nice, easy-going professor, not quite organize though
No Comments
very, very unorganzied
boring, unclear, doesn't know how to answer students' questions, makes all students confused, very hard marker.
even my ta is better then her, hard tests, very unclear lectures and notes.
an incredible professor, always understanding everything before class but being confused after her lecture
probably the most unorganized and boring professor i've ever met.
Dr. Welling is nice, and knows what she is talking about. I think, though, she enjoys sounding intelligent more than she is concerned with actually conveying information to the students. She did, however, make some effort to improve her teaching method by using examples, which were helpful
Hard to understand, examples in class involve too many theories and letters and not enough real life examples, hard to tranfer to text notes or test for that matter
Uninspiring if not boring, unorganized, and frequently snide. Her monotone voice, regular pauses, and constant attempts to sound sophisticated (instead of just getting the point across) make lectures more painful than my ingrown toenail. Also does not approach this course with the mathematical rigour necessary for an advanced micro course.
Her tests r straight from her examples in class. She is one of those profs that u can tell what she'll put on the midterm, so it makes it a lot easier. Her examples are very explicit which is good b/c the text book is ****. She doesn't put up with any **** from students Explains everything, but it takes some reviewing to grasp the concepts fully.
She is boring, tries to sound far more intellegent than she probably is which gets in the way of her connecting to the class and explaining the material. Furthermore, she is rude to the students and her exams are extremely hard. think 3 questions worth 24-34 marks each. completely unfair. Avoid her like the black plague.
what should i say? just do not take her class,if you have another choice. belive me. otherwise you will,,,,,
weird personality, not organized
Dont take any courses from her!!!!
She can't teach, She can't talk, She just Can't
Not nice , not willing to help studnets, mean and arrogant, not prepared for lecturing, couldn't imagine a more untalented professor for so many reasons. One of the worst pfor. she is not qualified to be a "teacher". bad quality. waste of time and money for students to take this important course from her. can NOT learn much.
Just one thing to say!!!! Donnnnnnnnnnnn't take any cousres from her!
Much better than in 400, she does actually know what she's talking about, and class was quite interesting. I suppose 'quirky' might be a nice way to describe her, but don't shy away from this course b/c of previous bad experiences, she's much better with a small class.
If you want to understand how disorganized professor welling is, take a look at her office. It is a blizzard of papers and books scattered to look like a messy frat house. Spending 5 minutes in her office, you will understand how this class will unfold. Completely disorganization, takes long pauses and loses train of thought. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
very un-organized
This course was a challenge because the exam was definitely not easy, but she was fair with students who would like to put effort on the course.
I thought about doing an honest assessment of the professor. here are my thoughts. I would say that she is not a good professor at all, cant explain things clearly to students. she is a learned person and there is no doubt about that but she does not have the ability to teach. Unorganized, always look confuse, does not answer questions clearly.
The bottomline is that Linda Welling is a bad professor. Although the course material was relatively easy, she managed to convolute everything to a frustrating degree. In every face-to-face interaction I had with her, she was unhelpful and occasionally outright rude. Her marking almost seemed arbitrary. My advice to UVic econ students: stay away.
horrible prof, go take a look at her office, its disgusting. I thought I was unpicky about profs until I had her, confusing, useless and disorganized like you would not believe.
Can't understand why this lady still has a job. If you can, avoid going to see her for class help or advising.
The worst professor I ever had. Just stay away if you have another choice.
Without doubt, the worst experience of my life so far.
Incomprehensible.
I've been to see her and talk to her because she is the academic adviser and it is a terrible experience. She seems to have zero interest in helping, and has yet to give me a straight up, helpful answer. You are much better off getting advise from a prof who has a desire to see you succeed. I would not even consider taking a class from her.
worst prof.just go to her office and you will know what im talkin about. Give hard questions on the exam. not clear about everything,no clues for the final.Dont take her class
I'm blown away this woman is employed here. Go to her office for help and you will understand. Her office is literally a garbage dump, it is disgusting to be in. She has an unfriendly attitude, and seems to go out of her way to NOT help you. Having this woman as the advisor lowered my opinion of the whole department.
Should not be teaching here at all. She just lowers the standard of the econ dept...Unclear, unhelpful, harsh tests, lazy advisor. Useless.
