She is a new teacher this year and the worst professor I've ever had. She means well and is really nice but she is an awful teacher. Friends that have her for SOC220 say she has no idea what the course is even about and gives a lot of busy work. She treats everyone like they're a child and talks way too much and ruins discussions.
Hamm really tries to make sure that her students understand all the topics that are covered. Homework is easy, and in-class participation is also very easy. The course is not difficult and she lays it out well.
Lindsay is super nice but she changed our grading system several times over the semester, which was majorly confusing. You HAVE to get a 90% in participation to get an A so going to class is not optional. If you do not like REVEL, you're in for a surprise. Almost all of your homework is on REVEL or Blackboard. It is easy to get an A if you show up.
She was really really REALLY nice but didn't like how she changed grading system many times. Turns out that as long as you do the shared writings and do a somewhat ok job on REVEL homework you're in the clear. Lectures were kind of hard to follow since she didn't stick to what was being covered in book but it was an interesting class overall.
Currently taking the soc 220 class. It is not terribly difficult, but realize that the notes and general meat of the class come from the UNREQUIRED textbook by Joel Best. The required textbook isn't much help except for the papers. The lectures are weird and meandering with guest speakers. She herself is very kind and helpful if you ask.
She is really nice and understanding. I took SOC220, and you have to get 1000 points for a perfect A, and there are 3000 points available. I was able to finish early without too much effort. As far as the class goes though, I didn't learn much or feel like I had much of a meaningful experience. It was my blow-off class.
The way that the class was set up was that for an A you only needed 950+ points. She offered over 2,000. I was able to get the cutoff for an A buy late March and I did not have to go to class after. She is the sweetest and she loves to make conversation with students. Interesting class. I learned more than I expected too. Loads of iClicker points.
I wish that I would have enjoyed this course more, given how much I loved criminal justice. However, I wasnt able to enjoy this course almost at all, aside from a handful of times. This is mostly due to the fact that the syllabus was changed multiple times and the guidance was hit or miss. Would not take again, but it wasnt awful.
Dr. Hamm tries her best to make accommodations for her students, throughout the course the schedule was changed about three times. Each time she would ask for feedback from the students before she implemented changes. Interesting course, there are a lot of points available and an A is easy as long as you turn everything in on time and put effort in
The class was very easy, and she did a good job teaching it. If you didn't get an A+, you didn't try.
Presents material in a convoluted matter. Had to resort to the web for a clear understanding of the subject matter. Would not recommend this professor.
I took SOC 220 online and would not recommend. She was extremely picky with her grading. Additionally, her exams were much more difficult than they should have been. I thought this was going to be an easy A, but the class takes up a lot more time than I think it is worth. The only good part is you only need 930 points of 1490 points to get an A.
She was one of the sweetest teachers that I have ever had. I did not put a lot of effort into everything that I submitted and the tests that I took, but I was still able to get an A+. If you are going to submit all the assignments or most of them, then you can be a little lazy, but if you want to only submit a few then you have to try really hard.
Professor Hamm is such a nice person! I loved taking her class. She really likes to interact with her students and her class is SO easy. If you're taking SOC100, you have to have Hamm. She offers 1600 points and you only need 975 for an A+!!! That means you can skip both midterms and the final and still get an A!!! She does iClicker points too.
Lindsay is the absolute best. I had her for SOC 220, and I passed that with an A, so when I found out she was the professor for this class, I was excited. She really cares about the material and her students, and if she's not too certain on a specific topic, she prefaces with that before presenting it to the class. Fantastic class & fantastic prof!
One of the best professors I had, super kind and caring and work load is very minimal.
Professor Hamm is an amazing teacher. She goes well in depth on her topics but does teach rather quick. The grading system is very different but much easier. TONS of extra credit available. Easy A
Great professor, very caring and wants every student to pass. I had her for a hybrid class and I really recommend that. She gave a lot of iclicker points that helped boost grades. As long as you go to lecture and do the homework, you will get an A.
She gives you every chance to do well in the class. Put in effort and it'll pay off
Dr. Hamm is great. Sweet gal
Professor Hamm is a good lecturer. This class has an abundance of extra credit and you can actually choose how to earn your points. There is a lot of work involved, but it's not difficult. If you are willing to put in the time it's an easy A+.
