She is a great professor! It's very rare that the things she does are confusing. A great lecturer because she actually does problems in class, unlike some other Chem teachers. She fully explains what she does and she is always available for office hours where she is very helpful. I would recommend her. Do textbook problems for test practice.
Had her for discussion, it was AMAZING. Every question I had she answered and waited there and helped until I understood. Her and Ewa Stec are a power duo for Chem101.
She deserves more rates. She takes the class step by step and you get a good grasp of everything. Theres a worksheet to work through in every lecture and she goes over the problems w you. You have to memorize polyatomics and do conversions. HW/Sapling due every Thurs. Daily clickers. Quiz/tests on Friday weigh alot but do HW/discussion to practice
She's honestly an amazing professor. She makes the material easy to understand because she guides you along the process as she lectures. Very thoughtful and kind also. Just. Take. Her. Class. You won't regret it.
The teacher goes over problems in class so if you pay attention the homework, quizzes, and tests should not be every difficult. Even if this is a 101 class, study. If you don't open your notes, it will be hard to get an A in the class but you might pass with a B or an C. She also uploads notes and problems done in class which is always useful.
She is nice and fun.
She's good but with grades she's bad and she work with UIC GLOBAL she can't do anything because of them even though she's a professor her exams are tough it's difficult to pass her class
Her grading tough
The professor she's awsome but her grades are bad difficult to get a good grade with her
From an A to a B to a C in less than 3 weeks. I dropped harder than the American economy after September 11.
If you are looking for an easy Chem 101 teacher, Lianne is your best choice. She is great at teaching, provides great example problems, and actually works through the chemistry problems with you in class. I have struggled with Chemistry for a year now, and Lianne has made things so much simpler and easier to understand.
Too much exams and quizzes. They are all hard.
This professor is amazing. I had chem 101 with her and she helped me a lot. She is better than all the chemistry professors I have had. I also had an amazing T.A this semester and I feel like they worked hard and cared for students. She would sometimes give an extra point on the exams or quizzes if she made a math error. She is amazing.
I didn't understand chem in highschool nor when i took chem 121 as a freshmen at UIC. 5 years later i placed into chem 101 and now feel confident in chemistry. that sour taste in my mouth from chem 121 five years ago has now vanished. This fast paced 4 week summer course was organized very well and i highly recommend this course and professor.
Prof. Schroeder is great. She really cares that you do well and actually understand the material. I disagree with the reviews calling her a tough grader. She's very fair, and everything is laid out in the syllabus so you should know what to expect. Goes the extra mile to explain something if you don't get it. Go to lecture for clicker points.
hard grader
Shes a tough grader but she teaches really good. Theres homework every week. Its easy for your grade to drop but hard to bring it back up. Make sure you do all the work. Tests and quizzes are okay but are graded toughly.
Overall, Prof Schroeder is pretty good. It helps to read the textbook sections to understand what she is saying sometimes she can go a little fast in lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory but she does give clicker points which helps your grade a bit. Do the online homework and show up to lecture you will probably do pretty well on the tests.
She is a great teacher and will go over everything that will be on tests/quizzes. The manual is a big help and makes the lectures easier to follow. Never any surprises on the tests, but you'll definitely have to go to lecture if you want to do well.
Lianne is great! She goes through example problems and explains well in lecture. For this class, you need an access code for homework (comes with ebook), course manual, and a clickr for participation points. I had no experience in chem before so office hours were great, I got an A in the class. Final Grade is exam/quiz heavy. Do well on them.
I dont think I have ever had a better lecture professor than Dr. Schroeder. Within a 50 minute lecture she manages to make the content that we are supposed to learn very understandable and easy to make sense of. This is coming from a person who used to have absolutely terrible chemistry skills. If you get the chance, take her class.
Dr. Schroeder was a good professor, possibly the best for Chem 101. Her lectures were easy to understand, and didn't totally read off the powerpoints but rather explained in her own easy terminology. Exams/quizzes were EZ if you pay attention in class and do homework. I never had to see her outside of class if I had questions but she's accessible.
The tests wouldnt let you pass!
