Assigns too much homework for students in a short amount of time. She goes to fast for students to keep up. If had spanish in high school, you have a chance. If not you wont get a good grade.
Excellent instructor! Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and thorough!
Interesting teacher with loads of stories about her travels. She gives way too much homework. If you take her class be sure not to take too many more with it. Her homework is very time consuming. She teaches with a lot of energy and expects you to keep up. Her grading is horrible! You will have to play ridiculous games for class credit
Good teacher.Knows a lot about Spanish culture.Shares a lot of stories from her travels. She does have a quiz every week & there is quite a lot of homework. But if you are good at Spanish then you will enjoy her class. She goes above and beyond with study sheets & reviews right before quizzes. If your looking to do minimal work her class isn't for you.
She is annoying. If you want to be hand held and feel like your back in high school or junior high then this is the class for you! She needs to go teach kindergarten or something.
First time Spanish learner, this was exactly what I needed. Always willing to go over difficult assignments and answer questions by email outside of class. Homework reinforced everything we did in class and prep for the following week. Lots of assign. and work online, but no big projects. Weekly quizzes were replica of hw.
I received high As on all my tests and finished all of my homework yet I barely managed to get a B in the course because she has the worst grading scale ever! Attendance counts as 50% of your grade people. Only take this class if it is the only one you are going to take in the semester. Just an awful teacher.
I have had her for 101 and currently 102 and can honestly say that she is an extremely good teacher. She puts a lot of effort into her classes and it clearly shows. She has a wonderful personality and is by far my favorite teacher. She has made learning Spanish very enjoyable, I recommend taking her class as you will not be disappointed.
By far the best Spanish teacher I've had! She explains everything clearly, actually answers our questions, makes sure we are actually learning the language, and will even stay after class to answer one-on-one questions or explain anything. Her class isn't one of those classes you feel goes on forever. You won't be disappointed!
Overall, very nice teacher. It is obvious that she loves teaching. Spanish II is a much more difficult course but she makes it manageable. She creates study guides which cover pretty much exactly what will be on the exam and gives a lot of extra credit. As long as you do the homework, participate and attend class you are guaranteed to pass.
If you are going to take Spanish at Harper, this is the teacher you should take from. She is hands down the best spanish teacher I have ever had and she is so knowledgeable about the subject. She is passionate, enthusiastic, and fun to be in class with. She gives a ton of extra credit, so if you show up and do your homework you'll be just fine.
I don't have any bad things to say about her. I had her for 101 and 102 and loved it. She makes class fun and exciting and if you pay attention, actually do the work and show up to class, you will pass, guaranteed. She did a lot for me when I was struggling and although I had no chance of passing she did all she could to help. I will take her again
She makes you buy the book so you can use it about 5 times throughout the semester. She talks too much and she will spoon feed you like you're in kindergarten. I got a B- in this class because her attendance is mandatory. I just finished my 2 years at Harper and I have gotten all As besides in this course. She ruined Spanish for me.
Linda is a professional educator that's passionate about teaching. She really surpasses many other professors in the language field. Linda goes the extra mile to help her students comprehend & utilize the spanish language in this course. She gives extra opportunities to improve your grade. You do the work & you will have success, plain and simple.
I found there to be a great disparity between the grade students received and how well they learned. ... After taking my own lovely adventure through Costa Rica, I was quite motivated to learn Spanish. I learned as much as I could in her class and often did well on quizes. I felt like I was learning and doing well, but I got a D. Quite unmotivating
Great teacher, very willing to help. There is a lot of homework and many quizzes in this class, so you have to study. She goes above and beyond for her students and makes study guides/cheat sheets on her own time. She has lots of great travel stories and experienes to share about Spanish culture! Lots of opportunity for extra credit! Just study!
When you learn it is not supposed to be easy. I love this teacher with all my heart. She is one of the most intelligent people that I encountered during my studying experience. She speaks French fluently and she is into travelling a lot. Very passionate when she speaks about the countries that she visited. I am taking SPA 201 this time. Love her!
Took her class and loved her. Then I went on the trip to Ecuador. She was rude, talked about students behind their back and shared personal information about students to other students. Also, I got A's on all of my assignments, but wound up with a C anyways. In class, she rarely uses the book, but it's mandatory that you buy it. I don't like her.
