She is the worst professor I have ever had. Easily. She is unprepared, (hasn't known what some of "her" slides mean) unclear, (often makes mistakes teaching, having to come back to try to clarify) and just overall stupid. My motivation to go to class lessens with every lecture. The lab instructor (Rhodes Brown) should be teaching the course.

I was so looking forward to this class after finishing CSC 230 taught by michael miller. Not anymore. she's the most horrible prof. Can't teach. can't get myself to listen to her. plain annoying to listen to and she makes so many mistakes I'm lost. and the prelabs & labs are long and tough and so unclear. why is she allowed to teach? why?
Horrible! How is this person allowed to teach ?
She doesn't have a clue about what she's teaching. She should not be teaching. Horrible. ** AVOID AT ALL COSTS **

unbelieveably boring teacher. Completly not understandable. She always contradicts herself and has numerous 'code' errors on her slides and notes. She is the most confusing teacher I have ever had. I could easily teach this program to myself easier than she is teaching it to me.
Do not take a class with this professor. She's very nice, but is very inexperienced and is often confused while teaching, making her students even more confused. Generally, your lecture time will be better spent reading your textbook.
She is awful... I knew nothing about csc when I first took her class. She hasn't helped me out at all. You might as well just read your textbook... she messes you up more than helps you.
Doesn't know anything
nice but can't teach
I got a good grade, but she didn't teach me anything. I had to teach it all to myself.

UGH! Just awful!
Didn't teach me anything, had to learn everything on my own. Words of wisdom: Take the class only if you need it. Do the assignments and you'll get a good grade. Avoid this prof at all costs. Take the class with people you know.
Waste of money, she's a horrible prof. From her notes, it's doubtful if she actually knows how to code at all. There was basically no point in going to her class at all.
Pretty much what everyone else has said... Unfortunately, you had to show up to class around half the time. Lillanne is quite nice and pleasent, and I certainly don't harbour any ill feelings, but I wouldn't recommend having her as a prof. An easy course was made a bit more difficult by errors on exams/assignments.
Do not take this course from her - avoid this prof.
terrible. do not take if you do not have to, but if you do, dont bother going to class because the slides are posted on the internet. plus, you dont learn anything in class, you learn from the labs and the assignments, even though the assignments can get pretty hard. and the midterm is absolutely pointless, it tests things you havent learned yet.
Totally unclear. Unfair marker and a complete mess. No effort is put into the assignments and if shows. Looks as if they were thrown together in 10 minutes. They are full of errors and are just horrible. Should not teach this course. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I found one of the assingments given in class on GOOGLE of all places, doesn't that say something? She doesn't use the text book at all!!! In short it's a waist of money. This course is a mess, DON'T TAKE IT unless you've been programming since you were 12, and if you do, and you don't have prior experience, expect around 50%
I felt like I was in kindergarten again... She treated us like children during lectures. The assignments were ridiculously difficult for our skill level, impossible to do without help. Notes and assignments were full of errors. The tests were too long for the time we had to do them... resuliting in horrible marks...
Assignments are on material out of our grasp including encryption, steganography and manipulating sound files. in her solutions to the assignments, she uses several concepts not covered in class, and even lab instructors were surprised about this. she uses slides provided by the textbook and gives insufficient time for midterms
i dont know where to start, bu then agian neither does she. she's scatterbrained and treats the class as if we are in elementary school.. but an elemntary school where we practice programming all day. she can't teach but she sees no problem with this since she thinks we automatically comprehend everything about programming. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
I agree with all of the below! Dr. Jackson gave off the impression she had never taught before - she was very disorganized, her assignemnts were inappropriate and most of her slides were provided by the textbook. If she hadn't held those problem solving sessions I wouldn't ever go to class, it's not worth it.
Midterms are very long, poorly worded, and poorly constructed. I cannot grasp the fact that she has a PhD but doesn't know how to use apostrophes (no, she's not foreign). Moreover, her instructions for all assignments are extremely vague and ambiguous. Most of the time it is guesswork on your part. Avoid at ALL means. Switch out before too late!
in a word - TERRIBLE! Switch out of this class and avoid it at all costs. No joke! Get out if you can. SHe reads directly off her ppt, is constantly confused, and confuses us. Even on your own she can't answer questions when you show her broken code. The grad students were more helpful. Again, do not EVER take her class!!!!!
