Excellent professor! Great sense of humour, very understanding and easy to work with. Highly recommend her.

she's great!!!!!!!!!!!
Public Policy; It is a very demanding class; tons of reading and writing; a lot of the classmates dropped out in the begining and the ones who remained regreted for staying; not a fair grader at all...etcc
Do not take her class
So-so. You have to be interested in a course then you learn a lot. But overall nice, knowledgeable, jokes are funny. For exams you'll have to study. Taking her is not a bad idea.
Pretty laid back.. not much writing assignments. Readings are ok. Encourages participation and often splits class into groups for discussion.
She a great professor. Nots a great deal, laid back. Very clear and easy to talk to. Go to class do reading and participate( she loves that). Midterm and final is basically defining terms and an essay...and u do 1 paper. pretty simple. Definitly take her ! shes awesome
i love her
Very Knowledable. Challenges you to think critically. Helpful, friendly, very fair:you will get exactly what you earned, funny, respectful. If you participate alot and study the interesting material you will do very well. She was really great, but not easy, be prepared to get your full tuition worth. POLSC 217.49 LOVED HER!
SHE IS AN OK PROFESSOR,BUT SHE CAN GRADE VERY HARSHLY. EVEN STUDENTS WHO FOLLOW HER FROM CLASS TO CLASS HAVE TOLD ME THEY RECIEVED VERY LOW GRADES. I THINK SHE CHANGES THE ENTRIES ON THIS SITE;IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT HER GO TO THE HUNTER LIBRARY AND LOOK AT HER STUDENT EVALUATIONS. i WORKED VERY HARD TO GET A GRADE OF B+.
Good professor. Clearly provides information. Not too difficult of a class if political science is your thing.
She is useless! i never attended lecture and passed without a problem! She does nothing! her TA's do all her work for her and i HATED this class! The most boring class ever!
Good lecturer. Extremely helpful if you approach her after class. However, if you get stuck with a bad TA, as I did, your entire experience in this class is ruined. The professor was a great lecturer, but the TA decided your grade. I got a B+.
As long as you do your work and do what she asks, you're going to be fine. Her grading is not easy however it's do-able. This is not a do nothing get great grade class. You actually have to pay attention and do assignments.
Lina Newton's brilliance is the only thing that encouraged me to actually attend polsci lecture.
Never met a prof with as much contempt for her students as her. She thinks she is above lecturing, that is obvious after 1 class. Her lectures are useless in earning a good grade. She could be replaced with a staple. Staple the reading list to the assignment list and make it an internet course and stop pretending this prof is teaching us something.
took her latino politics class. can not recommend her for any class. she is very rude to students sometimes and I think she doesn't even realize it. she knows her stuff but the overall experience wasn't fun. you sort of get the impression she wants it that way. she just got tenure too. she told us 3 times.
I thought she was a good professor. Yeah she's abit tough but compared with other professors in hunter she isnt bad at all. Theres alot of reading, but hey, we're in college. Can't always be easy. Anyways, i would take her again if i could. She was nice and had office hours for help.
Newton is waay to into herself. I took Ethnic Politics but all I got was a one sided version of Latino Politics- she likes to generalize everything. Especially concerning Latinos- hey newsflash- Chicanos aren't the only latinos living in the United States! Plus, she is arrogant and condescending to students not to mention an unecessarily harsh grad
very smart, conveys ideas very well, she is a hard grader but at the same time she provides time and tons of helpful suggestions to improve your work, there is no way you can get through her class w.o reading the texts and just attending class! great profff!!!!
Excellent teacher. Organized and knowledgeable. Definitely recommended.
Don't ever take a class with this teacher if you want to major in political science because she will change your mind. I wanted to major in POLSC and one of her classes was enough to change my mind. She uses texts too much, doesn't expalin the readings, doesn't help when you ask for help, and is not at all down to earth.
Let me begin by declaring that she is the rudest person I have ever met. She is egotistical, narrow-minded and extremely unhelpful. Questions asked for assignments are impossible to answer without opinion, yet she requests that you have no opinion (except hers). If you love Political Science, she will drive you crazy and make you extremely upset.
