Take lots of notes, not a bad teacher just thinks everyone loves philosophy as much as she does(not true).
Not a morning person.
Actually a hot teacher, strict but not unnecessarily so. You must take a lot of notes and do the readings to get by in the class. You can not do it if you don't! There are quite a few readings too and sometimes they are boring. Overall though a very interesting class and a good teacher who gets you critically thinking.
I really disliked this professor. I don't recommend her. Her class is boring, her lectures are too difficult for a first year class, and she is not very nice to her students. Sorry Linda, but you should improve your teaching methods.
this teacher is by far the worst professor, she is not only unapproachable but also gives useless lectures and conversates with 1 or 2 students throughout the entire class and calls it a lecture. she claims that her lectures are mandatory, but if you show up, all she does is waste time. She is rude to her students through email.
DROP HER CLASS! Linda doesn't understand that this is a first year course. Philosophy is her passion so the whole course is based on it. She gives article readings EVERY CLASS ontop of that you have to read the novel she assigns AND online quizes. The amount of effort you have to put into passing is like a 4th year course 3 hours every night.
Hard class. Not a fan of her teaching methods. She tends to build relationships with 2-3 students and usually focuses on them during a class. She assigns way too many readings and novels. The practice quizes are almost useless, yet still worth marks. C'mon Linda, loosen up a bit, you're philosophy isn't at all interesting.
I truly enjoyed Linda's class. She does expect a lot from her students, but lets be honest, this isnt highschool people! She is helpful during office hrs and by email. She is a sarcastic person, so beware that her sense of humour may not be funny to you. I love Linda though. Show up, work hard, and her class can be fun. I also learned so much!!
People need to stop writing that teachers are hard and give large course loads.. IT IS UNIVERSITY!! She was an awesome teacher. Tells you exactly what she wants in essays, assignments, and tests. If you show up to class you will get a good mark. She is clear and precise, alllllways there to help when someone needs it. I recommend big time!
Linda was an awesome prof and left a pretty profound impression on me. She is a uni prof and teaches like one and I enjoyed the fact she challenges you to actually think. Ummmm, isn't that why we're in Uni? To learn to think out of the box. I would recommend her class anytime.
She's not prepared for her class, usually repeats herself when she has nothing more to say because she will not let us leave early. Teachers as if class is a 4th year cousre when it is a foundation GNED. Very different marking style compared to most teachers, not very clear what she wants. I would suggest avoiding this class.
Excellent prof. Clearly outlined expectations for papers and exams. There were many lessons in the class that everyone can apply to their own lives.
Took class in the spring and though it was very content filled, I surprisingly enjoyed the class. She adds her passion within the lecture. If you actively listen/participate in her lectures and do the work required you will do great in the course. Tells you exactly what to expect on tests. Gives you a fresh perspective on life with her lectures.
Not a good professor- very hard content for a first year class. Doesnt use any resources (like powepoint), just lectures off a paper in front of the class. if you miss a class your in trouble. She what is on the quizzes, but then adds things she didnt mention. avoid her at all costs as you need to put in a lot of work to get a B in first year class
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR HER CLASS!!!!!She just stands there for 40 minutes of the class hoping someone will talk. Such a pointless class. You cannot miss a class because no info is posted on blackboard. Wrote like 9 essays. Treats it like hard core philosophy, chill is GNED.
Linda has some really cool philosophical insights and I really tried to focus on these to stay positive in her course. However, she tries to encourage participation but constantly plays devil's advocate in response. Not encouraging. She also took so much time on the first half of the semester to cram so much into the last bit. Super frustrating.
I thoroughly enjoyed Linda's class. the philosophical works were taught in a way that it could easily be related to real life. She encouraged out of the box thinking, and challenged us to really evaluate the lens through which we view life. She was always willing to answer questions and discuss issues we had with the material. Excellent prof!
It has a little difficult for the students who speak English as 2nd language, since you may not fully understand the materiel. However, Linda's the best pro EVER she will really help you to understand it. What you learn from the course may change your thinking of life! and it does matter for you life!! TAKE IT! I super enjoyed her class! She's BEST
Good prof, she obviously knows her stuff. She really makes you think about life and I found her teachings very interestin gand enlightening. I must say for a FOUNDATION GNED course it is very very heavy, and it is philosophy... so it can be very difficult. You think you might get it, but you dont lol Good luck!
It is a very philosophy heavy course. She gives quite a few assignments and quizzes. The midterm and final have questions that are from previous quizzes, so you can easily ace that section of the exam. Make sure that you read/watch the material thoroughly as the exams and quizzes have direct quotes/details of the storyline. She is unclear at times.
