A very sweet woman but her teaching is a little unclear. Teaches straight from the book but the way she phrases her speech often sounds as if she contradicts it which makes understanding difficult and confusing. Welcomes questions but does not clarify well.
This lady is funny, she is always laughing at her own jokes! Her class starts off really easy but gets harder, so do the hw! She is VERY willing to help & schedules a ridiculous amount of office hours before tests to accomodate everyone. She is a little hard to understand at times, but I would rate her pretty high amoung other MATH 220 professors.
Ling is a very nice woman, and she tries very hard to help everyone do well. However, her accent sometimes makes her hard to understand, and she tends to speed through the material. The class starts out fairly easy but it gets HARD very quickly, so do the homework and keep going to class. If you're having trouble, use her office hours!
She gives miterm review sheets with everything on it, and the quizzes are the homework problems with different numbers. She follows straight from the book. Pretty easy- I'd recommend her.
If you must take stats, take her! Some teachers can make statistics so hard but she teaches it pretty slowly and simply. Yes, she can be hard to understand sometimes but she writes everything on the board... just take notes, do the homework, and you won't even have to read the book!
This lady is so sweet. She teaches the material very well, even though a little hard to understand at points, but she has no problem clarifying anything if you ask her. Bunch of quizzes and random hw, but not hard at all and she'll help you if you have any problems. TAKE HER- shes nice!
No attendance policy. I never went to class and didn't do as well as I should have. Learn from that, go to class. Chinese? A little hard to understand. The times I went to class it seemed like she was very explicit with everything. You have an annoying SPSS project.
Took attendance everyday but I have no clue if she would change a grade. Good teacher, accent can be difficuly at times. Quiz & test questions very similar to examples done in class.
Ling is the best! Take her for stats 220! 6Quizzes they are very simple, 25 points each, and she drops the lowest grade. I have an A in the class now and the midterm was not bad at all. If you pay attention in class you will be fine. I hardly even use the book, she explains things at an elementary level and it is incredibly easy to understand.
Ling is awesome! Her accent is hilarious, but she explains everything so clearly and moves very slowly...quizzes and tests aren't hard at all if you pay attention. probably one of the best stats teachers around...we love ling!
Nice lady, but hard to understand. She also never really explains the SPSS program well so it's easy to struggle with throughout the semester. Stats kinda sucks in general too.
I hate math but i LOVED Xu. You do have to study to do well on tests but she is more than willing to help out every step of the way. classes were extremely clear even to someone who isnt so skilled in math. She really wants her students to do well. alot of quizzes, some tests & 2 or 3 assignments which are easy. dont miss class or youll miss alot.
Attendance isn't mandatory but she'll bump up your grade at the end (if your on the boarder), if you came to class regularly. As far as stats prof's go she's the best, and is always willing to help. Can use an index card for tests. TAKE HER!!
I honestly don't know what you people are talking about. I'm normally very flexible with professors but not this one. You cant understand what she says, she flys through lessons on the board, and GOD FORBID you have a question during class. English is a struggle for her. Class set up isnt bad but she throws SPSS assignments on you quick, DONT TAKE!
She's funny in conversation w/ the class. She moved too slow at the beginning when the material was easy, but went way too fast at the end when it was hard. She holds extra office hours during finals & wants students to do well, she recognizes effort & hard work. Sometimes hard to understand but you get used to it. She's very smart, recommended.
Oh dear god this class was hard, however it was completely beneficial after you take it. I learned alot from Dr. Xu and she really cares about her students. Sometimes her accent gets a little thick but she's ALWAYS available for office hours. If you go to class, pay attention, and take really good notes, you'll be fine.
I love stat, but this class, and the way she taught it confused the hell out of me. Only teaches theories in class (which you could learn from the book), and rarely if ever, gives examples of problems. Nice, but when you go to her for help just restates what she said in class.
Yeah, this class was hard but she was a good teacher. Just make sure you go to every class cause if you miss a day it will be hard to catch back up. She is always available for office hours.
