Linda is a really good prof. Funny as all hell but the course itself is a lot of work. Names and dates and hundreds of Scottish and English Kings and Queens. Memorize all of them and you'll be fine. Pretty fair prof too.
Terrific professor- provided notes online and the textbook was really good (easy to read). Lectures were often quite funny and she was incredibly friendly outside of class.
Dr. Kerr is about the raddest teacher that I have ever had in my University career. I took her Scottish History class and looked forward to it every week. She was fun and told us alot about her sex life! Yeeeessssss! Can't wait to have her in HIST 460! I recommend her highly.
Linda Kerr is by far the funnest and must lively teacher i have ever had the pleauser to be thought by. I have her in a 3 hour night class, and she is most definataly the only reason i dont hate it...in fact i look forward to her class all week. Shes AWSOME!!!
Best teacher ever, shes so funny and her class is never dull. Very clear with what she wants. Although the paper is a dozey :S. Highly recommended.
Bad online notes that myself and friends could not figure out. Did not work from a text. Talked to fast in class to keep up with note taking. Lots of colorful comments and movies that while making the class were of little or no use. Lectures were poorly organized and difficult to follow. Test and paper were very large and difficult for 100 lev
Linda is the most interesting history instructor I've ever had (or heard of)! She relates very well to the students and makes learning history very fun. Her tests are not easy and she is not an easy marker, but she very much cares about her students.
so funny.
Absolutely fabulous! The only History Prof that has EVER made learning History enjoyable! It is a joy to sit in her class...even on a Friday, when we all wish to be somewhere else! She is funny and very helpful if you ASK! Posted class notes are a plus and easy to follow if you attend class! DUH!
Dr. Kerr is funny, and interesting. She genuinely loves Canadian history, and knows so much about turn of the century Canada. She will help with resources on your paper, and takes a sincere interest in what you write about. Finally, she doesn't take school too seriously, and poor marks are accompanied by a reminder that you have time to change.
she wastes time, sure she's funny, but not focussed. I would have liked it more if she made sure she was teaching. She would go off on tangents about anything but history, so i zoned out.
had her for can hist 261 also. HILARIOUS. would take any one of her classes again. she teaches like she's tellign you a story...so if you just pass the story on a couple of times, you almost have no need to study because you remember it so damn well. i really love this style. the assignments were a bit ridiculous, but i guess i got my $ worth.
If by funny you mean insulting, sure, she's funny.TOTAL 1 sided Catholic and Scottish bias in her class. This isn't teaching, it's editorializing.HORRID Notes. You'd do better to read BBC history websites. I'm a History major with 10 classes previously completed-this is the worst yet.
Best History Professor in the University. Its hard to get a really good mark in her class and it is hard to get a bad mark in her class. She is so damn funny so time passes by well. Get her. Wicked.
One of the top 5 profs i've ever had. I really, really loved class with Linda. She also kicked my writing up to a whole new level. If I was to do a masters she would be one of the two I would like to do it under. If you get a chance, take at least one class from her.
Kerr is not funny, she is insulting and disrespectful to her students and their opinions and shows a high, immature, degree of intollerance. She is not tollerant towards anything if it is not Scottish or close to her opinion. She is not approachable and is not helpful. The notes are useless and the textbook is not used. Avoid if possible!!!
This woman, if not teaching, would most definately be on comedy central. Her interesting accounts of Scottish History in the lovely scottish accent along with her hilarious antics makes this one of the best, well actually the best lecture i have been in. You just want to stay and listen to her talk.
Linda has fans only because she is funny. She has no sense of direction in her lectures and no sense of significance. She is closer to an armchair history nerd than an academic. Linda would do well to craft her lectures around a point and give up her snooty cynicism and overwrought comedy. Avoid this prof.
Sure she's funny...but I expect more out of my profs, like an appointment when I ask for one. She plays favorites, and doesn't have respect for her other students.
