she is a very nice and warm teacher that has great enthusiasm for what she teaches/researches. her passion shows in her lectures. unfortunately the prof is good but the TA is a hard*** grader. i wouldn't take the class just cuz of the TA
Good scholar, so-so teacher. Young though, so is update to date on the material and fairly friendly.
She's a great professor, really nice and knowledgable. Class is not that hard. Mostly demand on readings and lecture notes. However, the TA's really hard grader, keep to see her in office hour is a good idea.
She's a really good prof. Makes me to be interested into the boring subject, and she's very knowledgeable. Plus, she's nice and willing to give all A's. So most people got A's and B's.
I loved this class! It was so interesting! But the readings were very dry and hard to read but I don't think most of the students read the readings. She gave nice summaries in class! Class is organized well, my notes were flawless! Makes studying for midterm and final a breeze!
Very Nice and very approchable, but her accent was hard for me to understand and i don't know if she had a full grasp of american culture. That's not her fault, but she just didn't have an american mind if that makes sense. The TA is hard grader (even says so) the whole experience was nuetral, not bad but certainly not good.
Pretty easy class if you put in some effort.
She is the best professor on campus! There is no need to do the readings since she goes over all the imp. topics in class. Also, she helps you engage in the material easily. She is very helpful and always willing to listen. As long as you go to class and take good notes, this class is a piece of cake!
The readings are interesting and Zhang covers important point in depth. The exams are very easy too if you fill out the discussion questions which are very similar to the exam. The TA only grades the final essay a little bit tougher, but she makes herself available for help and is very useful during her office hours.
Lectures are great, she uses PowerPoint and summarizes the readings for you. Readings are extremely dry. Videos are interesting to watch. If you pay attention in class and take good notes, you should do fine on the tests.
This class was great. Lectures are very clear and down-to-earth, well-organized, and not too fast. The movies are also interesting but sometimes are a bit too much info, and the reading is dry but you don't need to do it. Just take good notes in class, study them well for the exam, and write a good paper, and you'll get an A. Discussion helps too!
Her lectures are pretty good and go along with the readings quite well. She's really approachable and her TA's usually grade the midterms and paper pretty leniently.
Love this woman! Interesting class and a pretty diverse set of topics. She is easy to follow and posts power points. Must go to class to do well. Readings are dry but the TA grades leniently. Good class!
Interesting subject material, she answered questions very completely and clearly. The Powerpoints were not too helpful and she seemed to rely heavily on them to carry the class rather than her own speaking.
Professor Zhang is passionate about her work and it showed in lecture. Lectures were overall clear and the topics were interesting and thought provoking.
She was passionate, focused on interesting topics, and evoked discussion. Her accent was not a problem at all. The 6-8 page research paper was very challenging, but the midterm and final were completely based off of study guides. Work consisted of 2 papers, watching movies (in class), and reading articles. Easiness really depends on TA.
Terrible professor. Picked awful lecture topics, tried to have discussions in sci lec, didn't show up on days she used movies as lecture (roughly 1/3 of the classes) or for tests and showed no passion for making class accessible and interesting. assigned own book to avoid working on lesson plans for last two weeks of course. avoid like the plague
Did not seem to put effort into the class. Powerpoints were basic and lectures consisted of reading off them. Did not show up when not lecturing (film, exam) signaling her clear lack of interest. A large portion of class was spent on her book, which covers post socialist urban middle class China and is irrelevant for an intro antro class.
RIdiculously easy class. I got an A- by going to half of the lectures and not doing the readings. Granted, I had a really easy TA. Your grade lies immensely on the TA. I feel like I didn't learn that much from the class because there wasn't much content to begin with. Anyway, if you're looking for an easy A, look no further.
Professor Zhang Li rocks! Her lectures are interesting and accessible through smartsite. There's no boring, long textbooks, just two medium-small size books (very interesting) and her assigned online readings, articles, etc. are very interesting, intellectual and stimulating. I love her class and would recommend it highly!
I highly recommend! Her lectures are accesible through smartsite and her assigned readings, articles, etc were very interesting and stimulating. Loved the vids she picked and the books she picked for class! She's fun and passionate & is really there to help the student succeed-not "test" us & exhaust us, but to really just help us learn & succeed.
Easy A class. Questions on midterm and final are mostly from the readings and slides. Feel like I didn't learn anything new in the class, go over basic/ obvious concepts so was often bored during lecture. If you're looking for an easy class, go for it. For an intellectually stimulating class, look elsewhere.
Easy A, awesome class. You don't need to go to lecture, but my TA took attendance for discussion. Few papers and 2 non cumulative midterms (multiple choice and essay). Just read the powerpoints and google doc study guides and you'll do fine on the tests!
Class is overall pretty easy, but her lectures are boring.
