Professor does not provide a written syllabus and changes requirements for assignments mid-stream all the the time. Number of citations required, type of references required, etc. Your really don't know from one day to the next what it is she wants from you. Also, not helpful and generally unapproachable. Also, non-letter grades for homework.???
Se was a replacement. She did not give clear instructions. She changed her mind continually about assignments, which was confusing. Changed the books the ordinal professor had set. Did not give letter grades for homework, if you got it back at all! Talked endlessly but had nothing to say. If you asked a question she did not like, she got angry.
You have to be totally out of your mind to take her class, period.
King is an up and coming rookie Eng Prof. I had been out of school for 18 years due to Eng classes. After her class I now find Eng to be challenging rather than impossible. Enter her class with even a small desire to succeed and she will work with that, and do her part to keep you motivated to pass her class and move on to the next course.
Disregard any of the negative comments below. She is a great new teacher and works very hard to help every student. She is willing to go out of her way to help any student make up their work. I have been in her class for 201a and currently taking 1a this semester, i can honestly say she is great. If you apply yourself you will find the class easy.
Helpful and takes time out of her own schedule to make sure students are on track. If you go to every class, keep up with the assignments, & read the handouts, it's an easy class to pass. Doesn't have the best time management, so keep the syllabus on you at all times, she doesn't mind being corrected. She's fun & encourages independent thinking.
Great teacher! She is more than willing to meet with any student and great at emailing them back. As far as attendance, if you miss 4 classes in a row you are dropped (at least for 2 days a week classes). She is a newish teacher and eager to try and improve her classes.
She is more than willing to help a student who truly wants to pass her class. I f you are lazy and want your college professor to hold your hand than this is not the class for you. Her class is challenging but you learn some valuable English skills that will come in handy in your next English classes. overall, she is an awesome teacher.
Ms. King is definitely one of the best english teachers I've had teach me before. The passages we read were all extremely interesting and gave useful information. She is super helpful and you can tell that she truly does care about her students succeeding!
Professor King was an overall good teacher. We utilized the book a lot and she picked stories that relate to college students. she is very easy to talk to and gives students a lot of time to complete assignments. i would recommend her for Engl 1A i only wish she taught more upper English classes.
Used very relative and argument-sparking exerts from the textbooks and was always set aside time for her students. Encourages high levels of critical thinking which, for some, can be quite challenging. All in all, a very intelligent, fluent and capable professor.
She really got me interested in English, we debated on some really interesting thing read interested passages. Best English class I ever took.
A teacher who truly cares, will spend time to talk to you and give guidance for making proper academic choices. Lots of organic class discussions and freedom to express opinions. Overall all a general underline theme to all our readings ... Loved all handouts, especially " Against schools" by John Taylor Gatto.
Great class. Pay attention and don't expect freebies. Be prepared to learn a few things you may not have thought about.
Entertaining class, assigned readings very beneficial to expanding my viewpoints (rereading america)and she is available for talking.
Ms. King is a very passionate and engaged instructor. I really appreciated the work she assigned as it was often relevant to the social issues I experienced. I also saw my writing improve as I progressed in the class. She took extra time after class hours to clarify and lend advice on assignments and work. She also valued and encouraged discussion.
Great teacher, encourages class discussion. Uses turnit to track grades and gives ample feed back on essays.
She is a slave-driver, but made herself available to each student for assistance, guidance, and answered all questions. Assigned Four Books, plus many, many additional reads in-class. She was concerned about the student learning correctly, and understanding her course material. Very strict, but effective. I never worked so hard!
She was confusing and a very hard grader. DO Not take her class.
Prepare to be stressed. You will have to do 13 plus essays for this class. She's a very picky grader.
dont take her class she will take up all your time.
King was a good professor, she didn't really follow syllabus but it was never hard to follow her class. Lots of essays and in class writes but overall she wasn't a hard grader. If you feel like you can handle a heavy work load and deal with essay after essay take her class.
I'll admit that this was a challenging class. However, Professor King goes the extra mile to make sure you succeed. The class material she hands out is interesting and relevant to daily life. She is truly a brilliant woman. You'll leave this class with a new perspective. Highly recommend!
Ok, this was a challenging class. However, if you want to chose quality for an instructor Ms. King is the ONE. When I got to her class I was just ready to get the class over with and get out to graduate. But something more valuable happened, I actually left "educated." The real deal!! She is the best "teacher" I ever had in any "school." QUALITY!
