Shes a good teacher there are some days where its a little boring but usually its interesting. She gives 12 response papers to do make sure you do 10 out of 12 because this will count as a test grade at the end of the semester. Overall a good teacher.
I wish I did better in her class but I did learn alot and she was very helpful.
She is NUTS! The class isn't that bad, but don't dare ask her for any help if you have trouble with an assignment. She LOVES embarassing people in front of the whole class. The class isn't that hard if you keep up with the work and study for the tests. Stay on her good side!
What should have been an interesting subject turned out to be boring, classes of lectures, and watching boring movies. towards the end of semester half the class dropped, last day of class half the class failed. If you do all 10 of the articles, and understand her complicated tests you'll do fine.
Not very clear when she's explaining something that you will need later on for a test. She is a very indecisive person. Sometimes a particular lecture could be interesting, other times we would get tedious assignments. I was so excited about this class BEFORE I met her!
Very nice lady. Great teacher. Easy class
She was ok. not very fair when it came to doing the assignments she let a girl do a paper over cause she received a zero when i asked her she said no. But the class is not hard just memorize all terminology from the book. shes very hyper.
She makes what can and should be an interesting concept boring and she does have a tendency to humiliate her students, one if you answer to many of her ? or if you don't answer them at all...She is okay. if you can find someone better take them if not...you can live with her...I've had worse educators, but I certainly had better
Her lectures are boring and lets you out early. She only allows some students to do make up work or extra credit. She teaches like she hates everyone and the topic. She will embarrass you!! I failed by a tenth of a point, and she announced it to the class. Save your money.
She's fun but can be a pain
I have a few friends that took this same teacher. they all failed by a point or two. THey took Beard-Moose and got A's. Her tests are ridiculously hard and the questions have nothing to do with the curriculum. Her classes will put you to sleep and she has a stupid laugh and an even uglier smile
VERY VERY VERY HARD !!
hard tests
very interesting class.. i like when a teacher has a passion for what they do, since they love it it makes it more interesting and fun to learn
stupid freaking teacher, she blabbles on about nothing that has to deal with the chose, does not teach you a thing and then expects you to be able to answer all her questions, tests are hard, reading material is dry and there is a lot of it
She isnt too bad. The work load is normal, read when she tells you, and write personal response papers about whatever topic you learned (1 page). The tests are kind of hard. She does let you out early a lot, but she will tell you herself that there are easier teachers that teach AN11.
This teacher sucks. She talks about her life story the whole class, and her tests are so confusing, she gets confused when we question her about the multiple choice questions. she cant even answer her own questions!!! what a horrible teacher.
The previous comments are true if you do not have any interest in anthropology. You really need to pay attantion in class or you won't have any idea what is going on. If you take notes and read the book you'll do fine on her exams; however, she does give hard tests. She always gives a chance for open discussions. I enjoyed her class and her style.
The work is not the greatest. There is a lot of reading, but the reading response papers are real simple...read the article and write a page on it..the textbook is pretty boring, the movies and the articles are interesting. She very passionate about her work which makes the discussions worth while. only take this class if you'll put the work in it.
She's a good teacher. There is work but its simple and takes two minutes to do. The reading is actually not that much for a college course but its definitely needed to do good on the tests.
Attend class & read. EASY STUFF. Response papers: DO NOT SUMMARIZE- RESPOND- and you will pass. Eccentric, very quirky (she slams the desk w/both hands when she laughs hard) but so so cute. Helpful, not terribly critical. Very charming, won me over rather quickly, and helped me find a way to pursue anthro with little effort!
As the last person mentioned, you must read and take notes to pass this class. If you dont enjoy reading or taking good notes then do not take her. I read and took good notes and will probably get an A. 3 tests which are a bit difficult, and 10 easy 1 page response papers to articles, which is an easy 25% of your grade, just dont summarize.
Loved this class. Papers were pretty easy. Tests were kind of hard but not if you studied well. definetely would recommend her. She is very passionate and makes class interesting.