Easy A in the class. Only one midterm which gets its information directly off her lecture slides. Two papers which are very subjective to TA's grading. Slighyly dry with lots of readings that are a bit unecessary but overall good class.
Professor Zhang is awesome! She's really funny and the lectures are super straight forward. She also posts the power points online. I learned a lot from her class and it made me interested in Chinese culture. There are 2 tests (2 essay questions each) and a 6 page paper. Show up and do well on these and you'll get an A!
I love Li Zhang!! Although a lot of people think her class is boring, I really loved it. She assigns a lot of reading, but she talks about them in class and goes really in depth with them, so don't be worried if you're behind on her readings. Overall, you can tell she really cares about her students and wants to know their opinions on topics.
her lectures are kind of boring. attendance isn't mandatory. only one midterm (10 mc and an easy essay) and one final. one three page response paper and an 8 page research paper (on anything) TA's are so easy, easy class. coronavirus led to the final being an online essay on one of the book. tbh i didnt read any articles but test still easy
Prof is caring and wants you to succeed. Lectures are boring and most of the information is common knowledge. Don't need to go to class or do readings because midterm and final are based only on the study guide. One short response paper, 6-8 page research paper (kinda challenging), 1 in class midterm, and in class final. Easy A but boring class.
My TA didn't put any of my grades in till the end, making this class stressful. Otherwise it's pretty easy. One paper worth 10% is 3 pages long (easy) and another paper is 6-8 pages long (difficult) worth 20%. Midterm and final worth 30% each and 10% for discussion participation. Not hard but extremely boring lectures.
Long research paper and assignments with essay responses. Easy weekly quizzes. Need to study specifics and reasons. No book. Tons of typing along with final essay.
Very easy class. I didn't learn a lot of new information. We learned a lot of concepts with Chinese and Hmong examples/perspective (based on her research and book we read) which was okay but I wish more perspectives were involved. Took her during beginning of COVID, and she took early action to move everything online. Interesting class overall.
Zhang cares about her students, but I found her lectures dry and repetitive. The readings are dense but you could conceivably skim them and still pass. Discussion is mandatory and the class is graded based off participation, two film response papers, a midterm, and a final. Overall it was an easy A but kind of annoying.
Dense readings and the professor is nice, but lectures are really dry. Two response papers and two exams, your fate (aka your grade) is basically in the hands of your TA; if you get a nice TA it'll be an easy A, but good luck if you get a tough grader. Lectures are recorded but discussions are not, participation is essential.
Zhang does a good job on covering a variety of topics in anthropology. Lectures can be a little dry especially if you are not interested in what the focus is for that week. Grade is based on a midterm, 2 papers, and a final. Both the exams basically ask questions about the readings and lectures. The papers are based off of films assigned to watched
Nice teacher, tries to be very understanding. Goes over all the information. Lectures can be extremely boring. I fell asleep during 5 lectures and I am the type of person who does not fall asleep that easily. Her accent is also kinda difficult to understand at first and can be annoying at times when she talks fast.
She cares for her students and its evident because she gives mental health checks and always offers more help if needed. Her lectures are super interactive and interesting. Her midterms are super easy if you pay attention in class because she gives a study guide beforehand.
Prof Zhang is a very caring teacher. Even if her lectures may be dry, they are important as she basically outlines what you need to know for the midterm and final exam. Discussion sections are mandatory. We learned about mental health, globalization, culture. 2 books required for class. Rest are articles.
Your grade completely depends on your TA, so it can be very hit or miss sometimes. There is SOOO much reading for this course and the articles/PDFs provided are of poor visual quality and really dense so they're very difficult to read sometimes. There are 2 books you need to read but I didn't and I was fine. Overall it's interesting material.
Interesting topics and Professor Zhang is very knowledgeable, but sometimes the lectures could be a bit boring. Only graded on participation in section and four papers (two being exams). There is also a lot of articles to be read throughout the class and two books that you must read parts from in order to do well in the class. Overall, good class!
She was knowledgable, but the class is not formatted well for notetaking. This course had a lot of discussions. Participation matters if you want a A. We also were only graded on participation as well as 4 two page papers, so everything depending on TA's grading. For exams, a list prompts are provided and are practically the same on midterm/final.
Grade is based off of 2 Film Review Papers, 2 Exams (Midterm, Final) that are in essay form, and Participation. 2 books, many films/articles My TA probably based essay grading off of participation, so turning your camera on/participating in discussion was pretty important. The class overall was pretty easy but there are easier ANT2 professors.
Professor Zhang is a good lecture but she mainly just talks and there's not much to note. Her midterms are a bit predictable in what questions she'll pick to answer. As long as you read and highlight a few things, you'll be fine for the midterm and final. If you listen during your discussion section you should also be pretty okay
I really enjoyed this course, it was very insightful and eye-opening. Professor Zhang is really kind and supportive. Grading was based on two film response papers, midterm paper, and final paper. Attendance and participation is necessary but I think you really gain a lot from discussions and actively listening.