DO NOT WANT
horrible professor. couldnt code in java if her life depended on it. do not take this class with her, or any other classes with her because she cannot teach. the assignments are written very poorly as she cannot explain anything. very rude when approached in class.
I cannot learn anything in her class, especially 115. The reasons are all on this page! Her homeworks are never clear presented, and expected a lot from what we never learned. So why we need take her class? Just learn it by ourself!
Worst prof i have ever had!!!Avoid at all costs. Her finals are even worse than her midterms and they are soo unclear to what she wants. Assignments are lengthy and confusing, full of errors and pointless. They have nothing to do with what was taught in class.AVOID
horrible professor. she couldn't teach if her life depended on it. slides are full of errors; assignments are unclear, misleading and bad overall. she actually defends her assignment specifications even though they are terrible according to the whole class. I would be surprized if she could write a java program that said "hello world".
The worst prof and person I have ever met. Don't even bother going to lecture or her office hours cuz you'll learn nothing. She doesn't even know how to program let alone spell. There's no escaping her cuz the department lets her teach CSc level courses from 1st to 4th year ridiculous! All of these horrible ratings for a person with a PhD... wow.
The ratings says it all
Incompetant Prof does not know what she is talking about.
Worst prof at UVic so far. Massive 2-5 hr assignments every week; got in the way of other classes. What's worse, 75% of the material on these assignments didn't have much to do with the course material. Tests are difficult: Miss one early detail and you've thrown the whole 10 mark question. Hopefully people can avoid.
She is constantly dropping hints about how smart she is and how good she is with computers. Unfortunately, she seems to be too smart for the class as her slides are full of errors and her exams only test your patience to go over and over loops. She also spelled it as "uTube". Just read the textbook and save yourself the aggravation of her classes.
Avoid at all costs!!She is the worst prof ever created!!Her assignments make absolutely no sense at all and they are impossible to figure out most of the time. Her tests are ridiculous and her slides have massive errors in it. Enough said.
She doesn't deserve all the bad things written about her here. Yes she can be a bit scatterbrained with lectures but her assignments and tests are not that difficult. She's a nice lady and you can learn a lot from her if you give her a chance.
NEVER. AGAIN.
She was ridiculous. I hardly learned anything from this course. And the things that I did learn were from the tutorials, assignments and text book. She droned on and on with the same nasally voice. I was either put to sleep or annoyed. Also her clapping to quiet us down was childish and rude. Avoid this teacher if possible.
Horrible prof! Such little help. Doesn't explain in terms that non Computer Science students can understand.
The only useful part of the course was the labs and text. Frequent mistakes on the lectures and assignments. Worked my ass off all semester to get an A, only to bomb a ridiculous final exam worth 50%. Avoid at all costs!! Also, her childish clapping drove me nuts.
I have never seen such a poorly rated professor who doesn't deserve it. Lillanne was a GREAT prof. I never programmed before and got an A. The material is easy, and her explanations really are for those who are completely new to Java. Her poor reviews do not reflect her accurately whatsoever! This class was a BREEZE.
Wow. The rating of 1.4 is like the worst I have ever seen on here. She doesn't deserve it. Really. I think she's nice because she reminds us of a kindergarten teacher, so there's something relaxing about her. Also, she knows algorithms like mergesort, which if your a CSC110 student, I bet you don't know what the heck that is. LOL.
Very childish proff in whose lectures almost no valuable information is garnered. Her clapping drives me insane and she makes so many mistakes it is infuriating.
Lectures are useless, you will not learn anything. Assignments are put together in 30 seconds and are not coherent or clear. Takes marks off of tests for things that weren't even asked to answer. Do it her way or lose marks, incredibly picky and impossible to get an A+ even if you know your stuff. Avoid at all costs.
Really bad prof. She does NOT know what she is doing. Errors are way to common and her class is useless. Try to avoid if you can! If you have her, just buy the textbook and you will be fine. Oh and the assignments look like they have been written in a different language and then pit through a translator... :S
Boring class, but that is due to the content not the prof. You learn most of the stuff in the lab, or by yourself(out of the textbook, or online). Not a bad prof by any means
I had an issue with how she marked some of her tests...questions were ambiguous or the required answer was WAY too specific. Due to some poor schedule planning, some assignments were due before the material was covered in class. She was friendly, funny, and EXTREMELY helpful if you talk to her outside of class. Her score should be higher.
