GREAT!!!!! Hard work, but tons of learning! Awesome environment to learn!!!
Great teacher, fun. You must put in good effort though. Very valuable class.
Excellent teacher! She pushes you hard but you will learn a lot!
Very helpful, wants you to pass

Good teacher.
Too hard, expectations not clear.
This is one of the easiest classes ever. You don't have to go to class and still you get an A.
Plays favorites.
the worsy class ever
This woman thinks that speech has to be hard
This class was the worst
What a nightmare. An awful teacher.
Very cool teacher. If you do all the work you should get a least a B.
This class sucks! Assignments are confusing. Hated it and the teacher. Take another.
this class sucks
Enjoyed the class, good teacher, I just thought the class was a little harder than was necessary.
Was very mean to me. She got angry at me about asking her something and almost made me cry. Not good at teaching the subject. I got nothing from the class except a grade.
Difficult class, but great teacher. Makes students feel comfortable.
I got an A in the class but that was I really worked hard to get it...I didn all the written assignments and practiced each of my speech probably 7 times! She's nice but if you want less stuff to do..don't take her...

This teach is pretty cool. Very clear on instructions, very helpful with assignments and very social! All the things I see in a good teacher are these qualities. Her assignments aren't hard. Only thing is you videotape yourself.
Great teacher. Makes you feel comfortable. Highly reccomend her.
she was the best teacher ever , she is very nice , very helpful and makes you feel comfortable in class . dont know what those other people were talking about .. to me she is the best ..
She was a great teacher. She was super nice and sweet. She mad the class easy going so we could get up in front of everyone and feel calm.
Lisa Brewster is an outstanding instructor. She takes the time to ensure that each student understands the materal before they give their presentation. Strongly recommend her as your instructor.
I had Lisa Brewster for speech and she was an outstanding instructor. Her classes were fun and intereting. She respected all students. Lisa gave extra credit to help with your grade. I have a hard time believing that she was rude to anyone. Maybe that person recieved a bad grade.
She's a comforting and understanding teacher. Respects all people. Just do the work, stand up straight and look around during your speech and if need help, she's always willing to assist.
She was very helpful. It wasnt easy at first (doesnt help if you have a fear of public speaking) but she made it much more comfortable. She was a very nice teacher too. If I planned to take other speech classes, I truly hope I get more teachers like her. She was a very good teacher.
Tons of work, harsh grader... The class was boring. A "C" from Lisa=an "A" from other professors. Do not recommend.
She is a very caring and understanding teacher. but her grading sucks!!!! shes their if you need help but its not easy to maintain an A in her class. just be at class everyday do all the speeches and do good on your exam, and extra credit and you should pass.
Granted her grading is difficult but overall her class is easy. She outlines what you need to do and as long as you follow directions you're fine. One of the most personable professors I've ever had. Highly recommended.
Do not be deceived by those happy faces! Lisa demands way too much and expects you to be PERFECT.Very, very difficult to get an A.Hopefully she will stop being so particular.I did not find her class usefull.Otherwise she is not a bad person and can be helpful. May be she thinks that being so strict makes students learn more. No! We just run away!
She is a very good and helpful person and i enjoyed the class very much eventhough i hate speaking. Granted her grading is a little strict but its manageable. Its relaxed most the time but there is times where work is alot. But overall not too much work.
she is a good teacher and a good speaker. she really wants you to do well but we as students have to at least be mature and do what we are required to do in COLLEGE, which is to learn and work hard.
I really enjoyed taking speech with Lisa. She's really sweet and very helpful. However, her assignments and expectations can be a bit challenging, but thats to be expected in college. She does not accept late work or speeches. She's got a great sense of humor and treats all her students with respect. I highly recommend taking her!!
Lisa is a great teacher and you learn a lot in her class. However her class can be a bit hard for some people becasue she expects a lot. However, if you participate in class, turn in all assignments on time, come to class in time, and work hard then you will be fine..she is fair/
I'm so glad I landed in her class for Public Speaking because she's very organized, she pays attention to everything, she's super detailed, and she knows exactly what she wants her students to accomplish in her class. Yes, it's true she's tough, but believe me, when you make it through her class, you feel like you can take on other challenges!
