work load is decent. goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with anything at all. kind of mumbles.
-Hates the class, hated everything about it. I missed a 1/2 hour out of a 4 hour class for medical reasons and she dropped my grade a whole letter each time. I will never take another course with her again.
Very difficult teacher, but if you get on her good side and participate in class instead of making snide remarks, you will pass with flying colors. I got 100% in the class without even trying, and the students who were rude all failed! Be forewarned!

Great professor. I wish all professors had her passion for teaching. On the first day of class it will seem like the class is impossible, but as the class goes on you will see how easy it really is. Ask her for help with your papers, she loves to help.
This teacher is the nicest teacher ever and will work with you on anything. She is very intelligent and great to talk to.
if you have any confidence in attending a university STAY AWAY. she will rip your self-esteem to shreds. even if you are a good writer, she'll tell you that you won't make it at a university. she goes off on tangents and makes no sense. RUN!
I felt she was off in left field. For a beginning college english class she made you feel you should be an advance writer. I did not like her at all.
This class way way hard. She tore my papers to pieces...expected me to write a paper as if I got my masters in English or something. She gave me a 50% on a paper I thought I did wonderful on. NOT good. NOT a fun class. MEAN lady. TEARS everyone to shreds about every little mistake.
Not an excellent english professor, but she is not terrible either. The class is fairly easy as long as you read the stories and show up, the quizzes are easy and the papers are straight forward. There is a lot of groupwork also. Her criticisms are hard to follow, but her grading is fair. Pretty boring class, didn't learn much, but I got an easy A.
This teacher is very nice. I like the critizism. most teachers won't tell you how it really is. She does give a lot of positives on papers to. We need to know when we aren't doing well, in the long run we may want to thank her for being so hard on the grading.
I have to be honest and say that this is THE BEST PROFESSOR I have ever had. She is unbelievably helpful, and will NEVER make you feel stupid for asking dumb common sense questions like other teachers might. I recommend this professor to anyone that wants an understanding Professor to learn a WHOLE lot from.
Ms. Brender is a great teacher, who loves her job! She is always willing to help. You do have to read the stories. The papers, in my opinion, are not hard to write unless you did not read the stories. She does not lecture the whole time. She lets you work in groups on discussion guides, which makes the literature more interesting!
The teacher herself is very nice, helpful, and loves her job. The books you read can tend to be a bit boring, but once you get into them, you're good to go. If you just read the material and do your homework, you'll be fine.
I'd recommend Dr. brender to anyone!Although the readings are quite extensive, she is VERY understanding and you can tell she loves what she does. This class was great because i would have never read any of the Nobel Prize winners on my own. i.e. Anna Karenina, My Name is Red, Heart of Darkness, All the Names. Very understanding of ones needs!
I'm surprised by all the negative comments about her expectations. She was always incredibly positive about all my papers as long as it was clear I actually tried. (lots of spelling mistakes will kill, though). Was understanding when I had to come in late a few times due to my boss having a baby.
Best professor I have ever had. I took this class online over the summer in only 8 weeks and an A was very feasible. She is always available to help and truly cares about her students.
This was my first online class(8 week course) I ever took and I achieved an A. If you do all your papers on time, participate in all the group discussions, and put forth the minimal effort, then there is no reason that you should not receive an A in this class. Dr. Brender is kind but sometimes critical which will help make you a better writer.
She's a great professor. I took her class online and it was very simple, as long as you did the work you would receive full credit. She responds to email promptly. Her tests were really easy too, everything was in the books. I got an A in the class and finished it in 8 weeks. Take her.
Took this class online. As long as you did the work you got the credit. Engish is not my thing at all and I still got an A.
This teacher is great. If you get the chance always turn in your rough draft on the deadlines she gives The feed back she gives you on that will help a great deal.
Very good professor. She was very helpful and udnerstanding of everyone's writing ability. In my group I had a girl who was very controlling and a real snob and Linda Brender was able to calm down the situation. When I was sick she said stay home as long as you need to get better, she was very kidn about it. I ended up with an A-, great professor.