Gives a breakdown of grades in the beginning of the course and makes it easy to get an A. Realizes that many STEM or engineering kids take this class so makes it not too difficult to balance with a full course load. Really sweet and caring and the stuff you learn is interesting too.
I loved her class and her teaching style so much it made me want to add a second major in sociology!
Loved this class and loved the way she allowed us to discuss topics of Hate and Violence (what the course covers) that mattered to us. There were a lot of group discussions in class.
I took SOC220 with Dr. Hamm and loved it. She really cares about whether or not her students are understanding the material and doing well. There were 1500+ points available but you only needed around 950 for an A+ so there was a lot of choice and leeway on what assignments you did and didn't have to do. I didn't even have to take the final!
Hamm is a great teacher and realizes that her students are busy and have other things to do. She allows you to get points where you need them and doesn't penalize you for skipping assignments (even the exams are OPTIONAL. Once you have 975 points (an A) I could stop with the class. She is passionate about the topics in this course & makes it easy!
As long as you have a pulse you can get an A+ in the class: à la carte style grading. Kinda a snooze/mediocrely run but its a decent introduction to sociology.
Good introduction to Sociology. Professor Hamm genuinely wants everyone to do well in her class and has structured it in such a way where it's pretty easy to get an A. I just wished this class was a little more interactive.
Prof Hamm is one of my favorite professors at Purdue. She really wants her students to learn the subject, and does an excellent job teaching it. She is very communicative and is willing to work with you.
Class was by design made so it was easy to get an A+ - in fact I don't even have to take the final. Not only is it easy, but the content can definitely be enjoyable, and you will certainly learn. Really, the best of both worlds between easy difficulty, and content learning. Overall a well designed course, and a good professor.
She was a really great teacher! I enjoyed going to her class. I love how she does her grades and she is extremely fair on how she grades. I highly recommend it.
I loved the setup of this class. Ended up being done with the class a month before school ended. Tons of opportunities to earn points. Class is just point accumulation so just do the work early, and it'll pay off in the end.
I said attendance is mandatory, but the way she does points is you can pick and choose what you do in the class, and pass. For example, I didn't have to take the last test or do the essay, and I still got an A+. If you don't want to go to class, you can get points in a different way.
Loved her! She gives you over 1400 points and you only need 930 for an A. You get to pick which assignments you want to do or pass on. I took this class asynchronous online and she responded to my questions very fast. Super helpful and very easy A!
Super easy to get an A, point-based class. She makes sure everyone gets an A. I did not even have to take the final exam.
Dr. Hamm's Social Issues class is one of the best classes at Purdue. She is very caring and it shows in your posts and emails. She has a very clear syllabus and it's not hard to achieve a good grade in this class at all. The class topics were also not boring, they were interesting and applicable to our social problems.
Dr. Hamm is nice, but sometimes it felt like she was pushing her own opinions too far into the material. Class was very informative and easy. Just wished she taught the material and left opinions or side comments out of lecture.
This class is super easy, and the professor makes sure everybody gets an A. However, the articles and videos she chose for quizzes were too biased and misleading.
Dr. Hamm does a good job of exposing you to a variety of sociology topics. Lectures were good and she seems to care that everyone does well. Easy A if you put in the effort to learn.
Dr. Hamm is very sweet and her class is very easy if you put in any effort. This class has way more points than you need to get an A (an A is like 950 pts out of like 1400 available points) and you get multiple attempts on almost every assignment. My one complaint is that every outside material was liberal, there was no diversity of opinion/sources
While I had to take this class, as it was required for me to graduate, I did not enjoy this class at all. There is an excessive amount of work that needs to be done, while she does allow some freedom to choose what assignments you do/do not complete. She is also extremely liberal and most of the material bashes anyone who has an opposing view.
She was amazing
Super easy class. You don't even have to go to lecture. I finished this course three weeks early with an A+ by putting in very little effort. Would definetly recommend her if you need a sociology credit.
Dr. Hamm is very kind and considerate and makes sure that all her students are doing well in the class. This class is based on points, and there are a thousand ways to get to an A in this class, it all depends on how much time and effort you put into it.
Hamm is AWESOME! She understands college and is so lenient on points and attendance. I am somebody who took sociology as a requirement to graduate but she gave me this passion for sociology that I never knew I had! She gives out more than enough credit to get an A+ and genuinely wants students to succeed and not feel overwhelmed. Love her!!