Completely disorganized, office is the messiest in the dept. Not terribly helpful. Does not answer questions in a clear and simple manner
I took this class 'cause it happened to fit in with my schedule. I DIDN'T WANT TO. I went to her for undergrad advising, and every question I asked, she looked up on the website! I was like "Um, trust me. If the information was on the website, I wouldn't be here!" She's sarcastic, cynical and disorganized. I vote DON'T deal with her...
She made a relatively straightforward class extremely convoluted and confusing. She did this by not clearly answering questions, and by being very unhelpful when it comes to providing any information. Lastly, she will blame the student and take marks off assignments for things she does not even explain when handing out. MAKE HER EXPLAIN CLEARLY
Theoretical Economist very interesting class. Fair marker. Likes the talking rather than the math side of econ.
If you want to lose your little sister, drop her off at her office.
I actually really enjoyed this class and Dr. Welling did a good?although at some points tedious and incomprehensible-job with the material. Having a good understanding of the math is not a must for understanding the course but it helps big time. I can't believe all the negative comments on here about her, I find her try interesting during lecture
She is absolutely the worst prof I have ever seen in my life. She is unwilling to help, she intentionally makes things confusing, and she blame students of not studying hard enough. She sometimes refuses to answer questions and simply tell you to look up online or talk to someone else.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS WHATSOEVER!! She gives weird questions on exam, she is unwilling to help, and her lectures make no sense. If you ask her questions, most of the time she just try to "kick you away". She lowers Uvic's standard badly.
A mass of ambiguity. Don't take her class, you will be screwed. Her class does not focus too much on math, but rather on unnecessary stuff. She has a weird marking approach that provides you unfair grades.
very hard to understand, low clarity, very confusing.
she is the worst. I had here coz i had no other option. She makes no sense at all. Her midterms are crap. Very vague, she wants students to answer in detail. Her problem sets are the only material to prepare for the midter but nothing is relevant in the actual midterm. Avoid her
I never thought a professor could have such a large impact as to result in you getting an unfair grade. This course, I was proved wrong...hopefully she will be replaced in the near future. Worst professor I have ever had.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS WHATSOEVER! She is extremely unorganized. No helpfulness, exams are ridiculous. study materials are NOT relevant to exams AT ALL. Trust me, if you were a normal human being, you will regret so much if you take her class.
Linda Welling: the worst professor I have ever come across. She has absolutely no respect for students and she acts as though we are beneath her. Her notes and problem sets are all she provides when studying for tests, yet they are full of typos. Her questions are ambiguous. You'll lose marks for no reason. Avoid her
Well I made a mistake and didn't pay attention to all the comments here and took her class. I regret my decision. I dont think she is a bad person but I think somewhere she has lost all her passion for teaching. I hate the fact she doesnt follow the textbook and has no assignments to learn from.
im an internetional student. My fee is $1600 for a class. After i took this class, i felt like i just paid for nothing and wasting my time, havent learnt anything, the prof cant even answer the questions.I am so worried about how she grade, cause it doesnt make sense.im so frustrated at this point.=[
I can not believe uvic has this kind of professor for requiment classes. She is ruining Uvic reputation.
Inconsistent, incorrect, unorganized, unfair
Terrible. After writing the final which I felt great about brought my letter grade down from an A to a B-. Unfair marker to say the least. Avoid her if you can because she's hands down the worst prof I've had in three years.
Absolutely terrible. Rude to students, completely scattered, the worst teacher I've had at Uvic during my 4 years, actually worst teacher I've ever had in my whole life. If you need 313, wait until some one is teaching it.
Worst Professor I have ever had. She openly admitted she did not have an understanding of the material she was teaching (Economic Law), Vague, Assignments didn't make sense. Impossible to do well.
Worst Professor ever...it would probably help if she took some classes on teaching. Totally uninvolved.
Really bad
I feel badly for this woman. I think she enjoys the subjects she teaches, but she is terribly disorganized and vague, and her idea of help consists of telling you to "review your notes". Worst mark I've ever had at UVic, if you can get by without this class i would highly recommend not taking it.
Overall not bad. Admitted Law and Economics was not her field but engaged class in current events and seemed interested in the research she did for the class. Helpful in office hours. Very knowledgeable if not always approachable
I've learned that, especially for her midterms and finals, you can get around her vague questions with vague answers. I mistakenly elaborated on things too much and lost marks - best to keep it as a simple, written answer.
