nice guy
He is an intelligent professor, but he cannot convey the course material and his teaching skills stink. He lectures and rarely works out any problems in class.Be prepared to teach yourself.Do not take him!

nice, but too difficult for me
He is a great guy, but expect to teach yourself in his class.
Get out of his class asap if you are, he is really not a good teacher, he needs to teach GEN CHM II, at the rate he goes.
Doesn't have good teaching skills. He never works out the problems for you and it's hard to understand him. Horrible sense of humor. Expect to teach yourself. I do no recommend taking him.
He is a very knowledgable professor. He has a PhD in organic chemistry from UCLA. The problem is... he has a difficult time conveying his knowledge to his students (he does try though). But if you take his courses, expect to teach yourself the book.
I'd agree with the other students comments. Dr./Professor Ming comes off as a nice gentleman who contains a great deal of knowledge but he unfortunatly does not have the teaching skills to convey his knowledge to his students.
Some people just weren't meant to teach..Prof Ming has a hard time conveying information and even when asked to explain things during office hours he just can't explain it on a undergraduate level..find another Prof if possible
Very nice guy but I agree with everyone else. He has very broken english and runs off on tangents. If you like teaching yourself stick with Ming. Otherwise you're screwed!
He means well, but his quizzes are outrageous compared to those of the other chem professors and he doesn't even finish teaching all the material before the test. Do not take him unless you have to and even then, do as I did and attend someone else's lecture and only go to him for the quiz.
You can't understand what he's teaching. He goes of on tangentes. Just looking at his test will give you a headache. you don't know where to even begin studying for the test.
He knows his stuff, but he really can't teach worth anything. I think he's teaching as a last resort, which is reflected in the student's grades and attitide towrads learning. DO NOT sign up for his class!
Ming has a thick accent and does not relay his info. at all! I've never had chem and had to teach myself EVERYTHING! However, the way he grades makes it easy to pass...so if you want frustration give it a try, my advice is go straight to Chem 1 or don't take Ming.
HORRIBLE.. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.. U DONT LEARN ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!
worst teacher I think I have ever had.
The worst tecaher i've ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM, unless you like teaching yourself. HE teaches from a power point presentation, you can't undertand him and he doesn't work ANY examples. He is porly prepared for class which makes the test a nightmare.
Failed this class! Professor Ming definitely wasn't meant to teach...he doesn't know how to convey information to students and doesn't work any example problems in class. He lectures from powerpoints and none of the information covered in class shows up on the tests. Run from this professor..FAST!
This is the absolute worst teacher! Trying teaching chem II to yourself because he won't teach you anything. He doesn't even want to teach. He has to to be able to do research. He is very unwilling to help any students or perform examples of any kind. Do not take him at all costs!!
Teaches Johnston's material, and not very well at that. Offers no help in class or online. Doesn't prepare you for Johnston's exams and says that "All students suck" and that "All professors suck". Well, he couldn't be more right on the latter.
Very good prof, esp when it comes to kinetics; he has one of the easiest accents in the department (until 4th year). If you have an interest in chem or any post grad study take him.
If you would like to fail this class take this guy.
You can do well in this class if you read the book, visit Johnson's website and/or class, and don't show up to Ming's classes.
He seems like a nice guy, but he is a horrible teacher. If you are good at teaching yourself, then his class if for you becasue he doesn't take attendance like some of the other teachers. The best thing to do to pass this class is read the book and do the chapter problems. I only went to class 3 times, but I read the book and got an A+.
worst teacher Ive had in my life, and I usually one to give the benefit of the doubt, but he sucks...he told us the first day of class that he hates teaching, but he has to if he wants to be able to do his research...
he's AWFUL! he doesn't explain concepts/math or anything. basically you teach yourself. hates teaching and people going to his office hours. find a tutor if you take him cause he sucks. he doesn't post study guides till the day of the exam, sometimes doesn't event tell you there's an exam. takes him a week to post the keys. RUN!!!
Awful Instructor! Rambles on about his research in Alzheimer's Disease. Every other phrase out of his mouth is "...and this is what you need to pay attention to." Does not do practice problems AT ALL. Only take this class if you like teaching yourself. p.s. He takes attendence at random.