If you are a beginner in csc(Java), this course will be hell. If you are a beginner, you MUST go to the graduate help center. The help center can give you WAY better understanding of the course material than at the lectures. The prof is nice and helpful during office hours. Do the difficult assignments with smart students and you will be fine!!!
Lillanne is just a pocket of sunshine. Always so helpful in class, even if you ask random questions! She has a good sense of humor, and knows how to teach! plus you get the perk of hot hot hot prof ;) highly reccomended
Meh, Could be better taught for what I think is a really important course, But she isn't a bad prof by any means....Some people can teach, some can't. Tests are fair, Assignments are odd. Labs are incredible helpful!
Coding in lecture is an issue for her (have fun). Textbook was only used once for an assignment. She makes the midterms and assignments relatively easy. Good outside of office hours. I would have immediately switched sections if I could as she was panicky and all over the place for the first two weeks (she eventually became more organised though).
She is the worst prof i have had so far!!! If you get her, get out as soon as possible!
That's pretty sad while you attend to all the lecture and tried so hard, and you will receive a F in the end. It does not matter how hard you try but you just cannot learn anything from her lecture. Almost half of the class drop it after the mid-term, I am just asking myself why I did not drop it? Worst pro ever!!!!!!!!
Positive attitude, pleasant to talk to, likes helping. A little disorganized in some lectures, sometimes makes coding mistakes in class (who wouldn't?) but corrects them quickly. Midterms are fair, she weights style moderately and does great prep. It's CSC, you'll have to do some coding on your own, can't -just- attend lectures then blame the prof.
For a computer scientist you would think she would be computer savvy... She gave 24 hour extension for assignments right before they were due for the Monday folks... Attend lectures and labs, start assignments early, do some light reading and you'll be satisfied.
Never again. She makes so many errors in class, it's hard to understand what is actually true and what is actually false. Her pseudo quizzes were a joke. Students continually corrected her solutions because they were just plain wrong. "I guess i'd accept either of these 3 answers in this 4-choices multiple choice question." Do not recommend.
Very boring speaker but friendly when face-to-face. Made it hard to pay attention in class and was slow when going through material.
The course itself was fairly easy. However, she was mostly confused and simply horrible at explaining.
Easy enough midterm and final, but very confusing lectures. She seemed unprepared when coding during lectures so spent most of the time debugging... I'm generally very motivated but had a really hard time attending her classes. She means well but is not an effective teacher
oh my god...terrible class. SO BORING! everyone dropped after the midterm (there was only one) lecture was sooo boring. she said her pseudo quizzes were just like the final but that was a TOTAL lie (the final is way harder)either nerds got high A's in this class, or lots failed. there was no in between. if you fail the midterm DROP ASAP
Very disorganized and scattered. Class moves slowly due to her numerous typing errors and coding errors
She is awful, disorganized, not willing to help, slow to respond to emails, and does not care about doctor's notes or excused absences and you have to constantly bug her to update things. It's so frustrating having a professor who can't actually do the coding or even make an assignment that she doesn't have re-write 10 times before it makes sense.
The her lectures are tedious and her assignments are inconsistent with the course material. Oh and if she ever starts coding in class I suggest just leave, grab a coffee, go home, just save your self the hour of sloppy coding and compiler errors.
Does not know what she is talking about, often gets corrected by students. Assignment questions unclear/ambiguous. Slides are messy. Avoid at all costs.
Didn't seem to have a strong understanding of the material. Was constantly being corrected by students and responded to most questions with "I don't know" or "I'll look that up for next class." Avoid if possible.
She's a terrible lecturer, her assignments are unclear, and and doesn't respond to emails for simple clarifications. When spoke to her in person, she seemed confused and made promises she didn't keep. I got an A+ because I already knew the material, but it was still my least favourite class ever. I think she's a nice person, but the WORST prof.
Never replied to e-mails, assignments were unclear, didn't answer questions in class, didn't code in class because she was bad at it, talked about what we had to learn in class instead of teaching it, didn't upload some of the lecture slides. I stopped going to class so I didn't get a good mark but she was horrible when i did go to class.
Painfully boring and useless lectures. She would often write a lot of code, then have to go over it all again because she messed up somewhere. Little helpful material provided, not enough to complete assignments. Avoid if possible.