The best professor I have taken so far. She explained all the concepts in class in detail. She even gives extra credit if she makes a mistake in one of the practice problems. Tests were easy if you payed attention in class. She relies on lecture slides but she doesnt read straight off the slides, she instead summarized it in a couple of sentences.
great teacher, go to lectures they will help a ton!
Show up to Lectures, actually try on your homework, and you should be fine. It was an easy A, basic Chemistry concepts.
Do not take her unless you want to be constantly accused of cheating. She does not want to see her students prosper, only cares about catching students cheating.
Worst experience ever. Only cares about catching people cheat and posts all about it on her social media for others to comment. Lacks professionalism. Her quizzes are almost impossible to do well on because every question is worth 4-5 points (even if theyre multiple choice). Unbelievable amount of quizzes. Had to watch YouTube videos to understand
good option for chem 101 compared to other professors. Some say she cares more about catching students cheating but dont take into consideration that she clearly said to not use the internet for some equations because they give wrong formulas and they still did&got caught. Weekly homework/lecture quizzes. Big quizzes every two weeks. Final/Midterm
By far the worst professor at UIC. Especially if you are newer to Chem concepts, do not take her. She doesn't care about you/your grade. Shortened test times because other students were cheating, so she punished all of us. Literally told me it was "the only fair way". Condescending, unsympathetic professor. Class is a waste of time and $$$.
Dr. S Is amazing! the way chem 122 is tight at UIC is not her fault. She does her best to help every student and even encourages students who are struggling. Not an easy A or B. However she was amazing at her job.
Literally would not pick another teacher for Chemistry! I had her for chem 101 and chem 122 and she's just amazing! I hate chemistry and I genuinely do not understand it but she makes it easy to understand if you do the work & study!!! such a shame she doesn't teach general chem 2 otherwise I would pick her in a heartbeat!
Overall my learning experience with Dr. Schroeder was really good, she's really good at explaining the lessons so as long as you pay attention to the lectures and reinforce what you've learnt by doing the homework and discussion worksheets you'll definitely do good.
Prof. S is great on the outside, seems super friendly but is a stickler with cheating and grading, a little to the point where it seems like she's more concerned who's cheating. I felt like even though I was going to office hours/tutoring, I was gaining barely any knowledge from the class because I was constantly so anxious.
Professor Schroeder is a solid choice for CHEM101 out of all the other professors IMO. Her lectures are easy to understand considering I did poorly in CHEM back in HS. Make sure to participate in the discussions and answer the clicker questions during her lectures and I'm sure you should do fine on the tests. JUST DON'T CHEAT!
Dr. Schroeder is a great professor. She gives good lectures and will slow down and go over material again if you ask her to, making comprehension and notetaking easier. You will succeed if you review material and ask for help. Yes, she catches students out on cheating. Just don't cheat. If you have to cheat for Chem 101, maybe STEM isn't for you.
Alright compared to other chem teachers in the department. Sometimes comes off as rude when you ask her a question and blames you for not knowing certain things. She honestly has no patience when you ask things during class. Compared to my friend's chem prof, she makes her slides very wordy and difficult for no reason.
Dr. S is a tough prof but is very helpful if you put the effort in. She holds pre-exam tutoring sessions that you should definitely go to. Take good notes during lectures and do your homework to make up for possible bad test grade.
Worst class I had to ever take. Miss one class and you can never seem to catch up again, she is super rude when it comes to questions or being asked to slow down. She crams so much into one lecture, I eventually had to get a W for her class.
Great professor! I agree she is strict about exams but the material isn't too bad considering this is an intro class. Her lectures and powerpoints were extremely helpful for me, she thoroughly explains the material and encourages participation. Watch/pay attention to all the lectures (she recorded them), practice the problems, and you're good!
Was not too big a fan of this professor. She was hard to follow and went through things fast. She didn't like people to ask questions while she was talking. Very few pause points in lectures and not a very welcoming attitude. Very rushed.
