This instructor is awesome! She makes the concepts very easy to understand. If you do your assignments and pay attention you should get a good grade.
This professor is very helpful and really likes to see her students do well.
Very good instructor, tests can be difficult.
The hardest working professor in Sociology! She helps students both in and outside of class.
This professor is too cool. She is dedicated to helping students in class, out of class, about sociology, not about sociology. There is no other teacher in Vista that I reccomend as highly as Linda McAllister.
She roots for the underdog no matter what, which is great for students. However, she victimizes her minority students by giving them handouts 3 or 4 times and allowing students to only attend class often enough to stay enrolled in order to receive financial aid if they so choose. She is entitled on behalf of minority students in excess.
I love this professor! It turns out Sociology is way more interesting than other subjects at Vista. What's up with some of these ratings? Prof. McAllister gave us extra copies of the assignments if there was any chance we did not have them. How is that bad? These comments are crazy!
i love linda mcallister so much that it makes me want to cry. she is SOO good at her job, every monday and wednesday it blows me away. the class is pretty easy, too, but for those who don't think so she is endlessly available to meet. she rocks my world.
actually the best teacher i've ever had. i LOVE HER. shes funny and entertaining. if she jumped off a bridge i'd prolly do it too. TAKE ANY CLASS BY HER. i guaruntee she teaches it better than any other teacher could.
Probably the best professor at school. Very entertaining during lectures helps time go by faster. Only reading required and her test. No homework. Review for all test prior week. Very helpful. Has office hours for students and begs for appointments to be made. Establishes great relationship with her students. Can email her any time even o
I LOVE THIS TEACHER! she is so sincerely nice, patient, and helpful. take scrupulous notes for studying for tests or you may get lost (she does go a little fast in class because she is so enthusiastic).she's endlessly available for help. unfortunately (for us) she's having a baby this fall and won't be there to teach. but when she's back, take her
Linda McAllister rocks, just that simple. She wants you to get it, and not just for your grade. I wound up majoring in Sociology because of her.
SHe is awesome- absolutely fabulous lectures. All of have to do is come to class and pay attentions. No homework except for about an hour of reading! You will truly love Sociology after taking her class. Guaranteed! As for the grade, you can easily get an A if you study for the exams. She even gives out the essay questions beforehand.
gosh i hope she teaches other things too. if i could just have her teach all the subjects for me to graduate, i would do it! shes pretty much perfect when it comes to teaching.
One of the best profs I've ever had! Originally a Business major, but after her class, am now a Sociology major. She really cares about students, and provides enormous amounts of resources to help students succeed. Class discussions were always extremely lively and interesting. Take any class from her you won't be disappointed!!!!
Good teacher, Fair grader, average work load. I learned a lot in her class. I liked that her lectures included videos, it helped to keep me interested. She helpful if I got stuck and fast at returning emails.
She 's really helpful, friendly and funny. She 's willing to help you to thoroughly understand the topic.Just try to take notes and do as much as assignments as you can but actually do not much. She even gave you the essay topics beforehand to prepare for the exam. Not hard to get an A!
Very enthusiastic teacher, very energetic especially when she gets into the lecture. U must read the articles, and good idea to go over them before the exam. try to do participations early on in the semester, they are easier than the later ones. all in all this was an interesting class. She likes volunteered personal stories dealing w/ topic.
Hard, perhaps weird/annoying grader. One of those teachers that would take off .3 pts for random reasons. I often got grades like 8.4/10. Attendance mandatory. Made us fill out an extremely long survey at the end of the semester. Takes forever to respond to e-mails, if she does at all. Very annoying person in general.
Some of these comments are weird and annoying! Dr. McAllister was extremely nice and super responsive to emails, even on weekends. Every assignment had a crystal, even painfully, clear rubric with all the answers and points. 8.4/10 sounds like 84%. What's that, a B? Hello! Dr. McAllister delivered a better course than my UC SOC into!
A very nice woman!Good hearted.I worked hard and I didn't get an A which I deserve, because she is a bad grader.Even if you finish her field assignment which is time consuming and her final paper which is a question from the first class to z last. Her class is tough not the course.I don't recommend at all if you want to get a good grade.Very demandin
I loved this class. Linda is extremely helpful and her classes are interesting and fun. She gives out study guides and test questions at the beginning of the semester. The tests are challenging, but not impossible. She grades on a curve. Final paper is a sociological biography, which can be fun if you like to write. However, slackers beware!