She's funny and keeps everyone interested. You need her lecture notes but can get them online. Textbook was useless - didn't use it at all and it doesn't correspond to lectures or tests!
Linda's class is awesome. She's funny and makes the class interesting to be a part of. She's very helpful, and knows her material very well. I'd pursue more classes in this field if there were a few. The paper was a bit in excess, being 10 pages, but other than that, a very fair, well rounded class. I'd recommend this prof and teacher to anyone.
The on-line notes can be deciphered if you attend class. Tests were easy, she gave me a mark for a joke on my midterm. She is very funny, and who cares if she goes off on a tangent, it's not like it will be on the final. I would take another class from her for sure.
awesome prof! used small jokes to keep students interested. but careful about joking on midterms if she's not the one that marks it (as her TA won't get the joke). overall great tho!
She is a little crazy but in a good way. You might learn a lot about Scottish history but you will learn lots. Actually entertaining but you'll find yourself saying, "WHAT" a lot trying to figure out where the rant began.
Her class was very enjoyable and definitely kept me awake on those early mornings. She talks about alot of random stuff but it helps you remember the material. I definitely reccomend this prof to anyone who needs to take a history course.
Her lectures are done in a narrative format which make the material just sink right into you. Notes are provided AS SUPPLEMENTS online so you can print them and listen along as she lectures instead of just writing frantically. She definately knows her stuff and works in humor whenever she can. Highly recommended.
Really interesting lectures, good notes.
I thought she was funny. It was a great class. I totally recommend her for any history course. Her tests are easy, she gave me a mark for a joke. Don't buy the book - total waste of money. All the notes are online, though you will have to attend class to understand them.
Great class and lots of fun! Fairly easy tests and she was just a hoot! The details she provided from her own experiences made the material interesting and fun. I would definitely take another class with her. Her sense of humour is awesome!!! Textbook was crap and I never touched it once and still managed to get an A.
Funny lady, very knowledgeable, I got a B+ in the class only due to the fact that I really bit it hard on the midterm, research essay was a little overwhelming but managed to get an A on it, book was useless. Online notes were great supplementary info if you missed a class but her "oral notes" were where the exam material came from. Good proff.
very cool - makes it fun

This woman is absolutely hilarious. Made the material comical which is quite a feat when you're dealing with pre-confed canada. I would take another one of her classes in a heartbeat.
Very good teacher, very funny. Was available whenever you had questions. TA for the class was a moron, but was willing to overrule his marks, and was fair. Definatley take another class from her, the best prof i've had so far in University.
She talks about sex almost every class and it's so hilarious. Her notes are great. Definately not a class you get bored in.
Going to class was always entertaining. She loves to teach and it is defianately evident. She is very funny. He exams are fair and her essay assignments are doable. I would definately recommend her for any history class even though i only took history 260. I might look into see what other classes she is teaching.
She is definately funny and its worth while going to class. Tests are not too bad if you take good notes. The essays are not too hard and she is willing to help out.
Her exams are looonnng answer, all pertaining to her lecture notes. She is funny but her lectures are extremely disorganized, and the way she presents her material is a little unchronological. She is an economic historian who specialized in the fur trade. If you want to do well, focus on economics, trade and First Nations information.
She know's quite a bit about history, the only hard part is actually getting her to talk about it. While her lectures will teach you things, most of it will be worthless on her exams, as they seem to be based on her side comments, rather than your notes.
soooo funny! exams are essay questions, and not too bad if you do your work. however, she does not use the textbook at all, so its basically up to you to look up the information in the text. i personally didn't even open the text. although she's highly entertaining its hard to follow what she's talking about in class at times.
Extremely funny and informative. I was worried at first that my notes wouldn't make sense, because she tends to jump from place to place in lectures. When I looked back at them to study though, they were very clear and concise. Linda's use of anecdotes made facts much more fun to learn and easier to remember. I never opened my textbook and was fin
Linda is a fair, and easy going professor. If you attend her lectures, she's friendly and the atmosphere is great to be a part of. People should by begging to get into her classes. It's no cake walk; she'll make you work, but it's interesting so you'll enjoy it. Trust me!
