He is always willing to help!!
good teacher class lil bit hard. could be a lil more clear on somethings but he is always willing to help
He is extremely unhelpful, rude, and just plain mean. I went to his with questions and he told me that I needed to study more even after I told him that I studied for 2 weeks straight for an exam.
The Best Teacher Ever!!!! I Never Made Less Than 100 On His Tests. GREAT!!! TAKE HIM!!
This class is BORING. He puts all the information out there but it's up to you to study for the test. Chemistry isn't easy so don't expect it to be without work. The best part is the powerpoint printouts, so its easy to catch up when you miss class.

Difficult class, difficult material, thank goodness for such a good instructor.
great teacher, always willing to help
He gives you everything you need. But his test are very hard. Nothing like his notes so be preparded to study study study.
An informative, somewhat difficult class. Know the material, as the test questions are tricky, and not very much like what is on the notes.
took this class as a freshman..it's hard enough getting use to college life, but to add on to it, he is very rude and unhelpful..if you expect some one on one help, don't expect it from him
He's boring and dorky
Talk about an @$$. The most unhelpful college professor i've ever had...Avoid him at all costs. Only made a B cause i worked my butt off
too hard
Coker is so boring. It is hard to stay awake in this class, even sitting near the front. He is a nice guy though, and the tests are fairly easy and straight forward. If you pay attention, which can be hard to do, you should do fine.
Dr. Coker is great for lab and for lecture. Get him if you possibly can!
good teacher. Just follow his online notes and you should be fine.
Dr. Coker is ok. He is really boring and never curves anything, but he isn't impossible. I leaned from him and decided to take him again.
Coker's a nut, but don't slack. People like to complain that he isn't helpful, but if you take advantage of the online resources, help sessions, etc. he really helps you learn the material.
Dr. Coker has been extremely nice and extremely helpful to my chemistry class. He has office hours and he teaches, but if he's in his office and you have a question, feel free to drop by because he will try to help you.
Took Coker for both semesters. Chem 2 is definitly easier than chem 1. Not a bad teacher but the tests can be hard. If you stay up with the material and study then you will do fine
Coker teaches a 100 level Chemistry class for the students that need some prep. before jumping into Chem 111. He is a cakewalk in this class, his exams are all free form though, don't expect multiple choice, and do expect to take a quiz every single day.
Class is way too hard. He doesn't know how to teach the coursework, his tests are too short, he doesn't use a book, loves PowerPoint more than Microsoft. He's just a terrible teacher, MAN, Campbell has some bad chem teachers
grrrreeeeaaatttt
Dr. Coker is the worst teacher I have had since I have been at Campbell. I have done fine in his classes but he is the most boring individual ever. Do Not Ever take him if you don't have to. Chemistry was my favorite subject until Coker.
a good grade is possible if you study
Dr. Coker is a nice guy. I enjoyed his teaching style much better than Dr. Bryan (from CHEM-111) because you actually have online slides to copy notes onto instead of writing crap down by hand. The material is alot easier in CHEM-113 than CHEM-111.
Coker is a dork. even if u go to class its hard to pay attention bc u get soo bored. try not to take him in the morning and watch for trick questions on tests. i like his power point notes though
He is the most arrogant teacher I have ever met!I did bad in class because I just sat in class trying to figure out why this guy acts the way he does. Take Bryan if you have to take Chemistry, his tests are a little harder but he is a MUCH better teacher!
I hate him!, its hard to sit in class and not go up and just punch him in the face!! He is not helpful at all, and treats you like a dumb a$$ if you dont just know the stuff, i just cant get Chem and he just loves too rub it in! Avoid him if you can, youll know him by the smirk on his face!
Overall I think Coker is pretty good. His class is kind of boring but then again it is kind of hard to make general chemistry fun. His tests come right from his notes so it is not hard to do well in his class. Studying helps.
He inspired my love for chemistry.
He treats you like an idiot if you have questions. No extra questions on the test like Dr. Bryan does. Very hard class. Terrible teacher.
This professor should not be teaching and is a detriment to Campbell University. I've read a good portion of the other students observations and I can only confirm them as correct. He is not interested in teaching his class, his class is a forum for his huge ego and is waste of your parents money.

