This class is hard, exams are long. Very interesting though, the teacher knows his stuff! Has had many experiences in the phys.anth field.
meh. pretty boring class. prof needs to stop sounding like he's reading out of a book all the time.
He knows his****, is funny and quite sexy for an old dude. His lectures are a grind, a total info dump, but the content is interesting. and he is really helpful if u need extra help or guidance on essays.
Very interesting. He knows his stuff. He is not returning to this school however.
There's a lot of information, but it's interesting. He's hot too and definitely knows his stuff.
I love him! how could you not?
He's an AMAZING prof! He's not boring, but gets right to the point of what he's teaching. Very very good. And he's got a hot irish accent, what more can you want?
Awesome prof, if you go to lectures youll do well. also has hot irish accent and good jokes. is teaching race and ethnicity (anth 2020) this year.
Good Prof, knows his material, fun essay topic, really easy final, his midterm though was very tricky and difficult, you really have to study for that, he seems like a really good guy
He taught Marx and Marxist Analysis at the University of Ottawa and it was great. He was by far my favorite prof with a great attitude, style and sexy punk Irish ass.
This class is so boring I could fall into a coma. The material could be interesting but for some reason its just such a dull long lecture every time. He's a smart guy, knows his stuff, but really is ALL over the MAP with his info which makes it hard to follow.
I thought this class was interesting. He is a great prof, he is very informative and knows what he's talking about. I didn't think this course was boring at all. I guess I can see why some people would find the material boring though.
I took Anth 1001-1002. Get a seat close to the front becuase he has a quiet voice, even though there is a mic in the class , it does nothing. Over all great teacher, knows his stuff and is always open to debate. Going to classes pays off. All teach notes are posted on the net after class.
Fun class even w/o an anthropology background. Prof. knows his stuff and has a great sense of humor (made all the more endearing by the fact that his timing is always a little off). Sexy in an unselfconscious, tucked-in-t-shirt sort of way.
knows what he's talking about, makes good jokes, and pretty much just makes class fun. His tests are pretty easy, but he throws in some random specific questions to mess with you
Overall decent prof. Needs to work out his material. Text and slides dont match, makes you feel like there's no direction to the class. Bad thing for a first year course. Poor tests; anth is broad topic but chooses to focus on miniscule details...blah. Quick to return midterms. Very interesting but needs to consolidate give confidence to students.
I wouldnt suggest takin his summer course. He is too busy to give appropriate time to students yet his expectations are high. He does not say what he is looking 4 in essays yet his grading is pretty tough. Maybe it would be best to take him during regular school semester where 4 mths will b ample time to understand his pedagogy.Whata waste of time!
Don't recommend, too cavalier re. students. Contacted him before course to get a jump on reading text. He told me the wrong one. Midterm was graded wrong. I asked for the class average-was told he was"simply too busy". Essays marked very hard despite being a 1st year course. I'm third year with an A average, and this was my worst ever essay mark.
He is so disorganized and is not a good prof. I found him to be barely audible in the lecture hall, even sitting close and very unclear with his expectations for students work. The mid-term and exam I believe were quite unfair as there were many miniscule details that he wanted us to remember.
Just dumps info on students, no clear emphasis. 4th year student and havent seen this much info in any one course, useless. tests roughly 30 ?'s, touches upon 5-10% of material, asks very obscure ?'s. in class material nearly always different than text. always seems as if has more important stuff to do. really crappy prof for teaching, no good.
Extremely helpful and understanding, especially considering his class has roughly 500 students.
Terrible proff. Just throws info out and expects way to much for a first year class, STAY CLEAR
Absolutely the most arrogant prof I've ever encountered over the course of 4 degrees. His lectures are totally random. Think Trivial pursuit for marks. He clearly has no interest in teaching and when asked for help infers that you are stupid (I have a MA and this is a 1st year course and I am a A+ student). Has received many complaints. Avoid!!!
He is a professional in his field, but he can't teach at all. Class completely unorganised, lecture was completely different from textbook chapters he assigned. Stay away from his class.
Again very arrogant, totally unpredictable tests, no flow to lectures, slides and what he is teaching often unrelated. Any criticism and he flys off the handle. Stay away.
Terrible prof. He really screwed up the syllabus, tests were comprised of the most random and useless questions. Lectures were hard to follow. AVOID. I hope he sees this comment.
