She is the best history teacher. SHe knows what she is teaching. Very informative. There are no tests except mid-term and finals. We don't write any papers and there are 11 easy pop quizes.
I enjoyed this class she makes history more than just dates and names you actually learn the meaning behind the dates and names. The exams are essay exams and she gives you 6 or so topics that she might put on the exam and then you write about 4. the pop quizes are from the assigned reading and are easy if you read.
Linda is a really nice lady, and a thorough professor, but the only downside is the level of reading. You get a TON of reading to do. There are 11 quizzes, and are directly based off the readings...so do them. All tests and quizzes are essay, which is nice cause you can put your own point in and get the points. Overall I would recommend Linda.
Linda is a very nice, she explain the subject very well. Make sure to do all the readings before attending class. Her quizes are easy.
Although a tough professor, Linda is fantastic. She demands a lot from her students, but students learn a lot from her. Be prepared to read nightly if you take a class from her, requires in class participation for points counting toward your grade. A great prof!!
She is super nice. I am not a fan of history but she made it interesting. I spent about 30 mins before each class to read for the quizzes and aced them all. Plus the readings are generally interesting so it's not torture. She cares about her subject and her students.
Make sure you come to class and take good notes. Attendance is taken and tests (a midterm and final) are more on the lecture than the textbook. Professor seems to know her stuff during the lecture, but hasn't been very helpful with answering questions about the material. Very nice though.
If you do the work and read the assignments, you will do fine in the class. There is A LOT of readings assigned, sometimes reading over 200 pgs in one week. I do not recommend taking this class if you have a full class load. Essay type quizzes every week. Prof. Janke is very helpful if you run into trouble. Interesting subject matter!
Professor has quite a passion for history! I loved listening to her lectures! She made me actually like history which has never happened before. Read the homework assignments or you wont do well on the quizzes. There are normally 10-13 quizzes that are worth a lot! But still a great teacher (:
She relies VERY little on our textbbok. She requires A LOT of out-of-class readings (on materials she finds online) and you get quizzed most of the time. I find her lectures hard to follow as to what i should write and how to organize it, but it isn't hard to understand. Her exams does require some studying.
TON of outside readings on materials she finds n she quiz you on it at times. Doesn't rely on textbook unless u're studying for exams (at least for me). Fair grader. She is passionate aobut history. Hard to find her outside of class. I am not that interested in Am. Hist, so I am somewhat biased about class. take her if u like Am. History
Eh..didn't really learn about history, learned more about what certain people were doing at that time.
Can be hard if you do not follow the readings and take a lot of notes, become helpful for the quizzes. Discussions are very helpful but require a lot of your time.
Janke was condescending and irritating. Way too much textbook reading - if you're not in the mood to read a dry, drawn-out, utterly uninteresting textbook for five hours each week, don't take one of her courses. When I asked Janke a question, she responded condescendingly and unhelpfully. Didn't retain any useful knowledge.
She is a terrible teacher, at least 50 pages of reading to do for every class period. Her lectures are rather boring, pop quiz's all the time and if you get behind its so hard to catch up with everything she requires you to do. Tests are all essay and short answer and I hated this class. Teacher is annoying and crabby, never answers my questions.
Her mandatory outside readings are least 15 years old. Weekly quizzes just test you to see if you did the reading, kind of like in 4th grade. Absolutely no cognative thinking required. She had us read 57 pgs on the Sally Hemmings-Jefferson affair and we read one paragraph on the entire Louisiana Purchase.
A few times I missed class... Which really, I wouldn't recommend doing in her class, I fell behind. I quickly realized that showing up was directly related to my grade. She was indeed interested to my success when I went to her office. Final exam is so similar to the mid term. Great lady.
There was definitely a lot of reading, but the class discussions and her lectures were engaging. It was essential to read the primary textbook (Discovering the American Past), but most people seemed to do fine without ever touching the recommended secondary textbook (People & A Nation). The open-note essay tests were easy if you took decent notes.
The class taught me absolutely nothing, basically gave me a mediocre reason (4 credits) to buy some History books. Basically the only components of the class were weekly quizzes to make sure you read 4 hours of material, boring discussions, and a midterm + final exam. The topics were also disappointing, with over half the course devoted to slavery.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH HER. She assigned loads of reading from different sources, she doesn't explain anything, and all we learn about is slavery, and NOTHING else. Her quizzes are tough, not multiple choice, and she expects WAY too much from you.
A LOT of readings assigned. She's a strict grader. Super hard class to do only, I really wish I didn't take it.
Very disappointed of this professor and class. Makes you read tons of outisde materials. Pop up quizzes were all like essays. Makes you write a lot of essays, and paid close attention to english skills. Whole bunch of essays and two exams like a big essay as well. Grading is 50% materials and 50% English, so I had problems with academic English and that affected my grade. Most of the readings were outside materials about slavery and random peoples, not much about Revolutionary war. She spent 10 min on Louisiana Purchase and war of 1812. It's more of an English class rather than History. Did not learn much of history.