She is a wonderful teacher and very enthusiastic, BUT her enthusiasm for her students learning Spanish makes her assign too much homework. Expect book work, online work, and worksheets every week simultaneously, including exam days. The final consists of an 18 page take home portion, online work, a debate to prepare for, and then the exam in class.
I had her for Spanish 101 and 102. She does assign a lot of homework, but that is because learning a new language takes a lot of practice! She is very approachable and she wants her students to do well. If she sees that you are making an effort, she is very helpful. I will also be taking her for 201. She is my favorite prof at Harper.
I had gotten all A's on exams and did the all of her ridiculous pages and pages of homework she assigned and barley got a B. I didn't learn anything in her class because your just trying to get through it all. She makes you pay almost $300 for a book that we barley used. If there another Spanish teacher to take I highly suggest it. Waste of time!!
This class is very easy, especially if you have taken Spanish in the past. The only thing is that you really have to stay on top of homework. She assigns a ton of online homework due on the days you have class AND on Saturdays. She does review a lot before quizzes and tests which is helpful. You MUST attend class, participation points are huge!
I really think she is absolutely fantastic! She assigns a lot of homework, so if you have an already heavy class load maybe find a different teacher. I did learn a lot from her and she is very fair. If you miss class you will have a hard time maintaining a good grade but show up and you'll be fine. She is super passionate and it's great!
Makes clear rules and will utterly screw you with that irritating smile of hers if you don't follow them to the letter. I'm fine with this, but she'll talk down to you if you ask about it, which is immature and abusive, and she'll act like it's a good thing she's being a hard-ass. Not in intermediate Spanish, lady.
Gives clear lectures but will trash your grade for ticky-tacky bullsh*t and clearly enjoys doing so. A politely nasty person best to avoid. Never used the textbook but lost points for not bringing it. This is what I mean about ticky-tacky crap.
Very easy class if you have taken spanish before, if you havent she will take it slow and help you. She is very energetic and gets everyone to participate. There is LOTS of homework both online and on paper. I took the 2 day a week class and there was online homework due daily except weekends plus paper homework. It gets annoying but she is good
Linda is absolutely amazing! She explains things in a way where we will remember it for the tests/quizzes. Always make sure you go to class and if you know you will be absent make sure she knows and you can get credit for the homework due. Her lectures are amazing and she tells AMAZING stories. I would take her 102, 201, etc. class for sure!!!
Linda is a passionate professor that loves what she does, she wants all o her students to succeed. She is always available to provide assistance when needed. Linda made the class a fun experience.
If you show up to class and do the hw (there is a LOT of it) you will get an A. No joke if you come to class and do the hw it'sphysically impossible to get less than a 70. Super nice and VERY helpful. Even though everything is pretty time consuming it's not too hard and you will actually learn and apply language. Allow 1-2 hr/day of hw! Recommend!
Linda is a very outgoing, and hands down one of the most memorable and fun teachers at Harper. Honestly, she feels more like a friend than a professor. She plans field trips for her classes, which are a blast and you'll learn a lot. Overall, she made learning fun and is always there for her students. I hope I'll have another class with her!
Attendance and participation really matters. She is strict about missing class so as long as you show up and do all the homework you'll be fine. Outside of class she is super funny and really cares about her students.
I took Linda's class in order to strengthen the Spanish that I learned- and subsequently forgot- in high school. Her class is very fast paced and difficult to keep up with, especially the homework. The super-site that I paid 150$ for, had difficult and very long assignments due as homework ON-TOP of the 3 sheets of paper homework.
Love her! She's amazing
An enjoyable teacher with an amazing personality, very connected with her students. lots of homework and online work. Usual a quiz or two a week. Lots of class participation, and group activities. Funny teacher and a really good teacher
She gives out a bunch of homework you have to print out yourself. You do the homework and she does not even go over it in class. Online homework is due 5 days a week. She can be funny but her class is fast paced with all the homework but she takes the class time to talk about her past irrelevant experiences. Would not take again
This class was extremely homework heavy. All homework is online and a majority of the stuff you learn is self taught because she rarely goes over the online homework. You print out 7 pages of homework for one day of class and only get 5 points for all of it. Only pro about this class is that I get a laugh out of her outfits everyday. Girl bye.
I like her as a person, but she is quite possibly the most disorganized person I've ever met. overbooks herself and runs class LATE. This class has a mandatory field trip. Professor has zero respect for students' time and work schedules.