She was pretty vague about the tests and didn't exactly help us prepare that much. Claimed she was trying to help our grades but many kids in the class were having difficulty. Wasn't clear on too many things. Not the worlds hardest class but be prepared to take notes and read the chapters thoroughly.
most people didn't do well, but no one did any work...i put very little effor into the class, but i did do all the reading and homeworks, if you do the work you really do get the A...i would suggest her...she does tell interesting stories
Dr Barber is convicted to her cause- instilling knowledge to a wide range of people about the study of Anthropology. I had her for Cultural anthropology.Do your work, hand in your assignments on time- you will do well. Very fair instructor.
She was an Ok teacher. I wouldn't take her again. Her tests were incredibly hard. She makes you do article summaries. I did all of them but my test scores killed my grade! If your a bad test taker don't take her class!
She is so passionate about what she does. She is very loud and animate in her teachings. I thought she was so interesting. She gives a lot of work, yes. If you are a hardworking dedicated student and listen to her in class you'll be fine. Do the readings!! Work hard and listen to her in class for notes. You'll be fine! You must be willing to work!
She is fair. 10 articles during the semister for homework. Tests are hard so do the articles as you go. Gets off topic easy. Shows a few movies. A nice woman but she could take more time reviewing for a test and she loves her job which makes the class a little better
Professor Barber is a very difficult teacher. I took her for my last semester at Suffolk and got straight A's in all of my classes except hers, which i got a C. She gives you alot of homework, tons of readings, and her lectures about the readings are a joke, they dont really help you at all when the test comes. Tests are very hard. Dont take her.
She is a difficult teacher, but she's really crazy and funny. I didn't do so well in her class. You can't really get by unless you do EVERY single reading plus studying. She gives 12 reaction papers, and I suggest you do them all. It helps your grade. She stopped taking attendance toward the end of the semester, which is cool.
ugh seriously this woman is INSane!! She honestly gave me high blood pressure. Shes upsest with anthropology to the point where she so sick of it she wont even teach! Basically you have to teach ureself by reading every chapter! Shes terrible at review and is very loud and OBNOXIOUS!!!XP
horrible. unfair. only four people in my class got above a 90 and the rest got below 60. do not take her.
She's great! Love her! Very smart, but she does have a problem communicating sometimes. I got an A and she just exempted me from the final and coming to the last few classes because I did well :) 10 Reaction Papers (1-2 pg. extremely easy), 2-3 tests (fair), and 10-14 pg. paper (very annoying) on book. I didn't take notes. Just listened and read!
don't take her because she is very hard and unfair. she is the most horrible teacher that i had.
Bad teacher! She has no patience to answer and just laughs at your questions. Does not explain things clearly. Something she explains in class is written different way on test and answer she says would be right during class would end up being wrong on test. 12 response papers are easy. I had a death in my family and she didn't care..
SHE IS WACK!!!!!!!! She sucks at communicating with her students..wants everyone to drop if you failed her first test. Which by the way her tests are really hard! Overall DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
This prof. is awful. Dont take her
She is Horrible...
Taking this course significantly lowered my GPA. I am typically a straight A student but her teaching (although I still think she is a great & interesting person) is not good and kind of lazy. She doesn't explain well and help you succeed.. very unclear.
Very hard teacher...Doesn't want to help her students succeed...do not take this professor if you have a choice..even if you a good student u will def get a bad grade in this class.
NO ONE in my class got over a 80 on ANY of the tests she gave... and she doesn't curve. The reaction papers she gives are easy, but the tests are incredibly hard. I love Anthropology, and the class discussions and readings were interesting to me, something I love learning about and I could only get a D+?! Something is not right there.
She seems crazy when you first meet her, but she loves what she's teaching and makes it interesting. As long as you do the reading and the assignments you'll do fine.
I thought she was a pretty fair teacher. As long as you pay attention, do the work, and take good notes you should be fine. Theres 12 response papers, they're easy, just do them! They really help your grade. Her test can be confusing, the majority of the class didn't do so well on them. But it's interesting stuff, the class discussions were very..
engaging. However as fun as the class was, a lot of my classmates were WAY too talkative, which is probably why a lot of people didn't do well on the tests. So heres a helpful tip: if class time is running short and the teacher still has a lot to cover, do so tell your classmates to (politely) shut their mouths. It really helps.
She loved me and i could only get a C+ in her class. I am a straight A student, so something here is not ok.
