Straightforward, will tell you what's in his tests which are of reasonable difficulty (not hard, not easy). If you are willing to go up to him and ask for help, he'll do his best. Serious guy, but you really learn the material from him.
Great teacher. He really explains everything very well. He doesn't just copy the example problems from the book when lecturing *gasp* unlike other teachers. If this guy teachers any Math section that you're consdering, take him.
I really liked his class. He is an excellent teacher, very clear. His test and grading are really fair. He is also really nice.
The best. If you come to class and pay attention, you can't fail. Lev makes math easy to learn. He's a serious guy and his tests are a little hard, but he gives a full outline ahead of time. An interesting character, too.
He is one of the best math teachers at ccsf. He wants all of his student to do well. He is very clear and makes math understandable. His test are easy if you study. Hes such a nice guy and willing to help his student succeed.
i took his class in the summer, and even though it was for a short amount of time, he helped me a lot. for goodness sakes, i understood word problems! don't be scared with his appearance though. he's pretty serious, but a really nice guy!
(Int. Algebra) Totally cured my math phobia! He is very stoic - scared most of the class but is very funny once you "get" him. One of the best teachers I've ever had, no joke. Math made sense for the first time in my life. Made an "A" on every test - just do the homework & it all comes together.
He's a really serious but nice teacher. He takes rolls everyday, he won't give you any make-up test. But he tells you exactly what's going to be on the test and if you did you homework, I think you'll past with no questions.
tells you what will be on the test. Open book on test, finals. A little cofusing to understand the teaching at times. No make up.no homework to turn in. Take roll everyday. No tardiness allowed. Answers all questions everyday.
Good teacher. Expects his students to be as smart as him. Has an accent, so his lecture is quite hard to understand. Other than that, he is very nice. Tests and final are easy as we can open books. No need to memorize formulas. No homework collection.
I took his class last semester, he took everything seriesly and he explained everything clearly. I ended up with an A,and I did learn a lot about Math. He gave the questions that would be on the tests. I highly recommand you guy take him.
bad bad teacher
Although I got an A at his class, that really took me a lot of effort. He's a teacher full of knowledge, but he seems not welcome to ask questions. His lecture is clear and he didn't collect homework, but his tests are hard. If you're trying to get a A, you'd better think about it.
HE IS SUM WHAT STRICT AND VERY BORING. A LOT OF NOTE TAKING. HE HAS A FAT RUSSIAN ACCENT, SO ITS KIND OF DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HIM AT TYMS. MAKE SMART REMARTS AND COMMENTS IF U DONT PAY ATTENTION. DOESNT COLLECT HOMEWORK BUT LETS U KNO WUTS GNA B ON TEST. DOESNT LIKE PEOPLE CUMIN LATE TO CLASS... IF YOU REALLY PAY ATTENTION YOU WILL PASS THE CLAS
Great teacher, but not warm and fuzzy. If you can stick it out past the drop date it gets easier. He will do all he can to answer questions and give you the info you need for the test, but the tests are hard.
dont miss class and even though he may come out as a strict teacher he really just wants you to learn. i wish he also taught MATH 90.
HIS TESTS ARE HARD
I took this class a few semester ago and got an A in it. I did not put much efforts because I had already known those "stuff". I would like to share with you guys. If you think calculas is hard but you have to take it, take him is your best choice. You can use what ever kinds of calculators. The best one is the Ti-89. If you know how to use it!!!!!
