Offers lots of help if you are willing to seek it. She has embraced technology, her online class is very well-suited for the subject
this is the only media 4 class to take. online or not at all. not a bad class at class.
Her class is fine and easy just remeber to do the assignments but as of talking to her as a teacher she sucks, maybe that's why she teaches online becuase one on one she's the worst teacher.. that's all i have to say
her tests are hard, but i really enjoyed class. she's pretty opinionated and loud, but that's what made the class great. she knows her stuff, and her grading was clear. i would recomend her.
Online class. The course is not difficult, but here quizzes are unfair. She asks some questions that are not in the reading and is not fair about them when challenged. She calls it thinking outside the box...and her curriculum.
Online class. Tests are unfair, the wording is confusing and not covered in the material. Don't miss a test for anything (so much for online flexability) or she will give you 0/50 points.
Don't miss a test or you may as well drop the class as you won't get a good grade for sure! Tests are unfair and she changes the rules as she pleases. Watch test dates as she changes them with no notice. Find another teacher!
Great online class. Lots of reading though. Online lectures are pretty long. Tests and quizzes are challenging, but I found them fair. Schoen is helpful when it comes to feedback and clarifications. Subject matter was interesting. Good class-- I would take a class from her again.

This instructor had many erroneous quiz and test questions about material not covered in the lectures or tests and type-o's. She did not keep up with her own schedule of lecture postings. The class website had many dead links and was not well maintained. This is the worst class I have taken at the JC and I have taken quite a few. And, as other students mentioned, if you miss a test or quiz, it's almost impossible to catch up. Lots of reading!
Quizzes and tests ocassionaly had very ambiguous questions, but were not that difficult if you took your time. Online lectures, etc. were not always kept up to date. According to the online gradebook during my section it looks as if many people had a hard time with this class, but i thought it was an easy and interesting class, even with it's problems.
As long as you skim the chapter and do well on the basic assignments you will do fine.
She didn't explain what she expected, no study guides for tests and seemed to "bash" the "younger" generation because we are "lazy". She was very opinionated and at times it was hard to just let her ramble. Most classes I left wondering why I had just sat through the hour and a half.
Teacher is egotistical and difficult. She is not fair on exams and don't dare challenge questions-some of which are not in any of the reading material and were never presented. She knows the subject, but seems too full of herself to care about the students.
Linda knows what she is talking about but dont dare challenge her b/c she will chew your head off. If you read the chapter and take the online quiz with a friend then you should do well. The tests are hard so study! Makes sure to take good notes, you will need them. Watch out she thinks teenagers are stupid and know nothing about media or hitsory.

Read the chapters and you will do fine.
Linda was one of the worest teachers i have ever had. Not one class did she not have an attitude and always put people down. Test were so hard and never ever went over the material that was on the test. WOULD NOT TAKE HER!
She possibly has the most rediculous test/quizzes that I have taken in college. I currently have a 3.9 grade point average and I am barely making a C on her quizzes. She has very unclear questions, so much that sometimes I dont even know what she is asking.
The class itself is very interesting. The quizzes are very simple. You pretty much get what you put in when it comes to this class. People come and expect to get an A but don't study or read the book. The chapters aren't long and are not complex. I recommend this class for an easy A.
completely ridiculous, I busted my ass for a "C" bout a third dropped the class at some point and i had one of the highest grades. i really learned alot even though i got an "F" on all three tests.
The material is interesting and straighforward but lectures give different information than the text and quiz questions are very confusing. If you do take the class, remember don't argue, lecture notes are right when in conflict with text (and it DOES happen). I would NOT take a class with this instructor again.
I think she's awesome! Very open, friendly, and sarcastic. Doesn't always follow the book, but she always points out exactly when in class, you just need to listen :) Taking notes important, as well as reading. Just expect what you put in.
The classes are very interesting (livly). She is very knowledgeable. Her tests are hard. Does let you use a 5x8 card w/test. Cares for students. Study people, defs,& details from study guide. 2-3 answers for ea. Q. She loves what she does. I was in awe of how much she knew. Good teacher!
there are only tests in this class and they were fricken RIDICULOUS!!! the tests are what your grade is based on and they were extremely out of this world
I didn't believe the ratings here until I took this class. Most of what is said here is pretty true. tests questions are designed to trick you. Midterm exam included 3 full essays. Asks for your opinion and then grades you bad if she doesn't agree. Had to take this for my degree. BTW I love the subject - but she makes the class difficult and scary.
Mrs. Schoen disagreed with every idea I expressed and graded me down because of it. I followed her instructions and when they didn't work I was graded down. When I asked her questions her responses were, "I don't understand." Watch out for this professor!
I took this class online and at the beginning of the semester, I really didn't care for her and thought her tests were ridiculous. However, I found that if you talk to her and ask questions, she is very helpful. She is very opinionated on the subject but I found that if you explain to her your train of thought, she is willing to listen.
