Very good teacher; probably learned more from him than any other teacher
like a live '60 minutes' show. very good class, read the books and it's easy.
Comes off as a jerk, but is really an awesome guy. You'll either love him or hate him, hardly anyone has a neutral opinion of Professor Chorbajian. Do the reading, and write long essays, and you will do fine in the class.
Wonderfully wry sense of humor, very well-read, and great when you need someone's honest opinion about something.
Great teacher as well as person, inspires to find truth. Highly recomend. Appearence: dresses like a bum, but don't be fulled
seems like alot of reading but you don't have to read the books to get an A, trust me, just write alot...
He does dress like a bum, and he is really opinionated, but he knows his stuff and he has definately opened up my eyes to a lot of things I didn't see before in society. Just remember that he is a little fanatical!!!!!
The single BEST professor at UML. Period. End of Story. This man will open your eyes and your mind, if you are willing to learn. A great professor, and someone I'm proud to call a friend. Dr. Chorbajian ROCKS!!
prof chorbajian is the reason you should never judge a book by its cover. take the class, read the books. he puts the "real" back in "reality."
He is one of the best at UML. He talks about real issues and what actually matters. Read the books and youll do fine.
My class he did not teach what related to the books. Know what his opinion is and then you will do fine.
I took Dr. Chorbajian for Sociology of Sports. I found this class to be very easy. If you can handle a few open book essay tests, you can get an A in this class. The only other thing about Dr. Chorbajian is that he has a liberal ideological bent.
Good at what he does simply put. However, his 48.101 course is not for the faint of heart since copious amounts of reading required to go along with lengthy essay tests based only on the reading. He cares about the subject but concepts are not emphasised
Chorbajian is something else! Never learned so much in a semester. Reading load is heavy but more than worth it. It's refreshing to have an optimistic prof who can calmy and hilariously(at times) explain the inner workings of our society. Dont blink.
This guy is terrible. I got an A in the class and couldn't tell you what Sociology is. His neosocialism was too much for me, a soft hearted liberal. He could not understand my desire to not join a Union as a chemist. And we read WAY to many bitter yuppies ****ing about how great the 1950's were.
a lot of reading. if you do the reading the class isn't hard. he is very very opinionated.
This guy opens your eyes. A lot of reading but well worth the effort.
A lot of reading, but well worth it. Teacher opens your eyes to the forces that are allied against you as a member of the working class. He provides a kind of community service to the people who take his class.
Chorbajian is a little strange, but a nice guy. Had him over intersession for Soc. of Sports; requires a lot of reading, but honestly I just skimmed the books and got an AB. Tests are open-book essays, just write a LOT and you'll do fine.
This guy has no clue whats going on. He's only teaching you his opinion and the opinion of others - there is NO fact in this class. As long as you agree with everything he says, no matter how backwards it is, then you will do fine. So, if you can't think for yourself - take this class.
As a lecturer, he's useless. The entire grade was based on two exams that were purely on the reading, not his teaching. At some point he stopped showing up for class completely, because nobody else came, which seemed to be his plan. Should you attend a lecture, you'll hear his opinions on politics.
This guy is a socialist, maybe even a communist. he pretty much hates America. class stunk! if u dont mind reading, take the class cuz you only have to go on the first day, midterm and final. tell him what he wants to hear and dont debate him politically or he will grade against you.
you can tell this guy knows what he's talking about. many accuse him of speaking and teaching only opinions but his books really do back them up and prove that they are fact. you will learn a lot in any soc class and be better off living in a world ruled by the super rich that work against everyone else.
Save your money. Day 1 he asked why politicians don't do what they promised. "because in the 60s people protested, picketed and wrote to complain but not you people. you escape to your drugs and alcohol, watch TV and go shaw-ping - buncha babies!" Excuse me?? It never got any better. I expect more from such an accredited professor.
Once kicked a kid out of class for arguing social security be privatized. He's nuts. I got an A and have no idea what sociology is. If you want an easy A, go for this class, if you want to learn or keep your sanity, stay away.
A question on one of our exams was: "What key event helped Bush and his minions start their conquest for world domination?"
