Only two tests and one final that make up almost entire grade. Hard tests... most average about 60%
lectures about proofs instead of examples. difficult tests

Tests are hard. Though he lectures about proofs he goes through HW examples everyday in class, and he is very funny
Sucks a lot at explaining things. And he wears the same pair of pants every day.
Tests don't add up with the material learned in class. You learn the non-test material well though.
1st test has proofs
Both names end in v thereby making him the COOLEST professor EVER.
He is a really good teacher. Does show proofs, which I think are most important. You learn why something works and then apply it yourself. He takes ?s, goes over HW problems, and tests are meant to be hard. Averages on tests are about 55, so they're curved. If you did well in 221/222, you'll be fine
Dont take his class, especially if you want to stay in Madison.
If you are extremely gifted in math you'll lock an A for sure, but if not good luck because his tests are ridiculous.
He seems like a nice guy, but his teaching is hard to understand, and his tests are ridiculously hard.
Good teacher that allows students to ask questions at start of class and then goes through any ones that are asked. Very hard tests however
The class is hard, and the tests are 100 times harder. He does a good job explaining things though. A little dry, but I don't fall asleep. Make sure you make it to every lecture or you can kiss a passing grade goodbye.
Difficult class, but isn't too hard to do well if you do the work and come to class prepared to know what's going on. Lectures will only supplement your own work and answer questions you'll have, but you wont be able to pass by just going to lecture.
You MUST go to lecture. He follows the book but has his own very unique way of teaching material, he uses different notation from the book and uses his notation on exams. The exams are EXTREMELY difficult averages were between 20 and 30%, he's hard but you'll learn a lot.
If you do your homework and understand everything but the last question or two of each assignment you should be fine. as people have said, tests are incredibly hard, but since everyone does bad, it's easy to raise your grade if you try hard. Got a A in the class after getting a 17 on the first test
Tough exams, but not the worst teacher ever.
His exams are very difficult, but if you are good at beating the curve you can get an A. If you are the type of student that relies on studying hard and memorizing straight-forward formulas to earn good grades, avoid Lev at all costs.
This guy is a genius. He doesn't give out much homework. Spends the first 15 minutes of class answering questions about the homework and going through the problems on the board. But Math 222 isn't the most failed and dropped class in the university for nothing. Some of this stuff just seems to be impossible to understand.

He's pretty clear about everything. As he lectures, he stops and gives you a moment to think and asks for any questions. He also takes a lot of time before class to answer questions about homework. The exams are hard though. He doesn't write it so its similar to the homework; instead he throws in a lot of twists to make it harder.
He is pretty good about answering your questions and isn't too boring. His tests are impossible though. Even if you do all of the homework, odds are that you will still fail the tests. If it wasn't for my bomb-ass TA Tete, I would have failed the class.
Really good lecturer. Likes to be inturrupted during lecture with questions if you dont understand. Gives you time in between examples for you to look it over to make sure you understand it. Only gives odd-numbered homework problems so the answers are always in the manual if you get stuck on a problem.
Dude's tests are impossibly hard
This guy is hard; no matter how well you understand the material, he'll find a way to throw in a monkey wrench. To do well in his class requires that you must have a very, very clear understanding of the concepts and material. Be prepared to recieve low scores if you are not a math genius.
Extremely difficult, but so is any 222 class (all the horror stories are true).I'd suggest taking 222 at tech school in summer, like MATC. Lecture is rediculous... the guys a genious so skips "easy" steps and assumes you catch up and is all over the place on his boards. SIGN UP FOR SMALL GROUP TUTORING IMMEDIATELY- it dumbs it down perfectly
Very good teacher, gets accross the concepts very well, even though it's hard material, and he's funny. The tests are hard but not impossible to get an A
Considering the difficulty of the material, I think Lev does as good of a job as is possible. Most importantly, he actually cares if his students understand. He's also a funny guy, joking about Russia and tying the microphone around his head for a full lecture.
I absolutely adore Lev! He makes the class really fun; I never go a lecture without smiling. The material is tough, as are the exams, but he doesn't through anything on exams that haven't been covered through lecture or homework. He is very funny and very helpful. He always gives time to "digest" what he taught, and always answers questions.
Very difficult material, and the lectures are almost useless. Borisov is a genious, but he doesn't do a very good job of explaining things. He skips over shortcuts and covers unnessisary material. IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS, GET A TUTOR (or join a study group)! His test are insanely difficult. The average on the first exam was 30%
He is horrible, don't take him at all costs. He starts with the hardest chapter, so you will be insanely lost for the first couple of months. He lectures on proofs and how equations work, but you don't have to know any of it: a waste of time. If you do end up in his class, get yourself into a math tutorial as soon as you can, it works a lot.
He takes a lot of crap for being too hard, but the material is difficult and I think he presents it well. Averages are usually low on exams, but the class is on a curve, so it's definately not too difficult to get at least a B in the class.
