This professor micromanages the classroom by allotting a large portion of your grade to miniscule homework assignments. She assigns seats so you might end up sitting somewhere that is not conducive to your particular learning style. The material is exceptionally difficult as it is without the added busy work.
Insane amounts of homework due on blackboard for each class. Spend hours doing homework assignments for less than five points, and study extremely hard for little satisfaction. Heard through the grapevine that this class is not particularly hard, but this teacher is.
Hands down the worst course I've ever taken. I have never put so much work into a class that I can't seem to pull a decent grade out of. Never mind that I'm studying for it of my own accord, she assigns an incredible amount of homework in aggregate, and its not worth much in terms of points individually, but collectively it could ruin your grade.
She is the worst professor I have ever had (I'm a senior) She teaches you absolutely nothing during class.. She prepares no lesson plan what so ever. The only material covered in class is either homework you attempted to do or a in class exercise, which must be completed prior to class???? She needs to be reevaluated by the administration.
DO NOT TAKE WITH THIS TEACHER!WORST ACCTING TEACHER.Expects you to work outside of class atLEAST 1 hr a day 7days a week!Homework takes 1-2 hours per assignment&she assigns3-4 per class.Keep in mind these assignments are worth 2points each. She gives extra credit...but going to an internship fair that takes 2-3 hours, she will give you 1 point.
This is the hardest teacher i have ever taken at ISU. She acts like this class is the only class you take, so you get tons of homework every night for very little points that still have a big effect on your grade. She thinks accounting is life. Oh, by the way, she has no idea how to teach. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR OR YOU WILL HATE YOUR LIFE.
Worst teacher i have had at Illinois State. She has no idea how to teach a class. I have 3 suggestions... 1) Do not take this teacher. 2) Do not take this teacher. 3) Do not take this teacher!!!!!!!!
Extremely hard teacher. Getting 90s or even 100s in exam can still possibly end up with a B. The group project is the worst thing you can ever have. Tons of homework and in-class exercise that take hours. Besides, you can't even choose your own seats in the class. However, she is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Full time 3.5+ students choice.
I would NOT recommend taking her for this class. Tons of mandatory homework and difficult exams. She does not really teach the concepts so if you aren't knowledgable in accounting, get ready to teach yourself everything. I'm pretty good at accounting and had to work extremely hard to even get a low B in this class.
Hardest professor in the College of Business. Tests are not too bad, but homework is due every class and takes hours to complete. She doesn't cover anything conceptual in class, but you will be tested on it. Group project will suck the life out of you. She is ruthless is taking points. Avoid her if at all possible!
Grade extremely hard on group project. Quite impossible to get full credit for homework without check figures, so make sure you check your work before hand it in. Check figures are available on the textbook website.
worst teacher ever. hours of homework everyday that is due at 8am the day of your class no matter what time your class actually meets. The tests arent too bad if you understand accounting. the group project is miserable and time consuming, not to mention she grades it extremely hard. avoid her at all costs...SERIOUSLY!!!
All the ratings on this professor are hogwash. Professor Mitchell is an outstanding teacher who gives 150% to her students. She gives a lot of credit for doing homework and keeping up. She demands excellence. Maybe that's why her ratings are low.
This class requires tons of time, much more than any other class I've taken here. She gives mandatory exercises and homework for each chapter that are only worth 2 or 3 points but take hours. Tests aren't that hard if you're good at accounting already. Project was not well outlined and her expectations are way too high. Nice lady but awful class.
Worst "teacher" I've ever had and I've been to several colleges.
Great professor! I had her for an MBA acc course and she was extremely helpful. Since this is a grad course she expects you to read the chapter before class so you are caught up and prepared to discuss it. She does not give much homework, just 3 exams and a group project. The project is time consuming. if you read the ch and pay attention its fine
This class is so time consuming it's not even funny. Class project is not improving my knowlege on accounting at all. She is a great teacher at teaching the real material and is very open to helping students. Just be prepared to do a lot of bussy work
I loved this teacher. The negative comments on here are way off. Yes there was a lot of work but it helps you to understand what is usually a very tough class for a lot of people. This was my 2nd time taking it & I hated it the first time but she's so helpful, and makes it so clear, she was a great teacher and it ended up being my favorite class.
I hated this class. She will call you out in class to answer questions even if you dont raise your hand. She has quizzes every week that are only 5 points but are impossible to get the full 5 points. Her tests aren't awful if you study a lot. She rarely rights anything down during lecture so it's hard to follow. I would NOT take her for this class.
This class is horrible! This is her first semester teaching this class fully and I think she has forgotten that she is teaching intro students. Quiz every week but only worth 5 points. Assigns homework but doesn't collect it often. I would not take this class unless you are very good at accounting and willing to teach yourself how to do it.
