I thought she was a great teacher. She was very hard, but she was fair. She was very flexible with me, and helped me when I needed it. She explained exactly what she wanted and even gave examples of what it was she wanted.

Lisa is the most personable teacher I know. She's caring, intelligent, helpful, and always happy. Don't expect an easy A or to slack off, because this class takes a lot your time! She is the MOST sympathetic teacher ever, but don't mistake that with forgiving. No slacking off in this class - I'M SERIOUS. I took her class Credit/No Credit, and got A's on four out of the five essays that comprise the class - she still made me do the LAST essay. Takes a lot of time but you learn.

I recommand you take Prof. Alvarez for Writing 201 and 1. I love Lisa. She's so helpful and she was always there for me when i needed help whether it was via email or during her office hours. i couldn't have asked for a better professor for my first year in college.

It’s not an easy class; you have to work for your grade. She’s a very helpful professor who wants you to do well. Your essays won’t be due all at once, you’ll work your way up to the final draft. Just keep up with her class work/hw and you’ll do fine.

An easy class for someone who has a pretty good grasp of the subject. I'm not at all a fan of the novel she uses as a prompt for one of the assignments. However, she makes herself very available for conferences during office hours and after class to discuss how you can get your paper to an "A", or at least the next grade up.

I took her for a semester during high school, and it was a great experience. you did have to do your work, but it wasnt that stressful. And she is great to talk to. She is very understanding and tries to work with you, just put in your effort as well.

Lisa is such a great professor. It's clear that she loves what she does, and she can really relate to students. Extremely approachable and always willing to help. Put an effort into your work and you'll be fine. We only ended up writing 4 essays, which is nothing compared to other classes. But you still get a lot out of it.

Some students couldn't cut but I liked that she never gave up on us, even we when had. She just kept at it. In the end, I did better than I expected.

I cannot stress it enough: Ms. Alvarez is an incredible, inspiring professor. I have taken one of her classes each semester since I've started at IVC. She is someone I've confided in as well as an incredible teacher. Take her class if you want a college course to change your life and, at the least, improve your writing skills.

She is the most helpful teacher. Ask for help and she'll give you all the help you need! First essay is hard but after you get the hang of her style it gets much easier. She gives you many writing excercises but they help you during your writing process. Take her for sure!

Great Teacher! Love her! makes class fun. i had no interested in Mexican-American (Chicano) Literature, but not LOVE IT! she's easy to talk to, extremely helpful, approachable, and so many more things. I'd recommend taking her for any class, writing or literature. She grade's fair & if you need help, she will give as much time as possible to do so.

I took her Lit 46 class: Intercultural Lit w/emphasis on Mexican Lit. She really knows her stuff & has a lot of experience, also really lenient & easy going but she will get angry if you don't read the texts & come prepared to class. Do the readings, journal entries, 2 essays, participate and you'll get at least a B. Recommend Her!

She truly is an amazing professor. Lectures are fun and interesting. Her personality is quirky, sincere and polite. However, the work load is pretty hectic. Gives alot of worksheets that need to be answered in paragraphs in class plus assigned readings and more written assignments for homework. Don't take too many units before taking her class.

Great, friendly English teacher, highly recommended. Classes are always engaging and she keeps the topics interesting. She enjoys teaching her classes and wants her students to do well because her class is indeed challenging. But that's okay, she is always willing to help you. You also learn a lot about yourself in her WR 1 class.

So much to say about Alvarez, but just want to keep things simple. She is one of my favorite teachers, helped me improve in my writing and research. Strives to help students strive and has an attitude that generates a "hey, this class is pretty enjoyable" feeling. Definitely recommend her, would take her again in WR 2, but she doesn't teach WR 2 :(

Alvarez is a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory, but you are allowed to skip up to 3-4 classes before she will drop you. There are no in-class essays, tests, or quizzes, just four big essays, BUT there is homework almost every day. She does not grade easy, but she replies to all of her e-mails and will help you as much as possible.

BEST WRITING TEACHER. Everyday you come in with a paragraph of your essay written and she helps you through what you need to correct. Professor Alvarez was great. Yes, she does give a lot of work out but in the end it is extremely helpful. All the handouts she give out during class make it easier for one to write their papers. I learned many new writing techniques and would highly recommend her! The work is completely worth it!

Very nice and helpful. She's mad if students don't show up to class sometimes. But if they email her, she'll be fine with it. Office hours is very helpful, too. She pushes students to do more good works. Couple first essays are graded easy, but grading gets harder, which goes along with your progress. Tip: take pass no pass and have fun in class.

I have taken this professor 3 times. 201, LIT 31 and WR 11. She is amazing and extremely helpful and there to help you learn and excel. Anyone taking 201 do take her she's amazing! English majors absolutely take her classes. She gives a lot of hand outs and readings, but they aren't terribly daunting. Her required texts aren't expensive either!

Prof Alvarez is one of the nicest, most caring ladies I know. She's a wonderful professor. Even if someone hates writing they'll probably like her because she's so nice. Really makes the class a pleasure. She cares about her students and is super smart as well. Taken her for two classes and would take again. I recommend to everyone.

Professor Alvarez is a very unique person, and probably the kindest teacher at IVC. Don't take advantage of this fact. She works really hard and gives tons of feedback on your writing. She remembers your characters, your plot, the things you have trouble with, and more. Plus, she's fun! The class was very easy -- just show up and do your bit.

She likes to have discussions during class that helps you brainstorm your essay topics. These discussions help because you can get feedback from her along with your peers. Semester contains 4 essays and an in-class writing final. She will help you with your essays if you ask her, because she genuinely cares about every one of her students.

Was the first time she was teaching WR 10 (Intro to Creative Writing); the syllabus wasn't solidified and due dates often changed. But Professor was always lenient with turning in assignments, I missed a couple and still got an A. If you put effort into writing short stories/poetry she will be able to tell and you will get great feedback.

Honestly, she's a fantastic writing teacher and I learned more from this class than 4 years of high school English. Every essay we wrote went through multiple drafts that she and other classmates reviewed. If you take all the feedback to heart on your essays and do all the smaller assignments, you will pass.

This teacher is amazing! While I didn't always like doing reading journals, I enjoyed the class a lot and it made me appreciate short stories. She always some interesting stories to tell. She also encourages her students to write more too! Even if you aren't an English major, TAKE THIS CLASS! YOU WILL ENJOY IT!

She is honestly pretty awesome, accepts late work as long as you don't make it consistant. At first it seemed like a lot of homework but it gets easier and you get used to the workload if you do all the homework you'll get a good grade. She gives weeks to complete an essay with tons of in-class work to prepare for it and feedback. She's great!

I took her Intro to Creative Writing class. She was a great teacher, very lenient with deadlines, and gave great feedback on every assignment that was turned in. Like all English/writing classes, there is some participation encouraged with peers for feedback. She also rounded up my 87% to a 90 so I could get that A.

Prof. Alvarez was amazing!! There's definitely a lot of reading/writing--weekly exercises and reflections in the first half, and 2-4 workshop critiques a week in the second half (25-30k words total)--but grades are based on participation and effort. The environment was really supportive; I was comfortable sharing my writing and got great feedback.
