he's gonna make u drop hons econ
knows his sh*t but can't convey it - very difficult unless you do much extra reading and excercises; he tries hard, but just trying doesnt help
He is a nice guy, but he is a horrible teacher. He just cannot explain his material, he is the living proof that university prof should definitely get some education or pedagogical classes!! If you have him......YOU are SCREWED!
dame it!!!!!
worst teacher I've ever had! I tried to explain my question to him for 20 minutes the day before an exam and I gave up! He doesn't speak or understand English!!! AVOID HIM!!!
*sigh* he just rambles on in broken english for a few minutes, and then says "all clear?", at which point the room remains silent. Then he does it again. Never really understood a word he said, and he doesn't really prepare you for the exa
still recuperating... piece of advice: go to tutorials and do the problem sets again and again and again until you either know them by heart or give up hons altogether
Stay away...he cannot teach, impossible to understand, very unhelpful, he'll make you re-think honors
Oh my god: First he seemed nice, but his teaching is terrible and only his English is worse than that! Ok, Game Theory is a hard topic and needs lot of preparation, but this teacher makes it even harder. Avoid this course, it will ruin your GPA!!
When this guy explains NE,SPE,S.D.,W.D. it all sounds the same. Better stay at home, buy a good textbook - not the one he recommends -, and learn a lot. Dude, his english is worse than mine...
Guess what? Game theory is hard. Deal with it. Poor Lincun had to put up with a class of people who couldn't do simple calculus. It's not his fault if McGill lets unqualified students into its Econ grad program.
"Can you hear me? Can you hear me? So we will start!" So nice souvenirs! He's so bad, it's incredible! Good luck Honours student! :) GO TO THE TUTORIAL SESSION!!!! It's the only way to pass that class
i liked this prof, he may have a slight accent but so do most profs. if you go visit him during office hours he's really helpful, and he doesn't give exams beyond the expected. for such a difficult subject this was a really good course.
In spite of people complaining, those who put in the effort understood the subject and did well. It's not a hard class and it's not a bad teacher, but laziness can me it seem so.
fine..he has problems communicating and is not the most entertaining guy. But he is very helpful. See him in his office and he'll do anything to help you. Also, game theory is not for paperweight economists. If you want an easy A, then don't take it. Favorite line: "All clear?"
His English is somewhat hard to understand. If you can get around that, though, his course is a joy to take.
This guy is great. He does have an accent but he's kind, funny and he knows his stuff. If you ask him to repeat he'll do it as many times as you need. After having read the comments on this site I was actually scared, but he turned out to be a very pleasant surprise!
He is so nice a professor, he can help you with all kinds of questions in this subject. It is not an easy course, you can not get an easy A if you dont work hard, though he explains very clear.
he was good at the beginning, but then... the midterm avg was a 60, and since then, he became unclear, confusing, and boring. he made the entire course into one topic, leaving us with doubts as to what is what. final was bad... my good experience with greenberg was overriden by the ominous 2nd term.
Xue is a kind guy. He is open to providing help, even outside his office hours. His accent is a problem however, and as you move futher towards the end of the course, well that's when the sh*t hits the fan..Very theoretical Prof, and TAs weren't up to par.
didnt learn anything...
an OK prof. sometimes confusing, but clear overall. Nice and helpful during office hours. Plus, he REALLY curves a lot for both midterms and finals!
Here is another example of a McGill Prof who was hired for his research value. He is very unclear, speaks English very poorly. He does a feeble job of explaining concepts. All examples during lecture are theoretical, making it hard to do problem sets when we must apply the theory. The text was a poor choice. TA's are WORTHLESS! Very bad prof.
He is very intelligent.
tough course. But learn a lot, and he is very nice and helpful
Prof Xue had to take over the second semester with most of us shellshocked from the first term. With Prof Greenberg sick most of the time, I bombed the first term. Xue gave me a fighting chance to pass the course with his humour and willingness to go over things. I barely passed but I credit my survival in this hard as hell honours course to him!