Challenging class, but great instructor. She was actually a "teacher." If you are looking for quality this is the ONE!! unless you are a slacker, you will not succeed in this class. You have to step your game up and actually engage in what you will be reading. You will come out of there "educated" for real! It was a blessing for me. Thank God!
I must comment again. I took Professor King's class during the Fall 2013. It was an extremely serious and fast-paced class. I learned a lot about writing, organization, and paraphrasing. To date, I am still getting A's in other classes such as History, Geography, Anthropology, etc. whenever an essay is required.
Prof. King is excellent! She cares about students individually, but equivalently to how much they care about learning! She is very supportive, and I highly recommend forging a friendship with her as you take her class. Follow instructions, and read!!!! Don't be scared to talk during discussions, they can be very interesting when people participate.
I found she is unapproachable and rambles. when I asked her a very simple question I got an ridiculously convoluted answer. she doesn't seem to teach a class as much as she talks at a class. I didn't get the sense that she really cared about anyone.
Ms. King was a wonderful teacher! She was always will to help students if needed it. I really enjoyed taking her class. I got a lot out of the group lectures and really prepared me for my next English class.
Very clear with what she expects. If you need help, she's more than happy to have a one-on-one with you and replies to emails. One time I got a lower grade than I usually do on papers, and she was more than helpful in showing me where I made mistakes and gave me tips for next time. Not an easy class, but it was worth taking with her!
The material she has us read has shown me a very different side of America I haven't seen before, and would not have learned about if I had not taken her class. I can say I've developed so much more of an open mind after coming out of this course. TIP: Show up for help for your essays during her office hours and get that easy A on it!
My writing enhanced with the constructive criticism she gave me. She always expects a lot out of her students because she knows they're there for a reason. I passed with an A and that's because I worked for it.
Great material taught to us. Very relevant information and she stressed the importance of writing in a concise manner. Enthusiastic about her subject, and in the students' participation.
This was my very first class of the semester. I was super intimidated. Prof King made it known that you would have to earn your grade, and I wanted an A. I almost dropped this class. Though at times she appeared slightly intimidating, she continued to offer me helpful advice and encouragement. Ms. King helped me get an A+. She is awesome!!!
You really have to follow her instructions. Be sure, she knows if you do it or not.
She is VERY willing to help, a reasonable grader, and gives decent amount of hw. Make sure you read her feedbacks on your essays and meet with her once every week or so; be expected to know grammar, paraphrasingsummarizing, and MLA; practice your critical thinking skills. Easy class compared to a UC one. Work hard and you can earn your A.
Shout out to Miss King. Really Nice professor and not a very tough grader. A really lazy person like me managed to get a B so just with some more dedication and A is very much reachable. Definetly would take again :)!
Ms. King is an awesome teacher, and she cares about the wellbeing of her students. The class is very structures. Seek her help and participate in class and you will succeed. She is strict, but she's nice. Be prepared to read.
Professor King is very unorganized to me. She likes to tell you a date for an assigned paper, but that date is just to make sure you don't wait until the actual due date to begin your paper. If you need help or clarity she's willing to help to the best of her ability. It's a must that you participate.
Unorganized, arbitrary grading, gets angry and defensive when questioned. Very unapproachable. Illogical, contradicts herself constantly on feedback on essays and assignment requirements. I was a straight A student before I took this class. Take her if you want stress, and your GPA in the hands of chance rather than your abilities and hard work.
Linda King is extremely disorganized and messy. The overall curriculum and readings in class are not hard but she loves to have long class discussions. You mist participate in class. First half of the semester is all about paraphrasing and summarizing. She grades hard on essays and they are worth most of your grade so you have to do really well.
I loved Miss King. She helped me a lot during this semester. Her class is easy, you just have to read the texts and books that she asks you to. She is always willing to help you with anything.
I loved miss King. Shes is the best English Professor ever. She is really helpful and there for you when you need her. I will take her class again and again if I have the chance. Take her, you wont regret it. Its the best class I have ever taken.
If you need a professor that assists you whenever you need help, Mrs. King is the right teacher for you. She has lots of patience with students that are struggling. Nevertheless, she will help you back up. Her class is tough, but she tries to make her class as comfortable as possible.
Sign up for English 1A with professor King if you are prepared (or want) to be challenged in critical thinking. The instructions are clear, and the course is not "get an A" you earn your grade by your writing level and participation (which is a lot). There is help available and Linda King will see to it that you get the help you need to succeed.
Ms. King was a bit intimidating the first week of the semester but i think it was just to ween out a few kids in class. I learned a great deal from her. i was a bit rusty being 8 years out of high school. We read a few books and multiple assigned at home reading for class discussions. A bit crazy of a teacher but i enjoyed being in her company.
