This class made me want to learn latin.
Fun class, now 100-level.Odd but friendly little man.Very knowledgeable.

Love this man. If I had been born twenty years ago......
very intelligent, captivating lectures that hold your attention, amazing
if you are prepared to work hard then go for this class...if not, DON'T take it!
Excellent teacher. You need to be a memorizer for this class
Lewis stiles is super cool!
if you don't know roman history, don't take greek history and vice versa.
Does everything possible to get you 100%. Good guy! Makes 3hr classes fun.
lazy = do brutal, keener = get 95+, memorize and practice. Engaging prof.
If you are interesting in the subject, this is the guy to take it from...
L. Stiles makes this an incredibly applicable class. Made me see the world in a new light.
He knows a crazy amount about Latin. Makes me look forward to memorising declensions and conjugations.
Brutal. Took a class based on Greek Civ, and made it into a class based on Greek Lit. Waste of time.
Don't be fooled. Its a easy class (there are no hard concepts) but requires time and work. Showing up to class will help you in memorizing the exceptions. Medical terms may help you later in life who knows. Very nice and aproachable prof.
very helpful prof. A LOT of memorizing. Flexible marking scheme. Can be a very tough class even if you're a memorizer.
Good professor, very clear on what he wants, flexible with marks, lots of memorizing, easy to approach (he says to call 24hrs a day--wow!)
Great prof, hard marker though. definitely worth your time. If you are at all interested in Greek Culture and literature, take this class.
Engaging class, made Latin Poetry readable. If you do your work you'll do deadly in the class. I looked forward to class, too bad it's over!
Awesome prof!!! Very funny, helpful. Made me love epic poetry that I read and hated with other profs.
I loved this class, it was a lot of work, but easy. He is a good prof, a little eccentric, but that is what I liked about him.
He was great. Easy to understand, easy marker. Listen up and you will do good.
In his class you read a lot of material, discuss a lot of material, then spew it all back on the final exam. Must work to get good mark.
Just memorize and you're set. If he likes an argument you make over "a mistake" he'll give you marks anyway. Careful for some of the med terms, he does use some of the ones that are not in the text (ie on the derivations!!) Love this guy
An awesome prof! Inspired a sick and twisted love of Latin in his students. Who knew one could learn to love to decline nouns?
Excellent Prof. Easy to listen to. My 3 hr evening class flew by. Lots of memorizing, but if you like that the class is easy. He likes to use all the little exceptions on tests so make extra note of them. Great class for pre-pharmacy!
He's amazing, he takes best 2 out of 3 tests, but if your average of your tests is lower than ur final, he will take the final out of 100. Easy class, i have a bad memory but still came out with fairly good mark, just need to make good associations.
I thought I was a good memorzier until I took this class. Way to much work to be considered a first year class. Don't take it unless you have a very open schedule and can spend some time in his office sucking up for marks. Terrible is all I can say.
took me 15 mins to memorize the first chapter. Got a 98 in the class. Too easy.
I really liked Lew. He's such a funny, strange man. He'll bend over backwards for the students, very laid back, and he knows his stuff inside and out. Explained everything so thoroughly you almost didn't need to read it! If I take another classics class, I'd like it to be with him.
In the words of John Keats: "Oft of one wide expanse had I been told / That deep-brow'd Homer ruled as his demense; / Yet did I never breathe its pure serene / Till I heard Stiles speak out loud and bold" If you want to learn to love Homer, Stiles is your man.
An easy class taught by an excellent prof. He's a funny prof who knows his stuff. He's very approachable and is willing to help.
I'm a bit of slug with languages, but I could really go for Latin because of this guy.
excellent
A wonderful educator. He's humourous, intelligent, and deeply interested in the things he teaches. He will bend over backwards to help you. He truly cares about his student's progress and teaches in a crystal-clear and entertaining way. He is highly recommended.
The best class ever taught by the best prof ever! He wrote the book. Easy because its fun week in and week out because of the prof jokes and explaination of material. I love his answering machine message and it makes fun to call him. He is very approachable and helpful. I recommend taking any class with him that he teaches. Good prof.
Good class but not as much of a breezer course as ppl would lead you to believe. Great prof...helpful and clear. occasionally a bit wishy washy on what he says but generally fair in assessing when he has made a mistake.
Nice. Objectives laid out, and exam mark reflected your ability to meet those goals. Nice Job. Still having regular smoke breaks???
Good prof, need to keep up with the material or your screwed. Text is written a little above everyone--in some respects-- and he admits but listen in class and you'll do fine. The "extras" about word origins was kinda cool, learned a lot on the side.