Professor Zhang is such a knowledgable and caring professor who articulates concepts well and is very down to earth with her approach to teaching. Lectures were long and sometimes a little boring, but she was so sweet, and TA Soha was amazing. Lenient grading, didn't do much paying attention in this class and got my first A+ in college. Great films
Graded on two film response papers, midterm paper, and final paper. Felt impossible to complete the number of readings assigned, but lectures summarized them. Attendance during discussion & participation mandatory for grade. Very articulate, emphasizes main ideas in lectures (pay attention to those and you'll be fine for exams).Grade depends on TA.
i liked dr zhang but ant2 was boring for me. ur grade depends on the TA and i had a terrible one.the readings and books were painful and i only did like 3 of them. zhang goes over the readings in class which helped a lot. we didn't have lectures sometimes and just had to watch films. graded on 2 exams (800wrd essays) and one long 7-8 pg paper.
There were multiple weekly readings, they're long and dense (im pretty sure many students didn't even read all the reading). The TA grades your 2 midterm (700-800 words), a 6-7 research paper and a response paper based on the films. Midterms is fairly easy it, the harder part is the research paper. Grade will be based on TA gradings.
Professor creates a safe space for conversation and loves getting students' opinions on topics during lectures. TA's are very helpful and always answer your questions or get back to you with a proper answer. Make sure to take notes. Grades are based on a midterm exam, a research paper, and a final exam. Exams are in essay format.
I honestly found this class a little boring, I think it's just because I don't like history type classes. There's also a lot of readings needed for discussion, but you can get by with skimming. 2 papers, a MT and final. MT was fair, but mildly difficult if you don't put much effort into this class, like me. 1 short paper & 1 longer research paper.
my queen. her lectures are very interesting. she posts slides but you really have to be in lecture to understand what's going on. you do have to read a lot but if you just do the work the class is super easy. there were 2 papers a midterm and the final so not a lot to be graded on but hopefully ur ta is chill. def take it.
Dr. Zhang is great! Her lectures are engaging and interesting and she is a very kind professor. Discussion attendance is mandatory and there are lots of readings but you can get by with skimming. Overall loved the class and Dr. Zhang.
This professor has really organized lectures and they're easy to follow and understand.
Really nice course and prof. She covered lots of meaningful and inspiring topics about ANT. Grades mainly depend on 1 short essay, 1 research essay, discussion participation, midterm, and final in-class essay. Mainly writing work. But if you put enough effort into them, you will get good grades.
TA determines your grades. Mine was great. The lectures were mostly good. Not too bad but there are easier ANT 002 professors.
The class was on the easier end. The lectures weren't really important to go to. There is a lot of reading but isn't necessary to do ALL of them. Just make sure you read and understand all the major documents/books/stories before midterms/finals so that you can answer the essay prompts.
This is an incredible course. I had Professor Zhang last Spring Quarter. Her lectures are engaging. There's also a lot of writing in this class. I would NOT recommend skipping readings, especially the two (amazing) books covered; the class operates around them. Make sure to at least get a general understanding of the material and apply yourself.
Best Anth/Sociology professor in Davis. She make the hard and messy knowledge become understandable. Her book Anxious China may a little bit hard to understand for students without East Asian background but she will talk about it in detailed way so you can catch it up. If you want to know about Anth and East Asia(in objective way), take this class!
I found this class super interesting. The lectures are not mandatory and I did get bored at some points but the professor encourages discussion and participation so it's nice to hear what input peers have. The reading comes back in midterms so be sure to do those.
She's extremely sweet and loves the subject. The course opened my eyes to many problems facing the world. Highly recommend!
Taught a great survey course; well-paced lectures, broad overview of anthropology, and decently chosen readings for the course. You will feel the full 5 units of writing experience; one short (~2 pg) and one long (~7 pg) paper, in addition two in-class essays (~1200 words) for midterm and final. Mileage (and grading) will vary based on TA.
By far the best class I'm taking this quarter. Her lectures are very engaging and flow nicely. She is very educated on the topic she teaches. I learned many interesting things about society I was unaware of. Readings may feel like a lot, but can get past it by skimming them.
She is great! The final paper is due close to the final so beware. Overall she is amazing.
She goes off on a tangent mid-lecture sometimes but its generally interesting. Couple of readings a week that can be pretty heavy at times. Only assignments are : one 2 page and one 7 page paper + midterm & final (which are like 2 paragraph written tests). Overall pretty easy and solid GE.
Really engaging lectures that made me enjoy the class. I also had a great TA that made discussions engaging! This class made me enjoy writing, although there were lots of readings. Overall recommended.
