Great Prof! Take him!
He is my best teacherl!
He is the best overall
Hard final
intimidating/in your face teaching. Softy on the inside. Watch his finals.
I miss him....
Best math teacher I ever had
Awesome teacher, take him for sure! He knows his stuff!
Lev is the man!! He always makes sure that everyone understands before moving on

cool guy but bad teacher
have never heard a single bad thing, good notes, interesting and nice
One of the rare few who does care!
He's a bad teacher. He's very impatient and never let you finish your talk. An arrogant person who's from Russia. Maybe his lecture is ok,but he's not a kind guy at all.
sO SO HOT with his little Russian accent, and Math192 has never been so much fun. He's just adorable and I'd recommend him to ANYONE!

The man could explain rocket science to a potato and has tons of patience

Down to earth and smart. He's really available and helpful. Lev is fabulous, the best ever at MUC
makes sure you understand before moving on. never had a teacher quite like him
An exellent prof! Makes math clear, concise, but fun and enjoyoable!
MY favorite pro in Mala.cute looking, funny jokes. he makes me like math a lot!But i still don't know how to pronounce his last name
Funny accent; to him a "Matrix" is pronounced somewhat like "Mattress".
a real good teacher makes his class very interesting & comes up with amazingly funny sarcastic jokes
I found he was very negative and constantly made you feel slow and stupid. A hard test marker to, no marks if you get the answer right, not even part marks for doing the question. You gotta know this stuff inside out or this is not the class for you.
the best math teacher i ever had, very clear and very patient. his class is so much fun...
No good.
Just plain ignorant!
One of the best math teacher, Really easy to understand & very clear

He is my best teacher I ever got
Super friendly and good teacher. I learned a lot in his class. He expects a lot from his students.
The best teacher I've ever had at university for an engineering program. He is an extremely fair examiner, very lenient on grading, he teaches everything he tests on, and makes sure of your understanding. If you get less then an A its your own damn fault!
Very good. He has the best sense of humour!
very clear and willing to help. great guy. listen to get his jokes-some are pretty funny. he really seems to care that students learn the material, especially if you show an interest and try
YES!!! ah ha~Good FOR U!!!!
One of the best math teachers i've ever had. If you do the work and pretests, you'll ace every test
reall knows differential equations thats for sure. good teacher, funny and uses good examples but dont fall behind in studying for tests cause they can have a trick or two. famous quote "you are one MILLION percent right"
russian, knows his math and also a good prof
One of the best math teachers ever! awesome! should definantly teach 122
This class was so hard, and he can be a jerk. Be able to stick up for yourself, or he will eat you alive, especially first years. His tests are so long, and super difficult, you will not get a good mark.
This guy is one solid Prof, his russian gruff adds characture, and dont get to scared. "Now do you see my friend?"
This guy is amazing! Act like you are interested and he will help you if you are struggling. Piss him off, and he'll make fun of you in front of the whole class. Seriousely this is my favorite teacher @ Malaspina :):):) good stuff LEV!!!
Lev is my fav teacher at mal, he makes sense, answers any questions students have, and he's always cracking jokes (often makes fun of really annoying people). His tests are really easy if you study what he tells you to..i got over 100% in his 121 and im not usually eve good at math..Lev is THE****!
Best teacher ever!! Lev rocks! This guy is a pure genius, and it really shows in his teaching. He goes through the material at a rapid pace, but at the same time he makes sure that everybody understands the concepts. If not, he is very helpful in his office hours and he really makes learning math enjoyable.
Nice guy, great sense of humor. Goes through material at lightning speed, has very tough exams. See him during office hours if you have problems, he won't go as fast. You probably won't get the greatest grade with him as opposed to other profs, but you will get a better understanding of the material. WATCH OUT FOR THE FINAL!!!
The worst person I have EVER met. He is rude and cruel. I would never ever want to see him ever again, he is such a horrible person.
Alright teacher. Says highschool teachers cannot teach Calculus, which is not true. Has a bit of a sense of humour. All we do is notes, math excercies, and 4 chapter tests. Pretty fast-paced.
he is not very discreet with telling you why you are doing a problem wrong so that the whole class can here
Unreal Prof - Hails from mother russia - hilarious - doesn`t tolerate any nonsense in class - insensitive - no breaks, zis iz masematics!
Like everyone says, he's an incredibly funny guy! Teaches quite well. Midterms are kind of tough but just as hard if not easier than any other teacher for this course. Highly recommended!!!
fantastic teacher - made calculus fun. he taught clearly and his exams were very fair , straight from the homework
He is a very good prof; his lectures are clear, and he would reply within an hour at worst by email if you emailed him a question. Definitely a great prof - one of the best @MUC!

