Awesome professor! She actually knows all of our names! Very helpful, in class. The class is really interesting, it is all about drugs. I would reccommend it.
Great prof, cracks jokes, bakes brownies, fun powerpoint lecture. interesting topic to be more informed about.
I love Linda!!
Linda is the best teacher I've encountered at UW yet. She is super friendly, really nice and very patient. Class content is also very interesting. She really knows what she's talking about too.
Linda was a great professor, she knew everyone's name, and was helpful beyond just biology. I could ask her questions about anything, from current events to school happennings. Great professor.

Linda is an awesome teacher. She makes an effort to get to know the students, and she really cares that her students succeed One of the best teachers I had at UW!
SHe was great! totallyreccomend linda! she was super helpful and attended the IC before midterms and finals to help students!
Loved the class and the prof. She was extremely helpful outside class and always willing to help students learn!
She is such a great professor and she knows everyone's name its amazing! It may seem scary at first especially if you are not into science the way I was but now I love it and she definitely changed my mind set in biology! She is just a wonderful person all around and VERY VERY helpful don't forget go to REVIEW SESSIONS!! hehe
I went into this class not caring about biology at all, I needed the FIG. But this class is 75% about drugs and that really interested me. We got brownies sometimes. I didn't like her group work though, so if you get stuck with a bad group then good luck. But other than that, relatively easy to do well in, easy to find help, and very fun.
Awesome, awesome, awesome. There were 150 people in the class and she knew everyone's after a week. No professor cares more about students learning that her, plus the class was interesting.
Linda's the best. She knows everyone's name and offers all the extra help you could want. Easy to do well as long as you're willing to take advantage of the help and go to lecture.
Linda is amazing. She cares more about her students more than any professor I have encountered. If this class fits in your schedule, TAKE IT! Even if you don't have an interest in biology now, you will by the time you leave the class.
Linda rocks! Although her class can get a little tough at time, she offers tons of extra help.
I hate Biology, but I loved this class. Linda is absolutely wonderful; she not only knows everyone's name but takes time to talk to the class and get to know them. She's funny and a no-BS kinda lady. She's fair but very fun and the lecture has a very relaxed atmosphere with great, interesting, challenging content. Take it!
Doc Linda rocks! From popcorn to brownies, fun TAs and Peer Facilitators, illustrated lecture companion and lab manual, and her knowing each student by name, Doc Linda is a fabulous professor who makes Biology so much more interesting and easier to understand. My favorite course by far!
Wicked Awsome
drugs for thugs! linda was amazing and really caring. LOVEHERRRR
Doc Linda's Bio 100 class was a bit on the hard side, but she, alongside her TA's, were extremely helpful with clarifying and helping students understand. She's an extremely fair grader, and she attends EVERY single lab to ensure her students get the most out of it. Awesome professor, I wish she taught some more "lower-level" biology!
Doc Linda is AWESOME! She cares about her students and makes sure to know each by name. Her class is super fun and highly interesting, and she makes cookies or brownies if 100% of the class gets a clicker question correct during lecture. There are labs and hw assignments which help bring up your grade. Easy if you are involved & make an effort.
I would recommend this class to anyone with a spare class to take. Even if you like drugs or not, I'd recommend this class to learn the facts behind it and formulate your own conclusion. Linda makes the class fun, fair and exciting.
Ridiculous. WAY too much work for a 100 level class. There's regular class, plus a two hour lab (with hw), as well as case studies EVERY week (that also have hw). The tests are all fill in the blank..not multiple choice and the final is cumulative. Even though the information is interesting, I would not recommend this class as an easy NW credit.
What a great teacher! Learned the names of EVERY single student. I've never had a teacher CARE this much in the success of her students. However, although it is fun, it is pretty tricky for a 100 level class. make sure you pay attention or you'll be screwed for the final. Lot harder than i thought, but still fun and very useful!
Doc Linda is way fun, a former DJ who now teaches BIOL100 to UW students (no research distractions on the side--100% devoted to YOU). the class is definitely not an easy A, but you'll learn *a lot* and think about what you put in your body (even aspirin). if you are totally not a group project person, do NOT take this class (~4 group projects).
WAY too much busy work. I think she forgot that while bio 100 is the only class she teaches it is not the only class that we (full time students) are taking. Yea the brownies were good but not worth going through the whole quarter constantly filling out 5-point essay reponses and doing group projects (creating skits like back in the 6th grade)
She was a good teacher and I actually enjoyed the labs. I'm not a science person and didn't realize that the class was about drugs when I was signing up but I thought it was interesting. I didn't find that there was too much busy work because the homework didn't take very long and the projects were alright if the work was divided evenly.