Calls roll exactly 10 mins after class starts, If your name is called and your not there your marked absence, THERE IS NO COMING LATE! If you have 5 consecutive absences your dropped from the class - 10 overall your dropped. He does not collect HW. There are 7 tests and a final. He drops the lowest score except final. Pretty easy class
THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY: Cantankerous old coot that works himself into a frothy lather of anger over errors students have commited in the past, or may make in the future regardless of what's going on in the present. Ill natured hold over from the Stalinist error (used to be in the russian army). Expect merciless public humitiation for asking
Good teacher, he has his own style....you can not late for his class, you have to answer his question, you must study and practice and you can get a B grade or higher. You can drop the worst exam you have had and you may have extra credit--> Ask him questions in the class and answer his questions...group study is good to get a higher grade

I feel betrayed by the other comments on here. This teachers is horrible. Rude, unprepared, uninspiring, and a horrible attitude. I could go on. This may be specific to his calc class, but all he does is regurgitate from the book and get pissed off that you don't already know the info. My fellow student, do NOT take this teacher!!
He is the worst...you guys are liars.....
oh my god..i made a big mistake to take him...he is not iterested in teaching calculus...he is mad all the time...if you r late 10 seconds after the 10 min, he will mark u absent...his questions on the tests r very very hard...some of them are not from the book...if u already took him,i feel sorry about u..
THE WOREST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD.
honestly, he's a pretty good teacher. he knows what he's talking about, but sometimes people ask questions and he misunderstands the question and he gets frustrated. He allows you to use your notes and the book during his tests, so take good notes and you will pass the class no problem. if you dont pass, there is clearly a problem...
He's a good teacher if you don't like to focus on lecture but focus on problems and exercises. He's just more than glad to answer your questions that you write on the board before the class begin.
scary looking guy. very thick russian accent, difficult to understand. knows the material, but doesn't explain it very well. Tests are pretty hard. he smokes lots of cigarettes.
He wasn't that bad of a teacher, he has a HUGE accent. At first, I was like WTF, but it one day you walk in and you just understand him. He is very knowledgable. I WOULD take him again for a different math class. I think he grades a bit tough though, but hey! I passed! =)
To be perfectly honest, he is a teacher that grades your test HARSHLY and the test is definetly NO CAKE WALK. I would reccomend taking another teacher. He is knowledgeable but does not take the time to explain things and make the class feel comfortable with the material. He makes asking questions very hard for students to do(makes them feel uneasy)
Difficult. He doesn't teach well, leaving you to know the material. Plus, on the test, you have to know things he didnt teach you. And you have to be there by the 10 of the hour. Just difficult. Next.
he didn't grade so harsh on tests..many times i thought i got a c, but it turns out to be an A- :) one thing funny about him is that he always say: "yes or no, then go on say YES" i mean if students don't reply yes, that means most of us don't get it..and the answer should be NO...overall, i think he is doing his job the right way.
Those previous statements are completely false. He is one of the best math teachers I've had. He explains everything thoroughly and is always willing to help any students with questions. His tests are challenging but he goes over everything in his lectures. Take good notes, practice and you'll do fine in his class.
He seems to mean well, but his teaching style and use of the book does not make sense. he teaches the class like the students like they are in higher level class that leads too way too much confusion. you are better off just learning from the book since his lectures are useless.
He's not as bad as the other comments said. he's actually good, although sometimes he goes to fast. I took his class in Summer 07.as long as you attend his class, take notes, and do the homework, you won't have much trouble. he tells you what would be on the test and they are mostly your homework problems.do your work, you'll be ok.
Even though I ended up with an A in his class, he was somewhat hard to understand. He mainly grades on how well you do on your tests, but doesn't grade your homework (it is reccommended to do the homework because it will help you do well on your tests). Other then that, he's a decent teacher, and only reccommend him if you want a challenging class.
He's an awesome teacher, just a little hard to understand at times. He explains things thoroughly. All you have to do is pay attention and take good notes. You don't ever have to do hw unless there's something you don't understand. Just try a couple of them and you'll be fine. He tells you what kinds of problems are on the test so it's very helpful
he doesn't teach you shortcuts because he believes that if you learn the hard way, you'll understand everything else better.
he is difficult to understand sometimes. he seems to get mad when he's asked questions.
boring lectures. i never opened my book but he tells what is on the test. he has favoritism which sucks a lot. but overall pretty easy class.