A rather nasty woman, unfortunately. Her email responses contain an almost stunning level of arrogance and rudeness; be wary of questioning her grading methods -- the response could be explosive. In any case, ENGL 1210 is a breeze: anyone with high school level writing ability should pass it with flying colors.
I had her online & she was horrible. She forms opinions of the students at the begin of class & your grade is based on how much you kissed her ass, basically. I read 100+ page things, for multiple assignments, and she accused me of not reading because she didn't like my sources. Each of my papers had a very clear consensous of the books required.
i hated her. whenever i'd ask a question about an asignment, she'd basically call me stupid and tell me to read the lecture again, not even touching point on my question. she makes aquasations about her students, mainly that they didn't read something they did, and they scolds them. she's too judgemental. my class was online and everyone complained
Her tests are ten questions, but they are really tricky and very easy to stumble on. I studied thoroughly for them and went over each question carefully and still did terrible on them! I guess I'm not a test taker.
I took her class online and she is one of the best teachers. I sometimes struggle with English and she made things very easy and was willing to help at all times. She makes herself available to students 24/7. I would recommend her to anyone. Loved this class!
Loved Linda! Best online class I have ever taken. She is very helpful and the assignments are fair. She gives you a chance to turn in your rough draft for comments before the paper is due. She is very pleasant to work with and even offers OPTIONAL online webinars that are very helpful and allowed me to ask questions. I got an A and would definitely recommend this class.
Easy on grading as long as you prove that you are trying and know what you're doing when it comes to writing. She is not too tough but you have to pay attention to what you're doing. ONE PAPER PER WEEK. If you are not the greatest writer, you might as well not even take the class. Her class is for students that actually payed attention to classes b
This has been the best online class I have ever taken. She gives audio feedback which is quite unique in online classes imo. Take her... make sure you do all the assignments and discussions...
Great Class. I was pretty bummed with my grade (B+) because Im an all A student. She was pretty picky on grammar, but thats her job. You must study grammar in this class. She was very helpful and I loved the audio feedback as well!
Great teacher & extremely helpful! She clearly wants her students to do well. Answers all and every question and is very encouraging. One of the best teachers i've ever had! Do all assignments as she says to get an A.
Taking online courses has its challenges. Ms. Brender however made it worth the while and a whole lot easier!!
Very helpful, and a great teaching method. It was a pleasure to be in her class.
Very respectful, helpful and professional professor. I haven't taken an English Course since high school and I was very happy with my grade.
BEST INSTRUCTOR EVER! I took this class online and learned way more than I expected! Linda is AMAZING! When you finish her class you take away the knowledge that will help you throughout college! Linda is very encouraging and kind. She is always there to help in any way. I highly recommend Linda Brender! She IS the BEST!
Great teacher! Huge confidence booster, always responded to my questions and kept me going with encouragement when I felt like giving in and dropping the class.
Lousy class. Not good for if you want a good grade
If you want an easy A, take this class. If you're actually interested in Children's Literature (future teachers) STAY AWAY. She has never been a teacher, or worked with children. She was in advertising. She knows nothing about kids lit. Assignments are useless and usually worth no points or anything. I was really looking forward to this class too!
HORRIBLE. Never been a teacher. Knows nothing about children or teaching. Gives 15-25 minutes per 1.5 hour class to work on group presentations worth 2.5% of final grade, and waits to talk about the research papers (each worth 20% of final grade)until the day before it's due!!! Don't take her, at least for Children's Literature. You'll regret it.
Horrible instructor! Rude, disrespectful and condescending, talking down to students. Lost interest and simply wanted the course over with.
Linda is a very helpful teacher and a very easy class if you know what you are doing. Got an easy A and a reference. Quizzes are sometimes complicated and writing assignments are not that bad at all
I think she is the worst professor I had in MCC. she's talking in something in class and we see something else in test. I had A- in 1180 and I barely pass her class. I loved the English class from in 1180 professor. but her class make me not thinking to take any english classes anymore.I don't recommend her to any students.