Dr. Hamm is so caring and flexible. Easiest A I have ever earned. She gives you a shocking amount of chances to earn an A, the attendance was not mandatory or necessary to succeed, she will do everything possible to help you if you reach out to her, and all of the reading materials are free. I cannot recommend her as a professor more.
Dr. Hamm is extremely flexible and it's honestly difficult to NOT do well in her class. She gives so many opportunities for points and lets students pick some topics which I loved. She's always available to talk outside of class and attendance isn't mandatory since she posts the core materials online. Lectures are just if you want some extra info.
Professor Hamm is extremely knowledgable about the content she teaches, and is also very caring towards students and provides so many opportunities for extra credit. All textbook readings were posted online for free, and attendance is not required. She is one of the few professors who genuinely wants to see her students succeed in her class.
Actually had her for SCLA101 but RMP wouldn't let me choose that. Had her first semester into college and loved her. Very caring and lenient with grading. Homeworks were just readings and a short response, had to write 3 reflections on out-of-class cornerstone events. Only reason I got a B was for straight up not doing work. Otherwise an easy A.
Super nice! Really the only tough part about the class is taking lecture notes & making sure you finish assignments pertaining to the class points
Had her in the summer of 2020 and it was pretty easy. She's very nice and makes lectures interesting.
Attendance is 10% of your grade and showing up to lectures doesn't even guarantee you get full attendance points. There are a number of questions based on the curriculum given during the lecture and if you don't get a question right, that negatively affects your attendance grade.
She has a lot of drops built into the syllabus as well as leniency. For example, 2 of our 5 exam scores were dropped and we were given a week to take each exam. I would definitely recommend getting the textbook or finding a pdf online as many of the quiz and exam questions come from material in the book that isn't necessarily in lecture slides.
She is an engaging lecturer and the class is super easy. You get points for Iclicker questions in class, but have plenty of drops. You only have to do quizzes/homework like once a month and they are very easy. Tests are all online on brightspace, there is bonus and a curve.
Prof. Hamm values attendance/participation. We answer i-clicker questions each lecture, and if you get them incorrect, you do not get full points -- although these are supposed to count for attendance purposes. She desires undivided attention from the class and will call you out and/or embarrass you if you talk when you are not supposed to.
She is a nice human being and a great lecturer. She can be speedy sometimes but she makes sure you understand the material and takes time to answer your questions. The exams are collaborative and the assignments are easy as well. She gave a lot of drops too. But overall I really liked this class, the content, the environment, and the professor.
Amazing prof, very easy class as long as you do your work. There is not a whole lot of homework each week and you can do it all at the beginning. Exams are easy if you pay attention. 1010 would take this class again.
Overall, her class was pretty easy. Homework was straightforward - we had a lot of drops. She posts lecture slides & recordings, as long as you meet the minimum attendance requirement for iClicker quizzes, you don't need to go to class. There's a lot of EC opportunities as well, as long as you do the work.
Dr. Hamm is a great professor and you can tell she does care about her students. One thing I did not like about this class was how there are mandatory iClicker quizzes every lecture, and you get an actual grade on them. A lot of the questions are confusing and I rarely got 100% for participating in class, although I showed up everyday.
Very kind and understanding. She added so many drops for attendance, quizzes, etc. You are allowed to work together on exams, and the exams are easy. I cannot fathom how you cannot do well in this class. She presents some interesting statistics during class, but usually lecture is sooooo slow
She gives interesting lectures and coves all exam material in class. She is a very fair grader and gives a lot of extra credit so it is easy to get a good grade.
GOAT Sociology professor. The lectures were fun(not boring). The homework isn't too bad(discussion boards and stuff) but if you can't think of something to say for some topics, it might be a bit challenging. She dropped sooooo many assignments at the end lmao and I didn't even have to take the final cuz I did fine on the previous exams. W Gen Ed
Dr. Hamm genuinely has a passion for what she teaches. However, she seems to forget that students have other classes than just hers. She changed the entire course format halfway through the semester from having exams, to having essays take their place. Deadlines overlap so you can never focus on just 1 assignment. Take another instructor instead
I took Soc 220 awhile back and she always called people out on the exams who bothered her in class. She would make several "fake" examples of how students disrupt her class. She's very awkward to talk to and smiles creepily at you but then makes horrible comments about the class. A very odd individual.
Great professor.
