Took BILD 5 with Dr Mueller in WI'22 and he was absolutely amazing. The class itself was small with only 2 sections so he showed up personally during discussions to answer any questions. Also *super* accommodating and accessible outside of class. Definitely need more profs like him in the college.
The way he lectures is easy to listen to and easy to take notes on. Lots of opportunities to get points, and lowest grade for tests/activities get dropped. Tests are pretty much exactly what he says they'll be. Very accessible outside of class and very passionate about teaching. Honestly a really great professor!
Prof. Mueller was amazing!! Lots of extra credit opportunities and his midterm policy lets you skip the final if you do well on the rest of the tests! Mandatory attendance but that is what helped me learn the most that I could from the class. His style of teaching encourages understanding over memorization. The best prof I've had at UCSD so far!!!!
Prof. Mueller was an awesome professor. He was accommodating to students and explained material in a way that was easy to understand. His office hours are super super helpful. If you can, I'd rec going to them. Allows 1 pg study guide for exams (drops the lowest exam). Have weekly section assignments and in-class problem sets.
I took this class last quarter, I am not a genius in classes I am more like a B student and I got A. you need dedication and really study but he gives a lot of extra credits, In the final exam you can earn extra credit that sum up to one of your last midterms, the grading in midterms sometimes can be a little bit unfair but It depends in your TA's
One of the best professors I've taken. I already took BIMM 100 before BICD 100 and it honestly felt like an easier review. You can drop the final, a clicker, and one section assignment. Had in class paper assignments which were nerve wracking but if you're following along during lecture, you should be fine.
If he taught all my classes I would be 1000 times happier. He actually knows how to teach. Despite feeling dead and tired bc my class was at 6:30-8pm, I never got bored from his lectures. Discussions were nice practice, and the ethics discussions were rlly fun.
GREAT instructor. I took him for BILD 5. Even if you are not interested in statistics, coding, or biology ethics, he is a fantastic person. He showed up to the first 4 weeks of discussion. He cares about your success. Lectures are mandatory, attending discussions is NOT mandatory but very useful and worth your time.
Professor Mueller is not like most teachers. While in lecture, it is hard to NOT feel engaged with the material. Every time he says something you know it will be worth listening to and something you can grasp. If he feels like something is important then he will spend additional time on it instead of moving on to follow a set schedule. 10/10
Mr. Mueller is funny and awesome. His lectures are always worth your time to attend. He is reliable if you need help with the coding or with the material, since he is always there at office hours, whether in Zoom or in-person. Overall, a wonderful experience to be in his class.
He's so goated.
He's a really great teacher and his lectures are entertaining but he uses an autograder on the homework so if there is a small issue, you get a 0 and he refuses to change it to be "fair" to everyone else. Other than that, its the easiest bio class I've ever taken.
He's really nice and you can tell he really loves what he does. If you took statistics in high school or Math11 before, this class is manageable. If not like me, this class is pretty hard. I personally can't understand half the stuff he's talking about. Like Im so lost. And this isn't a real bio class, it's a coding and statistics class for bio.
overall great.
Great Professor, would definitely recommend him for this class. As long as you show up to class, you'll understand the material. The lectures are clear and he dedicates time for you to discuss with the people around you. He does participation checks but allows you 2-3 weeks of lecture. I didn't spend more than an hour per week outside class.
Terrible professor. He's rude when students come in for office hours and shamed my friend assuming that she didn't do any of the work and doesn't put effort based on how she looked when I had seen her work so much for this class. He doesn't give enough practice for the final, I basically taught myself, and lectures were very confusing.
Avoid at all costs. He uses an auto grader for most assignments, that gives 0's all the time. Lectures were super confusing, had to teach myself most of the material. Rude and unapproachable. Would not recommend at all. Had a very bad experience with this class.
