One of the best professors at Vanderbilt! Her enthusiasm is contagious (especially about volcanoes). Some of the lectures are a little more boring than others, due to the subject matter. Go to class every day!
Such a genuinely nice person who really wants her students to succeed. She does challenge us to think critically, but she's also fair and drops the lowest grades for tests, quizzes, etc. She's easily accessible outside of class and very approachable. In lecture she's interesting and enthusiastic, but not overly so,just the right amount of awesome!
Very nice teacher who is obsessed with volcanoes. The class wasn't hard, except most of the homework is busy work that takes an hour max. Three papers and an open note final. Not the most interesting subject, but Claiborne makes it bearable and shows videos a lot. Also fulfills AXLE MNS req.
Prof. Claiborne is very knowledgeable and relays information clearly and effectively. Her tests are kind of hard and unreasonable but if you keep up with the readings and attend her lectures (which are fairly interesting) you'll do fine.
/lectures are fairly interesting, but she goes way to fast to understand the information and she only lectures on half the material her tests cover. The tests are hard with trick questions and you really have to read the book for nit picky stuff. Basically if you want an "easy science" do not take this class. It is a lot of work for little reward.
Unreasonable testing standards and surprisingly demanding work outside the class (many little assignments). There is a big dissonance between the material in the book/slides and what you see on the exam. If you're looking for an easy fulfillment to your AXLE, look elsewhere.
If you're not distracted by her good looks, you're probably captivated by the amazing story about geological science that she spins with knowledgeable ease. Her smile, however, hides the layers of assignment sediments that will erode any hope that disorganized students have of passing. Get an agenda or something for her class: it's worth taking.
Very enthusiastic about her work and what she teaches, and if you are interested you will love this class. She makes very clear what is expected of students and what will be on tests. EES 101 is known to be an easy class and is quite easy IF you attend lectures and do readings. A VERY reasonable amount of work compared to other classes at Vandy.
This is a very hard class even if you study hard. She is very helpful outside of class and will always do her best to explain hard concepts.
Went into this class expecting to hate it, and it wound up being my favorite class this semester. Dr. Claiborne makes her expectations very clear, and they're very reasonable. Homework is graded for completion and effort. Quizzes are done at home and almost impossible not to make a 100 on. Tests are easy if you do hw and quizzes and go to class.
Dr. Claiborne is a very nice lady and will definitely help you out. Office hours are helpful but she is extremely unorganized and doesn't grade papers in a timely manner. Tough paper grader but easy participation points and other random assignments. The take home final was long but easy.
This is no "rocks for jocks" class. There's a lot of material to know, and she expects you to know it well; however, she'll give a lot of opportunities for you to prove what you know, and she gives opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester. If you put in the work and read, it's super interesting; but don't take this expecting an easy A
It's a good class to get rid of your math/science requirement, but it's isn't very easy. Prepare to read and do a lot of catching up before the midterm and final. Lots of easy A small assignments to boost your grade. Lab is mostly busywork, but doesn't have a lot of math or very science-y components, mostly helped me understand lecture better.
My favorite class this semester. Partly b/c her and partly b/c the content. She offers chances of xtra credits. Remember to do the readings. There are reading responses(an online quiz) every week. Just lots of works to do. If you finish, you wil be fine!
Took this class for AXLE credit and her expectations were truly ridiculous. Considering it is a 100 level course amount of details she wants you to know for exams is absurd. Her tests are not about big picture topics, but instead about picky details that are easily lost in the loads of information. She didn't curve even when class average was a 60.
Dr. Claiborne is a very good professor, she's clear on what she expects out of you. Lectures are actually interesting and grading is very fair, although homework can be kinda heavy
Take if you need a science credit and are willing to work in order to receive a good grade. The tests can be nit-picky and difficult, but extra credit and test replacement opportunities are offered. I would recommend taking the Lab with this class because it helped solidify the material. Go to office hours!
Lily Claiborne is a sweet lady, and it is obvious she is very passionate about rocks, but this class is incredibly boring. The lectures are not interesting and the exams are difficult since there is SO MUCH material on one exam. The TAs are also not good. HW will not be a grade booster for you since the TAs grade them ridiculously. :)
Do not take her if you can help it. Save yourself. Please.
This class is a great class for AXLE/EES majors. If you have a genuine interest in earth science, taking this class for AXLE may be annoying at times bc of the amount of work, but the subject is very interesting. Attending class and paying attention are key, and the lab really helps you understand content for exams, but study!! Dr. C is so sweet.
Dr. Claiborne is a great teacher, but the class structure makes it difficult to get a good grade. HW grading is variable by TA, and the tests are worded weird sometimes so it's hard to apply what you learned. Immense amount of information and homework every week, so typical of an intro class. Taking lab is supposed to be helpful, but a time commit.