Made up her own names for already well established industry terms, making it near impossible to figure out what she meant unless you went to the class. I knew enough computer science to ace the final without attending a class prior, but looking at the overview made me worry, not knowing a near half of the material by the names she gave it.
Too hard to pass. The lecture is non-structured.
Her slides have bunch of mistakes, so it's hard to understand the stuff. Most often I don't know what she talks about. You can feel that she doesn't well prepare for her lectures. Anyways, the only way you want to learn stuff or pass the course is SELF-STUDY. I was quite interesting in the circuit things before this class, but now meh.
She describes clearly what will be on the test with a review sheet (fairly easy) & the assignments are clear and straightforward. However, lectures are completely useless, it seems although she found the slides online and is reading them for the first time. Basically a self taught course, she knows close to nothing about what she's talking about.
Doesn't know the material she is trying to teach. Constantly makes errors in class and on assignments. Comes to lectures unprepared. Doesn't answer emails. Grades inconsistently. Students drop course halfway through because of her. Worst prof I've had. Avoid at all costs.
I think Lilanne should stick to research and administration, because she is the worst CSc prof I've ever had. It's too bad because I think the course material was inherently interesting and solving the problems can be fun, but her unpreparedness, knowledge level, course materials and course structure have left me uninterested in the material.
The lectures never made sense as her slides are full of errors. Homework doesn't follow what was taught in class (because nothing was taught ever). She likes to talk to herself, so my only advice on surviving a lecture is to make a guess on how many times she will say Lillanne and bet against some friends. Overall a horrible teacher.
Loses track of her own thoughts and speaks to herself during class, asks more questions of us than she actually teaches. Would definitely not recommend
The worst professor I have ever had. Not only is she an awful teacher, but she has no idea how to even do the work herself. Her lectures are a waste of time and unfortunately the class becomes rather difficult due to her incompetence. Avoid at all costs.
Lectures are too boring to pay attention in and the exams test things that are not related to main concepts in course material. Test questions are very vague and poorly worded. Study all you want but it won't prepare you for the multitude of curveballs she throws on the exams. Best to get the textbook as it will be your only lifeline.
Absolutely terrible. Avoid at all costs. Don't think its possible to have a worse prof.
Lillanne specializes in spending entire 80 minute lectures teaching absolutely nothing. When I saw her rating on here I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and take her course anyway, and I have regretted that decision since the first lecture. Expect long, confusing, un-prepped, and overall broken code examples that take up 50% of class
i took csc 115 in spring 2013, but it appears her teaching hasn't changed much. i remember this class was absolutely TERRIBLE. majority of the lecture was just her trying to figure out her own code!!!! she was so rude when i went to office hours and her assignments (i found) were so hard to understand if you didn't have the text. useless lectures
Tests are hard. She couldn't even get the right answers when she would go over them after the fact. Gets extremely lost and confused in lectures. Makes you feel stupid if you go to her for help. Avoid at all costs.
Loses her train of thought in class. Constantly making errors in her lectures. Tough grader. Avoid at all costs
Pretty much a useless prof. Doesn't seem to prepare ahead of time and makes constant mistakes in lecture. It is easier to read her slides than listen to her speak. Labs are also a nightmare, she asks for way too much so it is rare anyone gets done. Tests aren't too hard, but prepare to learn the material on your own.
She doesnt proof read anything. There were mistakes in lectures, mistakes in assignments, and mistakes in answer keys. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Gave assignments on material we hadn't even learned yet for every single assignment. She gets lost in her lectures, her slides are useless, and she makes mistakes in class consistently. Lectures are spent with students correcting her. I've even had about 5 emails ignored by her in my time at school. AVOID this prof AT ALL COSTS.
Makes countless mistakes in lectures. Very hard to pay attention in class as she spends a lot of her time correcting herself or wondering where she went wrong. Makes assignments really long and difficult. Office hours are usually filled with 20 or more students circling her asking questions. Avoid this prof NO MATTER WHAT
I was inspired to promptly drop the class, and I have never looked back. Happened ten minutes ago and I've never experienced happiness until these last few blissful sans Lillanne minutes. If you want a prof that scolds herself in class and is generally confused, would recommend Ms. Jackson.
Nice lady, but mentioned she has dislexia so it can get a little confusing in class. Otherwise she knows her stuff and the assignments at first glance look hard but something similar to the solution is always lurking in her incredibly detailed lecture slides that summarize the textbook. Hard to absorb so much info in lecture, better to read on own.