I don't know why every one rates him so bad he is not bad, maybe sometimes when explaining things, but if you read the chapter and then go to class you will do fine. *THE KEY HERE IS: to get all of the old chem exams and study from them, you will be guaranteed an A* He is actually very helpful and nice if you go to him during his office hours.
I don't know what this guy is talking about.....he's the worst professor EVER!!! Not everyone can accomplish the "KEY" to doing good by getting old tests. Don't take his class unless you want to teach yourself chemistry.
VERY UNCLEAR, DOES NOT WORK OUT ANY PROBLEMS DURING LECTURE AND IS NOT MUCH HELP IF ASK HIM ABOUT A PROBLEM
Really easy class if you study all of the old tests, the curves can be huge if the rest of the class does poorly and out of 25 questions you are only graded out of 20 so you can get 5 wrong and still have a 100% before the curve. But the tests are the only grades. He's a bad teacher, but you dont need him to get an easy B or even an A in the class.
This guy was of NO help to me during the class... He knows his chemistry very well but he is just bad at preparing you for exams....He does not prepare you for exams at all and just tries to teach you actual chemistry (I just want pass with basic knowledge).... Take Prof. Johnston if you can... I wouldnt take him again..
Keys to passing with Dr. Ming: Be self-taught, attend class (takes attendance), work with other students in class to review material, and review old tests on blackboard. Lots of questions are REUSED verbatim. Biggest advantage to Ming vs. Johnston: Ming isn't verbally abusive to his students. You'll see what I mean...
HE SUCKS!!! He is the worst Chem teacher ever, if you have a chance take Johnston. Ming failed over 40% of the class. He is extremely boring and he is not a teacher he is a researcher, so he doesnt care about his methods of teaching.
Shows up late to class every day and lectures til 5 min after about nothing that will be on the test. HW problems are not on the test either. Today he showed up 15 minutes late and gave us a test that was way too long and included material that was not covered. He offers no review and won't post updated grades. The worst professor I have ever had.
I'm saying goodbye to my 4.0 after taking a class with him. He does NOT TEACH!!! I think the material could be somewhat easy if it were explained and taught, but it is not! If you want to learn do not take a course with Dr. MIng
He is very intelligent and can't teach the material down to our level. However, if you talk to him during his office hours he is very helpful and friendly. He likes it when you visit him in his office, and not just to talk about the class. Grading is unclear, but if you ATTEND class and TALK TO HIM you can at least get a B and an A is fairly eas
Don't take him for no class only Chemistry for today, that's only if you have no choice available. He don't teach good and he boring. He go off on tangents alot. You going to always feel that you failing his class. Just try to figure out the Chemistry department curve and you will be o.k. But just try to avoid him while you are at USF.
He is the worst teacher I ever had. when you ask questions, he never gives a straight answer. He confuses you even more. His idea of help is rephrasing the question, rather than attempting to clarify what you don't understand. He cares nothing about his students or their success rate.
Really pushed me to earn my best!
very helpful!!!!!
Cannot understand a word he says...Is too stuck on grocery store analogies.
overly superflous in regards to everything not important to what will be tested on the exams
very knowledgeable!!
Be prepared to teach yourself chemistry. There is no doubt that he is intelligent, but he lacks the teaching skills to help us understand. Language is a major barrier - if he cannot find the words in English to express a concept, he says "nevermind" and moves on. He gets stuck on analogies and none of the stuff he talks about is on the test.
This is totally my dad XD
All you idiots out there who would rather talk trash about an EXCELLENT professor than learn the actual material, SHAME ON YOU! Dr. Ming didn't get his Ph.D. by being a trash-talking moron like a lot of you! Instead of criticizing his teaching, you morons should learn how to THINK for yourselves, and not expect everything to be spoon-fed to you.
This professor is absolutely the best chemistry professor I've ever taken. He is really helpful, if you don't understand and say back, he explains everything! We didn't even use the book, it was just his lecture notes. AMAZING!
Very boring lectures. His lectures are not on most of the things that are on the test because Johnston makes them. Take Johnston instead because when you are in Ming's class you are at an unfair disadvantage. CHM II is really easy grading wise. Also, Ming goes way over class time.
horrible teacher, doesn't care about the students, is there only for the research aspects....... DONT' take him
For the love of god, take Caswell, or Johnston. I did get an A+ in this class, but that was because I studied my butt off and went to Dr. casswell's lectures. Dr. Ming was by far the worst teacher i have ever had at USF. He does not prepare you for the exams and his lectures are incredibly boring. He was absolutly horrible. If you have him cry.