Prof Claiborne genuinely cares so much about her subject and about her students. She's super sweet, but I would not take this class again. It was tedious, difficult, and boring, especially the weekly hw. Signed up thinking it would be easy- it was not. But if you're willing to put in a lot of work and you actually like geology, she's great.
Dr. Claiborne cares about her students a lot and takes an effort to know as many as she can. That being said, if you're not interested in geology this class may be dry for you. However, as long as you keep up with the weekly readings and homework as well as using the test bank she provides you should be good. Also, go to office hours!
Claiborne is a good teacher who loves earth science with a passion. She teaches well, is accessible, friendly, and overall just solid. That being said, this class sucked. It was incredibly difficult, full of tedious assignments, and just kinda boring. If you're trying to get an AXEL credit or whatever, take oceanography instead.
She is FANTASTIC. This is a fun class, workload is ok and you learn a ton! Weekly HW can be a bit tough, but good Excel experience. There's weekly HW help and extra credit. Dr. Claiborne studied teaching and puts everything in context so you see why its important. Big class but by the second or third week she had everyones name memorized.
Professor Claiborne is a really great professor who really cares about what she's teaching. Her office hours weren't the greatest, but she's really good at explaining concepts and helping out students. Very nice person. There's a good bit of reading that's kind of tedious. Weekly hw. Study the past tests if you want to do well.
I took EES 150 and the lab for AXL requirements. I liked Dr. Claiborne as a person, but her class was ridiculously difficult and time consuming. As a non-STEM major, I was hoping that geology would be manageable for me, but it was so much more work than I expected. DON'T TAKE if you want an interesting and semi-easy class for credit.
Professor Claiborne is an amazing & nice lady! She is extremely accessible and passionate about her work. However, the class is a lot of work for an intro/axle requirement. Personally don't recommend it unless you're interested in geology because it's time-consuming and full of tedious assignments. The lab was very hard!! Go to office hours!
Dr. Claiborne is one of the kindest professors I've had at Vanderbilt. She always explains things super clearly and tries to make lectures interesting and engaging. She offered extra credit, but you definitely won't need it if you do the homework and go to lectures. I would definitely recommend EES 1510 for the lab science req if you need it.
Don't take this course if you are looking for an easy A natural science course. The course is filled with dense lecturing and tedious homework that is definitely not appropriate for an introductory level natural science course. The case studies are incredibly time-consuming and the grading is tough. DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. The case studies are ridiculous. Definitely not an intro level course.
This class is significantly more work than any other lab science at Vanderbilt. There are no tests only papers, which are graded on creativity. If you are planning on taking this class get a different professor.
She's not a terrible teacher, the problem is with her assignments. She assigns six 5-page papers over the semester, plus a project and two exams. It's just an excessive amount of work. We even had a midterm two days after a paper was due. Also, she uses in class tophat questions way too much. Don't take this class with her until COVID is over.
At least this semester, this class has been a fair amount of work. She assigns bi-weekly essays that, if you pay attention in class and do some outside research, are not terrible. There is a lot more work than in previous years and it is somewhat hard to engage with the material, but it is overall not a bad science/lab to take for AXLE.
Dr. Claiborne is well liked for a reason. She has such a genuine interest in what she is teaching that it's obvious even through a computer screen. There's usually a short reading and comprehension quiz before each class, and a case study is due about every three weeks. As long as you follow the rubric the grading isn't tough.
She is a very engaging professor who really cares about her work but there is so much work in this class. If you do not pay attention in class, the assignments will be very difficult. If you do them last minute you need to put in a lot of effort to get a good grade. Very understanding and the lab is not too bad either.
Professor Claiborne is super sweet. The course material is presented at a reasonable pace. The case studies can be time-consuming but they are the only real work in the class.
Nice lady but this is the most boring class I have ever taken. Vandy please stop making people take 12-hr mandatory lab sciences. Please.
She is great and super passionate about this class which makes it engaging. Coursework without the lab is very reasonable, however the lab is super excessive in its work and instructions are unclear.
One quiz per unit that was basically a test (6 of them, drop one). They're open book and open internet. Questions are easy once you figure out what they're asking. Lots of strange drawings required, good luck figuring out how to do some of them. Prof is very passionate, but seems very overwhelmed 24/7.
main pts 1. almost 100% of the content r in online vid lectures she makes u watch b4 class. lecture itself is lowkey useless 2. unless u study a lot, the quizzes r dumb hard. lotta weird drawings n hyper-specific material 3. getting a B+ is almost a given, 30% of ur grade is watching vids basically 4. lab part is easy but super time-consuming
I loved her class. She is the best prof I've had at vandy by far
I loved this class so much. She is my favorite professor, and if you will pay attention in class it pays off.
I love Lily so much! She is super caring, and her class is really interesting. The content was great, informative without being incredibly difficult. Quizzes are easy if you pay attention and take good notes. Overall, would definitely recommend taking this class as an introduction to earth science and the EES department!