Okay, nice guy, pretty bad english, unable to bridge the gap between undergrads and Phd-level analysis. Basically, you're on your own. good luck.
too hard
Without a doubt, the worst teacher in the history of McGill. Has the strongest accent in the world and cannot be less clear in his lectures. He WILL BE OUT TO GET YOU on every question on the exams. Dropout rate after the first year is about 50%. Hates his students and laughs at them instead of helping them. Never answers questions in a nice way...
Worst professor in the history of teaching. Plain and Simple. DO NOT TAKE THE HONOURS PROGRAM! EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU'RE SMART ENOUGH!
Xue is a very friendly and cheerful guy. His accent does get in the way of class sometimes, but he's a fair grader and his exams are mostly math based, rather than theory. He's a sweet man who knows what he's talking about. Be sure to take him for game theory.
The class is very dull, but if you like game theory, his classes are fine. Midterm was hard. Chooses materials that wasn't "expected". Very helpful though. GO to his office hours and everything will click. No matter how many times you need him to explain it he will do it. Eventually, you'll click too. A very fair final. Good Prof overall
Licun is so nice and funny. Do the problem sets over and over again . Make sure you know how to do the problem sets!!!
He's a great professor and will really help you if you go to his office hours. Midterms and Finals were fair, and an A is obtainable as long as you spend a lot of time on his problem sets.
such a nice prof, always smile, make some friendly jokes, and u will be fine if u pay enough attention to his problem sets.
terrible, just terrible
His explanations are very bad. His slides are useless. Everything is very general, but the problem sets are all application questions. Kind of hard see the application when the theory is so general. Useless. Used the textbook and understood WAY more with it than with him.
Nice guy, kinda boring but tries to explain things as best he can. Pretty willing to help if you ask. Doesn't mess around with his exams, if you get the material and can do the problem sets, you'll be fine.
Terrible explanations. Language Barrier
Extremely difficult class, microeconomics is a very dry subject. The professor's reasoning is very hard to follow. Problem sets are way harder than the theory taught in class. Must be 100% dedicated to take honors econ. This year the midterm was fair, but the final insanely difficult. He is fairly helpful during office hours.
ECON250D1 requires a basic understanding of many concepts taught in MATH222 (Calc 3) including partial derivatives, lagrangian functions, differentiation with indirect dependencies, and constrained/unconstrained optimization problems. I highly suggest future ECON250 students get the Perloff book, and teach yourself the course through the book.
There is a language barrier that will take time for you to get over. His slides weren't as helpful as the textbooks. You might need both depending on what topic you are doing. The classes a lot clearer if you have taken MATH 222, which isn't even a co-requisite for the course. The final was brutal. Expect to put in a lot of work and time
Really bad teaching of elementary principles. I would have loved it if I didn't have to re-do everything by myself. The assignments are way harder than what we see in class (for those who go to class because we all got that it was not worth it) but useful.
Prof. Xue is a really nice person, but not a good lecturer. He does not adequately explain the material, which is very difficult. He writes the problem sets himself and they clearly correlate to the material on the midterm and final exam. If you have an extremely strong math/Calculus background you will do well, if not, I do not recommend.
Licun's a great prof. His accent is heavy, but if you focus in class, you'll learn to understand him. Hated him at first but grew to love him. His problem sets are the hardest thing ever, but they prepare you really well for exams. The course is the hardest in the major, but Licun makes you work so you actually LEARN. That's why we're in university
Basically a terrible lecturer, he has a very heavy accent which can make him difficult to understand especially in a large class while using a mic. The problem sets are tough, but you're only marked on doing them rather than your answers. If you study the problem sets and sample midterms and finals you can do very well in this class.
After taking second-semester courses, I gave him a 5.... His exams are absolutely predictable just be sure you can handle all the problem sets and past finals.. (You can find them all easily on coursehero) Our class average was around 80- pretty high compare to ECON257.....
ECON 250D (and all the other Honours courses) is hard, Licun Xue has a thick Chinese but I have rarely seen anyone as nice as him! Always a smile, very caring and worried about you understanding the material and his lecture. He will stay more than one hour after class to explain the material if it was unclear.
