Impossible to do well. AND she can never meet wiht you because she is the dept. head and suber busy.....NO
She was absolutely a horrible teacher, especially since she was the department head. I found her to be extremely brief and unorganized in her lectures and therefor very unclear in the subject matter. She is not willing to meet outside of class either.
She's a department head, what do you expect? Unless you're really good at math (like me), don't take her.
If you understand anything she says you deserve an award. She can't speak!! Terrible!
She's really good, nice, and helpful if you're good at math. If you don't have a knack for math, she might not be for you.
She is a very tough teacher. Do not take if your not good at math. I did well but had to get tutored every week. She can write on the board faster than any other human. Tests are difficult
Very hard teacher. She goes very fast. If you put effort in, do your homework and show up to class she respects you. She is really busy, so don't expect personal attention. Expect to study a few hours/day ig you aren't good at math.
She has an attitude b/c she's the department head, and she's not very good at communicating her thoughts to students of such little intelligence!! Basically, she talks down to students and doesn't care about whether they learn or do well in her class. Don't take her.
I feel like she speaks like the teacher from charlie brown. dude, its math...USE THE CHALKBOARD!!! i swear all i hear is x to the nth to the nth to the 4th ..and magically the answer is....NO SOLUTION!. how ????? i'd like to know.
She gives pretty hard tests. You HAVE to know what you're doing on them or you will get a bad grade! MATHXL SUCKS! She's willing to help you on her spare time but there is not much spare time. If math is not your thing I'd say take someone else.
the absolute worst teacher I have ever had
Overall not bad teacher. Her biggest flaws: goes thru material very fast and doesn't explains things very clearly. Homework is optional, but DO IT - IT HELPS ALOT FOR TESTS. Also if you are not sure about something in class ASK QUESTIONS because otherwise she will just keep going. If you know your stuff and do your homework you should be fine on t
probably the worst math teacher i've ever had.
Really easy class, she gives fair grades. You can do test corrections on all your tests to earn back points and she re-opens all past-due homework assignments on mathxl before the chapter tests.
Not very helpful at all and doesnt explain concepts clearly. Half the time if you ask her a question she is not sure of the answer. She writes the tests but pretends to have no idea whats on it, and they are hard. If you don't have an easy time with math, don't take her!
very hard/unclear. thinks she is better than her students. i spent up to 10 hours a DAY in the math lab, and still ended up with an academic alert. stay away! she is unhelpful, amd i HATE web assign! and no matter how much time you spend on the hw unless the answers are correct you get a 0. this class is the worst class ive ever taken
WOW! terrible professor. Took calc 1 in HS and made A's but she made calc almost impossible. Goes through material REALLY FAST. If you've never taken calc before DO NOT TAKE HER bc you prob wont do very well even if you understand math. Test revisions only on the first test if you got less than a 70%. Warning: Webassign = website from hell!
I don't understand why this professor has such terrible comments. She is a nice person and extremely helpful. Calculus is a hard subject and studying is necessary! Her tests are as fair as they could possibly be. Studying notes and completing the h/w will get you an A... She's one of the best teachers I have had at UM
Her grading is strict. brilliant mathematician, understands theorems, concepts, and proofs behind every equation used. excellent test maker, tests are fair representation of material. can NOT teach, terrible at answering student's questions, doesn't understand confusions. strong student in math will benefit from class, otherwise take different prof.
She is horrible! She cannot teach! She rushes through material and isn't helpful! I was in the class for 2 weeks and switched because I was failing, and math is my major and I've always loved it! But I spent hours crying and complaining because of her. Uses web assign which is the worst website EVER! Grades your hw for accuracy and takes at least
This is the worst class ever. I love math, but being in this class killed me. I couldn't even last 2 weeks before i dropped her. I've done calc before and i have no clue what she is talking about. She really should find another profession. Over the 2 weeks I had many break downs, mostly from the website on steroids from hell, webassign. GET OUT!
5 hours!! DO NOT GET THIS TEACHER! if you have her switch out!
uses webassign for hw, that site is HORRIBLE...you'll spend more time trying to figure out how to enter your answer than anything else. she teaches way too fast and doesnt explain things clearly. wouldnt recommend her class.