Bad news. I STRONGLY recommend a different professor for this course. She does NOT teach at all. 5pt quizzes every week almost impossible to get the full 5pts. Easily studied 15+ hours for the tests and got low Cs. Assigns homework and spends the class period going over the homework that no one understands in the first place.
If possible take this course with another instructor! She flies through all of the information without even covering anything she tests or quizzes us on. The tests are impossible and she throws problems in there we never did. Even with going to every class and doing all of the homework I still had to teach myself 90% of the work
Just awful. Forces you to teach yourself the material. First exam had a 60% fail rate. Puts everything on you and does virtually nothing to teach. Pathetic. If you signed up for her class, turn around while you still can.
Worst professor I've had at ISU. Don't make the mistake of taking her. Tests are not based on what is learned in class and she's rude to students when they don't know answers in class.
Not a good teacher at all. Level of difficulty of the problems for practice and homework are insane. She teaches nothing in class and basically you have to teach yourself. Avoid her at all costs!!!!
She is a great professor if you are willing to learn. I strongly recommend attending every class even though it is not mandatory. She does tons of review problems in class and her tests are fairly easy if you study. Overall, very helpful.
she one of the most condescending people I've ever met. I suggest going to office hours because to suck up and ask questions (even though she doesnt even help) just so she can see your face because then shes more likely to bump you up that little bit if your grades are borderline. BUT I suggest you find another teacher because she's actually awful!
Class is not that difficult if you do the hw and study reasonably well for the tests. Tests aren't too hard and the hw is an easy 3/3 points. Quizzes every other day are worth 5 points and aren't too hard. Everyone who says she is way too hard clearly doesn't know what college level really is.
This class is what you make of it. Professor Mitchell gives you every opportunity to succeed. The homework is not worth much but the problems on the test are very similar, and the homework adds up at the end of the semester. She always make herself available to her students and is will to work with anyone who wants to learn.
-Homework takes a while and isn't worth many points--suggest getting Chegg to help with checking answers---tests are just like the homework/practice problems but multiple choice is based off the book, so make sure to read or at least do the guided notes--definitely makes you learn the material, which is really nice for an accounting major
She is an excellent professor, and makes herself very available to students who actually care and want to learn. She is kind of intimidating, and the class is no breeze, but be prepared, go to lectures, actually try to learn and you will be successful in her class. She offers a decent amount of EC so don't beat yourself up if you don't ace the exams
This class was a good class. Kind of a work load. If you dont go to class youll be lost. She is an awesome professor. Always willing to help you out in whatever situation. Makes herself available for you and will never let you leave (unless you want to) until you understand the problem.
Mitchell covered a lot in one semester (about 4 months), but she explains the concepts and transactions concisely and assigns relevant homework that saves you for tests. She's very accommodating, and encourages asking for help. I didn't do much studying, just reviewed problems and key concepts. Her tests are standard, mult choice and problems.
Amazing teacher! Personally, I like accounting; therefore, I didn't find the material too hard, but some do. She's super sweet and she really cares about students. Read the chapter, do the online and written homework. Before tests, do the extra multiple choice, and you should get an A. If you don't understand something, she's always there to help!
So much busy work that feels like it doesn't really help at all. Lectures are about homework and you're technically supposed to come to class already knowing the material that's going to be lectured about. She is VERY organized and wants everything a certain way. I wish I would've chosen a different teacher, I feel like she makes it hard to succeed
This women is the most helpful Professor I have had here at isu. Yes she makes you do a lot of work for little points but it makes you actually understand the material. She goes over everything in class and if you ever need help she will be there. She will know your name out of a whole lecture hall if you are participating. Wish she taught 132!
Expects alot from her students but she is always there for you when you need help. She gives out SO MUCH extra credit. After each test she gives extra credit for the things people got wrong. 14 points she gave out one time. There is homeowork due almost everyday before class, but IT HELPS . I thought I was going to fail but got an A. TAKE HER!!!!!!
ACC 131 with Mitchell was the first of many accounting classes I will take. She does give a lot of homework, but you go over all of it in class the class after it's assigned. Tests are tough, but most accounting tests aren't easy if you're a beginner. Always in her office during hours and always willing to help. GO TO CLASS OR YOU WILL BE LOST!
Great Teacher! She's really good at explaining things and if you don't understand she also explains it really well if you go into her office hours. I highly recommend going into her office hours. She explains things differently and goes into more detail. Overall great teacher!
She is an excellent teacher. There is a lot of course work, but it honestly really helps you grasp the concepts. She has so many resources and offers to much guidance and help to her students. She really cares about her students passing and actually understanding!
She is an excellent professor. She does have a military background, so she expects the best from each student which incudes coming to class everyday and weekly participation. She also assigns a lot of work, but she tells you what to focus on and forces you to read what you'll need to know. I would definitely take her again.