Lisa is strange, she brings her personal life to class and then she never knows what to do with good students and can't help students with problem either. she is too much about grades and numbers that she forgets the reall purpose of her class. Her grading suckes... If u are a decent public speaker or not do not take her class.
I recomend her to you all. Really good teacher. Easy A. Works really good with students. Fun and easy.
Lisa is one of THE VERY BEST teachers that I have ever had. She is Pleasant, Very likeable, and makes the class Fun & Interesting, which is how a class should be. She Can Teach, and I feel that I learned so much from her. I actually looked forward to attending each class. She is Fair & Honest, & Displays Superior Knowledge on the subject.
Lisa was the best teacher I've had out of many in the San Diego Community College district. I did not (and do not) like public speaking, but she made this class enjoyable by bringing daily and family life into class and lecture with good communication tips that we can all use. A bit strict, but SHE KNOWS HOW TO TEACH AND YOU WILL LEARN FROM HER.
very good teacher. helpful...put in fair amount of work and you will do well.
She was a horrible teacher. She is all smiley and says she wants to help, but is SO FAKE. I got a B in the class, anyway, but she isn't teaching to help students, she's teaching so she can feel powerful. Really arrogant.
Great Prof. i liked her so much, helpful and understanding. follow the rules and you will get an A. even i'm from another country but i got an "A".
GREAT CLASS!!! Teacher is helpful, speaks passionately, and gave a great outline for writing speeches. I highly recommend taking this class.
Dr. Lisa is very, very demanding. Even for an online course, she expects a lot from you and it was appalling at how strict she was. There was a lot to do and the deadlines felt like the were coming in one after the other, she had so many rules for every single assignment. Sure, she knows her stuff, but it seemed like she demanded perfection.
Dr. Lisa expects a lot out of her students, but she gives you all the tools to be able to meet those expectations. Make sure you follow along with all her lectures and you will see improvement. I learned a lot and found it very useful as well. I worked hard in her class, but it paid off.
This was a great class. Like the other students said, Dr. Lisa expects a lot of her students and she makes it very clear from the start. She was very quick to answer ?s and emails. She did track how many hours you spent logged on to the class so make sure you read all her lecture notes and watch her videos. Also lots of writing, so be prepared.
Dr. Lisa is great. Yes, she is demanding, but there is a reason for it. The person who rated her on 7/10, didn't you know you were taking a summer class, and it's more demanding? Anyways, if you follow all the directions, which are quite clear, you'll do great. It's pretty obvious that Dr. Lisa has worked many hours putting her class together.
She focuses way to much on technicalities and loses track of the purpose. Never commented on any of the content, instead she just looked for typos and grammar. The book is only there to be quizzed on. Other than that, this class is just to learn powerpoint. What a joke!
Expects way too much from students; like this is the only class you have. Gives bad grades even when you do the work and try as best you can. Powerpoints have to be Harvard status or you get nothing better than a C. Recommend new teacher.
Dr. Brewster is extremely fake! And Grades ridicoulsly hard! I did ALL the work in her class and only missed a couple days, but because it was my first class of the day at 9:30 AM I was tardy most of the time. However, let me repeat I did EVERY assignment in the class and she didn't pass me! I don't recommend taking her! She puts on a front!
I love Dr. Lisa. She has been my favorite professor so far in college and she's helped me TONS! I'm sorry if people have disliked her and said she was fake because I think that she is an amazing woman who carries herself well. She knows what she likes and wants out of life. I really respect her and am taking her 135 class next. I RECOMMEND HER!
If you want to improve your speech skill in 3 months, you definetely should take her class.