The lectures were very interesting and I'd consider the class easy for 5 units. It's very lecture and reading-heavy so try not to fall behind on the readings and notes. You're graded on only discussion participation, the midterm, final, a short essay and long essay, so make sure to do well on those! (I managed an A+ but skipped half the lectures)
Great professor, very knowledgeable and engaging. No homework for the class, just lots of reading but if you go to lectures all information from readings you need to know for tests will be covered. Take notes during lectures and do the study guides, test questions are taken straight from them. Grading depends on TA. Two research papers, very easy.
Honestly, this class was a bit boring to me, but I still learned a lot! Very straightforward and the lectures were organized. But overall not a difficult class, the only hard assignment is probably the 7-8 page research paper. Pretty easy overall for a 5-unit GE. Professor Zhang was great but I didn't like my TA that much.
Professor Zhang discussed many interesting topics, and I loved the class! She cares a lot about the students and involves them in discussions as well. There are readings but you can get away with only reading summaries. Two papers were assigned as homework, and mine were graded lightly. The midterm and final were very easy.
prof zhang was really nice but her lectures were so boring. this class was very easy to slack in because of the amount of readings we had. the grade book only consisted of two papers -- one short response paper and one research paper -- and two in-class exams -- midterm and final. the worst thing about this course was that the tas grade everything.
Named drop her book and made us watch films in class. Not a lot of actual cultural anthropological info either, mainly historical racism (which is fine, but not by itself in a class that isn't dedicated to it). Would focus a lot on China, which was out of place for this class. I wanted a class for culture as a whole, she did not deliver at all.
good lecture, hard midterm and final
Very nice lady, amazing course for 5 units, take her class! Grading will depend on your TA, but the course itself is very interesting and a fairly low-intensity GE for the units it costs. Introduces you to some really cool short stories and films.
Very very bad professor!!!! Don't choose her class. It is hardly midterm and final. The class material is boring. It requires you to look at a lot of material and articles. Do not have any curve. I don't know why she got 5.0/5.0 when I took this class. The rate is incompleted.
Professor Zhang is kind and delivers engaging lectures, encouraging student participation, which makes the class more enjoyable. Your grade depends on the TA you have. I had a stricter TA, which made things tougher, but my friends with more lenient TAs had easier grading and assignments. Overall, a 5 unit great class!
Professor Zhang was a really nice professor who cared about hearing from students. However, there's a lot of reading required for this class, and it's hard to get by without doing them. Lectures could be more interesting, but you can get by without paying too much attention to them. Exams are relatively easy as long as you read/watch the material.
Good lecturer and encourages participation. I found them boring, but I don't find anthro that interesting. Do the readings, even though there is a lot, it'll make your life easier for the two papers (one short, one research paper) and two tests (essay response, but if you do study guides you'll be fine).
Very sweet prof! Class has readings, midterm, final and two papers one of which requires two interviews. Grading depends on TA. As long as you pay attention and do all readings, easy to get an A. I personally dont like ant but found this class interesting. Appreciated how she moved class to zoom in light of election and posted lecture slides too.
She was a good professor but would often go on a tangent that wasnt related to the subject, my TA was really good tho, during discussions we would get more of an in depth perspective on the lectures and readings done in the past week. Make sure to read the readings before the next lecture since she bases the lectures on that
Her lectures themselves were okay, kinda hard to follow especially late in the quarter but overall she gets her point across. as the readings go you can get away with reading up to the midterm tbh on you will be good if you just try. She gives almost exact copies for mditerms and finals and if you get a good TA you will be fine
This class was doable for a 5 unit course but it was boring at times. There are documentary days so those are chill. Grading had a couple things; two papers, a midterm, a final, and participation. Your grade low key depends on your TA because the class is massive in scale. There will be discussion sessions and my TA took attendance.
Really sweet professor! Knowledgeable on the material and approachable. Some outside reading, but for a 5 credit class pretty worth it.
Was extremely in depth about her knowledge about China. Fair grading by TA. Attendance Mandatory. 1 midterm 1 final. Final is not culmulative. Readings required 2x per week
Prof Zhang is amazing. She draws a lot on her own experiences in lecture and makes an effort to make the class interesting. There are a lot of readings, but as a non-major who ended up reading all of them, I'd say it was worth it. About a third of the readings are anthropologic blubber and jargon, but the rest is super interesting. And there's E.C.
Watched a movie every week. Midterm and final questions were taken word for word from the study guide. 700 and 2000 word papers. Graded super easy (depending on ta). I stopped doing the readings halfway through the quarter and I was completely fine. This class is VERY easy. Professor isn't the most amazing lecturer, but she's pretty good.
Super easy GE class! Grade is only based on short response paper, final paper, midterm and final, so it seems a little daunting but grading is very chill (depends on TA though). Very interesting and relevant material to the world today and super nice person overall! Would defff recommend
