i wouldnt reccomend her, but shes a nice lady and offers plenty of xtra help
she isn't that great of a teacher but she is very helpful
very nice lady. will help u in a heartbeat. math sucks..if u can avoid it, i recommend it!
She is a nut. Does not teach well in class, but offers outside help.
Very sweet lady! She cares about her students & wants everyone to do well. Her explanations are somewhat unclear, but she offers tutoring that is SUPER helpful! I didn't enjoy this class, but I did enjoy her & her corny algebra jokes.
Nice teacher but hard to follow.

Sweet lady but surely not a teacher. Avoid her if all possible, especially if you don't like math.
Mrs G actually wants you to do well. She has multiple review sessions before test. Always will make appt for YOU and gives out review probs like whats on test...Do your homework and TRY and you will do well.
BORING!!!
She will bend over backwards to help you. I strongly recommend her, espically if you have trouble with math she will give all the help you need to succeed.
As nice as she is, I really have not gotten anything out of this class. The work is very easy if you are prepared for it. Lectures are boring and are directly out of the book. She will help you out with your work so you know what's going on.
If you don't like math don't take her. She isn't very clear when teaching, would not help me learn the material and offered no extra credit.
She is a super nice teacher who loves to see her students learn. If you don't understand something, she will be glad to explain it to you, and she will also bend over backwards to help her students outside of class. She really cares about teaching and cares for her students. Definitely recommended
She is a great teacher!! Always willing to help outside of class. Class does move fast, but test review sessions are very helpful. She goes the extra mile for her students!!!
Absolutely wonderful teacher. Very clear adn articulate, the tests are rather difficult but she puts a ton of time into review. She is very willing to help.
Pretty boring class if you've ever used a computer before, but she's nice and willing to help should you have problems...ps: she's 5-10 minutes late everyday which helps at 9:00am
if you know anything about computers then this class will be a joke. i went to class and played games online every day, took the tests, and barely paid attention. she is always 5-10 min late and you always can get out early. the class is SO easy and shes really nice and helpful
Mrs. Gurganus is such a nice lady and she treats everyone fairly. I have had her twice and did very well in both classes. Although, she is boring I would not take another teacher in the math department. She is the most helpful teacher that I have ever had.
If you find math difficult in the least, DO NOT TAKE HER!!! I have never had as much trouble with math until I got to her class. She takes forever to grade tests so it's harder to study for the final and she goes off on random subjects at time. She doesn't explain things very well and sort of expects you to know the stuff. I have to retake it now.
This woman is super helpful. She is very intelligent and is not at all a bad teacher. I've seen people complain about her not being helpful, but they aren't helping themselves by going out and partying when they could be going to tutoring sessions and studying a little bit. This woman deserves to be rewarded. Hint: She loves Kilwins chocolates.
The best teacher I have ever had!She is exceptionally smart and will go out of her way to help you....as long as you ask!!
Her review sheets are pretty much the test and she hands them out a couple days before. So as long as you do the review the class is pretty easy.
she may be one of the most boring teachers i have ever had in my life. she is completely monotone and everyday in class more than one person either falls asleep or leaves early. The class material itself is boring, but take any other teacher than her if you are able. her voice will put you right to sleep.
great teacher. couldn't ask for a more helpful teacher. she will go out of her way to help you and take time out of her personal time to have review sessions. very concerned as to whether you know the material. gives practice tests very similar to the tests. if you do the tests you'll be fine. has a good since of humor
Great teacher, very helpful and clear. The tests are pretty much the same as the study guides she gives out so make sure to study those.
I think that she is a really good teacher. I understand exactly what she teaches when she does.
I LOVE HER!!! She is amazing! Def take her for MAT 111! Really easy tests, easy to make an A!
yeah...mrs. gurganous was really boring...and at first i didn't like her at all. However, once i realized that you really have to work to stay awake and to do good in the class, I liked her a little more. She really is a sweet lady and is really intereted in what the students learn. really really do practice tests!! they are soooooo helpful!!
Very easy and very helpful. Need to do homework and practice for tests. If you go to class and do the work you can definitely get an A.
Linda was awesome! She taught three identical classes and would let us come to any of them. Attendance was just to help you out in the end. She will let you take tests ahead of time. She has a grade replacement policy. Quizzes and homework are optional, but will make the test count for less percent. She is very easy to work with.