He is a horrible teacher, my first grade teacher can teach better than him. I swear, he WANTS his students to fail. Last test, everyone either failed or barely passed.
Don't take his class! His accent is terrible; I knew nothing from his lecture. His character is also the problems. Don't, again, Don't take his class if you want to get 'A'.
He looks at you and ask you "yes or no". If you don't understand say no, he actually stops in the middle of the problem to explain what you don't get or sometimes even go back to the previous problem for you. He seem intimidating but really, he isn't.Therefore, any question should be asked otherwise you will be lost in that class.
Hes not the bad of a teacher. He looks mean, but hes not at all. All test including the final are grade equal there is no curve and homework is not graded. He can be a bit hard at times. Hes the perfect teach if you just want examples and no homework due. The Final is graded as just a test and he drops your lowest score.
Prof V is a serious & smart math teacher. He really wants you to get it, not just pass the class. He drops 1 exam and lets you use your notes/book on test. He doesn't like giving partial credit, so if you're not close to the right answer, you'll get something like 3/10. He expects you to pay full attention and doesn't like to repeat simple things.
Want to learn math from a world-class master mathematician? Then you will appreciate Professor Vayngortin. His clarity and precise methods will serve you well if you are willing to commit them to memory. He expects you to keep up, participate in class, and ask ALL of your questions, which he gladly answers each day at the start of class.
Homework not mandatory but helpful if you want to do well on tests. Ask hw questions at beginning of class. Make sure you know how to do problems he went over in class. No extra credit, fair partial credit on tests, and although he says he doesn't curve, he probably does since almost everyone "failed" the final. If you work hard, you will pass.
I believe he is one of the best math instructors in city college. But definitely the best for calculus. He totally know what he is talking about, he answers questions, and his tests are fair. He also doesn't make you memorize all the useless formulas; you can simply open your notebook during tests!!..highly recommended
Prof. Vayngortin deeply cares about his students. He does everything possible and beyond to help students understand material. His explanations are crystal clear. But if you are not serious about math, think twice. His class isn't an easy A.
QUIET! He speaks very low.
Professor Vayngortin is SERIOUS about calculus and he expects you to be serious about it as well. His goal is to get you ready for more difficult classes you may take at another school and he does it well. He doesn't like it if you're late or lazy. Also, he had a bone-dry sense of humor that I think is awesome, but some may find off-putting.
very Clear explanation! Not really easy to get an A in his class but you will learn a lot in calculus if you take him. i hope he will teach 110B next semester but he doesn't :(. Anyway, take his class and you can see how interesting calculus is
takes one two days to explain each new section. comes up with his own problems and then takes some out of the book. he doesnt collect homework but if you want to pass the test you should do it on your own. open to any questions and the test questions are similar to what is shown in class.seems intmidating but is really nice. no b.s kind of guy
boring teaching but easy grading i got an A in his class
no word of advice run!! Dont take his class i know the materials but the way he teaches make me feel like its a foreign concept hard to understand his accent DONT TAKE HIM
I wish he was teaching 110B this sem. My current teacher's lec are confusing and I really want to drop it. I like that his lec are very uniform, he won't let people distract his lec w/off topic q's. He always asked if everyone understands, if not he would explain agian. Loved him!
He is so boring,,,at the first day of class, he is so mean, rude and i cant understand his accent,,,so strict..super boring...!!!such a waste of time to take his class..!!HORRIBLE INSTRUCTOR..
Prof. Vayngortin cares about your grade more you think he does. Do your work to get a good grade. He does his more than excellently. Don't think he is mean. He appears to be, but he is the nicest person. He will explain anything and everything more than once if necessary.
The ppl who have positive comments must be talking about a different guy. He doesn't really teach, just does problems students pick from the hwk. He talks to softly to hear, looks bored w/subject, rushes material, doesn't bother to go over anything, doesn't give students enough time to copy the board, grades/formats tests harshly and INTIMIDATING!!