BEST PROFF EVER! I love him he is great! Always willing to help whenever you need. If you have a chance to have a class with him DO IT! One word...FABULOUS.
I think everyone basically summed up everything to say about Professor Stiles. To be perfectly honest, i loved everything about this course and the professor. I loved his teaching methods, his personalty, his wisdom, basically as much as a student can legally love a professor. This class was the highlight of my semester. Definately worth taking!!!!
Great class. He's a good prof. Do not hesitate about taking the class. What sucks though is you have a huge class of 300 people and after every exam the class can "appeal" answers. And you always get these dumb idiots who ask stupid, meaningless questions that are either irrelevant or have already been asked. And the class goes on forever.
This is a great prof and a really great class. At times the classes can be unbearably long especially when a lot of time gets wasted. But still a great experience. There's quite a bit of memorization but if you do it, it's possible to do really well.
Interesting teacher can tell he really cares about students, always made me look at what I was reading in a different way.
Great Prof - will do everything he can to give students a good mark! Spend lots of time memorizing material, make note of little "extra's" - they are on the exams....Makes 3 hours fly by!!
Loved the prof, a funny guy that made class so interesting. I actually looked forward to a 3hour class. He loves his work and is willing to take phone calls whenever if you need help. Make sure you study the text in depth. Overall great class, great prof.
Awesome class. There were 3 tests and he takes the best 2 marks. Easy if you are good at memorizing stuff
I took both CLAS 110 and 103 with Lewis, and he was awesome both times. He is an excellent speaker with clever and memorable anecdotes, and a genuine love of academics. He is by far my favorite professor so far in my university career...this coming year, I am taking 2 more of his classes and will follow up with further comments.
He is a very intelligent man who has a great sense of humor. He is very helpful and makes the class very enjoyable, just make sure you study and understand concepts and you will do well in this class. He is very helpful in trying to understand concepts
The man's a legend. You won't be disappointed.
Brilliant man!
Lewis is brilliant. He understands language down to the littlest details. I'm sure people find him a bit hard to follow at times but his class is really useful. He's also very flexible with his marking scheme.
I don't if there are two Lewis Stiles, but the guy I have is not good. His lectures are so unorganized and repetitive. He is super lazy. We essentially made the midterm and final for him and he had a marking assistant. Also, the marks were not justified and everyone did horribly. I love Mythology but hated this class.
Lewis was a nice guy but the class was hard. I put a lot of effort in and ended up with a high 70. He has weekly quizzes, a midterm and a final. He only gives 90's to ppl who present an idea which he might read in a journal which is kind of ridiculous for a first yr class. Not a mark booster if thats what your looking for.
Lectures for the 1st month of class were terribly frustrating, since he's repetitive about useless info. Was very interested in the class, but for the most part he hasn't taught much, since you must learn everything from the text. I'm a 3rd year and this class will likely be my lowest mark, b.c. quizes are completely unfair and 20% of ur final mark
Love mythology, hated this class. Not clear on what is expected on exams until after the fact. Provides no help if you talk to him after class in terms of what you could do to improve on the next exam. Lowest grade I've received in 4yrs of University.
The way to pass his mythology class: show up Mondays and read the text book. His exams were fair and the fact that there were no essays or papers for the class was a stress releiver!
2 midterms worth 30%, takes the hightest mark of the two and a final that is worth 70%. Good class and he's funny as well but very unorganized and what's expected on the exam is not known until after the fact. The material pretty straight forward. Go to class since he changes a LOT of stuff in the textbook (rather than just making a new edition)...
Really great instructor. He covers a lot of material and takes time during the class to make sure everyone is on track. The midterms were difficult based on the nature of the material, but he allowed us to "appeal" our marks and lightened up his marking methods on the final. Very interesting and useful class even if you have no interest in medicine
Nice guy. Unorganized. Not very clear on what he wanted on midterm and final.
Fantastic Prof and the happiest man on campus! He made going to an 8:30 class an easy choice. However, the entire course is about memorization, if thats not your strong point, you will not do well.
What a guy! So friendly and intelligent - what more can you ask for in a prof. Don't take this class as an "easy elective", take it because you want to learn to apply medical terminology. Very fair class if you put in the work!
I loved Lewis as a prof! He is super down to earth, and is obviously very passionate about this subject. His enthusiasm is what made the course for me. However, this is not an easy class. You have to pay attention, do the readings, and provide your own opinion on them. Had I taken this from another prof, I doubt I would've stayed in it. He's great!