I took the online Media 4 class. It was extreemely easy as long as you read the text book and online notes. I had an A+ in the class the entire semester. There is ample opportunity for extra credit. The tests do take quite a while but you can find most of the answers online. This teacher is very nice and the subject is interesting!
Class is structured very simply however there is quite a bit of weekly reading. Weekly test can be challenging even if you complete weekly reading. The professor provides solid feedback on test and essay questions but is otherwise absent. I would take the class again if necessary. Not an ideal class for the student requiring hand holding.
whatever you do don't take her. I was pretty excited to take this class until our first test... It was awful i did all the reading and everything, but when i got our weekly quiz you couldn't understand most of her questions it seems like she pulled them out of no where. she is awful DON'T TAKE HER CLASS
DO NOT TAKE HER. I thought that that this was an interesting and easy class to take but she was not clear on her instruction and overly critical when you couldn't follow her. This was an online course and she seemed to have major computer problems and she didn't seem to be very computer literate.
Schoen's an easy A but frustrating. Point out a mistake in the online course & your sent an email telling u to drop the course. Very opinionated, very slow to grade or give feedback. Test pages are late to open, quizes are directly from the text. No need to read class notes. Doesn't take course seriously, it's a burden to her. Overall she gets F!
One follow up note from below, on the quizes, if there is an option for "all are correct", that is always the answer. Don't question her accuracy, she can't be bothered from Reno. She is buried by blogs she has to grade, not a hard class, just tidious. Skip the class notes, they are useless, book has all the information.
This was an online class. It was an easy A with all of the extra credit. You can easily work ahead,I finished 4 weeks ahead of class. All book use, ignore class notes as everyone else has said. They are useless. Schoen is arogant and useless, but if you need an easy A, use wikipedia to answer test questions and the index. Easy Class but Bad teacher!
I took the online class sect. 9507 & finished ahead of schedule. It wasn't too difficult. Most answers are found online. Wikipedia.com is great as mentioned. Teacher's a bit arrogant and slow 2 respond 2 email, but I think she's just busy. Overall it wasn't a hard class, tests are time consuming, but I got an A+ with extra credit. Half class got As
I agree w/ the comments below. An A+ is easy to get. Overload of Extra Credit, one full quiz 30, 10 points in the begining/a crossword for 20. Teacher gave up grading and just gave every1 full credit for blogs by last 2 weeks. Easy A but bad teacher
This is the worse professor I have ever had! Her quizzes don't even go with the reading. I have never disliked a class so much!
This is the worst class I have ever taken! I'm a 3.5 student and have never had a problem until this class. DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a 3.5 student and getting a "C" in the class! The tests take anywhere for 3-5 hrs per test. Half the time the tests and quizes don't pertain to the info. you learned from the chapters. DON'T TAKE ANY CLASSES TAUGHT BY THIS INSTRUCTOR!
Overall, not hard to get an A in this class, extra credit is offered. However, test questions are often confusing or not covered in book or online lectures. 2 main exams are ridiculously long, took me about 4 hours each. Essay criteria not clear and points lost don't always make sense. Uninspiring teacher and class. Only take if you have to.
Linda is a great teacher. This class online works well and as long as you stick to the schedule and don't miss assignments, you'll be just fine. I like the fact that she posts to the gradebook often and in doing so allows her students to be clear about where they stand gradewise in the class. The material is interesting...
Took online.Do the work and get a good grade, but their is alot of work.Weekly discussions, weekly quiz(takes 2hrs) that are multipule choice and short answer. Shes very strict on details, especially with papers. She can be unclear. Tests take 4hrs to do. she also makes you do alot of reading. Stay away from this class unless you have no choice.
I am in the middle of Media 4 online with Schoen right now. The quizzes and tests take way too long and some of the questions are not even in the material. She is very biased when grading papers as well. Most online classes I have taken are very convenient and this one is by far the most ridiculous online course. DO NOT take her at all.
The class is easy if you do the assigned work. It is easy to fall behind if you are a procrastinator. Very interesting class!
Linda is awesome, one of the best teachers I've had in a long while. She cares about who passes and fails and WANTS to help you. People whom rate her a bad teacher are just upset because this class actually requires A BRAIN. It's a mentally stimulating class, and if you pay attention, you'll absorb the info easily.
Took online class. Easy for anyone who does all of the assignments. I had no interest in this course & got an A. The online test taking was difficult because if your internet connection went down you would lose the test & have to start again w/ completely different questions/order. She's pretty reasonable though & will work w/ you so you succeed.
Media 4 is an Easy A. Linda on the other-hand is the worst instructor I have encountered in my two years at SRJC. The lady is full of negativity, enjoys picking on the pupils & is always right when it comes to Media 4. Linda has an extremely low score on RMP as far as feedback dating back to ?03 & is still teaching at SRJC & I can?t understand Why.