She is hilarious. I cannot make it through class without laughing at her accent. You never need the book because her notes on the board are very effective. Ling Linggg
Dr. Ling Xu can have her moments where she'll talk about her past, which is quite funny. Kinda hard to understand cause of her accent, but you'll get used to it. Always take notes on the board, which is great and effective. need book to do homework. 5 quizzes lowest one gets drop, 2 midterms, 2 projects, and final. recommend.
Ling is awesome. Her accents kind of hard to understand at first, but you get used to it and end up laughing along with her during class. I'm not good at math but I did well in her class. Your lowest quiz gets dropped, two projects that are easy, two midterms and a final. She's funny without trying and is always available for help. take her!!!
Her accent is tough to understand sometimes but it doesn't get in the way. She's very helpful and easy to talk to.
Amazing prof. Very clear as to what she expects from you. accent isn't really a problem because she writes everything on the board. tests/quizes are exactly like class examples. Explains not only how things work but also shows you HOW. Awesome teacher.
Its an easy class to begin with but she makes it really easy. She is hard to understand at first but you get used to it and it gets easy. She is somehwat unclear but if u want an easy A in stats take her. She is very nice and helpful if needed.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN! The whole class would be cracking up at least once every class because she said something ridiciulous. You'll get used to her accent really quickly. She makes MATH 220 seem easy although it's not. I got an A! Take Ling!
her accent is hard to deal with sometimes, but she is a fair teacher and when it comes to stat teachers at jmu, she's one of the best. She will always put up grades fast and give you back quizzes by the next class period. A or B is possible but you have to go to class to learn the material (especially if you've never taken stats before)
She is definitely one of the best stats teachers at JMU. Her lectures are clear and the examples and homework problems are exactly like those on the test so you know what to expect. I only worked the HW problems the night before the quiz and that was fine for me. I got a B only because the 2 midterms caught me a little off guard in difficulty.
Very easy. If you have already taken Stats, then this class is a joke. She'll help you if you go to her, and she'll look over your SPSS assignment before you turn it in for grading. The only problem is she screeches in her lectures which can be irritating. But if you're looking for an easy class, this is it.
Ling is awesome and she makes a difficult class manageable. Her quizzes and midterm can catch you off guard though if you didn't study.
I took Ling when I took stats the second time and she was amazing! Her accent is hard to understand, but you get used to it. She teaches very well, but her tests can sometimes trip you up. Definitely take her!
I had a really great experience with this professor. She is sweet and funny and really takes the time to explain things. While her quizzes and tests can be a little difficult, she does drop your lowest quiz grade. I definitely reccomend her for 220.
i never took stats before but got the highest grade in the class just by doing the homework and paying attention. quizes and tests are not bad at all if u just do the homework. definitely take her for an A. easy A if you are decent at math.
Dr. Xu is the nicest woman ever, she truly cares about how her students do. Her accent is fairly strong but she is very clear in what you need to know. She is also very helpful during office hours and i recommend utilizing those. Her quizzes and tests are not difficult but she does take points off for stupid things sometimes. good teacher!
Great Professor! Explains things very well! Helpful and very nice. Makes math easy! Accent is humorous too.
Ling Xu was definitely a good teacher to take stats with. Not the best, try to get colleen watson if you can, but xu is not a bad second option. Her lectures are easy to follow, and the tests and quizzes are all doable. take good notes, and take advantage of her notecard policy for tests. Definitely recommend.
She is so sweet! Class is hard but she explains really well and she is gladly to help during office hours. I would definitely recommend her!
Dr. Xu is a great teacher for stats! She is extremely helpful if you go to her office hours and is willing to help with anything you have questions on. She has an accent but you get used to it. She actually taught me stats by making sure I understood all of the homework and in class problems, take her!
I really enjoyed her as a teacher, attendance is important only because you do a lot of in class practice and class is where you take all the lecture notes. She started to post notes on canvas which was helpful, do the recommended homework it helps. Testsquizzes are very straight forward and not that difficult.
Xu has a thick accent and is hard to understand. You need to read the chapters in textbook to understand what she's talking about. 3-4 Quizzes, 2-3 tests, occasional webwork homework, only recommended homework (she doesn't check it). She's nice and sassy sometimes but it's definitely not easy. Sometimes puts notes chapter outlines online.