This professor was great and the class was very enjoyable. She requires you to read the textbook and do your work.. come on guys, this is college. As long as you're not a typical "suffolk student," I guarantee you will do well & love this class.
I had to WORK MY BUTT off to get a B. Very hard tests!! I got all A's at Suffolk except in her class. It's no joke.
Took her Honors section my first semester at Suffolk. She's a sweet lady, but her tests were tough! When she taught the material and you read the material in the textbook, it didn't seem so bad. But, then you see the tests and you want to run far away. Do the papers and ethnographic analysis to boost your grade!
If you want to take a class where the teacher is constantly condescending to the entire class, and young people in general, well this one is for you! Her tests are crazy, keep in mind the class is only 75 minutes long. 64 multiple choice questions and two essay questions that are a full page each. Not helpful and can't communicate well with her.
Incredibly condensending and rude to the class. Telling us we are all "screw ups" every day and blaming us for "not understanding" her assignments is no way to teach a class. 80 question test plus two essays, then goes on a rant about how 3/4 of the class fails them when we're only given one day of review. Killed my GPA because of this class.
A nice woman with an zany personality. However she tends to go off topic and not touch on all the material needed for tests.Very tough tests but you can boost your grade up again with her response papers. Would not recommend her to everyone.
absolutely awful women. I truly believe she enjoyed failing students. loves to make you feel stupid when you ask a question. never received anything below a b+ prior to this, and got a c. I would recommend switching the class or dropping it until you can take it with a different professor.
OMG just OMG! I am taking her ANT class now and i know I will definitely not do well. She is absolutely useless in explaining things. I wish I had taken the chance of dropping this class :(
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH HER!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!
Very nice teacher. She does dismiss comments that aren't aligned with her views. The midterm isn't bad. Overall an interesting class
This is the worst professor. Never take her class. Does not help clarify readings in class. Does not answer questions. Will not go over information she assigned to read for next class. Yells. DONT TAKE HER CLASS
She wants to fail her students. I have never seen a professor who actually tells the entire class to re-take the class because they are all going to fail. So, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!
Your interest in this class must be very high. You are required to read a ton of documents prior to class, and she will not be clear when assignments are due. It's all about reading, trying not to fall asleep in this class, and hoping you understand it. If you don't, maybe try to ask her for help...if you have time She doesn't use email that much.
I found this professor to be strict, but in a caring way. She does not put up with nonsense, and uses exaggerated frustration and anger to get her point across. However, I believe she genuinely cares about students. Don't show up unprepared participate willingly, do all the readings, and you'll ace the class. I learned a lot of interesting things.
She's passionate about her Anthropology class. I found her extremely fascinating. Let's get real; if you give f*ck you'll be okay. I'm not gonna lie, you do have to try. Read, ask questions, she loves that and will notice if you try. If you don't give a f*ck then steer clear because this lady will rip you a new one!
Not a bad class but you will have to put your work in and show some effort. She's pretty clear about what she's teaching, although she has a habit of randomly yelling during lecture. Response papers are easy, although her tests can be challenging.
All her writing assignments are extremely straight forward. If you pay attention the class before any of the reaction papers are do, she will tell you what she wants, verbatim. Her tests are exactly what she teaches in class, but applied. Know definitions and how to apply the concepts. If you care for your grades, should be an easy class.
I actually made an account on here so I could review Professor Barber. This woman is a down to earth, amazing teacher! She gives it to you like it is, she doesn't sugar coat anything and that was so refreshing. She expects you to do the readings because if you don't, why are you there? She's helpful and easy to talk to. Very interesting class!
Professor Barber is harsh and talks so negative about students future. She yells A LOT for no given reason and doesn't like students who disagree. Completely turned off when she told our class its impossible for anyone to get over an 80 on her tests because she builds her test like that. She has a good heart but I would never recommend her.
Went to her office hours everyday. She made me cry several times and is very nasty. If you have her, I recommend switching. She will not change your grade even if it's a few points.
She's a nice professor, and her exams are easy and understandable if you read the material and listen in class. BUT, her "grade boosting" response paper's requirements are vaguely explained on her sheet or in class. So unless you're smart, only expect a 525 on those papers. I recommend taking this with her in the summer, that when she's lenient.
