most of studentsdrop.very bad teacher can't understand her accent.Took this class over with another teacher and i got an A. the material was very easy but when i took it with her she made it extremely hard.dont take because you'll probably get low grade
Horrible accent, hard homework, hard tests. But, attendance doesnt really count. Try to get the final project from someone and she wont know the difference. At the end seems understanding with the grades.
How is sheeee?
Unbelievably fantastic professor. I'll take her other class next semester.
I was terrified by the two comments dated on 8/29/03 and 10/9/03 in the beginning of the semester. Glad that I didn't follow their comments to drop the course because what they said were not true. She is a good professor, knowledgable and respectful.
VERY NICE LADY, HER ACCENT IS HARD TO UNDERSTAND BUT AFTER 2 WEEKS YOU WILL GET USE TO. YOU DON'T NEED A BOOK. SHE POSTS MATERIAL ON THE BLACKBOARD AND HOMEWORK IS IN CLASS. TAKE HER AND YOU WILL HAVE A NICE TIME. VERY HELPFULL!
My friend got an A from another professor, but when I asked him to answer my HW problems, he didn't know how to do it. Other professors may make you feel the material is easy because they just give you a superficial knowledge of the subject. She is not afraid to teach you the subject thoroughly.
This course is all about mathematical models. If you don't have a good math background, you may think the material is hard. However, she explains things well. If you practice the homework and review problems, you'll have no problem in getting a good grade.
Dr. Hsu is an excellent professor. She is also very helpful in explaining concepts during office hours or after class.
Professor Hsu is great. She is extremely willing to help her students. I'm taking another class from her next semester and I can't wait.
This is for ya'll who put the smily lil' face. What the hell are you guys thinking about? She ain't nice, she ain't understanding, she just straight mean... as for her accent, damn... I don't understand anything she says, I am not exaggerating. Overall, run as far away as you can from this prof.
Although she is tough, she is a very good professor.
Professor Hsu would be an excellent professor if you could understand what she is saying. She tries to explain the concepts, but I found this class very difficult because I could not understand a word she was trying to say.
She is a nice person. But her accent is so hard to understand. I also think that she is very unfair with her exams. I would recommend that you attend every class and sit up front to get every word. She lectures but doesn't teach. You will be teaching yourself in this class. Study hard!!! That's all I can say.
She is a good professor. I enjoyed her teaching and I learned a lot from this course. She is fair in grading.
She is my favorite professor at Baruch College. If you take her course, you'll have a good background for other advanced courses.
dont be a dumbass like me and take her for both of these classes. you will need corrective surgery after straining your ears so much. i found her useless as a teacher and pretty much taught myself from the book. try to take someone else for 3500 especially becuase you will need to be great in that class if u plan to be a OM major.
She is a very nice professor and willing to help students. You can expect to learn a lot from her class.
I Have been at Baruch College for three years, so far she is the best professor.
Too much work, gives case studies and hw, exams are easier. Teaching style - either you swim or drown. Grading is ok, but not much of a curve.
At first I worried because of the comments i read, but i think she is a good professor and her class was actually fun.
If you want a teacher who is going to hand u the answers to a problem then dont take her.Professor Hsu is the type of teacher who tries very hard to teach the concept of every problem. She is one of the best professors I have ever had despite her heavy accent. Her tests are difficult if u dont do the HW or if u dont understand the concepts.
People who gave smilies are living in a different universe than I am, and I LIKE MATH CLASSES Reads powerpoint out loud in a heavy accent that's hard to understand, even for native English speakers. Introduces ta topic but doesn't really teach it. You have to study alot to learn the material. Take Mgt 9500 first if you can, it will really help.
While she's very qualified in the subject area, she should not be teaching graduate courses, or at all. Her comm skills are very poor and her accent is nearly impossible to understand. Also, her teaching method is basicly reading slides and she refuses to change it. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. JUST READ THE BOOK AND YOU WILL LEARN MORE.
I took both MGT 3500 & MGT 3710 with her, and I think she is the best.
I think she explained the concepts well. I studied her lecture notes, did the homework assignments, and I got an A on both exams.
Worst professor ever!!Shame for Baruch!! It is a pure waste of money! she might know a lot but can definetely NOT teach..It looks like she doesn't want us to know too..absolutely arrogant and unrespectful too! Got an A, but all I know is what I learnt by myself and what all classmates helped each other learning! DO NOT TAKE HER!
I took both 3500 & 3710 with her. I think she is very organized and very helpful. Whenever I had problems, I wnet to her office and she would help me out.
The book is useless. She doesn't use it. She only lectured about 6 times during the semester but it's hard to understand what she says. The rest of the semester was taught by the rest of the students doing a bunch of the homework questions on the board. Midterm, Final, Case studies, group work, homework questions.
She is the best.