I took Dr. McAllister's hybrid class. Had an excellent experience! She is very thorough, interactive, interested, and took the time to respond to every e-mail I sent. Very passionate! You Will think outside the box in this class. Lots of writing, lots of research..my wife had our 2nd baby in the middle of class..worked hard for my A! +Recommend++++
she is such a sweet and caring teacher. she cares so much about her students and puts in so much effort to make sure every student understands what is going on. replies quickly to e-mails, also. just a great person who you can learn a lot from. i tried very hard and still received a B because the tests are pretty challenging. you will learn a lot.
This is the worst teacher to have if you have other classes that are more difficult. I took the online course and she gives you enough work to last a life time each week. The reading isn't hard but she grade hard
she is the best
Extremely friendly and knowledgable about everything we learn in class. Lectures are engaging and interesting, even theory-heavy ones. Moderate online moodle work, somewhat difficult exams. Overall one of the best classes I've taken at BCC.
Extremely knowledgeable, engaging and helpful. I wasn't sure I would like Sociology but she turned me into a fan. I'm back at a my 4 year college and in the first class, an event Dr McAllister taught us about was mentioned and I was the only one who knew about it. You WILL learn if you apply yourself and that's what college is all about, right?
I took her online course for Sociology. Her assignments are very simple and organized. She is a timely grader as well as a very helpful with open arms teacher even if it's an online course. She sends occasional reminders thru email and is very nice, thorough and gives feedback. An writing assignment due per 2 weeks. Only need required to do 5/7.
Not recommended! There is a ton of reading. The assignments are unclear, long, and extremely boring. Her lectures are unfocused and she goes off on tangents constantly. Do yourself a favor and find another professor.
Couldn't be nicer or more helpful. I took her online course. Easy weekly forums and only had to do 5 out of 7 assignments (we could do more and then she would use our highest grades). Generous & helpful and she manages to make the online classroom fun & personal. I learned a lot and got an A! What could be better? One of the best at BCC! Take her!!
Her lectures are enjoyable but the exams are extremely difficult. Expect to study an intolerable amount to get an A.
Took Dr. McAllister's online course and had many in-person conferences with her. She sent out weekly email reminders, responded quickly to email inquiries, and provided clarification when needed online and in-person. Five out of seven papers required, weekly participation in online forums, and--best of all--no final exam in this online course.
Awesome teachers. It's a difficult class, and the tests are rough but for psych or soc majors this is the way to go. She makes herself very available for help and she is friendly and welcoming. She is experienced and passionate about sociology and that makes this class much more interesting. Took Soc 8 with her as well, loved it!
McAllister is the most inspiring educator I've had. I took Soc of the Family to fulfill a requirement, and ended up taking Crime and Deviance, and then ended up a Soc major. Her class isn't easy, and you'll work hard for an A, but if you want an easy A, you should go back to high school. Don't like the amount of reading? Too bad. THIS IS COLLEGE.
I recently transferred to UC Berkeley and I took McAllister's class at BCC. She is a fantastic teacher that is dedicated not only to the field of Soc, but to prepping students for transfer. Midterms and reading loads i've had at UCB are IDENTICAL to McAllister's class. She intentionally makes the class difficult to ensure your future success!
This has by far been one of the best classes I have taken in college. Interesting and very informative. Dr. McAllister is an amazing teacher, gives great feedback, assignments are clear, grading is fair. The quizzes can be a bit tricky but if you read the chapters and use the study guides you'll do fine. 14 quizzes, 1 forum/week, 2 out of 3 papers.
Linda was an amazing professor. I took her class online, and she was always available for questions. She seems like an amazing person. If you need help, she will work with you and help you, but you should contact her early if your struggling with the course or the essay.. I would recommend her.. I enjoyed her online class, and learned a lot..
She has had so much interesting and inspiring life experience that contributes so much to her class. One of the best teachers ive ever had.
Sociology 1(online), 8, & 13 because she is awesome! Her stories are personal BUT they go with the lecture and she has great stories and a lot to give. To pass her class defiantly use the study guide, keep on top of the reading, and go to her office hours. She will clear up any questions you have. Also during test if you have a question she helps.
Dr. McAllister is very nice, but her tests are extremely tough, and can be quite scary to take. Make sure you get the textbook she requires, and start actually looking at the book, and reading some of the chapters. She grades extremely hard.
Professor McAllister is extremely tough. Her lectures are very lengthy, and she talks extremely fast. It is hard to figure out what to write for notes. I would not suggest taking her class, unless you are absolutely confident that you can do well.
Amazing class. super nice person.
Great teacher, clear program and lots of opportunities to pass the class.