Not the worst, not the best. Moves very quickly in class and lectures are very very powerpointy. If you don't like that style of teaching then she's not for you. You will have to work a lot outside of class. I rewatch a lot of the lectures before tests due to the pace. Make sure to pay attention from the get go because concepts build on each other
Personally CHEM122, is not completely horrible. The lecture questions are super important for the exam, I heavily recommend redoing all the lecture questions when it comes to the exam and understand them conceptually! Schroeder does go fast through the lectures so I would have to try to reunderstand/reteach myself the lectures
Schroeder goes extremely fast in her lectures and gets mad if students have questions. There are no reviews before tests in class and if there are it's the last 10 minutes of class before the test. You have to do a LOT of your own studying and teaching and she expects you to set aside at least 6-8 hours per week just for her class to study.
This is my second time taking this class just to fail with a D(again!). There's no curves on any exams(which sucks) and the exams basically determines your whole grade. Homework is worth very little so it won't really help your grade. I just saw my final grade for this class and this is my second time taking this class just to fail with a D.
She was so rushed in lectures and doesn't have pre-exam review session. It's very to catch up with class materials.
she's amazing y'all are just haters it's not her fault lol that chem is very test based
She's the best Chem 101 professor. She answers all your questions and even runs up the lecture hall if you have a question or if you want her to check your work!
She speeds through lectures, doesn't use class time to have a review day before an exam, and assigns homework that will take you at least 2 hours every weekend just for it to barely count towards your grade. You'll spend a majority of your time trying to teach YOURSELF the materials of this class rather than learning from her.
Very good professor with her lectures being clear and will slow down if needed. She answers questions when needed along with lenient grading
The professor's lectures do move quickly, however, she posts all lecture material after class. She is very easy to understand, and she is completely willing to help students if necessary. The homework is pretty easy, and it does not have a heavy weight on your grade. All you have to do to perform well in the class is attend lectures and do homework
Lectures can go really fast because of the amount of content that needed to be covered, but Dr. Schroeder tried her best to help us catch up with everything. Her drop-in hours are great and she always answers questions. There's a textbook, she says that it's mandatory reading but honestly I got all the information I needed from the lecture slides.
She would speed through the lectures so early and could care less if students understand the material or not. The stuff on the lecture slides is not even in the test. It is hard to go for tutoring since she has very few office hours available. Do not take her I got a A/B in high school chemistry and had to withdraw this class with a 67 percent
Very test-heavy class. You're not graded on much else. Her lectures were okay, but I found myself comparing the information to the textbook a lot, and they did not match up. I just used the textbook to pass.
Professor Schroeder was very knowledgeable and made me feel welcomed into UIC. She always gave us dates and reminders for upcoming test/homework and made the class enjoyable. While most of the points are from tests, the tests are generally easy considering you come to class and do the work. This class is really what you put into you get out.
She flies through the work. We don't do well on exams and she blames us even with the class average being a 53. Not very likeable in class to be honest. Will NOT go back on slides during lecture or truly spend time clarifying stuff because there is "no time" (not true). Certain questions = a snarcy response for no reason. Won't take her again :)
Exams are worth so much and there is almost no review. Her explanations are boring and she drones on basically reading off the slides. She's helpful and encouraging if you have a question or don't understand something. The exams get harder and you have to teach yourself the material. The homework is long and the method is different than in class.
This class is very test heavy (4 tests + final... none dropped), a big majority of the grade is from tests. HW doesn't help out much, she doesn't give extra credit, and her lectures are mostly just read off slides, lectures aren't recorded either, just posted slides. Curve is huge tho, I was 1% away from a B, no rounding lol
Dr. Schroeder speeds through lecture slides and expects everyone to catch on after the first or second go around then throws an iClicker at you. Be prepared to teach yourself everything. I only attended lectures for attendance because paying attention did not benefit me but confuse me even more. Exam averages didn't exceed a D+ for a reason.
She is a really decent professor, I think she's the best out of all of the Chem101 professors in UIC. When she assigns. work, it's consistent. A lot of ALEKS, lectures are important, and discussion classes are good to attend if you're having trouble. She prepares you well, it's mostly time management when it comes to studying for exam.
People say she's really bad and whatever, but shes not THAT bad. Yes, the lectures can go pretty fast but she uploads completed ones after class, so you could just look back at them. The class isn't too bad as long as you pay attention to lectures and visit the mslc if you need it. honestly though its college.....no one said its gonna be easy.
Dr. Schroeder is nice, She has everything prepared and of course, chemistry is not something you can crammed in a night before the exam so make sure that you are spending your time studying from the beginning of the semester. Curve grade will depend on the average of the class. Extra credits are given during the semester.
