If you participate and study you'll do well. His tests are just his worksheets.
Nice guy, mannersims are funny, class is easy, he basically gives you the test.
Kinda boring, but really easy. Checks attendance about once every other week. If you do the review sheets, then you've basically got the test in your hands. 100%avg
hard to understand, doesn't explain to much in class, basicly assumes you know mterial. wouldn't take ever again
worst teacher...can't understand what he says...contradicts himself...doesn't speak english...doesn't allow opinions on things...unclear on a question on the test and wouldn't care to answer...never take him again, he should not be teaching!!!!
Hsrd to uderstand him. Not an easy professor.
very nice. sweet. funny. smart. ask him q's he will be happy to answer. accent is so cute! review sheets exactly like tests. EASY. take him! i tok him for math for el. teachers 2 bc i loved him for 1!!
Mat 107, if you approach him he'll help you, however the dude cant speak english well, hard to understand, hard work, also when you ask to explain stuff with missing a thousand steps, DONT SKIP STEPS, and still skips steps. Stay Away
great teacher. best class I've ever taken. will do everything within his power to ensure that everyone passes. great sense of humor. constantly cracking himself up. wish I could take him for more classes.
His tests are exactly the same as his review sheets. Great personality, knows his math.
Very EASY if you keep up with the EASY homework and do the EASY review sheets so you you'll do good on the EASY tests. Don't be afriad to ask questions in class. I plan to take him agian.
Best math teacher ever. He's passionate about math and it's evident in his teaching. Do the review sheets, they're basically the test. This is my second class with him and I'm expecting another easy A.
So good, I never do good in Math, but I got an A- in this class, Provides examples that are interesting and relevant- I would recommend him to anyone. Do the homework and review sheets and you should be more than ok
Funny teacher, very quiet at first then springs to life and its hilarious. Takes attendance once in a while, goes over homework which is good. Tests are basically handed to you, but he's hard to understand in class or when you ask questions.
All I know is that He's got to be better at this than Milliman, he doesn't shake. I guess I can stop holding my breath...I got a much better teacher and one who mants me to feeeel the math. CAN'T WAIT!
dothe review sheets and you are guaranteed a good grade on the test. He gives you review sheets about 2 days before the test and they are the exact format as the exam and he reviews over them also. sometimes hard to understand though.
If you suck at math take this guy. Summer is the best time. His review sheets are the same as the test just the numbers are switched around. Funny guy, very amusing. If you cant pass any math course with this professor, you are just plain stupid.
Good professor and very helpful, he explained things very well and is probably one of if not the best math teachers at this school. His accent could be a bit confusing at times, overall I would take him again. Pay attention to the review sheets he gives you b/c they mirror his tests
He tries to teach but he just can't; I ended up learning everything on my own from the book. He is very knowledgable of the material but just can't communicate it. He is a nice man and is funny though.
knows a lot, but has trouble teaching it to students, gives tons of homework, tests are ok, but i can be tough to get a A
Lin Tan is the man! His class was easy. He was very funny with his "1st and Goal" and "That is so yesterday." The review sheets were almost identical to the test. Actually enjoyed getting up to go to this 8am class. Take Lin Tan for your math credits!
Take Lin Tan! He is awesome. His tests are almost identical to the review sheets he gives, and he has a great sense of humor! His analogies can be a bit quirky, but overall, he is a straight shooter. Always willing to ask questions, if you are hung up on something, just keep asking! Curves are ridiculous in the most favorable way! :)
awful! Can't teach and makes jokes to cover it. You'll pass his class since he curves and basically doesn't care but don't expect to actually learn anything.
What a great teacher. Professor Tan is always such a huge help. His explainations in class can make anyone understand the material. Take a class with him and you will not be dissapointed. Tests on review sheet mirror the actual tests.
Does not know what teaching is nor knows how to really teach. Everyday just came into class and answered questions. I would not recommend for anyone to take.
Does not explain information clearly as he skips steps when doing problems and dosent explain. Test are identical to review sheets so just understand those problems. If you ask questions he makes you feel like it was a dumb question.
Explains things very well. Do the homework, review sheets, and ask questions and you will pass easily. Tests mirror the review sheets.
confusing but if you do the homework, ask him questions, and do the review sheets you will be fine. The tests look exactly like teh review sheet and I think he curves too.
so weird. hard to understand. yes, test are very similar to review sheets and he curves a LITTLE bit, but his class is so frustrating because he doesnt know how to teach.