I like Dr. Xu. Her accent is thick at times but you get used to it. She gives 5 quizzes and drops the lowest one. Lets you have a cheat sheet on midterm and final. Tests and quizzes are very straight forward. Overall, I liked her class.
She is one of the best to take for 220. There are 5 quizzes (drops lowest) which are all very straight forward, 2 tests (which you can use a note card on), and a final. She tells you exactly what is on the quizzes and tests so there is no reason not to do well on them. She is also very willing to help in office hours.
She takes attendance and gets mad if you don't come. Start the homeworks early and don't wait until the last second to do them. Ask for help when you need it. GET Sas on your computer, just bug the media resources guy until he gives it to you so you can use it at home. You will learn the material so much better. Good professor for a boring class.
Two tests and a final, four homework assignments. Other than that really no outside work. Shes really nice and will give you the answer on assignments if you ask, but her lectures are basically copied from the book. Tests were very very difficult. Is nice with posting everything on Canvas though. Attendance not mandatory but go! You'll be lost
All the learning for this class is done by yourself. Her lectures do not make sense, so be prepared to try and learn yourself by reading through her notes. The best way to learn in this class is to wait until she posts the answers to in class practices, then see what you are supposed to do. 2 midterms and a final (one of the midterms was takehome)
Good luck understanding 60% of what comes out of her mouth. This class is like trying to learn a new language (programming) in a foreign language. Imagine listening to an Asian Siri talking for 50 minutes. She is awful at explaining things. If you ask her for help she directs you to class notes. If you read the book though you can do pretty well.
We are allowed to bring a a flash card to take the exams with us. There were no quizs. All I did was to study her notes and I got an A. I had no idea what to do for my project, so I went to the office hour and asked for her helps. She showed us literally what she wanted. As a result, my project ended up with a top score in the class. Take her!
Dr. Xu is pretty straight forward. There is a quiz every two chapters, two midterms, two projects, and a final. She lets you bring a note card for the exams but not the quizzes. If you come to class and do the recommended homework problems, the tests and quizzes are not too hard. She is also very willing to help if you go to her office.
I took her for Maymester, She is EXTREMELY FAIR. She lays out everything that she wants and what needs to be done to understand the material and do well. She lets you have a notecard for your tests and a full page of notes for the final exam. She hates spss so that is a plus because you barely do anything with it. And the 2 projects you do are easy
Office hours will never help you she doesn't seem to "care" when you show up. You can use a flashcard on both midterms and you have five quizzes and she will drop one. Overall if you are good at math you will be fine but if you like help this is not the teacher for you.
She is a terrible teacher. So hard to understand anything that she says, and she doesn't care when we don't understand the material. She is a very rude person when talking to her students in general and I would not recommend her. Her quizzes and tests aren't that hard if you are good at teaching yourself. Avoid her at all costs.
Dr. XU is VERY hard to understand, so if you are not already familiar with stats, DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR. Her office hours are useless because she doesn't understand English very well, so when you ask her questions privately she most likely won't even know what you're saying. You have to contact her multiple times to even get one email reply.
This was only an intro class for statistics, so it was very easy to begin with but Professor Xu explains it in an even more clear way. The tests and quizzes are exactly like the same examples used in lecture and textbook homework. Webwork is required only five times in the semester and textbook homework is optional. Go to class and ask questions.
She has great intentions was a teacher, however she is just too difficult to understand. She also didn't really prove to be much helpful. If you can't teach yourself the material, you might want to find a new professor.
Although she can be hard to understand, if you go to her office hours she can usually explain what you don't understand. She is a very FAIR teacher and gives you multiple opportunities to get a fantastic grade on the webwork and projects. There are a few test and 5 quizzes but drops the lowest quiz score. Overall, if you ask for help, you'll pass.
She does not check homework, but do it because those questions are almost identical to the tests. She is very clear with her expectations, so do the assignments before class, take notes and you have basically already taken the exam. Can't ask much more from a professor. Do your part and you will get a good grade and will actually learn something.
Worst teacher I've ever taken at JMU. Can't understand what she says and she talks so fast. She laughs at herself a lot as well. If you go to office hours it doesn't even help because you cannot understand a word she says. Would not recommend her. You have to learn everything on your own.