Doc Linda is an extremely interesting teacher, on top of teaching already interesting material. Her expectations are very clear and she provides a grading rubric for all projects. She also takes time to answer all your questions until you clearly understand the material. Great teacher.
Whoa, hard class. For a level 100 course, it was SO MUCH WORK. If you aren't on top of all of the work, you'll find yourself floundering. Plus, there are annoying case studies that take up a lot of time, both in class and out of class. But Doc Linda is a sweetie and truly cares about her students. She's awesome, but all the work is not!
Very good lab course! Linda makes sure you understand the logic behind everything you're doing, she help you find a lab to work in, and she's just plain nice. Be prepared for difficult and thorough quizzes and lab reports.
Linda is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Excellent class material and a fun, interesting teaching style. She is always willing to lend a hand and help clarify ideas. This class broadened my interests to include Biology, and even helped me narrow down my major choices. Highly, highly reccommended.
Since the course is about drugs, many students are interested in the material. I was surprised at how hard the tests were for a 100 level course. Averages were around 69/90. She does let you correct the answers you got wrong and get back 1/4 of a point for each. Textbook is expensive and worthless. Just buy the lecture companion and lab manual.
Doc Linda was one of the best professors I have ever had! She was so helpful, knowledgeable and fun-heck she even made us brownies when we answered click questions right! People are overstating how much work is in this class, there is not that much at all and it's not even hard!! Tons of review sessions before midterms and the final ,super helpful!
Doc Linda was such a great professor! I seriously hate biology but after this class I was so interested. She teaches it in a way thats not too difficult and also not patronizing. She knows all of her students by first name, even in a large lecture. Impressive. However, be warned, this class is not easy. And she has a cute dog!
Doc Linda is an awesome professor, in my opinion what every professor should strive for. She is very understanding yet loyal to the fairness of others. Textbook, although is quite entertaining, is fairly useless in terms of exams but there will be a couple questions per mid-term. Ask lots of questions in lab and lecture and you will do fine.
great professor! i was surprised at how hard the exams were. i didn't do so well in the class, but it was honestly really interesting. just make sure you study and attend lecture. the textbook is also a good reference.
She is absolutely amazing, although some students may find her class a little difficult. She's the among the top 3 professors I've ever had. I never knew that I would be so interested in Biology... especially Neurobiology!
At first i hated the class but after a while i got used to it. She barely teaches you anything-it's all group work. And she does cram a lot of stuff in a short amt of time, but in the end, she knew we were all stressed out and made the final aceable. If you do the these test-type questions she has for each case and the study guide, it's not so bad.
This class is group-based. You need to attend every lecture and prepare yourself before class. Professor Martin-Morris is a really friendly teacher. Go to her office hours to ask questions or ask for help if you think you are not doing well. Answer test-type questions. Do "BQMOC"s and executive summaries well. This class is all about them.
Linda is really nice but prepare to be a little frustrated since you will do most of your learning in your group.Linda/TA wants you to find the answer yourself. Come to class prepared for discussion, focus on the figures! DON't buy the book. Look at it in the library if you are confused otherwise wiki will be your best friend!
In this class you learn by yourself with your group- no lecture. There are 2 parts to the class- background biology & PubMed papers. You learn the biol on your own & go over the papers with your group. Confusing at first, but once you see the two parts, it's easy. Not like any other class you've taken, but worth it for biologists & med students.
One of the best profs I had in my four years. Great lectures, and one of the most notable aspects of her performance is that by the end of the third week she had memorized every students name in a 275 person lecture
She is a good lecturer but she makes the study quide sheets really difficult. Overlooking the situation, I didn`t have a strong background in AP chem, plus it taught a lesson not to take classes that I`m prepared for.
She came off as intimidating at times, but she's a GREAT professor. She came to EVERY lab section. She learned everyone's names and was very available and approachable for extra help. Great at making you think rather than lecturing constantly.
She was the lab coordinator for BIOL 200 but was basically another professor/lecturer with Ben Wiggins. Linda is a BOSS and is incredibly helpful. She wants to make sure you understand all of the concepts and is always available for questions or concerns.
I'm in the middle of the quarter (week 4) and I really dislike this class. Morris does not really teach the class anything and relies on group work for people to learn. You have to do a lot of self studying and she is not clear what we have to know for the midterms. She also makes us write summaries after each unit and is harshly graded. Avoid!!!!