The entire quarter felt extremely focused in R coding just for the final to be completely conceptual. The final project is confusing. U have to deal with a final project and exam. Zero for an assignment due to the auto grader and when I brought it up to him he did not do anything. Assignments are graded very slowly. Not enough practice for final.
Great prof, despite the large class size he made sure that everyone's needs were addressed. discussion sessions are very critical to succeeding if u are new to code. Liam is very caring and makes you think more about the bigger picture. cannot recommend enough!
This professor is very chill but the assignments given throughout the quarter DO NOT reflect anything on the final. Given a final project and a final but no midterms. The class is lecture heavy, as everything he taught was more conceptual. It isn't helpful when it comes to the final since all the assignments are coding in r. Had to teach myself.
Dr. Mueller's class was poorly organized and frustrating. Assignments focused on R coding, but the final was entirely conceptual, leaving students unprepared. The auto grader gave unfair zeroes, and concerns were ignored. Lectures didn't help, and office hours were dismissive. The confusing final project added stress. Avoid this class.
Dr. Mueller is not a fair professor. Weekly assignments consist of one R problem set, a discussion, and a theory quiz. HOWEVER, the final exam is nothing like the assignments or lectures. I got so many zeros because of the auto-grader error, but my emails regarding my grades are not being answered. Avoid taking this class with him if possible.
The lectures are super conceptual, but the homework assignments are all coding in R, which you do not learn in lecture, making them super confusing. He uses an autograder that gives 0's all the time, and will never answer your emails to fix it. Super rude and condescending when I have asked for help. If you can, take another professor!
Mueller's lectures were great; he's very passionate. The lectures are statistics based and the discussions focus on coding statistics tests in R. He encourages using AI. The final exam was easier than the course, but the final project required thinking. If you understand the main ideas and pay attention in lectures, you'll do good in class.
Prof. is passionate about the subject which is nice, but because of that, lectures get confusing quickly. Final exam was easy with theory and interpreting, no coding even though all the HW is coding. You can use AI for HW but its better to just do it yourself so you actually understand what your doing; it'll make the final easier.
Avoid at all costs, most passive aggressive man I've met to this day. Complains about the large number of students in his lecture when he single handedly made BILD 5 a requirement for ALL UCSD biology undergrads. Auto grader is incorrect, he is constantly upset and annoyed during lecture, and he ruins what could've been an interesting course.
Very doable to get an A. There are weekly assignments based on code that can be difficult but its very easy to get 100% on them if you get help from the TAs. There is a final project which is not bad. Final was kind of hard but the class avg was decent. Overall if you actually try in the assignments it's easy to get an A. He gives good extra credit
Overall, his lectures are based on statistical analysis, but his homework assignments are based on R studio coding, which you have to figure out independently since he doesn't teach you how to code. There's no midterm, so there isn't much to prepare for the final other than his weekly quizzes, which weren't too helpful. He's also passive aggressive
istg he's the leader of the sassy man apocalypse and I've never experienced a honeymoon phase THIS BAD before. bc at the beginning of class, he seemed so genuine but by week 3 he was displaying clear characteristics of an avoidant attachment style.
Professor is knowledgable and passionate, but this can make it hard to keep up because he thinks students already know the material. Lectures are theory based, homework is coding. Homework grading is finicky (autograde), and emailing about issues is a gamble. Fall 2024 final was much more difficult than the practice questions provided to prepare.
professor was clearly passionate about the subject, and office hours could be helpful, but the lectures moved way too fast to keep up with. we didn't have midterms so the final was hard to prepare for since we had no idea what questions could be on it. its easy to get an A as long as you're consistent with the weekly assignments though
The assignments are done using ChatGPT code and it basically grades you on how well Chat was able to come up with code. The final was not based on the lecture content and the final exam was not passing. Very confused how this course is required for Bio majors now, it is more like a CS class. I don't recommend :(.