Ling Xu is definitely one of the fairest 220 teachers out there. She gives you lots of chances to earn easy points and does her best to explain what she is teaching. She is hard to understand at times and that can be a struggle if you can't get used to a thick accent. Not easy but if you put in the work and go see her, you will do alright.
Her class was so incredibly boring. She is not the best teacher and her accent is hard to understand. Her teaching style is very old fashioned and its all lecture. The quizzes are reasonable but the midterms were too long and are hard to finish in the class period. The class started off easy but got harder towards the end and screwed me over.
MATH 220 is a pretty easy class. Xu is great at explaining the material, you just have to get used to her accent. One negative I have is that she usually didn't understand what students were asking when they didn't understand something. Still glad I took her, good professor
You can totally understand her, you just have to get used to her accent. She def is one of the better teachers out of the stat teachers shes very fair. Two projects and 5 quizzes the lowest one gets dropped. The quizzes are easy just know the material.
I have Dr. Xu for Math 220 right now, never pay attention in class and am just fine. She has an accent and goes kind of fast so it feels overwhelming at first but when you review it everything makes sense. Index Card on MIdterms (2) , there are 4 quizzes and then the final. I've barely used the textbook but the rec. homework problems were easy
Her accent is tough to understand if you have no prior stats knowledge. Quizzes were fairly easy; lowest one gets dropped. The 2 projects were super easy. Sometimes have difficulty explaining things. Flashcard front/back for 2 midterms and a whole sheet of paper front/back for final. DO THE RECOMMENDED HOMEWORK IT'S HELP EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT GRADED
She cannot understand student questions and tests/quizes are harder than you think. Not very understanding, and will probably make you feel stupid if you have a question/comment.
Xu is a nice professor and is more than willing to explain things more than once if you ask. She is very transparent with her grading and will tell you how she wants it. She makes the class very clear and concise. During her office hours, she is friendly and will slow things down for you. She may have an accent, you should be able to succeed!
If you need to take stats 220 definitely take her! she is so funny and she really wants everyone succeed. If you go to class, do the homework and listen to the lectures all well as prepare just by going over your notes and handouts you can do well (A-B range)! Definitely recommend her over the other stats teachers!
Really wonderful person. Wants you to succeed and do well! Class overall was easy, two midterms and final where you get to have a notecard/sheet of paper to put formulas on. First week of class her accent was a little hard to understand but after a while it gets easier. Willing to help in any way possible and does a good job at explaining things
Take her. Her accent is fine. She wants you to do well. Drops your worst quiz, lets you have cheat sheets on tests. Very nice will help you whenever and even offers to call you to wake you up for the final.
Take Dr. Xu for 220! Her accent is understandable and she does really care about how you're doing. The lowest quiz grade is dropped and the tests aren't too bad. She also doesn't make you buy the book and homework is not mandatory.
She is a really really nice lady but makes everything more complicated than it needs to be. Stats is a pretty easy class so it's easy to teach yourself it but no one knows what shes talking about in class and when you ask her a question you won't get an answer, if you're bad at math I'd take someone else.
Pretty easy A, you just have to study a few hours for the 3 tests and 4 quizzes. You can use a calculator on everything and she allows a note card for each test. 2 easy projects. Really nice but explains concepts poorly, making them seem harder than they are.
If you've never taken statistics before this class may be tough, but Dr. Xu tries to work with students by dropping a quiz and giving cheat sheets. Test questions can be tough because you have to not only solve the problems but also interpret everything. Doable but don't slack off. Go to office hours and she'll give extra practice problems.
Dr. Xu is really good at explaining things and goes at a good pace, and her accent is easy to understand. She's a picky grader so its hard to get As sometimes but not impossible. She lets you have cheat sheets and drops a quiz and gives good outlines before tests/quizzes. Important to go to class or you will get behind. Overall good choice.
Dr. Xu is a very nice knowledgable lady. Any comments on here that mention her accent should be disregarded, she is very easy to understand, and wants her students to do well in her class. Some of the homework instructions were unclear, but that is my only complaint.
Nice lady but you can not understand her at all. Also very nasty if you have a question and thinks she is always right. She takes off points for the smallest most meaningless things on tests and quizzes. I got points taken off for my numbers being slanted.
