either math 160 or 165. Very nice lady- got an A
Great instructor, she explains the homework and reviews material before the exams.
She is quite excellent covering the subject. Prof Liu also answers evry question clearly even if the question is really stupid. Her exams are easy if you bother doing the assigned work. If Math 165 has to be taken, take Prof Liu's class.
Prof. Liu is a nice well organized person. funny at times and is helpfull with any question you have.
Not the easiest class, but not the worst one either. Seems to be a good person
Good teacher that doesn't try to trick the students on tests. The only problem with her is that the final was 10 times harder than the exams.
Overall, she is a good teacher. The problem is that sometimes she can get boring and confusing. Her tests are okay, final was easy. The problem also is the students. She has no control over them. They yak it up during class and they cheat.
Nice, organize, very clear in explaining and showin. You just have to bear with accent. Its not that bad. Do the assigned homework and ur gaurantee to pass the exam.
Her class should be easy if you do the homework (and have natural math inclination). I have some complaints about her TA BiFeng Ding, though. Altough she is nice, her quizzes were poorly written and it is very easy to lose points on them. But Liu is good-used - used to teach at Wharton.
Rather easy. Just show up before SA's are due and listen to the solutions. they'll resemble the test.
She's a good professor. She's also really nice and really understanding. My friend even missed her midterm, but she let her take it with a later class. She gives bonus points for attendance. Attending lecture and discussion before SAs recommended.
An excellent professor. If you do the hw, her tests will be very easy. Her tests are actually similar to the sample test she goes over in class. She is helpful enough to elaborate on topics that some don’t understand. I got an A, and I’m horrible at math!
Excellent professor. Exams were not bad. They were similar to assignments given in class. Do the homework and you will be fine. Easy to get an A in these classes.
easiest class, great teacher. She is Chinese but she speaks english very well, clear voice. no problem! Feel free to ask questions anytime. This is easiest class ever
Little difficult for me to understand, she has an accent, but thankfully not a deep one, she speaks very good english. She's very hepful and willing to answer all questions, she does countless examples of everything taught and so there should be no reason not to understand how problems are solved in the different chapters that you will learn. All in all a good teacher.
The woman can't control her classroom. She should teach high school.
She doesn't really go into much detail in class on how to do your homeowrk so that part is up to you. Once you understand the homeowrk though, the rest will actually be very simple.
Very dry teaching, no real life applications here. Okay at teaching, bad at answering questions. Her & her 4 TA'a all have English as a second language so it's hard to find help that you can understand. I'd like to ask her what is the probability that out of all the possible TA's, she "somehow" ended up with 4 that are the same nationality as her.
She was a really nice teacher willing to help you if you ever had a question. There was usually a curve on the exams so that helped out a lot.
her tests and quizzes were reasonable. i might even say easy. as predictable a math class as they come.
Great class, I had thought class would be hard b/c I have math but the teacher and the ta Chan made it fun, I had a great time, wish all math classes could be this easy! Recommended!
Liu keeps her special assignments, quizzes, and exams simple. If you attend lecture and do the homework, there's no way you won't pass the class with flying colors. She is practical in her teachings and won't put anything on a test that she or any of her TAs had not gone over in class.
Best math class I haven taken in any college in the city. She's clear, and will never test you on stuff she doesn't cover. Test aren't complicated, and gives you every chance to prepare including 2 Study sessions before, Aside from Lecture time. I wish i was taking her for 165!!
Despite the fact that the tests are really really easy and are based entirely on the study-guides she hands out, I would not recommend her class if you want to actually understand the stuff. At times, she was clueless about the stuff she was teaching and seemed to be copying stuff straight out of the textbook.
Pretty easy class, you have homework every week, but the hwk reflects the quizzes/exams. She is very nice and pretty good at explaining material. I am not very good at math and this class was pretty easy for me. She allows graphing calculators on exams and everything else is online.