This was my second class with Linda and I enjoyed it even more than the first. Funny, engaging and entertaining I absolutely loved every minute of Scottish history. A fair maker if you put in the effort. Some people in the class were disappointed with the grading but they were the ones who never bothered to show. Love this class and I love this pro
work hard and you will do well. sit there like a lump and you will not. A very fair system. challenging prof, very helpful, but does not tolerate slackers
She is insane! For a mandatory class the poorly defined, many GROUP projects is unreasonable. She also LOVES to hear herself talk. Her TA is beyond annoying. If it wasn't mandatory for a history major, I wouldn't have taken it past the first class.
Difficult class - needs to spend a bit of time re-organizing the assignments and giving some structure to the class. It's very haphazard the way it runs - some days you have no idea what's due even with the syllabus AND the assignment sheet in front of you. Clarification is ALWAYS asked for and even then many in my group did different things.
After getting a 7 on my history IB exam I expected this class to be a breeze. Although you only write one paper and a couple of essays on the final, her m/c questions were not on lecture material at all and she asked irrelevant questions. Attendance is mandatory because she asks things like what vegetable she hates for bonus. lectures interesting.
Wow did she get off topic a lot. some starnge stuff came up and some of it ended up on tests. There was not really a main textbook so you needed to be in class, even if there was if would not cover the reandom stuff she covered. I did not expect that and do not care what she does with her free time
You're going to end up doing most of the learning on your own. The only real reason to go to class is to hear her humorous asides which can last for multiple hours. The tests are difficult in the amount of random info you need to memorize but she marks essays fairly.
Test was okay, but class was impossibly difficult to pay attention to. Waaaay too much information!
Good proff, knows her stuff for sure. She tends to go pretty fast through the material and then gets sidetracked very easily. She's a bit of a low talker so try to sit close to the front. Tests are difficult and the paper is tough but if you work hard she marks fair.
One hell of a information rich class covering from pre-Roman to the beginning of the 19th century. Linda was enthusiastic which definitely helped but the shear amount of info needed to be known for tests can be really overwhelming, especially the final. Essay was easy, midterm was ok, thank goodness for giving us the choice to choose questions
really good teacher but somtimes talks to fast
Great teacher, lots of fun super funny. Is willing to joke around and pick on students in the class but covers the material well, make sure you have a note taking buddy just to make sure you get all the important points. She is a great teacher and helps you out as much as she can and is super approachable, she loves talking about sex!
She is horrible! She is impossible to follow in class. She goes on side ramps which make it difficult to take note. Her criteria is completely different from what she marks and she changes the criteria as she goes. She makes fun of people she had in her past classes which makes her unapproachable because you could be next! She is the worst prof!!!
Fun, entertaining prof. Interesting material that is well presented. Exams are tough, but not unfair. Essay requirements and rules seem drastic, and marking for it is also pretty strict. Still, overall it was an enjoyable course.
Her lectures often get quite off topic but are rather hilarious. She teaches aspects of history she is interested in and doesn't follow a specific lay out for the class but as long as you attend lectures and pay attention you will do well on exams. Her informal style makes her very approachable she is willing to help you out on papers.
Great prof! Funny, interesting, and a little bit insane. She's got a very big personality, which can be intimidating, but is very nice and helpful once you actually speak to her. Class attendance and meticulous note taking is key, the textbook is entirely irrelevant. As long as you have attended classes and not fallen asleep, you'll do swimmingly.
Funny teacher, but it's on you to get the notes from her (high volume) talking and not overheads. Didn't like the exams because it felt like it included a lot of material never mentioned
BEST PROF EVER!!!!!!!! If you attend class you will do good. SO funny!!!!