Prof. C. Is eccentric. That said, if you think about what he has to say--ITS TRUE--His analysis of the problems of society ARE CORRECT. I'VE EVEN HEARD RETIRED SENATORS FROM South Carolina say the same thing--WE HAVE THE BEST GOV. MONEY CAN BUY. I don't know if I agree with his solutions, BUT HIS ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM IS ACCURATE & SCHOLARLY.
Some reading to his class, but the most interesting reading I have done in college. He doesn't use the standard boring text book for his classes, but ones he selects each semester covering different topics. Also his lectures are concise and interactive. Exams are easy as long as you explain your viewpoint and argue it using the materials in the books. One of my favorite profs at UML.
He'l kick you out of his lecture if you sneeze too loud
prof C really knows his material. he appeals to the open-minded, mature, hard-working, experienced individual who knows that there is more to the picture. Attend class. Engage in converstation and dont be afraid to ask him something. He is dedicated to young people and education.
worst professor i have ever had. he does not explain anything, will fail you if you do not read, and should stop teaching, he does not care for the studentes understanding of the material. stay away from this teacher.
Straight forward....do the reading, take the three exams, and get your grade. Maturity is needed in his class. One bonehead in the class cheated on an open book exam and got caught. He always gives the student a chance to raise their grade by doing an additional essay on the final exam...I was shocked at how few took advantage.
the first day of the class this guy was a seating arrangement nazi and talked about how "...the people who died in 9/11 weren't innocent". I dropped after the first day because the class is liberal horsesh*t propaganda 101-not intro to sociology.
A good professor teaches unbiased facts from which you can form your own opinions. This professor tries to impose his own twisted ideas upon his students. If this is how he wants to teach, he should be removed from his position.
A bit of reading is involved...you are responsible for your own grade. Show up and take notes. Open book exams....do the work and it will show...don't do the work, and it will show. An easy grade for mature adults.
I took his intro to soc class and what i noticed is that anyone over 30 with real experience in the working class world, or any minorities or immigrants liked the prof and the people that didnt were young, apathetic and uninterested in working and challenging the complacency of their daily lives. he dresses the way he thinks: boldly.
Chorbajian is a straight shooter. Class is irrelevant to the tests, and he tells you this up front. Do at least some of the reading and most of his test questions answer themselves.

Boring, read alots
awful.
An "easy" class if your brain works. Maturity is expected and rewarded. Take it seriously, take notes, and show up and interact. What could be "easier" for a college student?
This guy has a captive audience for his own agenda each semester and he exploits it. If you disagreed with him in class, your grade would suffer. I also heard him say people who died in 911 weren't innocent- because they can vote and could have changed things. I was so terrified of his tests that i studied like mad- and got an A.
Professor Chorbajian is a wonderful teacher who was very knowledgeable in the subject matter and readily available to answer questions. I would not hesitate to sign up for one of his classes again.
I didn't know a thing about soc. of sports before taking the class....I didn't really like most sports. Dr. C showed how it was all related. This class is an "A" to all those who have the ability to think and interact. I would not hesitate to take another course with Dr. C.
A great class. This guy knows what he is talking about and it shows. You have to show up and put in the effort and you will be rewarded accordingly. A lot of reading is required. Does not require anything other than effort. If you make the effort, then you will walk away with the grade you deserve. I would take another class taught by him in a se
If u dont like to read dont take his class, u have to read 4 books and all his tests come straight form the books, and there is no point in going to his class bc he doesnt cover any test material. he likes to hear himself talk!
Started in a class of almost 300 and went to probably 100. His discussions are not focused on just material from the books which the tests are based. Brief coverage. To do well with him you def need to read all of the books in detail and articles that he gives. But he does give a lot of extra credit assignments but they are at specific times
Come on people! Show up to class and read the assignments. Open book tests. If you read and understood the assignments, you should have no problem. Dr. C is asking for responsibilty, nothing more.
For the person below this comment, there was no open book tests. But I agree with everything else you say. If you read all the material you will be fine. But he doesnt cover the material in class. If you can be a college student and read, then you will do great.
