She is sooo fun. This is a great class for soc majors or nonsoc majors. It's interesting, and applies real life experience with factual concepts. Great lady, she's like your friend. Lots of food in class, BUT please, do study for her tests. I love her
I love her, she makes class fun and you learn with out even trying. She involves you in the class and everybody gets to know everybody pretty good. Everyone should take her at least once, but do read the book for the test.
Her class is really fun. You learn a lot from her class with a lot of in class discussion. She makes learning fun. Really should take a class with her.
Very understanding, outgoing, makes learning educational and fun.
She's a great person and you get to really open up in her class. All the time you put in studying for the tests will be worth the knowledge you end up walking out of her class with.
This was the best class I ever took at Mt Sac. I learned so much that I will actually be able to apply to my daily life. And Linda Rillorta is a wonderful teacher---there's no one you couldn't get along with her!
i'm staying at mt sac. for a semester more than i planned simply because i want to take one more of dr. rillorta's classes. she's the best teacher i've ever had. very helpful and she makes class exciting and interesting.
Dr. Rillorta is very unapproachable. She has been rude tomany students in my class, including me. I went to ask her a question about and she yelled at me and tried to make me feel stupid. I think she is just too full of herself
listens, willing to help, gives spontaneous extra credit assignment that help alot, likes participation, gets mad at late students, willing to work with former students... if you visit her office she realli helps you out and tells you wut you need for A
If you enjoy feeling like you are in grade school, then you will like her.
Very easy class. I enjoyed her lectures very much and thought it was a fun class.
unapproachable, good teacher, lectures well, but looks down on students in mt. sac, likely that she thinks we are worthless compare to her upper middle class family and her MIT son.
This class is a remedial class geared towards people who cannot write a clear paper and who confuse words that we as a society should have learned in 1st grade. She is all talk and no walk. She starts out saying the class is geared towards university standards and then regresses back to elementary.
Have to read the book to pass her class, nearly impossible to get an A w/out bringing in food for ex-credit, unapproachable, doesn't take others opinions into consideration (she thinks she is always right). Definetly thinks highly of herself and her family...lectures are primarily about herself
I really enjoyed this class, lectures were interesting and useful in real life. If you read the book and pay attention in class you will have no problem getting an A.
She is a great and funny teacher. The only thing is that you Have to read the book in order to pass her class other than that she is great. Don't listen to her the first day because she sounds mean but she is not!
the key to get an A is to take good notes and read the book, especially the bolded and italicized terms and theories. i did a few of the extra credits, but i still ended up with an A in the class with or without the extra credits. you have to work for an A, and make sure your writing is readable!
Good class! She is a little conceited but if you get past that the class is FUN! I looked forward to it every day! The tests weren't too bad!
She TrieS to SCare U On thE FirsT DAY oF clASS so IF U aRe LAzy You DroP! LoL...SheS grEat!! YEah U NEEEEED to REAd ANd StudY NoteS!! SheS A greAt PrOF
She really stimulates class discussion very well!

She can come off as arrogant and stuck-up, but she can also be understanding and lenient if you let her know you're having difficulties with the class. Her teaching is clear and easy to understand. Her class is interesting and her tests are easy as long as you go to class and read the book. You must do both to pass the class.
very approachable professor, lots of student involvement. Do all of the reading and pay attention in lecture and you'll be fine, start the research paper early that way you can get help if needed.
Awesome professor who loves what she does. Very willing to help her students. Her tests are from the book AND lecture, so you need to read the book and take notes to do well. I would take her again in a heartbeat. One of Mt. SAC's best!
great class actually learn a lot i thought that it might be weird because its basically a girls class. makes the class interesting and fun, read the book. seriosly if you dont read you wont pass. there are 5 tests but trust me i dont read and i got an A in the class. RECOMMENDED
OMG. SHe is exsremly hard. she teaches at a ubiversity level because she beilves it is a university class. she does not tech out of the book. but i is recomended to read on your own because it will be on tests. its a very intrestinf class but you really have to work for it to get a good grade.