Not saying he's a great teacher, but he's better than most of the other math professors, i recommend him :/ He sticks to the material - so you know what you have to learn - but sometimes he doesn't explain things very well.. part of that is because the material is hard but if you study enough and get a good TA you'll be OK.. he is a funny man ;)
Review? What review? Unfortunately, we DO need some steeking review, and we get twelve questions that are supposed to span a semester. Ignores the basis, does nothing but blaze through complex problems minus explination. Great if you're majoring in math, or if you've flunked the course once before, I'm sure. Test =/= covered material.
Once you get around the accent, he's really funny and makes lectures interesting. Helps a lot if you keep up in the book outside of his lectures, as sometimes it seems the book has better/easier techniques to use. Exams can be hard (near impossible) but the curve evens things out. TA will make the bigger difference, don't take it out on Lev.
tough exams, but he curves them
VERY INTELLIGENT. Yet there is a problem... his grasp of the students' abilities! His tests are extremely challenging. However, the T.A.'s make up for this. You should definitely switch your schedule around until you get a good T.A. Despite the faults, I really reccomend this class. Lev is funny and you learn a lot.
A clever little trick of Borisov's: AFTER all the student's evaluations have been turned in, THEN he cancels all of his office hours for the two weeks prior to his final. His "Review" is a series of 20 problems from the book which may or may not be on the exam, in his words, and he gives us no chance to go over them with him. AVODI AT ALL COSTS.
man, i love lev. he is hilarious. i personally love his communist jokes. he did a good job explaining the material. and i enjoyed going to lecture. his tests are kinda difficult, but it's got a major cuve cuz no one else can do the questions. it was a good class. TA made everything wonderful as well.
1.Anybody knows when the grades are going to be up, I am getting a little impatient. 2. Very smart man, had a gold medal in int'l math comp; good lecturer if you want to challenge yourself. I saw a lot of kids suffering so wouldn't recommend for genral public. No math major can go without him though.
His exams were tricky but not necessarily difficult. The most entertaining lecturer I have had at this university, was so completely absorbed my his subject. Brilliant and very willing to answer questions. Started each lecture by going over homework, and always gave time to think about what he was saying. A great prof. It is possible to get and A.
The professor was a hilarious, I hate going to class, but that class did not seem like a chore to go to. The class is very difficult, staying in the whole weekend and studying for those tests would not be enough. He sparked an interest in math for me though, very hard, but possible to pass.
His exams really discouraged people, seeing as the averages were in the thirties...it made you feel like you were lost when in reality the exams were just a little too hard for the material covered. Doing homework is helpful for the quizes, but are not the best practice for the exams.
Lev is a prof you hate at the time, but miss later when you realize how good of a lecturer he is. Tests are discouraging, but the curve at the end is worth the effort.
Lev is the best math teacher Ive ever had. He takes homework questions in class and has no problem re-explaining even the simplest concepts so he makes sure everyone who wants to ask can ask anything. If youre taking 222, you want lev. Plus he makes a lot of funny russian jokes
i miss lev. he's a great guy and a good lecturer for the material but exams are terrible. my friend almost cried when he got a 44 (i got a 48) on his first UW exam then found the average was 41.6. to do well, you need to respect the effort needed for this course. do hw, study as you go, ask questions. this is it, 234 is cake by comparison
He is very good at explaining the material and he makes sure everyone understands it. His exams are very hard though. He always puts in at least one "tricky" problem that is really an "impossible" problem, but if you pay attention and do the HW you will be above the average on the exams.
His exams and things were very difficult, but they were difficult for most people. He helps out as much as possible. Really knows his stuff.
Lev is amazing. While in class it seems hard but he's actually funny and is very willing to answer questions in class. His tests can be really hard but it seems they are getting easier as he realizes this. Everyone I know loves him.
Everyone said not to take Borisov, but I think he is a good professor. Tests are really hard, but he curves by discussion section. So, if you get a****ty TA and you study and do homework and stuff you will more then likely do very well.
Lev's really a great guy, and a professor that expects a lot out of you, but if you try hard, you'll really learn a lot. Like everyone says, his tests are hard, but the curve solves that problem. He doesn't just go by the book all the time, which makes lectures worthwhile and necessary.
So sexy. Wow. Pretty hard tests, but there's a nice curve so it evens out. I found him a competent teacher.
Lev's lectures are informative and he takes the time to go over homework problems and stops to answer questions. However, his exams are very, very difficult, so if you do a problem incorrectly, expect a 0/20. If you survive Lev, Calc 234 seems easy.
likes to give very hard tests
A very hard class with insanely hard tests. I had him for 222 also, so I knew what I was getting into. He's a very good teacher, and knows the material extremely well. I would take more classes from him if I could, because he really challenges you and expects alot from you. Curves will help you alot. Not a good professor for lazy kids.
My favorite math professor. His lectures are very important because he will give you the tools you will need on the exams. If you only work the problems from the book, (which you should do a lot of), the test questions may surprise you. But keep cool and know that if you get above a 50% on a test, that'll be atleast a B.
not very helpful
He's not bad at all for a calc prof, doesnt assign homework, if you do the review assignments you will be prepared for the midterms (3 + a final)
Borisov is a good guy and an overall good professor. It is obvious that he wants to help his students. However, a lot of material is covered, so he goes through it rather quickly. If you have a good handle on math, you will be fine. Make sure to study; exams are difficult.