If youre Liberal and willing to read you'll do fine. If you are a closed minded convervative-> forget it. Very opinionated. Going to class doesnt help much, just skim the text book and know basic concepts and you'll do fine. Offers many extra credit oppurtunities. Acts like a huge tool but you will learn alot if you keep an open mind.
Just to clarify-tests are open book for reference, but they are lengthy books you must read prior to taking the test. if your essays prove you read the book you'll get an easy A. i suggest reading the books during classtime-he doesn't care, and it's more than enough time to read through each one. An easy class if you aren't afraid of a little work.
Levon Chorbajian is the best. He is willing to teach during the day and willing to teach at night. (When does this guy sleep?) I've taken a few classes with Dr. Chorbajian, and it's all the same thing. (Listen, read the assignments, and show up and take interest. You will get the grade you make the effort for. ( No suprise.)
Guys assignes 3 books plus his book. It is a pain in the ass when it comes to exam day because each question is like half a page long and their are like 50 of them. BullS***
Don't never ever take this class if you don't like reading. Terrible, alot of works. 5 think books within a semester.
NEVER take a class with this man! All he does in class is spout ridiculous conspiracy theories, and then the day before the test he will tell you nothing he said is actually on the test, which is actually based on huge amounts of nearly incomprehensible reading. His class brought my GPA down from a 4.0 to a 3.7.
Actually, I think it's good that he kicks people out of class for talking. Honestly, it's refreshing to see a professor stand against that sort of stuff. Everything on the tests are taken from the assigned reading. There are no curveballs. As a hard science major, I really don't have much interest in the study of sociology, but I learned a lot.
Rudest Msn I have ever met, he doesnt come to class to teach, he comes to have an audience to tell his ridiculous government theories too.
Just do the reading and you'll do fine all his questions on the test are straight forward and you know he hates america so keep that in mind when answering questions they pretty much answer themself
Dr. Chorbajian requires a lot. This is not say that he is impossible. He will tell you on the first day of class what is required of you, as an adult. Three essay tests, a 10 page report, and a class presentation. You will get a grade equal to the effort you make. What more could you ask?
not a typical soc educator he's very biased you'll either love him or hate him, he is a skeptical thinker if you are too you'll like him and be interested. He assigns books to read you should def get them for reference but you don't have to actually read them so no homework he explains the books in class just listen and agree with him i got a B
IT's all about the extra credit!!! I got a F,C-,and a C on his tests but I got a B in the class because I did like 4 extra credit assignments!! Not a bad class, he lets you eat and sleep but DO NOT TALK!!
VERY NICE PERSON, WELL-EDUCATED AND BELIEVE ME IF YOU DO THE EXTRA CREDIT YOU'LL GET AT LEAST B. I LIKED THE CLASS AND HE IS VERY INTERESTING AS A PERSON. EMAIL HIM AND HE WILL RESPOND IMMEDIATELLY. VERY NICE CLASS
close minded and liberal
Yes, he is a liberal. (When did it become a bad thing to be called or even be a liberal?)Turn off your tv's and start reading. (A lot of reading is required for this class.) Gives essay style exams, so you have to know the material.
Had him for intro to sociology. Not your typical intro class - lots of reading and if you're a right winger you'll hate it. For the open minded out there this is a good way to learn a lot about how messed up the world is. Do at least a few extra-credits. Personally, I loved this class.
Does anyone else like his shirt with the cartoon fruits all over it? Love this man.
Didn't read a word of the books, only went to class on the first day, movie days(3 or 4), and exam days(3), and i got an A. Just do alot of extra credits. He gives five points to your test average for each one that you do.
I enjoyed his class. He has 40 years experience in the field so don't be upset when he snubs your opinion after you spend 5 minutes studying. Lots of Reading, tests are not the time for your opinion, answer the questions from the books.
A class with Dr. Chorbajian makes you think. He will make you think about things that appear in the newspapers and internet as news. He is one of the best teachers at UML. I have taken two classes with him and I can say that he smart. Keep an open-mind and you will understand. You will have to read alot, but you will be rewarded. Take any class.