What can I say Linda is an awesome teacher. Her arrogance comes from her hard work and years of study. She is very hard, but especially on those that she believes the most in. I have taken her twice and I can honestly say she really does care about her students. She seems stuck up and full of herself, and she is but she does care alot too!
It seems useless for me to write this comment, since it's clear 99% of her students love her... the 1% is retarded and doesn't want to read the book... for those who are lazy, don't waste her time. She's the best teacher I've ever had, helpful, class time is so much fun, you can tell she's so knowledgeable on the subject. I'm so happy I took her!
Great teacher, negative comments have probably received bad grades. To get a good grade you need to go to class, takes notes, participate and read the book. She repeats herself when it is a test question and will say"THIS WILL BE ON THE TEST"She is not arrogant. She does lecture about herself to help you apply principles to life experience.Shes Hot too!
Listen to what she tells you about reading the textbook on the first day. You MUST read the book for tests or you will not pass, plain and simple. I didn't read it until the third test; my first two test grades were D's, my third was a B. Otherwise, show up to class for participation points, and take notes everyday to study for the test as well.
You would have to be incredibly mentally dull to find this class difficult. Sadly, the teacher has some delusion of self-importance, which is unreasonable considering her position. She becomes aggravated at spontaneous, unexpected times for no reason and can be vulgarly rude. Quantum mechanics is more consistent and stable than her mood patterns.
I can't believe some people here are complaining about her. She is a great professor. She expects you to work for the A, but she also gives you all the tools needed to get an A if you are willing to put forth the efforts. Read the textbook, take the notes, ask questions and PARTICIPATE. I did and I walked out of her class with an A+.
The most pompous professor alive. She always has a condescending tone, and will remind you in every single class that she attended USC because she's so "great and intelligent". Big whoopdie-doo! She doesn't have a set curriculum. If you enjoy being ridiculed, take her.
Dr. Rillorta is the sweetest teacher ever! She has a great sense of humor, leads great discussions, and is inspiring to listen to. Taking notes is crucial because her lectures are EXACTLY on the test! I got an A+ all across the board in her class and ended up majoring in Sociology because of her. A great teacher!
1st of all don't even get remotely intimidated when she tells you that this class is going to be "really hard". i was scared at first but i think she just does it to weed out the lazy students. this class was super easy. i hate reading (this is necessary for passing), so i barely read and still got an A. cool teacher too!
She's funny, interesting, fair, & helpful. I never had to study her lecture materials; I remembered everything because she made it fun & incorportated class participation. Her multiple choice exams are equally divided into 2 sections: lecture & text book. She doesn't go over the text book so you must read it. She offeres plenty of extra credit.
Dr. Rillorta is easily one the most self-absorbed teachers on campus. She is too adamant in the information she gives, which is often times flat-out incorrect. She wastes most of the lecture giving examples of a relatively easy concept, limiting the amount of notes you get through to only a handful of terms. That being said, her class is easy.
As stated by previous commenters, Rillorta is extremely sweet. Too sweet. Sweet in the let-me-be-your-grandmother kind of way. She organizes her courses so they're very high school education based. Does not teach from the book, which is redundant imo. Knows the subject. I mean, she got a Ph.D from USC for God's sakes. But she doesn't know how to teach it. Suck up to her. It definitely helps.
Terrible
Shows a lot of favoritism, not cool if you are a professor. Some people can be late to class, no problem, while others will lose points and be ridiculed. If you like being treated with fairness and respect, then she is not the teacher for you, honestly.I will give her this, she is very structured with no surprises, she sticks to the syllabus.
Linda is nice but she does play favorites. Sucking up to her helps and if you are in her SL3 class it helps even more. She does not lecture from the book so you need to read it yourself and study lecture notes as well, which works out for her I guess. She gets impatient so don't ask too many questions. Also: "watching TV kills brain cells"
Awesome teacher. Just study notes and bolded terms in the book, and your good for tests. As far as written assignments go, there aren't too many and just don't make grammar mistakes or force conclusions and your good. I also too her for 20H, I wish I could take more of her classes. Soft sciences ftw
I also took her for SOC 20H, and SOC 14. She is an amazing professor. She expects students to follow directions. You need to read the book to get an A in the class (for all her classes). I am a straight A student and she is the only class I have had to read for, but I would definitely suggest reading.