He is a very nice guy and knows his stuff very well. He goes through the material quite slowly, but really wants to make sure that you understand it well. He can be very unorganized and has trouble explaining concepts and clarifying things with students. I find that students are asking the same questions over and over again. But overall good guy!
Great professor, funny guy! Really approachable. The class is basically all memorization. After midterms you get to argue your marks to increase them which can sometimes get annoying and is very time consuming. I found the class to be extremely easy and interesting and would definitely recommend it
Stiles is a wonderful, hilarious crazy man. He genuinely wants you to do well, and is eager for student participation. I took Med. Terminology and found it difficult because I have trouble memorizing straight terms. However I had friends who received high 90's marks because they could memorize very well.
Lewis is a genuine, passionate instructor and an amazingly talented one at that! Every topic he brings up, you can see a spark light up in his eyes, the most amazing instructor I have ever had the pleasure to have, I thoroughly enjoyed his class- he gave easy topics, was lenient in marking and was such a good teacher that you still learned it all!
Likes to joke around. The textbook is helpful if you don't know about Greek myths or any of the characters in them. Isn't hard when it comes to test. Attendance isn't a must - just read the textbook. Can't stay on topic very much, but normally when he digresses he makes it funny.
The best professor ever!!
This class requires a lot of reading and understanding of classical myths. There aren't any assignments and Lewis is obviously into the subject he teaches. Sometimes he goes off tangent or gets distracted and it's hard to stay focused in his classes.
Unclear on what is really required for tests. You basically have to memorize the entire book, and have an opinion on it. Much of the topics talked about in class don't end up on tests, yet things that are briefly mentioned do end up on there. There's not a lot of clarity as to what areas you should be focused on reading.
Some days it can be confusing but you can tell he tries his absolute hardest to make sure you understand. Always available to talk to and encourages it. Classes are never boring but you need to put a lot of work in if you want to get good marks. It's all about knowing terms and how to apply, start memorizing in advance, it will give you advantages!
Lewis was such an AMAZING professor! I was always so inspired by his intense passion for classical mythology. Lectures were fascinating + I always really looked forward to his class. Incredibly kind, genuine, helpful, and approachable; he is honestly the kind of professor you only see in movies. Highly, highly recommend. Take this class!
Toughest marker ever! I don't think he got the memo that this is only a 100-level class, in a department no one cares about. No need to mark the exams as if it's the medical school entrance exams Stiles
I have only praise for Mr. Stiles and his teaching style, he truly cares about the learning of his students. He is one of those professors that you really want to do well for, as you respect him so much you don't want to disappoint him. His exams are fair, and with a little effort a good grade is easily obtainable. Passionate, wonderful man!
Lewis was truly one of the most amazing profs I have ever had! His exams are super fair and he is so incredibly passionate about what he's teaching. I highly recommend this course.
homeless man or Lewis? It is hard to tell by the eccentric demeanor of this man. However: absolutely hilarious, excessively passionate, and consistent class structure! If you don't do well on a midterm, you can redeem yourself on the other midterm or the final, and drastically improve your mark. However, know your material and know it well.
Lewis is a great prof! This class is all about being able to memorize and apply the rules and concepts. Got confusing at times and gets off topic and rambles, but everything he says has meaning. Probably the most use out of a textbook I've ever gotten. Put in the work and you can get an A. He lets you appeal your grades and make up for a bad mark.
He is enthusiastic about everything he teaches. I'll be taking my fourth class with him this next term. Flash cards are really useful for this course and the textbook is mandatory even though he'll get you to cross out things
continuation of 103. goes more specific but since the class size is significantly smaller he can help you out more. he is really understanding about how language changes and just over great prof. eccentric and passionate
READ THE TEXTBOOK and keep up with readings. I love Stiles as a professor and would highly recommend taking a class with him
Flashcards are your friend. Great Prof and a great intro class if you're interested in entering the health field some day.
Stiles was very passionate about what he was teaching. However, lectures were often poorly organized and he tends to go on many tangents. The first midterm it is clear what is expected, but when you get your test back he will take 5 lectures just to go through the answers. Then he runs out of time and you are on your own for the next midterm.
CLAS 103 is a great class to take. Lectures are engaging, midterms and finals are fair, and he gives clear expectations of what is needed on tests. If you put in the effort, ask tons of questions, and memorize the material regularly you are set to receive a very good grade in this class.