dr. coker is VERY BORING!! if you take his class, do not take a morning class because you'll be wishing it was over 10 mins after it started. he is very arrogant acting, and smirks at you when you have a question. kind of monotone and uninterested in teaching. take bryan instead.
Coker is a good teacher..he uses powerpoint slides so u don't have to write down stuff just only when he solves problems. His exams are fair you just need to study but they are not hard. He gives lab quizzes that count towards your grade. He does seem a bit conceited but maybe it is just confidence.
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!!
Good teacher, has printed powerpoint slides for you so you dont really have to take notes. Take Dr. Bryan if you havent had a chemistry in high school b/c he moves through the material very fast. Overall I thought we wasnt too hard.
This is a cake walk. Just go to class, right down what he puts on the board and study your powerpoint slides. Dr. Coker is very clear on what is expected and the tests are just like the notes.
I busted my butt all semester long to have an A going into the final. I thought it was easy, but he surprised me with a B. I went to ask him about it and all he would say was I got an 89. He said multiple times in class that he would curve up if you were borderline and had good attendance. Complete lie! I'll know better than to bother studying now!
Chemistry is never an easy class but if you have to take it, take Coker. He's not easy but he is the easiest of any of the chem profs. Kinda boring at times, but pretty straightforward on his tests. Pay attention in class and you will do good! Def. the best Chem professor!
Good instructor, he prepares you well for future chemistry courses. Not a Santa Claus, you earn the grade you get his class structure makes learning basic chem easy. would take other classes with him
Coker is smart - and let's you know about it. Learning from him in class is difficult but he's always willing to help if you go to his office. He doesn't require attendance if you do well.
I really like coker for basic chem. I took kesling the first time and didnt do well but coker is really helpfull and wants to see you do good. Nice caring teacher. Im taking him for basic chem 2 in the spring. Def one of the easier prof for chem
Coker is the man, psych.
Dr Coker is a brilliant man. As are the other Chemistry Professors at CU; however, he's belittling. He humors himself by making difficult exams. :>) On a personal side, Dr Coker is a nice guy. I sincerely believe he genuinely wants student to succeed. He's readily available. I think I'd recommend Dr Bryan for Chemistry.
Great teacher... but not the right teaching technique for me. I had Kesling first sem. and he worked out every problem in front of you and you worked it out with him, this was useful to me. Coker already has problems worked out and you just copy down the work, for some this might work, but I didn't know where I was getting lost until the to late.
Dr. Coker does not properly explain his problems. You copy them down, and that's it. And let's not get started about his exams....
Dr. Coker is a great teacher and is almost always available for help. When he's not, he has study sessions planned with graduate students. He helps you understand chemistry well. He may not be as easy as Bryan or Kesling but he is definitely wonderful.
Very intelligent teacher. Goes out of his way to make himself available for questions. As long as you follow his lecture and do the online homework (not just before it's due) then his tests are easily doable. You get out what you put in. If you slack off your grade goes down. Keep active and participate in clas and your grade goes up.
Hardest class ever!
Dr. Coker is a great chemistry teacher who genuinely cares about his students (and cat). His class is sort of hard but just because it's chemistry. His tests are easier than Kesling's but he prepares you more for the future also. Best chemistry teacher on campus!
Dr. Coker wasn't help in helping me learn the material. He acted as if he could care less if his student passed or failed. I would not recommend any one take his classes.
This professor gave me so much difficulty. Chemistry was so important to me in high school & I loved it so much when I came to CU, I was majoring in it. I had Bryan first semester but due to health reasons, I was subbed in for Coker second semester. I HATED IT. He speaks on a PhD level, the tests are crucial & I've since changed my major to Biology
Don't know what all these bad reviews are about. Dr. Coker made chemistry very easily understandable to me. The class is hard, after all it's chemistry, but if you put the effort in, he's more than willing to help you and he even gave me academic and career advice. All in all, a pretty good professor, granted he can be a little sarcastic.
The class is very hard but it is chemistry so you know what you're getting into. He is a good professor who really cares about his students. However, if you aren't willing to make an effort, he's not the professor for you.
Coker is a great teacher. Most of the learning can be done by yourself, if you do the OWL (online homework), since it prepares you the best. But Coker is very good at explaining and giving lecture, even if it seems tedious. Chemistry isn't a very fun subject in the first place, but Coker does his best.