Lectures are hard to follow and explain hardly anything. Slides used in lecture are full of mistakes. She gives assignments without having taught the prerequisites to complete them.
Absolute garbage prof. Unclear and confused about her own material when teaching.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS -- GO TO CAMOSUN IF YOU NEED THIS COURSE AND HAVE TO TAKE IT WITH HER. Assignments and lectures are both unclear and awful.
Lilanne is a very nice lady and from my understanding very bright as well. Having this said her teaching methods are horrendous. Most of her lectures are spent making corrections on her slides. She spent so much time correcting her own work that I found it almost impossible to stay mentally engaged for an entire lecture -AVOID AT ALL COSTS-
Dont take this class with her. Lectures are somewhat useless, you end up learning how to do everything in weekly labs. My Fridays were terrible because I was stuck doing her weekly assignments that she teaches us how to complete halfway through the week. This class ruined my semester. Avoid if you arent a csc major
Constantly talking to herself, slides and assignments are full of mistakes, watching her attempt to code in front of the class is agonising. Mostly have to learn out of the textbook. Definitely would not recommend.
Not as bad as others say. You definitely can't go to lecture looking to take notes. If you go to lecture and just listen she has some good insight and shares her thought process. She makes a lot of mistakes but it offers insight into mistakes you might make yourself. Very assignment heavy.
Sweet lady, but I would never take a course with her again. Had an assignment due where we were supposed to hand in our progress, then she'd give us feedback on what to improve and whatnot, then after we'd hand in our final version of the assignment. We never got our feedback. For someone struggling in her class that would have been very helpful
She's is a very nice person but a terrible lecturer and teacher. She teaches as though you have expansive knowledge of java already. The labs and assignments are worth nothing in terms of weighting in your grade and the midterms/final are 100 x harder than the assignments, which she never teaches anyways! Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Awful teacher who really does not know what she is talking about. You really have to depend on the textbook because her lectures and power points are useless. Midterms were scaled multiple times, as was the final due to low grades. Assignments were poorly graded. Class average was ridiculously low. Would not recommend this course with her.
Manages to make a relatively simple course complicated through her tangent-heavy lectures, constant self-dialogue, and cloudy criteria. Refuses to touch on topics not in her slides during lecture. Rarely covers the material that's addressed in assignments, so there's groups in the lab on weekends trying to figure how to complete the assignments.
I don't think she knows how to teach students, but, thankfully, she did not make the tests too hard. Most people can pass. So I pretty much learned the course by myself.
Mistakes were made
Possibly the worst prof of all time. Was not prepared for lectures; she would make edits to slides during the class, and consistently make multiple errors while coding during class, which would take almost half of the class to fix. Talked to herself a lot, and would refer to herself in the third person which made lectures very confusing. DONT TAKE
Her lectures are often confusing and not conducive to taking notes; be prepared to teach yourself from the textbook. Tests & assignments are fair but require some work.
LillAnne is rude in office hours (not to mention unhelpful and chronically late). She understands the material less than the majority of the class, and note-taking is impossible. But don't worry! If you have questions she refuses to email students back and ignores the connex chat until a few hours before each exam. Save yourself the headache.
I was really afraid before I take this course but it turns out really good. Lillanne does a much much better job in CSC355 than CSC230! She is really helpful and has a lot of office hours before exams. She is knowledgeable and very proficient about the material.
Worst teacher ive ever had. Does not know how to teach and is very unprepared for each and every lecture. Do not recommend at all. Always talks in third person and sometimes has no idea what she is doing in class. Again, do not recommend.
The worst professor I've had all semester. She's very disrespectful to students in her office hours, can't communicate her thoughts clearly during lectures, and has unforgiving marking schemes for her assignments. Avoid if you can.
It's kind of sad how bad this teacher is. It's more sad that she is teaching a high level programming language and out of every java lecturer SHE has to the be one to do it! Would seriously not recommend, she does a horrible job at explaining the course and ruins the fun of programming. Overall she seems like a nice person. But horrible teacher :(
Has no idea what she's doing
She has no idea what she's doing, Take the class with Bill Bird
It's tragic that with the wealth of knowledge within the ECS compartment of UVIC that one of the fundamental classes for beginners is taught by Lillanne Jackson . The other reviews leave no exaggeration with regards to how disorganized she is. Seems like she's comfortable with making countless mistakes in lectures as well as midterms. Good luck.