He's a hilarious man. Uses very unique ways to describe problems. Is SUPER understanding and is very reasonable. The only thing is that he gives homework before he teaches the lesson. But if you listen you'll be find. The test are just like the review problems.
When I first looked at this I was wondering WHY he had a smiley face. Sure, he's nice and all and funny.. but he cant teach, and he's very unclear.. I would NEVER EVER take anotehr class with this professor, he's awful. Plain and simple. The tests are hard because you don't know whats on them, and I don't think we got through all the material
Hard to understand. Does not teach clearly. He can be funny but thats not important in the class. Avoid his class if possible
He was extremely hard to understand, his english is not good at all. Forget about asking questions, he will just answer you with another question. Role was never taken and he didnt bother to get to know names. He rushed through the material and it was hard to stay awake in class. I recommend you get another professor for MAT 101
He is hard to understand because he rushes through the material and his accent is not that great. His test are very simpliar to the review sheet. His explainations are very unclear and he doesn't really answer questions. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO LEAVE THE CLASS WITHOUT A HEADACHE
worst teacher ever, cant understand him, he just writes things on the board and expects you to understand it and doesnt explain anything even when u ask him to, his tests are ridiculously hard and thats all u have to grade from, if theres a way to avoid him you should do it
prof. tan was nice but i do not recommend him at all your final grade is based off of 3 tests and a final he never takes role and on the last day of the semester still didn't know any ones name i would take someone else unless ur brillant in math
I thought he was brilliant. If you paid attention in high school this should be an easy A for you. He can be a little fast, but he goes by the chapters in the book. It's really helpful if you read the chapter ahead of class. He makes sure that everybody gets it. Easy grader as well. Love him and would take him again.
HE IS A MATHERMATICAL GENIUS BUT ALSO A TERRIBLE TEACHER... HE DIDNT TEACH IN GRADUAL STEPS BUT RATHER GIANT LEAPS... TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR OR DONT TAKE THE CLASS AT ALL!!!!!!!!
He is a brilliant, yet difficult professor. The class requires a good amount of work on your part because he does go off on tangents. The course grade was based off of 3 exams but he grades on a class curve. Great teacher, funny, and amazingly knowledgeable!
I thought he was good he would crack jokes that wasnt funny but because he was laughping hard it made it funny. Very helpful I orig. got a C+ I told him I needed atleast a B- he let me do xtra credit.. He's very kind
Lin is one of the sweetest professors I've ever met! He truly wants his students to do well.
Dr. Tan is incredibly intelligent and eager to teach math. Because he has a slight accent, it is difficult to understand him sometimes but his class is very routine. If you pay attention, ask questions, do your homework, and the review problems before a test, you will do fine. Plus, he can be rather funny at times and is a very sweet person.
He is so nice and excited every class at 8 am. he curves everything (84 and up is an A) he is very understanding and patient with frequent questions (even it there the same ones over again) he gives extra credit often ! He just wants everyone to succeddd . final exam is A PIECE OF CAKE
Hes probably the smartest guy in the math department. He teaches it and if you dont understand it he will show it in a few other ways so that you do. Gives some extra credit. Because of the blizzards we didnt have the 3rd exam and teh final was open note! Im taking him this semester for history of math, and hes still the same good teacher.
He is ridiculous at math. He can calculate two numbers in his head as if he was a calculator. Tests are really easy, and the classes are fun to attend. He teaches well enough for you to understand how to solve the problem in hand. Has a slight accent, but I think it adds to his personality.
Lin tan is such a sweet professor as long as you don't mind his corny jokes. He makes sure you understand the material completely if you ask questions. Study guides are basically the tests. buy the book he teaches from it every day! easy A.
He is such a nice guy. He can be wierd at times and tells a LOT of corney jokes but he means well. If you do the practice test there is no way you cant pass the actuall test because he only changes a few numbers or words.
Lin Tan is far and away the best math teacher I've ever had, bar none. He uses class time very efficiently and makes sure everyone knows the material before moving on. He's also really funny and awkwardly adorable. I'd take the class again, and I hate math.
Lin Tan is by far one of my favorite professors. He enjoys what he is teaching and always has witty humor. If you have questions he will answer them and make sure you understand. He gives homework in the textbook pretty much every class. He grades based on 3 or 4 tests, participation/attendance, and a common final. I highly recommend taking him!
Thus far Professor Tan is the least clear professor I have had. I did not enjoy his teaching style at all and found him very difficult to follow. However, he is one cool dude! Great person, bad teacher. Do lots of work on your own and you'll be fine. His tests are literally his review sheets with different numbers.