I took her because of the good reviews here and am completely satisfied. She is passionate about the subject and that transmits. She will always answer e-mails and questions. She gets you to think about how your life relates to the sociological perspective. Admittedly a lot to read but worth it, it will broaden your view. Will take her other class
She is a wonderful professor. The material is very interesting and fun to discuss. If you are taking the class online, there are mandatory weekly forums that we discuss the reading which is always fun to know how others feel about the weekly topic. She really makes you think, but it's easy considering there is no wrong answer.
Great professor! Very knowledgeable and passionate. Read the text, come to class, sit up front, and ask lots of questions! She speaks a little fast at times. Her multiple choice exams are hard ("a, b, c, a & c, b & c" type of Q's ). There is also a writing portion for each exam. Not an easy A. but it's possible. Overall 8/10
THE BEST professor i've ever had at any school, ever. her tests are really hard but you learn so much. she genuinely cares about you as a person, not only as a student. she doesn't demand you participate in class, she wants you to be comfortable. helped me a lot outside of class w school decisions. mcallister is the besttttttt
Great professor! Linda is an amazing human being and her classes are interesting and inspirational.
Best class I have taken at BCC. McAllister is super smart and an incredibly nice person. She clearly loves her job and is really helpful. NOT an easy A but totally worth it. She will will also help you with things like personal statements and transfer questions.
Best professor ever!
I loved this course! I took her Sociology 08 course online and it was a lot of work, but it was interesting. There was assigned reading every week, plus a discussion forum and quiz for it. There were also 3 major writing assignments and you had the choice to opt out on one. Overall, McAllister is a great professor!
This was one of my best classes I have taken, she very passionate and is there to help all her students. Quizzes are not hard if you read, and you only have to do 1/3 essay and weekly forums are mandatory. Definitely take this class it's not difficult.
McAllister is delightful and makes all material relevant and interesting. All her classes are excellent. Tests are difficult, but not impossible, and there are study groups. She's always accessible by email.
mcallister is honestly one of the best teachers i've ever had! she's enthusiastic and passionate about the material, and is always happy to discuss anyone's thoughts or questions. she's clearly invested in her students' success and is a generous grader as long as you're putting the effort in. i can't wait to take more classes with her!
The Leslie Knope of teaching, she is an amazing professor!!!!
The best morning class I have ever taken. This professor is wonderful. Very lively, intelligent, and funny. You must read the entire text. Your tests score WILL reflect your reading- promise. Tons of participation opportunities and study sessions. Tests are HARD- you must really show full comprehension of material to get full marks. Stellar class!
McAllister is an amazing professor, by far the best I've ever had. She is passionate, inspiring, and so knowledgeable. I came into her class a political science major and left a sociology one. Her tests are hard, but she is extremely accessible and caring. She cares about her students and wants them to do well. 10/10.
This class was amazing! It was one of my first classes at BCC. I'm so glad I took this class. She is so nice. The tests are based on the reading so get ready to read! She also gives a study guide for the tests which are super helpful! All in all, she does make you work for your grade but the material is very interesting, would definitely take again!
Mrs. McAllister is such a remarkable teacher. Inspirational. Helpful. Fun. She's a true gem. Her sociology class was one of my favorite classes in college. BRAVA!!!
I took Prof. McAllister's online Crime & Deviance class so I didn't spend any time with her, but she was helpful when I needed clarification and her feedback was always relevant and interesting. The class was quite difficult due to all the reading and the online quizzes. But she was always very generous with her grading. Definitely recommend.
EASILY TOP 10 PROFESSORS OF ALL TIME! TAKE HER! Don't hesitate, it takes a little bit of extra work, but its totally worth it, she is an amazing human being, Seriously what are you waiting for, just sign up for all of her classes already. Take it specially if your not soc major, it will open your mind and possible change your career. i love her!!!!
She is amazing! Very educated! She knows what she's talking about and very passionate about it! She cares for her students and gives a lot of opportunities to raise your grades up!
McAllister is amazing! She is well educated and really cares about her students. Such a fun class.
I take an online class about the intro to sociology this semester, and it's not difficult to get a high grade. There is weekly graded discussion online, and there are three writing assignments per semester. The instruction is very clear, just follow what she says and will get a good grade. And she is highly knowledgeable. Read the textbook also.
Truly passionate about her subject. I wasn't sure if I wanted to take a sociology class (I just needed the credits) but she made it such a good experience. She's very nice (even sweet!) but her grading is relatively tough so be sure to study hard for tests.
