Obermiller is a pretty cool prof. Nothing particularly hard in lab, as long as you do what you're supposed to. Tests aren't easy, but they're very fair. He explains things pretty well in class, and if you have ANY questions, he's always more than happy to explain everything to you til you understand it.
ITS A TOUGH CLASS IN GENERAL, ALOT OF INFORMATION TO REMEMBER. HE EXPLAINS THINGS ALRIGHT NOT THE BEST. VERY NICE AND IF YOU STUDY THE NOTES YOU WILL DO WELL.
Took in summer, very hard class because there is so much material, but if you take notes durring the power points, do the reading, and ask him questions when you are unsure, you will do fine.
I do not recommend this professor. He seems more concerned with text-messaging during labs than having us learn well. He has a negative attitude and does not inspire passion, as he often reacts to questions with a sigh, saying "it's complicated." He does not seem to realize that some of us may actually want to learn, not just receive a grade.
More helpful one on one than in class. Makes you think about things out of the box. Extremely good looking!
I didn't care for his teaching style. He was never in class and when he was there he was always leaving. The power points were ok, but they didn't really help me on the tests. He seemed to always compare us to his Biotech students and always told us how much better they were.
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR
It's worth taking his class just to look at him. he is the hottest teacher I have ever had. Good looks aside he's helpful, clear, and if you study you will definitely get an A. his quizzes are easy, and the test questions come from the quizzes. Great teacher.
He shouldn't even be a professor. Class is a joke filled with "silly" anecdotes on personal experiences and long-winded tangents about the research he has done. I considered dropping the class due to lack of structure and caring on his part.
Great professor! I took the class over summer so it was intense, but he made himself available if we needed help, was easy to understand and approach as well a giving us the tools we needed to succeed. All we had to do was use them!
great teacher
Dr. Obermiller is a really good teacher. He grades fair, test are hard, and there is extra credit. He makes the class fun. He has office hours, use them! Very slight down side, he is kind of flaky. If he is stressed he will see your questions as a burden. If you need something explained more than twice he will get impatient with you, but don?t let
I really enjoyed Prof. Obermillers class. I took it for summer so it was tedious at times but as other students have said- he is a great teacher and I liked hearing about what effect biology is having on the world today. Tests were pretty difficult, but if you go the extra mile and read the book that helps alot. I would definitely recommend him.
Lewis Obermiller is an outstanding professor!! His ambition and enthusiasm for bio technology showed everyday in class and made each lesson very intriguing. Plus his down to earth since of humor and real life scenarios made taking his course worth while.
Was an Awesome Professor, I had fun in his class. Just make sure you study, and if you ever need any help he is always available for you. He is a fair grader and also good looking so just do you work and ask questions and you should pass the class.
Dr. Obermiller was a great teacher. He really knew his stuff and shared real life events/stories with the class to make Biology fun. I recommend this class to everyone, even if you don't need it. You'll love it.
Was an Awesome Professor, I had fun in his class. Just make sure you study, and if you ever need any help he is always available for you. He is a fair grader and also good looking so just do your work and ask questions and you should pass the class.
Teacher was awesome. I learned a lot in his class. Labs were fun. He is an easy going, likeable person.
Dr. Obermiller is great for the visual learner. As more of an auditory learner, I had a difficult time. He posts all lecture notes online so it is convenient if you have to miss a class. I felt that he often taught to the brightest in the class and lectured about opinion more that material. On the positive side, he is very helpful when asked.
Had to be one of my favorite instuctors I have ever had. He has a pretty good sense of humor and wants to help you out. Very genuine person. I tried to take him again, but does not teach any of the other classes I need to take. Would highly recommend him.
didnt have to do anything for this class.he gives you lectures but he is not clear whats gonna be on the tests.i got a B because most of the people was failing.my tests were like 60-75% each.he has a good personality, and sense of humor.no homework except for online quizes.attend labs and you ll do fine in this class
He is ok but rarely help student. I don't understand him at all and really confuse about what he said.
this class is not too hard. his powerpoints were great help. he is helpful when asked. Lab was great. take use of office hours. over all i rate this class a 4... i would recommend.
He was so worthless, when he showed up for class. When he did he spent most of his time on the phone talking or texting. I guess if you want to take a teacjer that hangs out with students in Mexico for spring break drinking or is more worried about his side et projects than teaching, than he is the teacher for you!
Class goes very fast. He asks if we have questions, as he goes. He's so cute, though. He belongs on a runway, not a classroom!
Throughout this course, the professor showcased a high level of consistency; specifically, within the regions of clarity, and fairness. Consequently, this course would prove quite beneficial for all those desirous of learning, in addition to intriguing, applicable, biological lessons. Suffice to say, P. Obermiller is quite intelligent, and capable.
I felt that this class was not so hard you wanted to die but still challenging enough to be interesting. Professor Obermiller is very knowledgeable and keeps things applicaple to real life while making sure the material gets covered. He sometimes had a hard time dumbing down to our level but he never made anyone feel stupid for asking ?'s.
I really enjoyed his class he makes it fun and teaches us things we can acctually use in our everyday.miss class and you really miss out on something good and useful for the test.gives good extra credit assignments but tests and quize questions can be difficult.labs can be dull, somemore problem solving, bactiera growing, dna related stuff wud b bom!
I really liked this class. Because I am a Comp Sci major that means a lot. I think his teaching style and demeanor made the material easy to comprehend and made stronger connections. I think to improve the class the material needs to be more relatable. Whenever he applies the info to real world examples it sticks out better. Labs need improvemen
He is a really good teacher. He teaches with a lot of visuals which really helped me to learn the material.
Class wasnt that bad! Obermiller gave funny stories throughout the course that made the class more fun & prob gave more insight to future careers. Maybe someone will get a Nobel prize! Quizzes were useful. Lab manual wasn't worth paying. Let Obermiller change the lab manual. Complete lecture notes would b more helpful so we can focus on what's said
I took his bio 181 class over the summer, 8 weeks; instead of 16 (I think I would have retained more info in 16 weeks). They shouldn't offer this class in the summer. There is so much to learn and it seemed we would forget what we learned the previous week. He is a great teacher and knows what he's talking about very smart.