Simple topic but you should go to class if you hope to get at least a B. 80% of grade is tests so get as many points as you possibly can. I did not go to lecture or discussion much so I had tremendous trouble with the concepts around final time. TA Kursell was not helpful at all, very rude. Not much of a curve.
Homework and quizzes done on MathXL/Course Compass. Lecture attendance not required but helpful. Professor gives good outline of what to expect on exams. Good review sessions. Overall pretty good and straightforward.
The class itself is really boring and if you've taken stats in high school, you will be really bored. A lot of the topics are also ones from high school. Otherwise, Prof. Liu is really helpful during office hours and wants you to succeed. TA Kursell, like someone else said, was really rude and doesn't know how to do math.
She is incredibly nice, I did really bad on the exams(mid 40s), however she noticed that I was struggling and worked with me. I should have gotten a D or F instead I received a C. Her lectures can get confusing though if you don't have a graphing calculator.
The textbook used in this class is quite unfathomable unless if you're math-savvy. Despite attending her lectures, I still have trouble understanding majority of concepts presented in the class. In other words, avoid this class at all cost if you aren't a stat major.
Really nice, helpful, and shows examples if you ask. Her accent makes it a bit difficult to understand, but its not bad. Willing to help as long as you try. The TA, Stephen London was kinda mean, boring, grades strictly at times. Just be sure to do the hw, study for quizzes and tests and you should be fine.
Best teacher I took this symester. With the lack of good teaching at UIC TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! she takes an invested intrest when lecture runs low to make sure people get what she is talking about. It's hard to understand her the first few weeks but after that she is very helpful. Also her TA Mckormick is not useless like I have found many TAs to be
Biostatistics I: Dr. Li Liu is a very good instructor. Her lectures are clear, and she is very responsive to questions via email. This class is not difficult provided you stay ahead in the reading and homework. Study her printed notes for each chapter--they cut through the textbook's unnecessary detail and are the basis for the three exams.
Going to class isn't mandatory but if you go, you will get an A and if you don't, you will get a F. I guarantee you that much for this course. The textbook isn't helpful at all but her notes are the bomb. They'll lay out everything out in the open for you. Thank you Mrs. Liou, Best PROFESSOR ever!
You can teach yourself with my math lab, you don't have to show up to lecture at all. I never went to lecture, only discussions and I got an A. She is a decent teacher besides her slight accent, you can still understand her. Drops 3 lowest quiz grades and lowest exam.
I wouldn't recommend taking up 381&401. What you need 1st week in 401 is what you learn 5th week in 381. Dr Liu is a good teacher however I didn't like the way the class is structured at all. Quizes/tests are OK. The book sucks!Examples suck, I wish we spent more time on examples for underlying concepts to be used in real world. I'm Disapointed
Really good professor and really clear about concepts. I never took a stats class before this and wasn't sure what to expect. But, she goes over all the HW problems and reviews A LOT, so even the toughest concepts were ok. Take it with her!!!
She is so nice, and really wants her students to do well. She only takes the top five quizzes and drops the 3 lowest hmwk grades. Calc was confusing but she really was good at trying to help.
She's not very clear, I had a hard time understanding her. Just go to SEO or even ask your TA for help. In Math 165 your TA will be the only one that can help you.
This professor is amazing. I had her for both stats101 and calculus II and she made me feel welcomed in both classes. Going to her for help was fun and encouraging because she's always smiling and willing to help you. She is a great teacher also. She made me love math. Getting in A in calculusII was not easy.
The course was easier than I thought. She was really helpful and I'll definitely take any of her math and stat classes if available. Her midterms are not hard, but not very easy either. You have to study well. We had quizzes and homework every week and 2 midterms and a final. We also had a project that removes the lowest midterm if u want!
Nice lady, never went to her for help, but in class she wasn't super clear. I stopped taking notes after a while because she just became really hard to follow. Wants her students to do well, willing to discuss grades at the end of the semester.
She's really nice and good at explaining. Highly recommended!