This course has a lot of assignments and quizzes. It also requires A LOT of reading (novels, short stories, especially philosophy). She expects a lot from you. Unless you are an expert at philosophy, I would not recommend this class as this class is hard to take on with other courses.
I found it hard to follow he thought train in class.
Good but hard marker she doesnt take any crap
Linda is very passionate about her subject of expertise and her GNED 1201 course is very interesting; it gets you thinking about the meaning of life! Linda does expect you to be present for every class, and if you aren't you will have a difficult time understanding the readings. Linda is a tough marker and rarely gives A's.
she is a very wicked teacher, i wont advice anyone to go to her class
Besides the fact that she helps you ponder and shieet this class is B.S. I literally had to work my ass off just to pull this mark! She is ridiculous and unclear to what is expected of you to do. Claims if you visit her office you can improve on each essay, I went every essay and my mark went lower! NOT A GPA BOOSTING COURSE AVOIDAVOIDAVOID
I loved this class and Linda! She challenged me, which is part of why I'm in university. If you go to class, you know exactly what she expects and how to achieve a good mark. Linda is an incredibly interesting woman. I would recommend her to people who take university seriously, rather than those who are looking for a free ride.
Linda is actually an awesome prof, and this class was probably one of the most impactful classes I've taken out of 30 classes so far. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this course. DO NOT let the work load scare you because I promise you this course is worth taking (ESPECIALLY with Linda)
No notes. Never returns marks. Lectures off a piece of paper. Super hard to understand and unclear in her teachings. Always all over the place in her lectures. Her tests are impossible.
Worst prof ever. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class is near impossible to do good in. Linda tends to ramble and repeat herself. Encourages students to ask questions but often avoids answering any sort of questions. Expect atleast 3 weeks to get any sort of mark back! Not a good class often leave lectures more lost and confused then when I entered. Avoid a class with Linda at all cost!
Very heavy philosophy based course especially for a TIER 1 GNED but if you are interested in great philosophers and more in depth readings, you will enjoy! I learned a great deal from her course and enjoyed her insight and passion for the subject! Attend class because she rarely uses blackboard and repeats what she expects of you in class.
As a person Linda is sweet and approachable, never once made a student feel bad or got mad at anyone. However, this class will hurt your GPA and sanity unless you love philosophy or have a lot of time to spend trying to understand irrelevant things. She's jumpy, unpredictable, vague, ambiguous, hard to follow yet also repetitive, difficult marker.
I found Linda interesting as a person. She has a lot of life experience. However as a professor she is very disorganized and unclear. Maybe its because she teaches philosophy, but She is all over the place with grading, giving assignment requirements & answering Q's. This class is too much of a gpa dropper and stressor with a full course load.
This class was life-changing! Linda wants her students to be better people and be more compassionate towards other people. This was probably one of the hardest classes I've taken but it was my favourite class in my whole university degree. Linda goes above and beyond to try to help her students succeed in both the classroom and out. Take it!!!
Most pointless class of all time. Never take GNED1201 with Linda, you will regret it! Way to tough and demanding for a GNED class. Doesn't explain the point of anything. Never ever again.
Really confusing because the class wasn't ABOUT anything. Quite boring lectures, and way more work than its worth.
I can't knock her as a prof, as she is obviously well educated and knows her stuff. I just don't recommend her for a GNED course- she teaches as if it's a much higher level. Serious, high expectations, tough grader, hard exams, lots of work. I would skip this as a GNED class unless you are ready to work your butt off for a low grade.
Linda's expectations are unclear. Only 1 grading rubric was given all semester - was supposed to work on the assignment during reading week and it was posted the day before class resumed. Unorganized lectures, sorting through papers every class wasting lecture time. Wants an opinion as long as it coincides with hers. Unfortunate - she's passionate.
Do not take this course because this class was horrible. Too much work and she does not explain or teach the material for you to do good in the class.
Very disorganized, and all over the place especially when it comes to assignments. She'll tell you some things that need to be done for the assignment last minute like the day before it's due. Don't expect much from her when it comes to doing assignments just do the best you can but she marks super hard so be aware... avoid or expect GPA to drop.
Linda was extremely vague and very tough grading assignments that were insufficiently explained. Would not recommend!!!
Very confusing!
Linda's course was one of the hardest courses I've ever taken at MRU. With that being said, I felt like I got my money's worth for the first time since I've been in University. She expects a lot from her students and as a result I found I stretched myself to meet those requirements. She has you complete lots of readings and assignments.
Linda is easily one of the worst professors I've ever had. The first 20 minutes of class are her trying to get organized. Her rubrics and assignment outlines are confusing and all over the place. She expects you to understand the philosophy she's teaching but teaches very minimal things you need to know that would be on a test. DO NOT TAKE.