Quizzes and printable notes to go with the lecture were very helpful. Labs were over our heads and didn't learn anything in there. Difficult to retain so much information in 8 weeks, but that's not really to be helped. Teacher really knows what he's talking about, but sometimes goes too fast from one topic to another because of this.
I loved your class is was great and really opened my eyes new new career paths that i think i would enjoy. One thing that i can think of that will help the class would be after you teach a topic have us teach each other i found that if you teach others then you learn it better your self. Thats all i could think of but if I have more ideas I'll let
Told fun bio stories that related to real life. Better office hours would be helpful-only available 30min before class. He tends to forget that we do not spend everyday in the lab like he does so many people were confused and didnt know what to do while in lab but didnt want to ask b/c he can be short when asked questions. Overall nice guy though.
Very Hot, and his test were based on the powerpoints so get a hard drive so u never miss n e notes.. Grades fair and wasnt boring..
Dr Obermiller is excited about teaching and love Biology. The lectures are the interesting and worth attending. His test are very difficult though. If I could change anything I would like the labs to correlate to the lectures better. I would also like Web CT quiz's to explain why the answer selected is correct or incorrect.
He is an amazing professor!!
great teacher.
WORST instructor EVER! Doesn't take the time to explain the important concepts. Text messages and works on his computer during lab. WASTE of time! I didn't learn anything at all!
What a waste of time! Do they actually pay this guy to teach? Well, he just text messages during labs and doesn't even explain important BIO stuff! Quizzes have wrong answers! NOT the teacher to take EVER! I was so STRESSED on the exams. Serious DISAPPOINTMENT!
Difficult to follow and really doesn't take the time to explain when there are questions. He basically looks at you as if you should know the answers. Text messages and plays on the computer during labs. Why is he even there? If you really want to learn, he is NOT the teacher to take.
He wasn't that bad at all. He gives points for labs just for showing up. And the online homework was easy. He is really smart so it seems like he is making you feel dumb but he means well. I would recommend him. I NEVER studied and I passed with a C..
Professor Obermiller was a very good teacher. His online tests are pretty easy and his lecture tests are fairly easy as long as you pay attention to his power points. The lab is definantly the easiest part of his class.
This Professor is the greatest teacher I have ever had in my three years of college. He is very helpful. Don't listen to other bogus comments. I know the person who wrote them and they use CAPITALS all the time. Just look at all the other entries. No CAPS! You be the judge. Those negative ratings are just from a disgruntled old bag!
This class was pretty easy for the most part if you study the quizes and go to class. He makes it interesting and relates it to life so you get it. Would definitely recommend him to anyone needing to take this class.
What a joke! He does not teach. Sure he is easy. He does not have high standards. He just text messages and can't wait to get out of class. I didn't learn a thing. Worse teacher I have ever had to take! Doesn't do a darn thing to help. He doesn't care at all whether you know the material. Don't take this instructor!
This is by far the best professor I have ever had. He explains things in a way that students can relate to, and is very knowledgeable on the subject. He is always available to answer questions, and I learned a lot from the class. Definitely take this instructor if you get the chance!
This professor is awesome. He teaches on a level that is easy to follow and understand and relates it to real world topics. He also lets you use older editions of the text, which saved me a bundle, and has quizzes and audio of lectures online, which is very convenient. I highly recommend him, I just wish he taught more courses at MCC.
I can tell you Obermiller is not easy, so if you want to skate by expecting an A, you can forget it. This class requires some serious studying. Tests are the hardest part, but fair. He doesn't hold your hand in lab either. He does sometimes text, but he is always there to answer questions. I have no idea why this is an issue on some other posts.
Obermiller is the best professor at MCC, hands down. This guy knows his stuff. I googled him. He brought in a $900,000 grant for genomics, and does real research, something no other prof I have had has come close to. He relates the material in a fun way, with real examples so the class is interesting and exciting.
Excellent teacher. In his lecture and labs, he explains things clearly and answers all questions which helps since BIO 181 is a difficult class. He posts all of his lecture recordings, powerpoints, and study guides online. This is an in depth class so read the book thoroughly, pay attention, and use all of the resources that he provides.
Well, he is a great teacher because he knows what he is talking about. But he put a lot of attention to those students that are really gifted for biology.I studied very hard and got a good grade BUT ON MY OWN!!Everytime i asked something to him he just looked at me as if i was stupid...Hey im just a college girl trying to understand biology!!
Awesome teacher. Knows his stuff. Pays attention to the bio majors up front. Easy to talk to. Great eye candy. Good class to take in the summer. Not an easy A class. Lots of work.
Very intelligent professor, but he is unable to explain things on a lower level. He has a PhD in micro-biology and he always talks/teaches like everyone is on his level. If you take him for BIO 181; hang on because he goes over material very fast, and be prepared to spend a huge amount of time studying. Very intelligent just not the best 181 option
Good professor. My advice is to, show up to class though attendance is not mandatory. Make use of his powerpoints b/c that is where some of his test questions come from. Do the quizzes & xtra credit!! Attend lab. All of this got me a B even though I didn't do well at all on the tests.
Prof Obermiller is a really great teacher. he is your best bet if you want to learn as much as there is about biology. he hands out extra credit, curves grades. he knows how to explain stuff so newbies can understand. hands out a bunch of resources so you can pass the class. there is no reason u should. great teach and hot nerd. nothing greater.
Awesome teacher. He is a little rough around the edges but so nice. Very helpful. Labs easy, Tests hard. Expect to study a lot. Provides study guides and study quizzes. Drops a low grade test, curves tests and offers extra credit. All class info online including PowerPoints. Helpful and wants you to understand. Give him a try. He is worth it.
Fun, easy going guy. Tests are tough but everything on the power point in on the test. Extra credit is offered for every exam, and my advice is do, every time. It saved my butt. I do recommend this professor he is not easy but he is fair. attendance not required
Friendly, and easygoing.tests are hard, but all info is covered.the matrial is very technical, and he isn't very clear. I do not agree with his grading policy, i failed every exam and still passed with a B. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but lab attendance is. I recomend not missing a single day or you will be lost. No room for slacking either.
Any biology class you take will be hard, and if it isn't the professor isn't doing you any favors. Prof Obermiller covered everything really well, is an incredibly intelligent teacher, and I learned a lot from his class. You will need to study, and do yourself a favor and show up for the lectures so you know what to study for, and can ask questions
This teacher is awesome! The material is pretty hard and in depth so of course you have to study hard but he makes it super easy for you to pass. He constantly provides extra credit opportunities. He provides pp slides which gives all the information on the tests and quizzes. received an A and did not really try. Love this guy!