Favorite prof ever! Linda is a really engaging lecturer and is careful to break up the three hours with videos, breaks, discussions etc. She clearly wants you to succeed and structures the grading system to help you improve ie weights test scores high to low and high value on participation. She's super friendly and learns your name immediately
Dr. McAllister is awesome! She is so amazing and sweet, and really cares about her students. You can always talk to her, she is very understanding. You can get a good grade if you work for it. Do the readings each week. She hands out a study guide for the exam the very first day of class. Start working early on it, so the workload isn't too much.
Took her online intro to sociology class and it was great. The chapters were long but interesting, one chapter per week, and one discussion and quiz per week. I believe the lowest three of each discussion/quiz is dropped from overall grade. Only 1 of 3 writing assignments are required. Overall, great teacher, easy class if you read and do the hw
Second time taking a class from McAllister- she's incredible! C&D is really interesting and she teaches with a mix of theories, videos, real life connections, etc. The tests are straightforward and easy if you study, plus she drops your lowest writing grade and weights the MC/short answer to help you do well. The reading is a lot but helps teach.
McCallister is a great lecturer, she makes them interesting and is always open to questions if you're lost. As long as you study for tests you will do well in the class. She cares about her students and gives lots of participation opportunities. ATTENDANCE DOES MATTER for her class.
I love McAllister, shes a wonderful and super fun professor, and the reason i got into sociology. She offers lots of participation opportunities, that are super easy to do, but dont slack! Make sure you read the books, and pay attention to lectures, because she will test you! She genuinely wants students to learn, and also brings candy to tests.
McAllister is a wonderful professor. For me, I found the subject to be hard to follow because it can be applied to so many different scenarios but I was lucky to have her. Great personality, passionate, and really makes you think. Don't skip class, lots to go over. Participation is wise! I found note taking best w/my laptop dlding the SGuide.
She is so great! But man get ready to read. If you don't, the tests will NOT be easy...
Professor McAllister was recommended to me by someone who had taken her before, and I was very happy with the course. She is lively, engaging and cares about her students. Classes were interesting and enjoyable. Grading and tests were clear and fair. She really enjoys the material, and wants students to learn and succeed.
I just love Linda. I took her for intro to sociology, crime and deviance, and death and dying. She is an amazing professor. She only gives you 3 exams the entire semester that is based on a combination of her lecture, and the book(s) we read. If you take good notes and study, you will get an A. I would take any class she teaches.
Let's be real. Show up, slides, abstract conversation, and an A. Or B if you were sleeping. If you like circular theory without conclusion then this is your class. Really there isn't anything special. Even the author of the textbook is a total sham, keeps rolling out new books based off of... lord knows what. I give this class a solid 6.5/10. EasyA
This is the best professor I have ever had. She is kind, funny, and incredibly fair. She wants all of her students to succeed and does everything she can to help them do so. She is who I want to be when I grow up. Can't say enough good things about her.
She reads your writing and gives thoghtfull feedback. She sends out lots of emails reminding you of work.
I had her for SOC1, SOC8 (online) and SOC18 and she's a real gem at BCC! Her lectures and choice of class books to read are thought-provoking. I've cried a couple times in her SOC18 class watching assigned documentaries and doing HW. Her SOC18 class was honestly life-changing to me. I thought she was challenging but well worth taking so study hard!
Unless you want an ungodly amount of work, DO NOT take this class. 50+ pages of reading every week, papers EVERY week that are impossible to get 100% on, and HARD quizzes every week. I probably spend 10+ hours on this class alone. I have taken numerous classes at multiple UC's and have never spent this much time on a single class. Ridiculous.
I like that she communicates with students. If you are about to miss a deadline she let's you know. Lots of feedback Textbook is hard but she has a study guide
An interesting class, with a clear structure, that is formatted nicely for an online class. The Professor rewards effort.
one of the best professors ive ever had, take her
Legendary! McAllister is one of the most engaging teachers I have ever had. She brings such fascinating stories into her classes and seems to cultivate a personal relationship with her students. I wish I could go back to community college to take a class with her again. You WILL learn, and you will get a lot out of her class if you put in the work.
I took McAllister in Spring 2021. She assigns so much reading, weekly (tough) quizzes, and 4 media papers. The good things out 4 papers, she requires 1. The quiz questions are not similar to study guide questions so you really need to dig deep into the text. For discussions forums, she takes off so many points for dumb reasons. Same for essays.
Not my highest grade, but no regrets. A lot of reading on very heavy materials (took the death and dying class), but she is clearly both passionate and knowledgeable about her field, and it shows in her lectures. Also very sweet and caring: she gave us candy and donuts during our exams and gave us handwritten notes at the end of the sem.