Professor Claiborne is a gem! She is very understanding and inspiring once you get to know her. If you see her class take it!
Dr. Claiborne is genuinely such a sweet professor, and she was always really easy to talk to (office hours, after class, etc.) She's also super understanding of whatever personal things students have going on. It's a bit of a tough class if ur not super interested in the material. It's easy if you put in moderate effort, though.
This class has a very arbitrary grading system when compared to previous semesters. You have no idea what your grade will be until the end of the semester, and there are 6 quizzes throughout the semester - each with an essay, submission of diagrams you worked on in class, and multiple choice. The class is very boring and takes WAY too much time.
I took this class in fall 2022 and the grading system was completely changed. It wasn't terribly hard but it was so confusing and there was sooooo much coursework. I was constently revising things and there is no clear grading system so i have no idea how well im doing in the class.
A little unorganized and office hours lines are long, but not difficult as all quizzes and tests are open note and revisions are available
Even though geology isn't my thing and continues not to be my thing after this class, Prof Claiborne is one of the most passionate professors I've had at Vanderbilt and you can tell she really cares about what she's teaching and wants people to learn. Grading system is a bit odd and homework can get tedious but I understand the reasoning behind it.
Nice professor. Really sweet lady. The class itself isnt hard material, but takes more effort than you'd expect. If you're expecting a super easy lab credit course, there are probably easier options out there.
Claiborne is super passionate about what she teaches and really cares about her students. She's a great person, but the class is so much work. Not difficult - but tedious and so much content to memorize. Grading is very unclear. EES1510 isn't an easy A. You'll probably get an A but you have to put a lot of time into it, especially lab.
Lily is the BEST. I've never thought of declaring a major in Earth and Environmental Sciences before taking this class as I found high school geography to be very boring (note: geology != geography). Lily is very caring, inspiring, and truly passionate about volcanoes, which is hot and cool. It is absolutely my favorite class in college so far.
Very awkward grading system. Crazy hard tests. VERY time consuming. If you put in all the work, then you should squeak out a good grade. Wish she made the material more fun to learn.
I loved geology with Claiborne!! She clearly cares for the content and for her students. It's a complicated grading system and you don't really have any safety until the end, but as a non-STEM major I didn't find it particularly difficult. In a lecture hall of 200, she knew my name on the first day and never forgot it. That says a lot about her.
There is not much work to do, maybe 4 hours a week max. However, you have no idea what your overall grade is until it is released. A lot of the grade is determined by graphs you make in class and the biweekly quizzes don't have any effect on your overall grade besides being the platform where you submit your graphs.
Professor Claiborne is sweet and evidently passionate about Geology. I went to office hours and understood the concepts more when she actually taught them in comparison to the pre-class videos/assignments. Be prepared for the busy work, quizzes, and if you're not really into rocks or anything geology-related, it's not the most exciting material.
Dr. Claiborne is a phenomenal professor who cares more about her students' wellbeing and learning process than any teacher I've ever met. The course follows an ungraded format, but is very structured. As long as you genuinely put in the effort, you'll do well. Good mix of videos, online sources, and textbook readings. Very intentional assignments
All lecture quizzes are participation grades, you can revise/retake lecture figures/lab quizzes, there is 1/3 of a letter grade of extra credit, and you only need an 80 on the final to get an A. However, there is a lot of out-of-class work and in-class assignments that bleed into homework. An easy A if you're willing to do work outside of class
She's very nice and the class is easy if you are in the lab. The grading criteria is not clear because she utilizes an ungrading system which means your quiz scores don't really mean anything... but it also means calculating your final score is impossible. She is also very good at explaining things in office hours
Did not upload the rubrics but just gave me a B+ for no reasons (which I did well on everything else). Never take again.
You can do revisions on almost every assignment. This class requires little real work (a decent amount of busy work). All exams are online, and open note/internet. She uses a ungrading system which makes it hard to know your final grade though. If you go to office hours the TAs will literally fix your revisions for you. Easy A.
Professor Claiborne is a gem on campus! Please take her course if you have the space to do it in your schedule. She inspired me to become an EES Major! She has a grading system that is different and does not punish you for a bad exam (you are able to revise) unlike most of the courses here at Vanderbilt. She radiates positive energy!!
Your learning will come from outside of class. In-class work is for summarizing the homework and video lectures and readings, as well as for creating your figures for each unit quiz. Six "quizzes" where you submit your figures as well as write a short essay to show your knowledge. She is caring; go to office hours, ask questions, utilize the LAs.
While Dr. Claiborne is knowledgeable and passionate, her "ungraded" system is the worst thing I have ever experienced. The grading is completely up to her, and you won't have a clue what your grade is until the end. Final was difficult because it was online. Lots of in-class assignments. Use the LAs and office hours, that's the only way to do well.