I got 0/2 in the first assignment because she used a bot to mark our code. I was wrong because I missed one single space. We debugged her code for her in the middle of a lecture after it didn't run.
Lillanne is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Her classes are completely unnecessary, the textbook is the only thing you need to pass the course. Lillanne will spend half of an entire lecture trying to debug some code for a one off example. She refers to herself in the third person and during exams will start yelling at people.
Boring lecture, hard to follow in class, talks to herself In The third person which I find hilarious. Doesnt explain things very well during office hours. Would definitely not recommend if you can avoid this prof.
Terrible teacher, at least 3 mistakes per class, corrected by her students, doesn't explain what she screwed up, useless lectures, covers minimal material in class, not clear at all, assignments weekly, you're better off teaching yourself to program if this is not required for you. Expect this class to be hell if you have never programmed before.
Worst prof I've ever had, make many mistakes while trying to code in class. For someone who's never programmed before, I find the lectures useless. Her lectures cover little content and have to read the textbook for more details. Tests are hard. It's frustrating that she's the only one that teaches this course for this term.
Do not take if you are a varsity athlete. She does not accommodate for missing midterms for games. Overall terrible prof. Should be fired. tried to rate her 0 but website wouldn't let me.
I am new to programming, and have learned absolutely nothing from her. We have a good textbook, otherwise I would be screwed. Her marking scheme is quite unethical: all assignments marked by computer and you get 0 if you add an extra space or tab or capital letter. Exams involve idiotically pedantic code that no one would ever write. RUN AWAY!!!
Supposedly the very first introductory course to Computer Science, but she gives CSC355 assignments. People with 0 prior experience to programming (the majority of us) will find it extremely difficult. I was initially very excited to starting programming, now I'm unmotivated and uninspired. @uvic, why is she still here...
if you miss a space, name the assignment wrong, or make some other inconsequential error she'll give you a 0/10 and refuse to regrade it because "if i have to regrade yours i'll have to do it for everyone" even though she uses a bot to grade everything. anyway she's not a good programmer and can't teach. take this class with someone else
Avoid at all costs. Besides her occasional bonus marks on tests, I wouldnt recommend her at all. She can be rude at times and not helpful.
Avoid at all costs. She makes multiple mistakes in class and often doesnt know how to fix the errors in her own code. Her assignment grading sceme sets students up for failure and does not accurately test a students knowledge of programming. I was excited about this course but her course has deterred me from future CSC courses.
I once asked her for help in office hours and she said "This is CSC 110. You clearly didn't come to class or read the textbook if you're asking this". I did, which is why I went to her office hours only to be belittled for asking for help. She is not fair in marking - she is CONSISTENT in applying a poor marking scheme to assignments and midterms.
Don't take her class if you can avoid it. She was unable to trace code I brought to her during office hours, saying that she's better at Java then Python - how does this excuse answer my question or help in any way for the current course and question at hand? She is abrupt and unwilling to support students through a course she has made difficult.
Just finished her final exam and there were multiple typos for essential portions of code. She also yells at students and her fellow invigilators during the exam. She yelled at one invigilator for 3 minutes during the exam in the middle of the gym, distracting everyone around them. She truly isn't meant to teach, avoid at all costs!!
I have never been more demotivated in my life. Went to office hours to get help and she was unhelpful with a bad attitude. Lectures and tests are unclear with endless typos and mistakes. 11/10 recommend to stay away. If only I could rate a 0
on my way to class, I never looked both ways before crossing the street because I wanted to get hit before making it to her class.
Please do yourself a favour. Do not take 230 with her. I had to learn everything on my own.
Made me change my major, not because of the material (which I liked). Came to her office hours to get some explanation on my poorly graded assignment (no feedback despite it working perfectly in the tester) and she said "thats not how you do it and your wasting my time, pay more attention next time" even though there was nothing written.
LillAnne genuinely wants us all to get a good grade. I went to her office hours and regularly asked her questions. She was helpful and provided grades for trying and understanding the concepts. She is readily accessible and provides the solutions to the prelabs and assignments if you have attempted it and want to correct them (free 100%).