Rushes through the material as if it's a review. Not very helpful at all when students ask questions. and assigns homework through WebAssign... the anxiety attack disguised as a website.
She's a really hard teacher she uses WebAssign which is exactly as described below HORRIBLE her tests are hard but this semester she gave a lot of extra credit especially since the whole class is failing but she doesn't do it often, she's pretty helpful but i would still recommend another teacher personally..... way to much work
These comments are so unfair! I loved her! Webassign does suck but she is soooo nice and she'll extend the hw if you just ask. Her tests are very fair. If you study and attend class, you will get an A. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. Oropesa isn't the easiest teacher. And yes, webassign sucks. But if you just do the work and attend class, you should get an A. She's pretty fair with her tests, everything is straight from examples or webassign. She's also always available for help or questions. If you don't mind doing some work, I would definitely recommend her.
Pretty good teacher. Gives plenty of extensions for homework
I love this lady. She was so nice and always gave homework extensions. She does run through the material kind of fast, but she is always available for extra help. She also doesn't hold attendance against you. I hate math/am horrible at it but this was the one math class that wasn't torture. But there is A LOT of webassign homework
Contrary to some comment here, this woman is NOT the department head - although her arrogance could make you think that she is. Does not really know how to teach and she is not very sympathetic.
I actually loved her class. It isn't totally easy. There was a lot of homework, but she often gave extensions. The tests are straightforward. I'm not even a math person but we got along great, I aced the class, and she even wrote me a recommendation!
She very clearly knows what she's talking about. But the way she explains things in class is at such a ridiculous pace that unless you already have experience in what she's teaching you have no hope of understanding the lessons.
I thought this class would be easy-ish, instead it was the hardest class I took this semester. The teacher rushes through the notes she gives us and the 4 tests we have throughout the semester (aside form the final exam) aren't THAT easy... The material is hard if you don't study hard. Math lab is recommended. She is sweet though.
She taught her class way to fast for me. She writes so fast that you are always going to be a step behind. She is very nice, but I had a tough time learning from her.
She moves through the material very quickly. She doesn't take attendance but if you miss a class you'll be very far behind. She's very approachable and nice. Take good notes, follow along, and you should be fine! You definitely have to study hard and do the homework
She is a VERY GOOD TEACHER if you want to actually learn the material. She is very helpful when it comes to questions..just do not be afraid to ask! Her tests are very FAIR! You need to study, but she does not put anything you are not capable of on the tests. TAKE HER!
Very helpful but tough and fast you really need to stay sharp
She is a nice teacher and her tests are VERY fair. She gives you note packets which are extremely helpful and you don't even need a textbook. You have homework on mymathlab and tests. She is great and answers all questions you may have.
She is very nice and if you approach her after class with questions she will be more than happy to assist. However, in class she goes very fast and to follow along is hard. Her tests are not similar to the structure of the HW and they take a lot of practice to get used to.
It's definitely a tough class, but if you've got a good knowledge of Calc you should be able to get a B easily. Homework can be a bit overwhelming. If you study the class notes the tests are really easy, and she gives extra credit.
Good teacher, mastering online helps alot and she often extends the hw if the class needs it. As long as you usually go to class and pay attention/ do most of the homework you will get a good grade.
Nice woman. A lot of HW but she extends deadlines like crazy. Tests are easy. It's math so there's no real way to make the content exciting. She says attendance is mandatory but she took attendance once the entire semester.
She doesnt take attendence, which is bad since if you dont attend class youll be lost. She doesnt teach the material very well, gives a ridiculous amount of homework, and the tests are very hard. Switch out if you
She's a nice person, but she doesn't know how to explain herself very well. She tries to explain it, but she can't clarify what she did. She is very forgetful and doesn't remember to post homework or reviews till the last minute. All in all I don't recommend her.
She's nice, but goes too fast. The tests are what you covered in class and what's on the hw so do it and if you don't understand go to her office hours.