She does a great job of explaining the material by giving you different examples. she is easy to approach and has tons of office hours. She assigns homework from the book that really helps boost your grade if you do it. I highly recommend taking her.
She is always available for office hours and will sit with you as long as you need. She goes over every single homework assignment the day that it is due. There are alot of fill in the blank problems on the tests so you just have to know how to do them. She is so helpful and way better than my first accounting teacher.
Tough subject, but fantastic professor. She has so much experience and uses relevant examples. Always available to help you. She truly cares about if you understand the material. Definitely recommend her.
DO THE EXTRA CREDIT; this is majorly beneficial. She's a pretty solid teacher if you have some previous knowledge on the topic. The tests are weighted heavily but average out with everything else in the end, which was a plus for me. I have a 93% right now which means I have to get an 83% to get an A and a 38% to get a B.(The final is tomorrow)
Not a great experience with her, the lectures are long, repetitive, and hard to pay attention to. Everything she's saying makes perfect sense to her, but she doesn't relate it well to students. Theres plenty of times that she asks if there are any questions, but you really don't know what questions to ask. Also tests are hard and final's cumulative
This was the hardest class I've taken so far. Dont take her! She was available during office hours but whenever I asked her a question she would make me look at the book or her notes which I could do on my own, I just needed further explanation. Many times I found help from the other accounting professors that actually knew how to explain it well.
This class made me decide to major in accounting. She is very straightforward with the subject and truly knows everything to be known about it. She is always available to help and encourages you to participate in class. Lots of at home work but it really makes you learn the subject. Not an easy course but she makes it the best she can
Best professor I've had! This is a tough class and she's a tough grader but if you put in the time and effort you are supposed to you will do fine. Always available for help and cares a lot about her students and being there to help!
Homework, quizzes, and ticket ins are all easy points you need because the exams are long and hard. The final is accumulative and there is no study guides for tests.. Prepare to do a lot of studying for exams outside of class and dedicating many hours to this class. Aslong as you put in the work it should be an easy A/B with her. Participate
She rocks. Accounting rocks. Put in the time and you can get a B. Do the extra practice problems on Cengage Now
Hard hard class. Be prepared for a ton of outside work and long hard tests.
Nice and warm individual. Very easy to get in contact with outside of class. Students basically has to teach themselves. Go through a different chapter every week or two. If you don't get something, she explains it to the point where you will. ALOT of homework! Exam every three chapters.
The absolute best professor I have had at ISU. This class is extremely difficult and I underestimated how much time and effort needs to be put into it. This class is challenging but professor Mitchell was ALWAYS willing to offer extra help and was very kind and worked with me until I understood it. 100% would take again, she is the best!
Lots of Homework but she is a good teacher
If you have to take accounting, take it with her, but take it a semester where you have time because she makes you do a ton of pointless homework. She also has her husband who probably drives an 02 RAM and likes to wear jean on jean and camo help proctor exams.
Her reggienet page is the greatest/ most organized thing i've seen in my life. Makes you work for your grade, but you really learn the material and feel great.
She assigns a ridiculous amount of homework per chapter, but that forces you to understand the material and be more prepared for the exams. She is very organized and does a good job explaining fundamental accounting concepts. A lot of opportunities for points but still a tough class to get an A in.
She is one of the best professors I've ever had. There are so many grades, and she give a lot of EC. Her Reggienet has so many resources, and she always helps. You have to put in the work, but its better than having a teacher who doesn't care. If you've never taken accounting, take it with her! Her tests are very straightforward, no surprises.
She truly cares about her students and provides several resources for those who are struggling she also gives you a decent amount of extra credit that can be earned by writing a quick paragraph or two and also her test usually have a decent amount of extra credit as well overall shes definitely one of the best professors ISU has to offer.
Professor Mitchell is very knowledgeable and approachable. Shes a good balance of God helps those who helps themselves and southern hospitality. Do all your work and approach her if you need help. The class definitely isnt easy, but as long as you keep on the ball with work, you should be fine. Show up to class too!
this woman must think that her class is the only class you have because she assigns AT LEAST 3-4 hours of watching videos and activities per class. awful. take 131 with another professor. flipped learning is a no go.
As an accounting major, taking accounting 131 with Professor Mitchell was extremely helpful! She gives a lot of work, but it was very helpful. I would definitely recommend Professor Mitchell for accounting majors, but if you aren't an accounting major the work might be overwhelming.
Awesome Teacher! She really cares but the con about it is the fact that we were using an online tool to learn which I believe wasnt helpful the fact that accounting is such a hard topic. I expected to be actually taught and just not by videos online but she is an awesome person overall!! Awesome Teacher! Available for Questions!!
She is a good teacher but the way she teaches is not efficient. The homework she assigns is online AND in book. The online homework takes up a lot of my time and on top of that she has book work problems and I feel like I don't have much time to work on other homework. Tests are set up poorly in my opinion.