Very difficult class. His final had a good amount of information that he did not cover in class. His autograder messes up a lot. Discussions are helpful. Office hours are a mess bc everyone goes. You need to put a lot of extra work into this class to get a good grade. Mueller is nice and validates your concerns but he isn't the most accommodating.
Really weird course, weekly coding assignments are semi difficult, you really need to go to OH to do well. Feel like I honestly learned nothing from this course, lectures were confusing, weekly quizzes honestly tell you nothing about the final, but if you do well on all the weekly assignments you can do horrible on the final and be fine (me!)
There's a lot of extra credit opportunities so definitely take advantage. The coding assignments were pretty challenging so for me going to office hours or seeing the ta was a must. Lectures can be a bit confusing so be sure to go to his final review session at the end as that really helps with the final
Honestly I wasn't even paying attention for most of the quarter and just cram studied the day before the final and it ended up ok. His autograder for the weekly homework screws up sometimes. He drops a few of the lowest scores on the homework and weekly quizzes, so you can afford a few bad grades. Lectures are pretty good and recorded too.
I genuinely disagree with most of the negative comments here. Prof Mueller is highly approachable and really cares his students. His lectures are not confusing at all if you pay attention. Abundant OH and tries his best to answer questions. His auto-grader is a bit problematic but you can always go to his OH to ask for re-grading.
going to write a "why i hate the letter R" essay because of this class :|
So passive aggressive, tells you to trust the process with coding but then doesn't help at with teaching you how to code. Don't understand why he is upset that there is so many people taking his class when he made this class a requirement to graduate whatever thank god I am done
The lectures were not very content heavy and he talked to a point of confusion sometimes, but the discussions were very helpful. Crib sheet for the final (2 sided).
Make sure you understand the assignments for the final!!! Cause they will all show up. He is a chill professor. Not a hard class but good amount of work every week.
Professor Mueller is passionate about the subject he teaches and is more than willing to discuss homework issues outside of class. The homework can be completed without going to discussion just by using common sense and Google. R is simple to code in and is basically Python for statisticians. The final is just the weekly quizzes.
It was an alright class. The professor himself is chill although he doesn't necessarily teach you how to code. If you attend office hours and discussion I'm sure you will be fine. Weekly quizzes, discussion post, and coding homework. If you aren't very good at stats you will definitely have to study for the final. No midterms.
This class was okay until the final. I had a 99 in the class and the final dropped my grade down to an A-. Found the final unfair and he didn't prep us correctly and didn't curve when the average was failing... He was also somewhat unapproachable and rude in office hours. Class itself wasn't the worst thing ever but I would not recommend him.
This class and professor were fine. My only issue was the amount of side convos that happened during lectures that the professor would just keep talking over instead of saying something. Otherwise, the class is pretty straightforward with weekly assignments, a final exam, and final project.
I found the coding to not be that hard if you went to the discussion sections. However, he doesn't teach you how to code directly. He was really bad at teaching the statistics aspect of the class and did not prepare us for the final. I found his lectures to be decently interesting, besides the fact that I barely understood what he was saying.
Great guy, you can tell that he's passionate about what he teaches. I went into this class with prior experience in Python, but I can see why the coding aspect would be hard for those learning how to code for the first time; there's plenty of office hours for that reason. I feel like I left having learned a lot!
class felt like it had no direction. You have to code and they don't teach you besides throwing links to try and sift through to find something remotely similar to what you are using. He gave "practice" questions that did not prepare anyone for the final and we all had a low avg. This class was a waste of time and something chat GPT do better.
At first he seems chill but his final exam is ridiculously hard and NOTHING like any of the hw/lectures. He's super stingy with giving out extra points. Not the best lecturer. His PPT's are not helpful. Attending lecture is required but a complete waste of time. Use chatgpt and the textbook to stay up to date with the topics or else you're screwed
This class was an absolute waste of time. I could not tell you one thing I learned in class. He is very passive aggressive, and an awful lecturer and his lecture slides make no sense. He did no prepare us AT ALL for the final. His weekly homework assignments are NOTHING like his final exam.