I suck at biology, but was able to pass with an "A" because of this teacher. His lectures are very understandable, and he gives out lots of extra credit opportunities. If biology is hard for you, I would take Obermiller. He's funny, too!
This class is fun and if you read all power point you will receive a good great! I got an A in this class with many extra credits. Do all extra credits can make you improve about 1 letter grade. He also has record lecture so you can review at home. Some of the exam questions are showing on webCT.
This class was super hard! You can tell Obermiller knows A LOT about biology and loves it. But the way he explained stuff when you asked him a question makes you feel dumb. If you can pay attention and study, itd be a great class. It just wasnt the class for me.
Obermiller gives worksheets and study guides on WebCT, along with videos of lectures, powerpoint slides and audio recordings. I'm pretty sure the student commenting below got a bad grade because they didn't know how to use webCT. Great professor, is very approachable and helpful. Take this guy if you want to really LEARN Biology!
Obermiller is a great prof. He explained things in a down to earth way, and puts up powerpoints, audio and video, and YES, study guides, worksheets and puzzles on WebCT to learn from. I learned a lot from this class. Not the easiest, but I am attending college to learn biology, not just be handed a grade in it.
It was a challenging class, but Dr. Obermiller made it understandable and a bit entertaining. He's nice to look at, offers extra credit for every exam, and puts study guides, crosswords, and lectures on Canvas. It is impossible to fail this class if you put in a minuscule amount of effort.
This is a challenging class that is made much easier by Dr. Obermiller. He is entertaining and explains things in a way that makes them simple to understand. He gives lots of opportunity for extra credit, and is compassionate and willing to help. I wish he taught my other Bio courses that I need!
I Could look at him all day ! hes super hot! oh and ya his class was very tough but I learned alot more from him than my last Bio professor
This class is difficult if you don't take the time to study. He makes it easy to understand, and gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. He makes his classes fun and entertaining, and he is pretty hot, too.
Took this as a hybrid class. Dr. Obermiller was quick to answer questions by email, and he was willing to help during his office hours. He has a lot of enthusiasm which is evident in his lectures and labs. It was a challenging, but highly enjoyable class. Be prepared to take time to study, and you will come out with good understanding of biology.
Dr. Obermiller is an excellent professor. He is clear and consistent. You don't have to attend class because he posts voice recordings of his lecture and the power points. The labs are by attendance. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. He is the best.
Don't take the hybrid class UNLESS YOU HAVE NO LIFE, NO JOB, OTHER HW ETC! The amt. of material per week is absolutely RIDICULOUS. I enjoy a challenge, this is just too much material I'm expected to master. His appereance is irrelevant! and he's kind of a jerk, anyway.
The hybrid course is difficult, but Obermiller made it fun and interesting! It being hard wasn't a surprise either! Obermiller sent us a breakdown of the course when we registered. In it, he said, "...if you do not have the time to devote 8-12 hours a week to this course, I strongly suggest you enroll in an in-person Bio 181 course." Nuf said!
Great teacher. He explains things so you can easily understand it. His labs are really fun and interesting. He is very patient, I even asked him question for an upcoming test in my lecture (not his lecture) and he went through it all with me. AWESOME teacher A+
His website is very organized. He post records of his lecture and power point online. He guides you through the materials by asking you question on what you already know and connect it to the new material. This makes it easy to remember the new stuff. He doesn't expect you to get the right result for lab. Do it & show up & you'll get the credit
I took this class as a hybrid. Everything was on line besides exams and some labs. I found the class easy so long as you stay on top Of studying.
Very knowledgeable professor that is willing to help. The lectures where always helpful, and Dr. Obermiller did not mind stopping to answer a question. Lab was the best lab I've had. Explains things very easy to get you on your way. With all that said this class is hard, the tests are hard, so be prepared to put in work!
Dr. Obermiller is by far one of the best instructors I have ever had. Being a little older than the average student (32) was difficult going back to school.Great attitude and great personality. Keep up the good work we need more of him in the teaching world. Anyone can get a degree in teaching but it takes someone special to teach. He's awesome.
I took his course over the summer at ASU and it has to be one of the most difficult courses ever. His lectures are interesting but when it comes to his assigned hmk(problem sets) it is hell! He only touches base on genetic in his lecture yet his hmk goes FAR IN DEPTH! Not to mention, the hmk is worth half your grade. Bottomline, take someone else!
Took this class over the summer at ASU Tempe. By far the hardest class I have taken. You will have to go to the TA'a to have them check your problem sets and the midterms kill you. A lot of stuff not covered in class will be on them. But put in the effort and you can pull off a decent grade.
Do not listen to comments below. This is an upper division biology course which needs to be taken seriously, especially over the summer. People expected tests and problem sets to be easy, but they are meant to challenge you. I couldn't stand the kids who complained. Put in the work and an A is attainable.
Took this summer class at ASU. Tests are ridiculous and problem sets are long and can be somewhat confusing. Normally, genetics would be an A or B class for me- I'll be lucky to pass this class. STAY AWAY.
I'm not sure what class the reviewer below is referring to, but the homework is actually 20%, which is not half, so perhaps this is why they are disgruntled. They can't do the math. Obermiller is a great teacher and the tests and homework are fair. Put in the work and you will do well. Don't and you will fail.
Took this class as a summer class at ASU for PA pre-req. Obermiller is not an easy "A" by any stretch, but if you put in the time, you can do well. The problem sets were challenging, but helpful for the exams. The exams are hard, but he does cover all the material for them in lecture. Great professor! I would take him again.
I took this course as a requirement for biology in the summer at ASU. I have to say that Obermiller is one of the best instructors I have had. His lectures are down to earth and explain things in a way that helps make sense of complex topics. It is a very hard course, but if you put in the time to study the material, you will do well.
Dr. O has a passion for what he does that comes through in his teaching. Does an excellent job of explaining scientific information that is easy to understand and relate to. My interst in biology and science in general has increased ten-fold since taking his classes.