She does't teach you anything at all! It is called "active learning" which is code for students teaching students. You pay to teach yourself things you don't yet know! The structure of this class makes no sense at all. Don't ask questions, she won't know the answer! Expects you to know things on tests that were never brought up in projects or class
You do most of what would normally be taught in lecture independently via pubmed papers and online. Great class for grad school prep and learning how to be successful gathering information independently. Exam expectations were unclear and grading can be a little nit-picky. Otherwise, I would highly recommend Linda and this class!
She is a great teacher, but her TAs are hard grader and it took me half a quarter to figure out what were the expectations. Exams are fair but the study guide is useless and just a decoy (1/5th of studyguide is useful). I really enjoy all the crucial skills I have learnt in the class. Her class will well prepare you for other upper level Biology.
I left this class learning nothing about molecular biology. The only thing you learn is how to read a scientific paper. Expectations were a mystery the entire quarter. I never had an idea of what I was expected to know for this class.
Linda is an amazing professor. She gives very helpful feedback and very understanding. This was my first online class and I thought it was going to be tough since its Biology but she makes it really interesting and the readings and lessons are very organized. If you do the readings and follow up on conferences or office hours then you're fine.
The whole quarter is group work. Terrible "flipped" class set-up where students just discuss things in class, Doc Lina doesn't actually teach. Hope for a great TA who doesn't follow everything Doc Linda says. Take tests online sitting in class, make sure you have a laptop or tablet for every class. Get ready to decode confusing scientific papers.
Doc Linda is the most loving and supportive teacher at UW! The discussion-based class environment isn't always the most efficient way to learn, but at the end of the day she makes sure everyone is on the same page about what they need to know. She doesn't do cumulative finals, gives you clear ideas of what's on exams, and has a ton of office hours.
A main parts of the class involve group work with the first twenty minutes of the class involving a "lecture" whereas the next thirty minutes is pure discussion and teaching with your table group with a student-flipped style. If you put in the time and effort to participate and go to office hours, you will do well.
How easy the class is will depend on how competent your group is. But if you're good at interpreting research papers you're fine! It's not the easiest class but very reasonable if you can do all the given work. She can be frustrating at first since she doesn't really teach but it really helps for future classes!
355 is one of the best classes that I have taken at UW. She does a lot group work type of learning where students teach each other. For me it really helped because I had difficulty asking professors for help thinking the teacher would think I'm not smart. But she really is there to help and she's always talking about how there are no dumb questions
Her classes: Great; Her: not so much. She's so incredibly condescending. She makes you feel stupid for asking most questions even though she says there isn't a dumb question. She thinks she is clearer than she is, so when you ask her to clarify, she gives you a condescending reply. The flipped classroom worked for me, but it really depends on you.
As long as you are confident in your reading abilities and your ability to understand data you will ace this class. Doc Linda only lectures for about 20 minutes a day so if you're a person who needs everything spelled out for you by the prof this isnt your class. If you're a strong reader and independent learner then its an easy A.
If you follow her syllabus, you will do fine. Grading depends on your TA mostly, some are more lenient than others, but overall you will do well if you pay attention, come to class every time, and do the reading. She is great with questions though she will make you think instead of just giving you the answer. Super approachable, would take again.
Linda is an amazing prof. Work hard on group projects and follow the rubric. Go to class every day and do all of the homework and you will get a good grade!
I'm an average guy. While Dr Linda is a nice person, to me, the class kind of sucks. Peer teaching is a terrible way to learn and most of grading/success will depend mostly on the TA... That being said, while everyone is confused and the class sucks to struggle through, the exams aren't terrible. I'd say, if you're ready to tough it out, itll be ok
Doc Linda seems to be a good person, but her method of teaching and grading are just awful. I have never been more frustrated by a teacher's complete lack of desire to help us understand content. When you ask questions in class she gets annoyed and tells you she talked about that yesterday, and you get graded on phrasing of answers on tests.
Linda is a great teacher. Your success in 355 depends on YOU to take initiative if you are struggling. She is super accessible and helpful if YOU reach out to HER. She is flexible and accommodating. Ask questions and participate in class, you will do fine--her use of a flipped classroom is a great way to prep students for a career in science.
Love her! The class material is definitely challenging and the style of teaching need time to get used to but as long as you follow the instruction and seek help when need it. It is not bad at all and the skill I took from this class help me so much with reading papers and doing research!
Really cares about her teaching and if students are learning, very approachable, awesome lady.