Ridiculous excuse for a college professor. A class period consists of everybody sharing their experiences with one particular sociological term, and you have to buy your grade by bringing food for the class before every test.
Liked to play favorites...that got old pretty fast. Lecture consisted of one to three main points being dissected to oblivion. Overall, she's easy as heck as long as you read that outdated godforsaken book. It only cost me twenty bucks so I take that back. Oh...and you can win her heart with food as the previous person stated. That is all. :)
Not a fan of her teaching style but her class is very easy. You absolutely need to read the textbook because she does not teach from it, but she will test you on it.
Professor Rillorta is a great professor! Read the book. Go to class everyday. participate in class and you will be fine. There is a lot of extra credit opportunities. It is not hard to get an A as long as you do ALL the work.
Dr. Rillorta is one of the best professors I have ever had. She introduced me to Sociology and was my mentor in community college. She changed my life and without her I would not be where I am today, graduated from CSUSB and USC and a Sociology professor at a community college. She is fair and dedicated to her students and she is a great person!
I was really interested in taking a Gerontology class but was disappointed with lack of useful information in the lectures.Lectures were comprised of one or two simple topics dissected ad nauseam. The class itself is easy but what makes this class more work than it's worth is the mandatory 50+ hours of volunteer work you need to do to get an A.
She's amazing! You absolutely need to read the book and study all terms! Class lectures are also important, since she does not teach from the book! Extra credit is highly recommended; although, you do not need it to get an A in the class. Read, pay attention, participate, a show up to class that's all you need. She also expects you to know things.
One of my favorite classes at Mt. Sac. She knows what she is talking about and requires her students to participate. This is a fun and easy class, but also very informative. I received an A by going to class everyday, doing the extra credit, and memorizing the vocab for the tests.
Very nice. She was determined to have all her students pass and even though she said there were clear deadlines that would result in a drop if you ignored, there were several students that still stuck around. Regardless, I really liked her class. Exactly what is on the book and what she lectures is on the tests. Easy if you don't mind volunteering
She requires punctuality. But she has a great conversational tone to her lectures, and she puts things in perspective.
Rillorta is an amazing professor. She really puts the subject material in perspective for you by providing examples. You will get to talk and learn a lot about yourself through her class. She is straightforward so make sure you follow her guidelines and you should be fine. She always wants students to succeed and is very helpful and supportive.
Tough teacher but nice if you work hard and are dedicated
Great professor and subject. Just need to read sections of textbook and review lectures. Professor provides study guides for test. Grades fair, and is willing to offer extra credit.
Her class is very easy. Just make sure to PAY ATTENTION during class, not very hard. And I read the book the morning of the tests, I aced every test but one, I got a B. Do all the extra credit. Its so easy and I did all the extra credit the morning of or night before. She sometimes makes her students feel stupid, thats for sure. Attendance is key.
Easy class if you study. You must keep up with the reading to do well on exams. Lectures are based on her own ideologies which she presents as facts (this can be very annoying, especially since she tests you on this non sense). Lots of essays throughout the semester, and she refuses online sources. Research paper consists of outline format however.
Linda was a really nice professor! She was like a mother that took care of us. Lectures were interesting and full of discussions. Tests were easy as long as you spent some time reading the book. Definitely would take again!
The course material in this class is not difficult to understand at all. The only difficult thing about the course is Dr. Rillorta's attitude!! She gets incredibly moody and she is not afraid to make you feellook stupid in front of everyone. She grades VERY harsh. There is a group project. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT BEING LATEABSENT.
She is in my opinion a really good teacher. You do have to put the time into reading and memorizing terms and sections though. You take your own notes, gives no power points. Lots of extra credit opportunities that helps your grade. Overall I would recommend her
Had this professor for my first time in college! I'm not the best student and this was taken during my first semester of college and my only A was with this professor so that should say something. She was really sweet and made the topic interesting just make sure you read the textbook! Half the questions were lectures half were textbook Qs!