Dr. Kerr really knows her stuff and is hilarious to listen to. The whole class is a story, complete with pictures. Her expectations and grading are completely fair. Great history class!
Linda is amazing. She pretty much taught me how to write a history paper properly. She was the only prof I've ever had who would take the time to sit with you and explain how to write a paper. I would love to take another course with Linda. She's funny, her lectures are aweseome and she's a very fair marker.
Terrible prof. Talks way too fast, impossible to take nots. Makes fun of students. Tests was not a fair representation of knowledge because it was completely random. The textbook, is also very unclear and jumps from topic to topic in paragraphs making it impossible to take the most important part or idea because its all fact after fact.
Dr. Kerr is passionate about history (and insanely knowledgable about it) and she can give a TON of information in one lecture. If you use her Moodle site (the textbook is next to useless for this course) you will be fine. Utilize Linda as well! She is an amazing resource, and is more than willing to help.
Keeps lectures interesting, very very helpful when you ask for it, but difficult, slightly opaque assignments. Straightforward, fair tests. A darn nice lady.
Linda Kerr is very nice, easy-going and quite funny. She's great about extensions and helpful (moodle's great). So nice that it's hard for me to say this...but I hated this class! She whispers, reads straight from notes while staring at the podium and talks in too much detail about useless facts with no powerpoint or board use. Tough to focus!
I thought Linda Kerr was an awesome teacher! She teaches history like a story, and she's looking for you to interpret history, not just regurgitate her words. LOVED it.
Terrible professor. She knows her stuff, but in regards to her Scottish history class, teaches from a very biased perspective that can get offensive and is immature. She talks to fast, making it hard to take notes and goes on a tangent about useless information. Also DO NOT write a paper from any perspective in contrast to her biased views.
Really funny, interesting prof. Her lectures are a bit all over the place, but worth going to. She tells you in advance what terms you will be tested on, so there's really no excuse for not doing well. Don't buy the textbook, though.
Great prof, funny, engaging, and really brings history to life.
Had her for two history classes. Amazing prof, really knowledgeable, always willing to help. Marking was fair - you do have to really try, which some classmates were unwilling to do. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Great teacher. Makes the material very interesting and engaging.
Hands down one of my favourite profs. She is hilarious and her lectures are engaging. Don't buy the textbook (she doesn't use it), and attendance is a must. She speaks a little fast, but it's easy to get used to. Exams are fair, just make sure you study the specifics. Absolutely loved this class, she's fantastic.
I LOVE Linda, and her class. I have never been particularly interested in history but she made it so interesting and easy to remember. Fairly easy class as long as you attend regularly and pay attention! Make sure you take good notes! I would highly recommend this prof!
Professor Kerr is a great teacher. She provided a good cross section of material on Scottish history and avoided sticking to an area she preferred. Each class was enjoyable and I honestly looked forward to the next one. The work load for this course is quite manageable and won't leave you scrambling like other 400 level history courses.
This class was amazing! The material was very easy to follow and logical, with little tidbits to make it interesting, despite no powerpoints. However, while Linda is hilarious during lectures, I found her to be quite rude and abrupt both times I talked to her, which, despite receiving an A, makes me hesitant to take another class with her again.
The best prof I've had. Very humorous, takes an easy pace but still has high expectations, makes history fun. Would recommend to anyone.
Completely useless professor. One of the worst teachers that I have had (and there have been many) at Alberta. There's a reason why she is still a contract instructor.
While this class was an easy grade booster, it was not a university level class. Kerr is not an academic and appears to enjoy listening to herself talk and insulting students over providing insightful and thought provoking material. She might be better off teaching junior high. I am not sure why she has received so many positive reviews.
Useless prof. Does not follow the 190$ textbook WHATSOEVER. Rants on in class about lots of useless information. For tests she will give you a list of terms and when you try to find them you are screwed because she has given no concrete info on them. Some terms aren't discussed in class, aren't in the textbook, and I found myself googling to study.