Leticia is awesome! She gets a bad rep because she goes fast and has a decent amount of homework, but it's not her fault. Her class is way better than what I heard from Rosenburg. All of her tests are fair and she's extremely helpful if you go to her office hours (especially if she gives you a take home test/quiz)
She goes very fast in class so it is easy to get lost or confused. She is very forgetful on posting homework, tests, reviews, etc. She is also very slow at grading the tests. The homework problems are always a lot harder than the tests, and the tests aren't bad. This class wont be a problem if you always go to class and do the homework.
everyone gives her a bad rep because theyre lazy, shes a good teacher, she does lots of examples, if you have questions she will answer all of them. she gives lots of hw yes, but it helps for exams. attendance not mandatory but should go because exams come from notes. theres 4 and a final, drops the lowest. always willing to help in office hours
Dr. Leticia is one of my favorite professors at UM. She is a great person and is always willing to help her students. She is very flexible with her assignments and she is one of few professors that actually cares about our busy schedule as engineering majors. She also has a great energy, the students are always interacting with her.
Professor letecia is so kind and caring for her students, she extends the homeworks so we could get a better grade, she has office hours where you could go and ask her questions, the class material is not hard if you are willing to put a little of effort. Just study the notes jn the bored and you will do good on your exams.
I managed to get an A- after being assigned 4 tests, 5+ quizzes and 1 exam some were take home - read even more intense She flies through her lectures so little can be easily retained. She was also unhelpful at office hours when asked a question on a test she wrote. Gives a lot of hw but is generous on the deadline. Do not recommend
Loved her!
A lot of homewor is assigned and even more than other math teachers. I took this class before and still had to put a lot of work in. She doesn't really make the work easier to understand, just easier to do if you do the homework. A lot of assignments in this class.
DO not take her if you want to even pass and aren't good at Math. I repeat DO NOT TAKE HER! She's a good person but a horrible teacher; Too many HMWKS, goes extremely fast etc..
Moves through material at a very fast pace. Lot of online quizzes; homework is very long and tedious.
DON'T TAKE HER. She flies through the material. When she does problems on the board she does like 4 steps in her head and it confuses the hell out of everyone. Math is my forte but she single handedly made me despise the whole concept of mathematics. HEED MY WARNINGS.
Professor Oropesa goes through her lectures and examples very fast, so I would only take the class if you have previous background in Calc 1. She also gives out an unnecessary amount of homework online, but it is mostly easy to do. Half of the quizzes are online, which makes it easier, but the tests during class are pretty challenging. Don't take.
Dr. Oropesa is a good teacher! She does many steps on her head but she would repeat anything you need if you ask her, and you are paying attention! She's really passionate about math and she would help anyone who is willing to learn! tests are based on the material seen in class. Homework is long, but it will help your final grade if needed!
There's a lot of homework but she is really easy going and extends the deadline on almost all of it. Missed an online quiz once and she reopened it. She's very easy going and is willing to help you work around your schedule for tests and quizzes. She is confusing at teaching and difficult to follow sometimes. Doesn't take attendance
Class is made up of her doing problems on the board, skipping steps, and flying through material. I took this class in high school and still struggled. SO much online homework. If you can avoid her, I would.
First time taking calc 1.. She does problems on the board that are extremely hard. half the time you can barely follow what she is doing. There is a homeowork every single class but sometimes she extends the date if there was more than one due on the same day. Her tests are like her questions on the board, hard. If you don't know trig, DO NOT TAKE.
To pass this class w flying colors: 1)Pay attention in class & do the notes(it's not enough to just show up) 2)Understand the homework(don't just try to get it done since you have an assignment every few days - it's like high school amount of hw; plus she'll extend the deadline a lot) 3)Optional: do the extra credit reviews she puts up for tests
Not my favorite teacher at Miami. However, she is willing to work with you to pass the class which is a very important attribute a teacher should have. IF you put in the work which means attending office hours, if you're not a strong math student, you will pass the class.
just way too hard
If you took calc in high school it's an easy A. She is not a great teacher and makes lots of mistakes but if you are a strong math student she's fine. Lots of homework but it's all online on WebAssign and you get 5 try's for each question. 7/9 quizzes were take home and 4 tests. She will grade your test in her office and gives tons of extra credit.