Yes, he never smiles. Yes, he's got an accent. But you know what, his lectures are clear and he's willing to answer any of your questions. I came into this class thinking I was screwed based on a first impression of him but I left the class feeling the most confident i've ever felt about math. He really is a good teacher!
He might seem as a hard teacher, but he is very helpful and understandable. I took him for 110A and 110B. I wish he teaches 110C :(. Good teacher to take!
This is my third time taking him, I keep coming back because I can get away with watching khan academy videos and then doing well in class. Doesn't grade homework, lowest test is dropped. He's a fair grader. The first day, he will tell you in a heavy eastern European accent "In my country we do not smile, but I am still a nice person"
at first i was really bored,,,he was strict and the way he talk was not that clear,,,so you have to study the book on your own,,!!good luck if you take this instructor,,...
He is a good instructor. He is willing to answer your questions. His test is hard, but you will be fine as long as you did all your homework and understand it. You need to work extra hard for his class.
Don't take him if you can't teach yourself math. When he explains things on the board he skips steps and expects you to understand what he did. He is a nice guy but not the best teacher. If he was than the whole class wouldn't fail is test!
Were it not for Mr. Vayngortin, I don't think I would have passed 860. He may seem a bit dry and intimidating on the first day, but part of the reason I found his method so helpful is that he sets boundaries and ground rules right away. Once things get underway he is extremely helpful and kind. He is straightforward with no gimmicks.
He's an alright teacher, he doesn't check homework but don't use that as a reason to take him, His accent is thick but articulate enough to understand. If you don't show up so often you're simply dropped. You have to do work and teach yourself outside of class to pass. He only grades tests which aren't much so it's easy to pass or fail.
Mr. Vayngortin does not deserve to be called a professor. He does not explain anything, simply solves exercises on the board quickly for 20 minutes, and goes have a cigarette outside. He complicates simple stuff. He is not open to dialogue, and is rude, and intimidating. Get ready to go to the math lab a lot if you want an A.
His accent is ok. If u do the homework assigned, u should be fine. He tells u what types of problems to expect before the test. Plus, the tests are easier than the homework in textbook. Just make sure to keep up with his lecture and the book.
His accent is not quite easy understand. Best part is that he will tell what kind of problems will be on the tests. I would recommend you to do the problems on the syllabus.
Hard to understand and is rude. Starts class earlier than is suppose to and marks you absent.
Pretty good, gets the job done. Definitely recommend doing the hw. Tests are pretty hard so every extra problem will help for preparation on exams. Definitely bring the book and do not be late.
totally useless. Ascent is hard to comprehend. Handwriting is illegible. Your whole grade is based on your test scores, only 1 redo for the semester. Only gives 1 example for each section. I would recommend you to just study the textbook that you bought. The textbook explains better than him. He should be replaced with online videos.
Thick accent. Hard to understand. Useless lectures. If you take his class, be prepared to visit tutoring center everyday. All I can tell you is this: I'm going to drop this class even though the full refund time is over. Even if I'm going to get a "W," it is better than an F.
As an avid user of rate my professor, I aim for professors who can teach well. Not only am I barley able to understand his English, I can't understand his problems or math during his lectures. Do not take this class unless you have a good background of trig. His tests are incredibly hard and do not compare to the work he goes over in class.
Lev is a good teacher but you'll only learn if you put in the time for homework. He's always willing to go through difficult homework problems at the beginning of class. Visit his office hours! He's not there to entertain you!
He tries to be helpful, but fails terribly at it. I felt that his examples were not enough. I really liked trig before taking this class. He made me dislike it. But he seems like a nice person, just not good enough a teacher.
Show up to class on time every time. Make sure he knows your name. There are only a few tests, he drops the lowest and also gives extra points for those who show motivation to learn. No assigned homework. So its up to you to study. I Highly rec. studying geometry and algebra thouroughly before taking his trig class. He has no time to retrain.
Hard to understand what he says but easy to pass. Do HW!