It's not about learning anything about sociology. Worst prof. I can imagine.
One of the few teachers that I will be keeping my notes from. Act like an adult and get treated like an adult. Listen and understand with intelligent thoughts and questions. Think, read, and get an A.
Take his intro to soc. failed all the tests and still got an a from extra credit
Go to class and at least scan the books and, with 2 or 3 exta credit papers, you'll be fine. You can learn a lot of really important things from him if you keep an open mind and pay attention. And he'll love you if you're involved with a group that he supports, i.e., PHENOM. He's a really great guy, to boot, just a bit nicer than he is in class.
3 tests. 1 for each book you have to read, plus includes some of the book he wrote in each test. You read boring books that are just compilations of news articles, and then get a multiple choice test- a lot harder than it sounds. This guy doesn't teach, but just whines about old times.
How can you NOT get an A in this course? Read the material before he covers it and take notes. Study those notes before each exam for an hour and you will be fine. The exams are common sense. If you plan to skip class often, do as many extra credit assignments as possible because each assignment can boost your exam average by 5 points.
You will learn nothing about sociology in this class. He doesn't teach but basically tries to brainwash you into supporting socialist or communist government. But this class is easy just do the extra credits and you'll get an A
Open book, open mind, equals a good grade.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. Didnt learn anything about sociology. Had to read a million books.
Horrible professor for freshmen! You don't learn anything about sociology and you have to read really boring books that he wrote himself. Worst teacher I have ever had. Really disappointing if you actually want to learn the basics of sociology. Once again, horrible professor, horrible class
ok heres the deal dont read the books jsut find a pattern in the 4 50 Multiple choice tests and do the extra credit essays whicih only have ot be 4 pages. he is wicked boring and classes are ridiculous! i had 30 points added to my final grade because of extra credit
STUPID CLASS, DONT EVEN GO, DONT EVEN BOTHER BUYING THE BOOKS.heres the low down.he gives extra credit, you type a 4 pg paper about it, pass it in on the due date, leave.once in a while go to pick up your extra credit papers.take the tests and guess and all those xtra credits will add onto your final grade! SO EASY. Preaches about his own books!
sets you up for an A. Skim Power book, try to read the other one, if not just do the extra credits.. dont even have to go to class..
Don't bother going to class but you must read everything!!!!
This was one one of the best classes I have taken here! Great Professor and really opens you mind about our world. Class is movies and going over books. tests r ez and he grades really well. I would recommend this prof to ANY student looking for a good easy grade and also wants to learn at the same time. Take this class and/or prof.
Got a C in the class, went to probably 5 classes the whole semester. If you understand the way he feels about the subject matter you'll generally be able to get by with some light reading of the books.
Great professor, extremely relevant and important class! For clarification, 'his' textbook is compiled writings from other authors. READ THE BOOKS! His class is simple. Pay attention to the material, its relevant and important, hes showing you the alternative, TRUTHFUL side to issues we are being lied to about(no its not socialist propaganda).
Possibly the worst teacher I've ever had, makes you read ridiculously boring books and the tests are impossible to pass even if you read them. Class average for the first test in my 200 person lecture with him was a 52, and he refused to scale it. Enough said.
I am in intro to sociology class right now, I have friends who are also in other intro classes and are actually learning about sociology. I would recommend another teacher if sociology is not of interest to you or looking for a easy A, he mainly teaches about foreign policy and past mistakes of America. He compares America to Europe a lot.you must
Brilliant.
at first, he may come off as strict- he'll kick you out of class if he sees or hears you talking- but if you ask him questions, he's very helpful and actually very nice. his exams can be hard if you dont do the assigned readings. but get the books and READ and you'll do fine in this class
Here is the deal first test is extreamly hard, he does this to weed out people. Next 2 exams easy. As long as you go against everything American you will get a C or higher on the exams. Gives so much extra credit that you can get a B in the class with a 60 average on the exams
Stay away from this class. He is a disorganized teacher who's lectures are disjointed and sometimes contradicts the readings. He has no respect for the students. If you have to take his class just show up for the tests and do the extra credit. Truly one of the worst teachers I have ever had.
this teacher is awful trust me and very rude. this is a useless class and i don't see why a gen ed class show be this hard.pls stay away from him if you don't want him to mess up your GPA because you not gonna have time to read all the books for his course
Professor Chorbajian is the man. Stop whining because you didn't want to do the reading, or didn't show up. Chorbajian isn't easy, to be sure, but he is a fair professor, and if you pay attention in his class, you will benefit from it. He's the reason I major in Sociology.
