offered at the end of the course!
Don't bother listening during lecture. Or reading ( a waste of time). DO GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS & RECORD/TAKE CAREFUL NOTES ON EVERYTHING THEY SAY. You can easily get an A without taking a single page of notes on lecture if you memorize and understand everything on review slides. Smith can't teach though, and she never meets deadlines for recs.
I just wanted to call attention to the fact that there is something suspect with this hire. She has no CV online. She has no publications on Scholar or Research Gate. For referencing her rich and powerful husband... I'm a bit suspect of how she worked her way up? This is an elite research institution -- and she has no publications available online?
Content is pretty interesting, but she is honestly a terrible lecturer and frequently doesn't know how to answer questions asked by students. There is a decent amount of material so you'll definitely have to study for the exams. Overall class is interesting but don't expect a free A you'll have to study hard for that
Don't mind the recent negative reviews. Dr. Smith is a real gem, really cares for her students, tries to make the class fun and interesting. As long as you show up to class, review sessions (very important) and briefly skim the book, easy A.
She's goodhearted & wants you to succeed, but she's not a clear lecturer and rambles a lot, especially for molecular processes. Content is heavy and not that easy to grasp. I usually left lectures confused and relied on the textbook to learn content. Online at least, it wasn't the best experience. TA review sessions + extra credit help though
Some students had issues with Prof. Smith but overall: great class, interesting stuff, easy to follow (download the slides beforehand). I rarely had to take notes as a result. If the class is online and its still open note: GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS and watch/read the supplements, dont read textbook (search textbook PDF as needed during exams)
Professor smith seemed nice enough, and I could tell she was really trying. But her lectures are scattered and her attitude is at times outdated. The class is easy enough since it was graded on three exams (all open note), and some of the material was very interesting. Youll have to teach it to yourself though, make sure to go to review sessions.
Very lecture-heavy and imo, you can get by without taking notes during lectures. Definitely go to the review sessions held by the TA's and pay close attention to what they say (often tell you exactly what's on the exam). Quizzes before every class (completion grade). She dropped our lowest exam of the first three. The extra credit is helpful too.
Leslie's class was interesting and I LOVED the people in my class, but I definitely think the material has progressed past her time ... at many times she said insensitive, homophobic, sexist, and/or otherwise discriminatory remarks. She seemed to always mean well but she isn't that educated on today's culture.
Easy class, as long as you do the readings/go to the review sessions, you'll be fine on the exams. There's also a decent amount of extra credit so don't worry if you did bad on one of the exams.
Readings are long, but TAs were helpful. Biology & anatomy background is useful but not necessary. Prof Smith is intelligent and tries to reduce her students' stress.
Currently a few weeks into class and it seems to be different than how she used to run class. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Her quizzes are no longer completion-based, and her suggestion of "doing a once-over" of the chapters is not reflected in the specificity of some of her quiz questions. Lectures are sporadic, but she is a nice professor and TAs are nice.
Definitely NOT AN EASY intro class. Be ready to spend a lot of time reading and studying. Prof Smith and TAs are super nice, and they are all accommodating and open to different ideas. However, I wouldn't recommend to take this class unless it's your major requirement. Quizzes are graded on accuracy and exams are hard
This may be the easiest class I ever took at Vandy. It's all guest lectures, and all you have to do is write a short summary on an assigned reading to prep you for each guest lecture. Tests are graded generously and you get the questions in advance (all short answer and written by students). Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures are worth it!
The workload is heavy and test is hard to understand
Quizzes and tests are made by different people so it was hard to accurately prepare. Never really knew what you were going into. Test protocols changed frequently. Pretty much needed to watch the recorded lectures repeatedly and go to the TA review session to do mediocre in class
Professor Smith is very knowledgeable on the material, provides mostly clear lectures with a lot of info that is on the tests, and genuinely cares about her students (she even gives us her phone number). The class material is definitely hard, but she is available outside of class. The tests are pretty straightforward, and there is extra credit.
Here is the thing about this professor. She has never published any research, and she is teaching at an elite research university. The way she teaches about gender and sex is outdated and she refuses to change the way she talks about these subjects. The class isn't terrible, but if you're looking for a good professor, look elsewhere.