Whatever you do, if you can avoid choosing this teacher, BY ALL MEANS DO! You see some good comments on her but if you been to her class you'll see that only about 20% of the students like her. DON'T CHOOSE HER!
Her lecture class can be helpful, but she goes through the materials really fast. She also has the tendency to ignore student's questions or brush them aside to continue with her lecture. However, her lectures do provide useful information that will be helpful to incorporate into midterms and essays.
I had her solely for lectures, not for my sections. She is clear with her lectures. I honestly found that I didn't even need to buy the coursepack for POLSC110. She's a great lecturer, but I don't know about an actual section professor. Tests were easy and to the point. Very clear and concise. Don't know her on a personal level.
i had her for lecture only, not section so i don't know how she is when it comes to that. Her lectures are pretty good though; she makes powerpoints and posts them up on blackboard too so its pretty easy. Then again, it depends who you get for your TA. Luckily, my TA was pretty easy so it wasn't that bad.
I signed up for her intro to political science/american history or whatever its called class my first semester--it was a part of my block. after attending the first two classes i dropped it and throughout the semester watched my friends in my block suffer trying to pass it. not a good intro course, do not take to fill hist req. take actual history!
I didn't like Prof. Newton during the first 3 months of class; which is probably why I didn't attend most of her lectures. I found her to be condescending and boring. However, towards the end of term, she didn't seem so bad. She IS knowledgeable even though she can't transfer that knowledge into something her students would take interest upon.
She was an amazing professor. She helped me when i needed help and is interesting! Very knowledgeable and she actually cares about the students well being. I recommend her if you are on top of your game and are willing to work hard. I will be taking another class of hers soon!.
I had to take the F for the class because I was just way behind with the writing responses. She is a very intelligent woman and wants the best for her students. I wish I had had her for discussion as well. Now I am retaking polisci and it is a horror show.
Excellent Professor
Professor Newton is amazing!!! As a freshman, I was so greatful to have her. She explained everything and always answered peoples questions. I personally loved the sudject she was teaching so the experience was great and I learned a lot. Sh posted slides on Blackboard! She just really knew how to talk and get you listening!! The class reaquires a l
She was kind of boring but very knowledgeable. She has favorites and that was obvious during lecture. I had someone else as my TA and he was great. Writing assignments are easy but the grading is difficult. Didn't love the class...didn't completely hate it. It was ok.
I had NO interest whatsoever in political science. It's a Hunter College requirement and this professor along with my TA really helped me to enjoy a subject I never thought I could. Lectures are like stand up comedy at times. Very witty and sharp professor who seems to enjoy teaching. Big lecture halls are not always ideal but she makes it work.
Don't think you'll take Professor Newton's class, and get an easy A. Her lectures may be organized and clear, which I loved, but she's a hard grader. Doable, but still a hard grader. Most of the readings in the beginning of the semester are incredibly BORING. But she has her funny moments. And don't ever be late to her class!
She is very knowledgeable but I don't like the way she speaks. It's like she is reading off the textbook. Class just puts me to sleep.
She explains difficult concepts well in class. If you listen and pay attention, you will better understand the textbook which is what all of the tests and papers are based off of. Attendance is not mandatory.
You learn A LOT in this course. Lecture isn't mandatory but it helps so much. She really breaks down the material and brings meaning to the readings. This class requires a lot of reading, and 6 papers and 3 exams(lowest drop). Challenging, but really rewarding.
She's a nice lady and I found her lectures pretty good. I only had her for lectures. I will say that one thing to watch out for is the essays. 6 of them, 5 pages. Do them, don't be like me and get a C despite your other grades being on point. Tests are essays and aren't that hard. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's not that bad.
She's a pretty good lecturer and keeps the class interesting. Always willing to help especially during her office hours. Had to read about 40 pages in the textbook each week and write 6 essays throughout the semester which was annoying. Everything is graded by the TA so hope you get a good one!
Look, there's a lot of work but it's totally worth it, you learn SO much. She's nice & a great lecturer & explains the readings in simple & easy terms. You can bring a cheat sheet for the essay exams which rocks & you only have to take 2 of the 3 exams if you did well on them. Your grade depends on the TA you get, they grade all your work.
