Lily's friendly and willing to help. Though the exams are a bit hard (the 2nd midterm), grades turn out to be okay. She always shows infants' videos in class, which to me, is quite funny. At least she tried hard to make boring things looks interesting. Great one!
Lily's a great professor! She's still fairly new, but she's definitely better than some veteran profs. Lectures are clear and straightforward, but pretty heavily textbook based. First midterm was easy. Second was more difficult. And the final was VERY casepaper based. Research proposal was relatively simple. Overall, excellent prof.
By far the worst psych prof I have ever had at UBC! Her exams are designed to be tricky (a lot of all of the above, none of the above, a and b, type questions). A huge research proposal that had nothing to do with what we were learning. So many assignmentstests it would be three or more weeks before we got anything back.
It's always interesting to sit in her lectures. She's very straightforward and makes lectures a little more fun by talking about her experiences with children.
She is favorite at UBC so far! She's got a passion for child psychology and everything she teaches is interesting. Her slides are great because there amazing to study from and are well organised. She's young so she understands what its like to be a student and doesn't overload you with course work. Great prof, know the stuff and you'll pass.
She's very thorough with her lectures, and assigned readings are interesting. She made her expectations clear, and the class interesting. The class consisted of raising a virtual child, and 5 question sets that went with that, 3 tests worth 20% each and a research pamphlet worth 20%. As long as you study and follow guidelines you'll do find.
Excellent prof. Lecture slides are very well organized and she makes it extremely clear what you need to know for the exams. Midterms (2) and final are generally questions directly from her lecture slides, but she throws in a handful that are things she elaborated on in class (but were not written on the slides) and things from the readings.
Scales down. Is a tough marker because she tries to stay within scaling rules - however, she tends to aim for the low end of what scaling allows (eg. upper level psyc class can be 66ish to 70ish - she chooses to stick to 66) Doesn't scale up even when class average is 63. She's nice, but I wouldn't take class with her again.
Detail-oriented, but class material isn't hard. No textbook; lecture slides and article readings. Take some notes and you'll do just fine. Awesome breakdown too: 20% for the exams, one on pamphlet which is marked somewhat fairly and raising a virtual child (easy marks if you answer the questions and refer to lecture slides when doing)
Easy material, but weird irrelevant test questions. Prepare to learn about simple topics then be tested on random aspects of course material that do not matter to your learning whatsoever-"What was the name of the child's father in this particular study?" Scales high marks up and low marks down (so grades are FARTHER apart, not toward the mean)
Clear communicator with lectures. Extremely fair and open grading. Respect her authority as she speaks and you will be fine. Open to feedback and receptive to feedback. Provides her teaching materials for review throughout.
She is very knowledgeable and passionate on the topic matter. She draws on great examples and interesting studies. Test are very difficult, and readings must be completed in order to do well. There were 5 assignments, 1 pamphlet project and 2 midterms and a final. Was very clear when I went to her for help. I would definitely take her class again!
This class was interesting, but the final and the quizzes were super hard. Very hard marking on the written work, and assignments. Go to class, you learn the most in lecture. She really cares about the topic, but it's a harder course than it needs to be.
Homework is subjective, answering questions directly results in mediocre marks. Tests are based off of lecture material and psychological studies, but questions are formatted as to make it as difficult as possible (at least two of these in 30% of questions: a+b: all of the above, none of the above, two of the above) Do not expect high marks.
Good teacher! Nice person!
Lillian is a great professor at UBC! I enjoyed her class, she makes all the topics quite interesting. Homework includes raising a virtual child and answering in depth questions about them, however I feel like these are easy marks. Exams were fair, not too difficult. As long as you do your readings and attend lectures you will ace this course!
She is really AMAZING! She is really passionate about the things she teaches and she is very friendly. Pay attention in class and read the book, and you'll be safe. I would definitely take her class again!
Lectures are a complete waste of time and the information on her slides are beyond useless. There is no point in going to her lectures because she encourages students to ask questions and half of the class time tend to be spent on answering questions totally unrelated to the course. That aside, everything she teaches can be found in the textbook.
Lillian is a solid prof. If you attend class and follow learning objectives, doing well on her tests in more than possible. The only issue I had with the class was the assignments. They are marked very hard and Designing a Toy was a lotttttt of work for only 15%. (significantly brought down my grade) Cumulative final exam is also unfortunate...