ALEKS was the main way you learn the material. Make sure you go to lectures and complete IClickers since they are part of your grade. So many tests, usually every 3 weeks or so, and only gives 1 day of review for each test. No quizzes, just complete pre discussion questions for discussion credit. She's somewhat helpful after class in MSLC.
Lecture heavy. Mainly just reads off slides and expects you to know information already. Curve is crazy but doesn't benefit students who actually tried in the class. Would only take if no other professors are left.
Main key to succes in this class is to do the Aleks and re-do pre-discussion worksheets until you have the material down. This class requires time and effort so make sure to be studying at least a week before the exam to cover all the content. If you have any questions go to the MSLC, they helped me a lot throughout the semester. Good class.
I loved her lectures. I feel like she broke chemistry down up and allowed me to really understand the concept. Chemistry in itself is such a difficult subject, but Dr. Schroeder is an excellent professor to teach this especially if it's chem 101. I wish she was teaching Chem 122/123 so I could take her again. She's kinda rude when you talk fyi too.
She is very knowledgable but she's not fit for teaching, especially freshman. That's what happens in a research university. You have professors that aren't there for the students. They're caught up in writing their own research and thesis. Now I understand why students coming from community colleges feel more supported by their professors.
Schroeder is an amazing professor. Her class is very engaging. Her slides were really organized and helpful. She really cares about helping her students. She has office hours often and they are very helpful. Keep track of the slides and take notes during class and do practice problems in the textbook.
ALEKS teaches you more than she ever will. Do go to lectures and complete IClickers because they are part of your grade. Exams are a good portion of your overall grade. Respect her wishes and don't talk to your peers while she's talking. She will say something like "I will wait" so that people can stop talking. She drinks mountain dew every day.
She is a great teacher. I previously had issues with learning chemistry but in her class, it was so easy. Her lectures are very organized and have a great pace. As long as you listen to the in class lectures and do all the practice/hw on aleks, you should be good. I was able to get 100% on multiple tests when in high school I'd get 70's.
When I took this class, I couldn't focus for the life of me. She's a nice professor but I can't understand the things she was teaching. I learned more in Professor Stec's lecture than this one. She's not bad but I guess it's based off preference.
terrribleeeee, i would skip her unless you have no choice. i dread everyday I have class. exams worth so much, flunk one time or do bad and game over. this class has a bad average exam score, stayyy awayyyyy. this class is worse than calculus I, doing better in that class than CHEM 101😂 ICLICKer ruins ur whole grade.
She's a great professor. She explains things very thoroughly and provides visuals during her lectures. Homework is weekly and on ALEKS (you have to pay for it). Review her slides after class because she can sometimes gloss over important material since she wants to cover other bigger topics. Heavy on the Iclickers, which is understandable.
I hate chem, but her teaching style was very helpful. Her use of clickers forces you to apply what you just learned (if you don't read the online textbook (i didn't)), so that kinda sucked. For the most part, the work was manageable. You have Aleks lessons & hw weekly, which count for a few points. The tests make up the majority of your grade, tho
Awesome professor. She goes through slides a little fast but the pace was just right for me. She is very well spoken and is very clear throughout her lectures. Overall an easy and fun class.
I had her as a co-teacher for NATS 106 alongside Michael Muller. She is ok. She is very passive-aggressive...and does not seem happy when asked questions. She gives actual scary stares at people during lectures. Her lecture slides are honestly confusing. She does not explain things well and speeds through slides. Don't really like her, but not bad.
Dr. Schroeder's lectures can get boring and it's difficult at most times to stay focused on her teaching, there's also just a lot of material in this class so you're going to have to do a decent amount of work outside of class to keep up. The exams are also designed to trip you up and the chem department grades tough, so you really have to focus.
Very bad class. This professor just expects you to understand everything no matter what. She is not understanding to personal matters. And her tests are insanely difficult, the classe's average scores were always around 50%. Grading criteria is not clear at all.
Hard class and a bad professor. Every time we took a test, the class average was around a 50% because the tests were insanely hard and she just expected you to know everything she threw up on the board during lectures. Unclear grading criteria and TAs were terrible, I could barely understand what they were saying.