I was totally rockin w this class and I like Dr. Claiborne as a person, but our whole grade was based on a final portfolio. She gave criteria to get an A, but much of it was left to interpretation. Ex."Mostly E's on the portfolio and at least an 80% on the final" I had 15 Es and 2 Ms, scored well over 80% on the exam, but got a B+ and no feedback.
Take the class if you need a lab requirement. The bulk of your grade is basically made of a final portfolio which has submissions from throughout the year, only issue is that the grader who grades these submissions wants to see students do bad (you get to revise them though)
This class is offensively difficult and I would never again take it esp. as someone who isn't an EES Major. Professor Claiborne is very kind and knowledgable but the level of work she requires before class, during class, and after class, all throughout the week, is some of the most insanely detailed and demanding work I have ever done.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken at Vandy, due to the demanding homework and assignments. Professor Claiborne is nice but not very understanding and the level of work she requires before class, during class, and after class, all throughout the week, is some of the most obsurdly detailed and demanding work I have ever done. DO NOT TAKE!
goated professor in the sense she cares about you learning and is passionate, but the grading system is abysmal. She avoids to normal grading in an attempt to destress students but requires an absurd amount of busy work, an 85% on the final, and other mandates to get an A. Missing just one of the checklists docks you an entire letter grade
Dr Claiborne was pretty good at lecturing and has an interesting grading system. Where she failed was in grading and providing help. We had to meet a certain number of "satisfactory" grades on mini projects but it took her WEEKS to a MONTH to grade them. Her lateness was detrimental to kids like me who need certain GPAs to keep their scholarships.
Claiborne is an amazing lecturer and was easily accessible outside of class. She really wanted students to succeed in the course, and it was clearly outlined what was needed to succeed. However, the grading system overall was a bit lackluster, especially near the end but honestly, that was not entirely her fault, since things came up.
This class was frustrating in the fact that Claiborne genuinely wanted students to succeed, but did not successfully cultivate an environment with her non traditional grading that did so. I was extremely frustrated throughout the semester because it was taking weeks on end to get back grades, and I never knew what I had to fix.
the only thing that matters is final exam grade, specifications grading failed here. I had an open mind at first, genuinely excited to learn, however, grading took forever, especially if you took quizzes at SAS; was inconsistent on applications, no clear cut expectations, this left room for graders to decide what they THOUGHT was correct,
Prof Claiborne is kind and friendly. Weird grading scale. Uses a checkmark system so you have to do well enough in tests, hw, participation, and more to get an A with no overlap (so failing one will drop you to B range). Extra credit can bump you up. Claiborne also helps each students get to A. Geology itself was interesting and lectures were good.
Indeed, Dr. Claiborne cares and that she is an expert. But, she falls short in her instructional approach. Took forever to receive feedback... her ungrading system promotes inconsistency, demotivation, and unclear criteria. Hope she listens to students' feedback and does away with it. Until she does, would not recommend taking unless you have to.
The un-grading system was clear but felt unfair. It caused students to stress over grades because even exceptional work could fall short of an A if there is a simple slip-up. For example, a hard-working student scoring 84% on a final would instantly drop their grade from an A to a B, even if they exceeded expectations in many other areas.
Dr. Claiborne is a sweet person and offers much support to all her students. However, there are massive flaws in her grading system. Instead of averaging everything, she lowers your grade from an A to a B to a C due to one oversight. In addition, she takes weeks to give feedback for revision, which results in work piling up at the end of the term.
Though it's clear that Professor Claiborne cares deeply about her students and will do what she can to help them succeed, the specifications grading system felt unfair and made everything more stressful overall. You have to perform extremely well on every single assignment to get an A, but the graders are VERY picky.
She clearly cares, but EES 1510 with her left a lot to be desired. The ungraded system is a mess and makes little sense in a class like this. Content isn't difficult, but the lectures feel sporadic and each unit feels like a random collection of information. Hopefully she reflects on these reviews from the fall and makes changes.
in my opinion core-1020 was way worse than core-1010 but professor claiborne made it tolerable. the readings are longer and sometimes boring, but class discussions are helpful. if you want to talk to her about something urgent... do not email her because she will not respond. she can be scatterbrained but is caring and truly tries to help us learn.
Her Intro to Geology Lab is way too difficult for an intro course. She is absent in the class and TA's are not very helpful. Her grading criteria is unclear and overall the class is just very very annoying. She is also not very nice or helpful. Definitely try to take this course with another professor.
Worst lab I have ever taken. Extremely disorganized. She is passive aggressive. Lots of unnecessary work and no feedback. The labs that takes us +4 hours to do Every week only count for 10% of the grade. Don't take this lab with her. Choose another science. A lab that is supposed to be 1 credit hour have way more work than other science labs