Professor Tan is super funny and makes you want to come to class. He is always willing to help and work with you unless you never come to class and are unprepared. He makes the material very simple. I would definitely take him again.
Great Professor. Throughly knows and enjoys the material. Class may drag, but he tells jokes to lighten the material, so the class is enjoyable. If you study the review sheet for the exams, you cannot fail. TAKE HIM.
Wonderful professor. Uses the book for all homework assignments. Doesn't collect homework and goes over problems you don't understand at the beginning of class. Test are exactly like the review but with different numbers. Great class.
Dr Tan is seriously the best math professor! He has such a cute sense of humor and is slightly awkward but you can't help but love all his corny jokes. As far as the material, it was super easy to learn, basic stuff. Get the textbook to do the homework problems, and you should be set. The practices for the test are exactly like the test itself.
MAT-362 is Vector Calculus at WCUPA. I was told they're actually eliminating this course. Dr. Tan is quite a talented instructor, lively and has a charming sense of humor. His depth of knowledge and intuition was phenomenal. This was an early morning class in Fall of 2013. Even if you struggled, his grading was generous.
I was nervous about this class until I met Dr. Lin Tan. He is the nicest professor I have ever had! He is a fair grader and wants all his students to do well. If you don't do good on one of your exams and go see him about a make up he will definitely give you a chance. He is also very hilarious and makes class fun!!
Professor Tan is incredibly kind and funny. He teaches slowly so people can understand and is always willing to answer questions. He assigns homework every night and never cancels class, but if you do the homework and show up then the tests are easy. His tests are the same as his review sheets.
Lin Tan is the man!! He is my favorite professor in the math department! He is super funny and he knows what he is talking about! I have taken him for MAT162, MAT 261, and MAT 331 and passed with A's! Would take him again in a heart beat!
Hes really sweet and goofy and uses ton of funny analogies to convey his idea to students. I really enjoy him as a professor, and i don't really like math. I would totally take him again.
Kinda have to teach yourself the material. He assigns homework every class but doesn't ever collect it. He really means well but because he is so smart he just assumes you know certain things. Also he has a very thick accent and broken English.
Dr. Tan is one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves mathematics, and shares the joy he experiences with his students. The material is crazy difficult, but he'll sit with you for hours on his own time until you get it. He's the BEST!!!!!
he is honestly the best professor of all time. VERY adorable, makes so many cute and innocent jokes and then laughs, but extremely intelligent. Ive taken him for calc3 and foundations of geometry. he gives you study guides and the test is almost EXACTLY the same. he even gives you the solutions to the guide before the test. BEST PROF EVER.
He is the worst professor I have ever had here at wcu. If you are good at teaching yourself material you I'll do great in this class. If you actually need to learn from him you might as well take an F. He can do any math problem but he can't teach one. i would never take him again. Doesnt give partial credit on exam which screws you over.
Prof. Tan is a sweet lady, but she is not the best professor. She makes the material more confusing than need be. Homework is online through Connect, 2 exams, and a common final. She does give some extra credit at the end of the quarter. She wasn't a terrible teacher but not the best if you don't know much about finance.
Lin Tan is the cutest little guy, BEWARE: very strong accent but understandable. The guy means well, he has never taken attendance so unless you're fine with missing homework problem reviews then don't go to class. His entire class is graded off 4 tests that he hands out and goes over a review for. I suck at math but got a decent grade. Hes not bad
Great person, funny and pretty charismatic. Not-so-great professor, be prepared to teach yourself most of the course. His class is entirely reviewing the homework so dont bother going if you know what youre doing math-wise. I suck at math and have been struggling a lot, had to get a tutor...
Lin Tan is one of the quaintest professors I've ever had. He grades on three tests but spends plenty of time reviewing in-class for it. Sure there is a lot of homework but it isn't mandatory, just like attendance. He isn't the best at answering in class questions and assumes that you have a certain level of understanding. Very enjoyable overall.
He's definitely a quiet guy and he's got an accent but despite that I've never had any problems understanding him. He's super nice and teaches the material well by including plenty of examples in class and going over homework each day in class. His few exams are preceded by study guides that are the same as the test with different numbers!
Professor Tan means well, and is always trying to crack jokes. However, he is by far the worst professor I had here at WCU. He grades based off of three exams, and if you are not good at teaching yourself all of the material I would suggest not taking him. Homeworks do not count as credit. I would spend hours watching youtube to teach myself.