Great prof
I don't understand why people giving her bad reviews. She was one of my favorite professors of all time. She was really clear with lectures, homeworks. She made her lectures very interesting and easy to cope with. However, her class required lots of homework done within a span of one week. Unfortunately, tests are heavy, but ALEKS helps a lot!
Schroeder is great. She helped me when the chemistry department couldn't on an issue.During her lectures she can go quickly, the slides are posted and you can refer back. You have to buy Aleks. I think that if you do Aleks without help and do the review problems on Aleks for each chapter in the etextbook, then you'll do good in class.
Schroeder is more on the chill side. Usually treats us with respect but does get annoyed whenever people talk over her. Yes, her lectures are long and does go through them quickly. But does give you the slides to download in advance. I will agree that the amount of work is exhausting on Aleks, but they do a good job of making you learn more.
She is the WORST. Quiz and exam averages are AWFUL like 50%-60% range and she refuses to believe that it is her fault that everyone is doing bad. She does not explain the material in a way that is easy to understand. She also formats questions different on exams than what is learned in class. Aleks is your best friend. DO NOT TAKE. SAVE YOURSELF
Chem is hard. She broke it down amazing for us, she went through lectures quickly and would even finish class early some times. Never shoved lectures at you, she was fun. Didn't expect you to learn everything on the 1st try. She didn't like when people spoke over her. But she was really nice and very helpful. I recommend her A LOT.
There were quite a bit of things to do every week for this class but it was doable. The content can be hard at times but if you dedicate time to it you'll do well. She genuinely wants you to learn and grow as a student.
Schroeder can be passive aggressive and dismissive towards struggling students. It can be hard to connect with her as a student and feel comfortable asking questions. When students ask her questions, sometimes she'd respond in a pretty condescending way rather than supportive---which can be very discouraging.
Be prepared to study quite a bit for this course; lots of things to study and remember. Exams fit perfectly with in-class assignments, and lectures are interesting.
It really takes time to warm up to her. If you show up to the MSLC and prove that you are trying, she WILL find ways to help you. Lectures are very important to pay attention to, or else you will be confused. Most grades come from ALEKS, so make sure those are always done. Exams are fairly hard, but if you study, I promise you will be okay.
Awesome Love it
I loved Lianne Schroeder and this class so much. I hated chemistry in high school but I found out I love chemistry overall through this class. The assignments and quizzes set you up for success. The lectures can move fast but if you pay attention for the 50 minutes, finish the online assignments, and study, you will receive a good grade.
I took this class in Spring 2025, and it was extremely draining. Despite my effort, I never missed class and went to office hours, but it was never enough. The TA had no chemistry background, and Professor Schroeder was unfair, helping only certain students during exams. Save yourself the stress and choose a different professor.
normal class not as hard as people make it out to be just take notes
During her lectures she writes down things on the slides and does the problems with us which helps a lot because it gives a visual. Before exams and quizzes she gives us a topic guide to study and it's very accurate, she's honestly the best Chem 101 teacher.
she writes on the lecture slides to help guide us to understand the material better and I think it really helps. for word problems, she goes through it step by step. occasionally she would walk around the classroom to answer questions when she gives us time to work on word problems. she's overall really great iclicker is used btw
Schroeder is a very good professor. I don't understand why she is rated so low. You can tell she cares, and her lecture are easy to follow. I will say sometimes she is a bit passive aggressive, but it was deserved. If you have to take CHEM101 she is 100% the best option.
I used to hope someone would mug me while walking to class so I wouldn't have to go, but that's just because I'm overdramatic. She does give you all the resources you need to pass; you just have to study. 100% prefer her compared to the other Chem 101 profs.
I feel this class is too overwhelming for what is being taught. The topics themselves aren't difficult, however the professor adds in steps that are unecessary and just confuse you. It feels as if the way the class is formatted and the way she teaches you, like you're a child. Be prepared to take out an unecessary amount of time for this class.
Absolutely loved my time in her class. She's an amazing person who cares about her students' understanding. She gives you everything you need to succeed through the slides she uses to teach. Be sure to attend the lectures, as iClickers will be available for participation points.
