Interesting class, passionate about subject, somewhat difficult, but well worth the work.
Had her for African History 1 and 2. She is the best, made class fun and interesting. The one class you do't want to miss.
Had her for History 1865 to present. It was the best history class I ever had. She makes it interesting with her enthusiasm for history and her little stories. A lot of reading to do, but you need to read for her class.
regardless of the fact that i'd like to bang her, the class was very interesting and fair.
this lady is white and she taught me a whole lot about my history!!! She can do da damn thang!!! go ahead LIANN she was definitely off da hook!! EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE HER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY!!!!!!!!
not that easy, but very interesting. You need to do a lot of reading and to go every recitation in order to do well.
Gave me an appreciation for Women's Studies, which hitherto I was lacking. Stimulated my thinking as well. Always very friendly and accesible, although sometimes I wondered if was really listening. Still, her class was something to look forward to.

Unlike most profs at Pitt, Liann doesn't baby her students. She expects them to be able to comprehend and critique writing at the cutting edge of the field. To get an 'A', you need to think at grad level. Fantastic lecturer. Hard papers, easy tests.
pretty good teacher, but she kind of got on my nerves sometimes, because she spent a little too much time on feminism, etc. for me

Wow. What a great teacher. The class is NOT easy, but it is really fun! It was my favorite class of the semester, but it was my lowest grade, too. Proves that fun can make up for difficulty!! TRY HER OUT...You wont be sorry!
lianne is awesome, her class is pretty easy, but more importantly its very interesting. she knows her stuff and has alot of inciteful things to say. she taught me an important part of history a suburban white girl otherwise wouldnt have learned. her class is great and she is as well.
History of African Americans after the Civil War part 2 is probably the most interesting class I've ever taken, not just because of the topic, but because Liann is so intriguing and so interested in the topic that her energy makes the rest of the class want to learn as well.
she is very nice and funny and willing to help you. her papers are graded pretty hard, but her tests are incredibly easy. i recommend her above the other US Hist 1865-present profs on the basis of mine and my friends' experiences.
very smart woman. seriously knows and cares about the material more than any other prof ive had. lots of reading, but an interesting course.
She is a great teacher, very interesting and has tons of great stories about historical events that you won't get from any textbooks. Added bonus is that she has a great sense of humor, sarcastic and able to laugh at herself and admit mistakes. Recommend to anyone, not just history majors!
Lian is a great teacher and really wants everyone to be interested in what she's teaching. Tests can be a little tricky, but study the guides and you'll be fine. She loves it, so you'll love her!
just great
Writing Seminar and the paper was not nearly as back as I thought it would be. She is very helpful and accessible. I am very very glad I got her as the instructor. I enjoyed the subject of the 1960's also.
Liann is one of the best professors that I've had at Pitt. She is extremely knowledgeable and a fascinating lecturing. She gives you time to digest and really discuss the reading materials and gives you a sense of the fundamental imortance of what you're studying.
Liann is definitely the best professor I had in my undergrad studies. She is more than willing to make sure you excel in any task you put your mind to.
Liann is an amazing teacher! She is really interested in African-American history and loves teaching it. She gets everyone involved and makes every class interesting. She genuinely cares about each student. Her class is also easy to get a good grade in. Fun class + good grades... you do the math.
She knows her stuff!! Definitely the most enthusiastic professor i've had so far. She's a good storyteller, funny, exciting, and gets you involved. Also her test are easy.
This class was very easy except for the essays. The TA is an extremely hard grader, but the exams are a breeze. There is also an extra credit assignment which is 2% added to your final grade. She was also very interesting and intelligent. Recommend taking if you need an easy history class.
Liann is really nice and energetic. She loves the subject she teaches and her lectures are so interesting. There arent many assignments or tests but I was unclear on what she wanted for them when we did have them.
In my last semester at Pitt she managed to beat out Carmen DiCiccio as my favorite all-time professor here--a position DiCiccio held since I first came to Pitt in 2005. Not only is she funny and easy-going, she's easy to talk to, easy to contact, and makes lectures fun.
she was very helpful. kept class interesting. very easy to do well on her essays if you work hard and tests are very easy as well. definitely the most straightforward class of my semester
I've had a lot of awful teachers...Liann Tsoukas makes up for every one of them. Her lectures are important for tests and are anything but boring, and recitations are extremely helpful. Just do the work and don't fall behind and you'll be fine. She's more than willing to help and by far the easiest teacher to contact. Definitely take her classes!