The final was the easiest of all the tests. A friend of mine said that he was way harder on this class this term than when they took it last year. He's not a bad guy and really wants to help his students. Be prepared to memorize. The textbook is your best friend! Do the exercises, they are definitely worth it. Overall I'd say he's a decent prof.
best guy and best pants
I really liked this class, mainly because of Lewis. He went over everything very slowly so if you weren't understanding something you could ask questions. Almost always hung around after class in Arts Cafe if you wanted to go over anything. You do have to put in some effort to memorized everything. He really wants everyone to do good in the course
Amazing prof. Does everything in his power to aid you on concepts you are not clear on. Very insightful, fair exams and has a good sense of humour.
Builds a great rapport with his students and will make connections between the material he's teaching and the students' interests. He breaks down difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand and apply. Easy going and understanding, but you need to do your work and show up to class. Would love to take another class with him.
The best professor I had so far at the u of s. He is clear about what he expects, great with explaining concepts, and genuinely cares about his students and their learning. If you show up to class, watch the videos, do the work, and take the time to find all the tiny rules in the textbook you should expect to come out of the class with a 90+
I took Legal Terminology with him and he was such an amazing prof! He wants his students to succeed and does everything in his power to help them do so! The class had a bit of content, however Lewis makes the content easy and fun! For sure would take a class with him again in a heartbeat. Do recommend.
Stiles really teaches well. He explains the tricky concepts, and emphasizes the main ideas and points of the textbook. He definitely wants students to do well in his class. If you put in the time in his class you will do well. You will always find in the Arts Cafe.
Really enjoyed his class. He is super interesting and very passionate about what he teaches. I took this as a night class, and most people left halfway through class during break and it didnt make a difference. Make sure you read text chapter before you have a quiz. He has lots of bonus mark options
Quite easily the best professor ever!
Stiles is clearly passionate about the topic and knows what he's talking about! He wanted us to do well, and made it easier for us when possible, but I still personally struggled with grasping the material. It's lots of memorization so if you're more of a general concept/English/Sociology type person, you may find this class tricky.
Lewis is easily the best professor ever! He made his classes super enjoyable, and he is a super funny and caring man. He genuinely cares how youre doing in the course and is very accessible outside of class, and is always willing to answer any questions you may have. Would definitely take a class from him again in a heartbeat!
Easy class, just make sure to memorize everything and you can get at least a 90.
Took his Legal Terminology course strictly online. He explained the concepts well and supplies the textbook and all practice questions for you, plus extra help sources should you need. Very approachable and humble guy, answers emails quickly and cares about his students. Easy credit if you do the practice questions and prep well for the exams!
Structured almost exactly the same as CLAS103. Textbook is useful to elaborate on some things the prof doesn't quite get to in the videos. Do what you have to in order to memorize all given terms and formulas. Biggest issue was the way he speaks, being a little too "technical" and sometimes confusing. Otherwise, great professor and class.
He is a great professor for Latin courses, as he really understands the material well and wants to help you understand too.
Very disorganized class that is way to confusing for a 101 level elective. 103 is so much better because the rules and exceptions are clearly laid out unlike this guy who merges 2 courses together and expects us to know every single detail.
Lewis Stiles claims that he can be reached outside of class but he never did. Due to this there were no clear expectations. Over half the people failed the first midterm and his solution was to "watch the lectures" that were years old and so confusing and because we could not reach him, we were left to fend for ourselves. Avoid this class.
i really tried my best but he expected at least 6 hours of work/studying for his class per week and his material didn't give a lot of support. if you don't get it off the bat, you're not going to get it at all. he seems really sweet but this class was NOT for me. i was one of the few to BARELY pass the midterm. 32/65 people failed :D
Looking for an easy elective? DO NOT TAKE CLAS 101. It is a mess, terribly organized, and incredibly convoluted. The professor explains everything in the most overcomplicated way, and you'll end up more confused than when you began. It is a 40/60 midterm and final, and more than half of the class failed the midterm. Choose peace, avoid CLAS101.
Stiles is a passionate professor who cares about student success. While the content can be tricky, he makes it engaging and provides helpful resources. Using unstuck ai alongside the textbook and practice questions really helped me ace the course.
Took this class thinking it would be a good elective and I was very wrong. The material posted online is so unorganized and overwhelming I couldn't even force myself to learn it all. Ended up failing the class because It was too late to withdraw and I just couldn't learn this useless material. Save yourself and take an easier elective!
The textbook for the class is riddled with grammatical and spelling errors. It is also formatted in the most un-user-friendly manner one can imagine. The class as a whole is fine and the material isn't too hard but the manner it is presented in makes it so much more work than it should be. Medterm is the website used for tests and is rough.