Great professor. Gives lots of homework, but personally, I feel like it benefited my learning a lot. The setup of the course is very organized and she wants to see her students succeed. She's very knowledgeable about accounting and she gave many opportunities for students to receive help, in addition to study guides for each test. Highly recommend.
SO MUCH HOMEWORK. The class is not that bad and not that hard if you literally just finish all of your homework and assignments. You could bomb everything else and still pass as long as you turn everything in. Two weeks before the final I went in for help and she told me I was gonna fail the class and I passed so I don't think she is very kind
The setup for this course is that you watch video lectures before class, then come to class to do practice problems & go over hw. The videos and hw can be very time consuming, but if you stay on top of it you are likely to do well in the class. The test are hard, but she provides study guides and holds study sessions before the test.
Best Professor I ever had. Online homework is for completion not accuracy. If you watch the videos and go to class you will get an A. She gives too many resources, and is great at explaining content. She was an accountant for Jimmy Dean which explains her knowledge. In my opinion the best professors are those who worked in that field.
She has online videos for all the material. WATCH THEM and TAKE NOTES. Thats how you do good in this class. If you're lazy don't even bother taking the course at all with any teacher. She is by far the best accounting teacher and you will learn and get an A if you pay attention and do the work. Drops three lowest in class/ online quizzes.
Unfortunately Professor Mitchell is one of the worst professors I have taken. She doesn't care about students and isn't very helpful to questions. Basically this class is taught by the textbook only, not the professor. She has very confusing lectures that just leave the class wondering what just happened. I highly recommend not taking her.
Lisell is the worst professor I have taken so far. If you are NOT an accounting major I highly recommend taking it with a different professor.
The class consists of learning through online videos made by professor Mitchell. There is attendance taken but it doesnt count for anything. She gives out pink and green note cards and she uses them to ask the class pointless yes or no questions. The tests count for most of the grade and her format is very convolute. I dont recommend her.
Professor Mitchell has a great heart for learning and teaching, but there are some major issues. The amount of online work can seem ridiculous at times, especially on top of the textbook work that's also due. She is very organized, but class time is more like a waste of time. You'll learn the material, but want to pull your hair out simultaneously.
Honestly the worst teacher I have had in college. Her class is hard to follow and honestly the whole thing is just online videos and the lecture is totally pointless. Her grading is kind of ambiguous on tests and she has us do a bunch of work that doesn't really seem necessary. Defiantly avoid taking her class at all costs.
honestly her class was a mess. You will learn from the online videos, but you'll want to pull your hair out, just as someone else said.
terrible
the only good thing i can say about her is the videos she made are very effective, but her class time is a complete waist of time. she assignments so much pointless homework and if i were to take the class again i would go with a different teacher, hands down.
This is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. She assigns so much homework that is very time consuming. I literally spent my entire day trying to learn what was assigned and do the homework, and I still don't understand it. Her lectures are pointless and the whole class is based around videos that you have to watch. Horrible teacher.
Professor Mitchell is a pretty alright professor. Because this is an online course at this point in time, expect A LOT of homework and work in order to understand the material. However, if you dedicate time to this class and somehow manage to stay above the coursework, it shouldn't be too bad. But be prepared for a battle if you don't study.
Easily the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. Obviously we're all online right now but her mandatory videos take out about 2 hours of your day before you even do the assignments. She doesn't care if you understand the material or not, and grades tough on your work. The amount of assignments you have to do is ridiculous. 2+ hours. Avoid.
The amount of homework in this class is ridiculous. I am so worried about finishing the assignments that I don't have time to actually learn the material for the exams. "Lectures" are just online videos--even before covid-19, and actual class time is a complete waste.
Im in the middle of the course now the worst class I have ever taken over 25 pages to study just for our study guide alone not including studying the dozens of quizzes and notes you also need to study to do somewhat well on this. I understand accounting is a lot work but this much work is a joke its no wonder most failed the previous exam.
Very time consuming and difficult if you already arent perfect at accounting
she is very lecture heavy and the grl activities you do are annoying and take so much time. also 2 quizzes every week and class work would take me about 10 plus hours outside of class time each week. if you skip class you wont pass.
Liesel is the most uncompassionate teacher on Earth. Not only does she not care about you, but she really doesn't care if you learn either. Good luck cramming in 20 hours worth of assignments every week and not learning a single thing either. Loved taking her 4.5 hours long final exam online and proctored! Never take this class, you won't pass.
I'm not a Business-related major, but it was required to take. I found myself doing more work for this class than my other 4 combined. No real lectures, just videos. Absurd amount of homework. Exams take at least 2 hours. The zoom meetings just go over homework answers. If you have to take ACC 131, avoid the extra stress and do NOT take her!
