Good prof, not the most interesting course.
AWFUL!!!! Don't take the course if she is your prof!!! So much extra work that is NOT necessay!
yawn... and have you ever heard anyone say the word "certainly" so many times during a lecture? ... hard to follow her lectures sometimes b/c of all the distracting filler words she uses to try to boost up the lecture. Good thing the tests are fairly straight forward.
be careful, the good thing is that u don't need to attend her classes at all and you will get better mark
Average prof. The 'certainly' thing got really annoying about half way through the course. More movies than most classes, the course is actually helpful if you're interested in families. The first test was brutal, second was easy. Not very helpful, especially before class starts. She makes it clear she doesn't "have time" for you.
Bad prof. Really didn't take time for her students, or didn't vocalize what was expected of them. Lectures were not clear. Does she even know what she is talking about???
I have to agree she did say certainly alot...but big deal! If you need a w requirement this is an easy way to get it. Class in not that hard. Material pretty straight forward.
boring, hard exams, with strict marker, it was really a chore to go to class. not helpful at all, i really disliked her as a prof. she did not have any time for her students whatsoever. BAD!!
Reads only from notes. Can not ask her a questions - if it's not in her notes and if she already did not directly answer it. She will not have the answer...Repeats herself.
Takes forever to get back marks; only replies to students she feels like; class was ok but she doesn't answer your questions.
poor prof forever! hard exams. and how can she be a prof??
Its hard to stay awake in her class, however found it easy to get a good grade. She repeats herself alot!
she reads directly from the slides and cannot answer any questions asked. if there is no attendance do not go to class, it is useless. her tests are also pretty difficult considering her lectures remind me of a grade 3 classroom....
I dont think she should be a prof... she is brutal, boring as heck, disorganized, unable to answer questions, and ignores questions if she does not want to answer them. Just because she is willing to teach, does not mean she should!
Try and avoid classes with her if possible. She goes only on her notes she brings to class with her, and seems unable to answer any questions by students. She is unorganized and barely knows what she is talking about! I have never heard someone take so many pauses in lecture before. If you want to really learn something, do not take her classes!
Lisa Bednar is a horrible prof. She stutters over her words at times, and she goes througShe h the material way too slow. She is rude to the students, and if she doesn't like you she writes questions about you on her tests. I did not like this teacher at all and so did a bunch of my fellow peers.
By far the worst teacher i have ever had, she has no idea what she is talking about and is the worst marker ever! if you have an opinion about something in her class make sure it is the same as hers or else you will get a bad mark! also she has not grading scale at all, and she cant explain herself at all! by far worst teacher ever!!!!!
I didn't appreciate her bringing her feminist views into the classroom. If you ask her a question, she'll give you as vague of an answer as possible. I eventually stopped asking questions because her answers left me more distraught and confused than I already was. Also the grader markers are unfair and biased.
This woman is not at all helpful. She will assign something, then when you do it exactly as she asked, she refuses to look at it, because he T/A does everything for her. She is VERY biased. She uses STRANGE confusing conglomeration of articles that in no way relate to the subject. Her exams are completely scattered. She is RUDE and unhelpful.
treats her students like they are in high school.she picks very difficult articles that are hard to understand. thinks that you will drop everything and just focus on her class. RUDE. 1st year credit... YEAH right...
Horrible prof and doesn't know anything. She is so strict, marks unfairly and I recommend that no one takes any classes with her!!!
She's great. If you keep an open mind and follow class expectations you will do fine. She's very helpful and understanding if you go to her for help.
This course with her was very easy. I rarely attended class and got a B in the course. She does not seem interested in the material she teaches. Also, talked to the class as if we were idiots.
Avoid Lisa Bednar's class by any means possible. I learned nothing in the class, her instructions are contradictory and confusing, she does not get back to you when you ask questions, her assignments are useless, and she seems very uneducated.
Due dates were unorganized but I felt that she marked fairly and was clear with what she expected - especially in papers which was nice. Didn't always hand assignments bak quickly but always gave feedback.
Ms. Bednar is an amazing professor. She is quite shy initially but once she gets passed it she really opens up. She is a genuinely nice person and truly enjoys teaching women's and gender studies. Her class outline was followed exactly and we knew when every assignment was due with plenty of time to prepare. I loved her and her class.
The class is very interesting but the essays are marked quite hard. Lisa's office hours weren't the best and it was difficult to make an appointment. This course is definitely not a GPA booster.