She is NOT clear with any submission dates; On the assignment it says due on Sat and on Calendar its Due on Fri When you ask her about it she's not as helpful saying that you should look at the calendar and syllabus when the syllabus when it doesn't say anything about it doesn't post quizes on time When grades are up grades aren't added correctly
This is an easy class, do homework, write journal, and speak 2 major topics. You just need to practice pronunciation.
I had wait a whole semester just for her, her class is useful, clear, flexible, and understanding. Take her! you'll enjoy her classes.
Very easy to follow
Dr. Brewsters has her style. I've come to realize this class focus on presentation and speech. I love and hate the evaluation sheet she gave me. Imagine that she was like a "mirror" which showed me all the blemishes on my face. However, after I practiced my pronunciation, she'd polish and help me improve it. I think that is this class purpose.
For a speech class she grades pretty hard. She records all speeches. Her lectures are interesting and easy to remember.
She was a hard teacher. I was so nervous to be in front of the class and make a speech. She wouldn't help. One of the worst teachers I have ever had
She grades you solely based upon your applicaton of course material. It doesn't matter how comfortable you already are in front of groups; she wants you to improve. Hint: intentionally bomb on your first speech, and she'll see your "growth" as worthy of an "A."
Very excelent teacher. She focuses on how you improve with each speech. She does a lot to make sure you have the tools you need to succeed in the class, all you need to do is the work. She makes the class enjoyable by telling stories and has you work together, but doesn't stray from her main point. Lastly, she gives very good life lessons.
I took this class at 11am and would still be a little late because of late study and a little insomnia. She bumped my grade from a low C to a D be'cuz of this. She one time had messed up my scores and had me worried when I had a D when it was a B overall in the middle of the semester. She didnt like my final speech and this got the grade lowered.
Dr. Lisa's interpersonal relations class is honestly life changing! If you give it your all and honest self you will be amazed at how much this class affects your life. I grew so much as a person and she is truly a motivational and very helpful instructor and guide. Highly recommended class!
An interpersonal communications course should strengthen your communication skills rather than overload you with useless work. None of what I learned was meaningful except for one or two assignments. She is very unclear, disorganized and unreasonable. Anyone interested in taking COM135 should not take this class!
I took this class Fall of 2013 and she was very unclear about how she wanted each assignment done. She would say we can do it how we want it but then mark points off. She didn't give much direction which was the most annoying thing in this class. We had two speeches, reading journals, personal journals, and a final. I Don't recommend taking her.
Dr. Brewster cares about each and every student taking her class, she's passionate and very knowledgable. Very clear on what improvement she wants to see in speeches, outlines, and other assignments. She grades solely on effort. So you get what you give in this class. Her class provides lifelong lessons. Strongly recommend her, she's phenomenal!
She's not that bad. The fact that she never gives enough directions was a little frustrating for me, but I saw others benefiting from that. I liked how helpful and flexible she is to others. I highly recommend completing extra credit- it will help on the final exam. I did pass that class with an A, but it was all thanks to the extra credit.
Disorganized, self-centered, unclear, and unhelpful. She is not someone who should teach or lead anyone. Avoid at all costs. The college should be disgusted.
I have taken an online class and in classroom from Dr. Brewster and both classes were awesome!I don't understand the lack of direction comments. She has a website and a full lesson plan she hands out at the beginning of class. She repeats over and over what she expects. You need to be organized and read all of the instructions and you will do well.
She is amazing! Honestly my favorite teacher i have ever had in my life. She genuinly cares about her students and connects with you on a personal level. She does assign a good amount of homework but it helps when it comes to the final exam, which she let us take in pairs. If you are a communications major she is the best possible teacher to take!
She's great. She makes you work for your grade, but does it in a nice, caring way. You will know how to be a great speaker by the end of her class. She does a lot of group work and the only hard part of her class is the preparation for the final exam. But she gives you a lot of time to prepare for it. Definatley taking one of her classes again!
Amazing teacher who explains everything in a way that all learning styles will understand. Will gladly give another example and ties everything together and then to real life. If you're terrified of public speaking she'll fix that by the end of the semester.