Unorganized. Beyond that an interesting prof, knows her material. Has trouble relating to students in a lecture format, but if approached 1 on 1 is nice&helpful. Unlike other econ classes where you regurgitate info, on her exams you have to think and be able to write about more than just the direct question being asked. May be difficult for ESLs.
Stay away from this professor.
worst prof ive ever had. so hard to do well despite being as easy course because she has no idea how to teach and cant explain anything properly. lectures were boring and unhelpful, and assignments were hard because she didnt teach you how to do anything! avoid at all costs.
Easily the worst prof I have had. The incompetence displayed in the "exam review session" was infuriating. She should be a politician, never have I seen such an ability to neither help with comprehension or provide answers. I seriously question her ability to mark a test if she cant even answer questions in class
Worst prof ever. She belittles you, makes you feel stupid, yet always teaches you the wrong thing and revises it the next day. Do not take her class as she makes easy material harder than necessary. IF you decide to take her class, expect to be able to read her mind as her midterm questions "implies" questions not asked. good luck (you'll need it)
She lieterally wants us to made up your own questions and answering them to prepare for the final. problem set are nothing like thr final. you need to answering things she does not asked in order to get full marks. the only thing i learned from her class is all electronic divices goes away other than using for class. you will be too.
- Takes off points for not copy and pasting her answers. - you might get lost in the clutter in her office. Counted 4 forks strewn around the ground when I visited. - many points, no room You will rue the day you signed up with her. Get your belongings, stick your thumb up and hitchike to Alaska where she can't find you. Or take Donna Feir.
Rating is 1.6 right now. Too high for her. If you're stuck in her class, God have mercy on your soul. Not particularly hard, but I still rated it a 1 anyways because I don't want to artificially raise her mark, since I'm upset that RateMyProfessors won't let me give zeros. She is a terrible teacher. I mean it. Change plans if possible.
I had no choice but to take her class and I was ready for the worst. But she turned out to be a lovely lady, not like any of these reviews on here. She genuinely liked teaching and her class was quite easy. Exams were just like the practice ones she gave us. I think the other reviews on here are a bit dramatic. She is one of the nicest profs!
I took 313 and 311A with Dr Welling and was prepared for the absolute worst. I was pleasantly surprised with her. She is a great lecturer especially in 313 she goes very slow and draws every graph step by step. Absolutely have to know definitions basically word for word. Her tests are very similar to the previous ones. She's great in office hours.
A definitely tough marker.
Please choose another teacher if you want to get an hounor degree. She marks really hard tough.
Rude to students, lecture slides are a mess and don't correspond to the uploaded slides available to students, and a tough marker. The worst prof I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and take 313 when she's not the one teaching it.
Linda Welling is awful at teaching the course, questions asked in class are not answered and if they are expect to understand nothing. Would not take another course with her ever again.
Linda is not nearly as bad as a lot of reviews says she is. Had her for both 313 and 311A and she was great! Her tests are always fair with lots of opportunity to get part marks. She's a little odd but she is overall very nice and very helpful in office hours. Attending class is very helpful as she does lots of examples on the board.
Linda gave us two midterms in the term. She really takes the time to clearly explain concepts, and goes through them a few times which helps to explain them. Her tests are very similar to the practice, so study those! She is a very sweet lady, and wants her students to do well.
Worse professor ever. Rude to students, and unorganized lecture.
Linda is pretty decent. I learned in her class and I'm happy with my grade. If you study for this class, there will be no problem. Linda likes it when you memorize definitions and include those definitions in your answer.
Linda is a terrible teacher who teaches economics. Her lecture are pointless and extremely disorganized. Also, her marking style is too unacceptable and strict. I highly recommend to avoid her.
313 isn't very easy and she makes the class even harder.
If you choose her class, it's really important to learn by yourself. You would be fine if you practice the questions on the textbook.
if i could give a zero id be all over it
a hard class
I was expecting the worst based on these reviews, but Linda is not that bad. She tells you what will be on her exams during lectures and posts practice questions. She could be a bit more organized but she is helpful and a pleasant person once you get to know her.
Very "excellent" professor! I "enjoy" her class very much! Tests were too "easy" to do well!!!