Shes probably a good person but shes not a good teacher. She has no respect at all for peoples time as if they are only taking her class only. She would email you every saturday night with like 10 assignments to do before monday. Thats the type of person she is. VERY UNORGANIZED to a point where you think its impossible to be that lost
Professor Schumacher is amazing very nice and respectful. She's funny and is always ready to help you out. I took 101 and it was easy but then I took 102 and it was really difficult. The class consists of quizzes every week and online homework every day except Friday. This class is hard, so you need to pay attention and always show up.
So much homework. Run.
She gives out so much homework its exhausting and annoying when you have to spend 3 hours every day to finish this crap. She talks down on you when you question her and is so rude
At first i thought the class would be fun and easy but then i began to see how manipulative she is and its weird. The things we discuss in class are very weird as well she has no filter. Homework is everyday and you get 1-2 quizzes per week. Would be a good class if it was a different teacher.
I took her for two years. To be honest, if I didnt need the class to graduate i wouldve never taken it because it was basically torture. This class and teacher drained me mentally and ruined my life while i was taking it. Im so glad its over.
Something is off about her. It's an easy class but requires a lot of time outside of school. Theres homework everyday and on the weekend she emails you a list of assignments to get done before monday (usually emails saturday night lol). Yeah if there was another teacher id definitely take them shes wack
Unorganized and way too much homework. Crazy lady
Just an all around weird teacher. We got homework everyday even though class was only twice a week. We usually had 2-3 quizzes per week as well. We never were able to see our grade online so you never know how you're doing. I do kinda see how some people say shes manipulative because she uses the fact you dont know languages to an advantage.
Definition of passive-aggressive, shady, gossips about students she dislikes for no reason, assigns WAY TOO MUCH work, forces you on field trips or else you fail, takes your money, shemar moore obsessed and it's honestly annoying. RUN! She puts you down and doesn't listen to her own syllabus (communicates with her students via personal email and #)
I started at the 101 level & honestly really did enjoy her. I learned a lot during the first 2 classes but 201 & 202 were a joke. She assigned HOURS of homework, would email us at 2-4 AM & be PISSED that we didnt complete the work by class time. She gossiped about students & put particular students in super awkward situations. Nice but very fake.
The homework for this class takes up more time than 4 other classes combined. The teacher doesn't care about anyone's complains but rather blames it on the student. Very disorganized and assignments given on short notice. No empathy or leniency for student if they get sick or face other issues where they might miss class.
She teaches the material well. She is also crazy. Last minute homework is her jam. Like literally the morning its due she will add more. Not unlikely to have online homework that takes an hour or more plus 14 pages on written homework that needs to be printed out. The textbook is required. No mercy.
She is unorganized and has no sense of time management.
Linda does not know what day it is most of the time. She assigns a boat load of homework, and only collects what she feels like collecting. she doesn't tell you what your grade in the class is until 2 WEEKS before finals. if she assigns something on Tuesday night, you have to have it done wed. morning because you obviously have nothing else to do.
She may assign a lot of work but she is the nicest professor I have ever met. She is always ready to listen to you provided that you treat her with respect. She is so sweet and genuinely cares for her students.
This professor gives a lot of homework, but she typically posts schedule updates. As long as you pay attention to and regularly check Blackboard, while dedicating hours to homework, you will succeed. She is a very caring professor, so if you have any problems you can typically work them out with her.
I loved taking Spanish with her! She was one of the main reasons that I decided to major in Spanish . You have to work for this class and thats for sure, there are a lot of assignments and readings that you have to do... but it is a language course and repetition is key. If you stay organized and check blackboard regularly you will be fine.
Linda is an awful teacher. I took two years of french in high school and if I had not done well those two years I would not have passed her 101 and 102 classes. She has no concept of time management, she assigns way too much homework, and she assigns homework due on the day of the final. The homework is an hour online and six pages in class.
She gives so much homework, it's insane. Get ready to read a lot and do like 3 pieces of homework every day. She uses a lot of vocabulary that she doesn't ever enforce and kind of throws a lot of content at you.
Horrible experience so far.... Definitely a manipulative person dont like her character.