Literally downing in reading assignments. This is probably the toughest class I've ever taken. Possible reading quizzes every class period, If you don't do the assigned readings you'll actually fail. If you want to do good you've gotta work your butt off!!
Dont take this class with this teacher!! I thought I loved History and was really good at it, but not after this course. Worst class ever, the teacher is very unclear of her expectations and all her tests are essay, which are graded horribly.
The key to the class is just showing up. She takes attendance and gives pop quizzes on an almost predictable timetable, but they are super easy. Usually they are 4 simple questions about the readings you were supposed to have read for class that day. Tests are mostly essay, but they are open note and you get to pick (do 46 for instance).
Get ready to read a ridiculous amount. This class is like shooting an arrow in the dark and hoping to hit the target.
I don't learn from reading a book, I learn by what the professor has to say. If you like to read alot of boring-ness, then this class is for you. Shes not helpful at like. Say you have a learning disability, she'd treat you like any other student in the class, and doesnt care if you fail. I really cant wait till this class is over. Dont take it!!
This teacher is giving me a hard time. There's something due everyday. Her teaching policy isnt so great, and organized. Do not take if you are not ready to learn a whole bunch of boring stuff.
This class content is interesting. The professor is stuck in her ways. If you point something out she does not give you a break. Her information is not on D2L it is on her own website. Be prepared to have many windows open to do this class. Reading is interesting and fun. You get to visit historical sites. She gives good feed back.
She has her own website, why?! Doesnt make sense to me. She makes you read a whole bunch, had us buy 5 expensive books. She seems like shes in her own world, very careless if one needs help, shes very tough. She basically doesnt explain anything to you. Makes you find it on your own.
For someone who has a good memory and interest in history this class is do-able. BIG WARNING: for the this class, the tests were all in timed essay format. Being strong writer with the facts ready is necessary to do well in this class. Strong writers will do well. She assigns A LOT of reading w expensive books. Much too much work for 3 credits.
She was not organized. Not sure she was even prepared for class sometimes. She expected so much from you when she gave you little to work with. Lots of reading and quizzes that were worth little points but were a huge part of your grade in the end.
The class clearly interrupted the professors summer plans. Rather than use the full term she crams everything in before the 4th of July, meaning you have 200-300 pages to read a week. Classic case of a professional student turned professor who has unrealistic expectations of undergrads and asserts her educational superiority through tough grading.
This class was terrible! I would not recommend it to anyone! She has ridiculous expectations and does not give the credit you deserve. I have taken many classes and this is by far the worst!!
Hard class, hard grader, too much reading. She think that students only take her class and no one else, the home work and readings are crazy long! She expects 10 online discussion posts a week are you kidding me!!!
Requires many books and the purchase of a movie. Be prepared to spend any free time reading out of all the various books and articles. She is not specific about how many discussions you need, she says 4 but I do 9 a week and received a low B. Lots of writing and reading, above that she is very hard grader. Be prepared to work very hard for a B or C
Took her online class. Lots of reading, usually requires at least 4 discussion posts for a C, with 8 or more lengthy posts for an A. Books expensive and numerous. Strict grader, with very high expectations. Usually I get a B or higher, but I'm not a strong writer, so I got a C. Need to be a good writer for this class.
loved her history of women in modern America class, a decent amount of reading, quiz maybe once a week, usually pretty easy to answer questions. not a hard class to do well in as long as you do the work
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. I'm really good at history and I felt like an absolute idiot in this class. Homework overload and you will be reading a TON. Everything she had us read really was not interesting and was extremely long.
She is a terrible teacher. Doesn't give you enough time to even finish the quiz and get a good score. I complained to her and she said I needed to work on my test taking strategies. What does that even mean? I took Calculus 1 and Physics 1 with this class and she made it harder than both of those classes. I have had straight A's in all my history
There is A LOT of reading, several hours a week. The tests were essay about a subject the reader should be familiar with. You are allowed to copy and paste from your notes, so as long as you take good notes, and cover the topics given it isn't difficult, it is just a tremendous amount of reading. Linda is clear on what you need to know.
Probably about 2hrs of reading a night, I honestly had a lot of fun in this class and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to fufil a history requirement!
Had to read 3 books, class has 2 textbooks that you have to read, she gives open answered quizzes almost every class and you cant make them up so you cant skip a class, also doesnt use the d2l website at all so you cant see your grade there you have to ask and you cant see what you missed if youre not in class, test are also all open answer.
Knowledgable and challengingthe two most important qualities of a professor!