Lillian is indeed a very nice professor at UBC as she is very patient when questions are asked in either inside or outside of class hours. It is also great to attend classes taught by such a positive prof. Keep it up! However, the exams are made extraordinarily hard as the materials are too easy to be tested straight out of it's content.
I normally do very well on PSYC courses, but this course really brought down my GPA (and i'm in 4th year). She is hands down the worst professor I have ever taken a class with at UBC. Super heavy content. Cumulative final and test questions always deviate from actual course material as she tries to make you "apply your knowledge." Not recommended.
she is a pretty nice professor, her lectures are really interesting and professional, and she is really nice, easy-going, patience and if you want to ask her questions, she would always explain carefully and detailed. But it does not mean that you would take high score in her class, to be honest, you need to be very hard work and review carefully.
A very dedicated prof who's very approachable and patient. She gives passionate lectures for three hours in an evening class without resting. However, she answers many stupid questions and left less time for the content matters, so get ready to read. No matter how hard you try, you are still probably not going to get an A. Super tough on grading.
I wish I'd been told the final is cumulative, and I would definitely not take this course. If you don't care about the cumulative final, she is nice, the lecture is straightforward, and you can tell she loves kids. TAs are tough, and two assignments brought down my grade.
She is a nice professor, but you do need to spend plenty of time on reviewing and previewing. Two TAs are tough, and they are hard graders. In addition, the average mark for her psych class is incredibly low, and she won't scale too much.
Lillian is my favourite prof at UBC. She is so passionate and inspirational! She's super approachable, and her lectures are always engaging and relevant.
I personally found her to be one of the better profs in the psych department. Super easy to follow and clear lectures, if you attend them and take notes you should do fine. Exams can be challenging yes, but that goes for any other 300-level psych course. Also very approachable and caring when I went to talk to her in person.
Lily is a great lecturer. I've taken 2 classes of hers now and I love her teaching style. She's entertaining and you can tell she loves what she teaches. She is good a dumbing down material for me lol GREAT PROF and decent material, but the the tests are so hard. You really gotta know your stuff! two midterms and the final is cumulative.
Learnt a lot. Very interesting. Clear lectures. Very accessible. Shes a hard worker.
Her teaching style and grading criteria is very straightforward and often collaborated with the class (which makes it feel very fair). She cares about her students doing well. Tests are not too difficult but she grades projects/papers very harshly. But if you come to her for help, she's very accessible and understanding. Highly recommend !
One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken- highly recommend. 5 mini-assignments (20% total), 2 midterms, final, and a pamphlet assignment Lots of components, but lectures are super interesting and grading criteria and topics are partly up to students. Lily is also super enthusiastic, helpful, and zooms through stuff quickly. Great class
PSYC102 WAS A GREAT CLASS!!
Lily is an amazing professor. She's a clear, enthusiastic lecturer and she really cares about her students. The course content is super interesting, and your mark comes from small assignments (raising a virtual child), a project, and tests. You can definitely do well if you're willing to study and put in effort. Would absolutely recommend!
She is phenomenal! Tests are very hard, explaining the MCQs, also the SA are all application question. That said, no other prof will set you up for learning and critical thought as she will. Although I wish she posted just one version of ppts (final draft) in one go so we didn't have to waste money reprinting. And she does't give many prac ques!
She's really tough. All questions are application questions even the multiple choice ones and she will not give any prac exams or set of questions, maybe 1 or 2 each chapter. Cumulative exams for this content heavy course, on top of that vague questioning diminished my interest in class. She is a nice person but I won't take her again!!!
She is a really tough. The exam questions are all application questions, which means that you will have to think of each one deeply. Although the lectures are really interesting, they are all really easy content compared to her exams so it's necessary to read the textbook.
Lily is an amazing lecturer. She is very passionate about psychology (especially developmental psych), and explained every topic in a very clear way. Even in a 3 hour summer course, I was never bored. She knows how to split things up and keep you engaged.
The opposite of Lecture Heavy! No matter the time crunch (I had her for a summer session course), Lily went through lectures and the course material at a steady pace so we had tons of time to process and understand information in class. Perfect balance of assignments and tests. Engaging and friendly, basically the best structured course Ive taken.