She is so good, I may just try and get a history minor so I can take more of her classes.
The best professor I've had at Pitt. She is knowledgeable and helpful. She actually wants the students to do well. She loves what she is doing and that makes the class wonderful
Professor Tsoukas should teach EVERY modern American history class. Engaging, well-versed, and an extremely good teacher. If only she weren't married...
Awesome professor. Played music/video clips before each class. Tests are very straight-forward and the papers are graded easily as long as you put SOME effort into them. She gets to know everyone in her 120+ student lectures. Personable, funny, approachable. Best professor ever.
Liann is FANTASTIC. Took her class just to have her, it was well worth it. She is engaging and knowledgeable on the course topics and interested in what the students have to say in class. She also chooses interesting readings, and doesn't require much from you besides thoughts on them and contribution to class discussion. Also, she is just fun.
BY FAR MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR SINCE I'VE BEEN AT PITT. Paper topics aren't bad at all; If you get a chance to take African American history II with her, do it! You won't regret it, she's very dynamic and genuinely interested in what she's teaching & it's easy to pay attention You might need a laptop though, she talks pretty fast! :)
Liann is the best history professor in the department, that I've had. It's no wonder there is a line to get into her seminar. She is a very engaging lecturer and a very understanding person. Gives reasonable assignments and grades fairly. This class is very easy if you make a legitimate effort. Honestly, even if you don't you'll still do decent.
She is very passionate about the subject. Lectures are not hard to sit through because of this. The tests were simple enough if you attended class. The books were long but essay prompts were easy. Take her!
Really recommend her as a professor. Go to class though, because she doesn't put any notes or lecture slides online.
Liann is one of the best professors I have ever had. She takes the time for each student and truly cares. There are 2 exams, midterm and final (not cumulative), 2 "book reports", and five 1-2 page Q&As that are very simple. Definitely would love to take another class from her.
Honestly, a great professor and person! A great one to reach out to, she's always there for her students. Lectures are interesting, but you must go to class because they aren't posted online. Class is broken into 5 parts: 1 midterm, 1 final (not cumulative), 2 papers, and recitation. Show up, listen, take notes, and you will do fine!
She is my favorite prof I had at Pitt so far. I would definately recommend her to any student. I hated history and thought her class was going to be horrible but I was dead wrong. Greatest class I took at Pitt. Love her!!
I am so glad I got to have Liann as a prof. Her lectures were interesting and engaging every time. She is also a very fair grader. Would recommend 10/10
She assigns weekly writing assignments and there is almost one a week. Also, there's a five page paper and a 3-4 page essay on a book during your recitation. The midterm and final exam are all terms that she gives you beforehand plus a 2 page essay. This class requires a lot of writing, reading, and memorization.
You can easily tell Liann is passionate about her classes and the material she teaches. However, this class is difficult if you don't have full interest in it. There are writing assignments nearly every week (2-3 pages) and a 5 page paper and a 4 page essay on Malcolm X and a midterm with 60 terms to memorize along with an essay (final is same).
Liann really loves what she's doing. However, if you take this course, be warned; there are a lot of papers, essays, and reading. Every week, there's a 2-3 page paper, a 5-6 paper, 4 page essay on Malcolm X (you have to prepare for 4 prompts), and the midterm/final required you to memorize 100 terms and write a 3 page essay. You need to focus.
Tsoukas blends her narrative with lecture, which makes it very interesting. Although she is a little disorganized and not the most tech savvy, it is clear she loves what she does. She is incredibly engaging during class, and has once chased a student who left early, started waltzing with one, among other things. Has 2 papers on 2 different books.
Liann is by far the best professor I've ever had in my college career. She structures the class to make sure that while your other classes are killing you, hers isn't. She cares about students and is always accessible. She recognizes her short-comings and addresses them directly. She's fun and funny and truly engaging!