I'd wrather listen to wap every fahking morning than take this fahking class again. This class made my finals week so hectic it's insane, 23 pages filled up w info that we gotta MemorizE to get an ight grade. If you care about your academic success, mental health(fr its crazy), and quality of fahking life you won't take this class.
She's a very nice professor but in comparison to the other ACC 131 professors, she gives way too much work. Other classes had half the daily work and quizzes, and she was also the only one with proctored exams. The content itself isn't too difficult though.
She gives too much work and when you try to express that to use she dismisses your claims. She will have more than 10 assignments due every week. Heavy on lectures and guest speaks. Expects a lot of outside class participation. Gives unnecessary work but some can be googled. Not enough teaching compare to the work being done.
Is this course work? yes! Accounting is complex, it requires a lot of practice and memorization. Is this course difficult? Not at all, plenty of work means there's a lot of points to be earned plus EC. Are tests easy? If you do the work. The tests are based off the homework and videos that Mitchell herself created. TLDR; Lots of hw, easy tests
After taking this class, I would not even call her a teacher/professor. You have to teach yourself all of the material in a learning module that takes over 2 hours every night. I dreaded doing work for this class and if I could go back and change professors I 100% would. Do NOT take this class with her.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life and the stress level is insane. If you're struggling enough already then DO NOT take this class with Mitchell I promise you will regret it. All of the homework is online and you basically have to teach yourself how to do it, all you do in class is go over homework. If you get behind drop it.
The hardest class Ive ever taken at ISU. In addition she gave more homework than any other class Ive had. Her tests are extremely long and challenging. If you want to pass her class you have to study so much that it consumes your life. Ive also never seen such a shared hatred among students for a professor. DO NOT TAKE THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS... unless you want extremely long and extensive tests, homework that is so large in amount that you focus on getting it done rather than actually focusing on the material. Liesel if you are reading this your class is the last thing any student wants. Ridiculously long test and a large amount of HW. #makeaccountingfun
If you are not an accounting major or don't want a couple hours of busy work every night... RUN WHILE U CAN!
I'm currently in 131 and it honestly isnt as bad as everyones making it seem. Yes, you do have to teach yourself the content, but you can always go back and rewatch the videos. I may be biased since I'm doing well in the class, but that is the one class I actually enjoy going to.
Worst teacher EVER. Assigns an inhumane amount of homework and quizzes worth barely anything. The tests are worth so much so if you bomb the test, which you will (unless you devote your life to studying), you will fail the class. Nobody finishes the tests they are too long. Only around 20 people left in the WHOLE LECTURE that haven't dropped yet.
Professor Mitchell and the Acc 131 class is by far my most difficult class. The exams are 7 pages long at best, and you get assigned 2 quizzes every Friday. Just this week before thanksgiving break we were asked to do 10 videos, 10 assignments, 2 quizzes, as well as 2 problem sets with 20 parts a piece. Find another professor before you choose her.
Liesel is such a friendly professor. Although the class required LOADS of homework that I barely had time to do, I learned so much from the class. I struggled slightly with the class but if you rewatch the videos and go to class to ask questions, youll be fine.
Unless you can write 100 words per minute, you will not finish her tests. Half the lecture doesn't finish, yet she still doesn't shorten them. The tests are worth more than 70 percent of your grade so good luck if you fail one. Now I have to retake this class even though I know all the material just because she HAS to make her test 9 pages long.
She basically makes you learn all the material outside of class on your own and then makes you come to class just to waste your time by going over everything she already made you do on your own. And then her tests are almost impossible to finish in time. I can't be too hard on her though because she always did offer her office hours for extra help.
Professor Mitchell is very good at being available and accommodating to students that reach out to her. If you're struggling in the course and talk to her, she gives lots of options for success. The exams are hard, but she basically tells you the exact questions in her study guides. ISU's ACC 131 curriculum is extremely content heavy though.
This class easily has the heaviest workload of any course I've taken so far at ISU, and that adjustment was very difficult for me at the beginning of the semester. However, Professor Mitchell is very kind and understanding, and if you are willing to put in the effort and also attend office hours, a high grade is certainly attainable.
Just horrific is the best way to describe her class. Unnecessary work graded to harsh, loads of work that doesn't calm down overtime. You would think she would take a hint with all these reviews and students not being able to finish all the work with decent grades but no she doesn't. Really poor time management as well, not enough time to finish.
Only professor I have ever left a review for. Does not care about her students at all. Makes assignments due randomly at 8pm three nights a week. You have to learn everything on your own. Worst of all, she has an exam the first day back from spring break.
This is the most stressful class I have ever taken. She grades so harshly no matter how much effort you put into your work. Save yourself and don't take her class.
Do whatever you can to avoid her. I would change my major before I took a class taught by her again.
The work load is insane. The test are so long you won't finish. Work is due at 8 every night. 2 quizzes a week and a total of 6 exams. Prepare to watch 2 hours worth of videos a week. She also makes you pay 100 dollars for her videos that you need in order to take the class. Did I mention the long test because trust me you won't finish!
