Dr. Barnes is the best professor of Engilsh I've encountered in four undergraduate and two graduate years. She's hilarious in the classroom and helpful, which is good, because some morons whine about having to "read so much". Cry me a river. She
A great teacher, witty, good classroom control, interesting subjects, fair
She's the worst teacher I've ever had. Does not grade fairly and can't teach well. She only provides destructive criticism and is hard to please.
Be prepared to read a ton of material...grades fairly and offers extra help...has a great sense of humor...one of the friendliest profs in the dept...
Very Subjective
Very easy going. Lots of reading for some classes, although not this one. I highly reccomend.

If you like to write, you'll love this prof. If not, get out that drop form. Interesting topics, but some of the reading is anything but. Critiques are sometimes harsh, but she means well.
One of the best English teachers I've ever had! She is fair, understanding, and incredibly witty. For the composition class, be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing; fortunately, they are mostly short stories and brief poems.
she really knows her subject matter and knows what she is doing. she's also a great lady outside of class.
Awesome teacher, my favorite that I have had here.
She makes things interesting.
not easy not hard average proffessor no need to avoid
Great professor! Keeps the interest of the students, provides help when it is needed.
She was a really good teacher.
It was an online class. She is ok, middle of the road, nothing special.

Really sweet and funny. Sometimes flip-floppy on what she wants, but over all good.
Dr. Barnes is awesome. By far, one of THE best professors in the department. If you get the opportunity to have her, take it.
Dr. Barnes is a liberal. She is a feminist in the extreme. She shows the typical deference to minorities that liberals do at too many universities these days. Her reading assignments are the most boring I've ever had to endure. Her views are out there. As a philosopher, I would label this woman a total quack. She may be a good English teacher, but she needs to keep her views to herself, and stick to "feeling the experience of being alive" with Joseph Campbell.
horrible online teacher - stay away from!!!!
Excellent teacher. She is helpful, witty, intelligent, and encouraging. All English majors should take her class.
What a fun and terrific teacher! Take Dr. Barnes you will love her!!
Love love love love this woman. She is a wonderful professor and makes good use of class time. She is very funny too. Take her, you won't regret it.
I absolutely adore Dr. Barnes!!! We had so much fun. She's energetic, caring, funnya and smart. Love her!!
The Absent Online Professor. Least feedback and explanations for grades I have ever dealt with--must expect students to be psychic. Made an A, still don't know why... Only take with caution and lots of time to read text.
Very knowledgeable. My writing improved tremendously with her help and encouragement.
Dr. Barnes is a really cool lady. She knows her stuff and as long as you read, you will be okay. She is so funny and is very helpful-you just have to ask. I would recommend her to anyone!!!
Awesome teacher! The only grades you have are two papers, two tests, and a group teaching project. She's a very sweet, funny lady who is willing to help anyone who need it!
I took her online. She communicated good at first, but towards the end of the class, when I had big questions, I could get no response. Her grading seems fair. Just try your best.
This professor was quite possibly one of the worst I've had. She was not helpful at all. We asked questions in the discussions and she didn't respond. Her directions were never clear and you receive no true explanation as to why you are receiving the grade you do on papers or tests. Ridiculous.
Mrs. Barnes is an angel and I absolutely love her. She has hilarious stories and because of her, class was always exciting. Attending class is recommended because that's where all the learning comes from. She doesn't give you horrible assignments, but does give you quite a few (which are easy!just do it!)CHILI PEPPER FOR YOU!
I only had her for APSU 1000, but I am in the honors program so I see her a lot. She is VERY nice and I can tell she would be very helpful in class. In APSU 1000 she is very laid back, if someone didn't turn something she basically let them do it on their own time. I am sure she is much more strict in real classes. I still recommend her though.
Very brief in comminucations with you, as far as, extrapolation on what she wants from you. Will write back to you in response to your e-mail to her, but will not answer or respond to direct questions that you ask her in response to topics, in e-mail correspondence. In terms of helpfulness, she was completely useless. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WIT
Please don't take this teacher. She is very discriminatory. The school where she teaches are very pro-teacher and the students are virtually ignored.
This is the teacher you don't want to get when you really need the class, and it's the only class you need.
lazy teacher, doesn't grade timely, misleads, syllabi not up to date, text and syllabi do not line up, flakey
i took her online english 2030 summer class. it was pretty tough. lots of work and lots of reading. if you decide to take the summer course be ready to work long and hard for that good grade. its doable, but not easy. if youre not interested in the material, i wouldnt recommend it.