I suggest you find another professor. Dr. Ming does not teach the material, rather instead just reads the book to you and assumes that you understand. He uses clicker questions for quizzes in his lectures. His lectures have nothing to do with the tests. Basically this class teaches you to teach yourself. Loves to talk about outside knowledge.
He is an extremely nice and smart person, but is just bad at teaching. He forces you to learn out of the book on your own. Good luck if you take his course! He goes off subject often and he doesn't explain answers to questions.
Great professor, you learn a lot of information that will be useful if your looking for a future in chemistry. Not the easiest, but well worth it.
This teacher is absolutely HORRIBLE -avoid at all cost
People who don't do well in his class probably don't read the book. He's kinda slow going through the material, but he likes talking about practical uses of chemistry. His class is fun and enjoyable, but only if you keep up with the reading! Don't be lazy, or you're gonna be miserable.
Ming Chem class is not the easiest.I never went to class hence loosing some clicker points but still managed to get a B+ in the class. READ THE CHAPTERS AND THE POWERPOINTS, i cant stress that enough. Reading the book is what allowed me to get the grade a I did, but avoid Ming if possible.
Really nice guy, not so much as a teacher. Whenever I talked to him he took real interest, but most of what he presents in class is irrelevant. I didn't see it on the exam very often. I got a B relying heavily on the book, homework, and free library tutor.
powerpoints are useless, going to class is pointless since the lectures arent in english. tests werent bad since there was alot of extra credit. half the class wasnt sure if they would even pass the class.
He wastes the first 15 minutes discussing a magazine that is beyond the scope of the class. Lectures r useless because he goes off on irrelevant subject. He does not know how to teach. Be prepared to bury yourself in the book! You will need to read the chapters over and over! Has a thick accent also!If you have the option take K. Caswell instead!
Very knowledgable, not for the person who isn't willing to dig into what he is lecturing on. Does his best to stay relevant to modern chemistry which is entertaining.
This teacher is useless. He is very hard to understand and doesnt explain anything. I ended up attending another chem class (Caswell) to understand the material. Be prepared
The man is obviously brilliant, however he would serve us better by developing his teaching skills! He knows the material well but is unable to convey it clearly enough so the students understand. There's a clear language barrier. I scraped by with a C+ but failed every exam. Do the homework & quizes. If u dont't u'll wish u had!!!
I would not recommend this professor. He is a funny guy but when it comes to teaching, he basically does not teach. He does not bother explaining the basic main concepts of the chapter because he finds it all 'common sense.' People who don't have a strong background in chemistry would not understand what he is talking about.
Please save yourself! I am an A student, and because of his teaching skill now I am having a W on my transcript. He DOES NOT teach. Does not prepare you for the tests. You would never know what is going to be in the tests. No guid how or what to study.
Without a doubt THE worst professor I have ever had. He spends 30 min of a 50 min class setting up his notes and talking about an article that has nothing to due with what we need to be learning. The last 20 minutes are spent blazing through notes and then, eventually, you take an exam that no one is prepared for. He is not very respectful either.
Ming speaks broken english, so it's hard to understand/pay attention (especially if you're trying not to laugh). He does do clicker points. I never went to class after the first few weeks and got a C+ by teaching myself. I did better on the tests by studying alone than my friends did who went to class.
Horrible professor! I never used to go to class since I cound never understant him. Studied from the book and got an A. However, when I did go to class, I noticed he goes off topic a lot.. randomly starts talking about polar bears.. Do not take Ming!
This professor is by far the hardest professor since I started going to college. However, he is very nice if you talk to him outside of the classroom. For those who say you can't understand him because of his broken english are wrong. His english is understandable. What he doesn't know what to do is explain the material well. I got a B+ in his clas
I finished this class with an A, but I studied my... off. Stayed in lib. late with friends and ask everyone to help. He changes his style every semester. However for us, he picked up questions from the tests to find the right answers and then added the points to our test's grade. Final test was straight from the 4 exams with a little change.
Hard to understand and takes attendance randomly. Expect to teach yourself. Either way, gen chem 1 is not extremely hard in and of itself, plus you get a 'small session' once a week for relatively easy points. Moderate effort gets you a B, but an A is not so easy.