Linda is a greet prof, she really knows her philosophy well. As long as you come to class everyday you will do well, and absolutely recommend that you approach her if you are having difficulty understand the material she will be more then happy to help and find the time. I put a lot of effort into this course and got a great mark.
This class was very difficult and Linda is the worst prof I've ever had. There is a ton of confusing and time consuming assignments that were given without clear grading rubrics. She then marks them at a high level. She expects you to understand a high level of philosophy and and wants you to participate but only if your opinions align with hers.
Linda was an amazing professor, she told you what needed to be done and gave you many examples of what was needed to recieve an A. If you showed up and did the readings, this class is easy to recieve a good grade in. She is very interesting and knowledgable, I recommmend taking this class because she is very dedicated to her work and teaching.
Linda is amazing, honestly her work was not too hard at all. I went to most of the classes, listened, did my work and passed very well. She is kind and respectful, her teachings are practical in the sense that they help you deeply understand facets of humanity, and how to become better. If you are looking for an inspiring prof please take her.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS1 I read reviews saying don't take her class and I thought, how bad can she be? DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! Doesn't teach you what she said she would, then expects you to know it for a project. EXTREMELY disorganized. Never puts your marks up until it's too late to drop the class and even then you still don't know what you have
Linda is a very pleasant person, and at the outset I hoped her course would be one of the more enjoyable ones of this term. However, her methods of assessing you are very strange, convoluted, and unnecessarily pedantic, which is especially strange considering that she claims to teach in a "socratic" way. Be prepared for a lot of confusion.
Linda is no doubt the worst professor at Mount Royal... Boring, long lectures, she's a terrible person to approach and way too unorganized to give any sort of clear instructions for the endless assignments she gives. Do yourself a favor and don't take her.
Easily one of the worst professors I have ever had. Boring, dry, unorganized lectures. She is the worst. I highly recommend NOT taking any of her classes because she is not good. Assignments didn't make sense, and because her lectures were awful you had no idea how to do anything. I'm usually really good with wanting to go to class, but not hers.
Linda was one of the worst profs I have had. She did not explain anything properly. She is very scatter brain and jumps from topic to topic all the time. She gives way too many assignments for the class that require a significant amount of work and time. We also had to read about 4 books including a lot of platos work which is definite a hard read.
Linda is kind and obviously has a great knowledge on philosophy, but she just does not know how to dumb down the contents for 1st year uni students. There are assignments back to back almost each week requiring 3 lengthy books to read throughout the semester. There were much more workload than my core courses (and this is a gned course).
There are just so many assignments! She spent little time explaining the "Republic" but rather talks about assignments every single class. Students end up with little understanding with vague and unorganized instructions. I highly suggest that you avoid this class unless you want to do assignments every single week LOL
This was the hardest course I took this semester by far. Be prepared to read a lot of plays or novels, and ask a lot of questions if you take this course. Looking back I probably would not have taken this course because it's difficult to stay on top of with other courses. I thought it would be more manageable.
Big group project and final project are marked quite difficult but slack is given on other assignments. Easy to get in touch with through email or talk to after class. Tells you in lectures what you will need to remember for tests, which are easy. She repeats the unimportant, but not lectures. Must relate everything to The Republic. Lots of reading
Linda was a phenomenal teacher! I would take her class again in a second. She is clear and concise in her expectations, and will clarify anything if there are any questions. University would be a dream if all the teachers were like Linda.
Linda was an awesome proff. As long as you care about the class you will do good. She understands where students limitations lands and takes that into account when grading assignments. She invests time into her students and creates good relationships. Work was good and as long as you understand the material you'll be fine. Creative. Interesting.
Great prof, the class is a bit unconventional but that's what I enjoyed most. If you don't like to be creative the this is not the prof for you
Neilson showed up 10 minutes late on the first day of class. She is scatter-brained & gets defensive when you confront her about her notes for not understanding it. I don't doubt that she knows what she is doing but the way she's approached her lecture is confusing. She will also call you out on not being "creative" enough. Don't take her class.
Linda is very smart! But because of this she often doesnt break down concept enough for students - especially for a gned. She expects you to automatically understand everything and her notes are awful. She writes them as she goes only she will only write down the key words of an idea, which is tough for a class based around philosophy.
Neilson is very unorganized. Her notes are all over the place and hard to read (even she has a tough time looking for her own notes). Her syllabus is useless. Way too many assignments for a GenEd. She doesn't care if you have a lot of homework piled on, she won't extend. You've got to be dying for her to be a little lenient -maybe not even then.