Very engaging lecturer. very nice. responds to emails quickly. first midterm was hard. Mostly application type questions. You have to think for the exams but this may be good too. I learned a lot from her class and enjoyed reading the journal articles.
I absolutely love this teacher!!! she makes me feel like a HUMAN BEING instead of just a number like every other teacher. She is empathetic, caring, and SET US UP FOR SUCCESS! She created an amazing midterm study guide, I followed it exactly, and there were no surprises on the exam! She proves great lectures with interaction, every prof shouldlearn
Lily is a very caring prof no doubt, however, she is very vague during lectures aka she doesn't dive into the textbook material that much. she barely covers the surface yet in her exams she expects us to apply our knowledge, so exams are tough considering she doesn't explain much in class. the textbook she picks is annoying to read but we need to.
Lillian is amazing!!! She is incredibly bubbly and expressive which really makes the class fun to listen to. Considering exams are mostly about lectures, she doesn't necessarily touch on the textbook, but focusses more on giving great examples for lectures and clear explanations for assignments. Go to class, study and u will do fine!!
Lillian's lecture pdfs contain more graphs and not much description, she always posts two versions of PDFs and it is not convenient to take notes. Besides, she likes to test on contents that are not covered in class, a lot of tricky questions/answers on the exam. She does not dive into theories in class, yet the exams are analytical.
I absolutely love this prof. Amazing lecturer, fair exams, had a couple of assignments so you can really get a good grade if you want to. Her classes are engaging and her exams are based on both lectures and exams but mostly lectures. Very interesting course! Would def take it with her again!
I LOOOVED Prof May. She's very passionate about the content. Plus we got to see a lot of cute baby photos! She knows us so well that she disperses the content with videos, in-class discussions and anecdotes at the right times to bring us back. There are 3 papers and 3 exams. The grading was not bad. Also, the TAs and the Prof are so approachable.
Lillian is one of UBC's best psych lecturers, hands down. She's passionate about the courses she teaches, and very knowledgable. Her marking can appear tough at first, but its not hard to clue into her style and anticipate what the next midterm will look like. Do the readings at some point, take notes of what she says in lectures.
Lily was an amazing professor, but her exams were hard. There was also a ridiculous amount of material to cover. She asks very specific questions and puts a lot of importance on the ages of the child. Don't take this class as an easy elective.
I loved this class! Lilly is so passionate, and she kept her high energy throughout the entire semester. She's engaging about presenting the material, and she breaks up the lecture with activities, videos, and questions in a really effective way. I didn't find her too difficult.
Lily is one of the nicest and best profs I have met at UBC. She is extremely knowledgable and caring about her students. But, this is not an easy course and does not boost GPA. In order to do well, you must really understand concepts, details and ages. You should read & memorize the textbook because her exams are tricky. But a very enjoyable class!
Lily provides lots of resources for students to do well on exams and assignments. She's clearly passionate about developmental psychology, and her classes are nicely paced and organized so that there is ample time for discussion and you don't fall behind on note taking. She's also very approachable and always willing to help students out!
I took 319 & 315 with Lillian and honestly learned a lot in both classes! She is a great prof, although lectures can get a bit boring because in my opinion, there's too much discussion. I found her exams really fair and on the easier side, but you do need to go to class to do well. Study the learning objectives she gives and you'll be good to go!
She is a brilliant prof. Her lecture is interesting and meaningful. Her assignments is based on personal interview. Before the exam, she would invite her children to give students some encouragement. You might need to read textbook to get well in her course.
I found her lectures to be really interesting. She is super nice and really wants you to succeed. Tests are tough, so make sure to really read the textbook and pay attention in class (slides aren't enough). Made concepts easy to understand and I found that the things I learned really stuck with me. She is so kind and clearly enjoys lecturing.
She's one of the best professors i have even met. Her lecture is clear and easy for understanding. The quizzes are based on lectures and textbook, but they do ask for a little bit understanding of the materials.
I've taken all three of Lily's courses (302, 315, 319) and can only say great things about her. She is so empathetic and accommodating towards her students, with the only intention of wanting them to succeed. She is readily available inside and outside of class, and her lectures are well prepared, enjoyable and coherent. Definitely recommend.