Absolutely do NOT take WGS online with her. She marks papers far beyond an intro course level and incorporates the most needlessly time-consuming bs group discussions.
Challenging online course but Prof was easy to reach for help. Gave feedback on papers before I had to hand in, very helpful! Pushed for critical thinking.
Lisa is a wonderful prof. She seemed genuinely passionate about women's and gender studies. Content of the course is fascinating and made essays extremely easy to write. 3 short essays, class participation, a library assignment and a final test. This course was a GPA booster for me.
Took her class online. LOTS of reading, since there were no online lectures. had to participate in 3 graded group discussions (waste of time, but guaranteed free 15% of your final mark if you participate). papers had good feedback, and she answered questions very clearly. for the final exam she gave us all the questions that would be on the exam!
Oh Lisa. What to say about her. Lisa is a very unique woman. She is what I like to call a "Lifetime Student." She is always learning and taking more classes. I believe she has like, three degrees. Super sweet lady and super helpful.
Took her class in the summer and I could say this saved my GPA. I got an A but in order to ace the class, you need to have to do lots and lots of reading. I suggest to read everyday so you won't fall behind. Also, if you don't understand anything or want to have tips for your paper, then don't hesitate to contact her. She's really approachable!
avoid any class with her. Unreasonable grader. Not very easy to contact considering I'm taking her online class, which she's not very involved with either. I was excited for this class but I would say she ruined it for me. if you do take a class with her, you better read a your book since that how you will learn from her class.
For an online class, she really takes her time to respond. Nothing was really clear, including dates for assignments. She is one of the slowest professors I have ever had. She's incredibly dull and unclear. If you have to take this course, try it with a different professor.
Unreasonable grader for a first year course. Next to impossible to get in touch with her, doesn't respond to emails and has office hours only 4 days a semester. Also DO NOT take her online course, there's an unmanageable amount of reading; my friends who took on-campus version barely had to read anything. Exam was very easy though.
Really nice prof but isn't clear on deadlines and such. Papers are easy as long as you know what you're talking about and do the required readings. Leaves nice comments and grades easily. Final was super easy and took less than an hour to finish. Great class!
She assigns so many things to read that it makes you feel like this is the only class you're taking. It's hard to focus on other classes when I have so many unfinished readings for this one, I felt like I was losing my mind. Content was good but I wish she didn't assign so many readings.
Took the online course with her, she is very unclear about due dates, and makes us do "group work" where only one person does the paper, then she cancels the paper one day before it's due. Class is easy overall, but she makes it bad.
don't take this class as a GPA booster. She gives good feedback on the papers but still marks way too hard for a first year course even using her feedback. I tried reaching out to her about my paper and how i could improve it but she took too long to reply so i ended up handing another C+ paper, not reliable.
I'd like to start off by saying that she's nice and gives good feedback on papers. The main problem with her is that she takes a while to reply to emails and only has office hours once a month which is odd for me because this is a distance ed class. She gives a lot of assignments but instructions and grading is very confusing and unclear. AVOID!
She assigns way too many readings every week. Takes a week to respond to emails. Unclear instructions.
Not helpful at all. When I ask a question she just tells me to look at the course material. Textbook too expensive and too much reading.
I took this course as a GPA booster and for a first year course she marks ridiculously hard, assignments dates were never clear, sometimes she would post an assignment 3 days before it was due, as if we do not have any other courses to worry about. Terrible at replying to emails and marking assignments in a timely manner.
Fairly easy class. Very minimal writing for a course thats considered a W (3 papers 1500 words each if i remember correctly). 3 group discussions, easy 15%. She will give you the exact questions that will be on the final. She assigns tons of readings but you really only need to read the ones required to write the papers. Easy A
This is an extremely easy class. She gives you the exact answers for the final and basically any assignment gets 100% just for handing it in. However, there's two large papers both due within a week of each other and that really isn't fair. But overall she helps a lot with your understanding and explains absolutely everything multiple times.
Lisa Bednar is a caring and educated professor but very hard to get ahold of through email and only has one or two hours each month for office hours. She's a tough grader but you will learn a lot and she's passionate about the subject matter.
Terrible. This is a first-year course but she marks harder than many 3rd year or honors classes. 0/10 do not take classes with her.
BEWARE... she marks without reading the full content of your paper. Docks marks left and right.
She might be educated and caring prof but not good for an online course as she replies to emails after 2-3 weeks. She is also a very very tough grader - obviously, it's not her, I guess students from final years of arts examines BUT she can at least recheck. its an elective for 1st year for most of us and been graded like final year of Ph.D.