Focus on the final it is worth 40% of your grade from what I remember. She curved the final because no one ever went to lecture so never learned anything I got a high D on the final but with the curve it changed to a B.
I had a difficult time following her. Her notes were often all over the place and she did a lot of talking about how to solve problems, rather than writing them out. Wouldn't want to have her again, but she is nice and helpful.
She is really nice, lecture sessions are kinda boring but helpful in homework, quizzes, and exams. Homework problems from the book were extremely hard, but quizzes were easy, exams were okay. Maybe a little harsh grader.
Really good prof. Does alot of ex prblms nd will do hw prob if you ask even on the day its due. Study guides are directly related to tests. One question was even on the test itself. Allows one sheet of notes for second test and 2shts 4 final. I had a high C 1wk b4 final but I got a 100% on the final and ended up with an A. keep up w/ hw&quizzes
Teaches at an High School level. Absolutely terrible. Teaching style is garbage. Can not understand 20% of things she says because her accent is too thick. Do not take a class under her teaching under any circumstances.
Although, Lia Liu is always able to help. Her examples in lecture are confusing and all over the place. calculus is tough itself, you have to work for an A. My TA sucked. So in conclusion, I taught myself the class not having any prior experience with calculus. Lia Liu was just seen as a professor who had to attend lectures to me.
It was a great class, but I officially hate math now. She helps you as much as she can.
The homework and quizzes are actually REALLY helpful. If you always go to class, do the work, & study a bit, you should get an A. She always gives great feedback after hw & quizzes so you won't make the same mistakes again on the exam. I have no idea how you could fail this class. I took it with 401 and got an A in both. Would definitely recommend!
This was probably the easiest class I've taken at UIC. Professor Liu makes this class incredibly easy.
It is difficult to understand the professor because the volume of her voice is low (even though she has a mic) & she has an accent. She does work problems on her paper & displays it on the projector. However, she proceeds very quickly without making sure if the students wrote all the stuffs down. Take this class with another professor if possible.
The class itself is no fun at all but Professor Liu is a pretty good teacher. Sometimes her lectures can be a little confusing but she clarifies really well if you ask. However, your TA will make or break this class for you. I think if I had a better TA, I would probably be doing better in the class. Prof Liu is super sweet though!
Professor Liu is a good professor. For those of you have a very hard time understanding accents, I wouldn't recommend her. She has a slight accent. She works hard to help you understand the material if you are confused or have questions. Sometimes takes attendance. Homework is online. Believe there were 3 exams and a final.
Professor Liu puts together very organized lectures, and really cares about her students' success. She goes through many examples as well as theory, and makes sure you understand all of it. I recommend her for any stats class you plan on taking.
She's the best at what she does and made math clear for a non-math person. Accent was thick but not confusing.
80% of overall grade is based on tough tests.
Prof Liu does not do a good job of teaching the material & her tests are difficult.
Overall the class was difficult. Prof Liu does a good job at explaining the material and is always there too help. Going to lecture is a MUST if you want to get a good grade in the course.
I had a real hard time with this class. Professor Liu really helped me, and I don't think I would have passed if I didn't have her. I put a lot of time in going to her office hours, and she gives such a good perspective of learning the material. I wish she taught Stat 411 too.
Professor Liu is one of the best professor at UIC! She really cares about students. Homework and quizzes help me a lot!
The class overall was a big mess, her method of teaching is awful. Her notes seem to be all over the place and the material is just thrown at you constantly. Very awful exams and the TA is just as bad. She makes a 100 level class seem as if it is a 400 level class. Avoid at all costs, just terrible.
I could not understand what she was saying and her teaching was pretty much useless to me. TA was even more clueless than the professor. 11/10 would not recommend.
It was a struggle but she did give a nice curve in the end with grades. Mostly based on tests and it helps to actually do the homework and try and work with it. Don't skip lectures and review on your own a lot but she is nice just not that great of a teacher, but it isnt hard to at least get a B
She is a good teacher, and very caring. Her lectures are very clear. She gives bonus points for attendance. Make sure to attend her class and do the homework. If you do these, your A is guaranteed.