Obermiller is the greatest professor I have ever taken. His lectures are clean and concise. The problem sets are hard but challenging, and Obermiller explains them well. He is always available for extra help. The exams cover the material from lecture but also make you reason. I loved this class & this prof... Kudos to you Dr. Obermiller.
Obermiller is a very difficult instructor, no doubt about it, but he does cover the material better than my previous genetics instructor (or any instructor i have had before.) and seemed to care more. It is presented in layman's terms, but it is up you to disseminate what we learned, not regurgitate it.
Professor Obermiller was very knowledgable about the subject, and I did get a pretty in-touch feel from his manner of teaching. I hadn't taken a biology class in years, so his clear manner of speaking and elaboration on certain topics was welcomed.
I have not taken science in 34 years, but I needed the credit for my degree. I came away from this class with knowledge that I did not know I could get. I see the importance of science and the importance to teach young children science so they can see the wonder of our world. I enjoyed the class. It was challenging but fun.
Very nice dude. even though the topics was not interesting to me he tried his best to make the class entertaining.
Very good instructor. Explains more complex topics well with examples on the board. He does not put any surprises on the test so it is very easy to do well. I did not understand bio in high school but now I have a much better understanding.
Great teacher. He likes to go into depth on most of the topics and will give plenty of facts that arnt needed. He is very funny and will make a boring subject more enjoyable.
Dr. O is one of the best professors I've had. His passion comes through in his teaching, and his emphasis is based on the students actually learning. He takes the time to ensure that everyone understands, and is very willing to answer any questions one has. Tests are extremely fair, but study time is needed to do well. Highly recommended professor.
Taking this class was a great experience. The teacher was very helpful and informative. He was also a really funny and energetic person which made the class twice as good.
Very high energy professor. Kept to his word and did not throw in many surprise tricks.
I took Obermiller for Biology for Non-majors 100 for summer classes at MCC. He's clear and more then welcomed to answer, related to science or not. He was very generous with the lectures and classwork. Just apply yourself, ask questions, attend lectures and you'll enjoy biology with Obermiller!
Obermiller was straight to the point and very helpful. We all new completing a class in 5 weeks was going to be challenging. He gave us the material we needed to make sure we did well on the exams. There were no surprises. He did a great job relating the material and explaining it in layman's terms.
Pretty sure this class is only taught by obermiller at ASU during summer. Nonetheless, the class itself wasnt anything unexpected. Genetics in itself can be somewhat challenging and time consuming, but obermiller did a good job at making it as painless as possible. If you can stand his somewhat snide sense of humor,i recommend taking him for BIO340
Obermiller was a great prof. He spent a lot of time helping me after class and always made his office hours. His grading was always fair and I learned a lot from his course!
His lectures are interesting. But he is really pretentious and he's grading is really bad. Don't try to argue with him because he's always right even when he's wrong
Dr. Obermiller is one of the best professors I have ever had. If you want an easy "A", take someone else, but if you want an interesting class where you actually learn something, this is the guy to take. Amazing professor, very helpful and approachable. 5 stars if you ask me. I would take any one of his classes again.
Cool teacher. He does cover all the material but it is a difficult class. He only lectures so you have to pay attention and his tests are pretty hard I'd suggest putting in a lot of study time.
One of the best instructors I have had at MCC and the best one I have had in any biology course yet! Lecture are very interesting and worthwhile. Exams are hard, but you can do well if you put in the study time and follow the lectures. He also posts videos of lectures on iTunesU which was very helpful. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Obermiller made a complicated subject more interesting and down to earth. Lectures were generally awesome and he always kept his office hours. He also records the lectures which was a big help. Highly recommended.
Professor Obermiller is a fantastic teacher. I am in Bio 205 and 201 now and I can tell you they expect you to know the info you learn in Bio 181. If you take an easy professor, good luck! You will be way behind and likely fail the classes that come afterwards. If you want to learn the material, take his class. It sure helped me!
Laid back, nice teacher, but the course materials were so unorganized. Power points didn't match the study guides, which didn't match the homework, which didn't match the quizzes, which didn't match the exams. If you don't show up for the non-mandatory study sessions, you're basically screwed.
I had a totally different experience as the person below. In fact, the study guides come from the power points and are in the same order, the exam questions are the same as many quiz questions, and the exam reviews are online in Canvas. He never gave ANY homework. They must be reviewing the wrong class because this one is the best one I have had.
Professor reviews necessary materials as expected, however, I would highly recommend asking questions (he WILL explain). Oh and he is a pleasure to look at. Hate for my semester to end after looking at him for 3 months.
loved professor Obermiller! Not the easiest class, but he offers extra credit which makes the class passable. Definitely recommend him for bio 181
Not an easy class but he gives you plenty of extra credit opportunities and a lot of resources to review the material. He gives you the powerpoints, audio and video files, etc. He comes across a little elitist when you ask questions, but he does answer everything. He doesn't seem to care much about the lab, but will help when needed.
Prof. Obermiller was awesome. His lectures are entertaining and thought provoking. All materials are available on-line including videos of lectures through iTunesU. Not the easiest, but gives all the materials you need for your future bio classes. Easier Profs may make it easy but they set you up to fail your 200+ level classes.
Obermiller can come across as a big ego about himself but he deserves it! He is so smart and wants to convey everything he knows to the students. He offers a lot of extra credit and records all his lectures. He doesn't care at all about lab, just attend and he will give you full credit for that. Very fair and laid back.
Obermiller is very helpful, always has clear answers to any questions and is willing to help you understand. He also wasn't too strict on his material, and has a pretty good sense of humor.
Professor Obermiller is a really great teacher. I learned a ton from his class and he makes a complicated and difficult subject fun and interesting. He relates the topics to current trends in biology and medicine and provides all the course materials online, including audio and video of the lectures. One of the best. I just wish he taught 182.
Great instructor. Obermiller sets up his lectures online, so you can review them. Bio 181 is a hard course, so if you are going to take it on-line, you better have the time and discipline to put into studying. The at home labs were fun and interesting. I learned a lot and saved a lot of unnecessary trips to campus. Would highly recommend!
Horrible professor. I'm a straight A student and ended up having to drop this class. Test are extremely hard.. quizzes are not like the power points he goes over in class. Worst experience..
Best professor ever!! Gives tons of extra credit. Quizzes and study guides are online, so if you don't get an good grade in his class, you either don't belong in bio or aren't spending anytime studying the material. Makes class interesting and makes you think about Biology and apply the concepts you learn not just memorize and regurgitate them.