She refers to herself as "Doc Linda" all the time, she doesn't really answer your questions when you ask, she gives video quizzes that are due before class and sometimes they don't make sense, and theres one test thats super hard and one group project thats easy. I took Bio 105 during its first Q offered, Doc Linda was very nice and approachable.
Clear expectations, always open to talk. Real gem!
Worst teacher I have ever had.
Professor Linda does not give any meaningful feedback, and this really became a problem as her grading criteria was extremely unclear. For example the whole class got several of the same questions wrong on our only exam because the question was unclear, and nothing was done to resolve it. Although she is nice, I would not recommend.
I can tell that Linda has good intentions, but her personality and teaching style does not work for me. She has a tendency to be sarcastic but it usually comes across as rude. The class materials were very unorganized and incorrect and you can tell she didn't proofread them. She's a harsh grader. This lab is NOT for people who are new to labs.
content is useful for wet lab assays. There is very little instruction aside from just 60mins of panopto videos. The rest is reading protocols. No study structure, just a quiz every week that tests you on fine details not accessible elsewhere. The teacher herself either dismisses questions entirely or acts rudely or condescendingly when asked.
Had Doc Linda in Spring 2020 for BIOL 492, which is a VERY different class than her normal BIOL courses. Overall, BIOL 492 dealt with difficult and complex topics surrounding identity and equity, but the course overall was easy to succeed in. Lots of opportunities to make-up lost points, rubrics for every assignment, no curve. A good class!
Rude, agitable, pretends to come off as friendly but actually isn't. Inconsistent, and soon enough when it is too late to change courses her true colors show. Many of the techniques in class are often outdated. Maybe she was better in her heydays, but in my course she was nitpicky, hated receiving questions, and an overall unpleasant instructor.
Tough grader. I was sick and there were no accommodations made. She makes a class tough for no reason. I would not recommend! She is also very rude for no reason and calls students out during class for the littlest of things, someone was just looking and she said why are you rolling eyes!
Unclear grading criteria
very unapproachable and we feel like we can't ask her questions because of this. woke lib, which is good, but that doesn't make her teaching style and overall style approachable, especially for those that have questions and suggestions. weird classroom climate where she likes you if you constantly agree with her and complain!
extremely difficult to contact the teaching team and get feedback. her office hours filled with questions unrelated to class, needs to focus in on class. hard to get feedback on how to improve or anything with the TAs. extremely difficult to communicate.
Likes to often bring politics and her own opinions of them into class. Super condescending and will cut you off if you have an opposing opinion/view. Super unclear grading structure with vague rubric, but grades very harshly. Do not take.
This class was a lot more work than anticipated for only 1 credit. While the topics covered were interesting, most were dry and felt long. We have presentations which take a lot of time outside of class and are hard to balance especially with other exam-heavy classes.
Unclear grading criteria and difficult to reach... I took a seminar and it was a lot more work than anticipated. Not approachable. Recommend another class if it's your final year in biology.
Registered for this class since topic seemed interesting, but it's been meh so far (a good portion dropped after the first day). I suspect grade distributions have changed since previous quarters, as there is more work and effort needed than expected for 1 credit seminar.
Would not classify class as a seminar. Agree with other reviews about workload for 1 credit. Tough grader and little accommodations for sickness.
Not a seminar. Get ready to read. Grading criteria unclear and hard to reach/ask questions.
She doesn't have clear grading criteria and needs to add changes to the syllabus. Also, very little accommodations as well for disabled students. For someone who talks about liberalism and equality-- this was included in this class. She is super picky grader--presentation, notebook, and many other important assignments were graded unfairly, hastily
You might read some negative reviews about Doc Linda, I get it but I don't agree. It took me a little while to warm up to her, especially because I thought she didn't like me, but Doc Linda CARES. This is a person that puts their heart and soul into education. 492 is a subjective class to grade, but she recognizes effort. Fantastic prof.
Doc Linda is an amazing professor. I've taken several of her classes and I think I can make some fair comments. Her classes are never "easy 4.0s" because they shouldn't be. I know that sounds hypocritical, but students don't take classes just for the grade, and professors shouldn't have to lower their standards just to make everyone "successful".
Workload is too unreasonable for a 2-credit class, be ready to spend 10 hours every week. Very unclear expectations and vague rubrics. Harsh grader, gives 0 marks for little mistake. No late assignments, and grading is very unfair, especially for group projects. AVOID. Take it with another professor if you can.
Doc Linda was by far my favorite professor at UW. She is receptive to students struggling and takes the extra step to teach thoroughly. The class was very engaging. This was my third class with her and any class she teaches I would recommend.