Definitely knows what he is talking about, but clearly has no interest in teaching. I found the only reason I went to class was because I find the material interesting. Sometimes he was funny and engaging, but for the most part you could tell he thought he had better things to do. Essay was marked pretty harshly for a first year class.
Terrible prof I've ever had, AVOID.He has no interest in teaching at all, just through info, hardly follow his lecture, which is unrelated to slides.Very arrogant, rude, and tough, not helpful at all. Class completely unorganized, tests unpredictable, midterm graded wrong, essay marked absolutely unfair and poor.STAY AWAY. Only interest was materials.
Not there for his students, would never recommend anyone ever take his class. terrible marker, expects way to much from his students, with unclear expectations for his students. Exam will have a question nothing to do with anything you spent a majority of time learning. If you have him good luck, and make sure you don't get behind on your readings.
Loved this class- real gem!
His lectures were really great, but you need to go to class because he does not post the slides. The midterm was mostly stuff from class and if he told us to read something specific from the textbook. We had a take-home exam which was 2 essay questions and pretty easy. The lectures were dry sometimes but he always ended class early.
Submitted doctors note and he asked me what class its for...????? Also he is rude through emails and barely student friendly
very hard to understand him talking and he powers through his slides incredibly fast rude in emails doesn't stop for questions talks for long periods of time about things he says won't be on the exam
He's a good prof, but he goes way to fast during lectures. He skips through his slides and does not even give you the chance to copy down all the notes. He also does not post all the lecture slides, so it is important to go to lecture to get all the notes.
he sucks.
This course is a terribly outdated version of anthropology, paired with a textbook full of poorly pieced together, mostly irrelevant texts. The professor is a good lecturer and a kind person but the content was not at all a good representation of the field of anthropology. I recommend to update the content to reflect current trends in the field.
Only textbook is the one written by him. Don't skip class unless you have a way to get notes, the powerpoints posted are a blimp in what was actually talked about. All-in-all an enjoyable, intelligent professor. He may seem old school in social examples used in class, but he is open minded and fair.
I fairly enjoyed his lectures and found that it was critical to go to the lectures. However prof was quite blunt and a bit intimidating when describing how to write the research paper. All in all, lectures aren't that bad once you get there.
Don't bother emailing him with questions. He will be rude and won't give you an answer.
I tried to ask question and go to office hours but he was nothing but condescending and disrespect. He was rude, the actual lectures not too bad but terrible if you need some more help understanding certain things
I have been in university for 4 years and he is, without a doubt, the worst prof I have ever had. He invited his own citation style, but tells the class it's APA (which obviously led to a lot of confusion in the TA groups). He only posts some of his slides (he deletes randoms slides after class before posting to CULearn). He's also very rude.
As a prof, his lectures were boring and hard to follow, the midterm was very specific for an introductory course and the assignment expectations were never clear. Beyond that, he is a disrespectful person. Very rude on emails, never available for clarification and does not take blame for his mistakes. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
This was a very interesting course (I usually skip out on lectures) but I went to every single one. Professor Kilmurray is engaging to listen to and makes the subject material fascinating- would definitely take one of his courses again.
He was nice and I loved the material but he was boring and stuck to the slides pretty much all the time. His assignments were interesting though. No need to take ANTH1001 and 1002 because apparently he uses the exact same lectures and assignments for both
Honestly, Professor Kilmurry is pretty chill! he's pretty funny and is super easy to get in touch with through email. The class was honestly super easy. It included an essay, midterm and final... which were ALL super easy!
The class relies heavily on the textbook, which is written by the professor and is very expensive and filled with errors. Some of the chapters do include practice questions though which are very helpful for the midterm and exam. As long as you do the readings and attend lectures, I found the class to be relatively easy.
Terrible prof. He doesnt proofread a single email he sends or discussion he posts. He spelled office wrong for his office hours, always gets dates of things wrong. He confuses students more than anything then when asked for clarification he is rude and tells people to check his slide instead of simply answering the question.
Quite honestly the most useless professor. I've never experienced a class with a prof who could care so little for his/her students. Maybe if he cared more for his classes then it would be enjoyable but it's not. Especially since the term was done completely online, he did not correct audio issues for students and was rude, in all honesty.
Dr. Kilmurray is very unclear with his assignments and grading. He has never given rubrics and often contradicts himself. Many of his assignments were not on the class syllabus. When asked questions, Dr. Kilmurray would often give condescending answers to student questions. Grading/feedback was very unclear and unhelpful, especially for first year.
