Very entertaining lectures. Just study your notes and go to class.

I never read the textbook and just studied my notes before the test and made an easy A. He expectations are very clear. Do the helper/helpee thing. I did and didn't have to take the third test. There is no final!

He's seriously the easiest teacher I've ever had. Every single thing he taught us I had learned in 9th grade. He looks and sounds exactly like Tommy Chong. Definitely be a helper if you can, I didn't have to go the entire last third of the semester. Overall a very interesting guy.

Dr. Held's a very good teacher. The lectures were always interesting, and he genuinely loves biology. I loved this class, if you do well enough on the first test do the helpee/helper thing. I did, and was exempt from the last test. Just make sure and go to class, you'll benefit from it.

Held was a THE BEST. The dude knows what he's talking about and actually cares about it too! Funny as hell. Take him if you can, you wont regret it.

Easy class! Just write definitions of words on cheat sheet he hands out and you're set for the test. He has 3 tests, of 50 words, 10 different sets of all matching. EASY! And he's hilarious! Loved going to his class!

Probably one of Tech's best professors. He's hilarious and brilliant, he really cares about your success and understanding, take him if you can.

I loved Dr. Held's class! his tests are all multiple choice/matching and there is no homework for lecture. He explains everything really well and is really funny. I would definatly suggest you take his class!

Held was great, hilarious and I learned a lot. Got a pretty easy A from his class. If you show up to class and study about an hour for each test you will get at least a B. Take him if you can, one of the best professors at Tech. My favorite so far. He knows what he is talking about and that makes the class engaging.

I took Dr. Held's lecture due to a reccommendation - he's a great teacher, and very willing to help you. As much as I studied, his tests absolutely killed me. Don't take his class if you aren't prepared to study and attend his lectures. Very good teacher.

This class was really fun, and he is one of the top Professors at Tech. Every semester it seems he is up for an award, but do not be fooled, this class is not easy, if you do not go to class, the tests will kill you. The tests are hard if you do not read and study. There is no final in his class, so thats a bonus. Hope this helps

He's a funny teacher. For the first half of the class, simply memorize the diagrams booklet. No need to pay attention to the lectures. For the second half of the class, the tests will be directly from the lecture. Stay awake and take good notes!

BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. Gives you opportunity to only take 2 exams and no final. Makes the material easy to understand in a fun/humorous way. Tests are extremely easy format (easy to eliminate answers). Would recommend him to anyone that needs to take Biology of Animals.

I had fun in this class. But the tests are HARD! Study for them and go to class if you want a good grade. The book helped me study, so don't skip buying it.

Easy class. If you understand biology whatsoever then all you need to do is do the study guide for your tests and study that. I didn't have to go to class very much and still came away with an easy A.

He is amazing! If you have to take biology take Dr.Held!!! No final and gives you an opportunity to only take 2 tests instead of 3.

Dr. Held has a great teaching style. He makes the material easy to understand by comparing it to things we, as 21 century college students, can relate to and is pretty funny during lecture. Not to mention he doesn't give a final exam, and gives you a chance to be exempt from the third exam. Make sure to study though. Definitely choose Held for Bio!

Brilliant scientist and great teacher. It's not often that you get that combination. I have to say that, as an undergrad, his developmental biology class was one of the best I took. As a grad student, the teaching and learning strategies course he teaches was essential. Great guy, awesome teacher. If you get a chance, take a class with Dr. Held.

I am currently in his BIO 1402 class right now. Usually I am awful at science, #1 reason i switched my major but he makes it extremely easy. He makes lectures funny and if you attend class he gives hints on what will be on the test. 3 tests total, all matching. So far I have made a 92 and 100 on his tests. I highly recommend him.

It's an easy class if you make it easy. Not for those who study just a few days before or have no interest in Biology.Professor was great yes but the class was just too much information for me personally to learn and remember. Lectures are interesting but bit overwhelming at times and just make sure to really study!