This class was TERRIBLE! I took Ms. Barnes in the summer and worked every single night for many hours on the work she assigned and still came out of the class with a B. She gave instructions on what to do but then graded a totally different way. The remarks she made on the work I turned in was very rude!! I would not recommend her to anyone! AVOID!
I do NOT recommend taking her class if you don't have to. She is not clear on what she expects from you. She makes rude comments and is extremely sarcastic in a mean way.
DO NOT take a class with this woman. If you don't have her opinion, you have the wrong opinion. Take another teacher in the honors program if needed.
Class is more like a discussion rather than a boring lecture. Lots of reading is required but she made it interesting. Look up the words you don't know in your reading.
I really like Ms. Barnes discussion style teaching method. No boring book work or lectures. She's funny, helpful, and really nice. I would really like to take another class taught by her. Awesome lady!
I like English & made A's in my last two English classes. This class was insane. It was five weeks of Hades. There was A LOT of reading, which was to be expected. I wrote at least three papers a week. My grade for each paper varied like the weather & the feedback from Prof. Barnes was little to no help. If you need this class - Good Luck :-/
Second class with Dr. Barnes, and she is a wonderful lady, but just a so-so teacher. The books she picked were awful and dated. The essay topics were trite and boring. Lots of reading, lots of writing, and all of it pretty boring.
Dr. Barnes is easily my favorite professor at the university. She makes her classes interesting. They're more of discussions than lectures. She takes eveyone's opinion into account but won't coddle you if you say something stupid. I've taken her for all four semesters I've been here and plan on taking her for the rest if I can. Highly recommend.
Doctor Barnes is the best professor that I have had. She is so understanding and lets you redo any essays that you get lower than a B on. She is easy to get in contact with and hilarious. I'm always excited to go to her class, and I'm bummed that I won't get to have her until next semester. TAKE HER WHENEVER YOU CAN!!!!!!
Easy class. Show up, turn things in on time, and you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
I am not sure if pigeon-holing Dr. Barnes would be fair here. I took her class online. She assigns SQ questions which are very overall. She is not very good at giving you specific instructions and you may have to beg her on what she really wants. Not a horrible teacher but definitely not the best I ever had. If concrete diretion is needed avoid her
Not a terribly teacher. She assigns SQ assignments that are too easy. However, she is very confusing on her expectations of the class and papers. She will assign papers with general instructions but will always find something wrong based on some hidden requirement. You just have to pull information out of her at times. I have had better classes.
Dr. Barnes is a very sweet woman. Her syllabus is clear cut and list everything you need to know for the semester. The class is easy as long as you show up and listen. No phones out in class because she doesn't tolerate it. She is always willing to meet with you and help you with anything you might need even things unrelated to the class.
Dr. Barnes is a wonderful professor and her classes are enjoyable. She tries to cover modern day topics with brutal honestly. This semester we read around seven books, about three or four of them being three-hundred or more page novels. But she goes at a pace where all the students feel comfortable with the topic they need to be writing about.
Dr. Barnes was very confusing. Her class doesn't seem too hard, and the assignments are not hard however she grades SUPER tough. She will tell you to do something and she will tell you that its wrong. you can never really tell what she wants, So if you think you wrote an A paper expect a C.
She gives no explanations about what is expected and diverts your issues to the writing center. You read a lot out the text and have class discussions. She was rarely on time to class and usually leave early. If your not the best writer I would suggest going to another professor.
She will not give you a chance to see an overall score for the class. So you will not be able to see how everything is weighted against the overall grade. We're halfway through the semester and I have no idea what my grade is. When you ask her for help or reasoning, she is not specific in her responses. I will probably be dropping this course.
Don't take this course you will regret it like I did. You can complete the test and givwe a detailed response but she will give you a zero for not commenting on someone's test response. All your work would be for absolutely nothing. When you say you don't understand you did all the work she will not even try to explain to you what's going on.
Doesn't really teach anything just expects you to use knowledge from previous classes, but doesn't provide additional information when she says you completely missed the point of the assignment. I feel like the grades I got were based upon her mood when she was grading and not straightforward when answering a question. Understanding of late work.
Do not take Crenshaw! You will have 2 major essays, 2 major exams, and a midterm/final; all of them will be ESSAYS! Extremely harsh grader, and will tell you how constantly underwhelmed she is by your work. Gives the option to work on essays again, but honestly it isnt really worth your time. She doesnt teach class, grades papers in class. BAD.
Terrible. Seems like she grades based off of her mood. Late to class and leaves early, teaches absolutely nothing. Tough grader- never gives anything better than a B, and rarely will you get a good grade. Doesnt teach or help.
