She was very interesting and related the material to real life. She gave articles to read for homework and discussed them in class. She wasn't hard because she was easy to learn from. You get alot from this class!!!

Very Very Good! and insightful teacher but the tests were kinda of hard. You have to apply the material you learned to real life concepts so you must study. This is not a rote memorization class so beware this is NOT a easy A.

She is very into what she is teaching. She can be highly critical of those that don't participate. Since she grades participation I am ok with that policy. Her tests are deep, and apply the material to real life. Not an easy class, but not too hard either. I would take her again.

She's arrogant b/c of her PhD but still a good person - wants her students to get as much out of it as she does. It IS NOT all about class participation - i never spoke in class but wrote good essays and I got a high A. Do talk to her on a personal level, you'll see the softer kind side of her - I'd take her again!

Dr. Downes teaches a great class that really opened my eyes. If you want a GOOD education, take Sociology (SYG2000). If you want to stay closed-minded, you won't like this class. She is highly educated and gives very interesting lectures and discussions.

I have taken her for 3 courses (just finished 3) and would take her for another if I hadn't graduated. I am challenged by her knowlege and teaching style. She makes you think, and isn't that what education is about? If you don't like to be intellectually challenged, stay away. If you are a genuine student, take her for more than one course.

I found her very organized and clear as a bell, and I also found Dr. Downes to be very balanced in her presentation of topics-- just as well balanced as the text she choose

I took Dr. Downes’ Intro during Fast Track A expecting it to be boring. I actually enjoyed the class! Very interesting things are happening in this class. You learn about all types of things that involve the nation and world. She is an AWESOME teacher, however be certain to complete all content with dedication and study all content.101

I 1st signed up for this course during the spring, but was intimidated by all the content including with the course and dropped it. I decided to take it over the summer instead. I'm glad I did. Very interesting class and you actually have to use your brain to succeed. She provides you everything you need to succeed. Don't be intimated at 1st glance

Dr. D's online course is well-designed, with all material organized for success. I will take another class from this prof. Good feedback. Dr. D cares about students. Text, lectures, and assignments are very interesting--will make you think! I definitely will take a second course from Dr. Downes, perhaps social psychology or psychology.

Social Problems with Dr. Downs was a great experience. She grades fair but strict. Assignments, including videos, are very interersting- was well worth my time. You must read the text and attend class, but the book is very useful and interesting. I will take Dr. Downs again next term.

I really enjoyed Professor Downes class, it may seem overwhelming at first but if you ask her she'll be more than happy to stick around and help you with any questions you may have. You have to be able to participate in class discussion and study well for the quizzes, the book makes it fun to learn though.

She is a great teacher who responds to emails quickly and thoroughly. There aren't that many assignments, but the quizzes are very difficult. However she does give you a ton of information to study from, so if you don't pass it would be your own fault. Some required videos were inappropriate and had language.

I took both SYG 2000 & 2010 online with Professor Downes. The courses are relatively easy as long as you do the readings, the discussion posts, and study for the testsquizzes. I would recommend taking this course.

This class and professor was amazing. At first, I thought it would be too much work. All the work was well worth it. I learned useful information and now am more informed about society. Dr. Downes class in Social Problems uses text and linked streamed videos, plus lectures. Discussion topics rock! Very interesting and useful course. I find that I understand global and national social problems from both sociological and political viewpoints. I will take another of Dr. Downes classes if I can fit it in.

The class honestly is not that hard. She goes over everything you need to know to pass and makes class interesting. Professor Downes is honestly my favorite professor, and it is not because we agree on everything (We definitely don't). She really cares about her students and will do anything for you to pass. I strongly recommend her!

I got thrown into Professors Downes' 6-week class the day before it began. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, by all of the instructions, but it was just her being as thorough as possible. Somehow, I missed quite a few quizzes on MySocLab (which is the only annoying part about the course) and she reached out to me and helped save my grade.

Dr. Downes is a very caring teacher. She is readily available through email and she is very good about responding in a timely manner. She is very thorough with her lectures, if you follow her lectures and use the excercises in the online software you will pass. She is also very good at keep grades posted!

Some of the work she assigns isn't graded, but it will still appear on the tests. Assignments were usually reading from the textbook, posting a discussion about it, and taking quizzes. There was one paper that required a movie. She gives great feedback to help you improve your work.

I took General Psych fast track online with Dr. Downes. It was just easy busy work and a few discussions. A lot of reading, but very easy. I can't speak for her on campus classes, but Dr. Downes was extremely available, fair, and helpful online.

She's definitely very caring of her students, but she brings her political viewpoints into her lectures way too much. Even while teaching the material she will talk poorly about conservative views and highly of liberal views. She's very good about making sure you have everything you need to pass her class so just pay attention and ask questions.

She is a great teacher and understand certain things in life come up, she gives ALOT of bonus essays to help you boost your grade. She is very interesting to listen to her lectures. Basically if you follow all her rules you have an easy A. The only way to fail this class is if you don't participate, or do what is asked.

Prof. Downes does not sign much work, about 1-3 assignments a week. Although there is not much work, tests are a bit challenging. YOU MUST read all materials, listen to all lectures, and do some additional research to pass the tests. Overall, you will pass if you are down to work hard, and enjoy the topic of sociology/history.

Professor Downes is definitely one of my top favorite professors at Polk State. She takes the time to really let you learn the material and has more than enough of extra material to be sure you understand it completely. Participation is key to passing this class, ask questions and give more feedback than what is asked and you will surely pass!

I took the fast track version of SGY2010. It was a lot of reading but as long as you read the material and take notes youll do just fine. The textbook used is unbelievably biased though. So if youre highly conservative you might want to think twice before choosing this professor. Overall I would take her again I liked the weekly ritual.

I took a fast track class from professor Downes in Social Problems and I loved it! This is a fast track course so make sure you stay on top of the assignments but everything with her class is very straight forward. She is also very helpful. I emailed her in regards to future classes and she replied with a very informative answer. Take her!!!

This is my 3rd class that I have taken from Professor Downes. I cannot say enough how wonderful she is. Her instructions are clear, she cares deeply about her students, and unless you completely do not participate or do your work, you cannot fail. Take the time to read her lectures! Professor Downes is an absolute angel. She really wants to make sure that you understand the material and is committed to your learning. Teacher grades pretty tough, and sometimes her instructions of what is expected is not that clear so sometimes I got points removed for simple errors. You will need to read through the chapters and do the work to pass.

I took sociology for summer B and it was really interesting! I was worried about it being a compressed course, but all the assignments were achievable. Teacher offers many extra credit opportunities and responds to emails quickly. Would recommend.