I had her during early start in Summer 2020, and she was truly amazing and understanding for the situation we were in at the time. I would highly recommend her since the class is easy, and she is so kind and welcoming.
her grading is light
you need some attendance but she grades easy
Prof. Hamm is a good instructor. She uses iClicker to keep attendance and make sure everyone was paying attention to the material. There are lots of assignments where you have to annotate 3 times in a document/video, so make sure to carve out time for that. She does have grace periods though, so you can make up certain missing assignments.
Only assignments were leaving comments on videos or textbook chapters. Essays instead of exams and our class elected to only count 1 out of 3. Attendance is mandatory through iClicker quizzes, but some can be dropped. She seems nice, but would sometimes send out really backhanded emails and wasn't the kindest when I asked her a question in class.
Dr. Hamm was a great lecturer and cared immensely about all of her students. She always loves to hear student input for class to make it more enjoyable for her students. The first few weeks of classes had a lot of reading and reflections, however, as the semester progressed the coursework started to slow down and become very manageable.
Easiest class I have ever taken! Ended with 99.7 and I went to less than half the classes. 3/4 of the class is graded on online homework and there is only one essay. I have no idea what the class was about because I didn't go but I still got an almost perfect grade. If you have the opportunity to take it with her do it, it is a free gpa booster.
She is a decent professor and seems knowledgable, but she made the Brightspace page the most confusing, unintelligible part of the class. She also didn't explain assignments effectively, and there were few to no resources on Brightspace to confirm anything.
Might be the most disorganized course I have ever taken
Most unorganized class I've ever taken in Purdue. Also, I don't think Dr. Hamm knows what academic dishonesty is. You don't submit a paper to one of the 2 platforms specified (which makes no sense), and you are possibly getting an honor code violation complaint to the ODOS. Just don't take this class from her.
The most self concerned professor I have ever had. The messiest Brightspace as well. Zero to no clear navigation or due dates. She uses three platforms for homework, and doesn't know how to use them. She uses AI to grade you. She does not care about your learning, just hearing her own voice.
Her brightspace is not accurate, she uses technology she doesn't know how to use. Theres brightspace, circuit, and persuall. There are due dates that have changed with no edits to the syllabus, and due dates in other platforms that are not announced or posted on brightspace. She's very condescending and thinks her class is the only one you're in.
class is easy, but wow is Dr Hamm self-righteous. Blames students for not understanding her illogical rules/assignments. Openly uses AI to do all her grading and question answering. Rescheduled 80% of assignments without changing due dates, just very frustrating. I have spent more time figuring out the logistics of the course than any work.
Dr. Hamm was very understanding and accommodating to her students. She adapted when assignments were difficult and gave extra credit. Her lectures and examples were all relevant to current events and explanations were clear. She used iClicker for participation, but a large amount of them were dropped so missing class wasn't a big deal.
Very disorganized. I struggled trying to understand where her assignments were even located. I emailed her a couple times asking where a certain assignment was and she responded in a sassy matter. Uses technology that she doesn't even know how to use.
DO NOT recommend if you need organization! She changed the whole structure of the course, switching everything from exams to essays three weeks into the course.
One of my favorite professors at Purdue so far, very accommodating and involved with students.
Really nice and easy going.
Disorganized Brightspace and unclear due dates. Does not explain why an answer on the (required) iClicker is correct, even if the entire class got the question wrong, just makes you feel dumb. Lots of AI talk, and you have to use her "AI teacher's assistant" on papers that have very unclear directions.
Required attendance but lectures were only worth going to when she explained requirements for essays or homework. I wanted to like her but she can be pretty condescending. The homework felt pointless like we were doing the same thing over and over again. I agree with the comment that figuring out the logistics was the worst part of her class.
She was a great professor and it is easy to succeed in her class. She cares about the well-being of students and cancels class depending on the weather! She offers 3 weeks of drops in the class. There are two essays and two exams in the course (one gets dropped). If you go to class and do the annotations, you automatically get 70% in the class.
Dr. Hamm is very nice and listens to her students if they need help. However, she is a really harsh grader and will give you a bad grade with little feedback. Even on assignments meant to boost your grade, she will grade those harshly too. But besides that, she is a good professor who cares for her students.
Not a good class, didn't feel that I learned anything. No structure in the syllabus, huge assignments due at the end of each 8 weeks. Would not take again.