Took her class for graduation. She favors students, and if they are like her, give them a free ride A (overhead a student say that) otherwise everyone else gets a B or a C. She's the reason I get panic attacks now. Her tests are hard, and you loose points on her papers if they don't fit her views. Shes a true nightmare, I'll never take her again.
Prof. Barber is pretty awesome. Expect to attend class, pay attention, take notes, get homework and study. This is not a breezy class, you will have to work for your grade just like school should be. But she is EXTREMELY interesting and knowledgeable. JUST TALK TO HER AND PARTICIPATE IN CLASS! Otherwise she will absolutely let you have it.. Warned!
Rude and irrational. If you do bad on one test she convinces you there is almost no way you will get higher than a C. Almost gloats about the fact its hard to even get an 80 on her tests. Even doing well on her papers that are impossible she claims I wouldn't do well. She revised my papers and I still didn't get perfect scores when i fixed it.
horrible professor! she completely humiliated me by yelling out in front of the whole class I was failing. She is extremely rude and doesn't care about her students. If you are not doing well in her class she doesn't encourage you to do better. If no one reads the articles for class she doesn't teach and sends everyone home.
This was the worst teacher I've ever encountered. She's not helpful, not respectable, she yells, she called the class stupid on multiple occasions and she's downright mean. Stay away from this teacher (if you can call her that) to the best of your abilities.
This woman was terrible. So judging on everything the students say to her. Everyone that has taken her class including me hated her. She is just awful.
Awful, awful teacher. Takes terrible notes, forgets what she tells the class. Won't admit mistakes. Lady is very unclear and actually admitted more then once that she forgot to mention certain things, but still didn't give the class there points back. Worst teacher I've encountered so far, anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong, trust me
Awful professor. Belittles and discourages the entire class while yelling. The material is actually very interesting and fun to read, but it isn't fun in class especially if you're not one to usually participate in class discussions. If you're confident & study for an hour a day, then take her.
Hilarious!! but hard class so be ready to study
Let's put it this way... SHE NEEDS TO BE FIRED!
She is a terrible professor and I would not recommend anyone to take her class. She offers help but when you approach her she calls you stupid and refers to the class as "a bunch of idiots" all throughout the semester. Tough grader. Seems like a nice woman but being a professor isn't meant for her.
Will put information she never talked about on tests, tests are hard. Yells a lot and is not helpful at all if you visit her office hours. If some classmates didn't read the articles she assigns, which are ridiculous, she wont go over them and then will out questions referring to the articles on the test. Dreaded going to this class for an hour
Honestly do not take this teacher. She does not respect students as human beings and will go on rants about anything; before you know it the class would end, you would learn nothing and she will put things on the test that are nowhere in the readings...
This professor is one that I strongly recommend switching out as soon as possible. She has a very nasty attitude and will have no problem saying such things like you guys shouldn't be able to vote because you're stupid. (When we were all just scared to answer her because she'll scream in your face) I was the best in the class and I still got a C
Professor Barber expects all of her students to be as intelligent as someone with years of anthropological experience. I put more time and effort into this class than my core biology and chemistry classes, and I still got a C+! (The only C on my entire transcript.) I ONLY took her because SCCC switched my professor, and I couldn't drop without a W.
This Professor is terrible! I never go by this website but when I actually did and went too see what kind of comments this lady had, they were awful and every comment was very accurate on how she is! Get her out of suffolk!!!
Tough grader for sure. You have to read a bunch! If you don't do the readings, don't take the class. She also makes you write five essays, though they aren't terribly hard. The tests aren't super hard as long as you have an understanding of the material. I didn't study, barely read the articles and got a D, so try and you'll succeed!
Horrible. Never met a professor who was so disrespectful and immature. Tells her students that they're stupid, and idiots. Isn't clear on instructions. I walk out of the class learning nothing. Do not recommend.
I was not a fan of hers, but I can say that if you are a strong writer and a weak test taker you can pass her class. I nearly failed all three tests and passed because of my paper grades with a B
Let's put it this way. I'm not even in Suffolk anymore and I still would not recommend her to any student. She completely humiliated me in class one day up to the point where I began to cry and I will never forget what she did to me.