He is a horrible professor and half the time what he is saying isn't relevant to class. TA is rude and gives random quizzes on stuff Ming didn't even talk about. OWL HW assignments take hours and website is extremely slow. Only good thing is he lets you use notes on test and has an awesome grading scale.
AWFUL. He makes this intro class wayyyyy too hard! He expects students to know sooo much about chem prior to this class. You have to read all chapters prior to coming to class and if you have a question he makes you feel so stupid for asking. He is very rude to students as well if they show up late or if they are doing something he doesnt like.
Heres the breakdown: READ THE BOOK. he gives slides but u must read the book to understand them. tests are hard and theres a lot of questions in a lil amount of time. they are open notes though, which is good. ta is nice u can earn xtra points but if u dont have good study habits then dont take the class. hes more into real life applications.
Dr. Ming is a brillinat researcher. But that is the crux of the problem. He is a researcher, not a teacher. He is really very funny and helpful but his teaching skills are almost nonexistent. If you do not have at least a moderate background in chemistry, DO NOT TAKE HIM! Plus, The TA is condescending and snarky, and just as incoherent.
Very difficult material made nearly impossible to digest by a teacher with poor teaching skills. Doesn't take his job seriously either. He comes to class late, and at one point he and the TA simply never showed up to class without any email or announcement made beforehand. Avoid him if you can.
Terrible professor. Off topic a lot and you have to teach yourself the material. He's funny at times but its a waste of time to go to lecture.
Only randomly takes attendance, goes off topic for completely irrelevant reasons, and basically turns the lecture into a giant waste of time. Read the textbook and do the online homework if you want to learn anything.
Worst professor in my 4 years at USF. He is understandable, but is incapable of completing a single thought without wandering through whatever he feels like talking about that particular day. I have spent days looking up this material elsewhere to learn. Wish I had read some of these comments prior to taking this class. You have been warned
Dr. Ming is an extremely nice guy but he has no business lecturing a class of undergraduates. Dr. Ming simply can't convey the tough topics in Inorganic Chemistry. He tries to use simple analogies, but they end up making the material more difficult. He lectures on symmetry the entire semester. Save your time, frustration, and grade. Don't bother!!
Dr. Ming is an interesting character and funny guy but unfortunately he should not be teaching. His lectures are very hard to understand and follow and that it without the accent (which is not that bad). Unless it is a requirement for your major, DO NOT waste you're time, money, or gpa on this class (i say class not prof because he is the only one)
He is the worst professor I have ever taken. It is basically storytime in his class and he doesn't teach you anything that he tests you on. I had to watch videos to teach myself the material, and I still was not successful. He curves the class, but it honestly doesn't help very much because it is still difficult to pass. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Ming is a great person but SHOULD NOT be teaching this class. Inorganic Chemistry itself is an extremely challenging course and Dr. Ming only makes it worse. His lectures are like 85% off-topic rants and 15% inorganic chemistry. The questions on his tests come directly from that 15% of inorganic chemistry. There's a curve but it doesn't help..
By far the worst experience I've had at USF. Dr. Ming's lectures make absolutely no sense. He vaguely discusses the idea, but quickly gets off track. He may be on 1 slide for half the class and barely speak about the content of the slide. He tries to use his hands to help the students visualize what he's talking about, but that fails miserably.
Dr. Ming is by far the worst professor I have ever had. While he is extremely knowledgeable and a very nice guy, he is terrible at teaching. He will often get off track during lecture, only cover 1 slide, fidget with his hands to try to explain things, and repeat the same thing 15 different ways that do not make sense.
Dr. Ming is the worst professor in the USF chemistry department. He is a very nice guy and is aware of how extremely hard this class is, but when I met him in office hours he straight up told me he's not teaching for us to learn inorganic but to help us learn higher education practices. There are 3 exams, 60% of grade final 40% of the grade.
Dr. Ming is very nice, but not super great at communicating expectations. Most of your learning will be out of class. If you are not a particularly strong chemistry and physics student, I would advise staying away from this course. If this is required, then you should go to his office hours and develop a professional relationship with him for help.
Dr. Ming is a nice guy outside of class, but he's objectively not a good professor. He doesn't answer questions directly, he forces his TAs to do everything apart from lecturing, and getting any kind of grade takes weeks. If you ask for help, he'll just tell you to read the book. If you have a choice, don't take his classes.