Linda was very helpful and extremely easy to get in touch with. She has convenient hours and is very willing to help out her students. I am an older student coming back to school after a long break and she was very helpful. I would recommend this class to anyone.
She is possibly one of the worst teachers, I have ever had. I told her I had a learning disability rather then getting understanding from her instead she treated me like a idiot. When I turned in papers that I did really well on she would accuse me of cheating, basically told me I was too stupid. Treated student like animals.
The first couple weeks were dull with her, but as things progressed, she acted more as a ringleader for class discussion. In-class analysis of the novels read as homework are casual and enlightening. Students say something and she elaborates upon it for the class. She loves to talk and help students and will stay long after class if she has time.
Her assignments were very confusing. When I would ask for help, she would reiterate what she put online, which didn't help. Her weekly quizzes sucked and were beyond confusing and most q/a's weren't even in the book. For the final grammar test, it was listed as being due Saturday but it was really due Wednesday so I missed it. Not a great teacher!
Great teacher, takes the time to explain your errors. One of the best online classes I have ever taken!
She was very helpful and graded fair. This class mostly consisted of writing essays, and that was a major portion of the grade received. She gives you a chance to turn in your rough draft and tells you exactly what to fix. If you needed additional help,s he was very swift at responding back to emails and answering phone calls from students. (:
One of the hardest online classes i have ever taken, her expectations are way to high for this class. I have never had a problem with an English class until this one. I am very upset with my grade, she graded all my work and assignments very tough.
She's a horrible teacher giving out 11th grade work and then berates you that it's an advanced course.
She was a good teacher for an online class. Always willing to help, and you should always take her help for essays because she is a very tough grader. Its not impossible to get a good grade because I got an A, but use who ever and what ever you can to make sure your essays are very well written according to the assignment. Essays are alot of points
Excellent Professor, I would recommend to everyone.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Lost some of test, then made students take test with irrelevant subject matter. Belittles her students and treats them as if they are animals. It is pretty obvious all the good reviews on her are left by herself, which is pretty pathetic.
She is the absolute worst online professor. I would not recommend her to anyone. She changes due dates and does not tell the class when things are due. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL!
Worst professor I have ever had. She expects you to write like you are a master in writing and brings you down if your writing isn't to her liking. I would not recommend her to anyone.
Class wasn't to hard. Wrote a lot, but not overly to much it is a college English class. Quizzes were easy along with final.
She is not too bad as a teacher. Discussions are due every friday and essays are due on saturday and quizzes on sunday. There is only one essay throughout the whole semester but she makes you work on it part by part.
I would never recommend her to ANYONE. She grades papers expecting you to be a profound author who has published several books. She destroys you on ANYTHING less than perfect.
She gives good feedback which is awesome, but her grading style is awful. Basically wants you to be a master of writing. I've never had a huge problem with some aspects of English until her class. Take this class with someone else if possible.
I have taken many online classes at Macomb. I do not usually have a difficult writing papers, however Professor Brender made it nearly impossible to get a decent grade on the one paper due for the class. I can certainly accept constructive criticism, but she is extremely condescending with her remarks and unclear about the actual requirements.
Took her for English 1180 online. Easiest online course I've ever had. The only hard thing about this class were the essays. Turned in my homework, didn't do any of the rough drafts and finished with an A-. If you're good at writing, take her.
I love this professor I would recommend her to anyone. She was great with feedback and being honest about my papers. She doesn't give out homework everyday which is nice and everything is due on Friday and Saturday. She was great with answering questions and helping me out.
The discussions were easy although, I did have a question on one of them and the response I got back from her made me feel stupid and was just plain rude. Other than that I like the way she had us work on the essay it made getting a good grade on it pretty simple. Overall it was a pretty simple online class, and the tests are also easy.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER! Chose a different professor. She marks you down even after saying you followed her guidelines. Expectations are way too high for this course. The only good thing was the quizzes were open book and untimed.
Professor Brender gives great feedback! Her online English class is easy, but you are still able to learn skills, especially essay writing. She replied to my discussion posts and gave me very helpful tips on all my papers! If you need to take an English class I would highly recommend Professor Brender!