Makes a boring class interesting, as he gives very good notes and lectures which help you big time on tests. I didn't even need to use the text book. Go to class and pay attention and you'll be fine. He's amazing. First half of class is not as interesting as second half, but he is fantastic in lectures. The class is 4 exams, no final. Each exam has 10 matching sections of 5 questions. Very straightforward IF you study. Just enjoy his class and learn some awesome stuff from a true nerd.

Dr. Held has by far been my favorite professor so far. Attendance is not mandatory, but his lectures are always entertaining, and he gives away major hints of what are on his tests. This class is a MUST for non-majors. His test layout is the easiest and perfect for students adapting to college. He is so passionate and knowledgable in what he lectures over. My favorite science class at Texas Tech!! Attendance not mandatory, but show up and you'll never need the book!

Easy. All test questions are off of the vocabulary you learn from his lectures (also found in the book). There's in total 3 tests, no final exam. Participation isn't required, but I will say - STUDY IF YOU WANT AN A. Very simple.

HELD IS GREAT. He keeps you engaged and keeps things simple. You're a non-major and he respects that. There are three tests entirely on vocab, most of which can be found in Quizlets, though his lectures are genuinely the best source of help. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will NEVER regret going. You don't /need/ the book but I found it useful.

Dr. Held has to be the best professor on Tech's campus. He does this thing called "A Game for Altruists" where, if you make an A on the first test you can tutor someone who made a D or F, and for the second one, and if you raise their grade by at least 10 points you're exempt from the 3rd test and get to stop going to class. He's the coolest!

His developmental biology class is one of the best I've taken at Tech. Great professor, makes material easy, ready to help you with stuff related to class, med school, and grad school. Lectures are long, material is a little hard but he makes sure you know what's important for the test. Makes every lecture enjoyable, interesting, and funny.

He tries really hard to explain things thoroughly... if you're not good at biology you'll barely pass. There's so much to study and there's a lot of things on the test that aren't in lecture but on the sheet he gives you. I wouldn't advise taking it if you're not good at bio or chem and don't need the class. And it's only three tests, no quizzes.

Because his classes are all so huge all he does is lectures. If you're not good at sitting and paying attention for a while then I wouldn't recommend. However, he is very entertaining and very good at explaining and teaching. I would recommend this professor.

Entertaining, helpful and cares about students. For a non majors class, he doesn't force you to understand unnecessary concepts. Just the basics. He is a very engaging lecturer. Would recommend this course!

His lectures are interesting. There are no power points but instead he writes on the overhead as he goes, which i like. He gives you a study checklist before each test.3 tests, no final, no homework, no quizzes. Since there are only 3 grades for this class, if you fail a test, you're screwed. He is passionate about his field and inspires students to not only learn about Developmental Biology, but to become more personally engaged students by staying up-to-date on scientific advancement. Dr. Held is an AMAZING professor. He tells you during the notes in class what will be on the test, as well as gives you a check off sheet of the exact terms that will be on the test. He went to MIT but he cusses like a sailor. His lectures are hilarious, he's probably the most interesting professor I've ever had.

Professor Held was by far my favorite professor at Texas Tech. He gives really entertaining lectures and his tests were all matching so they were very easy. He expects alot of detail when he hands out the study guide. Although the exams are easy you cant just show up and expect to get an A. He writes everything important down on the projecter too.

Definitely take him if you need an easy upper-bio credit. He tells you what's on exams, so showing up to class is essential. First half of the material is a bit more difficult, and is mainly based on the diagrams book. Second half is straight from lecture so make sure to record his lectures! It's an easy A if you study what he tells you.

Dr. Held's class was my favorite class this semester. Attendance isn't taken, but the test is based off lecture definitions. Handles evolution in a respectful manner (given we're in the Bible Belt). Final grade based on 3 tests and the lab grade (no final!). Overall one of my favorite professors and he's always happy to help!!