Prof. Chorbajian is a very good professor and has published several books. The Power:A Critical Reader that was assigned in his class is a must read which he co-assimilated with Prof. Daniel Egan. I highly recommend his class.
The tests are hard but he provides lots of extra credit opportunities. I got much more than just a good grade from this guy. I learned a lot. If you do the assigned readings and take advantage of the extra credit opportunities he provides, Acing in this class is easy. But you gotta work. Way to go Dr. Chorbajian.
I took the intro class winter '10. This guy is a riot, a complete left wing nut. I found his antics funny, if you are a republican you'll have a hard time with him. Go to class and take GOOD notes. You need LONG essay answers & details. It took me 2 exams to figure out what he was looking for. Read, take good notes and you'll get a B like me.
Take notes and learn. Republican or Democrat makes no difference as long as you can think and express yourself.Stop blaming the "system" as to why you cannot get your degree.
He is easily the worst professor i have had. He puts you to sleep during his boring lectures that make no sense. He rummbles on about information not related to the textbook work. His test are emtremely hard and he does not cover the material in class needed to get a satisfactory grade. By far the worst!
Okay am not going to lie this professor is one of the worst professor at UML he gives out three books over 300+ pages to read every twoo weeks is an test..If you are going to slack off and not read the book do not take his class. He is very leninet if you writes 15+ pages of essay on test. Good Luck if you take him :)
Chorbajian is a complete conspiracy theorist and is opposed to the system. That being said, I showed up to class 4 times, never bought a text, and got a C in the class. If you need an easy SS elective, this is it. 3 multiple choice exams make up the entire grade, but he gives lots of extra credit oppurtunities.
The key to an easy A is to tell him what he wants to hear. Just answer questions as if you were a communist / Marxist and you'll be all set. With most classes, the professor will grade you on whether or not you can support your perspective with fact. This class is a rare exception. Just adopt his opinions and you'll be fine.
A bit boring at times, but extremely interesting at others. Depends on your interests. If you are a closed-minded individual who shouldn't have made it to college in the first place, stay away from this class. Otherwise, it is an easy A if you at least skim the readings and go to half of the classes.
Honestly, the majority of the class say that this is one of the worst college professors. When he gives lectures he skips around subjects and goes off to a new topic then he comes back to his previous topic and your notes are all over the place. When he talks it makes you want to sleep. He is really bad at explaining things. Dont talk in his class!
All he does is lecture and rants off topic about how he hates the world. Attending his lectures are not mandatory at all, just read your book and attend the review sessions for your exams. Do not I repeat DO NOT talk during his lectures, unless if you have a question to ask him. He would point you out in the audience of 300 and tell you to leave.
Professor Charbajian is very knowledgeable in the soc field. If you are looking for a good concrete class to take and want to learn about society take this class. 3 exams enough extra credit to earn an A. Go to class go to review sessions do extra credit and its an easy A. If you aren't passionate your Education Don't take this class.
Get out of this class 3 tests on 3 books in their entirety. He doesn't have powerpoint just stands and rants in his mono-toned voice. Get another professor asap
His class is huge but not many attend them. His three tests are on three books, not his lectures. Make sure you go to the study group the night before the test. The best part are the extra credit work he gives, which are 4 page papers. Make sure you follow his instructions to the T. The extra credit added 25 points to my grade.
This guy has some interesting opinions, most of which you may not agree with. If you can write well, and long-winded, the exact words you think he'd want to hear, you'll do well. When I took it with him, he only questioned you on specific chapters of the books he assigned, so you don't even have to read the whole thing. Not too bad, but not great.