The online course was so easy. 1 discussion board each week, an assignment due on Saturday, and quizzes every Sunday. Easy A if youre good at writing and dont forget the due dates
She marked me down 10 points and wrote me a whole paragraph because I forgot a comma and misspelled one word.... shes kinda rude and makes you feel stupid
I did her online course. She is readily available to her students if they need help at all. But her phrasing can be confusing in her instructions/answers to questions. All quizzes are open book and untimed, pro, but choices can be confusing. Main grade is one paper you work on all semester. Do the work, and be a good writer, and youll do fine.
I took this class online and was nervous that I wasnt going to do well. Just do all your work on time and write a well written paper following all the criteria and youll do good.
loved her online class! gave really good feedback, but didn't mark you down for little mistakes. lots of class discussion posts but it was easy points. Definitely recommend!!!
By no means is this class an easy A, so if thats what youre looking for why are you even in college? This was my first online class as well as my first English course. Prof Brender really cares for her students that WORK hard and she knows exactly what to tell you to make improvements. You just need to really be open to criticism. Great Choice
This class was easy if you're a decent writer. Professor Brender does grade toughly, and she does expect for you to have perfect grammar. However, this class was more like a high-school writing class in my opinion. There are open book chapter tests every week. Her essay topics are vast and do not require a lot of thinking.
Be prepared to be marked down on every little thing that doesn't count as perfect. I had been marked down for using a comma and she provided a long explanation on why it was incorrect. Most feedback that is provided to you on papers are copy and pasted and provide no uniqueness to your paper. Plus, most feedback given sounds very condescending.
She is such a nice lady. You can tell she really loves her job and she wants everyone to pass.
Ms. Brender was an AMAZING teacher, very hands on and helpful. I'm texting another English class again for the winter 2020 semester and was actually looking to take her class again but unfortunately she doesn't teach the next English class that I have to take. :( She is very hands on and helpful as well as considerate.
I literally love this woman. Shes so genuine and caring towards her students. She wants everyone to succeed. She goes above and beyond to make sure everyone knows what she is teaching. Anyone that gives her bad reviews or didnt do good in her class is because they didnt pay attention or treated it like a high school class.
Professor Brender really made my first college experience great. She is very helpful and thorough with the assignments. She will respond to you after hours. She offers extra credit. The feedback you will receive is fantastic. She really takes her time and does her best to make sure every student in her class succeeds. Thank you Professor Brender!
Professor Linda Brender is a sweetheart. She is also very understanding and caring. With her helpful feedback, it is nearly impossible to fail her class. If she was this nice in an online course, I cant imagine how sweet she is in person. I would highly recommend her to any future students taking English 1180.
She was really nice. Wasnt too hard of a grader. Lots a essays but the course was only half a semester so it may be different for a full semester class
She is great! always gave good feedback on the rough drafts so you can do good on the graded version. If you do your work you will get an A.
In the accelerated class there is an essay rough draft due one week and the final version done the next. Overall easy class but she seems to be very opinionated and grades essays on what they are about almost and her personal opinion as much as how well it is written. Stressed workplace writing and gave topics you'd almost never see in a workplace.
She gives way too much homework and quizzes, Her essay grading is way too personal and she goes after every little thing and if she doesn't like what you wrote she will mark you down, and then she wonders why your not getting a good grade. and I understand that we are in college but she gives way too much work to do I mean I have other classes.
Had her for online class, super easy tests. As long as you write your essays and stay up on things its an easy A.
The class was really easy as long as you meet the deadlines. The tests are untimed and open book. She also offers extra credit chances. The majority of our final grade was based on 3 essays throughout the whole course so if you do good on those then your grade should be fine.
Professor Brender is a great professor, super easy course. She grades everything you do, but she is an easy grader and gives some extra credit. Everything is due late Sunday, she does discussions and some essay work, but other than that, nothing. She will meet you outside of class on a zoom call for as long as you need, great prof.
I've had worse professors. She's pretty easygoing as long as you do your work.