Licun is such a nice guy and wants his students to do well.
He insane of the most kindest guy I have ever met. He tries so hard to make sure you understand the material. However, his accent is too thick even for a Chinese student but he talks slowly enough so that helps. The course material is challenging but the problem sets and lectures are highly connected to the exams.
Really kind and solid prof. Problem sets definitely reflect midterm and final difficulty.
Took him for two Hon. micro courses - by far the best econ prof. VERY clear and simple explanations of hard concepts, the accent people talk about - you get used to it after 2 lectures, and with recorded classes it makes it very easy to re-listen and understand. Very down to earth (opposite to some other hon. profs), cares for everyone to do well
Strongly based on the textbook for the course but he helpfully extracts the key parts from each chapter and presents them clearly in his slideshows. He is a bit hard to understand, so listening to his lectures isn't the most important part so focus on the slides. Do all the exercises in the textbook study plan; they're basically the exam questions.
His lectures are mostly based on the textbook, so attendance is not mandatory as long as you read it. His slides are helpful in a way that it summarizes the important concepts. His exams are also very reasonable, but he does not give you any practice exams or problems before the exam.
Professor Licun is very caring and sweet. He is obviously smart but is often confusing in explaining the math proofs for different econ problems I think he's unaware that all econ 250 students don't know partial derivs or lagrange opt. which are calc 3 topics. He also overlooks theory in favor of math proofs. Accessible, smart guy but confusing.
Very nice, decent enough lectures, answers questions in a clear way, tests not too hard and fairly similar to either the assignments or past exams so you know exactly what to expect when you go in to it. Not the most enthusiastic/inspirational lectures though, mostly based off the book/slides but overall not too bad. A solid 7/10.
I just read the book and did the Pearson exercises for this class. Not a bad teacher at all, but his lecturing style may not be for you (as it was not for me). If you regularly study and revise (1 to 1.5 hrs per week), you won't need to cram for exams and you easily come out with a very high grade.
The lectures were very boring, and uninformative and it was obvious that he's used to teaching more advanced econ classes. The examples he gave were very hard to follow and he tried to bring in math that wasn't necessary to the class. Basically taught myself with the textbook.
His lectures are a bit boring and dry, but he is trying his best. Nice guy too. Exams are super fair. Just do the problem sets over and over again and an A will come your way.
One of the nicest teachers in the ECON department, and he isn't afraid to make his class more flexible so that students have more ease with the math-heavy materia. Because of this, however, the structure of his classes and his assignments may not be fully concise, which may lead to some confusion along the road.
this was the hardest class i've ever taken at mcgill. I have never had to teach myself more than for this class. It honestly makes me frustrated that I have to pay for this course when I am teaching myself the course material. The lectures are confusing and move quite fast.
Prof. Xue is a really nice guy, however his lectures are disorganized and hard to follow. Grade is dependant on midterm and exams. Class was a waste of time which is extremely frustrating when you are paying to attend. My best advice is to skip class and study from the textbook, because realistically you're not gonna get much from the lectures.
Econ professor be good at teaching Econ challenge (level impossible)
he is a rather nice teacher but do not bother going to class as his lectures are impossible to follow and to understand. your best chance of doing well is by teaching yourself through the textbook and slides. there is a lot of material. you are also graded on very few assignments (only one midterm worth 30% and one final worth 70%).
Very nice professor, he tried his best to make econ interesting, but unfortunately, there's only so much he can do. Recommend skipping class and studying on your own, as lectures move slowly--he tends to give lots of worked examples in class, which is helpful if you don't understand the formulas.
Prof. Xue seems super nice, but his classes are incomprehensible even for someone who had done microeconomics before. Like others have said, better to just skip class and learn from the textbook. Grade is only 2 assignments (30%, 70%), all multiple choice which is insane! Would not recommend if this is your first economics class...
Dr. Xue made this class amazing. He taught to the classes ability, gave real world examples, always answered questions, and conveyed the information in an interesting way. I hope he is teaching Econ 250 next year!