Dr. Coker was helpless in learn the material. He is care less for student passed or failed.Take off the points in the test for small mistakes. He confused student sometimes. Not recommend, but sometime you don't have a choice.
Coker likes to reuse old problems and change the numbers to make sure you know how to work it. Study notes and old test you'll do fine but DO NOT just remember the answers learn the process behind it because the numbers will be different and the old choice will be an option. He also has mult. answers so keep an eye on that!
I was drowning halfway through my second semester as information kept building up and he didn't really explain things well. Take him if you like sitting around as he flips through powerpoints and you're not really learning.
Thought I was going to like him, turns out I was wrong. All he does is flip through the slides and I taught myself how to do the math. He does no examples in class and takes forever to grade tests when they're just scantron. I regret taking him as a teacher and advise anyone who does not learn by teaching themselves not to take Coker.
Great professor, would recommend him to anyone taking General Chemistry. His exams are hard, don't get me wrong, but he does a good job preparing you for them and he does care about how well his students perform
Dr. Coker is an extremely boring professor. Each lecture he puts the power points (that each student has access to before lecture) on the projector, and then reads them word for word. I would not recommend taking him. Also, he seldom works problems in class but expects them to be done perfectly on tests. Also, the final is killer!
Great professor! You definitely have to work for the grade, but if you put forth the effort, it will pay off in the end. Dr. Coker was always there to give good advice on how to excel in class and you can tell that he truly cares about his students. I must say that I have a lot of respect for this man and will always be grateful for his help.
Mixed feelings about Dr. Coker. He's probably one of the better chemistry professors at Campbell, but not outstanding. If you ask for his help, it's hard to get him to give you a straight answer. He pushes asking your SI leader instead (who couldn't teach whatsoever). Nice person, so-so professor. But if you must take chem, I would recommend him.
He reads straight from the powerpoints that you already have access to. He rarely works out a problem and he's boring to listen to.
Dr. Coker is the worst choice of a teacher. He lectures about nothing relevant to the tests, does no math examples, then expects you to ace his tests. He relies on SI to teach for him and will tell you to ask the SI leader if you ever go to him for help. He is the worst teacher, don't take him.
Lectures consist of teaching you concepts and basic math for the chapters. You really end up teaching yourself through MasteringChemistry homework no matter what professor you have for this course. Coker uses MasteringChemistry style questions on his tests so if you actually do your homework instead of googling every answer you should be golden.
Took him for Quantitative Analysis. His lectures are all pretty clear, get used to dry humor. Tests are all about application of equations he uses in lecture, so make sure to copy down his examples from the board. Be prepared for a big group project and presentation at the end of the semester where you analyze lead in water from local schools.
I recommend doing the practice questions that are in the powerpoints/textbook and actually doing your homework. His tests are a mix between math questions and concept questions. I dont think his tests are that hard as long as you study. As long as you remember how to do the math from each unit, you should do good on the final. I really enjoyed it!
I got a pleasant surprise having Dr. Coker for lab. I had heard "meh" things about him previously, so I was nervous to have him. He made lab AWESOME though. Dr. Coker was a fun guy with a great sense of humor. He helped out in any way he could during lab. He even let us play music while doing our experiments! I'd love to have him for a lecture.
Dr. Coker is very knowledgeable about chemistry and very willing to answer any questions, but his classes mainly consist of lecture and reading slides. Graded by tests and homework only
Overall Dr. Coker is a decent teacher. He is knowledgable of the subject and is very kind. He lectures straight from power points, which can be boring at some times. His tests are hard but if you know the material and study, you can do well. He grades from tests and homework only, so make sure you do the homework.
Dr. Coker is a super nice guy. His lectures are basically reading the powerpoints, but he does throw in some entertaining personal stories. He is very knowledgeable about all things Chemistry, so sometimes he can be difficult to follow. If you complete the online homework (without looking up the answers) and attend SI you will be golden!
In my opinion, he does not teach the way chemistry should be taught. I am a visual learner, and I do well in math-based courses when problems are worked out and explained in front of me. Dr. Coker does not teach in this style in my opinion.
Basically, teach yourself. I did not learn anything, I would not recommend it to anyone. His teaching style is boring and insufficient. I learn by example and practice and all he did was read and talk.He lectured as if we already knew what he was talking about. For chem100 he gave us a useless handbook that did not do anything.