Linda is a good Prof. who knows what she's talking about. But beware, you have to do lots of reading each night because she does pop quizzes. The tests are easy because notes can be used and get to pick questions to answer. Make sure you participate in class discussion b/c it's part of your grade as well as attendance.
This teacher is very hard to please. She makes it seem like if you miss a tiny little detail you cannot come close to receiving 100% on anything. You write a few essays but most of it is A TON of reading. My suggestion is do NOT take this class from her if you are wanting credit. It is terribly hard!!
i recommend you buy the books because there with be lots of pop quiz's and about half the quiz's are from the book and the online books did not even work for me, but i bought them online on amazon for $30 for each of them. like i said, about a pop quiz every week, lots of readings. i recommend that you make friends in this class so you pass tests
Took her for U.S history ll and Ive never wanted to drop out of a class so bad! I knew from the start my grade was going to be back you get a pop quiz almost every class period and you just have to be prepared bc youre not sure if youll have a quiz or not so you have to do the readings every night. Read the material and still did bad on quizzes
First class online as a PSEO student, when confused was really rude about it instead of nice. No feedback on quizzes, tedious discussion posts required.
Be ready to read a lot, always read ahead if you can. Very tough grader never got a perfect and I'm a 4.0 student. Make sure you do your discussion posts very crucial to your grade, make sure you know everything about the topic of the week before you take the test.
Be ready to read a lot, I would recommend reading before the new week starts. Very tough grader I'm a 4.0 student and I only got 1 perfect. Read the syllabus to reach her high standards. All her quizzes for online are typed answers no multiple choice. She requires a lot of discussion posts just to meet her requirements.
KNOW HER DEADLINES AND SYLLABUS - You can get an A in this class Quizzes are essay based, and some questions require more thoughts/writing than others. Discussions are required and post more than 9 times a week if you want a good participation grade. There is a lot of reading, so stay on top of it - quiz time too short to read for answers
DO NOT TAKE LINDA! Worst class I have ever experienced. I took this class online and unless you want to do 16-24 hours of history homework every week and pull all-nighters, do not take! We had to read a 600 page novel, numerous articles every week, multiple discussion posts, and OPEN ENDED TESTS. I am a straight A student and this class was awful.
you need to be able to give at least 5 hours of reading time for this class. too much work. long class. I fell asleep a few times. i never read a book but did spark notes in order to pass. the pop quizzes SUCK!!!
Gives extreme amount of reading for an intro class. You basically need to read everything to be ready for the quizzes, but she doesn't give reading guides, or any idea what the quiz will be on. Quizzes are all short answer, and she requires you to make cited quotes in the time limited quizzes, so you might as well read them as you take the quiz.
The worst class ever. Avoid this class AT ALL COSTS. Has her own website like shes the president. You need to read at least 4 hours a day just to take a quiz thats open ended and need to cite with a time limit that is absolutely unreasonable. You will have to type up an absurd amount of discussions to just receive a C.
Janke is a great professor she is funny and very considerate, do know there is a lot of reading each week and you have to pay close attention but the discussion posts always fill in the blanks for me. Overall, I would definitely take one of her classes again!
Linda is very nice & easy to reach. However, get ready to read; you have to read a chapter from a textbook every week. On top of this, she assigns more reading (includes articles, another textbook, and historical documents). You need to post many discussion posts per week to get an A. The quizzes are open note and there is no final; take good notes
Linda was very clear about what she wanted done. 10-15 discussion posts/ comments on D2L posts a week, two quizzes a week ( one multiple choice, the other was paragraph answers ), there was multiple items to read weekly, you were expected to check D2L daily. If you work at all this class is NOT for you, its a lot of stress. I do not suggest her.
When taking her class we had to read a textbook(20+ pages) chapters and take a quiz on that. And also read 7-8 articles the majority of the time, there were some weeks that were relatively light but mostly heavy. Quizzes are easy, if you do the reading and on top of all the reading there are discussion posts 4c 8b and that's if she liked them.
She's a solid choice. Show up and do what she asks of you and you will be fine.
I have love/hate feelings towards this professor because she has a good heart and wants you to be successful in her class. But, she's a tough grader and you have 2 tests/quizzes to do every week and if you skip one, you cannot make it up. I'm in her class right now and I have an A so I'm trying to keep it that way. You have to work for your grade!
This class is really difficult if you have a chance to take a different one for credit I would. There is so much reading each week, usually, at least 100 pages, with a quiz following, the quiz is all short answer/essay format. On top of that, you need 4 discussion posts a week and need to read every single post for credit.
Her workload is far too much. If you are planning on having a life outside of her class DO NOT TAKE. I am a straight A student and I had to drop out. Far to much reading and her grading on the discussion quizzes are just ridiculous.
I thought this class was horrendous. Didn't learn a single thing from it.