Personally I wish this professor wasn't such a strict and tough grader. Responses are mandatory with her class with 100 word minimums and you must touch on every single thing that SHE wants you to respond to specifically. To me this class could have been a lot more fun, unfortunately the professor seems pretty bent on making it lame.
Her class was easy and communicative. It was also very educational and insightful. I would definitely take her Soc 1 and 8 classes again.
Loved this class. Professor is very understanding and helpful. Uses real books instead of a textbook.
Very cool professor, I think it was a very manageable load of work. she is extremely kind and always available.
Ms. McAllister is so great, she genuinely cares about her students and the material she teaches. She really wants you to succeed and will make sure you do well in her class. She is so nice and creates such a warming environment plus the classes she teaches are really cool
I loved Prof. McCallister's class! She was super funny and the class was very engaging. The exams were open book, so you just had to take notes to pass or excel. She also played interactive jeopardy for extra credit points. You could tell she genuinely cared about her students and the class. I would recommend her to anyone.
This class is literally the best class I've had in my college experience so far. She's really sweet and funny and super understanding of student circumstances. Her assignments are all really clear and she gives so much help and time to prepare for exams. She really wants her students to succeed and her class reflects that. Would 100% take again.
She is very tough on grading, you must master all concepts of this course in order to get full marks. If you do your readings (WHICH ARE VERY LONG) and watch the videos, you'll probably get an A. Just know that she wants you to be very clear and explain every length of the questions.
McAllister is an AMAZING prof! She is such an incredible person and extremely knowledgeable. She is also very willing to work with students to ensure that class is enjoyable. Her lectures are always enjoyable and engaging. The readings she assigns for Soc 8 are always intriguing. Exams were not rough and somewhat enjoyable!
Brilliant and thoughtful educator and the textbook was really enjoyable. McAllister's passion for the subject is evident and the classwork and materials are exceptionally well-organized. She gives personalized feedback on discussion submissions and participates in the discussions herself. Informative and relatively easy class - highly recommend.
I took the asynch class. The textbook is very dense and difficult to read, but as long as you can understand the terms and concepts you will be just fine. She is very strict about due dates but you are always given a lot of time. She drops your three lowest tests and discussion boards, and you only have to write one paper. 100% would take again.
I have taken Intro to Sociology, Sociology of Deviance, and Sociology of Death and Dying with Dr. McAllister. She strongly focuses on growing your sociological imagination. I find her grading to be supportive of exploring new connections. I feel she fosters a positive, encouraging, adventurous learning environment!
Gives fun discussion questions. It made me consider sociology as a career because I loved the class so much. book analysis, you don't have to read the book too much cntrl+F (this cuts out 40% of it, and you still have to write well. They aren't easy). So clear on directions it's very easy to get high grades. Comments on everything. love it so much!
Tough grader, very picky in giving grades. Require more than perfection, above and beyond to get A's for assignments. There is no test,
Best online class experience ever. Organized schedule, clear expectations, super interesting material. Encourages genuine connection in discussions, and it shows. Loves her work, cares about students, puts so much effort and thought into the class. Frequent deadlines, lots of chances to earn points. 10/10, you'll get out of it what you put in.
Super tough Grader. I would not take her again at all. Papers and were due right after quizzes, the reading was super overwhelming, and if you are an adult who has a family or are in the SAS program just don't do it. It's way too much. Her classes are for 18yr olds, fresh out of high school, not adults going back to school to further themselves.
I took McAllister for ENG 101 and she was fantastic! As long as you pay attention in class, do your homework, and listen to her feed back, you'll do great. She's very understanding and easy going as well.
Professor McAllister is the BEST. Her lectures and discussion topics are very engaging and make you really think about the taboo topics surrounding death and dying. She is part of the reason I changed my major and I can't wait to take another class with her.
Weekly discussion and quizzes and two papers. Class is super organized and easy to follow. Professor is very understanding
McAllister is a brilliant professor, but her grading can be quite tough. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of the readings and watch the videos. I found unstuck AI helpful for quiz prep alongside the class materials.
Professor McAllister is the reason I switched majors to sociology. Her lecture style is so amazing and I love how she incorporates real world issues and humor into her class material. She also is a very fair grader, and tests are somewhat easy if you pay attention. Would take her class again.
VERY TOUGH GRADER! when I took her class, she almost requires perfection from students so be ready to give your best effort in her class! I don't say it's bad, but if you take more than 3 classes in one semester it could be challenging to give her class priority especially if it's not one of the core classes in your major!
Interesting class and the professor is very nice. Grade is mostly on exams. Exams weren't easy but they are curved.