Not for the faint of heart! "We're university students, we're supposed to work like slaves!" He's fast paced, inclusive and engaging but you can fall behind easy. He will make the extra effort to help you understand. His tests are just as tough as the course but fair and the guy is hilarious! I'd take him again no question.
Very helpful, always makes sure everyone understands what he wrote on the board, insist that students ask him questions in class. he started the course with sequences and series, makes more sense if you read ahead of class and know your integration and differentiation techniques really well! tests are easier if you did your assignments well.
Im taking his class right now and am enjoying it. He is very helpful and always makes sure you understand, but you must ask questions otherwise you'll have a hard time. He is fast paced but will slow down if a student is having a problems. The more questions asked the slower he will go. I recommend taking his class, specially if you're good at math
Avoid avoid avoid. Great person, not great teacher. Knows his stuff, but on purpose puts trick questions on tests which have not been assigned for homework or review and talked about once for a small portion of a class.
Lev was a wonderful Prof, at first hard to understand, and very fast paced. As long as you ask questions you'll do well. Math is far from my strong suit, but he lays it out so you can understand, crack jokes, and seems to genuinely cares about wether or not you're following him.
Goes incredibly fast keep up. He is easily annoyed and gets upset if you ask too many questions or don't understand. Not a very good prof
The gatekeeper. Very tough, however I do recommend you take his course. Will ensure you learn the material. Yes he does put on some tough questions on tests and pick on students sometimes but if you get through it should have no problems with future calculus.
He's really funny and straight to the point
Fantastic at describing concepts. Hilarious! Never dwells on one topic, always introduces new ideas every example. Merciless at minor mistakes (1+13) Dont make minor mistakes.
Very good prof. He's very helpful, makes math a lot of fun! I definitely would recommend him in a heartbeat. He does seem intimidating but don't let that stop you from asking questions.
Hard to understand and is very unclear with things will just teach you examples of whats on the test and then throw a messed up final at you that we barely even covered
Can be hard to understand, and is very picky about certain things. Always read his questions carefully and make sure to follow his direct instructions. Should be an easy A.
I have complained about this teacher to student services and was encouraged to make a human rights complaint. He's verbally abusive to his class. End of story. "It's easy! You can't do it? You're too slow!" "Go back to upgrading" "You can't do (insert thing)? WOOOOOOOW" Calls on students without hands up and then shames them for not knowing answer
Lev is a great instructor. He showed us every day how much he cares. I really enjoyed taking this class.
Prof. Lev was amazing! He moved at a fast pace sometimes but always slowed down and clarified when needed. He made math interesting, which I always thought was hard to do!
He proves and explains concepts with math and does not use examples or comparisons to help understanding. He also has trouble communicating in English and may or may not understand your questions. He can show you how to do something but does not explain what it is you are doing.
His knowledge is infinity
He is definitely a fun professor -- if you have a thick skin. His tests can be brutal, so do the homework he suggests. It may be good to take a high school level calc course before attempting his for optimal results. Slept through many of his classes, would not suggest for non-engineering/maths students.
After taking a math class with Lev, I now avoid classes with him like the plague. As another commenter mentioned, he explains math with more math. Be prepared for notes full of equations and numeral examples, but with no written summaries or explanations. If you are not naturally very strong at math , I would highly suggest avoiding Lev.
This guy taught me be tough and work hard.
Lev expects you have read the text ahead of the lecture. He's going to move fast, if you haven't done the reading you won't be able to keep up. He's kind of goofy and there is a lot of humor behind his "NoooOOOoooOOoo". Put your phone away or he'll call you on it. It's hard work, but well worth the effort to have Lev
Lev teaches in a very practical way, it takes some time to get used to, but once you click with how he teaches, it becomes a lot easier to follow along in class. He does tend to explain math with more math, and he will try and answer almost every question, but he doesn't always finish it or explain it super clearly. I recommend reading the textbook
Lev is one of my favorite instructors at VIU. His lectures are straight to the point and he teaches you exactly what you need to know. He is also hilarious and very available for questions over email.
Lev is one of my favorite teachers at VIU. His lectures are straight to the point and he teaches you exactly what you need to know. He is also hilarious and very available for questions over email.
Very intense and is way to upfront and confrontational with students. He does care about learning which is good but if you need any extra help, avoid his class.
I used to hate calculus. I have taken and failed it before, and it never clicked for me. Lev helped me understand. He focused on the important formulas, and laid things out it a much more simplified and manageable way. He has some banter that I think some students take personally, but I thought he was hilarious, entertaining and engaging.
I took a course in linear algebra and learned a valuable life lesson: life is better when you avoid verbally abusive people.
My advice to this student. Draw an extra lessons for life: probably, I am a loser, but I found it now in this class.
Amazing teacher. Really funny and very sweet. He always has a story to tell. Cutest old man. He makes class fun and fast and easy!!
Seemed unprepared for lectures. Would often make minor mistakes, which in and of itself is no big deal, but then he'd spend a significant amount of time reworking out the problem on the board by himself without referring to lecture notes. Several lectures seemed like an unprepared chaotic mess where the main points were not made clear.
Honestly one of the best teachers I have had in my years at VIU. He heavily focuses on conceptual understanding for his students, always open for questions and discussion in class. He emphasizes problem solving so that students fully understand the concept and are not blindsided by the exams. Best when it comes to justifying grades on exams!
He knows what he's talking about, but he chooses a very aggressive way of talking to students. He tries to answer all questions but would often answer like 7 other unasked questions before getting to the point. He's funny but it's unnecessarily stressful being in the same room as him.
Lev Idels was one of the most knowledgeable and inspiring mathematics professors at VIU. His retirement has left a noticeable gap — math at VIU now feels a little too simple without him!