Linda's class was interesting, and the tests were not difficult if you showed up and took notes. However, I was not a fan of her personality. She was distant from her students and always seemed to hate her career. She grades a bit harshly, and her feedback is more rude than it is constructive. She gets way too personal and emotional. Easy A, though
Professor Rillorta is a really good professor. She cares a lot about her students and genuinely works towards helping you get the best grade possible. Participation helps your grade a lot and she offers many extra credit opportunities. Make sure you read the book and take good notes!!!
Prof. Rillorta is so sweet! Classes are just discussions about sociology topics and current events. Very chill. There are quite a few assignments- mostly evaluations that are fairly easy. One big paper on a topic that will end in a debate! It's time consuming but manageable. She's very understanding and gives lots of extra credit!
Moody, emotional teacher. Very politically liberal, doesn't care for other opinions or worldviews. What she says is gospel and you may not challenge it. Never gives any evidence. You better swallow and regurgitate for tests. Very tedious reading too. Upsides: Easy A, if you do the reading, and the book's cheap. Lots of extra credit. One big paper.
I regret taking this class, she is the worst professor I ever had at mt sac. Her lectures are boring, I ber people show up just because she gave us points for participation. Need to read the book because she wont lecture from the book at all. Pointless class that you will learn nothing but will feel insulted and offended.
Tests are from the book, but she doesnt cover everything in her lecture, what's the point of taking this class when you pretty much self study! Her lectures are boring, unorganized, not related to the assigned reading. It seems like she is the laziest prof. who never prepared anything to lecture. She can be emotional, moody and rude sometimes.
Easy A if you do all of your extra credit (so much extra credit!!) assignments and actually participate in lecture. She is like the kindergarten teacher you all miss having in a college setting. She believes in bringing food to class and doing nice things to make everyone feel better. Personally I think the world needs more professors like her
Tests cover the textbook and lectures. 3 chapters per test. Read the chapters (yes all of it!). Gives so much extra credit it is hard to not get an A. Great and interesting lectures that make it easy to remember the lesson! Take this class if you want an A! She works with you, not against you.
Professor is so nice to us. She is willing to help us with our paper. Her lecture is fun and we can learn a lot. You need to read for the exam. She will give extra credit. If you study for the class, it is an easy A.
I loved this class. We had discussions everyday. You seriously have to read the chapters in the book for the tests. Skimming at the vocab words is NOT enough.
Took her for Sociology Honors. She's a great and informative teacher who is well-versed in her field. She cares enough to give students many extra credit opportunities for boosting grades. Tests are based off of textbook readings and lectures that you should take good notes on. Overall the class vibe is fun and casual, which makes learning easier.
Honestly one of the worst professors ever if you want to actually engage and learn. She will not listen to any opinion or even fact if it does not agree with her worldview. Always dismisses class early because she comes to class with zero prep for what she is to teach. tl;dr Easy class, show up to get an A, extra credit, terrible teacher
Professor Rillorta is an Ok professor, she does not teach based on book her lectures are on terms thats she believes will help understand societal issues and relations exams are 50/50 with book and class discussions. You have to work for your grade, she is not an easy grader. However gives plenty of extra credit! Challenging class But good
Professor Rillorta is very knowledgeable. Her tests are based on her lectures and the textbook so it is very important to read if you want to pass. She also has lots of potlucks which is fun. She cares greatly for her students and she is easily the best professor I have had to this day.
Prof. Rillorta is an amazing teacher. I liked her class because it was about the discussion.
She's definitely not the best professor as she is unclear and unwilling to teach basic concepts such as how to properly cite a source. Her practice of having only printed sources is outdated and very difficult since most sources come from the Internet now. The subject is interesting and she has many extra credit opp., but she is not a good pro
Her lectures are entirely discussion based which was enjoyable. The honors experience made it better overall. So much extra credit is offered. For the test make sure to know the bolded terms from the book & basically everything from her lectures.
Arbitrary and capricious methods of grading and teaching. I would not recommend at all! Very distant, when it comes to teaching style. Not good with criticism nor is she open to unorthodox ideas or feedback. I regret taking the class.