She is way too messy. Deadlines and homework are often confusing. Way too much homework. She is a nice teacher but she should be more organized and avoid to change her mind so often.
I came into this class expecting some normal English class where I would write a lot and be tired all the time. Boy was I wrong! One of the best English teachers I have ever had and although she may not be the most organized she definitely put the time into her students. I don't think I could have gotten a better English teacher.
Great teacher, I learned how to really think and push myself. Critical thinking really helps when learning and doing work and thanks to professor King, I learned how to do that. Thank you professor King!! I recommend.
Definitely unorganized. Like some of the people say she says one thing and changes it the next day. She's a hard grader when it comes to essays. Also, she gets mad when someone asks her a question and she tends to put people on the spot. Overall, she confuses the class.
SAVE YOURSELF DON'T TAKE CLASS. Very disorganized and will not give you direct answer. Likes to hear herself talk but is ridiculously unaware of what is actually going on. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Good teacher. She seems really harsh in the beginning but I think it's just a tactic to have some people drop the class. She gives a lot of good feedback and does grade tough. If you take instruction well, do your work and make sure she knows you no reason you shouldn't get a good grade. Lectures can get boring, but the material covered was good.
This class is a lot of work so she really makes you work for your grade. But, she's fun to be around and is willing to help you out in any way you need (very understanding). She wants her students to succeed.
I am international student. I love how she said things straightly on what she wanted us to do. She brought out my best. She kept cheering student who wanted to give up. Love her
Fantastic teacher. She really pushed me beyond what I thought were my capabilities and helped me understand what it means to be a critical thinker. Despite what some people say, she is geared towards ensuring your success, but only if you're willing to do the hard work require for it. If you are looking to actually learn and grow, choose her class.
its a sharp adjustment curve but she does a great job teaching her curriculum and making sure the students who are willing to stick with it and work learn. no tolerance for laziness, dishonesty, or disrespect. first college english class I took, still think it was the one I learned the most from. I felt like I was actually learning things I needed.
If you are not a writer, dont bother taking this class. She wants perfection. If you dont achieve it, its over. Intimidating. Puts you on the spot. Every time I think about writing after taking her class I freak out.
This teacher stuck with me and brought the best out of me. I am a returning student with 40 years between me and high school and found college to be very intimating. Ms King expects the best but you will be the better off for that. I am better able to handle any class that comes my way now. She showed me respect and encouragement that I could do it
Overall, she was a good teacher! She gives you a good feedback and cares about you. Just one thing that I didn't like was that she is sometimes unorganized. Even though the class was hard for me, it was worthy.
Very passionate and inspirational, sometimes sounds tough but in reality very kind and caring about students. Just read the materials and be prepared with homework for each class. Also do not miss extra credit assignments
Great class. Even if you're not a strong writer, she will give you plenty of opportunities to practice and improve. Be ready to put work into your papers, and show her that you are trying, and you will get a good grade. Very friendly, and she was always willing to help me succeed.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Stay away
Horrible. Lost student's papers, failed to convey class structure, never distributed back exams and criticized anyone who disagreed with her views.
She cray. One of the first classes I took at BCC, and I withdrew after a few of weeks. I just finished (and aced) Eng 85A, but I probably wouldn't even have passed this Eng 1A class. She graded completely arbitrarily, handing out a 0 on a whim. She also lost my paper, told me to reprint it, then made an example of me to the class about late work.
Lectures are disorganized and she loses papers. King forget deadlines and never posted grades. Stay away. Do not take her.
I'm not a strong writer so I was scared. I took her class and had to drop out because her teaching style is to listen to her and if you cannot reach her standards, say goodbye to a 2.0 GPA.
She's teaching an English 1A class and constantly loses papers. Her feedback is rude and condescending and King's class structure is so disorganized.
A tough grader but an overall caring teacher who makes you work.
She's very nice and I like the material she gives her students to read. She makes you work for it, but it will help you to become a better writer. One issue I have is that she is very disorganized. Overall though she is a good professor to take if you truly want to become a better writer.
A very tough grader and arbitrary lecturer even though you can learn some writing skills from her. She forces the student to speak on the class which I'm not comfortable with as sometimes people just don't want to make any comments. Overall, I would not recommend you to take her class unless you do not care about your grade would waste your sweat.
Professor King is a very caring professor. I was inspired by her teaching skills and passion. Sure, her lectures are long, due to the amount of essays and books that you have to read. However, it is possible to get an A, just work for it. She really likes students that participate in class (she'll give them extra points). DON'T PROCRASTINATE!!