Exams are really hard and not enough time is given. Only 2 exams and one final...bascially you are screwed up if you don't do well on the exams!!
His exams can be tough but not unbearable. If you do a lot of practice problems, you should be fine. He doesn't collect homework, so your grade is solely on the three exams, and quizzes during discussion.
Lev was awesome. He actually taught me things during lecture, unlike a lot of the math department. The only thing is that the material is hard. As long as you try you can do well. I loved Lev. I will look for classes that Lev teaches because he is the man.
Professor Borisov is so far my favorite professor. His lectures are easy to pay attention to, and he gets his points across easily. Exams are not necessarily easy, but if you do and understand the homework, it's not too bad. I would highly recommend Professor Borisov. The class isn't too hard, but don't fall behind on the homework.
Lev is a great professor, one of the better math teachers at the UW. He is easygoing and lectures are easy to follow. He does a great job of explaining the material and is open to questions from students. The material is difficult as well as the exams. If you do the homework and attend lecture, you should be fine.
Borisov did an excellent job teaching the material clearly. His exams weren't as hard as they have been in the past but you must be carful to stay on top of the material. Grade is only determined by three exams and a discussion grade so don't mess up on any of the exams.
Borisov is an excellent lecturer. He explains things very well and does lots of examples. He also does a HW problem from the previous days assignment at the start of each lecture. Tests are fair and curved. He always has one tough question that only a handful of people answer correctly. Easy B or C
I thought Borisov was a great professor. He is very thorough in lecture and answers any homework questions in class. Some may think he goes quickly but he will stop to answer questions and/or re-explain if there is confusion. And on top of that, he is very entertaining during lecture. Do the homework and you wont have a problem.
Borisov is so far the best math teacher I have had. He is very clear and quickly gets to the point. Tests were on the tough side, but fair. Study hard and you can learn a lot from him!
he shows lots of thrms but not as many examples as he should...and when he does, he picks hard ones. doesnt really pick the easy way of doing things
Absolutely impossible. I got a 2% on the first exam (the class average was a 29%). AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Overall an okay professor. I don't think he realizes how much the students actually understand the material, exams are hard. First exam average was a 33%. He has a pretty generous curve, doing about average will get you a BC, maybe B.
Very, very, very hard professor. His main occupation is Algebraic Geometry and research in that area. He is a very analytical professor, and yet he does a good job of protraying information in a way that we can understand. Like the other posts, first midterm averaged a 29%, but the second was like a 78% so he scaled it knowing we did bad. . .
Got a 46% on the first midterm (~30% was the average). But to rebound, the second midterm was far easier (~79% average). Knowing how hard I could expect tests to be, I feaked out and studied nonstop for 3 days straight and pulled a 99% on the second test. This class IS doable! Weekly quizzes are very helpful. Do NOT underestimate this class!!
I absolutely hate this class. I have always been good at math, I got a 5 on the AP calc exam, but this class is horrible. I got a 22% on the first midterm (class average was like a 31%), and then on the second midterm I got a 42% (class average was a 79%). I feel like I understand the material in the book, he just makes tests so hard and crazy.
Gotta love Borisov, yeah the class is tough, but it's curved the same as all other classes
What can I say, the guys a freaking genius. Anyone who takes his class can agree on that. Crystal clear descriptions, but admittedly moves fast in lectures but will stop at any moment to answer a question. READ the chapter before hand so that you can follow him. Very difficult tests but I still was easily above the curve. A is possible but difficul
GREAT professor. Moves fast, but stops for any single question. Knows the material. Lecture attendance is a MUST, but he has humorous tendencies and his speed makes paying attention easy. Hard tests, but if you read and go to lecture you'll do fine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Great teacher, really hard class. He made lecture as interesting as math can be, and he has a nice accent (it takes some getting used to though). Lev will challenge his students. He likes to use exam problems most people won't solve, but he is very helpful. Take advantage of office hours!!
Just received my letter grade. A C. I did above average on everything except the first midterm by 2 points and the Final I tanked and I got a C. Yes he curves, but it's a brutal curve. I think roughly 60% of the class has a BC or lower according to my TA. That's ridiculous. . .
Class was hard, but not rediculously hard. I got a 26 on the first midterm (ave. was 29) and i got a 46 on the second test (ave was 79). and i got these without studying. so i studied for the final and pulled off a C in the class. so its not terribly difficult. Overall, Lev is a pretty good teacher
Great professor! take his class for sure
Very funny and very fascinating to listen to. Ridiculously intelligent in the math field. Did insane calculations in his head. Only resorted to his laptop to write down the example problems he was going to do. Very hard class but doable. Except the series part which was just hell. Do a lot of the past exams to study and you'll be fine.
Math 22 is a hard class. You cant blame borisov for that. I guerentee that you will learn more from him than anyon else. He is an incredable teacher!