I made an account on here just so I could post this as a warning for any potential students who may take ACC 131 with Mitchell. RUN RUN RUN! This has by far been the most stressful class I have ever taken. You will never finish the tests unless you can write at the speed of The Flash. Huge workload with assignments due randomly throughout the week.
This teacher hands down caused me to drop out of school. I was so miserable that i literally dropped out.
This professor genuinely hates life. I have never even seen her smile once. You will be drowned with so much homework in this class that you won't have time to actually teach yourself the material. Avoid her at all costs.
second time had to get stuck with her and can honestly say she is the worst teacher I have ever had with so much work you won't be able to think properly or have enough time to understand. If you see any good reviews on here I can promise its only people who are super smart or even more likely herself tryna up the rating. DO NOT TAKE
worst class and teacher I have ever had, and please if your on here reading these take a hint and lighten up the load or try different approaches because I have never met someone who actually enjoyed this class unless they are her writing the good reviews like cmon you really think that its 50/50 between awful and great reviews.
I'm only writing this because I was worried for this class coming in after I saw the poor reviews, but it is not nearly as bad as I expected based off the other reviews on here. I will agree that there is a lot of work compared to some other classes, but from my perspective the homework is actually helpful because it matches the exams perfectly.
I got an A but not because of her. Her online textbook is poorly made and the videos in it that you need to watch can take several hours if you take good notes. With the amount of homework and the videos, you are basically in class six days a week, and everything is due right at 8 pm. Tests are crazy too. She acts like you don't have other classes.
There's no break on homework, be prepared to borderline make this class your priority, she gives you a software with videos to teach you the topic and she expects you to have it down in a week, it's a lot of work on your own and ask for help later, tests are long barely could complete them, hard grader no real sympathy once so ever. JUST RUN!
Even though this class is a very heavy workload, if you put in the effort you will do well. a lot of grades are completion based and there a ton of grades in the grade book. She offers exam retakes and lots of help. A lot of learning is outside the class room with a lot of practice problems. Mitchell is very kind and wants her students to do well!
this professor is genuinely a good person, she is a little intimidating when first meeting her. I was so scared for this class because of the ratings but honestly, if you stay on top of the homework and know how to do them it shouldn't be a super hard class.
If you take accounting with Mitchell, be prepared to have so much homework that you can fall behind on easily. You have to do the lectures outside of class, then go to the lectures anyway so she can teach you what you already taught yourself at home! Tests are also obnoxiously long it's humorous. Avoid her!
Dr. Mitchell is a very likeable person, but this class is extremely tough. I got a good grade in the class only because I spent about 5-7 hours outside of class going through the materials. Expect 2 quizzes per week (10 mc questions), HW assignments due on Su, Tu, and F at 8PM. Exams are EXACTLY like study guides (memorize it)
If you put in the work this is an easy class. The material is all straightforward, but there is a lot of work you have to do outside of class. I took accounting in high school and it is very similar, I could see people having a hard time in the class if they have no prior accounting knowledge but if you study you'll be fine.
This class has a lot of weight on tests, if you do bad on one of them you are pretty much done for and you get no break in between homework, the amount of work in this class is INSANE its almost like she doesn't see that you have other classes to take care of. i suggest you to take someone else, the 45 awful ranks show how she is, plz take the hint
She is a great professor who actually wants to help kids but there is so much homework and prep for that class. I was doing accounting 6-7 days a week and only had class 2 days a week. She will help you if she sees you are trying to do well in the class but this is not a blow off class by any means.
Most stupid assignments ever .She makes you write definitions on paper, they dont even do that in high schools.
30 minutes to create all 3 financial statements was sabotage on her part. Also, her multiple choice problems consist of 50/50s because sometimes 2 of the answers can be correct. Seems like she wants me to fail.
She gives you homework even before the school year starts, does a poor job explaining her work, HEAVY test emphasis (tests are 46% of the grade, final is 23% of your grade) so 4 exams determine your final grade. Do not take this class unless you wanna spend your weekends in the accounting tutoring lab. Final exams are at 7:50 am for this class too.
This teacher's teaching style consists of having the students learn about the lesson beforehand for homework, then in class, she goes over what you should have learned on your own. The homework sometimes can take you anywhere from an hour to 4 hours. Exams are worth 46% of your grade so if you fail one you will have a very hard time to get back up.
I honestly don't know why this professor has such bad reviews, but I loved her. I not good at math but she made accounting 131 so easy to understand and despite the fact that there is a lot of homework, as long as you do it you get points for it. The homework really helps with understanding the material and if you attend class you will not fail.