Had Chorbajian for Intro to Sociology. He teaches the gritty facts of reality and the United States. Chorbajian is a true asset to UMASS. I highly recommend you go into his class with an open mind.If you do, you will take out a lot. The class is easy as long as you listen to lectures and go to the test review sessions.
I learned the ugly truth about American society from the course and from this professor.
Easily the worst professor that I've ever had.
Having taken Sociology previously, I can say that this professor's course had absolutely nothing to do with basic Sociology. It was more of a bully pulpit for him to rant out his anger at society and the world. Find another teacher if you'd actually like to learn something.
I highly recommend staying far away from Chorbajian's class. He's very unhelpful and nothing he says in class correlates with the tests. You read the books on your own and basically teach yourself. You can get by if you do the extracredit and go to review sessions. But id try and avoid his class at all costs
Professor did not teach any sociology. Instead, he ranted and raved about the "evils" of society, the oppression by the rich/powerful. Many of his statements were misleading or outright dishonest. If you want to learn sociology, avoid this course.
Keep an open mind and you will learn both good and bad. One of the best at UMASS.
Expected Intro. to Sociology, turned out to be Lizard men & the Illuminati: How and why they're out to get you. Claims to promote "Critical thinking" but actually just wants you to blindly adopt his opinions. If you want to hear someone rant about governmental conspiracies, save yourself the tuition and look in your local mental hospital.
I would recommend this course to every student attending college, The course will teach you how to think critically and ask the right question. Prof Levon was wonderful teaching this course, with 40Plus years of experience he makes the class really interesting. The course materials: Books and the films are great every day stuff we always ignore.A+
Greatest Professor, Will teach you leadership skills, and best of the best critical thinking skill. Highly recommend every student to take his class. The class is very interesting, and helpful throughout your career.I gained a lot from Him.
One of the worst professor I have ever had. He is very disorganized. The class is very dull and I didn't learn anything. He is strict and not the nicest. I would not recommend this course by him. The class didn't have much to do with sociology.
Awful. Do not take this professor. His views on society are warped and screwed up. He's against the wealthy but he's also against the poor. I do not know how this man lives his life. He is crazy do not take his class.
Literally awful. He's rude and is very closed minded. He's just an awful person and I don't recommend anyone to take his class.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! All he does is rant about our screwed up government and system. His tests are opinionated and the class average for the first test was a 56 and he didnt care. We will see what happens next. Just do not take this class, it's far too advanced to be an intro class.
Honestly is the best professor of my freshmen year. I started off with an F ended the semester with an A. Failed both of his exams, but he gives 3 extra credit opportunity. Each worth 5 points added to your final grade. There's no way you can fail his class. Just make sure to read his books and do the extra credit, and you'll be good.
Terrible class
Got a 28 on the first exam, skipped the second exam, never went to class, got a B
He bases your entire grade off of three exams and all three are based completely on absurd amounts of reading. You will need 4-5 books for these tests which just so happen to all be written by either himself or his closest friends. Total joke of a class which its only purpose is to shove his view of politics down your throat and make book money.
As long as you listen in class, he goes over each chapter in whatever book we will be tested on in our next exam. It was helpful to bring my laptop, that way I could type everything he said. He offers long office hours for extra discussion and is available through email to help, you just have to show some interesteffort and he will happily help
If you want to be ranted at by a grumpy, belligerent toad you have come to the right place. If you want to hear an apologist for the worst dictators in history you have come to the right place. If you want to be told that you and your country are filth you have come to the right place. If you want to learn about Sociology look elsewhere.
It is astonishing that Umass Lowell lets this guy teach. Levon is absolutely insane. He's a hardcore conspiracy theorist and didn't teach me a thing about sociology. If you need to take this class and he's the only teacher available, just take it a different semester. The books he makes you buy really are written by himself and his friends, scam...
Someone needs to explain to this guy that sociology is about the science of social behavior, not socialism
He's super boring. Barely read the books, but if you do the extra credit, you can pass with a B+.