I love this prof. She's funny and engaged in the material. I would recommend any class she teaches.
After four years, my favourite prof at the U of A. Funny, engaging, very knowledgeable, incredibly well organized. Anyone looking to take history as a major should seek her out and anyone looking for history as an option should as well. Cannot recommend enough.
Organized, sharp, funny and holy cow smart. Take her class, she makes history current.
She's a very nice person but she can't teach to save her life. Attendence is a must as she doesn't follow the textbook and the outlinesnotes she posts online are useless. She talks so fast during lecture that it's hard to take notes and she goes off on random tangents a lot. Many of the terms on the first exam were not even covered in class.
She is a very witty, knowledgeable and funny lady, but that doesn't always translate into being a good teacher. She does go off topic quite consistently, and her lectures and notes do not cover terms on the midterm. She makes history fairly enjoyable, however you really don't learn near as much as you need to for this course. Lots of self teaching.
Linda is knowledgeable and very funny. Her lectures are very disorganized but it doesn't really matter. she sorta followed posted notes and the textbook but not really. Her essay was easy and the quizzes are lists of terms you can just google and memorize. Overall an amazing person, but not the best lecturer.
Linda is a fantastic professor, she is engaging and knows her material really well. She is super approachable and helpful if you don't understand something, even with things like writing. What she asks of her students is very reasonable and she also creates these online videos which are super helpful for studying.
Very pleasant and funny prof. Lots of info in her lectures. She absolutely does give you everything you need to do well on exams, the people who were saying that she does not were probably just not paying attention. Do extra research (yes, actually read a book) and you should get an "A". She can be a little unprofessional, but its not a big deal.
Knowledgeable lectures are a must attend. Puts up online lectures which are extremely useful for exams
Linda is a nice person, but an ineffective instructor. Her lectures were incomprehensible expect long, irrelevant tangents during class. I attended every lecture, and it didn't help one bit. Her Youtube videos are a little easier to follow, but I shouldn't have to hear the same lecture twice to learn a concept once, y'know? Avoid if possible!
Amazing professor and excels at keeping things interesting, even if the topic isn't something you're interested in
Really unorganized
Amazing prof, amazing class. Despite the fact that this class was a typical lecture format, the lectures were amazingly engaging, funny, and insightful. Dr. Kerr managed to bring about understanding of the implications of historical events and persons in a way that was accessible, meaningful, and really hilarious.
The course supposed to be a course which help students to do well in the first school year. But in the classes why we have to learn Canadian historyIt is not relevant at all. The main target of UNI 101/102 is to teach the methods of study instead of history.
Linda Kerr was the best professor I ever had. Her lectures can be a bit unorganized, but that doesnt take away from the class. She is fun, hilarious, witty, and loves what she is teaching. She is approachable and overall wonderful.
She was the most abusive prof I ever encountered while taking my degree. I will remember how horribly she treated me for the rest of my life. Avoid at all costs.
Just to summarize, worst prof ever.
Every time I emailed her outside of class, she was extremely rude and disrespectful. Made me hate her tbh, but its an easy class otherwise.
Instructions are not very clear; she often writes fragments of instructions on her eclass and won’t tell us about it during class.
She’s so very kind and charismatic!!
1. My reading and writing skills have been significantly improved. 2. Linda gave many extensions of assignments. If you need time to review other courses exams, you can email her to extend the deadline for all assignments. (final paper not included).
One of the best profs I've ever had! She makes everyone feel comfortable, brings us treats and is hilarious. Gives you feedback on things you can actually improve on, and when you do improve, your grades will rise accordingly. My reading and writing skills are much more efficient. You can apply what you learn in this class to any discipline.
Nice lady, gives out snacks, good feedback. Marks insanely hard for an intro class and mumbles frequently. I think my writing improved but the textbook is unnecessary and most of her lectures had irrelevant (but sometimes cool) content. Could be condensed immensely, maybe she is a better prof for other classes? 109 itself is useless...