I had taken AP calc last year in high school and still struggled in this class. Her lectures are extremely confusing and she constantly makes mistakes when explaining problems. Her tests are moderate in difficulty and for quizzes she drops lowest 3. There is an excessive amount of homework for this class. She does however give TONS of extra credit.
Do not take if with her if you didn't take AP calc in high school. She assigns a ridiculous amount of homework that you are not able to focus on anything else except for getting the assignments done. Not a fair grader and not very good at explaining. Calc with her is very trig heavy. Not an easy A by any means.
ONLY TAKE IF HAVE TAKEN CALC 1 BEFORE. Not the best professor, but if already know calc, will pass the class. She is really nice; will never not answer questions. Easy tests (no surprises). A LOT OF EXTRA CREDIT. 99% of quizzes are online/take home. Some parts of tests are take home too.
She's not the nicest to her students! She's pretty nice if you're obviously trying in the class and get it but she can be a little condescending, which creates some negative vibes. She's flexible on work and an ok teacher though, as well as tries to help you if you go to her.
only take if good at math. teaches quickly, but will push back deadlines if necessary. have to go to class or will fail. fair grader and fair tests, but material is difficult. answers emails quickly and good in office hours. is friendly if sees that you try. a lot of homework, but also extra credit.
She is good at teaching but she moves very fast if you arent paying attention. Attendance is not taken but you will really benefit from going to class. She is very understanding and offers homework extensions when needed.
Great teacher and if stuck will extend due dates and help students. Made the class more enjoyable.
Oropesa is a pretty good teacher. Sometimes she goes a little fast, but if you ask her a question she'll slow down and explain it. Her tests are pretty easy if you do the homework. She also extends the deadline if you need it for the homework. She's so sweet and gives you lots of opportunities to boost your grade. Takes forever to grade.
Honestly a very good teacher. At times fast, but can be very thorough with her notes and lectures, which I think is important for calc. She gives a lot of homework (worth very little % of your grade, but you still need to do it). Also a lot of extra opportunities to raise your grade. The tests and quizzes are straight forward if you go to class.
She's just not a good teacher. Every time I ask her for explanations I leave feeling more confused. She is disorganized, changes the schedule a lot, and the exams are different from the material on the homework. This class is very trig heavy when it doesnt have to be. I would avoid her if possible.
Seems nice but lectures were so boring and confusing. Class structure seemed very unorganized (she was often late) and it was hard to stay awake. Homework was due at very inconvenient times like at midnight on a Thursday or Friday. Do not take if you struggle with math.
Offers a good amount of extra credit but also assigns a lot of homework so there isn't much time to do it. Very easy to zone out during lectures because she does all of the problems and rarely lets the students do them during class. Makes an effort to know everyone's name though and use it, which I appreciated
I took IB SL Math in high school, so coming in I didn't have too much background knowledge. Unless you took AP in high school, you'll have an extremely challenging experience with this class. Makes multiple mistakes every lecture, is confusing, and goes very fast (due to poor planning & just the dept). Had I not taught myself, I would've failed...
She makes things unnecessarily difficult and is super unorganized and boring. Doesn't really seem to care about students or their grades. As classes were moved online she failed to restructure her class, making tests extremely stressful and impractical. Do not take this class if you struggle with math.
I took her for calc 1 and 2 and she was a good teacher. It's a hard class but you can always go to her office hours and she will make sure she helps you.
Oropesa seems like a good person but she is not a good professor. She didn't really TEACH the material during her lectures, she just gave examples, so when it was time to do the homework you could only copy the solutions to her examples- which made the tests SO HARD. would not take her again. The only good thing is that she is very accessible.
Negative: Way too much homework for 3 credits. Ridiculously tough grader(too many points deducted for trivial, inconsequential omissions on correct answers). Positive: Tests are relatively short, and plenty of time provided.
strict.
The professor doesn't teach, she just solves exercises on zoom and expects you to know the stuff. She takes ages to correct exams and doesn't give you the grades before te final. There is at least one quiz each week. She wants to see the working on ALL THE EXERCISES in ALL QUIZZES and ALL EXAMS. Not for me
Horrendous class. on the first test, 4 out of 55 students got an A, and had the audacity to say "the test wasn't that hard" Horrible. Horrible. Homework takes 3-4 hours to do, and it's daily. The exams 90% of your grade.