This class is just reading biased books and then taking tests on them. Class is extremely boring and to be honest you really don't need to go to class because he doesn't take attendance and talks the whole time. If you read, do the study guides, and the extra credit you will pass. I'd suggest taking another professor though if you want to learn.
Levon may come off as terrifying at first, but once you get past the intimidation he is actually very funny and not a bad guy. He may give a lot of reading (mostly written by himself and friends), but as long as you do the reading and take notes in class you will be fine. Also, he is extremely generous with extra credit to make up for the tests.
I took this class for Intro to Sociology. It is based mostly on Levon's opinions and you read his books and his friend's books. The tests are pretty difficult but he lets you write 3 extra credit papers and an essay on the day of the final which brings your grade up 2 letter grades. I definitely learned a lot and it is possible to get an A.
Levon's test are pretty tough but he gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities to boost your grades. His class is based on his theories and he's really hard to understand sometimes. At first I thought this class was going to be impossible to pass but if you read the assigned books, show up to class, and do the extra credit you will get an A.
Never read the books. Just did extra credit and passed with a B. Although you may think its impossible to pass it isn't. I would honestly stay in this class, although it is long and boring, if you put in the extra credit you can easily pass.
At the beginning I was not sure about his class, he has you reading a lot of books, but I didn't read one book all semester and I passed with an A. He gives you so many options for extra credit and if you take them then you can easily pass. He's funny at time, but his lectures are boring but you just need to listen to know what will be on the test.
He is very intimidating, but he gives a lot of extra credit. Lots of reading, but if you read on time and do the extra credit then you won't have any problems with his class.
Not as bad as everyone told me he would be. Skim the books, listen to him in class, and do the extra credit and you'll get an easy A. If you need help, go to his office hours and he'll talk to you for hours until you understand. Also gives 15 points worth of extra credit on your final grade.
Do not take a class with this professor. He's very condescending and closed minded, hates the US government, along with the wealthy. I have learned absolutely nothing taking this course. His test are extremely challenging as well. They consist of three and you have to buy four books for this class. The books that he and his friends wrote basically
His main concern is shoving his liberal far left wing beliefs down your throat. He expects you to conform and adopt his views. Thinks the US shouldn't have jails and prison is what is wrong with our society, what a joke! Makes you buy HIS book which he undoubtedly gets royalties on. He should not be allowed to teach, especially to vulnerable kids!
Assigned 5 books on the first day. Talks from the ,inute class begins to the minute it ends
If you can read 4 books and learn solely from them then you will get an A. His extra credit does help a lot. I barely went to class, somehow got the study guides from other people, studied them, got a 52, 68 and 78 on the three exams and did the extra credit. Ended up with a B-.
You really have to read every book you get for his class, or you won't pass his tests. The only grades you have in his class are two tests, the final, and the extra credit he offers (WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND). Unless you seriously love sociology, you won't get a decent grade without doing the extra credit.
Prof. Chorbajian, Intro to Soc online: He's clearly a radical supporter for communistic principles and if your writing assignments don't reflect a degree of conformity to that agenda, then your grade reflects the difference of opinion. I did VERY well once I adopted a 'burn the flag' mentality in assignments. There's a lot of reading and blogging.
Worst professor ever.
Never taking a course with this professor again, very strict with his classes, he likes things done a certain way... his way. and thats it. At the end of the semester I still cant tell you what sociology really is...
One of the worst classes and worst professors I have seen. Barely went to class as each class goes from start to finish each time about his radical leftist beliefs he would like to shove down your throat. He lets you know from the start nothing he discusses in class is "on the exams" which are just essays from the books you must read.
I graduated from uml two years ago and I've never rated a professor on this website. I just thought to do this after re-reading a book he assigned us. Uml does not have a great political science program, but this class was the one standout exception. The concepts Chorbaijan taught us were so much more in touch with the real world. Take his class.
I enjoyed Professor Chorbajian's classes and spoke with him in his office quite often.
I was poking around my old alma mater and found Dr Chorbajian, who I had in 1982. He took an unusual tact to teach. We had to read controversial books on controversial subjects. This the. Required me to research other opinions before I committed to one side or the other. I learned a great deal, and also learned how to defend a position.