Her AN Paper grader is very strict. My advice to anyone taking her written English course is to seek help from U of M Writing Tutor.
A little rough for the first paper, but gets better once you know what's up. Make use of office hours to know exactly what the AN's are being marked on, especially if you are unfamiliar with APA format. Loads of reading and a few online discussion posts that will be posted without warning. Markers are not too tough and provide helpful feedback.
She is awful
Such a fascinating and meaningful concept that was completely butchered by Lisa's heavy demands. You're expected to read a minimum of 2 textbook chapters (60 pages each), articles, films etc EACH week. Impossible to keep up, argument notes and group discussion are always due at the same time. Doesn't even read our work, docks marks for no reason.
I was honestly dreading Prof Bednar's online course based on most of these reviews but I was pleasantly surprised! I thoroughly enjoyed her teaching style. The amount of reading is really only demanding in the first few units. She gave great feedback. You must follow instructions for papers though, don't ignore them as they're there for a reason!
I'm an A+ student and received a bare B with this prof. Grading is solely on opinion for papers. My test grades were 90+, but papers rec'd 60-70 (other classes I average 85-90). Class material is great - Prof is awful. Would not recommend to anyone.
This professor takes forever to respond to any emails. For paperwork, I don't think she even read it. She gave the exact same marks to me on every assignment. The same for many other students. Very tough grader. I do not recommend it.
This course is extremely demanding. Only ever gave one lecture the rest was all assigned readings. Anywhere from 60-150 pages of reading a week. Her AN paper directions are very clear however she always gives the same grade and very little feedback. Her feedback included "wonderful work, wouldn't change anything" received 75% on paper.
I took this class for an easy A written requirement. Though there is a lot of reading assigned, you don't really have to do it. There are three papers, which you get to chose the topics out of 5 options. The group discussions are an easy 100%. There are two tests, but if you get a couple people together to do the study guide you will be fine.
Marks incredibly hard
Definitely an easy A class. You honestly don't need to read any of the assigned readings, just read them if they're specified within the test guides or for argument notes. There are three papers, and she is a tough grader but gives you the opportunity to improve through feedback. The two tests were straightforward. Group discussions are easy 100s.
Tough grader, wont give you any feedback for any assignments and if she does its automatically passed on to someone else she think will help instead of giving you the proper feedback a student should receive, hard to get ahold of regardless of the time day so good luck trying to get questions asked
Had required reading written by a transphobic author. Did not like any effort to include transgender and nonbinary people in feminist discussions in written work. Graded harshly unless her exact views were regurgitated and/or defended. Save yourself a headache and take the class with someone else.
My first written course. Had class with her, kind of rude with responses but responds in time. Tough grader. Wouldn't recommend her if you want to do well. My grade was literally a decimals away from being a B+ but she refused to change it. Marks a bit harshly on papers I think. Nice person however
shes a really good prof, very understanding to life's emergencies. A common complaint is that she doesnt give feedback which is situational, if you gave a developed idea on which she could give feedback you'll get it, if you wrote something where the best you could get was "ideas need more development" obviously you wont get much
had good readings from many minority writers, was very quick to reply to emails. assignments were very easy only needing to spend a couple hours on them. liked to get many different opinions.
This was one of the rudest professors I have ever encountered. She was also hard to reach, did not explain things well and expected us to just read with no lectures for explanation. I did not like her at all. I ended up dropping the class and will retake it in the future
Heavily relied on a few papers and discussion posts. DP were easy as long as you follow the guidelines. Needed a few texts but only would read a chapter or two from each. Relied on notes that were given out in the course material and one textbook. GPA boost if you read the normal amount of course work.
Readings were interesting, no exam, however much of our grade came from three writing assignments which had very vague requirements. Grading was not consistent. I received a B- on a paper and Lisa Bednar changed it to an A+ when i asked for further feedback. Very nice of her! The TAs/graders are the problem, there is no consistent grading scheme.
Don't take this class as an elective, it won't boost your grade. You'll work so hard on the papers and be lucky to get a B. Best thing to do is meet with Bednar via office hours, she is helpful and kind in person but detached in general as an instructor, and written instructions for the papers are cryptic.
Very tough grader, with an extensive reading heavy course. Do not take this class as an elective.
Honestly a great class if you want to learn about the financial world. She was a very fair professor as well and I enjoyed her way of teaching.