She is very rude and not understanding. Horrible Person and avoid taking her at all costs! She will make your life miserable.
Avoid taking her at all costs. She never responds and really seems to hate her students.
Class is very boring. Professor gives a lot of homework, that impact your grade very little compared to how much work they demand. You won't learn much during her class, as she just works problems and does not explain well. For Dr. Oropesa's class, it's almost guaranteed that you will need to learn the material outside class.
I don't think she's a bad person. She is just horrible at being a prof. She is one of the nightmare prof you hear about. She's not receptive to feedback from her students. She has a "i don't care attitude" Very strict Grader. Teaches very fast, A LOT of homework & exams worth 90%. She should not be a prof. Do not take. This is Not an exaggeration.
AWFUL NOTHING ELSE TO SAY BUT A W F U L
I love professor Oropesa. She is a great professor and truly cares about her students. If you don't understand the material you need to go to her office hours and attend the review sessions it helped a lot. She really wants her students to succeed which is why she offers so many resources. Her class is hard but if you meet with her it is manageable
I would not have passed if I did not meet with her for extra help. I'm glad I took professor Oropesa because she always made time for me. The class moved very fast and the material is hard, so meet with her if you need to and go to reviews. If you think a grade is incorrect contest it bc she will change your grade if you give her a good reason.
Dr. Oropessa needs to find another profession because teaching is definitely not one of them. She teaches as if you already know the material. Theres entirely way too much homework assigned every week and majority of the problems you work on have nothing to do with what's on the exam. It's basically busy work. STAY AWAY FROM HER. Find another prof
Have never rated a professor before... trying to save you freshman before enrollment. She's incredibly condescending and the good reviews are coming from kids who are naturally good at math. Stay away, I had to drop the class despite having a tutor. The tests are intentionally harder than the class problems too. Just don't.
Was very scared for this class due to her RMP score, was very pleasantly surprised by how nice she was and how straight forward the class was. If you can do the homework without using photo math you will get above an 85 on every test. SIMPLE CLASS. NICE TEACHER.
I was scared going into this class due to her ratings but I was pleasantly surprised. She's a super sweet lady and is super good about helping you if youre confused in class. I already knew a lot of algebra so maybe that's why I liked her, I'm not sure how she teaches Calc. But either way if you're confused she'll help. One of the better MTH profs.
great professor, cares about students and makes time to give review sessions for students. Does great office hours. Very nice, cares about students, very fair grader.
Dr. Oropesa is a pretty straightforward Prof, if you go to class, pay attention and attend her review sessions you should be fine. It definitely is not an easy A, but math is hard for a lot of students so you cannot blame the Prof for your grade. Dr. Oropesa is a genuinely kind person and puts in effort for her students and explains math clearly.
Dr. Oropesa is the best! She is a great professor. The pace of the class was amazing. She isn't a tough grader and also sends things for extra credit. Really cares about students. If you dont understan something just go to office hours and she'll help you. If you do all the homework you'll be fine on the tests.
I went into this class nervous because of her reviews but I can honestly say I really enjoyed her class. She made math interesting and fun and I really learned a lot. Some people say she is too hard but if you go to the class and listen, everything will make sense and she actually takes the time to make sure everyone understands. LOVED HER!
She is very nice but at times frazzled. Class material is hard ngl. Offers lots of extra help sessions and sometimes extra credit. Drops many quizzes and lowest test grade. Quizzes are not proctored nor on lockdown browser. Exams are not too long but somewhat hard. Lots of hw but it does help for review. Ask nicely and she will most likely do it.
I have never once written a review like this, but I thought it was necessary to share my experience so others don't have to endure Dr. Oropesa as a teacher. In this class, you are left to fend for yourself. The lectures are very unorganized and not paced well to follow. She has no concern if you do well in her class.
Do not take her, find another professor. The worst teacher ever; does not care about her students. She expects everyone to know stuff before learning it and is rude when you don't know something. Horrible notes, and spams homework you didn't learn every night.
One of the best professors in the Department. She makes the material easy to understand and she is always happy to help. She is a very kind and understanding person.