This class is definitely not for someone who is just trying to breeze their way through. There is a lot of reading, but if you do the readings and answer the questions on the discussion quizzes that she gives thoroughly, then you will pass the class. Her grading terms are very clear, just make sure you have enough time to read and post discussions.
The professor herself was very helpful and really cares for her students. On the other hand, this class requires lots of readings and there is 2 quizzes each week. The discussion quizzes themselves, can be tricky sometimes and are graded very harshly. This class is definitely not going to be easy, but if you work hard you will be fine.
This class definitely requires a good amount of work and reading but it is actually a super interesting class, and the professor was amazing. She was always there if you needed help, she laid out exactly what you had to do to get certain grades and she was overall very caring and kind.
The content in this class is rigorous, and there was a lot of work. Take this class only if you have the time for it, and the skills to manage the workload. That being said, it was one of the most informative classes I have ever taken. It truly helped me understand the underlying causes for the important events in American History.
I'm a History major so I didn't think the class was hard. Loved the teacher, she worked with me on some issues in class. This class is not easy if you are not prepared to work and read. You will read a lot and the reading isn't easy. I was able to use the class as a refresher for doing research and get used to reading difficult material again. A+++
I never enjoyed history classes, but I always did good in them, tell it came to this course and this professor. 0/10 recommend. Just go with a better professor.
I love history, even though there was lots of reading, I enjoyed the teachers willingness to help when needed. I am taking another history class with her in the Fall.
easy work but there is a lot of it, overall expect to spend 10~ hours a week studing/working.
Heavy workload. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. But Janke is also very understanding of mental health and personal life. She's easy to contact and is willing to help anyone in need. She puts a lot of effort into creating her material, therefore her site is extremely organized. I am good with history so I may be biased but I would recommend her!
10/15 weeks for the discussions were based on 60+ pgs. each week on slavery. Slavery was a very important aspect of our history in America to learn. The long-lasting weeks on end of reading about how awful white people were to others began to feel like an agenda. There are other things to learn of our history than just these dreadful times.
Lots of work is expected of her. Weekly multiple choice quizzes, a written quiz, and weekly discussions with three or more responses, wouldn't recommend taking her class.
Great professor. Took online U.S history everyone should take Linda. It was a great experience.
I took this class without reading about the negative comments left about Prof. Janke on here and just want to say that I had a great time and thought she provides a very fun and engaging class. If you stay on top of the work and do your part in discussions every week then this class is not that hard.
I really like her class. We're halfway through the semester and she is very caring of her students time and understanding when things come up. She gives free tickets throughout the semester, so if you miss a quiz or assignment you just need to connect with her and she will reopen the deadline for an entire week. Highly recommend taking her class!
great prof! Very kind and caring. Offers a lot of extra credit options, and tickets for missed tests. There is a lot of discussion posts due a week (8 for an A). Discussion quizzes also do take a while, but is overall a great class to take.
If you plan on taking a class with this professor DO NOT DO IT. I excel in history classes and loved every social studies class I've taken. Except for this one. Multiple choice and open ended tests and 60+ pages of reading each week. Avoid this professor like the plague unless you don't want to have a life outside of her class, worst professor ever
I really enjoyed her class. She was understanding and kind. There is a lot of reading in this class, but it was all very interesting. Graded on few assignments.
I really enjoyed this professor. She truly cares about her students and understands that her students have lives outside of class. There is a lot of reading required, but the reading is interesting. Graded on few things.
Professor Janke is very understanding and accessible outside of class. This class is very paper heavy so be ready to write but the papers aren't too bad she gives excellent feedback. Although attendance isn't mandatory you are graded on attendance.
Honestly, this class was fine except for the excessive amounts of reading. She says that you should budget about 12-16 hours per week for this course, and that is very accurate. I found that she wasn't the toughest grader but would sometimes take points off for small things. She was very gracious with extensions. Lots and lots of writing.
Professor Janke is very kind and caring. It is easy to do well in this course if you put in the hard work and effort. It's a history class, so the workload is definitely heavy, but still manageable. She is a fair grader and even allows the ability to earn up to 4 tickets for free extensions on quizzes. I enjoyed taking this course and learned lots.
If you have a job don't take her class. She assigns more readings my last three classes combined. Multiple chapters from the textbooks and then some extra articles for fun. She doesn't provide any rubrics for grading. She required over 8 paragraph-length posts a week to even consider giving you an A on the discussion portion of the class.
Don't take classes by this teacher unless you excel reading hundreds of pages, a minimum of 4 paragraph length discussion posts, and a quiz each week! Too much reading that you have to condense down for timed quizzes. 4 discussion posts is a C, 8+ is an A. You MUST cite specific page sources for each quiz answer! And MANY MORE frustrating things…