There are lots of bad comments about her. I don't know why. She has the entire semester's lessons and assignments accesible on the first day of class, so theoretically you could submit everything on the first day. If you get ahead you will be fine. Take good notes on the journal and contribute a well-written discussion and you will be fine.
She is a great professor and she knows it. The class has a lot of assignments, but if you do them, go to every class, and give your best effort it is an easy A. She is motivational and encouraging. Down sides- she shows no mercy if something is not done her way even though she does not clearly state what she wants for each assignment.
Outstanding teacher and wonderful woman!!! She wants to get to know you and help you as much as she can. This class really helps you understand communication and how you can learn to communicate with others. I have learned so much and am grateful that she was my teacher. I would recommend that everyone takes her class. There is so much to gain
This was not an easy class, but I definitely learned a lot and it absolutely made me a better public speaker. This class requires effort and dedication, DO NOT put things off to the last minute or you will not do well on speeches. She was a wonderful professor though, very engaging, and always gives you great feedback on how to improve.
Seriously, one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Very harsh grader. Extremely arrogant and fake (like most of the positive reviews here). Wonder why there don't seem to be any middle ground reviews . . . all are either 1 star or 5 stars. Hmmmm . . .
As long as you do the work, you will pass. There are three speeches and two written tests. She is very helpful and is willing to give additional coaching if requested.
The only thing I didn't like about Dr Brewster was her confusing directions of multiple assignments. There isn't much homework, just outlines for the 3 speeches you give as well as the relationship journals. Barely used the textbook, but then had to scan over it before taking her written final. I recommend doing the extra credit and reading.
She can be a very good teacher, very inspirational. But the work for her class was confusing, she barely explains it and she explains it a week before it's due and wants you to "figure it out yourself". Her lectures were not boring, she has the potential to be a GREAT teacher but she's not clear
Her directions are confusing yet her assignment are to be interpreted to what you have learned. You have 7 personal journals analyzing a relationship you have, 2 Speeches, Quiz on every ch. of the book and a final. She offers one extra credit which I HIGHLY recommend. If you do the work don't worry you'll pass. At the end it wasn't bad, would take
Her grading is too tough, I could easily not put a long enough reference quote from the book in my assignment and she will dock me points just for that. Her homework assignments are tedious and seem pointless to me; she does seem like she understands communication very well and enjoys teaching it but if you want an A get ready to do a lot of work.
I wouldn't take any classes with Pro. Lisa, needless to say-- NOT only I waste my time but also made my life harder. I Put so much work for this class even I drop one class specifically for this to do well!!!! yet I got "D". PLEASE take someone who can help raise your GPA !
I would recommend this professor! She is very caring for her students. You can tell that she loves her job. If you need help she will help you as best she can to be sure you really learn the material. She is very clear on what she expects out of you.
I've take Prof. Brewster a few times. She is always very helpful. While she can be a tough grader, she gives great feedback that helps you grow and improve throughout the semester. I highly recommend taking her classes. She cares about her students and she makes class interesting.
I didnt learn or improve at all in presentational speaking, taking Brewster was a huge waste of time. She's very hard to listen to in class and grades strictly based on her weird standards. She gave good feedback after, but did little in telling you what she wants beforehand. I'm still really nervous speaking in front of crowds
Since it is an on-line class, be prepared for the discussion boards - both posting and responding to them every week. There was definitely a more creative approach to assignments. Although the rubrics were very clear, if you struggle with being creative you might feel a little lost at first. But she gives excellent guidance and feedback.
Very caring professor. Made an impact on my life that I never expected from a class.
Only 2 speeches total. Some simple group activities. You should read but if you're a good skimmer than you'll be fine. Some class participation but not much. There is extra credit! If you are terrified of public speaking, this class is for you. Ms. Brewster really wants to make everyone feel comfortable and safe so don't be afraid to talk to her.
Don't take this professor if you want to improve on public speaking, I didn't learn a thing! There are a lot of assignments that are put to no good use because they don't help you improve in giving presentations.