Good teacher, lots of Homework on Course Compass online, but it's not due until the end of the semester, but keep up. Very slow at giving back tests, but the tests aren't hard. She gives you a practice test a few days before, and it's almost the exact same. Takes attendance everyday but doesn't use it for anything.
extremely boring...I want to die in her class! She gives a test and when most of the class fails she encourages everyone to quit because she knows she hasn't taught wrong...but i would rather burn holes in my skin then listen to her speak
Linda is completely useless in class. She makes many basic algebraic mistakes. Consistently. Takes attendance every day on a sign-in sheet. But won't count it against you. Tests are easy if you know what you're doing. If you take care of yourself it's a relatively easy grade. She's just no help.
Completely incomprehensible! Her dyslexic mistakes will take a toll on you after a while. So many other teachers will help you learn easier. she just replies, "it's not an easy class" and then she goes nuts. Do not take trust me
Very good class. She was always willing to help and give her time to help us understand, cares about students doing well. Explains things well. If you do your work outside of class you will do well.
To be completely honest - her tests aren't that bad, make sure you are prepared, but her teaching style is completely ineffective, she can't teach at all. Very unorganized on the board & just throws random examples & considers that a lesson without teaching the basis. She's really sweet though & lets students know there is help outside of class.
I really had a hard time understanding her and things just weren't taught in a clear way. I think she wanted to be effective, but she just wasn't. It was tough because there is a lot of info to learn and she is not a good teacher. she is NICE and she is not HARD, but she is not a good teacher.
Mrs G. is a very nice lady, and math is one of those subjects you can't really make that interesting.. but the class bores me to sleep. What's nice about her is she's always willing to help you understand. She throws away markers all the time. If you take her class, you'll see what I mean.
helps if you talk to her after class shes nice hard to understand
She is a great teacher because she really cares about students. she is willing to come to school in her free time to make sure her students are ready before the test. if you do the hws, its for your benefit because the subject is not an easy A.
Extremely helpful teacher who is genuinely interested in the success of her students, in both this class and the 111 class. She is very clear and willing review problems several times in order for students to master the material. Arranging an appointment with her outside of class is easy. Hardest working teacher i've had at uncw.
To anyone considering not taking a class by this professor as a result of the comments that she "makes mistakes in class": Everyone makes simple mistakes in math. The fact that she makes occasional mistakes when working out problems has no affect on her merit as a teacher. The mistakes are always corrected immediately. She is a wonderful professor!
I love how she takes the time to make sure students are really getting hit. I've learned more math from her class than high school and college combined. I feel more confident studying for her test than any other suject and up until this class, I hated math.
I LOVE HER!!! She's very easy to talk to and you can tell she really enjoys teaching math. She's so sweet and will help you out regardless of how easy the problem is. The way she teaches is very helpful and she is willing to go over problems numerous times. I have a 98 in the class. I HIGHLY recommend taking Mrs. G as a professor!!!
BEST TEACHER EVER! she is so helpful and the most caring teacher ever. I usually don't like math but I went to class because she made it fun. Sometime she can get a little confusing but she is always available to explain things.
Mrs. G runs her class very efficiently. She leaves it to the student to figure out def.'s and boring what not and rather spends most of class time on concepts, working the problems and making sure that the class gets it before she moves on. She's often available for help outside class. She's kind and knows her math well. Top 5 professors EVER!!!
Excellent instructor; I'm sorry she wasn't teaching 111 this term. I think she is a great asset to UNCW.
Linda,I had a great time in your class. I think you did a great job making others feel accepted and you didn't put yourself on a pedastal (like some prof. do). You were very understanding and always welcomed me and others to come to see you if we needed help.Sincerely, Jennifer Freas
If you don?t like or are not good at math Mrs. Gurganus is a great choice. She breaks the information down very well and has prepared me for the next level of math. If she sees that the many people are struggling she slows down as much as possible. Her tests are fair and reflect information went over in class. She goes out of her way to meet with
This class is a breeze if you go to class and pay attention to the definitions and concepts. You don't have to go to class a lot and you really don't have to take notes. Just make sure to keep up with the online homework and keep your notebook in check.
Linda is an excellent professor. She is an extremely nice professor and genuinely cares about her students. I would gladly take her again for a math class! Such a sweet lady and she really prepares you for higher level maths. TAKE HER!