Despite having 0 coding skills, still did well on the problem sets + did well on final (taken fall qtr). Go to review sessions + section. Final was more representative of practice sets than quizzes. Free textbook. Very fun to listen to. Makes you think about what you know about stats and science. 0 stats and coding knowledge needed prior.
hes pretty funny, however, content wise his teaching is a little confusing! the beginning is simple enough, the coding is actually not that bad, if you attend discussion and use the links within the assignments. concepts are a little hard to follow, but if you pay attention in lecture it should not be that bad, provides a pretty good practice exam
He was a decent professor. I was honestly very lost at times and had to figure things out on my own a lot. I know a lot of people were good up until W5 and then they're grades dipped so make sure you go to oh to confirm your work is right bc you can't afford low scores on assignments for the final. He was approachable for content not grades.
He was very approachable for office hours. He droops two of the lowest assignments. Coding assignments were hard after week5. Final was pretty fair and required knowledge of assignments.
His final exam was basically all lecture-based and I feel like his study guide didn't help me personally. Do good on theory checks and weekly assignments and you'll pass. I lowkey stopped understanding his lectures after week 5 so my advice would be: PLEASE GO TO OFFICE HOURS! GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT!!!
As long as you go to section and keep up with the homework, you will do good in the class. He's very clear about the criteria of what you need to do to earn the grade you want in the class. Make sure to study for the final and make a good quality crib sheet. Lecture attendance is counted in grading, section attendance is not but I recommend going.
Really nice guy kinda moody at times though, and he talks almost like in code sometimes in lecture and it did get super confusing and like ?HW is ALOT and frustrating with the code part. I basically lived in office hours though and got/had an A the whole term, the final killed me to a B.Weekly code HW and DP w/ no midterms just final and it's HARD.
It was probably my bad for not taking Math 11/Stats first, but I did not understand anything. His teaching style did not work for me. He's from a liberal arts school, and his lectures kinda feel like that - like instead of giving you an answer, he will ask you a question instead, but he gives enough assignments. I failed the final but got a B.
Took him during SS125. Can miss up to 2 lectures and discussions were optional. 5 coding assignments in total. Lecture was 4x a week and discussion was 2x a week. Theory checks are on Canvas and are graded automatically and coding assignments were graded by grader. IA's graded final project and final was mcq + similar to review final provided.
Really good Liam Mueller goat
So much work in this class. All the work you learn in discussion has nothing to do with the lectures. The lectures are really boring and hard to pay attention to. There is no midterm which is good I guess but then you don't know how lost you are until its too late
Dr. Liam Mueller is absolutely amazing! His lectures are engaging, interesting, well-thought-out, and well-delivered. He is always there to support students and discuss challenging topics during office hours. He is just the kind of professor who is delightfully understanding and caring.
Dr. Mueller is very passionate during lecture and structures his class (lecture, assignments) logically and in an engaging format.. he cares to answer questions during and after his lectures and made a comfortable atmosphere for students w. little/no statistics + coding experience!!
Attendance is mandatory and will be graded With Dr. Mueller's teaching, I dont see a reason to skip this class, lectures engaging. Introductory bio-stats class with a fair amount of coding absolutely no background to stats needed. Very clear grading scale, 1 weekly quiz dropped 1 coding assignment dropped, no midterms, 1 final, 1 project, some EC.
Great class! Big emphasis on coding in R (you don't have to be good tho). Lectures are more theory and data analysis content-based, but sometimes he guides you through a code. A few extra credit points if you complete his surveys at the beginning and end of the quarter. Sections are not mandatory but good to go the first few weeks.