Brewster is one of the kindest and caring professors you will ever meet. She genuinely cares about her students. That being said she does deserve the respect and you do have to pay attention in class. Read the textbook and don't get behind (As with every class) and you should do fine. I definitely became a stronger speaker after this class.
Avoid at all cost
This is my first time writing a ratemyprofessor review and I'd like to tell any future students considering taking this professor to please stay away. One of the worst classes I've ever taken at Miramar.
not ur avg speech class, prof is kind and understanding. 2 speeches, activities are easy pts. group work is fun and simple (coming from an asocial) speeches can get rly personal, safe space to share secrets. more centered on relationships (go figure!) rather than public speaking. 101 on how to improve ur life w others thru communication.
I took this class to become a better speaker and it made me worse. Looks like I will always hate speaking to crowds and this professor didn't help at all.
She is definitely a tough grader, and she had admitted her self that she is unclear and that's just her method, However, ultimately a nice professor who really knows her stuff. she is unclear many times & believes good a student will figure out what to do for the course eventually by investigating. If you want an easy A, look for other professors.
Very confusing teacher with tedious and pointless assignments. She seems very unorganized with her website. Oh and if you email her any questions it seems to be an annoyance for her. "I already said this in class.." like cmon, I just need some clarification, no need to be a b
Would not recommend this professor to anyone. Lectures irrelevant to the course, puts up an act about caring so much for the students. Responds with an attitude if she's told she is wrong about something. Her "method" of teaching is with little direction so everyone is always confused about assignments (most of them are pointless). Don't take.
I had three speeches, while only two were truly graded. 10 point assignments due at the beginning of almost every class based on textbook reading. No exams. She is happy and bubbly so we ready to speak with her and your classmates. There were 20 points of extra credit offered to boost your grade, show up, read, do the work, and you'll pass!
Even though I like her personality I would never take this class again . If she gives way too many assignments and she lables the Homework as class activities which are super confusing?( because you would think class activities means in class activity right ?) ther method of grading is really confusing! Would recommend her to anyone.
I had professor Brewster for Coms 103 (required for transfer) and it was a decent experience. I am not very comfortable with public speaking and she does a great job of creating an environment where everyone feels safe and comfortable when giving presentations. Preparation was very important, so take her advice on how to prepare for a speech!
Don't take this class if you want to be a better speaker
Professor Lisa Brewster is wonderful. This class was a requirement for my AA and I wasn't excited to take it. This class and the way Professor teaches it changed my life. The class activities are super easy and so are the class journals. As long as you put in the work and stay on top of your due dates. No exams just speeches.
This professor wants you to really take away lessons from the class; and they are great lessons! She can be a tough grader at times, but she is easy to talk to and you can just ask her why you got a low score and change yourself. There are no tests and the classroom has a great environment because you talk in groups for the "Class Work" sometimes.
Terrible.
Professor Brewster is an amazing passionate teacher. Her online COMS 180 class was well organized with homework and projects due each week however, they were fun and engaging. You get to learn and express yourself in a lot of the projects which makes it easy because there is no wrong answer. Just show effort and she will give you great feedback.
Why does she have so many reviews? Anyway don't take this professor, I wish someone talked me out of it before enrolling
I hate speaking in front of people, but Lisa made the experience do able! She is very helpful inside and outside the class. Don't be afraid to ask her anything when you're stuck. There are occasional group work and improv games which can be terrifying, but enjoyable. There are only 3 main speeches, some hw/quiz, and one test.
Marked me down for "not paying attention" even though I was pulling up my speech that we were working on?? It wasn't even 5 minutes into class when she got mad. Her lectures are pointless and so are assignments. She thinks shes right about everything and thinks shes better than everyone. No clear directions. You get nothing out of this class.
Lisa was an amazing professor, she worked well to improve each individual. Shes understanding and helpful and I believe that shes a fair grader as long as youre showing effort and putting work in. If youre scared of speaking or want to improve, take this class with her. 3 speeches, class activities thru out, and reasonable prep time for all hw
Her directions are so vague you need to litterally ask her what she wants specifically. If you dont write your essays correctly it drops your grade a lot even if you explain to her what you meant she will not allow you to redo it for a better understanding it is an oh well try harder next time. Also tends to talk about her own life a lot!