Mixed feelings about this online course. Linda is very knowledgeable about the topic without a doubt. However, sometime her test questions are as clear as mud. The website wasn't the easiest to navigate. Grading is easy, nothing is weighted and there is extra credit galore. The text is on reserve so it's not worth buying.
Test are so unclear!!! If you have the time to take the boring long tests its worth it because the work alone each week isn't bad. Not a fan of her but it's an okay class def. The reviews below are right on.
Linda gave me a lot of confidence and if you read the material, read the lecture notes,do the required work you will easily ace this class. Some of the questions require thought and personal imput, that is what college is about.I was aprehensive about taking this class but Linda built up my cofidence.Great teacher, and a good online class
I had no interest in this class when I signed up for it, but in the end I throughly enjoyed it. Linda is a good teacher who clearly tells you what needs to be done and has great knowledge of media.
I have no idea why everyone is hating on Linda. I took her online class and it was totally clear and easy to understand. Linda was very responsive to e-mail and helpful. A LOT of reading required, you def need the textbook. Offers a lot of extra credit. I would recommend her for sure though, very knowledgeable and fun.
This was a late-start class. I was really excited to take the course, but she made it boring and difficult. There were 8 forums and quizzes, 2 exams, & no final. She gives a lot of time for quizzes and exams, but they are hard q's, criptic, and somewhat unfair. If you're really into Media, take a class in-person and with someone else.
This was a mixed class, some Saturdays, the rest online. I loved it! C'mon, you learn about books, video games, movies, etc; however-it's not easy. Just like any other class, you must do the reading and be prepared for quizzes. Linda was very helpful over email, and I enjoyed her enthusiasm. Awesome class, I will miss it.
i toke this class and really wasn't sure i i wanted to take it! the quizzes are long and the test are long also. i was able to get some test questions of quizlet but towards the end guess she figured it out and couldn't find any answers! you do have to work hard towards a good grade not an easy A class
I took the summer semester, so the amount of reading is 3-4 chapters a week, plus lecture notes and links, and Powerpoints. Quizzes every week can be difficult & time consuming. Two tests equally as difficult. Two paragraph responses to weekly topics and a project with a partner. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Do assignments on time or else.
I didn't see much enjoyment from her end in this class. granted, it was an online class, but it just didn't seem like she cared about her students. I also worked my butt off and received a D.. It was kind of a boring class to me, lots of work, rarely forum questions that got me interested. "Eh" kinda class.
This teacher is SNARKY. The first time I asked her for clarification (this was an online class), I had to read through two entire paragraphs of criticism and nagging before she even addressed my question. Future questions I asked, and questions I saw by others on the forum, were met with a similar reaction by her. She has an attitude problem.
'online lectures' are pdf'd notes that she posts. There really is no teacher interaction, unless you email her. Responses are limited. She assigned so much work that she can't keep up with grading it timely. Test questions are extremely difficult to understand and answer. Term 'clues' are limited and extremely vague and ambiguous.
Teacher interaction is non existent. She is unorganized - will post only part of an assignment and doesn't post the other part (necessary to do the work) until a few days before it's due, but then won't' extend the due date. She also assigned an enormous amount of assignments, reading, and quizzes, to the point that she can't keep up with grading
I would never recommend Linda's class. I asked her to check to see if she received my assignment ok. And it was like pulling teeth she won't do it. She's not a good teacher at all. Don't take this class.
Online summer class, so 2-4 chapters per week, about 70-125 pages each. "online lectures" do not incorporate digital media- just pdf's to download. It was disappointing that a mass media class did not use more then 1-2 types of mediums. I didn't always feel the grading was objective. Very dependent on text book... drill and kill.
Linda was very organized, responsive, and helpful. Tests were difficult and required almost entire amount allotted. Discussions and assignments were broken into smaller groups. Deadlines were consistent from week to week. Extra credit offered. This class was challenging, but subject was interesting and assignments were engaging.
Linda has a chip on her shoulder, and an attitude she takes with every student. She doesn't respond to messages. She can't be bothered to answer any questions you might have about the course. I would take any course but this one. Don't walk run from this class and her.
Tests are difficult but make sure you have the text book. Make sure to read over your grades test because some answers are marked wrong due to spelling errors by the professor or if you capitalize a word when the answer key is lower case. Wouldn't take her class again but needed to for a requirement. Good luck
Linda was responsive to emails. She was kind & addressed my questions clearly. The tests & exams give you one score until she goes in and adjusts them. The online CANVAS system is flawed. The tests were difficult to study for. I suggest make a study guide. Some of the material was dry for a media class. You can easily pass this class just keep up.