This professor is the worst professor I have absolutely ever had. You have to teach yourself everything and she will not help you when you need it. RUN FROM THIS WOMAN!
im honestly suprised she has a 3- was expecting in the negatives i dont think she will ever understand we actually have lives and they dont revolve around accounting 131 class.
PLZ RUN! If you're like me and you think you'll be fine taking Mitchell after reading the reviews, you are WRONG. It is 100% worth it to take an 8am with ANYONE else. If you still decide to take her after reading her awful reviews, be prepared for hours upon hours of teaching yourself. She acts like your only class is hers that she's above you.
Currently studying for the final and in review of this semester, I can honestly say this is the most frustrating professor I have ever taken a class with. Prepare to spend several hours each week watching videos and completing activities on her personal accounting website. Also her grading system is inconsistent from student to student.
SO MUCH WORK! You will be overwhelmed with the amount of work for this one class. There's a ton of homework and assignments outside of class.
I am now a Junior and I took Professor Mitchell last year. I cannot begin to explain that you should dodge and weave this professor like Mike Tyson is throwing haymakers in the final round. I had never been so mentally challenged in my life from someone of this caliber.
Definitely the worst professor I have had at ISU. She makes it completely pointless to go to class because you have to learn everything and do the homework before class. She is very particular on test grading. And assigned seats
Just bad.
She is very professional and can be a bit dismissive at times, but it really only matters about how much effort you put into the class. I have 102 percent as of right now and could not care less about going to class because if you understand the content, it is pointless. Try to pick someone rated higher, if you can.
I found myself putting in ~10 hours a week outside of class watching videos and doing homework. In class time is used to review homework that was due at 8pm the night before so if you understand the material no need to show up to class at all.
It was a pleasure taking Acc 131 with Professor Mitchell. Regardless of hard and sometimes confusing way of grading, I not only learned much more than in other courses EVER. But also I actually liked it.
Lots of homework and quizzes which were due at 8pm? which made it more difficult to turn it in on time. She had a "flipped classroom," so attendance was pointless because I had to teach myself everything before class anyway. Only decent thing was that she offered retakes on two out of the three exams. Overall, terrible experience.
This class is horrendous on its own, but it's even worse with her! If you have the option to take it with a different professor, do it. If you don't, wait until summer school, or good luck! Run while you can, you have been warned.
Although the class was hard on assignments, know that it is possible to get an decent grade. She always has office hours available, go to class because even if you don't understand the material going to class helps you understand it better. Most of the exams are based on the journal entries for each chapter. (13 chapters in total)
Homework due before class begins, homework due by 8 pm 3 times a week outside of class claiming its "good for students". Not knowing my schedule and forcing a due date makes you a terrible person, and a worse teacher. I would hate to take her again. I would never recommend her, even if it's a required course. I'd rather change majors or transfer.
acc131 will be hard and you'll have a lot of work to do regardless of what professor you take but i like professor mitchell. there is no reading from the textbooks but videos and activities, which i prefer to reading a textbook. attendance isn't mandatory if you understand the videos but they are repetitive to help solidify what you learned
no no no no no do NOT take this class with her you will be doing homework every single day the entire semester. lectures don't teach you material, they just go over homework that was due the night before. you teach yourself the material online. they should've just said this was an online class and saved students time, money, and unnecessary stress.
Would recommend if in finance and accounting. A LOT of homework but she forces you to learn it. Is strict with due dates and has long tests but offers a ton of extra credit and partial credit on tests. If you're willing to do the work the class is an easy B at least
I thing professor Mitchell is very smart and has lots of knowledge to give! Yes, I will admit there was plenty of homework to go along with this class, and some of which was repetitive and boring at times. HOWEVER it is so doable if you follow along and do the homework. Mitchell cares about her students!
Her tests are so long that most people don't even finish them.
Honestly, if you're not an Accounting or Finance major I would suggest taking ACC 131 with a different professor. HOWEVER if you are an Accounting or Finance major, you will learn SO much in this class. It is a flipped classroom where you watch videos, do homework and practice before class. Exams are long but includes bonus points. LOTS of homework
Professor Mitchell's class is tough, but engaging with the content is key. Use Unstuck study along with the textbook and office hours to stay on top of the material. Attendance is mandatory, but worth it if you want to learn.
You will love or hate her. If you are an accounting major and want to truly learn the material. She is the professor that you want to take. If you are not an accounting major and are just required to take it, then you will hate her because she teaches in a way that is difficult to understand if you do not care for the class.
If you take accounting with Liesel Mitchell, expect to be able do nothing but this class. Nobody I know including myself has excelled in this class nor enjoyed it.
Honestly i would rather drop out of college then take this course again. The exams are actually insane please take anyone else
You have been warned... If you are looking for an easy accounting class then this is not the one. I spent over 20 hours a week on just the hw that was due at 8pm on Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday. Did horrible on the first 2 exams but then went to every office hour and got a tutor and I still Failed. Wish you luck if you get stuck with her.
she is a nice teacher and is VERY lecture heavy, she gives A LOT of homework that is always due at 8PM. YOU are basically teaching yourself. SO when you come to the lecture she just reviews homework THAT'S IT.