Liann is an amazing lecturer. She is always funny and captivating during class. Two papers, midterm and a final. There are quizzes but she gives you the questions ahead of time so they're easy to take. She makes an effort to get to know her students. Definitely take this class if you get the opportunity.
An OUTSTANDING professor. She makes you work for your grade but she makes the class so entertaining. She really cares for her students and wants you to do well in class. I actually loved going to lecture. If I could I would take all my classes with her. 10/10 recommend. The test are straight from her study guides, you just have to do the work.
If every professor were like Professor Tsoukas, I would probably have 4.0. She really has a passion for the subject, which is quite infectious; I am a history buff, so I may be biased. Her & Cordelia Brazile, TA, were quite an amazing team and were so helpful for the two exams we had. By far my favorite professor!
Dr. Tsoukas is absolutely amazing. She is hands down the best professor I've had so far at Pitt. She's very engaging and keeps you entertained during lecture. I can't wait to take another one of her classes. If you are not a fan of history but need the gen ed, I would recommend this class.
Professor Tsoukas was a great professor my freshman year. She's the reason I decided to get my history minor. She tells you at the beginning of the semester that you start off strong and taper off, because she doesnt want you to be too stressed out towards the end of the year because so many profs pile on. ALOT of reading, but easy if you enjoy it.
Many of the graded assignments were not based on lecture, but there was attendance checks and quizzes. Lectures were not too painful for the morning. Pretty good gen-ed to take, You have to put in the work, but not difficult. Memorization like most history classes I guess.
Professor Tsoukas is pretty great. She makes sure the course is interesting to everyone, not just history majors. She also makes sure everyone understands how the course is taught and graded early on. A great class to take for history requirements.
Dr. Tsoukas is an amazing professor. Her lectures are fun, engaging, and interesting. She really cares for her students and truly wants us to get a good grade. The class overall is pretty easy and doesn't need much outside work aside from the essays. I haven't read the textbook and have still been doing really well. Highly recommend this class.
Liann is an absolutely AMAZING professor. I had her for my capstone (it was on race and blackness in America) and let me tell you I learned SO much. She really cares about her students and wants to see you succeed. For the capstone, just before thanksgiving we stopped meeting so we could focus on our papers and she was always available for feedback
Prof. Tsoukas is a great professor. Her lectures are super interesting and she's hilarious and very down to earth. Took her for US History- lots of reading you probably should keep up with, and 5 two page papers and 2 five page papers. However her class is very do-able and the exams are not too bad. Definitely would take again!
Really fun class, she's great and obviously enjoys history and it really helps the students learn too. Not too hard for an intro class, did require a lot of attendance though and a surprising amount of writing. I think she needs better TAs, I don't blame her for the workload and essay grading.
I'm not into history and she made going to her class very enjoyable. I absolutely love Dr. Tsoukas and I wish I had gotten to know her more personally. Lectures are interesting and informative but you still need to read the book to do well. There was a lot of outside reading and writing but overall, you will learn a lot if you put in the effort.
Although there was a lot of reading and preparation needed to do well in her class, her lectures were entertaining and her expectations were clear. She wanted her students to do well and gave everyone opportunities to improve throughout the semester. Definitely recommend her class!
Prof. Tsoukas is such an amazing teacher and makes the course so interesting. The class has you write 5 mini papers (literally 600 words or less) and two 5 page papers. You can get out of the final if you have a 93, and she gave us lots of extra credit options for the final (up to 7 points). If you can, you should take her!
Dr. Tsoukas is an amazing professor and interesting lecturer. The class is a lot of work, but the material is interesting and presented in a nice way. Attendance is mandatory, but helps boost your grade. She also allows extra credit opportunities, and if you have a 93 by the end of the semester, you do not have to take the final.
An absolutely amazing professor and woman. She is sooo passionate about the topic which is shown through truly engaging and eye-opening lectures that changes the narrative of what you are usually taught about certain events. Made me consider a history minor
Dr. Tsoukas lectures are so interesting. She is very passionate about history and welcomes discussion in class. The switch to online learning has been seamless in her class since her expectations are clear and she is very organized. I highly recommend Dr. Tsoukas, especially if Pitt will be online again in the Fall semester.