Lisa is the kind of teacher that has gained so much respect from her students and past students. She is a tough grader, but she is so passionate about what she teaches and you will be too once you step into her classroom. If you follow her syllabus, read the material, do the homework, and show up you will pass! Simple as that.
Pros: Enthusiastic, experienced Cons: (1) Inconsistent grading (2) Counterintuitive website design. Difficult to find docs and doesn't list all due dates on her calendar (3) Poor exam prep. Did not cover final exam material until day before (4) Unempathetic. Was homeless for a period and wasn't flexible with a deadline despite circumstances
Dr. Lisa is a fantastic professor who truly cares about her students. I learned so much as a result of her class! I realized that the class was not a requirement but I didn't want to drop it because I didn't want to miss out on such an amazing learning experience. She is so encouraging and inspirational. God send Angel!
Lisa is an amazing and inspirational professor who cares about her students dearly. Her classes are perspective-changing and super well put together. That said they are A LOT of work. 2 presentations, lots of in class group discussion/activities, weekly reading responses/journals, etc. Even with the amount of work, Lisa is a fair grader.
Bad ratings do not do her any justice. Easily one of the best professors in the district. She really care about her students success and progression through the semester. If you have any sort of problem relating to the class or no, she will be glad to help you out. Just communicate!
Took her class during fall of 2019. I wish I had taken another professor because she grades your work as if it were a math and biology class even though you only need it for credit. She also gave us a bad end of the semester group project that we could've done in class instead she opted for us to do it outside of class.
Really regret taking her class, do yourself a favor and pick any other class not taught by this lady
I took COMS 103 online. She emails you back quite quickly, which is nice. Theres no set time to meet for zooms or anything. BUT. Her instructions on canvas are often contradictory or just poorly worded in the requirements. She literally posted the final with no info about what was going to be on it whatsoever. Good material, bad instruction ig.
Do not take her class, she had us do a presentation on some very personal topics and took off points if you got emotional. At the end of presentations were people got emotional or stuttered she would say that they should have practiced more. I don't think practice will keep anyone from getting emotional when talking about personal traumas.
When students and I have questions on "pronto", she leaves us on read. She doesn't answer. She just looks at it. It's strange considering pronto was her idea. That, on top of the fact the she is a tough grader. Good luck getting a good grade from this professor, her expectations are unrealistic.
Dr. Brewster literally saved my grade. She makes everything easy to understand, makes her own lecture videos, and gives personal input. We had to do a LOT of reading for her online course. MAKE SURE TO DO THE QUIZZES at the end of each chapter (this is what nearly ruined me)
She definitely includes too much information in each module. The lectures videos, rubric and outline are all you really need to pass the class. Each lecture requires participation. You dont need to read the textbook. She gave a few extra credit assignments and is very clear about how she grades.
I really enjoyed her class. Her lectures and readings were very interesting, but had a lot of reading and homework assignments, but I shouldn't be complaining because it was an 8-week course. Her assignments are really fun, I recommend taking her class.
I felt that the professor was somewhat unfair in grading. For example, I received a low grade because I allegedly did not respond to one of the students, when in fact the assignment required responses to two students. I pointed out the names of both students I had responded to, but my message was ignored and I received no explanation.
worst grader oat
tough grader. said she would be easy on us, but always gave critiques. also very picky with how her assignments were. we had weekly readings + videos to do, and she also had us show up every week. while she was kind, I dreaded going to her eight week class.
This class was challenging- her grading was harsh and gave no communication as to why. After getting some help from a tutor I still received bad grades (I have never gotten below a C on an assignment before taking this class) She does not do makeups or redos on assignments, she does not give clear feedback, I do not recommend this professor.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Genuinely almost dropped out of college completely because of this class.