She is my favorite professor ever! She is so caring and passionate about what she teaches and it shows. All her lectures are recorded and she always replies my emails within one day! Her exams are very straightforward if you do the readings and take notes from lectures. I took PSYC 302 and 315 with her and it was my best decision ever! TAKE HER!
Professor May was super caring and accommodating during the COVID pandemic. I really enjoyed how approachable she was. However, her tests were extremely hard and required a lot of processing and application. By the time you finish reading the question and need to pick an answer, the test time is almost over. Also the assignment criteria was vague.
I can't give Lily enough praise. In light of the pandemic she's been more than accommodating and has assignment extensions built into the course. As long as you watch all her recorded lecture videos, read parts of the textbook that she highlights & take the time to either attend or watch her live sessions, you're easily set for a B.
Lily is very caring and accessible. However, if you are looking for clear expectations and feedback, this is not the course for you. Her grading is extremely subjective. Tests require memorization of specific details, understanding concepts won't be enough. Lecture materials sometimes conflict with the textbook, adding another layer of difficulty.
She was the nicest professor I've had! Though not very fast at replying emails, she holds office hours 3x a week. Her async lectures are formatted like Khan Academy and her explanations are super clear. The pacing of her classes is relaxing as well. But her questions are application-based and the wording could be confusing sometimes.
One of the kindest professors I've ever had. She's incredibly compassionate and understanding. There's a lot of work -- 4 quizzes, 2 engagement portfolios, 2 assignments and a cumulative final so you have to really try. But overall worth it. You'll do well if you work hard.
Her lectures are very well- organzied, clear, and also inspirational! Even though the exams are open book, you wont get good grade unless you read the textbook and assigned readings. Accomodation policies for assignment and exams deadline were thoughtfully provided.
Lily is so wonderful! She really cares about developmental psych and it rubs off on you when you're learning it. I took 302 as a last minute course switch and ended up realizing how interested in developmental psych I am! The one drawback is that the difficulty of her exams really varied, but obviously we're all adjusting to online formatting.
Taken 2019W. Lily is really nice and has very clear expectations. I took issue with a couple of things in the text (concerning ableism) and when I contacted her about it, she seemed to genuinely care and understand; she even included an article I linked in the actual lecture. That being said, don't take this unless you're willing to work for it.
Lily is an AMAZING teacher!! Sooo engaging in her lectures, has extremely clear guidelines and is super fair with grading/testing. She cares so much about her students and their learning. So understanding and does whatever she can to accommodate which is so RARE! This was my 3rd class with her !!!
Lily is amazing, knowledgeable, and presents very current and up-to-date data in studies on media psychology. The information is presented in an unbiased way and she makes sure to have lots of evidence-based research to support the ideas. Super kind and caring, too. The tests are very tricky and require you to focus on the details, so study a lot!
Did not like her testing methods but is a good lecturer.
Absolutely loved taking Infancy with Dr. May. She's incredibly compassionate and a great, clear lecturer. Her assignments are a lot of fun (creating a baby book and interviewing moms) and the exams are totally fair and easy to study for if you put the time in. She won't ever try to trip you up and cares about everyone having a chance at an A
Loved her lectures and how she organizes her class. Super flexible with assignment deadlines. So kind and understanding. Tests are open book and she provides a useful study guide; not hard. Marks really fairly and you'll do fine as long as you follow the detailed criteria she provides. Would definitely take her again.
This is my 2nd time taking a class with Dr. May and she is absolutely lovely. Very clear lecturer who engages with her students. Extremely accommodating as well, and provides extensions whenever needed. Her exams are challenging! However, she provides other assignments to weigh against exam grades (which is uncommon in 300-lvl psych).
Prof May is amazing, caring, and a passionate lecturer for developmental psychology. She is my first professor at UBC for upper-year lvl psychology coming from a transfer student. The content of Media Socialization was eye opening - her lectures were clear, entertaining, and presented the material with lots of current research! Absolutely love LILY
I had her for 319, and she was a good professor. However, I wasn't too fond of the way she wrote her exams. Be prepared to read paragraph questions which include several names within 1 question. I felt that I was being tested on how to read block text under 50 minutes.