Pretty boring class with little value, but hey... it's uvic
Totally disorganized, mistakes in slides, mistakes in demos, mistakes in assignment specifications, etc. etc. etc. Marks exams really hard, looks for opportunities to take marks off. Takes a week to respond to an emails... so frustrating. I would never ever recommend any class with this prof. She should stick to administration.
Spent half the lectures fixing her own code and understands the material less than many of the first year students. Thank god for stackoverflow.
"I'll post it today after class" with some 10 days later , constant errors in slides, slips in explanations, unfriendly manners, unnecessary childish. I stopped visiting lectures eventually and had to study myself. I almost cried since I love digital circuits but will take audit with next available prof For your own dear sake, avoid her class
If you're wondering what disorganized means: basing assignment/exam questions on pseudocode that is irredeemably broken, reusing an exam written for a 1.5h class which we had to write in 50 minutes, or confusing herself in the middle of an explanation. I am left wondering if this class was just created to satirize the UVic CS experience.
Get ready to read ALOT! She is very disorganized. She almost always confuses herself during the lecture. Sometimes it feels like she didn't even review her note before giving the lecture. She will skip over the PowerPoint slides then go back multiple times; it just a mess. Also, She gave us a 75 minutes midterm in 50 minutes class!
just avoid her
THE. WORST. AVOID AT ALL COST. Completely inconsistent where some classes are a total waste of time and others she will give you examples exactly from the exam. Zero people skills. I would rather graduate 4 months later than endure this prof.
Just to give you an idea of how disorganize she is. Two weeks ago she mentioned that she will post the final exam topics and what we should expect in the final exam. The final exam is in less than two days and Im still waiting for her post lol.
The assignments for 230 with her were pretty easy, Mostly being online quizes where u can check your answers.. she is SUPER disorganized. I would think that after teaching the class 300 times u wouldn't have errors in your slides¿ But I guess not???? Also Literally mid exam rn and she just told us it wasn't happening til the next day???? Like wut??
She has ZERO people skills, two PhDs!, but zero people skills. Also, she is very disorganized. and doesn't respond to emails
Honestly, the most disorganized professor in the Computer Science department. Very rude to students, if you go and ask for help she is going to belittle you about you don't know anything. If you want to actually learn and have a helpful professor Dr. Zastre is a better choice over Lillanne.
I feel like some of the reviews are too harsh for Lillanne. I remember reading somewhere that she had issues with memory and it was a legitimate medical condition (not trying to reveal medical history, only trying to UNDERSTAND). I think Lillanne is quite kind and personable towards her students and upon reminder, she is a responsible professor.
One lab and two-three quizzes due each week Sunday. Each lab/quiz takes upwards of two hours. Deadlines lie. Each week, we meet with the TA 1 on 1 to do a quizlike question to prove we know what we're doing on Friday or Monday (despite quizzes being due Sunday). If you fail on 2+ weeks, you lose 10% from total quiz grade.
Worst proffessor ever
in this course, the only teaching that happens is the occasional time when u teach her
Lillanne is scattered on a good day, taking this course online made it even worse. The assigned quizzes often don't match up with what's being taught in lecture, and she doesn't give any sort of practice material for the tests (which are very different from the labs and quizzes).
She is an an experienced prof so her tests are fair. Its true she is pretty unorganized(inconsistent deadlines), but as long as you follow the deadline on course space you will be fine.
I'm very surprised to see professor Jackson's rating on here after taking her CSC355 class, it was my favorite class I've taken thus far at UVic, she couldn't have made the material more interesting.
Mandatory readings and quizzes every weekend does not relate a lot to lecture materials, In the lecture, she is very disorganized, often make minor mistakes and confuse students. It's safe to say she doesnt prepare much for lecture.
One of the most awful profs I've ever had at uvic
She's had literally 20 years to get all the errors out of her slides but we're still 3 chapters behind the weekly quizzes bc she constantly wastes entire lectures fixing her own algebra mistakes. It sucks bc this class could've been really fun but she's totally ruining it with terrible teaching, irrelevant assignments, and tedious outdated labs
Controversially, I like Lillanne. All you have to is go to class, pay attention, and do your homework. There were a lot of grievances about her midterm, but I found it extremely fair, tested on questions similar to those on the slides. She's a quirky lady, but I think if you do the bare minimum, show up and do your work, you'll learn a lot from her
All I want to do after I got my grade is to go to her office hour and tell her she can and must do better on learning and understanding her own material better next time