Liann is such a wonderful professor. She really cares about your development in the class and makes you want to learn! Also very understanding and personable. Definitely take one of her classes at some point.
I absolutely loved Dr. Tsoukas. I'm an engineering major and took this class as an easy elective. We had to write a big paper and 5 mini papers. She said our mini papers were so good, she ended up cancelling the final. Extra credit was an option and grading is extremely fair. I hate writing so much but still found this class enjoyable and an A.
Dr. Tsoukas is a great teacher. This class was super interesting and the discussions we have are very engaging. We had 2 large essays and 5 small responses and discussion board. Quizzes but the top 5 were counted. There is a lot of opportunities and choices to complete the work. The lecture material is engaging as well. Interesting novels to read.
I loved this class! It can be a lot of reading and writing but she's not too tough of a grader. There's more work in the beginning of the semester than the end to balance out with the rest of your classes. The class was pretty much all discussion based and the writing was mostly opinion based so it wasn't too bad. Definitely a must take course!
Dr. Tsoukas is an amazing professor and I learned so much from this class! Class consists of weekly discussion boards, 2 writing assignments, midterm + final essay. Lots of interesting material and engaging discussions! Beginning of the semester has a lot more heavy reading involved, but it decreases overtime. Definitely recommend!!!
Easily my favorite professor at Pitt. Took the class for a GenEd and it ended being my favorite class this semester. As long as you get the work done, you'll be fine. The only bad thing about it is assignments are due at 5pm but as long as you stay on top of things, you'll be fine.
Such a good professor. Very passionate about what she does and this is portrayed in her lectures. Took this class as a GenEd and If I could take more classes with Dr. Tsoukas I would. Not a huge workload but everything is due at 5 pm so you have to stay on top of everything.
Class was always really interesting. Even the readings for the essays were interesting.
liann is so cool and laid-back. only graded on 2 papers and some discussion Qs but they are pretty easy. her lectures are so interesting and i loved going to class! i'd take anything with her! also a fair grader imo
Take this class! Not too difficult, flexible work schedule. Lots of reading/writing but that's gonna come with any history course. Would definitely recommend.
She was my favorite professor ive had so far. grades were based on 5 reading responses, 5 quizzes, and 2 essays along with participation. If you do the work, youll get a good grade
Best history prof. She's so knowledgeable on every subject and will help you brainstorm ideas for papers. Class had weekly quizzes and 1pg papers but they were easy and graded generously. Had you write two 5pg papers as a midterm and final but gives you plenty of time and notice to write them. Her lectures are interesting and she loves her students
Class was overall easy. You do have to read two books but they aren't hard or demanding. The recitation however I felt didn't add anything to the class but was still simple. Professor Tsoukas was my favorite professor I had so far though!
Very forgiving about grades. She is very flexible to your schedule
Professor Tsoukas is truly a gem. I enjoyed each and every class because she is so clearly passionate about history and very knowledgeable on the subject. Definitely pay attention in class for help on papers- which shouldn't be too hard since lectures are so interesting! Seriously considering a history minor because of her.
Dr. Tsoukas is passionate and genuinely cares about her students. The lectures are fast-paced but engaging, and you can tell that she loves to teach. She's flexible and willing to accommodate to any needs you may have. The class is easy as long as you do the readings, quizzes, and attend class. I hope I can take Dr. Tsoukas again in the future.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. Dr.Tsoukas is a great lecturer and very passionate and knowledgeable about the contents covered in this course. She is a very compassionate and understanding professor and is easily accessible outside of class. She truly wants to see you succeed. I cannot recommend her enough!
Dr. Tsoukas is an amazing professor! Her lectures are very engaging and you can tell she loves her job. She cares about her students and provides feedback on exams/quizzes. Her final was a "scaffolded" assignment where you wrote multiple smaller essays earlier on and wrote the final based on those.
arguably the best professor I've had at pitt. I joined the class late but she caught me up to speed quickly. I wish I put more effort into her class as for a non-history major, she made the content really engaging and exciting, but I had an academic slump. She makes it possible to get an excellent grade and loves to help out her students
Very engaging in lectures. She was so nice. Had lots of detail presented but it was clear and easy to understand. Only 5 open note online quizzes for the whole year along with 2 papers. Weekly reading
She's an energetic and captivating prof/lecturer that knows a LOT about history. Her powerpoints are easy to follow, and have a ton of info on them. She does give you a ton of readings to do on your own time, but you can skim them to get the gist. Our grade comes from attendance, hw assignments, a midterm paper, and final paper.