Prof Kilmurray was an okay professor. Although, he did not proof read anything in his email, he did not answer any questions you had and the way he places the work makes it hard to follow at times. Overall pretty easy class just boring af.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. There were tech issues, caused by him that he didn't fix despite all of us asking repeatedly-he was inaccessible but tbh no one would want to access him because he is so rude to students. Honestly it felt like he thought he was above us, that he was far too educated and superior to be teaching an intro course.
I lasted all of 3 days in this class before I dropped it. Had no idea what was going on. So many mixed signals. Unorganized and honestly just stressed me out. Maybe we can blame it on the online learning, but with it being second semester, youd think hed have atleast tried to clarify things for us.
To start, the textbook is actually mandatory bc it's written by him but despite this he still forced students buy it during the pandemic when so many ppl are obviously struggling financially. The reason I said it's not mandatory is bc it doesn't count as a legit source on any assignments (not even the final) so only buy once you feel forced to!!
His lectures were long and boring, and his feedback was minimal and vague. The midterm and final were essay questions where you choose 2 questions out of a few and write 1-2 pages (depending on the question). The final paper was long and we were given vague prompts, and he didn't give feedback to many students until right before it was due.
Its not worth taking this class as an elective. Straight up. Even if you do all the readings and lectures, the prof grades very tough on the papers. This is a class where you do not get rewarded for doing the work, so I would not recommend it to anyone trying get an decent elective credit. Also prof makes you buy a textbook by him
Professor Kilmurray gets a bad rep here. Hes a hard marker, but realistically its an introductory course, feel flattered if you get an 80%. He provides great office hours and is very responsive, but will not answer repetitive easy questions. Expect him to focus on Evolution and archaeology. Amazing, kind, and interesting-recommend him greatly
Worst prof I've had so far. My grandfather passed away a couple days before our final essay was due and when I asked for any type fo extension because I wouldn't be able to hand it in because I will not be going to school, he then asked me to provide "proof". I sent him my grandfathers obituary and he then said that th extension is "pushing it".
This course caused me stress and genuine anger once a week. Professor Kilmurray is not well adapted to online learning and makes not only lectures but also assignment criteria something you have to hunt for. Lectures are poorly recorded and unorganized. Examinations and assignments are inconsistent in instruction and little support is available.
Liam Kilmurray does not communicate with his students and acts like he's too good to be teaching a first year intro course. Over the semester we had 3 assignments plus our exam of writing 2 essays due weeks before when all the other exams usually start. Hard to reach and boring 2 hour long pre-recorded lectures. Would not recommend.
Email responses are not proof read, useless, and also childish in nature. Rubric is almost non-existent and vague and instruction are unclear. Feedback is vague as he himself has no idea how to grade based on his 'rubric' which he does not even follow in his grading. Very poor experience with this guy... does not care about his students at all.
Kilmurray's was the hardest course I've taken thus far in the social sciences/humanities. The lectures were dense and often required re-watching. He does not accept late work without deduction. However, his love of sociology and anthropology are infectious. I recommend if and only if you want the challenge.
He is a very hard grader, I thought I did amazing on the midterm, I knew everything and walked out so confidently. He gave me a 52... Really harsh. All papers needed to be handed in in-person. Way too strict with grading. Thanks a lot.
Dr.Kilmurray seems to abhor the fact that he teaches first year classes; questions about grading are met with angry and mean remarks. He belittles and is condescending towards students. This class was also inaccessible; no online uploads were allowed for essays, everything was to be handed in person during lectures.
I didn't find the class too hard, but he grades papers too harshly for someone who does not give back feedback until a month after the assignment's due date. Only takes assignments handed in paper. TA for the class was not organized and took off marks for participation, even though the tutorials were literally just him playing YouTube videos.
Liam Kilmurray was the worst professor I have ever had and I have never been more miserable in a class. Every single time I emailed him to ask a simple question he answered me like I was stupid. For example he would say unnecessary pretentious words and dumb them down in brackets. His lectures are boring and unnecessary. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!
was no help ever and was just extremely condescending and rude in his emails. I received marks off for handing in an essay late, even though I had approval FROM HIM and he did not fix it. took off literally 25% from the essay, and when I asked why, he gave absolutely no response. had to go through the formal grade appeal process with the uni.
hard to get on his good side. if you need any grades fixed/make up a grade its not an option, even with proof. (on syllabus says "same day replies" so you can email whenever, not stated only specific days) even though i only sent 4 emails regarding class work he emailed back and said he wont talk to me Lol. hard to recieve help from, etc.