Take notes. Don't memorize the material, understand the material. Don't leave class until you understand it. She teaches a watered-down version of statistics that is the basic version of what you need to know. She doesn't test anything outside of that. If you pay attention, take notes, make good cheat-sheets for test.. then you will easily pass
I don't usually rate professors poorly, but I think she is just a 1 star prof. I don't have too much to say, but it's a really poor experience if you need to take the class online.
She's a decent professor but very difficult to learn from if math is your weak point. She talks too quickly, and her accent is somewhat thick if you struggle to keep up. She doesn't answer questions directly and beats around the bush to give you the most simplistic answer. I wouldn't recommend her course online and don't give extra credit.
She is a kind woman who is really smart, however she's not the best teacher. She has a thick accent and doesn't always use the best grammar so her explanations aren't easily understood. If you have stats background from high school, you'll be fine in the class. If you aren't confident in your math skills I would look for someone else.
Dr. Xu doesnt provide any extra practice problems, only reads straight from the slides the entire class, and doesnt explain the material well. In class I barely learned any of the concepts even though I took notes the entire time. Quizzes and tests are very hard and it was hard to prepare because they were very different then the homework.
For this SAS programming class, I found that many of the mandatory lectures were exhausting from her often just reading off of the provided chapter notes. The class is mainly based on the notes Xu creates, but they aren't organized well and are extremely extensive so it's difficult to find the material you need.
Class is kinda slow because she reads straight from powerpoint slides but she makes everything pretty simple to understand so thats great. Very reasonable woman and way better than my past math professors. Once hw a week and you have 4 days to do it. Not bad at all
Very good class but final was very hard. It's ok, I took AP Statistics in high school. Yeehaw.
Loved Dr. Xu, she gave detailed examples in class which really helped me understand what we were doing and thoroughly explained the lectures and problems. We can bring in flashcards for midterms and the final. Her accent wasn't difficult to understand at all. Definitely recommend taking her!
She goes really fast and if you aren't already familiar with stats that can make this class pretty difficult.
Ok person, but absolutely did not like her as a professor. If you struggle with accents, dont pick her. 2 midterms and a final, usually one homework assigned at the end of week, due by the next class, 2 group SPSS projects, and 3 quizzes (drops lowest). Reads off her slides, not much explanation. Midterms were brutal, HWs do little to pad ur grade.
Really hard class. I took this class with another professor last year and I passed but not high enough for my major. This year I am doing even worse with this Professor. I was really confused when she tried to explain things and her tests compared to last year are very very hard. The final was extremely hard. Saw a girl crying one day
Quite literally the worst prof/teacher I've had throughout college and high school. Her classes consist of reading from the powerpoint and I learned better from the guided homework than from her. She did not give any extra credit and refused to curve anything (even when the whole class did horribly). Also, really just rubbed me the wrong way.
Doesn't speak english very well. Doesn't curve tests, even though the average was a failing grade. Reads directly off of the slides, but you can't understand her. More beneficial to just read the slides at home after class.
Professor Xu tries her best to teach a course that's supposed to be an intro-level stat course, but the majority of class consists of her reading off of her slides and moving fast without a whole lot of explanation. Her mid term wasn't curved at all when the average score was barely above a 70. You'd be better off teaching the material to yourself.
Have one homework assignment weekly that she still accepts late. Few quizzes which are taken online. 2 midterms and one final. allows index card for test. honestly, I would recommend this professor for 220.
Awful, awful, awful. Do not recommend to a single soul. She told me I did a good job on my midterm when I came to her upset about how I got a 60%. Everybody fails every single quiz and test yet she refuses to ever add a curve. She does not care if you fail the class whatsoever. Many people drop class halfway through because of their failing grade.
Statistics is hard for a lot of people, and I think Dr. Xu made things a lot easier to understand. As someone who had a basic understanding of stats, I was able to miss class about once a week and pass with a B, but going to class and paying attention is definitely extremely helpful. All of her course material is stuff she made FYI, but shes caring
Honestly, this class is hard in itself, but Professor Xu did her best. Compared to the other teachers she is for sure your best bet. I learned through the Aleks homeworks and repeatedly going back and redoing them. Go to class because it counts and you will be fine and do well on the quizzes. If you do badly then you didn't put in effort.