Obermiller is a great teacher, but not easy. If you are looking for an easy A because that is what you are used to, then go elsewhere. If you are looking for a quality prof that will help you learn the concepts of biology then he is your man. Has all kinds of study material online, so use it, and if you put in the work, you will get the grade.
One of the best professors I have had. Takes time to explain the material and is available outside of class for help. All course materials are on Canvas. He also allows you to drop on the very last day, so you would never need to drop mid semester unless you just gave up. It is challenging, but do the work and extra credit and you will do fine.
Excellent Prof! Obermiller is very clear with course requirements, and is always available outside of lecture for help. He is very laid back and approachable. Tests can be hard, but all the material on the exams are covered in lecture. Very fair, a lot of your grade comes from participation and on-line quizzes you can re-take if you mess up.
I'll be honest, I have had easier classes, but not many that I enjoyed coming to lecture every day. The course is well organized through Canvas, and Obermiller makes an often boring subject more fun and interested by relating it to everyday experiences. I would highly recommend him.
Obermiller's lectures are interesting and the at-home labs are very fun and cool (I loved the de-shelled egg lab). Course is well organized with lectures on iTunes and audio on Canvas. Quizzes are self-paced on-line too. Exams are in person, but there are only four. Final isn't comprehensive. Great course and great prof. Would recommend.
I can't stress this enough...awesome professor!! Makes a complicated and often boring subject fun and interesting. Talks in a language that is understandable for a complex subject. Tests can be difficulty, but are fair, and all study materials are posted on-line, so you can study well in advance. This is the guy to take!
If you are going to take Bio 181 on-line, this is the way to do it. You have to spend time going over the videos just like you were in lecture, but the at-home labs are easy and fun and he doesn't grade very harshly. Exams are as expected from the lectures and powerpoints. Everything is online 24-7, which is awesome! Great professor as well!!
I took this from another instructor in-person and did pretty bad, so I decided to re-take it online from Obermiller. It was a great experience, better than in-person. Labs at home are fun, exams are similar to my in-person 181. Best part was the lectures are online, so I could review them whenever I wanted (you need to watch them to do well).
Best professor ever!!! Very helpful outside of class, exams are fair, all materials are on-line. Makes studying easy and at your own pace. Great guy!
Awesome course. I got really lucky with this one. Obermiller's on-line course is well organized, has all the materials on-line including notes, audio and videos of lecture, quizzes, powerpoints, etc. Lab kit is like $50. Fun at home labs, tests are like quizzes, so no surprises. Make sure you take time to watch the lectures. Highly recommend!
I didn't think I would, but I really enjoyed this class. Obermiller's lectures are interesting, and he has a great ability to talk about complex things at a level that you can relate to. Everything is online including lectures (audio and video) and powerpoints. Quizzes are self-paced online too. If you study the material you will do well.
I loved Obermiller's class!!! The lectures are great, the quizzes are online, and the labs are fun. What more can I say? If you don't want to commute to campus all the time, this is the class to take. It does require self discipline to go over the material and lectures on your own, but if you can do that, the hybrid course should be no problem.
I do not recommend taking hybrid (lecture online, lab in person)class over summer if you're a beginner in biology. His tests are extremely hard so make sure you study! But he gives a whole letter grade of xtra credit. textbooks was useless. Overall I think he's a good teacher if students take him in fall or spring(not summer)Labs r easy, just show up
The summer 181 hybrid course is fast and intense, but if you have some basic chem and bio experience (like high school), and you are prepared to spend a lot of time studing to get it over with in 5 weeks, this class is for you. Highly recommended!
I loved Obermiller's summer hybrid course. I'm pretty sure he is the only one that teaches the hybrid Bio 181. This class is the best. I finished off Bio 181 in 5 weeks over the summer (all other 181 are 8 week). It does require a ton of studying, but it was well worth it. Obermiller is a great professor and he gives a bunch of extra credit.
Awesome Teacher!!!!
Dr. O. is a wonderful lecturer and makes the material easier to understand. Don't get me wrong, biology is tough, no matter who you take, but my advice is to take Obermiller because he knows his stuff and explains it in a down to earth way instead of just making you memorize it. Highly recommended.
His lectures are very interesting and his online quizzes have the answers on easynotecards online. He's pretty funny and I would most definitely recommend him to a friend. You definitely have to study for his tests, but there are many options for extra credit
Great teacher, super helpful when you ask, but only if you ask. Took the time to sit down with me after class and go over some questions i had.
I took Obermiller's hybrid Bio 181 class. I have taken a few disorganized on-line classes, but this one is great. He uses Panopto in Canvas so you can watch lectures, see powerpoints and listen to the audio. But, you must listen to lectures and study the powerpoints to pass. Do the extra credit and go to the in-person labs and you will do well.
I liked the teacher, I really did. However, his tests were so hard and didn't really align with what he was teaching. I did tutoring and everything too. He was hard to follow unless you just naturally "get" biology already. I want to take again with another instructor who might explain things differently.
Best teacher ever! Lewis knows his stuff and is passionate about biology. He is always willing to help you if you ask but he won't just give you the answer, he makes you think about it so you can figure it out on your own. He really does care about his students and makes learning biology fun and interesting. Make sure to do the extra credit.
Obermiller was awesome. Tests aren't easy, and it is recommended you have some chemistry before you enroll in Bio 181, so if you haven't, they are even harder. He grades fairly and covers all the material on the exams in lecture. He has a good sense of humor. In fact, that alone makes you interested in coming to class. I learned a lot!
Great class and great professor. Bio 181 isn't a push over class. You need to be prepared to put in the time to study and do the assignments and lab questions, but if you do, the class is pretty easy. He covers all the materials on the exams in lecture, but you need to understand the material, not just memorize it. I wish he taught 182!
Class rocks and so does the prof. It isn't easy, but nothing worth doing ever is. You want to learn it, take this guy. You just want to pass with an easy "A" take someone else, but good luck in your future bio classes. Knows his stuff, is available all the time for outside help and is a great all around guy! I had fun and learned a lot!