She's a very nice professor and she has great lectures. I went into POLSC without a clue about it only for the pre-reqs and I ended up really enjoying it. Lot's a reading but it can be done in an hour with the questions it comes with. Your TA grades you, (hope you get Sari, she's amazingg) but I would take her class again!
There is a lot of work to be done, but if you put the effort, grading is very straight forward. I took the class because I need it for core requirement, but ended up truly enjoying it and only missed one lecture, which also helped for writing assignments. Lectures are not mandatory but you have to go to the section class and do the weekly homework.
Lectures not mandatory. All the grading done by your TA so if you have a good one great. Weekly reading assignments were a drag but not difficult. No in class exams, only 3 turnitin essay exams (lowest grade dropped) and a short historical paper. I got an A+ by following the rubric exactly. Super boring but very straightforward.
If you walk into the room expecting an easy A, don't take any of Professor Newton's classes. There is A LOT of reading (writing not so much). It is challenging and her classes are suited for serious students. She can help you but you have to know how to work with her. It will be SOrewarding if you do everything right. Don't ever be late to class!
Prof. Newton may be a great polisci teacher, but she was horrible at MHC. She NEVER explained the assignments, expecting us to figure them out based on the syllabus's instructions. This became a nightmare for group projects, where she would deduct points for the slightest things (which again were never explained). If you're a MHC student AVOID HER!
Prof Newton has great lectures and she is very enthusiastic about what she teaches. The majority of the work is in the discussion sections, where there is a weekly assignment and about two papers, which are not difficult, but time consuming.
She does a really good job of keeping the class entertained. Lectures are optional but they help with the weekly reading guides. There is a lot of work to be done but she offers extra credit if you miss a guide and is willing to help during office hours or after class. All work is graded by TA (hope you get Philip, honestly great). Would take again
Office hours constantly available. Lecture isn't mandatory but worth going to because often things she mentions in lecture are needed for the essays. 3 essays and reading assignments due each week, though its a lot of reading its essential to pass. Only problem are the TA's Curry wasn't the best don't take him for discussion if you want to pass
The class is not mandatory but I would say it is helpful. Discussion class meets once a week with an assignment due.( Not hard) Lectures are fine and you learn a lot about the American govt and how things work. Overall it is a good class. Had a Midterm, Final & 2 Turnitin assignments. She is a good professor.
Prof Newton is a great professor. That being said, do not take her class unless you are interested in the topic. You will have to earn your A, but it is so worth it when you get a good grade back. Always available for office hours (she even said she would face time you if you are unavailable to come in). Go to her for help, it will boost your grade
A very good professor and very accessible! My advice is to keep up with the reading! She gives articles and books as reading assignments. A very informative and interesting class . Put in a very good effort in her class and you will do well. 2 tests, a group presentation and final essay. (It may change by the time you take her)
Great professor. Very fair grader and very smart in the field of immigration.
As a lecturer she's a bit dry, but she played several movies relevant to the course that led to group discussions so it wasn't all lecture-based. Assignments sometimes need some explanation, but workload isn't that heavy for an MHC course. Flexible on grading: allowed my group to argue for a higher grade on a project. Overall, a fine prof!
Professor Newton always finds a chance to keep things funny and relatable during our lectures. Our class is about 100 people in a classroom and she always has time for questions and is really lenient when it comes to reading guide scores. Only two have to be submitted out of 4-5!
She is one of the best professors at Hunter! You don't even have to open the textbook if you just pay attention and attend her lectures. One midterm and a few reading guides about the chapter, which aren't difficult at all. She's really sweet and understanding. She does give lecture slides but they're vague. Definitely take her!
Prof. Newton is a total sweetheart and an amazing professor if you're just getting interested in Political Science. She is also really knowledgeable about immigration law, if you're interested in that. Her grading could be really tough at times, but part of that was the weird structure of our class this semester. I would definitely recommend her!
I sat in the front trying to pay attention and take good notes, however, she would talk and talk, and it is boring. She is a very nice woman, but if you aren't into learning about our U.S government, she would make you hate the topic even more. Her lecture slides are very vague, so they aren't that helpful. Reading guides are a boost, 20%.