So happy I got this professor! Her teaching style is really unique in the way she makes learning easy, but at the same time challenges you to think. It was great to be in a class where the professor cared and wanted to help me grow. Huge plus she will go out of her way to explain things if you don't understand.
Dr. Rillorta is an amazing professor and you can tell she is passionate about her work. The class challenges you to think outside the box and will make you see things in a different perspective. I wasnt sure about what major I would follow but this class has truly inspired me to pursue a degree in sociology. I definitely recommend taking her class
I couldnt, for the life of me, appreciate her haphazard approach to teaching and grading. I found her to be very inaccessible and closed off to questions from students. I dont think her expectations are very clear nor her comments on assignments helpful. Wish I had taken a class that would help me learn about the field without the minutiae.
I didn't like the way she taught this class. I didn't find this class to be a positive learning environment where diverse opinions were welcome. She seemed very unorganized and for the most part, lacking in enthusiasm for sociology. You will hear a plethora of personal anecdotes about herself, but I found it very impractical in terms of applying it
Quizzes and tests do not match what is taught in the lectures. Very different teaching style than other professors. Remote learning is very remote and time was not spent efficiently for learning purposes. Grueling four months.
Prof. Linda answers very quickly and checks up on your performance. I wouldn't take her again because her tests are very difficult many questions aren't from her lectures. Her lectures are straightforward but the textbook is too much to memorize for the test.
I took this course during Winter 21 term. Professor Rillorta offers many extra credit opportunities, and is very responsive. Great GE course that isn't too rigorous. If you're interested in SOC or just looking for a good GE take her! Even if you decide to take the honors course its not too tough even in the 6 week term!
I have had the pleasure of being taught by Linda in person and online. She is incredibly intelligent woman, and I appreciate her teaching style. I cannot say enough good things about Linda. She is one of the most influential people I have encountered in my educational career. She gives great feedback. Totally recommend taking any of her classes.
The most unorganized professor that I have had. The mood swings is very distracting. Very tough grader and takes too long to post grades and new assignments. Thought I was doing well until I saw my grade at the end.
Bummed! Perhaps better in person??? Not well-versed in technology. Material is easy but tests have questions not covered in lessons so make sure you read book. Material provided is boring-seems more personal than professional. Strict about grammar, font etc. BUT is not very good at this herself. Spells Arial like Ariel. Seems moody & sassy.
Class is mostly self-study and there is little coverage of core concepts in lectures. There is an uncanny focus on grammar, punctuation, and other topics unrelated to sociology. I didnt feel any support for my educational endeavors in this environment, rather the opposite (which caused me to lose interest and gravitate toward different major).
I initially did not want to take her class, but I had no other choice since she was the only professor teaching SOC2H. Very petty rules and point deduction if discussion posts don't meet standards on word count and paragraphs. Deducts points on improper grammar and punctuation, yet her writing in the stories she wrote for us to read is horrible.
I took an asynchronous class for my fall semester. There were many discussion posts usually every week, along with some extra credit assignments. There were tests every other week, but they were open notes. Make sure you follow directions and provide answers according to her instructions. I also emailed her and she gave me an in-depth explanation.
No lectures, just watch crash course and 5 videos. Exams do not include material covered in Async class. Class is lazily presented and exams are 50 questions but timed to an hour. Waste of time and money, she lacks professionalism and should quit her teaching career. horrible professor
This professor needs to be better. Very harsh on discussion boards. For word count, grammar and critical about all of that and even font. Discussion board question are okay. Test are horrible. Her way of studying doesnt help for the test. The test arent really about what we read. Half of the test doesnt relate to the book.
Horrible Professor! You will regret taking this class with her. All she had us do was read the text book, take exams, and post on discussions. Her idea of a lecture consists of 1 or 2 sentences. Did not feel inspired or motivated by this professor at all! This would've been a better class with a different professor who values student's ideas.
I took SOC1H asynchronously for Summer 2021. The class was reading heavy as there were about 3 chapters per week (for 6 week course) so make sure to get the textbook. Regardless, if you do the reading, and try on the quizzes/exams and discussions, you'll get an A+ easily. Material and assignments weren't particularly hard, just lots of reading.