Had professor Coker from CHEM 100 after not ever having a chemistry class before. I was very nervous going in and the pace of the class was going to be. At first it can be overwhelming but just stay on top of things and DON'T get behind also USE the textbook. The exam questions are asked the same way as the textbook questions.
I took this class the spring before I took the gen chems over the summer. After acing prep chem, gen chem 1 was a breeze. Just remember that your first chem class is often the hardest. Excel in it and actually learn the material so that the next one will be that much easier. Dr. Coker wants to prepare you for upcoming challenges. Let him!
Dr. Coker talks a lot about preparing students for science-based grad school, so he is not going to coddle you. He is, however, very knowledgeable and encouraging and he will be very helpful if he sees that you have aptitude and are putting in the effort. Taking 113 over the summer is always a bit rough, but Dr. Coker made it very doable.
Don't do it, not worth the difficulty of the class. He thinks his is the only class you'll be taking in the whole semester and expects you to treat it that way. Hours of homework daily, you teach yourself, and he does not prepare you. Don't do it.
Dr.Coker is very difficult. This has been extremely difficult for someone who did not have to take chemistry in high school. He expects you to have a Ph.D. in chemistry while he seldom goes over any work and just talks through the slides (that all students have access to before every class). He's a nice guy but has a lamentable way of teaching.
Absolutely loved Dr. Coker. He was fantastic in lecture and in lab. Is very clear in what he expects out of you as a student. Goes over the basics in lecture, expects you to learn other content from the textbooks. Very lenient with lab notebooks. Tests can be challenging if you aren't prepared. He can be a harsh grader on tests and homework.
I love that he allows us to view the recored lecture instead of attending class. His exams are pretty straight forward and tutoring helped with knowing what to expect, the final exam (he doesn't make it) is a beast. It's more similar to the harder questions on the hw so make note of that.
Dr. Coker's CHEM 111 Class is not a general chemistry class as you'd think it is. The content of the class has a heavy influence on topics such as Organic Chemistry and Pharmacy. If you're not a Health Sciences Major, consider taking CHEM 111 somewhere else. If you're up for the class, be ready to teach yourself.
Dr. Coker is a caring guy and wants you to do well. However, his lectures are incredibly boring and it's pretty hard to get a good grade on the exams without studying hours a day and for multiple days in a row. Is it possible to get a passing grade? yes. But don't expect an A.
He is the most amazing professor I've had at Campbell. I'm a Pharm Sci major and his teaching style is perfect for serious science majors. He is the most knowledgeable and agreeable professor I've experienced. His lectures are incredibly entertaining for a subject like chem. He explains everything thoroughly. Highly recommend him over Dr. Reynolds.
amazing
Dr. Coker was great. Difficult, but very kind. He wants you to succeed. There is lots of homework, and the tests are difficult. I failed every test of his except for one and still passed the class. Go to his office hours and go over past tests/homework. The lectures were engaging. Would recommend him highly. Don't listen to bad reviews.
Coker reads off of the PowerPoint and does not explain things well. He will read the math off the slides and use a cheat sheet. He assigns a ridiculous amount of homework. He gave us over 60 Hw assignments before the first day of class. Extra credit is given in tests that are multiple choice. I have to teach myself through YouTube.
The quizzes have little to no impact on your final grade. The professor tends to overcomplicate even the most basic topics. Unit conversions which should be one of the more straightforward and confidence-building parts of the course are made unnecessarily difficult. Don't take this class hoping to get a strong start in chemistry.
Dr.Coker often just read off the powerpoints during class, so yes you could have skipped and been fine, but the techniques he used to solve the chemistry problem were usually overcomplicated for no reason. As long as you make decent grades on your hw and your exams youll be fine. But i would not recommend the class.
Dr. Coker tends to overcomplicate simple topics. His PPTs are wordy and while he doesn't read straight from them, he doesn't put in effort to simplify them. Prepare for at-home quizzes everyday. He will help you if you go to office hours or open any quizzes you missed which shows that he wants you to succeed, but lacks to show this during lecture.
Dr. Coker is a good professor. He is really straightforward, he clarifies questions in class only if you ask. We had quizzes everyday except for Saturdays (3 to 4 questions) I failed just one test, I didn't manage my time well and that was on me. Practice is the KEY. The book we had was wonderful you'll see similar problems on test from the book.