Lewis makes a tough subject fun to learn. Sometimes he moves a bit fast during lecture, but he records all of them with video and powerpoint so you can watch them again if needed. He also provides ample opportunities for extra credit, which makes up for the tough exams. This class requires lots of studying, but I would definitely recommend Lewis!!!
Obermiller gives you lots of material. Make sure you use all pieces he's provided; they are extremely helpful. Utilize the book in combo with the crossword(etc), and you will succeed. Overall, his attitude says, "Listen up, if you don't pass, it's your own fault." He's a good prof, but if you don't ask for help, you will not receive it.
Amazing professor that really cares about teaching. He records his lectures so it is not necessary to attend class, but I highly recommend it. Most students were so engrossed in lectures they didn't want to leave! Tests are tough, but he will definitely review material beforehand. Funny and will take the time to thoroughly explain.
Great Professor. Great Class. Not the easiest, but if you study and do the extra credit, you will be fine. Taking basic chemistry first helps a lot.
Excellent professor. REALLY knows his stuff. He lets you know up front what he expects of you, but definitely holds you to it. This class can be relatively easy or really difficult depending on how much you know going into it. He's been my favorite science teacher hands down.
Obermiller's Bio 181 during the summer of 2014 was my favorite classes that I took at MCC, hands down. They guy is passionate about what he teaches and he wants you to succeed. He goes out of the way to meet with you for extra help and doesn't mind doing it. That's rare in a professor. Take this guy, interact with him and you will do well.
A bad professor is one that likes to show off all his knowledge and put everything in complicated jargon. A good professor puts himself in the students shoes , speaks in plain language, and makes tough concepts easy to understand. Dr. O is by definition, a good professor. He left research to teach because he sincerely loves doing it. Great guy!
Obermiller is a great professor. He is always available outside of class for help. Online isn't for everyone, but the course couldn't be laid out any better. There are crosswords, reviews, powerpoints and audio and video of each chapter. He is quick to respond to e-mails. Test are hard, but you can drop the lowest. Take chemistry first.
Dr. Obermiller is an amazing professor. He is extremely knowledgeable (as you would expect from a cancer research biologist). His class is probably the most difficult out of the 181 professors-BUT he knows he is more demanding than other professors. If you pay attention in lecture and complete ALL of his extra credit assignments, you WILL get an A.
Honestly, on-line is not for everyone. It takes a lot of discipline to do the assignments and watch lectures and youtube videos on your own, but if you have some biology and chemistry under your belt, and are willing to put in the time, this is a great class. It is organized well, assignments are worthwhile and the prof is amazing. Great class!
I took the accelerated Bio 181 Hybrid class, so I didn't see much of Dr. Obermiller in person. When I did, he struck me as very friendly, funny, and knowledgeable, but very hands-off. No help unless asked for, basically. Fortunately he gives tons of extra credit, so you're bound to do well even in this extremely fast-paced and difficult class.
I took the summer Bio181 accelerated 5 week class. It is very fast compared to the 8 week summer class. Be prepared to cover 3-4 chapters per week, but with that said if you have some bio and chem experience this class is great to get Bio181 out of the way. Super helpful, was always in his office before class, and gives lots of extra credit.
Dr. Obermiller is a really neat guy. He intentionally makes his class hard but he is also there to help every step of the way if you need it. He offers extra credit and if you do all if it, you can raise your grade a whole letter grade up. Try not to miss class and take notes! His tests come from his powerpoints.
He's AWESOME! Funny &easy to understand! Points out specific topics that will be on the test during lectures, which are VERY important! Plenty of extra credit available &he is very helpful anytime you have a question. Lots of memorization but he provides study guides &crossword puzzles for each chapter, I recommend making your own flash cards too
Terrible teacher, but assignments are easy and lots of extra credit. The tests are what you have to look out for. He drops your worst test score, one in person lab, and one at home lab. Extra credit available for every test.
Obermiller is awesome. The hybrid class assignments were very clear, lectures are online in both video and audio format. At home labs are convenient and fun. Test are tough, but if you follow the study guides and crosswords and put some effort in watching the lectures, there is no reason you should get anything less than a B. Great class!
Best science class I have ever taken!!! Obermiller is a great teacher. Most students were asking if he taught other courses like Bio 182 and Bio205 in the first week. The lectures are amazing. I learned a lot in this class. However, if you want an easy teacher, you should take someone else, but if you want to learn Biology, this is your man.
The hybrid 181 is a great way to get Bio 181 out of the way and keep a flexible schedule. The at home labs are fun and interesting and the lectures are done through Panopto and Canvas with both video and audio. Obermiller has done a great job at making a difficult course easier to learn, especially in an on-line lecture format. Great teacher!!!
Best teacher ever! I am a returning student with a degree in English looking to get into medical school. I needed the pre-reqs, biology included. Obermiller did a phenomenal job of prepping me for almost all the questions on the biology section of the MCAT, which I rocked. If I had taken an easier teacher, I never would have done so well!!!
So, let me be crystal clear. Obermiller is the bomb. The class is well laid out and well organized. Lectures are on line but labs are in person. The lab materials are excellent, and all materials you need to succeed are provided on Canvas. This is one of the best hybrid classes I have ever taken. Just make sure to watch the lectures!
This is an excellent class and an excellent professor. You want an easy "A" this isn't the guy for you, but if you want to learn biology take him. Amazing lectures and always there if you need help outside of class. You won't be disappointed.
Great guy and great class. Tests can be hard if you don't do the homework assignments and reviews, but otherwise it is actually an easy class. I would definitely recommend him. I think he is one of the better teachers in the department, and I loved the lectures. Make sure you take advantage of office hours as well! He is very helpful.
Dr. Obermiller is great! His lectures are interesting and always funny. He give tons of extra credit and the labs are super easy. My biggest complaint is that he takes forever to post grades on canvas, but it's an easy A; I ended up watching lectures the day of tests and still aced every single one.
Had him for BIO181. It was a pretty tough class, but with all the extra credit he gives, I managed a B+. There are a lot of online quizzes, but you have multiple tries to get the grade you want. He's really chill when it comes to labs, and attendance for lectures is not mandatory, for he records all his lectures. Good teacher, but expect to work.
Great professor and great class!!! You should expect to do work, but in what universe would you not expect that in a majors biology course? If you miss something during lecture they are also recorded on Canvas. Do the assignments and study the PowerPoints and you will do fine. Very approachable and always available for help outside of class!