Favorite math professor so far. I agree she can be a bit frazzled at times, but she doesn't mind going over things multiple times to help you understand. Tries very hard to help her students pass; drops quizzes, extra credit, & we even had a group quiz. A lot of homework but she gives extensions. Course itself is hard but she's a great professor
Her teaching style is great and review sessions are enough to succeed on the tests. Strongly recommend.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS - i saw the rating and still took it YOU WILL REGRET horrible teacher, doesn't care if you have learning disabilities, ABSURD AMOUNT OF HW. doesn't give partial credit for test. if you are reading these ratings thinking its dramatic ITS NOT. this class is horrific do not ignore the ratings. SWITCH PROFESSORS.
Not accessible outside of class, difficult to reach, overall rude when you point out her errors (which are frequent).
i was scared to take this professor but it wasn't as bad as expected. there is LOTS of homework and we rushed through a lot of lectures. i had to learn most concepts on my own. however, she's very caring and gives extra credit. she gave us lots of time and resources to prep for exams. she was fine for 101 but i wouldn't take for a harder math
As a business student, this class will be your worst nightmare. Oropesa knows that BUS students need a C- to remain in the business school and holds that over your head as a power/ god complex. Her grading is OUTLANDISH, and she will purposely try to fail you. 107 is 4 credits and TANKED my GPA. Blueprint perfect students still fail. DO NOT TAKE.
Awful. The entire format of the class is her doing problems on the board at her own pace, not explaining anything. She asks if there's any questions at the end, but it's impossible to keep track of the confusion because she does everything herself.
I usually hate math but she is so easy to understand and very clear. She cares about her students succeeding. She gives reviews before exams and asks what we have trouble on. She is super nice and easygoing. Also, yes, the class is a LOT of work but it's not her fault. It's a semester's worth of work in 4 weeks, that's just the layout of the class.
Despite her low rating, Dr. Oropesa is a good professor. Though the tests are very hard and she admittedly grades harshly, if you put the work in, you'll get a decent grade. She also tells you exactly what she expects and makes study guides that are 1:1 of the actual tests. The only people who really complain about her are the ones who don't try.
She specifically states in her faculty info that email is the best way to reach her, but she never once has emailed me back when I have been in dire situations, such as not being able to access a quiz when there are not makeups. While she provides you with the material you need to succeed she just isn't the nicest person and terrible communicator.
This class was challenging, but with the help of resources like Unstuck ai, I was able to navigate it successfully. The professor can be tough but is caring and provides extra credit opportunities. Staying on top of the heavy workload is key.
Made the topics really easy to understand.
The worst prof I've had at UM. Both as a prof and as a person, she is the absolute worst. She doesn't care about anything but her. She failed our entire class because she couldn't make it to final exam herself. Take this class if you wanna end up with a Withdrawn
She doesn't care about you at all and isn't willing to work and communicate with you. She doesn't do anything she says she is going to do or at least in the time frame she says. Save yourself a couple dozen mental breakdowns and find a different professor. The fact that she works at UM which has a great academic/expensive reputation is ridiculous.
She is the worst professor Ive ever had. And she is supposed to be the department chair. She has bad faith
she hates students
I hated this class. I tried so hard, showed up to every class (4 days a week), took notes on everything, sat in the front, asked questions, and I still sucked. Took a HARDER math the next semester, did way better, thrived, succeeded, got an A. Blaming the teacher. (i even took precalc in high school and received an A)
do not take this class.
tbh I never enjoyed math like that before. She is very nice and approachable and explains everything super easy. Tests weren't so bad and mostly based on the review files and homework
If you actually put in effort and are a proactive student, she is not a bad teacher. Her lectures are very straightforward, and she makes the notes for you, outlining exactly what you need to do for each exam. There are practice exams, and she does reviews. Just go to her office hours, she will sit down and review anything you need and be thorough.
Zooms through all the concepts and units with barely anytime for questions. Very approachable though and willing to help during office hours but take at your own risk. If you aren't super good at math, her teaching style isn't for you.
do not take her
So classless and disrespectful. She acts as if she runs the entire university, and her frustration shows in the way she treats students. Interactions with her feel dismissive and unprofessional, and it creates a really negative learning environment.