Mrs. G is extremely helpful and personable. At times she can be a bit unclear when explaining things, but she will gladly help anyone after class. Don't take this professor if you are calculator dependent as she will require you to do much of the material without it. But you will learn more that way.
Great teacher! I highly recommend her! She made the course very enjoyable.
Awesome teacher doesnt even describe her, she is betterthan awesome!! Very helpful!!! I will be takeing her again next semester, I definately recommend her!!!
Seriously the easiest class I have ever taken. She gives out alot of extra credit on her exams. I made over a 100 on every exam even the final. She is also suppperrrr helpful and offers lots of tutoring sessions.
Mrs. Gurganus is a professor who not only teaches with great stride, but she offers to lend a helping hand to those who are in need of extra help. She goes extremely out of her own way to meet students outside of class time for extra help. I would highly recommend Mrs. G for any mathematics class anyone has to take! A++++++
GOOD TEACHER! TAKE HER! she loves math, and will do anything to help her students. She lets them call her and text her to asks questions and she will do anything to help you out, she understands if math isn't your strong subject and just wants the best
Took her for MAT105 and needed to get her for 111! best teacher sometimes a little too enthusiastic for math, but it is nice to see a teacher have passion. the online HW is due whenever...as long as its complete by the final. She doesn't curve so that sucks but she will try to help you out
She is kinda hard to understand. She is really passionate about math? sometimes a little too into it. She skips all over the place. She is a really nice lady and she is willing to do anything to help you but it was still really hard to pay attention.
Very nice lady and lets you know from the very beginning that the class is fast paced because it's a combination of MAT 112 and 111. She made review sessions every week if we needed to go. I recommend taking her.
Mrs. Gurganus is an awesome teacher! I cam from a high school that did not have a very good math department and felt a little behind even though I love math. Mrs. Gurganus helped to make the class a VERY good learning experience. She's an amazing person, and an awesome teacher. She puts a lot of effort into making sure you understand.
AMAZING TEACHER!!! I'm not very strong in math, but after taking her class, I became much more comfortable. She is SO helpful to all students, she truly cares about each and every one. She will do anything to help you acheive your desired grade. She is very clear in her lectures and easy to understand I wish there were more professors like her!!!!
Excellent instructor; always ready to help those in need. If you need a brush up before taking calculus, this is the course you need.
This woman is ALL OVER THE PLACE! Her disorganization is very hard to get past and she makes MANY mistakes in her examples. Often students correct her. I'm not impressed with her teaching style and feel like she is WAY under-qualified for her job. Although she is passionate about math, she is not a good person to learn from.
Hated this class and this teacher. Totally all over the place and really hard to follow. Makes basic mistakes all the time in examples and students have to correct her regularly. Wouldn't reccommend taking her for 115 unless you are already a precal expert.
I personally thought this professor was awesome. She is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had in my whole life. This is a Calculus class, so whoever teaches it, the material will still be hard. Also, for making mistakes, it is something everyone does and I can't stand people making rude marks because of it. Loved the class!
Do NOT take her unless you are an expert at math. She skips all over the place and is constantly being corrected. Last semester she told us something wasn't going to be on the final exam and lo and behold it was. She let saying she would post certain assignments online later that day, but they wouldn't get posted until the next week.
I've never had a teacher as disorganized as Mrs. Gurganus. Students have to correct her on every example, she skips all over the place, and honestly says "we'll just fool around with the numbers until we get it right" at least twice a class. I learned more from my roommate in one night than I did in 3 months of her class. Very passionate though.
This class is one that you need to be present for. She gives a lot of partial credit, but you can't skip classes, she takes attendance. She's not one to give you a point or two if you're that far away from making the grade, though, so don't count on it. Use past exams to study, they're -very- similar.
Linda Gurganus is one of the most adorable teachers on campus! She's the exact image of a cute grandma, and her personality matches! I go to lectures just because she makes them so entertaining with her cuteness. She does make mistakes, so watch out for those, but she genuinely cares about every student there. She makes it easy to succeed! Love her
Linda Gurganus is the BEST math teacher I have ever had! I was so worried about this class before taking it, but she really sets up her students for success (as long as you do all the homework and mymathlab). The only students who struggle are the ones who do not practice the material every day. As long as you do that, EASY A! TAKE HER!!!