Lily is a fantastic prof, super flexible and clearly cares about her students. Even when I emailed her that I had been in a car accident on the morning of our midterm, she IMMEDIATELY responded to me assuring me that there were ways I could make up the marks. Most kind, friendly prof I've had at UBC - take her class!
Such an incredibly caring and engaging prof! Her lectures are straightforward, and she is so positive, engaging and passionate about dev psyc, it really made me excited about going to class! Exams are quite challenging, but fair. The content and the way its delivered is also super interesting if you want to work with kids. Definitely recommend!
I love Dr May. She's eloquent and caring and makes her class a warm place that fosters discussion. I cannot recommend her more.
dont take her
I loved Dr.May's lectures! She's super sweet, accommodating, and a really good lecturer. The content is fairly easy to understand and not too reading heavy. Her exams can be a little tricky but I think that's expected for a 300 level psyc class - nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, I'd definitely recommend her.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. May, and she has to be one of my favourite psych profs at UBC! She is a great lecturer, accommodating, and cares a lot about students' success. If you pay attention in class and study the learning objectives, you'll do well! I couldn't recommend her more!
Lillian was an AMAZING prof! She is so kind and relatable! I loved attending her lectures and found that to succeed in her course, you really have to pay attention to the learning objectives. The tests were fair!
She's fantastic. You learn so much with each lecture. There are required readings, 3 midterms, and 2 projects (which you can suggest your own grade for). In lectures, Dr. May condenses the info from the readings so you can understand better and more quickly. The course overall was structured wonderfully and was very informative. Highly recommend.
Love this woman to bits! She's so caring, so sweet, and I couldn't recommend her class enough. She does everything in her power to make the course accessible and easy to digest, and will make time for you. Amazing professor, 10/10!
She's one of the sweetest profs I've ever had at UBC, she's so caring and genuinely wishes everyone to succeed :) Her lectures are very organized (she uploads a draft of the slides before class to let students prepare ahead of time and the final version after). Clear guidelines, recorded lectures, responsive to emails and super understanding.
so so nice, one of the best profs i've had, highly recommend
one of the best psyc profs I've ever taken, so kind, makes every lecture engaging and hilarious. generous for extensions for genuine reasons and asks also if you are okay. gives detailed feedback for improvement, would take her again!!
such a kind, caring prof. provides indepth knowledge about topics. easily accessible outside of class. would recommend taking her!!
Super understanding and caring professor. She shares some details from her life as well as pictures of her children, and writes encouraging messages in exam instructions. Lectures were interesting and engaging and assignments had clear grading criteria, a detailed guideline, as well as a self-evaluation section which is taken into consideration.
The best professor I had at UBC. So passionate about her teachings, kind and she genuinely wants you to succeed. So many options for grading (projects, participation, optional papers) and all lectures are recorded.
Hands down the best class I've taken at UBC. Dr. May's lectures are amazing and I truly felt like I was learning the material rather than memorizing. Lectures were in person but also recorded so you never had to worry about missing content. You can do a short paper to lessen your midterm/final percentage, but it only counts if it boosts your grade.
If you are even a little interested in the content she teaches, I would recommend taking one of her classes. She goes out of her way to make her lectures accessible and engaging.
Great prof. highly recommend. Super smart, respectful, and actually cares about her students. 2 midterms and a final, with 2 projects that are easy marks. Her exams are some of the toughest I've had within the psyc department as the questions are only application based, so be prepared. Uses Tophat but you can opt out of participation if you want.
Caring professor who is interested to hear others' perspective and responds to emails/discussion boards consistently. Does a great job of summarizing a lot of material in a short period of time.
Makes the class very fun and engaging. Exams were harder than expected, ~25 mc with little room to make mistakes. If you take this class, remember to memorize ages.
She's one of the best professors I've ever had. She's very kind, respectful, and caring. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow, and her exams are fair and straightforward. Highly recommended!
Lily is a true sweetheart, aware of cultural sensitivities, up to date on trends and youth culture, and very authentic. However, I thought the class wasn't as valuable as I had hoped and most content was expected from being an aware media user, little surprises or takeaways for me personally. Exams are fairly easy but focus on the studies!
Amazing prof who gives great lectures! You get to choose your own grading. Exams were surprisingly tough tho, as you really need to understand the connections between the lecture content and the readings. Projects were a bit time-consuming.