Prof. Xue is a nice guy, but incredibly dry and seemingly uninterested in teaching at this level. His lectures were often repetitive because he didn't understand questions and would repeat his slides instead of answering anything. Course was also only graded on midterm (30%) and Final (70%), but Xue's tests were easier than other section of 208.
Prof Xue is a very nice person but NOT a good professor. His mycourses was confusing and no one went to class bc when you did you left more confused than when you walked in. The class content isn't difficult, but you do have to learn by yourself with the textbook.
He is very kind and gives fair exams. Lectures can be a bit dry, but otherwise no complaints.
Licun is a very kind guy, but his lectures were incredibly repetitive and unorganized, and I also found his accent hard to understand at times. However, the course was very easy to learn on my own from the textbook. I feel bad for him, he made a lot of good dad jokes but no one appreciated it or went to lectures.
Nice guy but I could not understand him at all. No point in going to the lectures- he made it more confusing as he wouldn't label axis and started putting calculus with logarithms on the board (even though thats not part of the course). I taught myself EVERYTHING and probably would've failed if I didn't have wizprep. Get ready to sweat for finals.
You will end up teaching yourself this course. Beware there are only 2 assessments: the 70% exam and the 30% midterm. It's possible to do well, you just need to be very organized and have great initiative skills.
Sweetest guy ever, tries so hard to make class funny and interesting. However, I learnt most of the subject matter straight from the amazing textbook and stopped going to class. Lecture style can put you to sleep. Goes very slow when covering subject matter.
Boring dont attend class he is slow but the class is ez
I could compliment his personality, but that really doesn't matter if he can't teach. He mumbles and whispers for 2 hours while using a weirdly structured and unrefined PowerPoint. I will bet my entire savings that you will mostly learn the course through the textbook he briefly mentions at the start of the semester. Just don't go to class.
Unfortunately I could barely understand what he was saying most of the time and had to resort to a tutor. The tests were on material we covered but multiple choice heavy, graded on two things. Would not recommend
If you can complete and understand practice exams and assignments (prior to the midterm and final), you're set for a decent grade.
Graded only by the midterm (30%) and final (70%). Lectures were boring , and taught with his own powerpoint slides which he annotes with graphs and doesn't bother to label any axis. Do not take as an elective if that is what you are considering.
real economist prof... meaning he knows how to solve the help minimization problem: giving the least amount of help to students while keeping an average near 60(it was 50-55 and he curved up for the midterm)
Definitely not the best lecturer, as they were painfully slow, boring, and difficult to understand. Prof kinda spoke in riddles and got sidetracked very easily. Homeworks were difficult, but they were similar to and good preparation for the exams. He also curved the exams and gave additional practice questions beforehand. Overall, pretty decent.
Professor Xue is very knowledgeable about the content, but it is often difficult for him to "dumb it down" for students who do not understand his initial explanations. His lectures are kind of dry, but good for anyone interested in theory. You can re-teach yourself the whole sem in like 20 hrs before exams. Problem sets look exactly like exams.
Professor Xue had a way of taking simple concepts and making them more difficult to understand. Besides this, he does care about his students and tries to explain the material as best he can. The lectures, however, are difficult to pay attention to. I got a good enough grade just attending the lectures and reading the textbook while he yapped away.
Very unorganized lectures. This prof is all over the place. He's extremely intelligent and knows his material well, but the way he lectures makes it so confusing. Relying on lectures will make the course harder for you, it definitely did for me.
Decent prof. Goes very quickly on the mathematical part of the course and very (sometimes comically) slowly on the theoretical. Does explain the material decently and doesn't mark assignments. Also curves generously.
Great prof I love him
had his micro in 2017.his Chinese accent was strong and some explanations weren't clear. But he was one of those professors who actually cared. Like, he'd answer emails in time, and if students needed help, he'd stay late after office hours without making a big deal about it. If you just put in the work on assignments, you could get solid grades.
Awful experience, lecture slides are incoherent and incomprehensible.