He doesn't take attendance, but if you don't show up you'll probably do poorly because the test are based on lecture definitions. His test are easy if you go to class and study--it's just matching. If you ace the first test you can tutor someone who failed, and if you raise their grade he'll exempt you from the third test and give you an A on it.

Really enjoyed taking Professor Held's class. His style of teaching really helped me retain information easily. 3 tests are the only grades aside from the lab portion of the class. Attendance isn't mandatory and it's easy to get notes from people if you miss!

It should be impossible to fail this class. He tells you EXACTLY what will be on the exam. Word for word from his lecture in a table that matches the exam. As others have said, try to make an A on the first exam! You'll be able to skip the 3rd exam and there's no final. Don't buy the book either, I never opened it and made a 100 in the class.

Not a hard class at all. Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly suggest going to class. For BIOL 1401, Dr. Held had only 3 tests, each with 50 questions. The test were matching definitions to words he talked about in lectures. It's easy but definitely make a quizlet for it.

Dr. Held did a great job of making the material interesting as well as making sure you had everything to succeed on the tests. He put material in an easy to understand context and would always answer any questions. I would definitely take his Bio 1402. No book was necessary.

Great professor, if you attend class and read the textbook you will do extremely well. He's also a very good lecturer and makes topics that I already know (Im a biochemistry major) and made them interesting to me. I would recommend this class to anyone who needs the biology credit.

Dr. Held is an amazing instructor. He is not your typical instructor, he does a lot of things to make his class easier on students: there is no final exam, only 4 midterms for 100% of the grade, the test format is great, blocks of 5 questions where you match 5 questions with 5 answers. He is not difficult to follow, and he is really funny.

He really enjoys his job and makes that very clear. He makes lectures bearable and amusing. The only grade in this class is from tests and lab, so you really have to study. He also gives hints about what will be on the test, so it's very beneficial to go to the lectures.

No attendance grade, and you can get what you need through his syllabus, which outlines where each lecture is covered in the textbook. Tests are fairly easy, 50 question matching, and he also provides the opportunity to skip out on the last third of class and the last test. No final either. Dr. Held is a great professor to take for Biol 1402, he still uses an overhead but his lectures are very informative. You must attend his class to pass, and taking notes is recommended. He drops hints for the test, and if you attend the SI sessions for his class, you will more than likely pass.

Held was an awesome bio teacher, still uses an old school overhead projector, but is very good at condensing the course into an outline and gives you a good sense at what's going to be on the test, I didn't even bother to buy the textbook. The tests are matching so that's a plus, is a fairly easy class to pass if you do your part.

Gets off topic fast, but he is a great professor. Test are very easy so if you attend the lectures and si sessions you should pass with flying colors. Had a book but never really used it.

Attendance is not technically mandatory, but his tests are mostly based on lecture. This class was often a highlight of the week! He is so funny and incredibly intelligent. I learned a lot! This class was only for core credit, but he is one of those professors who you look back on and remember having a positive impact on your college experience.

Dr. Held is awesome! Tests are based on definitions so be sure to understand topics. GO TO SI SESSIONS THEY HELP SO MUCH!! only 4 tests which are 2/3 of grade 1/3 is the lab grade. NO homework. Offers a program if you do well on the first test you can tutor someone and not have to take the last test if they score certain amount of points. TAKE HIM

I'm an exceptionally poor student when it comes to science, so when I was told I needed to take this class my heart sank. Especially with everything being online this year. Mr. Held's lectures were super clear and fun to watch. I also missed an exam due to the snow/loss of power. Held was sympathetic and didn't penalize me! Great prof and great guy

Dr. Held's class was great! Our SI session leader was great as well. It helped a lot going to SI sessions, especially with test review before each exam. There was only 3 exams during the semester and that was it. The tests weren't hard either. I'm glad I took this class.