I highly recommend taking Gurganus. She explains concepts very clearly and she's always available to meet with you. She met with me several times for one on one tutoring which really helped. Attendance is taken but not mandatory. She is a fair grader and although she makes mistakes sometimes, class is entertaining and you can tell she cares.
I loved her! She has passion in what she teaches and wants the student to do well and understand the material. She is so cute and sweet but makes careless mistakes occasionally. You can tell that she really enjoys what she does
all around good teacher very clear. Shows every step in problem solutions
I was really worried about this class, but Gurganus makes it so easy to do well! She's so willing to help you learn and understand, and her grading policies make it almost impossible to do poorly. She's a little goofy and makes silly mistakes but if you just accept it it's a great class!
awesome teacher! she made an intimidating subject very clear and simple. Definitely take her class if you can.
Bad teacher. I regret taking this class. They need to add a second pre-cal teacher.
One of the most absent minded people I have ever met. Someone corrected her on at least every other problem. She posts practice tests online, but they are no where near the difficulty level of the actual tests. Our first test was so hard only 13 of the class PASSED and she told us that she watched a kid cry while he was taking it.
This class was awful. She teaches you one way to do something and then tells you you did it wrong on the test. Very scatterbrained and tough. She is a really nice woman, but she is not a good professor to take. If you struggle in the slightest with one thing, you will be behind for the rest of the semester. I would not recommend taking her
Worst math teacher I have had. I hope she reads this and makes the class more reasonable for the next folks...
She never did examples in class which made it hard to understand what she was talking about. Only way to pass her tests are through her practice tests she has online which was the only way I learned anything
Mrs. Gurganus was an extremely nice woman, but an absolutely horrible teacher. I recommend avoiding taking this class altogether, but if you do take it definitely go online for the practice tests. Her lectures are horribly long and unhelpful.
Gurganus is a horrible teacher. Worst math teacher I've ever had. Tough grader, constantly messes up problems in class, and keeps you until the last minute during every single class so you can "play around" with numbers. The kind of teacher that gives a test on a make-up Saturday from a snow day.
She's alright, super nice lady and will do anything to help you. Some of her teaching tactics though aren't the best though. I really struggled thorough sequnces and series.
Very anxious lady, but knows her stuff. Homework NEEDS to be done on a daily basis in order to succeed.
Do not let her overall score on this website mislead you. I have now taken her class for the second semester in a row and have to retake both of them. She makes mistakes on every problem in class and the students have to correct her. She makes the material seem easy until the impossible tests. DO NOT TAKE!!
Very confusing.
The first time I took this class I took it with Mrs. Gurganus, and I'll admit I didn't do well. I got behind and my grades showed this, but I'm currently retaking it and I couldn't be happier, this lady is awesome. Never have I met a professor I can email for help in a different class at 11 pm on a Wed. and get a helpful and caring response.
VERY HARD! Hard to follow and tests were not always in covered material.
Her lectures seem rushed, and she is not thorough with working out problems. She makes lots of mistakes, and you are expected to catch them. She is not lenient about anything. Your entire grade is made up of 4 tests, and the final. The tests are designed to trick you, using some of the hardest examples from each unit. Would not recommend!
She is super kind as a person and if you have late work she will work with you to help your grade but she is also super frantic and seems as though she's distracted during class. She makes small mistakes all the time and it can be difficult to follow if you aren't that good at math. It's an easy A if you teach yourself most the content.
Very nice person but do NOT take her class. Very long and boring lectures. She assumes if you dont understand something, you werent in class or werent paying attention. No matter how hard you try, it is nearly impossible to follow along. Very nice lady, big heart, bad teacher.
a nice lady but one of the worst math teachers. I have to take this class for MAT 161&162 and I have had to teach myself trig. She goes off on random rants during lectures and will take the whole 1hr and 15 minutes for one ex problem. Stopped going to class because I learned more on the Alek program then her. Alek is a pain too. Dont take her.
She will give you multiple opportunities that you should not miss to study for upcoming tests and quizzes. Her grading approach is decent at best, and you may find it very hard to study by yourself for an important test, giving yourself a terrible grade. As a person howeve, Mrs. Gurganus is probably is the most caring professors out there.