I was SUPER nervous about taking this 8 week online class. Professor Brender took time to meet with me prior via zoom. She answered all my questions and showed that she wanted me to do well and cared. Very nice and straight forward. Do the work on time and you will have no problem! Wish I had her for other classes!
Professor Brender is AMAZING! I HIGHLY recommend her class, while it is reading heavy she gives you a week to complete all your assignments which is so nice. She gives GREAT feedback on essays and grades VERY fairly. I would absolutely take her class her again if I could!
BEWARE Professor uses trick questions in quizzes. Tough class.
I had her online and she was an average teacher. Her class was not hard there was just a lot of homework.
Professor Brender is amazing. She seriously is the best professor I have ever had. You will not regret having her as your professor. She will meet with you for any questions or concerns about the course or any grade concerns. I have no idea how anyone could be a better professor.
Professor Brender is an okay teacher. I definitely think she grades really personally. I took her online class and honestly didn't feel like I could ask her anything because she was just too serious about everything. I'm just glad I am done with her class. STUDENTS BEWARE! The way she grades assignments is disappointing.
This is hands down the best professor I have ever had. I am not sure why there are bad reviews on her because she is so caring. When grading your assignments, even if you did something wrong, she states everything in a positive way. She gives you a lot of feedback, there is no textbook, and the whole course is opened!
Amazing feedback, honest and thorough. Gives a really broad range of subject matter to choose from (interesting too)! Very kind and understanding as well. May seem sort of redundant at times but all the readings and quizzes really help the essays throughout the course. With her help I managed to get a 300/300 on my final essay! Wonderful woman!! :)
Very helpful to students and gives lots of clear help and advice. Frequently communicates and gives tips on how to do well. Every assignment has a revision period where you can change it to get a better grade, and they tell you exactly what you should change. Workload is also surprisingly light, and you even get extra credit if you do everything.
I loved having Professor Brender. She was oh-so-sweet, thorough in her instruction, and very helpful. We had 4 major writing assignments, all were easy to complete and score well on. Her feedback is encouraging. She, like most english profs, is very passionate about not using AI and plagiarizing, so be sure to only submit your own work. 10/10.
If you are young or in any kind of dual enrollment or running start program, it's hard. Brender can be patronizing at times and grades super personally. When I asked questions or for help she dismissed me. She constantly brought up my age and me being young. She never failed to tell me what I was doing wrong but never helped me learn to do right.
This was a tough class. I am grateful that I took it because I feel I learned a lot. However, If you struggle in English this is not a class for you. She is a VERY tough grader, and when you ask for help she tells you to use your critical thinking.
Professor Brender grades incredibly personally, is unorganized, condescending, and hard to understand as she is unclear about what she wants from students. I learned nothing about writing in the workplace, instead, I was frustrated and confused. She does not answer questions in a helpful way. Please, find a different English Professor.
Dr B has clear criteria and gave great feedback on the important papers. If you worked hard on the material and applied what was explained in the readings, the papers were easy.
Dual enrollment high school students: she is not fond of having someone young in her college class. She frequently referred to my age and lack of life experience w/o answering my questions for clarification on some of the work. This 8-week course did not have any instruction, lectures, textbook, or lessons to learn from. It was just assignments.
She was a great teacher. She evaluated my assignment with efficiency and provided me great intellect on English assignments. As she gave a variety of information it was hard for me to get an excellent grade because of the tough grading on the writing assignments.
Absolutely horrible. She has no organization skills at all. Directions for one assignment are in a million different spots and are so unclear. She hates having young students in her class and frequently talks down and belittles her dual enrollment students that are taking the most basic pre-req course. I would NOT recommend her class to anyone.
The class is so unorganized. Directions are so confusing. I have contacted her multiple times for unclear assignments, and she repeatedly lectured me for just being a high school student and how I am not properly taught, even though she hasn't taught me anything. I do not recommend this professor whatsoever.
If you are a dual enrollment student be prepared to be told the reason you were graded a certain way is because you “don't understand things because you're a high schooler”. Grading criteria is EXTREMELY unclear. She will give you feedback one week to change something on a paper and when you do she will tell you it's incorrect the next week.