This professor is by far the most unprofessional professor I have ever had in university. Vulgar, coarse, often making comments regarding sexual matters (THIS IS AN ECONOMICS COURSE!!!!), and just made me uncomfortable. Hard marker, who penalized me for disagreeing with her opinion. Avoid this "teacher" like the plague; she's very very immature.
She is an excellent prof. The assignments she gives out take a decent amount of time to complete, but she tells you exactly what she wants from them. This class is an easy A as long as you follow directions! She is also hilarious.
please do yourself a favour if you value your sanity do not take this professor.
She is an enjoyable individual to be in the company of, and her directives for the tasks are consistently straightforward. Additionally, she promptly addresses any inquiries you may have via email.
She's unprofessional, overly touchy, and disorganized. Eclass has 15 irrelevant sections, scattered instructions, and unused mandatory readings. She constantly changes assignment instructions mid-way and grades carelessly with typo-filled feedback. Despite an easy course, her lack of teaching and chaotic style make it unnecessarily difficult.
很好说话,给分高,选她
Her class was a pain because she had so much homework to do.She asked us to write the paper, and she did a lot of the research herself, so when you have your own ideas, she will want you to form your own paper based on her ideas. The class was very boring and the documents required for class were not very clear.
Despite some mixed reviews, Professor Linda's ECON109 class is a solid choice. The workload is manageable, and her teaching style, while at times unconventional, can be quite helpful. unstuck study proved a useful study aid alongside the textbook.
Most people that complain about her just need to grow thicker skin, ivory tower mentality. She's funny and makes class enjoyable to come to. If you put in at least minimal attention/effort then you'll get an easy 70-80% (B- to B+). Only real criticism is that there's too much your graded by, the multiple assignments get kind of annoying halfway in.
I don't get why anyone skips her class. She's passionate, kind, and knows her stuff. She cares about students, gives extensions, offers snacks, and has a cute sense of humour. She clearly explains what she wants, especially for the final paper. If you simply listen to what she says in class and follow her instructions, it's easy to do well.
She seems nice at first but that is only if you do and think exactly as she does. She is more an idealogue than a professor. She constantly inserts her own strong opinions about every topic and goes on long tangents which have little to do with the coursework. The class itself is largely useless since you are learning how to read articles.
She was one of the worst professors that I have had in my entire degree. Her lectures were disorganized and unrelated to the coursework itself. She would make her classes centered on what she thought and how you should think as well. Her grading was often extremely strict with her grading and her feedback could be vague and unhelpful.
Probably the most opinionated teacher professor I have ever had. She made an entire class dedicated to how she thinks and how we should also think like her. She went as far as to tell us which mainstream newspapers we may or may not read in our free time. Otherwise, the class was awful and disorganized.
Avoid this prof. You're just paying money to listen to her opinions
One of the worst professors ever. She doesn't even teach the class, she just stands in front of the class and goes on tangents about things not even related to the course. Worst of all, she marks attendance and expects us to be in class to listen to her unnecessary one-sided discussions. Do not take any course with her, you will regret it.
One of the hardest courses I took, but I definitely liked the professor very much.
Very hard marker, 15 people dropped out first week wish I was one, very unforgiving and wont take in account of your personal situations so pray nothing negative happens within the semester in your personal life. Attendance is not mandatory BUT your graded on it, as in your attendance is going to determine your mark for your actual papers too
save yourself the trouble, she seems to get butt hurt if you dont attend the classes and marks harder due to that
She is a very harsh marker, she seems friendly at first glance but dont let that fool you, half of the class dropped out within a month, I shouldve taken that as a sign and dropped out aswell. She doesnt have any pattern in her marking and doesnt explain why she gives said marks either.
She marks based strictly on attendance, if you dont atend her class often she gets mad at you and marks harsher, she also has a strict bias on everything and if you dont write according to her bias despite your work being good she will dock you marks.