I. LOVE. HER. Her classes are SO hard... but there has never been a time where she was not willing to help. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!!! She believes "the best way to learn math is with a cup of tea." She is really helpful and welcomes questions in class. No book, but practice and study guides are harder than the exams. Still my fave
I had Garganus last spring and I loved her! I admit she does make a lot of mistakes, but make sure you pay attention to catch them because it will help you in the long run. I found her website to be extremely helpful. I did all her practice exams and practice problems from all the years she posted and it really helped me prepare for the exams!
This class is hard. While she does make a lot of mistakes during class she really cares about trying to help the class in the best was possible. All of her quizzes are extra credit on the test and 3 tests and a final make up your grade. If you dont give this class the time and work hard you will not pass. Her website has lots of material to work on
Awesome professor. She's very thorough, but she provides great resources to help you succeed, and is very enthusiastic and accessible outside of class. One of the nicest and most caring professors you will ever meet. The secret to doing well in this class is to do the previous tests listed on her webpage before each exam. They are a godsend.
She gets off topic very easily.. I honestly learn more from doing the online homework than I actually do in class. she's understanding if you need extensions on homework. she grades more difficult than most. I've solved a problem using a different method than she taught and counted it wrong even when it was right
Regardless, MAT 162 is a very tough course to take in general, but with a very good understanding in calculus MAT 161, this professor did not make this class any easier to understand. I felt extremely lost throughout the entire course.
Great teacher, class covers some hard stuff but she tries to break it down as best she can. No homework, and all quizzes are extra credit. Such a nice lady, has a lot of funny stories that she'll laugh at while she's telling them.
One of the only professors I've had that actually wants you to succeed. She doesn't just teach you for the sake of a test, she wants you to actually know the material. She is very understanding, if you let her know that there isn't enough time to do the homework or that you don't understand she'll push it back a day or two. Incredibly kind.
Professor Gurganus is a pretty solid math instructor. She is sometimes difficult to keep up with in lecture do to the small mistakes she almost regularly makes while working on problems. Thankfully she is very understanding and cares about her students. Attendance was mandatory at the beginning of the semester but later changed.
She is a super kind person but as a professor it was hard to follow along in her class. She would either go really fast or cover up her work and would consistently make mistakes. If you did need more time on homework she would be understanding and work with you, but the only reason I passed was by not going and teaching myself.
Mrs. G is incredibly kind and cares about all of her students. She will do anything she can to make sure you succeed, you just have to ask for help. She has daily office hours, quizzes are for extra credit on tests (they won't hurt your grade), tests are just like homework (which she'll go over in class if you ask).
Ms. G is the BEST professor Ive had. If you must take any calc class, take it with HER, I was so worried about how I would do in Calc II, but she really makes it easy! She is so thorough and provided previous semester's tests that are SO similar. Homework isn't required & quizzes given for extra credit on tests! She really cares about each student!
Gurganus is sometimes absent minded and can be difficult to follow when going through problems. If you show effort in doing homework and meeting with her outside of class, she is very helpful and understanding. She's works extremely well with illness and health issues, and can be very accommodating.
Gurganus is a great professor who rewards her excelling students while also ensuring that those who are struggling have the help they need. She gives each student the tools the need to succeed in her class.
Amazing teacher.
Prof Gurganus is very caring and a wonderful lecturer. Her grading curriculum is great. No unnecessary work must be done to pass the class, but the class requires students to be responsible in their understanding and mastery of the material. If you are lazy, don't take this class.
One of the best math professors I've had. She will make the occasional mistake during class but helps to keep you on your toes! She is incredibly caring and really wants everyone to learn the material properly, and is willing to go above and beyond to get you there. She also did a great job moving the class online during the coronavirus outbreak.
Skip Linda and take someone else. She only got this position because of her husband, but if youre different from what she likes she will assume things. She wasnt loved enough as a child so she takes it out on other kids. She might be nicer for other courses, but I know 30 friends who had the same experience.
Really great - enjoyed her class very much. Would definitely take her again
She is not a good teacher at all. She is very strict and only know her certain rules, outside of that she knows nothing about math. Dont take
Provides plenty of material to review and practice. Definitely make sure to review tests and quizzes from prior years as they are very similar. Possible to take class without attending zoom sessions as they are recorded. Almost every test had an extra credit question at the end for 5-10 extra points. Also gives worksheets to boost your quiz grades.