Because of COVID we're online. Her personality is harsh and makes you seem as if you aren't doing your best. She is a busy person, she doesn't respond to important emails. She assigns so much homework, which is ok, there needs to be a point where she realizes we have other classes and work. There's a rush to go through everything, JUST STRESSFUL
okay, so a lot of people are saying she gives a lot of homework. yes, thats true, but language requires lots of practice and it's not busy work. she has other classes and her time is used to the fullest in her classes. she is engaging and makes an effort to ensure every student understands the lesson before moving on. she offers tons of ec as well
If you are interested in learning Spanish, Professor Schumacher is a great professor and you will learn a lot. If you are taking Spanish as a requirement and have 0 interest in furthering your studies after it. Do not take her. Pros: Understanding, Knowledgeable, Interesting Cons: Lack of time management, Disorganized, Homework is excessive
Very bubbly personality and friendly which always makes learning more enjoyable. Feedback via email, homework, Webex always clear and detailed. Such a positive outlook on all things life and free spirited.
She definitely drinks too much coffee or something she is all ways all over the place in class and is definitely a little crazy!
Prf. Linda Schumacher is the absolutely worst prf. I have ever encountered. She will never respond to any of your emails nor phone calls. Impossible to contact this woman. So good luck!
It would be an easy class, if she was not so disorganized. She assigns homework randomly and has them due that day or the next day. It would range from 2-8 pages. It was so hard to catch up with the homework she assigned.
She would gives us 8 page of homework and have it due like the next day. For 5 points!!! She needs to understand her students have a life. We already are taking other classes and have so many responsibilities so don't waste our time making us do 8 pages of work for 5 points. That should be illegal.
DO NOT TAKE HER JUST DONT
TOO MUCH WORK! She would barely spend any time on each lesson and teaches 5 different things at once. I spent so much time just trying to finish the work that I couldn't actually learn it. She could never organize what we were doing in class so every day we went over the set time and still wouldn't finish everything. This class ruined French for me
She is by far one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She gives out too much work all that is due by the next day and before the class starts(so especially don't take a morning class of hers). She posts everything at 2am Friday nights and has stuff due Monday mornings. If you want to keep any mental sanity you have do not take this class.
Worst teacher ever. She is so disorganized and throws so much stuff at you during class. She is also really rude and talks back at students. She does not even have a weekly syllabus type things. She just posts assignments when she feels like it. I worked my butt off in that class, but she was still harsh with me.
She literally sets up for you to fail and she does it with a smile on her face
No time management skills whatsoever!! She gives us practically no time to do quizzes and tests. One time she gave us a 30 question test to do in 10 minutes that wasn't even multiple choice! She gives a boatload of homework and never had a professor during my whole time at Harper give so much homework. Do not take her. It is torture.
Do NOT take this class!!!! Worst Professor ever!!! Im warning you. If you want to keep your sanity, avoid this class at all costs. If I could I would give her a 0 but unfortunately thats not an option.
Rude professor who made an ableist comment toward me
I graduated about 5 years ago and I only came back on here to see if there is any mention of her being fired. She was extremely discriminatory and rude, I hope she isn't teaching there anymore. If she is, don't hesitate to report her craziness if needed. With love, past student of hers
Only took an oral exam with her for a summer class, but she was very condescending and expected my answers within 3-5 seconds. Unless you attend Harper, I do not recommend testing into Spanish from a different uni.
Horrible! I read these reviews & ignored them. HEED MY WARNING: She'll dump so much HW on you it's unmanageable. Even she complains about the workload. She's unclear, and you'll waste your money. She is HORRIBLE. I'm not here to complain, I'm warning you do NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE! DON'T TAKE HER CLASS. You WILL regret it! Please for the love of God!
Great teacher!
DO NOT TAKE this teacher! Awful! Unorganized! Doesn't respond to emails in a timely manner, doesn't provide clear explanations of assignments, mocks students; forgets to unlock assignments & doesn't provide extra time to accomplish the work. Controlling & manipulative. Sets u up to fail. Doesn't foster an educator attitude. Power trip high.
Great and understanding teacher.
It's 101 so I was ready to read a lot, but not this much. We had HW 5 days a week with the deadlines being that same day. Being an online course I thought I was getting more flexibility but this was the complete opposite. Don't do it if you have a full-time job or a few more demanding classes, you won't have time for anything else.
This class is a huge mess! I would never take any class with this instructor in the future.
Do not take this professor! She is rude and disrespectful. Tough grader. Tons of homework! Quizzes every week. The most stressful time for me because of this class. If you take other classes, have family or work full time, this class is not for you. Awful experience!
Rude and disrespectful, way too much homework, no flexibility with attendance, and grades very tough. Avoid this instructor if possible.