If I could give professor Xu zero stars I would. Do not take her. Even if you have to push math back a semester its worth it. I have never been bad at math but professor Xu was the worst and it is impossible to hear her. She has a heavy accent and tries her best but its too much for a hard class
Came on here bc the reviews were so bad I had to stand up for Dr. Xu. No math class she teaches is easy because it is math! not her fault. Go to office hours, she loves and WANTS students in hours, she is super helpful and caring. She is very smart and knowledgeable in her field, and she is funny when you get to know her. Study with the textbook.
The reviews for her were so bad, I was so afraid of this class but I really like her. She's been teaching this class for a long time, so she know's what she's doing. She really wants you to succeed and she's making me not hate math. Give her a chance, I think she's really good.
One of the better professors I've had. She always has time to help out, answers any questions, only downside can be that sometimes she moves fast and her accent can make it hard to understand. If that isn't an issue for you then she is overall great. Classwork isn't hard if you follow along with the lessons and do the weekly homeworks.
Dr. Xu is a happy & stylish woman who is passionate about teaching statistics. She's great if you are taking statistics for the first time and her accent is not difficult to understand. The course definitely gets more difficult throughout the semester. Be sure to use your resources like the ALEKS practice, the textbook, and go to the PASS sessions!
In all, she wasn't awful; she was just hard to understand sometimes. Moves really fast on material, so if you don't get it, you kinda have to figure it out at home. Tests were sometimes a tad difficult, but that's what you get when taking a math class. Gives you direct instructions on group projects but gives you little time for them.
Professor Xu tries hard, but the material can be challenging. Aleks homework and study sessions help a lot. Definitely attend class, as participation counts. For extra prep, unstuck AI and ChatGPT were useful study tools. Overall, manageable with effort.
I feel bad. Such a sweet woman, tries her best to speak clearly, and is passionate when she teaches. If you are good at math take her. If you aren't I would take someone else so you can understand the lectures. I was able to myself a lot but when I was confused it was hard because I couldn't understand everything she says.
Professor Xu is wonderful, everything on exams, quizzes, and homework, she goes over in lecture. She gives you a heads up for due dates far in advance and gives you many days and attempts for homework's and quizzes. She is also very sweet, and very willing to help you succeed. She does move through topics very quickly but she is very passionate.
Cannot recommend Prof. Xu enough, everything from the lectures is on canvas. She is very passionate about her class and has a sense of humor. She's the best!
Nice lady, helpful when you go to office hours, but can be difficult if math isn't your thing. Aleks really helps with practice, and exams are tough but she (sometimes) allows a notecard cheat sheet! I recommend her but at home studying is necessary to pass.
Really nice and awesome teacher. She goes over all the material in depth and shows she cares about her students and how they're progressing. Gotta go to class and do the work, but the negative parts were bad because of the course material, not Dr. Xu. Definitely recommend.
she honestly wasnt bad, sometimes i wouldnt understand her and the way she taught was fast and unorgaized, but the homeworks and quizzez are all online on ALEKS which was easy, if you know what i mean. the exams were in person on paper but she uses big dividers which helps with you know what since she doesnt walk around. we get cheat sheets anyways
She is a very sweet lady and the class isn't that bad if you pay attention and take notes. There are 2 exams, 4 quizzes on ALEKS, and a final. She drops the lowest quiz. She allows a notecard of notes for each exam and a whole piece of paper for the final. There are 2 group projects but they are easy if you follow the directions.
Prof Xu was honestly a great teacher, she does have an accent, but I could understand her fine. She explains well and with a lot of examples, which was great for me. She is a little unorganized but it dosent really affect you as a student but all her quizzes are open note and take home and you are allowed cheat sheets on exams so I defo recommend!
This course seemed like it was mostly just reading off the slides, and while she is a very kind professor the course just wasn't great and it felt very bland
Dr. Xu is very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed her and her class. MATH220 is just very hard; she mainly reads off of slides, but she does go through examples. Allows a notecard for exams and quizzes + homework are online. A tough class that you will need to put effort into outside of class for but Dr. Xu is very caring and understanding.