He knows what he's talking about. But he talks in such a low voice you can't hear him. He asks "do you get it" but its jus a front. It doesn't seem like he could care less if you "get it", and he gets pissed if you say "no I don't get it". I could watch youtube video's about the same material and be fine, but I need the course...
This guy is a real peice of work. Just a crusty, crotchety, pissed off, little man. He really knows math but you will have to fight for any actual instruction. He is terribly dis-organized and blatantly rude to everyone. Rely on the book and do the HW! The tests are insanely hard and full of trick q's. DONT take him summer semester.
He clearly knows math. If you have problems you can come to him during the class and he explain. The only thing for me was that he skips steps or assume certain things when he does problems on the board which may be confusing. Work hard and u will b fine!
It is ok to use ur notes, book and calc. during the tests, but if u didn't practice enough u won't have time to finish. He gives some "not in the book" info during the lecture which most likely will be on the test, so come to class. If you work hard, ask questions and practice you will pass and get a good grade!
He is a master of mathematics. However, he is not a teacher. He is very bad at teaching.
Okay, so, he generously lets students use notes on tests, but if you did not study--you won't have enough time to finish. He also drops the lowest test grade. He isn't at all enthusiastic, but you have to try to put your part in paying attention and taking notes to pass. You have to try to do the homework even if he does not collect it to practice.
Vayngortin doesnt dedicate a lot of time to teaching in his class, he often just gives you time to do problems from the book. This is very uninteracting and his thick accent makes it very difficult for you to understand concepts when he is teaching. he leaves for smoke breaks and to talk on his cell phone not recommended.
Pros: -Asks the class if the lecture is clear and repeats if it wasn't, Cons: -Somewhat hard to hear accent, his exams are MUCH tougher than the ones the textbook gives YMMV: -Assigns HW, but doesn't check them, not all days are lecture days but are "practice days", walks out of class for a smoke when he's not lecturing, stoic personality
To me, Math is very clear cut. He tends to explain the process and then has you practice a bunch of the problems from the book. He does have a bit of an accent and seems uninterested BUT if you actually participate he has a slight spark of hope in his students and seems willing to help. Closed mouths don't get fed- have a question? Ask.
He doesn't explain anything, he'll simply do examples on the board, skipping steps and assuming you remember every single detail from algebra and trig. He assigns every odd problem from each section covered, which is an average of 100 problemsweek. The worst part? The questions on the exams are from another book, so you never know what to expect.
He's a really chill guy. Tomorrow is the last day of the course and I highly recommend him. Yes He has an accent(only difficult thing about this course). Get over it. He knows what to do. If you research him like I did, he has a PhD. Not many tests. Do some of the homework. Tests more difficult than homework though. Take care Professor Vayngortin!
Vayngortin has a thick accent that takes a while to understand. He says he is willing to help, but he seems bothered every time you ask for help. He teaches straight from the book, so if you understand basic algebra, the book makes it easy to learn what he does not teach.
Lev knows his stuff. He says that you memorize the trigonometric functions by doing the problems. So true! Use it or lose it. However, he is not very approachable. Students need to be willing to reach out, of course, but the bottom line is he doesn't really care if you're there. He's not awful, but his lack of passion makes trig a slog.
Yes He has an accent(only difficult thing about this course). Get over it. He knows what to do. If you research him like I did, he has a PhD. Not many tests. The summer class never need to turn in homework. Tests are similar to the homework. So do the homework and ask questions after class. Take care Professor Vayngortin!
The usual math class. He may come off difficult to understand to some students, as he has a pretty thick accent. As long as you have a basic understanding of algebra you should be able to pass easily. Homework is there but is not mandatory.
I took Math 110C back in 97. At least I studied for one test and for the final. I should have been studying more carefully. The lectures were fun because it was like being in a classroom I would imagine in USSR. The lecture is more old school. Mr Vayngortin told me that he disliked that some students appeared to be dishonest with respect to grades.