Dr. Tan is nice and wants you to understand the material, but he is just not good at teaching it himself. I couldn't understand him, he wasn't great at giving notes, and he couldn't answer my questions because of the language barrier. You'll need a good tutor to pass this class.
If you can't teach yourself math and don't have a knack for it - BEWARE. If you are competent and don't have issues with the subject and need an easy A then this is the class to take. Gives Review Packets before the exams, but there are only 3 exams. That is all he grades you off of.
Professor Tan is a really friendly guy. He wants you to succeed and takes his time in going over concepts. He tells lots of corny jokes if you're into that (I am). We had 3 exams, and then one extra exam that could replace your lowest test score. The homework can be kind of heavy but it isn't graded.
Dr. Tan is one of the best math professors I've had. He provides practical, intuitive approaches to solving problems that make the material easy to understand. His tests are also very easy relative to the homework.
I respect the man, and he is incredibly smart. However I did not connect with his teaching style. He flies through problems and does not explain the concepts at all. Only grades are 3 exams. Only passed the class because of youtube.
This class gave me anxiety because he never gives clear instructions. I almost failed because he was so unhelpful. There isn't a textbook and if you ask him for help he will tell you it is your fault for not paying attention and then tell u to continue your ALEKS assignment to learn it. You pretty much have to teach yourself!!
I love Lin Tan. He is a human calculator and math genius, yet humble. He teaches well and is always willing to help. He adapted to COVID-19 well by making it very similar to what it was before. His practice exams are similar to the exam to prepare you. The course is not easy, however. He goes over HW every class. Have the courage to ask!
Definitely the worst summer class I've ever taken, maybe the worst in general. You're graded by three tests, which sucks. Each test is extremely difficult and it baffles me he thinks we can complete it within the timeframe. Lectures are hard to sit through and difficult to follow because he flies through steps, especially in an online environment.
I love Dr. Tan, he is a very smart and nice guy, he really cares about his students and will always take time to answer / go over every problem that you have. His tests were very similar to the study guide.
He has a very specific teaching style that I found myself watching youtube vids to understand concepts. There is only a few grades in the class and they are all exam grades, no hw grades. He assigns a lot of hw problems, but they aren't much help if you do not know the concepts. I say take him if you have already taken calc in high school.
His lectures were very boring, the whole time going over the homework problems. You are given homework problems from the textbook every class but he doesn't look at them or grade them. Graded off of Aleks and three exams. He is very nice and understanding, when I was having issues with work or missing class.
Super nice, wants you to do well, just pay attention
I love the guy, he makes alot of jokes, but he is not the best at explaining how to do calculus, doesnt teach the basics so you are much better off watching videos. The class is graded from 3 Tests and 2 Homeworks, the tests are made extremely hard for no reason. Only take this class if you are good at calculus, attendance is not mandatory.
Professor Tan is extremely nice and he answers problems clearly. The only downside would be that you have to pay attention in his class because if you don't you'll most likely miss something important. Pretty much-assigned hw every class but only checks a few. A week before a test he gives you practice problems with problems that are on the test
Can explain the topics well enough, however if you ask a question, he has trouble explaining it in a new way.
Love Lin Tan, he is one of the best math profs/teachers I've ever had. His tests are very similar to the study guides he gives, the homework is reviewed in class so if you end up with questions, and he is pretty good at going over all of the material. The biggest thing I noticed is that if you aren't super clear in your question its not answered.
Impossible to understand due to his heavy accent. He did not post a SINGLE grade on D2L the entire year, which made it impossible to know your grade. Also doesn't know how to work his email. The class was fast pace & if you looked away for a second, you're completely lost. He makes you feel dumb for asking questions, would not recommend whatsoever.
Taking this class was very difficult, not to mention he would yell at students for trying to ask questions when they didn't understand. He basically just writes everything on the board and doesn't explain the material. He is hard to understand and never answers emails. I will never be taking a class with him again.
Probably one of the worst professors Ive had. Unfortunately for me there was a little bit of a language barrier, it was just understand the way that he was describing a lot of the math. He got really pissed off if you asked a question even though he encouraged asking questions. Horrible at grading quickly. Extremely tough to pass good luck.
The only thing is he created were three tests and if the class and the job not doing well he would give quizzes. tried to get turing for this course and they did not give me good help he was not willing to help was very unagreeable. Whenever you want to ask a question he made a point to make you look stupid.