Professor Newton was so wonderful for MHC150. Her lectures were interesting, as were any homework/major assignments. She gave clear guidelines, and excellent, helpful feedback. She even let us redo projects after receiving her comments. Only possible negative was the large amount of reading, but it was not too bad. What a spectacular professor!
this woman is my reason for getting up on mondays.
There's nothing wrong with Lina Newton but got damn this class sucks. The hyper-attempts at organization for this class make navigating the course the most unintuitive imaginable; two different blackboard sites with different info and different places to submit work, different announcements, etc. Just unbearably tedious. Easy A if u put in the work
Prof Newton was one of the sweetest professors I've ever taken. Although the course was rough on assignments and readings, she made it easy for you to get help in her office hours. Solid choice, she makes you work for your grade and if you're into racial politics it shouldn't be much of a struggle.
I really liked her. She likes participation and its easy to do because the class is interesting. Just follow the syllabus and talk to her, shes really understanding.
The best professor I ever had. Amazing lectures. TAKE HER if you are a poli sci major. Lectures are super useful and guiding, had amazing debates in lectures. Would recommend.
I will say this. She is an amazing professor. She is approachable and nice to her students. If there is a problem, approach her. She will work with you. She is very clear of what she expects from her students. She is lenient at grading. But DAMN!!! the amount of reading and writing each weak I have to do drives me insane!! why?!
Professor Newton's class was brutal. I took it as a first semester freshmen and it was the most difficult thing i ever had to do. Tons of work and hard tests but as long as you get the reading guides done and do well youll pass the class and probs get a B. Really boring though unless youre into politics... I guess.
Prof. Newton is very caring however when it comes to exams and homework she is brutal. She assigns wayyy too much work and expects you to be always be prepared and know every little detail of the reading. She REALLY makes you work for your grade. So if you're looking for an easy A this is not the class.
The class wasn't very exciting, and when CUNY implemented online-learning, she began to assign MORE work than before. If you do the readings and attend lectures, you can get an A, but for a 200-level course, it is a lot of work. She seems like a great person, but her teaching style reminds me of high school: lecture slides, reading guides, quizzes.
She is one of the best professors in the Political Science department at Hunter, so if you have the opportunity to take a class with her, I highly advise you to go for it. I took her for POLSC 317, and even though the readings were dense, the discussions in class made it worth it, and I learned so much from her.
I took her in Fall 2019, she gives us a lots of reading. But she is a nice teacher to have if you want to deep into political science lessons.
Everything was online because of current circumstances so she made voice thread lectures and you can watch them anytime you want. They were pretty good and specific. A lot of reading, but you really didn't have to. 4 reading reactions, 2 essays, quizzes for each unit but they were all fair and easy. Final was a bit too much with 120 questions 2hrs.
She's a cool individual, its just that her lecture videos were too confusing for me!
Professor Newton is a real gem! Her lectures are insanely interesting and she constantly tries to promote discussions. She is clearly an expert in her field and is very respected. This class is reading and writing heavy and your grade must be earned, she does not hand out A's lightly. She's very accessible outside of class and is super helpful!
great professor who is extremely educated on polsci. being that it was async and online, it was hard to really tell whether she could do better in an in person class. makes it clear that there are quizzes and assignments due at specific times but extremely back and forth so don't expect a break
Dr. Newton's class is interesting and she's a nice person. However, she is a very harsh grader and is very strict about things like citations and will accuse you of plagiarism if your citations are incorrect. She doesn't always explain her grades and can get tense if you challenge her. Overall she is a fine professor, just beware of how she grades
Take Professor Newton's class!!!!
I took this class online. So lectures were just recordings. They were a little long, but it was fine. The textbook was a free pdf. And usually, there is a quiz every week +1 midterm +1 final exam + 4 short writing papers. The class was great besides the exams were 70 questions in 75 mins and 100 questions in 120 mins.
She gave a big paper / project but it was a pretty easy class if u just do the the readings and follow her instructions
Many readings, some short unit writing assignments, VoiceThread lectures, midterm, final, big policy paper, and class itself was mostly discussion. While it was all do-able, Prof is very meticulous on tiny significance/definition details, which can be daunting given no notes and relatively empty slides provided. Outside fact reading was helpful.