The very WORST!!!!!bEWARE:DO NOT TAKE HER!WASTE OF MONEY, TONS OF ARROGANCE..SHE JUST DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW/LEARN..horrible..still painful experience...(2 semesters ago)
Dr Hsu is a tough but good teacher. You must be able to work things out for yourself (think&work). Her in class work and group projects (tough) are excellent prep for the exams. Be prepared to work hard and study, but an A is definitely doable ( I got one). I really learned the material. Her accent is tough, but you get used to it after a while.
The comments made on 5/1/07 are irrelevant. Prof. Hsu has never taught MGT 3730. I took both MGT 3500 & MGT 3710 with her. If she teaches MGT 3730, I'll more than happy to take the course with her.
You learn a lot in her class if you do the homework everyday. She goes over it and you get to ask lots of questions. Her notes are great, powerpoint can be a little boring, and she is a tough grader. For most mistakes she takes 10 points off straight away on tests. Her class is very structured, and attendance is taken.
Speaks with heavy Chinese accent. Difficult to understand at times. So bad, it's almost funny. Knows what she's doing, but has trouble conveying it.
Pretty easy class if you're mathematically inclined. Her difficult accent wouldn't be so bad if she'd gotten out of her chair once in a while to write on the board. I usually left class clueless and learned the material on my own by studying her handouts.
She is very good.
A very challenging course. So far it is the best for the courses I have taken at Baruch.
Hsu is one of the best professors in Baruch. You must work to meet her high standards either through her lecture or the book. Her strict style makes the class a bit painful to sit through, but forces you to learn the material because she doesn't come off as an easy professor. She is a fair grader and the class learns as a team.
A very organized course.
She is pretty good.
I am not sure why people say she is the best! She explains once the problem, and then just assigns homework. In one of the classes, she wasted 5 sessions on doing HW! nothing new! just HW! and since the class did not understand it,we had the same homework day after day. She makes a fairly easy topic, really hard to follow specially with her accent!
Doing the homework assignments not only help me understand the course material better, but also improve my oral communucation skills.
A very challenging class. I enjoy it a lot
Learned nothing by going to her class. I've had some waste-of-time classes at baruch, but this one tops them all. Barely lectures, wastes most time by having students do the homework (isn't it meant for home?!). Although easy, I hated wasting class time.
I took both MGT 3500 and MGT 3710 with her. I have learned more than my friends in other classes.
Case studies are challenging, homework assignments are helpful. This course really improved my quantitative skills.
She never gets up to actually teach - she sits in front of the PC and reads off her slides in heavy chinese accent. I had high hopes of obtaining some practical knowledge for my professional activities. Very disappointed and feel nothing but regret. Avoid at all cost.
Although the course is not easy, she is the only professor that I have actually learned something from at Baruch college.
The fact is she is a good professor; but on the other hand the real problem is SHE DOES NOT HAVE A GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH!!! THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM AS THESE CLASSES ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS COURSE. I would not recommend that student take her if they have alternative to her. Good luck!!!!!
I thought this class was very interesting and I learned a great deal.
Nice professor, helpful to students, good attitude.
I can't believe students say they can learn from this professor. She is a very nice lady, but definitely shouldn't teach because you can't understand her english at all. She is very hard to follow, but subject itself is not too hard. Make sure TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK that's the only way you can get over with this class.
Great class. Good professor, came to class prepared and extremely fair.
she is an audio book. Because what she did in every class was not teaching but read the slides or textbook to the class instead. Even the examples she gave were also from the textbook. Exams are quite hard because around 40% of students failed in the 1st midterm
If you are a relatively smart student who is willing to participate and have a decent ability to approach the class material logically, and most importantly be able to learn stuff by your self using the textbook and slides without help from the prof's help, then u can be successful. Good Understanding of Chinese accent will be huge plus
She's really sweet, but her lectures are not helpful. Do all the homework and study a little to do well. The stuff will look hard in the beginning, but you will get used to it if you do your work.
The course material is hard, the book doesn't make it any easier for understanding. And the professor... she's a nice woman, but... Her accent is too difficult to understand, she didn't really explain anything, but just read the slides. We had to study everything on our own. It is a college, but students do pay to be explained the material! AVOID!!
Good Course. Good teacher. The professor was great overall.
Doesn't teach. Makes students put hw problems on the board and explain it themselves. Will scream if you get it wrong, no help at all. Test problems are two steps past what is in the hw, hardly anyone finishes on time. Textbook somewhat helpful. Overall a poor experience. Would not recommend.
The greatest! I learned a lot in class.
The course is very student driven so if you do not ask questions or participate then don't expect to do well. Granted, there's room for improvement on Hsu's end but if you do ALL the HW and get up there as often as you can then you'll do well. She answers every email timely and provides graded material back quickly. WreHSUmania! Form a smart group.
Prof. Hsu comes off as being mean and cold - but she is really a sweetheart. Hsu is very committed and has a very low tolerance for lazy students. Do not expect to learn all the concepts in class. You MUST complete all the homeworks and case studies early with your group. Last minute will not cut it..
Prof Hsu makes sure students thoroughly understand the topics through homework and case studies. Although case studies do require quite a bit of time, you learn a lot in the process. Many of these concepts are difficult to grasp unless you spend time working on them. If you're looking for a shortcut or easy A, ... good luck.