I was thoroughly disappointed! Class is not structured well! Very heavy reading! The class covers 2-3 chapters each week, exams are poorly put together (a mix of multiple choice, short answer, essay questions) and although I studied, it didn't matter. I finished with an A, but I do not recommend this instructor.
This was my first online course and now I know I'm not one for online classes. Lots of reading. Exams are weird and no studying will help you pass exam. She gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage! I think at one point I had up to 150% in the class. Extra credit will be your best friend cause in my case it was the only reason I left with an A
Linda is a very nice person and you can tell she enjoys teaching. That being said, I would not take this course again. It is very dry for a media class and the assignments are heavy. There is one quiz and a discussion post a week along with three major projects throughout the semester. The tests are four hours long and take the full time allotted.
This is a very hard course. Lots of homework. Don't procrastinate. She has all the homework locked so you cant access the next step until you complete the first one. I found the content of the class to be extremely boring. Make sure you site all your sources properly she is quick to call plagiarism even if you didn't do it on purpose.
Professor Schoen was a great professor for intro to media.
Even though I got an A in this course, I strongly don't recommend this instructor. The class assessments are very weird. For example we had an assignment to do a presentation about SRJC 100 anniversary, with the fact that the assignment have nothing to do with the course. She asked us to take photos on campus in an online class.
Very unclear with grading and not forgiving to any extenuating circumstances whatsoever. Control freak! emails and sends reminders to students about just-created assignments or assignments due in 8+ hours. Has a negative attitude with students who are trying to clarify information. If theres a better option for the class, I would take that class.
I felt like this was a pretty easy class. Test, quiz, discussion. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
She's Ok but BUSY WORK WILL KILL YOUR BRAIN. Be prepared for long, boring word searches, crossword puzzles and word games where clues don't match the textbook and don't teach you anything. Tests only ask you to regurgitate minute details. Projects come every week with no instructions, rubrics or models. Very little thinking in this class.
Very simple class, required video discussion posts which I personally hate. The class was boring but very easy.
during the pandemic i took this class for fall semester. every week discussion posts were unclear. some were video discussions, essays, and powerpoints. no finals or midterms but the midterms were used as due dates. a work load that required heavy reading and many lectures. each week provided a different levels with busy work.
Linda Schoen is by far one of the worst professors I've had in terms of effort put into her lessons, she makes it very clear she will do the bare minimum to get her paycheck. Expect odd assignments like crossword puzzles and video discussion posts, the worst one was where you had to create the questions yourself then answer them. awful.
To this day, Media 4 with Schoen has been my favorite class I've taken at the SRJC. The discussions and quizzes were extremely easy. There were fun puzzles to do every week as well. The two movies assigned and weekly lectures were also extremely interesting. If you do the work, you pass with an A. I definitely recommend taking this class!
She uses obscure websites I've never used and expects us to find a way to do the assignments while providing us with no visual representation of a completed one for reference. Then she grades it weeks later and by that time I've already submitted about 4 of the assignments already. Her rubrics are also trash.
Professor Schoen is full of knowledge, passion and dedication. I highly recommend her for your next class in Media.
Class was routine and well balanced. Read the textbook, answer some questions, do some short writings, a test, and a video discussion every 2 weeks. Sometimes the tests have wrong answers because questions are taken from old textbook editions, but if you message her she'll fix it and give you credit. Great class. Very simple and insightful.
This class is not that challenging honestly. A journal on padlet weekly, and then reading quizzes after reading 2 textbook chapters, discussion, and lecture video quiz due biweekly. Professor Schoen can be stingy on grading with her somewhat odd rubric, particularly on the padlet journals. Some funky applications. Lots of extra credit (45 pts)
The class I took with her is definitely a cruiser but beware of weekly padlet journal posts and biweekly GoReact videos (you record yourself) that aren't hard but do take some time to do. other than that, I can't say much about her as a person as we've never spoken outside of canvas comments. Other assignments are just easy multiple-choice quizzes.
I would NOT take any course from this teacher unless there are no other options! She critiqued my political affiliation instead of critiquing the quality of my paper. Once I realized she was politically brainwashed, I wrote from the perspective of MSNBC, and got an A in the class.
literally pick any other teacher. she has the worst attitude ever. her prompts make no sense and when asked she will give you attitude and tell you it makes sense to her so it must be right. you will have no political opinion she will scold you if you are not pro democrat. she is the worst teacher i have ever had and so rude. chose another teacher
There were a ton of assignments with journals due every week, and honestly, the class in general is just boring. She is also very political, and you can kind of tell what she wants to hear, so if your views don't align with hers, expect a bad grade. DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.
Her online class is very dry and boring. Involves a lot reading the online textbook, responding to discussion posts, and watching a 20 minute lecture where she reads off of a script. Very boring class. Do not take if youre wanting something more interactive