No doubt Professor Newton is educated and knowledgeable about the topics she teaches. Please understand that being knowledgeable about the subject does not make you a great instructor. 90+ students out of the 200 or so failed the midterm or got Cs. Out of all the classes I take this one might just be the most unintuitive one, and a chore to attend.
I took this class my freshman year, the class is very boring, the amount of readings is insane. The readings were so long it was simply impossible to keep and up on top of making sure you complete other assignments for the other classes you have to take. After the midterm I simply gave up,i had to make a decision, either pass here or fail other clases
I wish I listened to the ratings posted here before. The lectures are simple but the work she gives is busy work. It is better to assign a lot of work that you can actually gain knowledge from rather than the maximum work load at a fifth grade level. She is not a pleasant person outside of class and doesn't seem to care for anyone but herself.AVOID
To put it simple, this class is extremely boring. A heavy lectured focused class with a lot of weekly assigned readings. She grades her tests harshly with no curve, and barely gives out extra credit. She seems to have no sympathy with students. Everything is online, and her lectures can deviate from the main topic. At least the papers count big.
the textbooks are hide to find and half the time you dont even know which one you neeed, the lectures are incoherent after 10 minutes and i havent really learned anything. on top of the fact that out of 200 students, 100 of them got an F on the midterm...... shes not rude but avoid if possible this is high school ap american government but worse
LITERALLY THE WORST CLASS EVER!!! the only good part was the TA. she was super sweet but there is not much that she can do. The lectures DO NOT correlate with the exams at all. IT WAS A WASTE OF MY DAMN TIME.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Her study guides are NOTHING like the Exam. Her lectures do NOT HELP when it comes to exams. Her slide are useless, they have no information on them. Class midterm average was a D and less than 1% got an A. Again, DO NOT TAKE
She's nice but man paper after paper BUT the papers are what helped me pass this class. I barely passed her midterm and final but the papers and research paper are what made me pass. Sometimes she goes too fast when teaching lectures. The TAs grade the paper so I can't really say she's a tough grader. She is alright but I wouldn't do it again.
eZ class
This class was definitely tough, had to read a chapter and do a reading guide each week. The slides are posted but are pretty minimal so you must go to the lecture if you want to learn. That being said she does curve and is overall a very sweet professor. She lectures a bit fast so maybe have a recording device or use voice typing if necessary.
One of the worst professors I have had at CUNY
Very harsh grader. The midterm and final take up 50% of your grade and it's only 2 tests. Her lectures are surface level and her tests are all based on hundreds of pages of readings. She expects you to know everything about the topic and write essays without references on the final exam. I would avoid taking this class.
Dont recommend
Avoid
I really liked this class. Professor gives weekly readings and you have to sign up to create discussion questions for one week during the semester. You have a paper assignment and a paper proposal assignment. Class normally has a lecture day and answering discussion questions day in a week. Teacher was kind to us as well.
Professor Newton's class can be challenging, but engaging with the material and using helpful study tools like Unstuck ai can really pay off. Attend lectures, read the texts, and be prepared for rigorous grading, but you'll learn a lot.
So bad. She speaks in a very discriminatory way when teaching about immigration and even her opinions are very weird. Horrible class, very boring. She scares me honestly. Dont take, its a LOTTT OF WORK
Nice, understanding but omg the class couldn't get any boring, the midterm and final is ON PAPER. I couldn't believe that. So many assignments omg, i dont have time to actually focus on other classes that actually require hours and hours of work. For a course just for requirement, its too much. Dont take it, if this isn't a part of your major.
Don't take the class if you don't have to. it's so BORING. I want to fall asleep everytime I had class and the way she speaks about immigrants and immigration is a little weird. Her opinions are also a bit weird I'm not going to lie. But please don't take the class its not worth the headache I promise you.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF.
Great class but content heavy. She assigns a response paper each week or so, but she gives a very clear grading criteria. Very accessible outside of class. Previous bad reviews are from people who didn't take initiative. This course has a lot of information, but if you pay attention in lecture, read the articles, and study the vocab, you're set.
a total dud. midterm and final were the only exams and were both hard. the final was especially hard. wouldnt rly reccomend