Professor Liu does not explain some things very well, and her lectures can feel muddled. However, the class is fairly easy. If you understand the concepts, getting As on the tests shouldn't be hard at all. Also, pay attention to the TA during discussion; he goes through problems just like the ones on the quiz before he gives it to you.
The concepts of the class isn't hard, but the way Prof. Liu explains things are sometimes confusing. She has an accent and decides to handwrite most of her lecture notes (which can be messy). As far as grades go, she dropped the lowest 3 quiz and 3 homework grades, and the 2 exams (and final) are curved heavily. Homework and quizzes once a week.
Overall, she's a nice professor, but the class was very difficult to me. It required a lot of work/paying attention because her lectures were hard to understand (thick accent, doesn't explain thoroughly) and we had a quiz every week in discussion. I basically taught myself through the textbook and homework. Her exams are hard, she curves heavily.
She is a very nice lady. She hates when people leave in the middle of class. Since she doesn't take attendance she always says if you don't want to come then don't. Her handwriting is not the best and neither of the TA's were much help. Tests are half multiple choice which screwed me up personally, but there was a curve.
Worst professor I have ever taken. Her teaching methods are ancient, she uses scrap pieces of paper to exemplify problems and is disorganized at that. At times she would verbally describe problems. Exams are nothing like quizzes or homework. She curves all her exams through this complicated reasoning, but if she didn't everyone would fail.
Her teaching methods are horrible, she used paper and marker. On top of that, her accent and handwriting were indecipherable. Class average was very low after each exam so she curved the grades- otherwise everyone would fail. Tests were unnecessarily difficult and she doesn't prepare you for them. Horrible, do not take her.
Her lectures are easy to understand (for the subject) and her tests aren't super difficult if you can do the homework. She also gives a lot of Extra Credit as you can miss like half the quizzes and HW's and still get full points. Would recommend.
The weekly quiz topics have nothing to do with prior lectures so be prepared to at least 3 to 4 sections ahead. There is no partial credit for quizzes/exams. The curve fluctuates significantly throughout the semester (70-74 is a D apparently). She doesn't show examples and just reads from her printed notes.
She is very unclear when explaining concepts and doesn't give examples in class. She gives a lot of homework and most of the homework problems is material that she hasn't covered. When we ask questions, she makes us feel stupid by saying things like we should've learned this in Calculus or Linear Algebra and moves on.
Good teacher. initially got a d on first midterm, started going to office hours and got an A on the second midterm and a 100 on final. If you study the review you should get a good grade. The midterms and final are very similar. do all the homework, and ask questions. The curve is huge too. every exam has a curve. idk how you fail this class..
Notes were posted in the beginning. She gave reviews on previous materials in every lecture. After she explained new concepts, many example practices were covered in class. The materials are related to Calculus, which is a perquisite for this class. Quizzes were from lecture materials. Partial credits are available but not in bonus questions.
A bit of a pedant. Just when things get significantly more difficult for the second midterm, she stopped covering material at a good rate. What I mean is, she starts talking a lot and leaves you thinking about how much tuition you've wasted when all she had to do was show you how to do some math problems. Waste of tuition.
She is very reasonable and nice. I wouldn't recommend if this is your first time taking stats because she moves through material very quickly and is hard to understand at times
I was nervous to take this class because I hadn't taken a math course in a few years but Liu explained things very well. If you pay attention to lectures, take good notes and review study guides before exams it shouldn't be too hard. Weekly quizzes in lab and attendance is taken for points, but overall great class for someone who doesn't like math.
I took 401 and 381 together, do that if u can. She is really nice but wont give u partial credit if u have the wrong concept, but she goes over concepts allll the time. Very helpful in her office hours, and is good at explaining. 401 theres a weekly quiz, 381 theres an attendance sign in online. u dont need the book for 381.