AWFUL. Doesnt help whatsoever. Made me feel stupid the entire time.
I wouldnt recommend this professor to anybody. Her grading is tough, and her intentions arent clear. Cage writing prompts, vague essay directions. All exams are essays, and group projects are a joke.
Do not take this class if you don't want to write.
A lot of writing, don't take this class if you aren't prepared to write essays. Fun discussions in class, but unnecessary group work.
Crenshaw is sweet, but she never shows up for class on time, and it seems like she doesn't actually want to create lesson plans. Its more of a free for all during class time, and a majority is just discussion based off of the reading that was required the night before. Tons of essays!
Have fun writing essays all semester, and not getting anything else done. Prepare to have extremely vague prompts.
This teacher is TERRIBLE!!!! She does NOT teach you nor does she gave any help or feed back when asking for it. I would not EVER take this teacher again, I do not recommend anyone else either. She gives no explanation on her exams/essays, does not explain your low grades or scores, and expects you to write like a professional. She ruins GPA's.
I have never received a failing grade until I took this course. I would complete all the assignments correctly but it seemed as though nothing was enough to receive an A. Any feedback that she would provide would be unintelligible to the point where it seemed like she did not read my papers at all. Do not ruin your GPA taking this course.
I am not very good at writing papers, but she gave feedback that helped me improve some of my writing. If I had a question I could email her and she would get back to me within 24 hours which was nice as well.
This course requires a great bit of reading. The assignment requirements in the syllabus are not very clear and can be confusing. The syllabus said that she would provide helpful feedback with each assignment, but the feedback I received was never helpful, and was almost as if she didn't even read my work. I would not recommend taking this course!
Here's the deal, this class left me confused as a chameleon in a bag of skittles. Not once did I go into a paper with full confidence about understanding the meaning of the question she was asking us to address. I mean good gravy. She was also not very helpful when I reached out to get a better explanation on what we were supposed to be analyzing.
In this class there is a lot of reading which is to be expected. To pass this class with an A or B make sure that you participate each week in discussion boards and do all the SQs. She was very understanding when I messaged her with certain issues that I had so I would definitely email her if need be. I thought I was going to get a C, but got an A!
Organized in her calendar and syllabus. Lots of reading and to get through boards/papers you must have read the material. Weekly essays usually has a few prompt options. Exams are questions plus essays. Fair grader on essays and gives great feedback. Textbook seemed overwhelming at first but reading through it goes by fast and book was enjoyable.
As a professor that teaches an online course, one would think she would have at least a basic knowledge of how to us D2L, but she doesn't. Her instructions are incredibly unclear and nonspecific. She may be different in person, but as for online courses, i would suggest looking at someone else.
This professor was not helpful and graded like I was an English major. Her weekly assignments are not specific and she expects professional writing even though she did not teach one thing. She expects you to use prior knowledge to complete this course. I feel like she graded me completely inaccurate, I am an A student and struggled in this class
This professor was not specific in any of the assignment she posted. When I asked for feedback she did not help me at all. What is the curriculum to become a professor? This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken at this university.
Really bad at giving feedback. She is the first teacher Ive ever had that hates my writing. I always took her feedback for the next essay and she would just find something else wrong with the next thing. Really annoying and frustrating. You have to badger her for proper instructions and feedback.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. She is so specific on grading, and her prompts are ridiculously difficult to understand. She seems to somewhat care about your grade, but then after she tells you how to fix it she says youre still doing it wrong. I have never made below a B in English and have always done well until I took her.
Have you ever imagined a writing class that doesn't trip about grammar, sentence structure, and MLA/APA citations? Well this is the class, it focuses more on learning and digesting reading material and making conclusions, rather than all the stuff I mentioned above that I hate about English classes. Professor Crenshaw is awesome. Its very easy
Smart and interesting!
I recommend not taking this Professor. Save yourself the trouble.
Is way easier on students that she has had before. Treats the classroom setting like high school. Isn't "fair".. will tell some to stay off their phones and calls them out in front of everybody but would let others without saying anything
She has a TON of reading material. But the papers dont have to be in any specific format and a lot of them are personal opinion based. You just have to use quotes from the reading to prove you read the material and then write what you believe the quotes are about. Super easy class if you just follow directions.
Just a great Prof.
She is a wonderful professor and is honestly pretty funny. Her class is extremely easy, and the class also allows us to think deeper. It is not complex. She also goes over the assignments we do and explains them thoroughly. I definitely recommend taking this class if you need a laidback English credit.
Take her English 2330 class. Very easy homework, sometimes reading intensive but easy classwork and she's really easy going