Linda is so hard to keep up with. It doesnt matter how much pay attention you will find yourself confused majority of her lectures. You will walk out of a lecture and be like what was she talking about? Also had 4 heavy assignments on the last 2 weeks of class. Seriously recommend to take any class but this one. A GNED class shouldnt be this complex
TL DR; DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! -She is very disorganized, the outline for the course will be modified 5 times during the course -You ask her a question and she will give two different answers to two different students -She doesn't answer certain questions even though she heavily encourages it -She marks the class as if it was a fourth year class.
Linda is often confusing with feedback. She doesn't provide very clear grading criteria, and isn't open to hearing different opinions. This class is philosophy only, with high focus on Socrates, and visual projects. Course content is all lectures, and she doesn't post notes. Very confusing, and will be avoiding classes with Linda in the future.
Linda wasted so much class time talking down to a room full of adults about how they wouldn't understand any of the material without her expert guidance that it was difficult to get anything out of her at all. The class was mainly hard because she was so disorganized and inconsistent and could barely get through any course content. Awful
Linda is very nice in class but gets upset when the teaching is misunderstood. she doesn't post any notes or accommodate for any reason for missing lectures. If your assignments don't exactly repeat what she believes then you won't do well. Her teaching style was very all over the place and although she cares for her students, she grades tough.
The course itself is pretty easy and understandable, but the teacher is had to understand and follow at times. The lectures are unorganized and tests are heavy dependent on notes taken in class. If something was misunderstood and notes are taken with the wrong understanding, then you will most likely fail the test. Definitely ask questions in class
Linda is the worst prof/teacher that I have ever had, and I have had a lot of bad teachers. Avoid this class and you will avoid being made fun of, belittled for having your own opinion, and so fourth. Linda is confusing and changes her mind all the time. She thinks her class will change your life but all it will do is lower your GPA and ruin ur day
Linda wants her students to do well. If you want to do well just care. She cares about you and the content she is teaching so show the respect to care about learning. If you participate every couple of classes or even every class that will help you a lot. Just read the 1 book and few short readings she posts and you will be fine.
she is not nice at all, very rude, expect to do a lot of work for this class and many group projects. You will do a visual essay which if you are not creative or artistic you will do very poorly. The one good thing I will say about her is she literally tells you everything on the midterm and final.
Foundation GNED's should be easy but this was NOT the case. Very vague during her lectures, the most unorganized prof ive ever had, and too many assignments worth 20%. little to no feedback on the grades you get, and makes you feel like an idiot for misunderstanding her unclear lessons. seriously not impressed and class was a waste of money.
Linda is a sweet and caring person who genuinely cares about the success of her students. I was in her class during COVID19 and in the transition from in-class to online she was very supportive and accessible to answer any questions we had. The course material is not easy, it requires effort and attendance but she does help you succeed and improve.
Although this GNED is usually outside of most peoples area of study, Linda really encourages her students to look at things with a different perspective and helps to expand our skills. She is a really nice lady who cares for her students. As long as you put in the effort and work hard - she helps in any way she can to help you improve and do well.
DO not take a class with Linda if you don't want to be lectured for the entire hour and 20 minutes about stuff that is constantly repeated. She will mention something, then say it 20 more times. It felt as though her lectures never really had a REAL purpose. I can't say that I learned much in her class.
Linda's classes were very mandatory, so she wrote notes on the board and used her notes from a private google doc. Mostly she would tell you everything that is on all exams, and she would have group projects rather than individual assignments. Linda is vague for info about assignments, so ask questions! Most assignments were postponed a lot!
Linda goes beyond the usual methods by which students are graded and really encourages creativity. It was such a refreshing class. For people complaining, stop crying about the fact that you got a bad grade and maybe instead focus on actually doing the work. In the online class I took there were three people who actually talked and contributed.
I wouldn't say Linda's lectures provided much information to actually learn from - she's a very eccentric person and spent a lot of time talking to her dog during lecture. Despite this, if you are willing to do the readings and meet with her outside of class for questions, this class is a guaranteed A.
Going to be honest, no clue what Linda was talking about half of the time. She would lecture all class and was unclear about what she wanted in assignments. Even if she said you did a great job, she would grade everything lower than a B. Avoid if you need to do good...
Linda is unorganized & rude. If you email her for clarification/to ask something she replies rudely. Talked for the whole class. Had 2 assignments both worth so much. They were really hard as instructions were unclear. We read a book as a class which Linda sped through and it made no sense. Do not take this class unless you want your gpa to fall.
Do not take any gned with her. She seems kind but is horrible at explaining. Only has 2 assignments and tests and weighed heavily, so If you do bad your grade is bad. Extremely extremely confusing, hard to follow along in lectures and makes you feel bad if you are confused.
Kind lady when speaking outside of class, but not a good professor. Stated that she teaches the course "like a Harvard class." If I wanted a Harvard class, I would have gone there.