This prof is hands down difficult to deal with. She is tenured, so any claim you make to the university is constantly ignored. She's consistently is disrespectful to students with an international background and is close-minded to any issues that are presented toward her in a ethnic family for projects. Run if you can.
Awful prof... I didn't wanna get discouraged by all the bad reviews so I decided to give her a chance. Waited for an email reply for 2 weeks. Tests are timed 1 min/question and she tests you on random stats & details that are not meaningful. Grading is also odd. She seems lazy and like she enjoys giving out bad grades with 0 feedback.
I absolutely loved WOMN1600 with instructor Bednar. I took this course as a W elective and found it to be an easy A, but if you are looking for an easy A and have no prior understanding of feminist theory, you may find yourself struggling. If you chose to take this course, get ready to read and try not to fall behind.
Professor Bednar is a good professor, however; I see not everyone agrees. She is a tough grader but fair. My only criticism is the feedback for assignments is pretty vague.
Prof. Bednar provides free textbook and easy exams (she posted exam-specific study guides), a big plus. However, the course feels scattered. Assignments lacked clear instructions, and feedback was vague. It was challenging to locate all course materials, making navigation tough. Recommended as a GPA booster.
Lisa is probably one of the worst professors at University of Manitoba. Her lectures are sloppy, her homework is overkill and unnecessary. Her grading is brutal considering this is a first year course. She does not care about her students. If you need a written course, I suggest any other professor.
I took this course for an easy A and boy was I humbled. Tests are very specific to reading material--we're talking being able to quote randomly from text. Essays can be submitted early for vague feedback but I'd be surprised if you end up with higher than 65% on those. Average for the course is C - C+ !
Lisa is amazing!!! If you email her, she is very helpful, caring and kind. There were 2 assignments, 3 tests and discussion posts. All was very straightforward if you just read the textbook (it was free) and other free materials. She also gives study guides and only tests on a small amount of readings. She wants you to succeed. 10/10 recommend!!!!
Honestly her online class is just so much reading, chapter after chapter and it gets really boring and unengaging fast, I was hoping when I signed up that she would do lecture videos but I guess not. Also her test material is for whole chapters at a time, I think she should give us some learning objective so we know what to study for more specific.
Not bad overall! There were 2 tests, 2 papers, and 3 discussion posts so the workload was manageable. Her tests were online but were pretty tricky as they were very specific to details in the readings. Not many did well on the papers and got graded harshly, so I recommend only taking the course with her if you feel you're a strong writer already.
this prof has made me reconsider life many times.
if you value your sanity don't take this prof. i wouldn't wish this women to teach to my worst enemies. my hatred for her burns as hot as 1000 suns and even the devil himself would pity this level of torment. Her responses to emails are giant nothing burgers. There are no slides and most of the readings are pointless.
I took Intro to Women Studies with Lisa and I don't understand all the slander on here, she was such a sweetheart!!! Her grading was often done by TAs so I went straight to her after seeing a grade I wasn't happy with and she gave me an A+! She was so welcoming and kind- quit hating on her and be better student lol
Lisa Bednar is a bit of a joke, only suggest course for mortal enemies. Markers provided little feedback + humongous marks lost over who knows what. Is impossible to get ahold of + did not answer email questions about feedback and getting in touch over grade disputes. Course content is very gentle, with minimal knowledge of financial literacy.
She provides easy-to-read textbooks, clearly points out which sections are important for the tests, and the papers you have to write are honestly very simple to follow once you get into the groove of it. The information is genuinely useful for real life.
Her syllabus is well-organized and easy to read. Expect some reading, but assessments are quite generous. Also Professor Bednar is very understanding in her make-up policy.
Gave minimal to no feedback on assignments, yet gave marks as if the assignment had issues. Did not justify grades for assignments/papers or show a grading rubric. Expectations were sort of unclear.
Dont take this professor. She is a tough grader and the workload is extremely heavy. There's a lot of reading from multiple sources, plus strict and confusing grading. The class felt overwhelming . the reading was assigned, was extremely heavy, two textbook, and online articles. I wouldn't recommend taking any class with her.
Holy hate her with a passion. Graded like I slimed her husband and gave no feedback. I think she has some screws loose as she would say "great essay" and would hit me with a 60%. Happened to everyone I know. Made an easy gpa boosting elective my worst grade! If you see Lisa Bednar teaching a class, DONT TAKE IT! You'll thank me later!