I took Professor Rillorta's Marriage & Family sociology course in person. Despite this being a few years ago, I still regard her as one of the most memorable professors at Mt. SAC. She truly cares for her students, and her classes have always been enjoyable and stimulating to someone like me who struggles with ADHD. Gives LOTS of extra credit.
Dr. Rillorta is admirable and influential as a professor. I had her for Sociology of Marriage and the Family Honors (SOC-14H), which was a humbling experience. Although she's very picky about things like word count, grammar, and format, she was a really great Sociology mentor to me during office hours. I'm a stronger writer because of her support!
Linda was a very kind professor who cared very much for her students. I took her late-term eight-week class, and even though I joined very late, she gave me a chance to continue. I definitely want to take her again!
Prof. Rillorta offered 4 exams, 2 papers, participation, and lots of extra credit. Do the EC!! I passed with an A by doing them. Her exams are mostly textbook based, but she also includes lecture notes. She's strict on grading when it comes to writing assignments. Just adapt to her teaching style and attend office hours. Linda's a great professor.
She is the best professor I've ever had. She is such a caring and generous teacher. We had 4 exams, 2 papers, and LOTS of extra credit opportunities. She really makes the class enjoyable and pretty easy. I would really recommend taking any of her classes, she's an amazing teacher. You will really love taking and will pass this class!
I don't understand all these negative comments. Prof Rillorta has specific requirements for assignments but as long as you meet them you will receive full marks. The class is very organized and great for independent studying. The test is based on the reading and you have plenty of time to refer to notes and your book.
First, she was the only professor who let me join her class late despite my personal troubles. You can immediately tell that she deeply cares for her students' well-being both inside and outside of class. As for her workload, she assigns reading to do every week, and a test roughly every few weeks. Highly recommend it, the class was interesting!
I think Dr. Rillorta gets a bad rap - and I'm not sure why. She really cares for her students and make sure she's accessible outside of class. Tests are about the book (async). read and you should be fine. 1 Covid journal relating some topics in class to your experience. Passed with about a 97%, 4 tests. Taking her again for Soc 14H.
Dr. Rillorta is an amazing professor. She offered 5 exams, 4 small papers, and plenty of extra credit/points. Weekly readings were short and free of cost. Lectures were mainly terms, theories, and discussion from everyone. Exam study guide is the 5Ts! Overall, I enjoyed learning marriage and family from this class.
The class material was interesting but the exams were 50 questions+ and she has very extreme rules when it comes to assignments. IF you cannot put in a lot of attention I would suggest looking for a different class. It comes with a lot of reading and writing. She did answer emails quickly which was appreciated. Overall 6.5/10
Class is easy. You can tell sociology is fundamentally unserious because she grades more harshly on how you formatted the answer more than the content of the answer itself. Just remember, in the end, men bad.
I don't understand how Professor Linda has such a low rating. Her lectures were fantastic, I learned so much from her class. The work was also very light, It's a hard class to fail. But I really admired her and I hope you seeing this motivates you to take her class.
Professor Rillorta makes this class enjoyable. With ample extra credit opportunities and a caring teaching style, she helps students like me with ADHD succeed. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for exam prep!
Rillorta is nice, but her class is not challenging enough and she cares more about attendance than coursework. she has a grade for attendance that is worth the same as an exam. If you show up even slightly late it will significantly affect your grade for the class. She also has trouble spelling certain words which for a professor is unseemly.
below review: have you read her bio? hahaha. that's what happens in the social sciences! so equitable and diverse that tenured profs can't spell basic words. #GoTrojans
Just a mid class, easy going. She has a strict format she wants so make sure u follow. It is just reading text books, watching some videos. The lecture is easy but I did not get inspired or learn something new. Probably because it is basic sociology class. If u want easy GE go for it.
the best class ive ever taken i loved all of its content and the exams are easy if you take good notes.
I'm honestly really upset I finished with an 89% and was given zero chance to raise my grade even one percent to earn a B. The exams are the only reason my grade is low 50 questions with barely any time to even read through the questions and having exams due on Halloween?Really? There was absolutely no flexibility or understanding even when emailed