She is super sweet and a very intelligent woman. I can tell she is passionate about history and knows a lot. The only thing I struggled with was her volume. She yells quite a bit during lectures and claps while talking. I personally struggled with this. Overall, I enjoyed her class and everything I learned. I think she is an amazing professor.
She is very nice and knowledgeable but is unreliable over email so I would recommend going to office hours. She's kind of a tough grader but gives good feedback. All of your assignments are based on the textbook so lecture isn't helpful but is mandatory. This class is interesting but you still have to put in decent effort.
She was disorganized in both lectures and on Canvas so it was difficult to determine what needed to be done and when. Gave good feedback at the beginning of the term, but at the end gave none. She also would get annoyed if nobody immediately volunteered to participate in class. The class itself is not hard, but the disorganization was frustrating
Professor Tsoukas is genuinely the best professor I've had at Pitt. She is extremely passionate, witty, and makes her lectures super interesting and informative. She is very caring and empathetic, a fair grader, and makes herself accessible outside of class. The coursework is extremely manageable if you read the material and participate in class.
Prof Tsoukas is amazing. I was just taking this class for a gen-ed but she made it so fun and interesting. However, it's not the easiest class and does require some effort. There's a lot of readings, a midterm and final essay, and some discussion posts throughout the semester. A big part of your grade is also based on participation. Easy grader tho
Very passionate and makes sure lectures are always very interesting and entertaining. There are quizzes every Thursday that are based on the readings for the week, but you only need to do five of them to get credit. Document responses are due most Wednesdays but you only need to do five as well. There is a midterm essay and a final essay. No tests.
She is a very passionate and kind professor. There is a quiz every week in recitation but if you read the textbook chapters they are very straightforward. 12 quizzes offered in the semester but only the top 5 count, same with the document responses. 2 essays each worth 15% instead of midterm and final. Overall a great class to take for gen-ed.
Attendance is mandatory but 3 skips allowed, weekly quizzes in recitation based on reading, but only 5 count towards your grade. document response essay every week, but only need to do 5. midterm paper and final paper, no exams. overall great class to take for a gen-ed, was interesting and not too much work and Dr. Tsoukas is awesome!
Liann is super sweet. This class is lecture and recitation so you do more hands on work with the grad TA. There is an attendance code for lectures, 5 1-2pg weekly essays that you can complete at any point in the semester, and two bigger essays. Textbook isn't necessary if you pay attention in lecture, but essays are based on primary source docs.
Class was so free, attendance is mandatory which is the only reason I went but honestly get the code and you could skip. You only need to pay attention to the one lecture you give a recap for. Prof was okay nothing too great or notable about her.
Dr. Tsoukas is a fantastic lecturer, she is clearly passionate about the content and about teaching.. There is more work in the beginning but once you finish your 5 document responses and 5 quizzes, it is smooth sailing (other than two 4-5 page papers). Overall, very interesting content and a great experience.
Professor Tsoukas is passionate and engaging, though her lectures can be fast-paced. The class is manageable as long as you stay on top of the readings and assignments. Unstuck study was a helpful study tool alongside the free textbook.
Professor Tsoukas can be a great professor depending on your preferred style of teaching. Her lectures were VERY fast-paced, you had a weekly quiz, a some weekly readings, and final papers, with extendable deadlines if needed. She doesn't believe in midterms/finals for history, which is nice. She wasn't a bad teacher, just not really a fit for me.
Really enjoyed this class. Professor Tsoukas is super sweet and easy going. Her lectures are very fast paced, so be ready to have to catch up after class. But other than that the assignments are easy and instructions are super clear.
The only problem I had was the amount of reading and writing, but other than that, she was great!
Love her! She was amazing and lectures are so fun and engaging-- at least in my opinion! There is a LOT of reading including a book, but the book is really good. I recommend!