A lot of papers and homework for a beginners writing class. Forced to participate just to get an A. Not a very smart grading system. All around not a very good professor. Not consistent with giving out instructions. Looses papers. Expects you to automatically know how to write the most "perfect" paper. To high of expectations of students. Stay away
One of those professors you would resent while taking but appreciating afterward. I took her class during my first semester and I didn't click with her initially. However, talking to her after class helped me a ton. I would describe Prof. King as cordial and gregarious. MUST TAKE if you want to improve on your writing!
Great Professor to learn how to make clear and succinct research papers. She always gives advice to newer students such as taking a english workshop; make sure you take this workshop if you want to thrive in this class. Essays are the most important part, however her standards are different compared to other professors that I have had.
I've been out of school for over 5 years and English is not one of my strengths. However, Linda made it easy for me to learn how to transfer my thoughts to paper and to properly write argumentative essays. No question was too "dumb" for me to ask. She is encouraging and wants her students to succeed. Also, our group discussions were fun and lively.
Professor King was a strict professor, that is true. Her class is challenging and she has high expectations, but this just shows that she cares about your writing skills and wants to see you improve. Great text and interesting class discussions.
Fantastic professor who expects the best from every student. English 1A is a perfect fit for anybody who has at least has some interest in writing. Students are expected to participate in class discussions. Students will write two essays, two research papers, and two response papers. The professor is available for office hours. Work hard, get an A.
Professor King was truly something else. I generally am a solid writer so I was never worried about that. But, if writing isn't a strong point for you I suggest you run. It's her way or the highway no exceptions. She also loves to call out students in front of the whole class individually when little mistakes are made on papers.
Linda King is not a good writer. She is disorganized, makes to many spelling mistakes and errors on her papers . Loses papers. Calls out student teachers should never call our students thats bullying if you have personal issue with them address it privately to them not say it in front the class to embarrassed them. She never follows her syllabus
If you are the kind of person who needs to follow a syllabus down to the T, Professor King may not be for you. If you aren't one for participating during class, I'd say skip it. If you want a teacher who cares about you, your grade, and the subject matter, I would definitely take this course with Professor King.
Professor King is great! Really cares about students and opens the table for good discussion. Lots of reading and a few short essays.
i did not have a good experience with her, as there were issues with my grading when i took this class in the beginning of the year. she was hard to communicate with. did not follow syllabus too much and not too understanding.
SHE IS A VERY TOUGH GRADER. GIVES A LOT OF READINGS FOR A WEEK. PARTICIPATION MATTERS BECAUSE SHE CAN RANDOMLY ASK YOU QUESTIONS. HER TEACHING SKILLS IS GOOD BUT DONT TAKE HER IF YOU DONT LIKE TO READ A LOT. I HAVE TAKEN HER CLASS IN SUMMER AND AFTER A LOT OF HARDWORK, I JUST GOT B GRADE. SHE IS CARING BUT GRADES REALLY HARD.
There is a lot of readings but if you love to read youll be fine. Shes very flexible and you can tell she really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She may seem kind of hard on you but she is very approachable and wants the best for her students. Would definitely take again.
Stern, clear, and purposeful but not unkind. King gives sharp, direct feedback paired with praise and encouragement. Sometimes makes long tangents into inspirational speeches soaked in slightly grimy american liberal political takes, but in online classes it's tolerable and everything else is great.
She is a really nice teacher, she values people's opinion and makes sure we always interact (ZOOM). She demands a lot of the work to be done over our free time. It's a fun class and she still was able to give additional time for assignments and tests. A lot of assignments to do all at once, but they are not too heavy. A lot of critical thinking.
This teacher was the worst teacher I've ever had. She would belittle students so much so that they had to drop the class. She would rave in the beginning about how important it is to speak up, share your opinion, and ask questions and then mute you if she didn't agree. She shouldn't be able to teach. I felt traumatized by the end of the class.
Hard class! Review MLA format before you take this class. Annotating the readings helps a lot. Make sure to ask for clarifying questions for each of the essays and follow the rubic exactly. Professor King offers good constructive feedback on each of the essays. Be advised that Ms.King cold calls on students.
She is a great teacher. She is old school, kind, and wants you to succeed. She is unorganized. Earn your grades and you will be fine.
Shes a good teacher but a very tough grader. She expects alot from you even though its a introductory class and will no hesitate to call you out if you mess up. But shes fun and cares about her students and will help you if you ask. Overall, pay attention and learn her expectations if you plan to take her.