Hard to follow, strong accent, and just displays a lack of interest in teaching. Makes students present homework so they can teach instead. Self-learning can be tough since the textbook teaches some topics differently (or not at all). On the bright side, she curves at the end. My tip is to form a good group when you are told the first day of class!
PRO: the turnover for test grades and case study grades is ridiculously fast. She is very nice. She curves all grades at the end. CON: YOU have to really concentrate to understand what she is saying because of her accent. Attendance is a MUST. TIP: form a good group in the beginning and do well on ALL case studies. OVERALL: just ok
A very nice professor. I hope to take other courses from her in the future.
She is great! You will learn a lot.
I took both MGT 3500 and MGT 3710 with her, and I have learned more than my friends in other classes.
She's extremely hard to understand. It's easier to teach yourself the material rather than try to understand her. She teaches slightly different versions than the textbook in some cases. She will let you fix problems on the case studies if you ask, and will respond quickly to emails which is good. Wouldn't really recommend her anyways.
Awful. Avoid at all costs.
It's extremely hard to understand her, but she she knows her stuff. volunteer to do homework problems and study them because the test are pretty much the same. find a good group at the beginning of the class, case studies are done in groups.
I must admit I had a genuine interest in attending this class. She comes off as cold but really isn't, she's a nice lady and will help you when you're in need. She makes yo present the HW problems at the beginning of each class. I myself presented almost every class during the latter days of the semester and she cruved my grade rather generously.
Easy class if you are a self-taught person. You do not need to pay attention in class (which you will not understand anyway) Learn from slides and practice the reviews. All slackers should take her bc she will curve you to the moon but students who perform well in every exams, you get what you work for. You get it?
She may come off as cold but she really isn't. She is there to help if you don't understand something. She lets you present the HW at the beginning of each class which I did plenty of times. this really conquered my fear of public speaking. Tests are tough but she gives you partial credit. Attendance matters. Do the HW. Show effort.
She is a nice lady but her lectures are overwhelming; she talks really fast with heavy accent and to understand her is nearly impossible. I wish i was able to understand her better; shegrades the exams strictly and curve? I don't know if she will curve at the end or not I hope she does :(
3 midterms (No final), case studies, & HW galore. No easy button here. Grp case studies takes a lot of time so start early. Really good with email, so ask a lot of ques. Allows redos on case study ques if you ask. Practice the examples in & at the chapters . Tests are just like the HW & review probs. Keep up with HW and make sure you understand.
Will legit go over examples without explaining them, will just do it and expect you to get it. Extremely heavy accent that will leave you wondering not comprehending anything. SO many of the students in this class teach themselves with the textbook. She speaks fast and when you ask her a question will look at you like you should of learned this.
Stay away from her, very tough class even though you are great in MGT. Her exams surprise you and she's a tough grader. Her accent is very harsh yet she talks fast. So you would have to learn the lecture by yourself and her accent at the same time.
There are 10 points curve at the end (based on class average). I got 77,78,80 for exams and ended up with B+. I never understood what she was saying in class but I studied by myself. In the exam, there are always things not covered in class. If possible, try to study more than lecture notes or slides.
She is the best professor at Baruch. Super smart and fully understands her subject. She has 3 exams which are almost exactly like her review sheets with different numbers, and she allows cheat sheets. It's almost impossible to fail her class with minimal effort.
Don't listen to any of the troll reviews about Lie-Fern Hsu. Her class is very difficult because you aren't able to understand what she is saying half the time due to her heavy accent. Avoid at all cost, but you most likely won't be able to because she's the only one that teaches this section. Goodluck! <3
this might as well be an online course because you basically teach yourself. Her accent is atrocious, impossible to understand her. Don't know how she thinks she can teach if she can't be understood. A very critical grader, exams take too long to complete in the amount of time you have. Avoid if at all possible.
Accent will take some time to get used to. Prof goes through slides and then has students go up and solve the problems to teach the class. Most people didn't know what was going on but if you teach yourself it shouldn't be too bad. 3 exams and 1 group presentation. I had Chegg which helped a lot too.
Terrible, heavy accent, I cannot understand a word. Not sure how this Professor graduated college and was allowed to teach in college in the USA if she cannot pronounce 99% of the English vocabulary. What's the point of taking her class if you need to study all by yourself and with the help of tutors and classmates.
The worst professor I have ever had. Her HEAVY accent makes it impossible to understand anything she says. Its nearly impossible to finish the tests on time. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Fall 2019 will be her last semester. Her accent is very tough to get over, but the beginning concepts are simple math and not too hard. Make sure to get a good group for groupwork because she gives credit to those who participate. Will also know if you are not in class. When it comes to excel, good luck because it gets very tough to understand her.
A bit difficult to understand due to her accent, but if you take the time to go through her slides and homework, the material there is sufficient. Exams are long with limited time, but she literally gives you the exact TYPE of questions that will be on the exam in her review sheets so you get some and you lose some. That's life. Just review well.