Its absolutely insane to me that people actually believe that hes a good professor. He was not far at all Im not sure if hes never taught this class before or not but I dont think he was ready for it. Its extremely difficult to pass and unless youre really good at calculus already dont take it
He is very rude and does not respond to emails. Does not help student try to bring their grades up and also does not explain what he is teaching. I will never be taking a class again with this professor as he also made me feel uncomfortable. Not good at teaching or being nice
Professor Tan was most definitely the worst professor I ever had. He stands in front of the board while he is going over things so you can barely see. I asked him numerous times through emails and went to his office hours for help and he did nothing. I showed up to every class and it still didn't help. His style of teaching is bad.
Never responded to an email I've written him. Not at all tech savvy. He does problems on the board from the textbook himself, without much explanation. He's Not understanding with you if your having trouble understanding the math. No extra credit or possible opportunities to bring grade up, 3 exams, and ALEKS assignments.
Honestly was not a fan of this class. Your grade is solely based on 3 quizzes, 3 tests, and a final so if you are not a good test taker, this class will not go over well for you. He also does not use D2L to put in grades so you have no idea how well you are doing throughout the semester. If you are confused on material, he does not explain it well
By far the worst math professor I've had so far. If you go to his office hours, he doesn't help you understand the problems in the textbook at all. He seems chill, but he's honestly not putting enough effort into helping his students understand the material, especially the students that are behind.
very large language barrier. moved too fast
Grade in this class is dependent ONLY on how you do on the tests. He assigns homework, but it isn't graded and is more for practice. Exams are pretty similar to the study guides he gives. I recommend taking him if you already have some understanding of calculus or are willing to teach yourself some of the material. Very friendly and funny though.
This review is specifically for freshmen. Professor Tan is not a good professor to start college off with at all. I have heard that he is good second year and third year, but not first year. He also only grades exams, and if you get a bad grade on a test, the class becomes way harder. I do not believe he gives extra credit either.
Very sweet professor but does not teach material at all. He gives out homework but it's not graded, really just for practice. The only grades are tests, so if you do bad you will struggle to pass the class. Does not explain the material and only recommend this class if you are naturally good at math and are ready to teach yourself the material.
By Far the worst professor I have had at WCU. Only gives 3 grades for your whole semester, and is so old he cannot teach. He is also so quiet you cannot hear him, and gets angry at you if you ask him questions. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS !!!!!
Professor Lin Tan was by far the worst professor I had during my freshman year. He was a terrible teacher, and was just terrible at explaining things. He made even the easiest concepts so unbelievably confusing. On multiple exams he took points off of my grade, despite me having the correct answers and work shown. Avoid this man at all costs.
I didn't take calc in hs and didn't do that well with trig, so I felt behind in learning the content. The only grades are the 3 exams and final. He assigns hw but doesn't collect/grade. His exams are pretty similar to the exam review. I think you'll be fine if you're good at trig cuz other than that the algebra is fine.
He wasn't good at explaining the material at all. If you don't understand the material reach out for help as soon as possible. He doesn't use technology at all. For your final grade each exam is worth 25% of your grade and you have no other assignments or attendance to boost your grade. He also doesn't do extra credit.
Struggles with explaining concepts; his sloppy handwriting can make it hard to read what he writes. Stands in front of the board while writing. Class was graded solely on exams, 3 regular exams and a final, each worth 25%. If you're good at teaching yourself, he may be a good choice. Conducts exam reviews in the same format as the actual exams.
He is a decent professor, however, not the best at explaining concepts if you are confused. Homework is theoretically optional, however, I would suggest doing it because it is the only self-practice you will get. Your grade is made up of 4 or 5 exams so make sure to study and go to class. Overall a decent class!
Professor Tan has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it pays off. His exams are very similar to the study guides. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for prep. Attend class, read the textbook, and you'll do well.
He's super smart, almost too smart to teach the class. He's a very nice guy but speaks quietly and moves very quickly. grade for the class is determined by four total exams each worth 25% of your final grade.
worst professer ive had at wcu. you cannot hear this man speak at all. no tech at all and he YELLS at students.
The worst professor I have had at WCU! He moves so fast and speaks so quietly you cannot hear him. If you make the slightest mistake on an exam you do not get any credit for that problem. He assigns Homework but it is not graded. The only thing he grades are tests. 3 tests including a final. If you need to take a Math Requirement. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is pretty nice, but as someone who is super bad at math I would not recommend. Professor Tan moves super fast and is hard to understand sometimes.
I've never failed a math class until now. Moves fast and can barely hear him. He's very kind, but he can be very difficult to understand and only grades tests and he doesn't always grade fairly or correct, he marked an answer wrong on my test and he corrected the same answer on my friends test and gave them the point while taking points off mine.