Take Prof. Ma instead; even though he isn't a great professor either, he at least gives out fair/resonable-ish exams. Ming seems like a knowledgeable guy, but not great at teaching. Inorgo is already a difficult course, so when it's partnered with a prof. who can't teach, it's almost impossible. Grading scale is so forgiving, but even then RIP.
I'm not one to complain about professors but this guy really is HORRIBLE. He cannot teach. Grade is based on 3 exams & a final that's it. No HW/quizzes to practice material/get your grade up. I was a chem major & then switched to chem E; I've had many profs that people hated but none came close to Ming in terms of how bad my experience with him was
Dr. Ming is a smart man, no doubt about it. He is sweet and funny outside of class, however, this man should not be teaching. This class is extremely difficult. Lectures and test questions do not make sense. It feels very unorganized which makes it more stressful. He does offer "incentive" exams and a curved grading scale which is nice.
Took him for intermediate inorganic chemistry, first two weeks were spent going over a syllabus, had our first exam before an actual lecture was done. Extremely difficult exams, typos and absolutely no indication of what will be on the exam. Exams are online and class is curved so easy to pass, but overall difficult course.
His teachings sound like a schizophrenic person going off on ramblings. His exams have typos yet make up your entire grade. If you pass this class at all, it'll be by the skin of your teeth as you retake each and every exam.
take this class with this teacher if you hate yourself
Tenured professor that cares more about research than teaching. You won't learn from this class so be prepared to make a test bank, the final is composed of questions from exam 1-3. Gives exam the day before Thanksgiving and refuses to take responsibility for poor teaching.
He is severely unhelpful as an educator. He is unkind to his students, and genuinely doesn't seem to care about whether or not we pass. He seems unable to break down the information. When the average on an exam was almost 10 points below passing, we were scrutinized for not studying enough or told we were "not cut out for this".
Living proof of scientists who should stick to research and never teach. No wonder USF is not known for their chemistry. This guy makes me question why I ever came here in the first place. Only thing this guy taught me was to make sure you know how to teach before you actually do. No test review, practice problems, nothing. Take another professor.
Extremely unprofessional and not responsive to feedback. Incapable of conveying not only complex concepts to students, but also relatively simple ones. final is 40%, term exams are 20% for highest 2, 10% for lowest 1, 10% for a pre-exam. Questions are frequently recycled, so review old exams & self-teach. All exams were through canvas & remote.
Don't waste your time and money. This professor will only speak and not do any work problems. This professor will only read off a screen. They will not provide any sort of guidance until the day before an exam. Read the syllabus, its hilarious.
I would recommend to take a different Professor. Unfortunately there are no other professors. The only way to pass the class is with a question bank, as he does a very poor job of teaching. If you are not comfortable using a test bank, then change your major before taking this course.
This professor has somehow ruined chemistry for me. He is god awful at teaching and blames the students for failing the exams. If I knew I'd be suffering this much for a chemistry degree, I would've changed my career a long time ago.
This class was extremely hard and this professor never explained thing, he would just go on weird tangents about scenarios he made up in his head. I honestly think the structure and the book associated with this course is a joke and would not recommend this class if you haven't taken orgo 2.
Had to take this guy because he was the only one in the semester to teach the course. There's another professor who teaches this course and while they're not the best, they are LEAGUES better than Ming. We're all angry at his teaching because he simply can't teach well. Failure was a given if you did not cheat for none of us learned thru his lectu
This professor is horrid at lecturing and transferring his knowledge to the class. He frequently states random analogies that are useless and does not expand on anything that he directly stated from the PowerPoints he reads from. Avoid him at all costs.
This class was a nightmare. The professor barely explained concepts and just rambled about irrelevant scenarios. Thankfully, tools like unstuck ai helped me survive the exams, but I wouldn't recommend this course.
Dr. Ming structured this class in a way that feels unnecessary. He frequently goes on tangents that have little to do with the material we're supposed to learn. The entire grade is based on exams, with the final worth 40%. His teaching style rarely clarifies the subject and often makes the material more confusing.
well he was replaced right after mid-term grades and retired early. he did not teach us at all and went on tangents that were completely unrelated to inorganic chem. our second exam was 51 questions and 75 minutes, and expected that we would use AI to complete the exam. His notes were impossible to follow in class and he rarely posted lecture notes