He takes a lot of time to make his powerpoints & you can tell. He tries to make Biology interesting for people who aren't BIOL majors. There are only 3 tests & no final. The lab is where you will be getting most of the credit. Very easy class to take & get credit for. Would recommend it to anyone not very passionate about biology.

This class is easy and just depends on how good you want your grade to be. If you want to get an A+ you must show up to lecture because he will tell you what will be on the test. He makes it really easy to pass.

I toke BIOL 1402 for my required science credit and I'm so glad I ended up with Professor Held. He is a really good professor and is funny too. He makes the lectures easy to understand even though there is a lot of information to uncover. The tests are very easy, all matching vocab, and 50 questions for each test. Lab was very easy too!

Dr. Held definitely cares about his students. Though there is a decent amount of information to cover, he is able to make it entertaining. There is no homework. There are 3 exams that are all matching, so they are very straight forward. This class requires very minimal work.

Dr. Held is great, the only assignments for the whole semester are 3 tests so make sure you do good on those. He is an amazing and very understanding professor, but the lab taken with the course involves cockroaches, and it's very hands-on.

He is the best biology professor at Texas Tech. He had very clear grading criteria-4 exams with 25% each. He did curve our grades when class performance was down. Need to study to pass! His lectures are fun and he uploads slides with notes to the blackboard so you can study at home. The last two days of class were especially fun! Don't miss them!

Amazing professor. Extremely kind and loving. He is able to relate his class to day to day life and explains evolution in a clear and concise manner. He is a brilliant scientists and holds his students to a high standard but his tests are easy if you attend lecture. He grades very fast and is considerate with grading.

Professor Held is very great at Teaching, he uses various ways to grab our attention, and he provides funny relatable examples for us to understand processes in Biology. I HIGHLY recommend for you to go to class because he points out what is going to be on the test.

Best class to take to get that science rec out of the way. Dr. Held is a very funny and smart man. He understands most of us are not biology majors and does not hold us to the standard he would hold actual bio studnets. Hardest part of this class is the lab (1/3 of grade) but even that is an easy A if you just show up to lab and do your work.

I took Developmental Biology with Dr. Held and I highly recommend it if you need bio electives. No lab and incredibly interesting stuff, probably because he makes it so. You can tell right off the bat how brilliant this man is, and he is astoundingly adept at simplifying difficult subjects through detailed explanations and amazing cartoons.

This professor made going to class enjoyable. I loved his lectures, they went by so fast. He uses props and analogies to help make the information make sense. Prof Held is amazing and incredible. 11/10 for this class. IF YOU ARE DEBATING TAKING THIS CLASS, TAKE IT!!! You will not regret it. He gives no homework as well, only 3 tests.

Dr.Held is an amazing and easy professor, he only has 3 grades which are test, if you go to lectures the test a fairly easy to pass, considering he gives answers in class.

He tries to make his class enjoyable and entertaining you have 3 test grades and then your lab grade for the course so its not many grades but the tests are not particularly hard, nor is the lab. The only thing with the lab is you have to stay on top of assignments at the beginning of the week before lab because deadlines are weird.

Although the textbook was required, it was online and easily accessible. Also, during lectures, Professor Held would always make explanations of tough topics fun to learn about and easier to understand. He was so funny that you couldn't NOT pay attention.

Labs are easy if you go and pull your weight. The labs are separate from lectures, so they don't coincide with what we learn. Dr. Held really cares.

The only grades are tests though so there isn't a lot of room for error but I got a good grade anyway and I don't think I'm the best at science. Professor Held did a great job when giving lectures. He's very easy to get along with and only takes 3 grades which are all exams. With this being said, it is best to show up to the lectures because he will give a lot of insight on what will be on the test, sometimes word for word.

If there's one thing the TTU Biology department did right, it was hiring Dr. Held. He is such a genuine and brilliant individual. Greatest professor I've ever had. He's very forgiving with grades, gives great curves, is a great guy, and has the most engaging lectures I've experienced so far in college. 10/10 would recommend.