If you are an accounting major I recommend you take this class. Yes it is awful and tedious to do the hours and hours of homework with weird due dates, but she will force you to learn the material very well. She is always open for office hours, and is a fast responder on email. If you just want to cruise through while learning the basics, Dont take
A class taught by someone with little to no touch with reality that thinks accounting should be your sole purpose in life for the semester. Mountains of course work, teach yourself the course via online, massive test you'll run out of time on, embarrassing TAs with cringe banter that wander around like lost puppies to look over your shoulder.
Exceptional instructor with an even better format of the class. GRL is your best friend, in-class time will be review of the homework. I see a lot of complainers in this forum who think all their classes will be a breeze. This was by far the hardest college class I've taken, but it is extremely enjoyable when the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
Prepare for 6-7 homework assignments a week including 2 quizzes every week.
Take this class if you want no life. Take this class if you want to be able to take the CPA 10 times over. Take this class if you want all your hair to fall out. Take this class if you hate yourself. Take this class if you want endless hw. Take this class if you want the library to be your new home. Take this class if you love your computer screen.
She really cares about her students; she will reach out to you to make sure everything is okay with you. There is a lot of homework, and this class may take up most of your time outside class compared to other classes, but you will leave this class having learned something if you do your work. Overall, she's a tough teacher but a great person.
THIS IS NOT A BLOWOFF CLASS! LOTS of hw. HOWEVER, if you're willing to put in the work, you learn a lot. she was kinda scary at first but VERY knowledgeable. if you are an accounting major i suggest taking her class but if it's just a requirement take someone else please. more than half the class dropped understandably. this is not ur 1st choice
Used a "flipped classroom" model of teaching for this course. You are expected to learn the content BEFORE class on the GRL website. I'm not a fan of that style of lecture, nor the HW being due at 8pm but, (as an ACC major) I learned a ton. Half my class dropped but I feel most ratings are overdramatic. Lots of HW though. Lock in and you'll be OK.
She is a good professor and will help you if you let her. Falling behind is easy because there is a lot of work to do. She has office hours USE THEM !!!! Do the little assignments or you will FAIL! She sets it up so you do GRL before class
Do not take her class for any low level classes. If it is above 200 level sure but whatever you do don't take her for any 100 level classes. 15-20 hours of homework a week, weird turn in times, incredibly difficult tests. Gives no feedback on any of the work that you do, if you're in her class I am sorry for you. Get in groupchat or you are done.
Tough class. I took this class a while ago, but if I had not taken her class, I would've never changed my major to accounting and done as well in school as I have. Probably one of the best professors I've had if not the best.
This class is a flipped classroom design and is NOT a blowoff course. There's a LOT of homework and material, which can feel overwhelming at times. That said, Mitchell really cares about her students and is very flexible with office hours and offers individualized support. If you're struggling, watch the GRL videos and go see her, she wants to help
The course is overloaded with busy work, Unclear organization, and excessive proctoring requirements that don't support actual learning. It feels punitive rather then educational.
There is a lot of homework, and class work. If you do the work, you will succeed. The only people I know that did not do well, also did not put in the work necessary to learn accounting. Mitchell makes it clear that she cares about you, and she cares about learning so use her as a resource if you are struggling.
worst teacher I have ever had made me consider switching majors
This is the worst teacher I have ever had for my entire learning career. Instead of making you come to class and learn, she expects you to spend 30-40 hours per week on videos and hw she assigns. The organizational structure is terrible and hard to follow. 100 things are posted a day on canvas making it confusing to understand what you need to do.
She's actually a really good professor and I didn't struggle in this class at all. Exams were stressful but not too bad.
Horrible professor!! Don't take this class if you want to enjoy your semester.
i literally thought i was losing my mind in this class. the homework is worth 1-2 points for at least 2 hours worth of work and test are 120 points. if you do bad on a test there's no coming back ! she doesn't teach in class and expects you to forget about all other classes and watch videos all week.
Professor Mitchell is amazing. I will say you do have to put in work to know what you are doing but she is the most helpful professor I have ever had. She wants to see you succeed and will encourage you as much as she can. She knows what she's talking about and cares about her students a lot.
MItchell class is a hard course that you have to expend 8 hours outside the classroom to do homework and study for exams. She is so helpful in office hours. Assignments are due before 8pm every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday so make sure you stay on top of your work if not this course is going to be a nightmare through the semester.
The majority of my semester was spent working on this class. Multiple due dates throughout the week with a majority of the learning done outside of class through GRL videos. As long as you watch the videos, show up to class with questions and do the work, you'll pass. Getting an A requires a looot of effort but doable.