Linda Welling is the rudest professor that I have ever encountered in my university experience. I personally don't go to class and prefer to study via the textbook. She is rude and unhelpful both via e-mail and in person. She believes that she should never have to clarify herself, even when instructions are ambiguous. Do not take her class.
A literal joke. Rude and unhelpful. Also her office looks like a bomb went off.
Reading these reviews scared me, but Linda is not bad at all. She means well and she is helpful once you get past her hard shell. She is a bit disorganized at times but she is very smart and you can learn a lot from her.
While she is without a doubt rough around the edges, she definitely knows her stuff. Not the easiest person to approach at times, but just go to class, do the work and you'll be fine. Oh, and turn off your cell phone!!!
No matter what anyone says about Dr. Welling, if you are a good student and are trying to get the A range grade she is an amazing professor. Her lectures are slower paced so really pay attention because she expects you to know every definition and every graph perfectly. If you skip class and are just trying to pass take it with Donna Fier.
After hearing my friends talking about Donna's class I was hoping for something similar. The two classes after comparison are night and day. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH LINDA. Ridiculous marker, disorganized lectures. How this prof is allowed to teach a core class like 313 blows my mind. Take Donna's 313, trust me.
tough grader and her grading rules are ridiculous. Never take her class.
Nice professor!
May this be a warning to everyone reading this. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Not only is she a terrible lecturer, but she is downright rude. The whole experience was unpleasant.
The reputation here is true I won't take her class again I regret that I took this class with her
Linda treats you like a first grader. I felt she really didn't know the material and when asked a question stared at the slide for a few seconds and than said it's in the notes. The exams were like the practice exams so i got a good mark in the class, but beware of having to deal with her for a full term. It really was hilarious at times.
Linda should not be an educator. She is not very knowledgeable of the material, she makes the tests ridiculously hard, and she tends to ramble during class. She is very unorganized!! Overall gives the impression she does not care about you. Avoid her class if you can!
Disorganized, skips steps in math equations she does as examples "because I've done this so many times". Gave first semester grades back 1 week AFTER second semester started. Gave 1 of 2 midterms back before the final. Changed course outline 1 week before final to omit a grading rubric where your best midterm counted for 60% of the midterm marks.
I would highly not recommend this professor. On a positive note, Dr. Welling has an effective knowledge of the material she teaches and is willing to answer any questions during office hours in a clear and helpful manner. However, her tests are too long (tough to finish!), her grading is ruthless, and overall her personality is not a likable one.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!!!!
Stay far away. This prof is not a teacher and marks very hard.
Knowledgeable about the material but very unorganized. Spends the first 10-15 mins of class getting her slides ready and blames the school about the tech although it's obvious it's her own laptop's issue. Very strict about her rules(no phones, no talking, no taking pics of notes) Not the most friendly prof but don't take things personally.
Linda is disorganised, anxious and rude. However, she comes by it naturally and isn't mean herself. The course material isn't too difficult but having Linda teach it can be a ridiculously frustrating. Linda is very smart but she would benefit greatly from someone else helping her organising the course. PS having a few assignments would be great
Welling is by far the most disorganized prof Ive had during my undergrad at UVic. Lectures are difficult to follow and her teaching skills are lacking. With Econ 313 being a required course with a minimum grade requirement for most students, Im shocked that she is allowed to teach it. Course mark relies on a 40% midterm, 55% final and 5% quizzes
Super disorganized and decently rude. There isn't much point to go to class since she barely teaches anything but she does hint at stuff that will be important. her slides are helpful so you can just teach yourself off of those. Don't waste money on the textbook.
Linda is very disorganized. She missed the first three classes. She thought the class started at a different time and didn't show until 30 mins in. Other times she had something come up and only emailed less than an hour before hand so you were stuck waiting around. She's lost an assignment and I've gone to her 5 times about it with no answers.
Incredibly disorganized making it very difficult to have a sense of how you are doing in the course. Midterms could take months to be handed back. Class notes are all over the place and hard to follow, and her lectures are almost worse. All in all, a very frustrating prof to have.
Horrible prof. Stay clear if you can. I need this for credit so was stuck. Based on all the feed back on this site I cant understand why she is still allowed to teach at UVIC. Tests are too hard and take too long.