You must read the book to keep ahead and you must come to class. He is a good teacher and is very helpful.
I took this class online and although the lectures were interesting the exams have nothing to do with them. Study campbell biology chapter reviews online to pass the tests. There is lots of extra credit and you get three try on the quizzes so you almost always get 100%.
Great professor and great class. Took this online because it fit in my schedule. The in-person exams are from the lecture material so no surprises there. Quizzes are online, and half the labs are in person. He is always available for outside help either in person or email. I loved the lectures. Very interesting. Highly recommended!
Obermiller is an awesome instructor and an all around nice guy. Everything you need to pass this class is online so if you don't pass it's on you. The hybrid class is great for my schedule. I only have to come to campus a few times during the semester which I love! If you are self motivated take this class. You won't regret it!
Great prof and great class. Everything you need is online including lectures. I learned a lot in this class. I definitely recommend this class if you don't mind pacing yourself. If you aren't self-disciplined enough to watch the lectures twice a week, I would take an in-person class. Regardless, I would take him again in a second.
Great hybrid class. Half of the labs are in-person, half at home or in the study lab. Lectures are on-line. I love this because I can rewind and re-play things I missed unlike a traditional class. The drawback is you can't ask questions during lectures, but he responds very quickly to e-mail and was always available for outside help.
Amazing professor! Explains complex concepts in simplest ways, provides all types of media materials including video lectures, gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit.
Awesome Porf. There when you ask quesions, but you gotta approach him (he is cool). Watch letures, at least two a week to stay up, do the quizzes and assignments and you will do fine. Takes tough subjects and explains them in easy to understand terms. You will learn in here and take it with you to higher level classes. Would take again.
Great Prof and Great Class. Tests are hard, but labs and extra credit offset that. I learned a lot. He does a great job!
He is awesome Easy Alot offfffffff extra credit like alllooooot
Obermiller is a great professor. I was worried about taking BIO since I have never taken it before, but he makes it easy to understand. You do have to study but as long as you do that and do his online quizzes and extra credit, you will pass.
Great professor! I would take his class again in a heartbeat! He has online lectures through Panopto. You can also download the lectures and listen to them anywhere you go. I download mine and listen to them during my hour cycling class. Win! Win! There is ALOT of extra credit available, its a life saver! Lewis O. must if you need Bio for Majors!
Great class and great instructor. Very friendly and down to earth. Always available outside of class for help. I learned a ton. Lots of extra credit. Hard exams, but hey, it is Major's Biology. If you study and do the work, you can easily get an A. I would definitely recommend him.
I don't recommend his online lectures The volume isn't great and when students ask him a question on the video you can't hear it so you aren't sure what he's answering. One student asked him a question on one of the videos and he said something like, 'I'm so glad you asked that! The answer is yes." So I was totally lost on what was going on.
Great Professor and Great Class. Highly recommended!
Excellent class. I took this online. There are multiple resources for the lectures, including audio files, panopto, separate video files, and other tools. I learned a lot. Highly recommended!
Excellent professor. Exams are hard but there is a ton of extra credit. Not an "easy A". You have to work for it. Would take again in a heartbeat.
Great Class. I learned a lot from Dr. Obermiller. He is very approachable and explains things very well. If you don't understand something, just ask him or go to his office hours.
I took the Hybrid class. total of 14 labs. 7 at home labs and 7 in class. In class labs are easy point to receive. lets you miss one at home lab and one in class lab without penalty. Lectures are extremely long about 1:30 or 2 hours. Makes you work for the grade you want but give a lot of extra credit
Makes you work but as long as you do what you are supposed to do and make sure you understand the material the class isn't that hard. Professor Obermiller gives you plenty of extra credit so there shouldn't be a reason why you don't pass. He makes the class enjoyable with his humor.
I had Lewis for Bio181. Nice thing about his class he doesn't take attendace for lecture and has the powerpoints online so you can decide if you want to show up or not. Tests were pretty difficult, I felt like they didn't have any correlation with the study guides. Labs are super easy, as long as you show up you'll get full points
Awesome class. I really learned a lot, and Obermiller's lectures are good and entertaining. Exams are difficult but this is a major's biology class, so that is to be expected. Lots of extra credit! I would take again in a second!
I really loved this class!!! One of the best online classes I have had. The exams are hard, but they make you think, and there is tons of extra credit. Also, the labs are super easy. Great professor and great class!
Lewis is a great professor, one of the best I have ever had. He knows his stuff and you will learn a lot from this class. He is super chill and easily approachable. I totally loved every lecture!
I really enjoyed this class and with it being mostly on-line, it allowed me to have a more flexible schedule. Obermiller rocks!
obermiller made taking 181 easy as pie! he's super funny and keeps you entertained while learning I had to take this over the summer to get into 201 but I would have enjoyed being in his entire semester class. his class is the best science class I have taken and he will respond quickly and efficiently if you have any questions outside of class.
Loved Obermiller! Easy going & understanding. Takes the time to make sure you understand the material, and makes class enjoyable. Great guy!
Dr. Obermiller is an amazing professor for all things biology. He speaks in simple metaphors instead of complex jargon. He gives lots of opportunities to get the points you need and is fairly forgiving if you make mistakes. You must actively study the material, but he is very flexible outside of class. Chili pepper deserved!
Lewis is an excellent professor, down to earth, easy going and easy to approach. Biology is not an easy subject to learn, I took it online, he makes the subject understandable, his power points are excellent, the audio versions are good. You must study to do well, the tests are difficult, but he gives you every opportunity to pass. Take Him!
Took the hybrid class (online class w/ the exams & half the labs and in person), it was a very difficult class for sure, but there is tons of extra credit, 75 points total. I did all the labs besides two (you can miss two with no penalty), did all the quizes (all answers on quizlet), did the extra credit, but FAILED every exam (all 4), and got a B.
I took Obermiller because I needed my science credit fulfilled and it was wonderful. Obermiller is very understanding and human in regards to grading and make-up opportunities. It is impossible to fail his class (atleast BIO 181). Nothing but respect for this man and his method of teaching. Would take him again everytime.
Lets face it, BIO181 is hard no matter who you take it with. But with Obermiller you dont need the book and showing up for the in-class labs is pretty much guaranteed full points (just sign the attendance chart). And hes a good lecturer. If I were to name one bad thing, its that hes a slow grader. Very slow. Not for the anxious or impatient.