Took it without math 11 and was chilling, you just need to have a firm understanding of the 5 main statistical tests and youll be fine (which he is very upfront about), the discussion and lecture are pretty separate but the R assignments are fully explained by TA's if you show up to discussion, great guy but i was lowk scared to approach him 😭
I have to give him this 5/5 because even though I submitted the wrong file for my final project and didn't notice until he graded them and got a 0, he still gave me almost full credit back after hearing me out which saved me from dropping to a B. The material will feel confusing at times but know that he is very understanding and accessible.
Prof. Mueller gave around 9 points of extra credit, very generous. Lectures were great. Final theory based, so recommend watching all the lecture podcasts to review. Also the practice exams he gives match the final exactly. Coding assignments weren't bad, go to office hours or discussion if you're confused. Theory check questions were all fair.
Lectures were thought-provoking in a fun way. When the content is first introduced, it feels a bit complex, but as the course progresses, things gradually start making more sense. The same thing applies to the coding assignments. Never went to any office hours, but he makes it clear that he's always willing to help. Decent EC opportunities too.
Good professor and the mandatory lectures were interesting for the most part. The final is easy if you know the 5 tests and have a good cheat sheet, and the final project is easy if you go to the discussion sections for your weekly section assignments (I was able to finish in discussion every time). Most of your grade are those two things.
A LOT of extra credit but no midterm, so your grade relies on the final a bit. As long as you know the five tests and do well on assignments (go to section!) you'll be fine. Some of the questions are tricky, but not too bad. If you're struggling, Dr. Mueller is very accessible outside of class, and he's really helpful - he also responds to emails.
He is awesome, loved how his lectures incorporated things that are supper applicable to real life. Gives a lot of extra credit too.
Dr. Mueller is the GOAT. For an introductory biostats course, you don't need any prior experience or MATH 11. As long as you pay attention in lecture (mandatory) & section, you'll learn the material. If you're lost, go to office hours and section (optional), and you'll succeed. Extra credit & grading are very generous. No midterms; only one final.
Inspirational lectures talking about statistics and biology ethics. Lecture is mandatory but discussion is not, just coding . HW is weekly coding project + canvas quiz. No midterm, final coding project and exams. Materials covered on exams are fair if you understand all past exams. He has many office hours and that helps. Generous grader.
I basically lived in his and his TA's office hours. The coding was fun but sometimes difficult. He does let you use online resources to complete assignments and quizzes. He is a cool professor who truly wants you to understand coding and stats. He offers lots of extra credit and curves at the end.
Amazing professor!! His lectures were nice to go to and very interactive. The discussion sections were very helpful as well. The ta's were very patient and explained everything very well. You can tell he really cares for his students and truly wants them to succeed. I will definitely take Professor Mueller again if he teaches other classes!
Choose him! Highly recommend
great professor, funny guy
unpopular opinion, but i loved this class a lot! mueller's lectures were always very interesting, and the material he covers is very useful to know if ur in a lab / want to do research. i would recommend reviewing the weekly theory checks to study for the final, as the homework is all coding and not really useful to study from
Be prepared to code (using R). Offers a bit of Extra Credit only for the 1st week and small stuff later. DOUBLE CHECK code, since two big mess ups or a good amount of small mess ups on HW will mess up your grade fast. He goes very in-depth in lectures and really cares about your understanding even with small or not covered topics (if relevant).
The professor himself is great, but the coding was hard with no prior knowledge. This class is weirdly difficult since its a mix of biology, coding, and statistics and theres no clear curriculum. The main difficulty was in exams, its hard to know the right answer since usually the answer he wants is different from the "correct" answer.
This racist professor is the most dyslexic professor I have ever seen in the face of this country. He is mentally retarded and should be teaching genetics at a middle school. That is his level of teaching ability.
I found prof to be engaging. Discussion was helpful, TAs introduce that week's HW & most of the time's doing HW w/ TAs around to help. HW's coding in R, harder w/o prior coding knowledge since lecture focuses on stats content. More focus on R later in quarter. Lots of useful OH between prof and TAs'. No midterm, all MCQ final w/ 1 pg cheat sheet