I took this class my 1st semester of my freshmen year. Not going to lie it was a little intense at first, but for sure my favorite class. I used the text book every week since the test is straight out of it, it was the most interesting class and she is very helpful during her office hours. She is a little rough/sarcastic, but i loved the class
Terrible Professor! Very rude to her students and thinks that everyone should know as much as her on the topic. If you do not read the articles she will skip the review and call everyone in the room stupid. Averages the tests and the papers and that is your grade. After 2 absences she will automatically drop you from the class.
She gives you 5 essays to write and the topics are almost impossible unless you're an Anthropologist. If you need help writing she has office hours, but she just tells you whats wrong, not give you a reason why and send you towards failure. I got a 38 on an essay and she said "Don't feel bad it was 1 of the best in the class" How is she teaching???
By far the worst professor i've ever had. Most annoying voice, horrible lectures, and only talks about herself
Although she thinks she's funny, Prof. Barber is incredibly condescending and rude. I have NEVER had a problem with any teacher in my life, but she is just horrible. She will call people out in front of the whole class, yelling how you should just drop the class because she'll fail you anyway. DO NOT TAKE HER. (even all the A students)
Never in my life have I worked harder for a B. Prof. Barber is just plain mean. Tests are impossible, you must read the textbook for hours just to pass. At the end of the semester she gives final grades, and yells out your grade for whole class. Because of this I know she only gave out 1 A. For a class of 30!! A classmate even complained to dean.
She makes you read a bunch of articles in class and her tests are pretty challenging. Her lectures are super boring too and she can be strict with cell phone use
There is an expectation to read between the lines. This makes knowing the answer to a question impossible. This class was frustrating and very difficult. Although, I learned, the style of learning was not good. This class was the first class I considered dropping and it didn't seem to matter much. Students were encouraged to drop and just give up.
This professor was by far the worst professor I have ever taken at Suffolk. She was rude, inconsistent and just straight up mean. She is the most harsh grader I have ever encountered, especially for a entry level course. She did not help the class with any issues you have, instead she would just say to read the textbook and call us idiots. Horrible
Grades very hard and is rude sometimes to the class
I have never left a review for a professor before, let's just get that out there. Harsh grader, calls people put for attendance & grades, even under five minutes late, in front of everyone. Majority of class doesn't read the article? She won't go over any of it. I am a 3.5+ student & she gave me a C. The only grade I got below a B this past spring.
Its not hard at all just read the articles and write the papers and you will get an A. Most of it is common sense. She very clearly lays out what she expects of you. It is mind boggeling to me why people seem to think she's so unreasonable. Just because she isn't a ray of sunshine 24/7 doesnt mean shes mean. A lot of these complaints r unreasonable
Worst professor ever.... like how do you fail anthropology ??? Never take this lady
Im sitting in this class right now and just save urself and don't take it
I heard a lot of bad things about her, but I found her OK, & managed to pass her class. If you want to pass, get 50/50 on ALL papers she assigns, they help A LOT! If you are having trouble with the papers, see her! The textbook is hard, use notes online, they are easier & make more sense. She's hard, but fair. Just do this & you will pass easily!
Although it's somewhat of the first few weeks for me, I can already tell after a failing grade of "0" on a paper that I know for sure was not worthy of it let alone rightfully given by her "fair" grading. She clearly doesn't grade her papers mostly on the objective itself and mostly on either small spelling errors or depending on her mood that day.
Professor Barber was very upfront about what the class would include on the first days. She made it very clear that if you did not read you would fail. She assigned a lot of papers that were very simple and easy to get a 50/50 on. The reading was actually interesting compared to most other classes. She wants you to be in class and to do well.
Really disappointed on how this person grades. She cares more about tiny spelling errors than the entire objective of her paper assignment. She's not an English teacher and yet she complains about grammatical errors more than anything. She needs to learn how to properly grade papers based on context and what the paper asks NOT what she wants.