I don't even need to be writing this review Liam because you know exactly what you did to me, but to all students thinking of taking one of his classes: DON'T. This man made my life a living hell because he is the DEVIL!!! He told me the only way I could get a good mark is if I preformed a satanic ritual after class and sold my soul to him...
Uses dated, misogynistic language and grazes over feminism as a sociological perspective. Reads straight off lecture slides, which were practically copy-pasted from the $170 textbook. save your money and your time.
All he did was read off the slides and not teach. He would put 150 words on one slide with size 6 font, spend 5 seconds on it, and not come back to it. Only made the textbook mandatory because he helped edit it and lots of his lectures are copied. He rambles and is passive-aggressive when you ask questions. Uses very dated and mysoginistic terms
Nearly impossible to get a good grade on assignments. Boring lectures which he goes through way too fast making it very difficult to take down notes. He sells his own textbook for 170$. Overall a terrible experience as a first year student
this prof is terrible especially when it comes to assignments,my advice for you reading this is to run away from his class,it will be the best decision you make in university
Is a well trained prof with boring lectures but if you pay attention they actually become pretty interesting, always got great marks as long as the rubric is followed closely
i showed up to the first 4 lectures, fell asleep in all 4 then never showed up. his lectures are very boring and long for no reason, his TA's mark everything for him and when he remarks stuff, the grade is always higher which doesn't make sense. But one thing is that he tries to sell us his hand written textbook for over 150 dollars to not use it.
Do not take this class! So boring, his lectures are just everything from the textbook, and the slides have a bunch of errors. He goes through the slides so fast you can hardly take proper notes, and he's incredibly monotone. I fell asleep a few times.
Had him in Fall 2023 and can confidently say he has been the worst prof I've ever encountered. He is beyond passive aggressive and nearly impossible to reach outside of class. He provided us with zero rubric or requirements for the paper worth 40% of our grade and refused to acknowledge any concerns from both students AND ta's. Avoid at all costs!!
Very nice and funny guy he's acc not that bad of a prof. Ive asked him a couple questions after class and was very helpful. however he posts his slides after the lecture and he's a bit of a fast speaker so it can be hard to follow along but everything is from the textbook. Assignments are worth a lot tho
To put it simply, he's rude and does not care about his students. He bases his courses almost entirely on Ireland (I guess that' interesting to some) and seems to use teaching as a way to sell his textbook. Even other professors don't like him. Avoid if possible.
Very rude. I was very sick so tried to email regarding writing an exam later or add the mark to my final. He was very passive aggressive and told me to drop the course as there is no hope for me. The weeks following he would cancel his lectures because he's sick...Take any other professor if you can.
He made us buy his OWN book that was near 200$ and I can't even resell it cuz no one wants it. His midterm questions were extremely since he used class ex, but for the essay he was so rude; he had given us a couple topics, I chose Durkheim & he gave me a 7/20 when I spoke about alot of stuff which I found wild, the class avg was 60 after that.
If you want your grade to be decided by a guy throwing a dart onto a spin wheel then this is your professor of choice. He will not follow his own rubric and guidelines to grade you assignments and will make up new random criteria to justify where the dart landed on his spin wheel.
Actually the worst prof I've ever had. Was naive enough to think these bad reviews were from bad students but truly, this is the worst prof I've ever encountered. RUN from this man. Not sure how he is still allowed to teach since many other profs and TAs have complained about him.
Liam was amazing at making you want to go to bed. He also makes you purchase his own textbook which is $100+. His course however was light work and all we had to do was a midterm, an exam and a final essay thats like 4 pages.
He is AMAZING! I went into this class dreading it after reading all the reviews. I can say confidently that I really don't get the bad reviews. It feels like these people just didn't show up the class and then complained about it. He has been very kind and funny during lectures and I look forward to going to this class. You will do well if you try!
Know what you're getting into. Marking is all over the place and he leaves literally no feedback. Lectures drag on, and the way he teaches some concepts is severely outdated. Textbook isn't super useful since 99% of the info is also covered in lecture. Only bonus is a light course load; only a midterm, like two short essays, and a final paper.
Would not recommend this prof/course if you are an Eng student looking for an easy course without no writing. Lectures are extremely boring if you are taking it as an elective and have no interest in the subject. Also worth noting that you receive absolutely little to no feedback on any of the assignments or tests. This is partially a Ta issue too.