Tbh, class is easier in person. You have to buy a $50 lab kit for the at-home labs and take selfies of yourself working on them. Takes MORE time. You need to stay on task too. You miss a lot w/online lectures. Never used the book. Use flashcards for obermiller study guides (flashcardmachine), cw Vocab on Quizlet, MC practice ?s on easynotecards
Awesome class and great professor. Hybrid classes aren't perfect for everyone, but if you need a flexible schedule, then this class is for you. Super easy grader for labs. As long as you do the work, you usually get full credit. Exams are a difficult, but this is a difficult class no matter who you take. I would recommend this class to anyone.
I took the Bio 181 hybrid class. It is great for someone who has a busy schedule. Lectures and class material are online. You have to come in for some labs, but they are every other week. He drops one of those labs so you can skip in a pinch. This class was perfect for me since I work as well. Great lecturer. Makes complex material simple.
Dr. Obermiller is everything Biology. It is a very hard subject but he made it sound easy. Gave clear and simplified lectures. Tests were hard and required a lot of critical thinking. Lab attendance guarantees full credit. Extra credits to boost your grade. Easy online quizzes. He is smart, helpful & approachable. I have high regards for this man!
Obermiller is a biotech god! If you ever doubt pursuing a career in science take his class! He spends time grading everything you turn in and the 212AB and AC lab classes I took were a once in a lifetime opportunity. This is the best bioscience education you can get at a community college in the valley. He will always inspire me to do greater.
Take his class seriously. LOTS of what you learn WILL be reviewed and builded on. Now in BIO205, I realize he did a great job preparing me and I recommend taking micro the semester right after so the material is semi-fresh in your mind. He grades in grading periods, which means he grades everything all at once and only after each exam.
This is an online class, so it takes a lot of discipline to keep up with all the material and not try to cram everything in at the last minute. With that said, Obermiller does a great job at bringing difficult concepts down to earth. exams are hard so keep up with the pace he sets and you will do fine. Also, do ALL the extra credit he gives.
Took the hybrid online lecture/in-person lab version. There are a ton of extra credit opportunities and tons of materials to help you prepare for exams. If your final exam grade is higher than one of your midterm grades, the final exam grade will replace it, which can bump your grade big time.
Amazing professor. He understands life is happening outside the classroom. If you follow the syllabus, show up for labs, turn in assignments and do the extra credit he allows there is literally no way for you to fail his class. He has an odd sense of humor, which I would expect no less from a science professor. I also retained what I learned.
Lots of extra credit opportunities (UTALIZE THEM ALL). The exams are hard. Heres a tip: exam questions are in the book as homework questions (this will help you). He also curves every exam. Obermiller is very inspirational. He talks about the reaserch he's done as a scientist. Definitely a good person to get a professional recommendation from.
Obermiller is awesome! Great teacher, knowledgeable, and very funny! His tests are difficult and a big portion of the grade so heads up.
Had an ok experience in this class, the lectures are outdated, and you are pretty much on your own throughout the semester. Tests are a big portion of your grade, and you have to study to pass. He does give plenty of extra credit options which is nice.
Pretty lecture heavy, but manageable. The at-home labs were straightforward and interesting to do. The exam averages were low, but there's +10% extra credit per exam. If your memorizing-techniques are bad, then you need to strengthen them. Even if they're good, the questions are nitpicky: you need a solid intuitive understanding of each concept.
A strong understanding of biology and chemistry needed beforehand. Obermiller is a smart individual however his teaching style and course is far from a level 100. The online section has hours of outdated 2021 lectures that take roughly 3-4 hours a chapter. 4 exams make your entire grade. Not a bad professor, be cautious if you're a beginner.
Obermiller is a great professor. Always available and made difficult topics understandable. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not for you, but if you really want to LEARN biology, take Obermiller. Everything he covered was covered again in Micro and Anatomy. Lots of my classmates who took an easy professor for 181 regretted it.
This professor is very difficult due to his lack of lecture material. The slides give a lot of information but a lot of it doesn't seem to match the quizzes or exams. I have asked for help on multiple things and all I get back is a very short / somewhat aggressive response. He just seems like he is too busy to actually teach an online class.
Id say this class was about average when it comes to professors. Lectures were boring and kinda droned on but the labs were interesting and fun. There's opportunity for extra credit so that was nice. I recommend studying quite a bit if you haven't taken any biology before, as I hadn't. If you put in effort it's definitely a passable class.
Took Bio 240 online. The course is laid out well. Obermiller makes a complex topic easily understandable by relating it to everyday concepts. I enjoyed the lectures. The problem sets can be tricky but he was always available during office hours to help figure out the ones I was stuck on. I would take it again for sure! I learned a lot!
Obermiller is super knowledgeable in this topic. He explains difficult concepts by relating to their uses in the medical and scientific fields, not doing just some regurgitation. Whether a farmer, cancer researcher, medical professional or a neuroscientist, you will need to know genetics, and if you want a great instructor this is your person.
I was just in his 5-week BIO 181 class and I loved it. He has a Ph.D and is very knowledgeable. He worked in cancer research and genetics, so he had many real-world connections to the material he was teaching, which was helpful, but made the class extremely interesting. If you listen to lectures and do the work, you will be fine.
It was a lot of work. Professor explained concepts well, but the lectures were WAY too long. Like 3 hours per chapter. A lot of tangents and information that we never needed/used. For a condensed course that requires a faster learning pace, a faster teaching pace would be nice. The lectures felt like a 16week course, but it was 5 weeks. Caution.
Professor explains concepts well, but lectures can drag on. Labs are engaging, and extra credit opportunities help offset the difficulty. Using unstuck ai alongside the textbook proved beneficial for study prep. Overall, a manageable course with an attentive instructor.
Professor Obermiller is an outstanding professor that I have ever had the privilege of learning from. His lectures are engaging, well-structured, and thought-provoking, making the material come to life in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. Professor Obermiller goes above and beyond to support his students and help his students succeed.
best teacher ever. Ended up a biology teacher motivated mainly from Dr. Obermiller's class.
Loved Dr. Obermiller. He is a great professor for anyone new to biology, and the online lectures he posts on YouTube are lifesavers in my opinion.