Do not take this teacher if you want to pass she wont drop lowest test grade. Makes fun of you when you get a wrong answer will tell everyone your grade. Give a bunch of homework. Do not take this teacher
I absolutely love this professor! She is kind, funny and so smart! There are very few exams in the class and very simple, short papers to complete. The readings are enjoyable and she goes over absolutely everything that she assigned. If you show her youre doing your work, she helps you to understand everything. She can be sarcastic, but its funny
Very nice lady and very funny her tests are hard and you NEED to read textbook to pass or at least study your notes before test she is always changing her grading criteria from semester to semester so its a risk of weather you get a good class or hard one (I had it good thankfully)
To be honest, the first few weeks of school I didn't like her. She yelled too much, called me out for missing class, and assigned too much work right away. But then I got used to her ways. She's very quirky but is very experienced in her field. READ the book, do the hw, take good notes. Boom, you get an A. You get out what you put in.
This class was honestly so rough. Not only was the material hard but the way she taught the class. Personally dealing with her, one minute she said I'm doing great in the class, and the next, she tells me that I don't have a chance of passing based on ONE test. She was very degrading and made me feel like I didn't have what it takes to succeed.
Study, do your work, partcipate and dont be late and you should be fine. She might bust your chops but shell take it easy on you if you do what youre suppose to do and take the class seriously. She likes to embarass people who are unprepared and skip/come late to class so if you do that sort of thing be prepared to get called out lol.
do yourself a favor and just don't...... don't.
Linda is a brilliant instructor. Her ability to remain unbiased as a professor and at the same time to remain open to others opinions but be engaging in an academic manner and informational is eye opening. Learning in her class is like entering a whole new realm of academic awakening. She helps you to view humanity in a truly unique way.
Made me feel like I was worth nothing when she gave me my grades the way she does it she'll have you go right in front of the class to her desk while she reads you off your grades so everyone can hear.
She's a tough grader and makes you feel extremely stupid for asking questions even when there is plenty of reason why your answers could be correct. She gets side tracked way too easily and gives barely anything to study from when it comes to tests. If you study extremely hard and ask her a lot of questions and can take a hit, she's for you
Undoubtedly one of the worst professors i've EVER had!!!!!!!! I'm more concerned for her than I am my grade. I've never seen such little power affect someone's ego so much. She doesn't actually teach students, she expects them to know the material and is angry if you don't. She doesn't know what respect or kindness is. The opposite of inspiring.
I took her class because I needed the credit for a social science so I decided to take cultural anthropology. I only sat through 3 of her classes and before I dropped it. The first class all she did was belittle and make fun of the freshmans in the class. & She gets side tracked easily. All in all do yourself a favor and just dont for your sake.
Horrible! All I can say is don't take her class. I only went to two classes before I decided to drop it. Its not worth it. She acts like its Harvard university but its Suffolk. I questioned if she was out of her mind in those first two classes. Really condescending and has heavy workload. Even in the first two classes! I did myself a favor and drop
Professor Barber is a tough professor but her class is extremely interesting and she keeps everyone laughing the entire lecture without going off topic. If you do all the reading and I mean all of them, there is no reason to do poorly. This is not an easy A! Put in the work and you'll do great. She is extremely good at what she does!
One time I mistakenly did the wrong assignment because she decided to change it in the announcements section and not the assignment section, so me and many others did the "wrong assignment". When she got back to me to let me know, she was nothing but rude, I quote "first of all, you did the wrong assignment, do you even read the announcements?"
The professor dropped me because I did the first week assignment wrong and missed the second assignment waiting for the book, counted as a two week absence, not a very understanding teacher. AVOID CLASS IF YOU CAN!
One of the most horrible professors Iv ever had i couldnt afford the textbook so I got a different version apparently the work was all wrong tried to make it up but all she told me was to drop this class she gave me a panic attack for two days straight one of the worst professors Iv ever had run
To define Linda Barber, you'll most likely be forced to tolerate her hypocrisy during assignments, emails, and her daily 'motivating' announcements that takes up half of Blackboard. In other words, she's an online professor with back-handed compliments even to those who manage to be on top of things. Btw if you're wrong, expect '...' in ur emails..
Linda messed with my homey, zero stars.
I learned way more from the students in class than miss poodle herself. Thank you
Professor Barber's class is engaging but demanding. Attend lectures, do the readings, and use Unstuck ai for extra prep - you'll get through this challenging yet rewarding course.
holy miserable worst grader in the world. wayyy to tough for just being an anthropology class. took this class to fill my schedule and ended up being the worst and hardest class i took. if youre taking this for an easy class dont even think about it.