Shows up late to class unprepared, terrible (no) direction and criteria for the group project. I ended up doing 80% of the group project that involved 3 other people. I communicated my issue with her and she basically told me to suck it up. Avoid Linda at all costs.
Do not give feedback!
She reminds me of a deer trying to play ice hockey. Deer don't ice hockey. She is disconnected from reality and has double standards. I don't really trust her to even calculate my final grade correctly. I learned nothing in this class and just used my past knowledge to make educated guesses. The lectures seemed like a 2 year old playing scrabble.
Honestly, she is a nice person. But not a good teacher. She's everywhere - her mind wanders. She has a good heart though. But I would not take her class again.
Nice and caring person. But, unorganized, late, all over the place prof. Very hard to stay focused and understand what she is trying to teach when you go from 'this' to 'that' repeatedly. Review for tests is ok, a little broad ("study the textbook questions"). Notes just don't make sense sometimes. Again, nice person, but avoid if possible
awful professor
She doesn't seem to know what she was doing
Clearly has no respect for students. Office is a mess..
Forgets what she is talking about at least 4 times a class I went to office hours and she could not answer the question she assigned, surprisingly this was not a shock to me but the smell and condition of her room was a surprise Should have an in-class assistant to help her teach next year
terrible class and an even worse professor Her bright space page and marking is more complicated than the actual course would not wish this on my worse enemy to take this course
I have no idea why the university still lets her teach at uvic, I took her ECON 308 Economics and Law course and she has no idea about anything law related. extremely unorganised, cant stay on the same train of thought. teaches useless content that is extremely confusing and convoluted.
This class was so boring and even though I tried so hard to be engaged, I just couldn't. She is very sweet but I would never take a class with her ever again. If you don't need to take a class with her, don't. Her assignments weren't particularly hard but I always felt like I had to learn everything on my own since her lectures were 99% yapping.
It is difficult to follow lectures, and they are hardly worth attending. She does seem to care about the students but you'll never know what to study for exams.
Horrible course outline, 45% on final and 30% on midterm. Even in-class assignments for participation are graded.
Linda Welling could not teach a fish to swim. Her lectures are like pulling teeth there is no order on her chalk board. She has no slides, speaks convolutedly about the subject than goes on minute long tangents about nothing several times a lectures. She is hostile to questions and heavily judgemental. Bad grading scheme. Should not be teaching.
Linda couldn't find water if she fell out of a boat. Judging by these reviews, she's been blaming the fact that she can't figure out how to transfer files between computers on university tech problems for 5+ years. Lectures are horrible, she's rude to students (and wonders why they don't respect her). A blemish on the economics department
As someone who took this over the summer & knows the horror show of 313 in Spring 2024 from friends , I can say the course breakdown (~50% midterm, ~50% final, ~5% participation) is a common thread irregardless of prof. However Lijun Spring 2025 seems better, more engaging, and less exam-heavy. 313 is a grinder course!
Linda could not even make a word document if paid $1,000,000. Midterm prep filled with errors, no answer key, unclear wording, her TA can't even decipher her hieroglyphics. Her TA should teach the course, she is 10x more qualified to handle students and is the only thing keeping 91 students from failing. Linda deserves the TA salary not a professor
ECON 308: Economics & The Law The class content is rather dull and she just speaks from what the textbook says, but if you try to ask her something she usually responds by saying “I'm not a lawyer so I wouldn't know.” She seems somewhat lost in the entire material, and if you are hoping to learn anything about Law or legal system, you won't.
material itself is not even hard but she makes it more difficult somehow. if you can do self-learning you'll be fine. rude to students. her TA should be teaching instead she is great.
The negative with Linda is her personality and how she treats her students. However, since I attended 90% of all her lectures, I can say that what she teaches in class (i.e. graphs, diagrams, and methods) were all in the exam. Only self study I really had to do was regarding definitions and terms. Her grading breakdown was terrible and confusing.
Professor Welling's lectures can be tough to follow, and attendance doesn't always feel worthwhile. However, with the help of resources like unstuck study, I was able to supplement the course material and still learn a lot on my own.
I dreaded taking this class because of the poor reviews, and it was as I expected. Linda is very unorganzied and takes far too long on the earlier subjects. The best thing to do is to study hard for her first midterm exam because its easy. The TA was the most helpful at explaining the concepts.