Professor Smith pretty much teaches by the book. She has you read each chapter before class, and that's honestly all you have to do to perform well in addition to attending test reviews. The material is interesting, but there's no point in going to lecture if you can read the book and understand it. She offers extra credit that adds 5 grade points.
Dr. Smith is very sweet, but rambles in lecture and often makes content more confusing. I learned the material from the Exam review sessions run by the TAs. This class is very much still a STEM class, so the material is hard, but she also piles on extra credit. Before the final, I had over a 100 because of extra credit. Take at your own risk
This class is easy to get an A in if you make sure to have basic understandings. Attendance is not mandatory nor necessary if you're willing to do minimal effort to catch up. 6 points on your overall grade are added through extra credit, so it's quite easy to coast on exams, do well on quizzes, and still get an A. DEFINITELY! GO TO THE TA REVIEWS!
Read the textbook although its dense material and go to review sessions. Lectures are pretty dry for the most part. Gives extra credit so do it.
So much extra credit given. A lot of free points and the TA's tell you exactly what to do study during review sessions. Lectures are disorganized and not completely necessary. Easy A. Tests are easy and just pure memorization.
Horrible lectures. Make things unclear. Ask students to read textbook ahead of class instead of teaching them in class. What's the point to attend class if I have already read the textbook and the professor just go over them again in a shallow and confusing way? Definitely stay away from this class if not for credit. Read the textbook by yourself.
Class was one of the easiest workloads you will find. Due to it being guest lecturers all the time, the schedule is sometimes up in the air when work is due. Since Dr. Smith takes a sideline approach to this class, one doesnt have to deal with her off beat remarks too much if that kind of stuff bothers you
I think Dr. Smith is a great professor, and I thoroughly enjoyed her class. The class is not hard if you just memorize the material, all four exams (no final!) are 70-75 multiple choice questions. ***Go to the review sessions!!! All exam content is discussed there!!!!
NSC 2201 is quite manageable even if you aren't strong in STEM mostly because the class relies almost entirely on memorization and because there are so many opportunities to improve your grade (Extra credit, dropping lowest exam score, etc.). Prof. Smith is probably a little past her teaching primer; however, she is incredibly sweet and passionate.
BioBasis is interesting because it is taught completely by guest lecturers. Sometimes dense, making exams tough, but graded extremely leniently. Pretty light workload- studied for exams the hour before. Would highly recommend for senior neuro students. Presentations are easy. Dr. Smith is still problematic, opinionated, and out of touch
Very chill class, probably one of the easiest neuro electives. Attendance is mandatory and unexcused absences are pretty harshly penalized but the guest lectures are interesting so it is worth going to class. Very easily graded and TAs are great. Highly recommend!
Prof. Smith has a draconian and unbelievably old-fashioned attendance policy for Bio Basis. It is 2% off your final grade for missing lecture, and 4% off your final grade for missing student presentations. Attendance is taken via Tophat at the beginning of class and left up for ~5 minutes, so good luck if you are late.
While the class content was enjoyable, the TA continually stated that less people should be receiving A's, which was demoralizing and felt as though she was working against you, cemented by intense attendance policies and not permitting late assignments-- primarily enforced by the TA. One mistake or bad day and your entire grade is jeopardized.
I am majoring in Neuro but let me tell you, she is not representative of the Neuro track at Vandy. Her lectures are quite dry and boring and you don't even have to pay attention because the TAs makes the test and hold review sessions. TAs were mid; they were unresponsive to their emails and didn't really care. There is a lot of extra credit though.
Dr. Smith is a very caring person, but she's an absolutely terrible professor. She very easily gets sidetracked during lectures, and I personally felt that attending class was a waste of time. All she did was read the information from her slides and go off on the occasional side tangent. Her tests were very difficult, each with 75 questions.
at home quizzes were easy, extra credit at the end really helped. exams are long and hard, but if you study hard throughout the semester, youll be fine. dont recommend unless youre into the subject or field. dont take it if you dont have to
Dr. Smith is one of the best professors at Vanderbilt. She has hilarious lectures and is very caring for her students. She tries to develop close relationships with her students while also ensuring that they do very well in her class. The Ta's are useless though. Overall, I love Dr. Smith and her class is why I fell in love with neuroscience.
Great professor would take again.
Lots of reading, but its college, get used to it!
